Catching Fire Kisses: Empty & Full

For #ToastedTHG @everlarkedalways asked us to compare and contrast the kiss in the snow with Peeta to the kiss at the fence with Gale. Buckle up Everlurkers!

Gale’s kiss is an empty experience for her. A lot of her phrasing is void-esque:

“he took” || “i think” || “vaguely” || “he let go”

“he was gone” || “hole in the fence”

The kiss with Peeta is a full experience:

“catches me” || “into” || “full of” || “underneath” || “brings to everything” || “not alone”

Peeta’s kiss is described viscerally but Gale’s is explained dryly. During the kiss in the snow she becomes overwhelmed with emotion to the point of wanting to cry. After Gale leaves Katniss she has to think on if the kiss made her feel anything at all, and it didn’t, she felt and feels absolutely nothing.  Not even resentment, even though she was completely unprepared for it. Which knowing Katniss, and that Gale supposedly knows how she feels about love and relationships, you would think she’d at least be ticked off. But she just feels nothing. That could be chalked up to her bad mental health except that she becomes emotionally overwhelmed by Peeta’s kiss.

I think the most important distinction between these two kisses is the movement descriptor Katniss uses and how she uses it. She declares Gale’s hands entrap her even though he isn’t the one she is required to kiss. She describes the feeling of Peeta’s kiss as steady. It’s familiar, secure, stable. Peeta literally catches her and even though they slip and fall, he still cushions her from the fall. It’s very metaphoric for their entire relationship through the series. There is a lot of togetherness in her language as well, “catches”, “we” is used three times plus “our” and “underneath”. That word “underneath” speaks to the experience being layered for her.

Gale’s kiss is described as something that’s all about him and his feelings, because he feels left out and wants to stake a claim whereas the kiss with Peeta is about him showing up for her, being in the show together despite how it might hurt him on a personal level. The kiss with Peeta is one paragraph and she uses the word me seven times! No words or phrases of being together are used when relaying Gale’s kiss to the reader.

Even the imagery of the environment for each kiss fulfills what they represent. Right before Gale kisses her she says it happens at the hole in the fence. Peeta and her fall into the snow, thereby they are filling up a space within. I wonder if SC deliberately tries to confuse us here though. For this series we associate snow with, well, President Snow. Here maybe the snow is just meant to represent him, remind us that circumstances require the kiss to occur and despite that she still feels a connection when they kiss. And the fence, well the fence represents several things including freedom. Being beyond the fence is supposed to symbolize what Katniss loves but you have to look closely to see that it’s contradicted by stating the kiss occurs at the hole in the fence and the emptiness that is that entire kiss. One could even say that the kiss with Peeta fills her with thoughts and emotions.

- check out @everlarkficquestions's and @thgfanfictionlibrary's masterlists and have a blast reading fics.

- watch the film adaptations and lustily point out the discrepancies from the books.

- search everlark + edit on twitter. here's a thread of my favorites.

- search the hunger games + art on tumblr.

- make hunger games/everlark boards on pinterest.

- curate hyper-specific hunger games playlists.

- get crazy wild with headcanons (and write them down if you want).

- doodle everlark or any characters doing the most random things.

Suzanne Collins did such a good job of mentioning small things about Peeta that support the picture of him not being the first choice for anything even before the series started. Like mentioning he lost to his brother in wrestling or that his dad always wanted a girl while we know he’s the youngest child. Or being raised in an abusive household, where even if his dad is portrayed to be nice, his dad still enabled his mom hitting him and prioritized the peace of the house over keeping his children safe. And the beautiful part is that for every single instance of Peeta being in a situation where he shouldn’t be prioritized, Katniss sees reason to choose him

- in contrast to his parents Katniss chooses to prioritize Peeta’s safety throughout the books

- Katniss uses Peeta being second to his brother in wrestling as an example of how strong he is when she’s advocating for him to Haymitch.

- while Peeta’s mom thinks Katniss is the one who could be a winner (and even Haymitch ends up picking Katniss), most of the first book is Katniss thinking of all the ways Peeta could be a contender

- when the Quell is announced, Katniss picks Peeta over her own life

- during the Quell,while Peeta is trying to convince her to go back home to her best friend and the family that includes her sister she almost gave up her life for , she still chooses needing Peeta over all that

- Gale, even before everything with Prim and their disagreements during Mockinjay, Katniss’s actual affection and attraction always came back to Peeta instead of the expected route of her friend from the Seam

- the rebellion not wanting to rescue him but Katniss chooses to become the Mockingjay to bring him back

- at the end of Mockinjay, Katniss is depressed and suicidal and at the point where you would think she would choose death over everything, but the one thing that will cause her to choose to live? Peeta.

I’m in love with this! I noticed the hair touching throughout the series, but this is the first such post I’ve seen like this. I actually hate to read in some fics that she cut her hair after. I truly believe her hair is such an extension of her self, and a reminder of the care that Prim took with Katniss hair in 13. Also it’s a rebellious act to keep what the Capitol would have changed. So I think she draws comfort from the familiarity of her long hair, and lets it grow back, just as she grows back together with Peeta.

throughout the books, katniss's hair takes on multiple meanings. in one way, her hair stands as a representation of the girl that she was before the games. the girl in the woods (thg, 87; 370). the one who would hunt with her father. and later her best friend. a girl who could only rely on the fact that her family's survival rested in her hands. 

as such, she will lean into this reminder of who she is. trying to cling to the girl she used to be. finding comfort in it. especially in uncertain times. just like when she continually rebraids her hair in the games to ground herself (thg, 199; 229). to recenter herself. to calm herself in the midst of chaos. 

but her hair also stands as just another way that the capitol tries to manipulate katniss's image. her stylists are eager to change every part of katniss's body to fit the capitol's beauty standard (thg, 63). leaving her as a stranger to herself. the only thing stopping them from completely changing her hair is cinna's command (thg, 67). 

still, when the capitol wants to exert its control over katniss they are quick to control her hairstyles. like when she has to wear her hair down during the post-game interviews (thg, 355). showing an innocent girl in the place of a rebellion's icon. or when she has to wear her hair in the wedding style voted upon by capitol residents during the quell interviews (cf, 49; cf, 70).

either way, the capitol sends a message to the girl on fire. her body (and subsequently her hair) is not hers. it is property of the capitol. property of snow.

district thirteen continues this trend. especially when katniss is told that her head will not be shaved like other soldiers going into combat (mj, 214). because they need her to look more like an innocent, vulnerable girl. one that will ensure their victory. one that will make them look more sympathetic. 

all of this manipulation takes a toll on katniss. a toll that leaves her hair scorched and thin at the end of the war (mj, 300). matted and clumpy in the thick of her depression (mj, 325). representing not only who she is, but how she was manipulated under the justification of victory.

but throughout the series, people's interactions with another's hair takes on a new meaning. one that is intimate. and caring.

in some cases, it is maternal. like when katniss strokes prim's hair while asking her about her day (cf, 45). or when hazel does the same to gale while he is lying in pain following the whipping (cf, 33). or katniss's mother doing her hair for the reaping (thg, 15). 

or it takes on a comforting purpose. like when gale brushes katniss's hair out of her eyes after the quell (cf, 111). preparing to tell her that her district is destroyed. 

but for katniss, her interactions with caressing hair start and end with prim. that is, until peeta enters the picture.

because everlark's relationship is defined by them touching each other's hair. like when katniss brushes peeta's hair from his forehead when she finds him half-dead by the creek (thg, 260). or when peeta strokes katniss's hair as she peacefully goes to sleep in the cave, a gesture that katniss doesn't want him to stop (thg, 264).

and this intimate interaction with hair continues in the next book. as peeta strokes katniss's hair when she talks about her dreams on the victory tour (cf, 25). or when he buries his face into her hair as they embrace on the train heading towards the quell (cf, 55). or when he plays with her hair on the training center roof (cf, 70). 

and this continues even into the games. when katniss brushes peeta's hair from his head after he hits the forcefield (cf, 79). relieved that he is alive.

and peeta caresses katniss's hair, in the quiet hours they spend under the arena's moon (cf, 100). taking watch in the moments before the beach scene.

 and under the stress that the arena brings, they both caress the other's hair. bringing both characters a sense of intimate comfort. a reminder that the person they love is still very much alive. still very much real. still watching over them. protecting them. 

and even after it seems like everything in their relationship is gone, never to return, katniss makes moves to caress peeta's hair in the capitol sewers (mj, 257). to help him sleep. just like how he helped her sleep in the first arena. but stroking their lover's hair until sleep overcomes them.

and, in the moment, it doesn't matter that peeta is a threat to her life. it doesn't matter that he said cruel things to her in district twelve. because when peeta, her peeta, starts inching his way back to her, she is ready to extend her arms out to him. ready to caress his hair. ready to remind him of who she is to him. 

remind him that she cares for him. that she will protect him. that she (in her very katniss way) loves him.

Can we talk about this? Katniss says she’s not used to being touched, EXCEPT BY PEETA or her family! CF pg. 81. She’s USED to being touched by him. So natural for her.

Later, in MJ while mourning for Peeta, she again refuses to be touched except by Haymitch, page 163, BECAUSE HE LOVES PEETA TOO!! So much significance in this! Ughh! Please share your thoughts!

When Katniss tries to convince herself that Gale is her best friend while she doesn't enjoy his company anymore. I'm like, girl...

The most carefree she's been in Catching Fire is when Gale is bedridden with injuries and she doesn't even see him anymore. She can finally enjoy Peeta's company without worrying about Gale guilt-tripping her.

Katniss, Peeta has been your best friend since halfway through Catching Fire. Finnick was your second best friend when Peeta got kidnapped; Johanna was your second best friend when Peeta got hijacked. The person who gives you anxiety because they constantly guilt-trip you is NOT your best friend.

I really hope that Katniss one day gets her exile lifted. Idk I think it’s so sad that she unwillingly gave up so much for the rebellion and she can’t even see or experience the new free Panem.

I want her to have a real victory tour with Peeta. Maybe they could have a proper one as a honeymoon trip 🥲

AU game: Cinderella!Everlark

So I’m actually writing something like this so I’ll share parts of my WIP!

Peeta is the Prince, but is also the ‘Cinderella’ of the story.

After Katniss’s father dies, her mother remarries the baker (no relation to Peeta)

Peeta conceals his blonde hair with soot/cinders 👀 so he’s not recognizable as the prince

He wins a wrestling tournament at the harvest festival. Emboldened by his Victory, he asks Katniss to dance.

It’s not a rags to riches story, rather a rich and miserable to happy and not-rich.
