you are 16. you are talking with a gay man in his 50s or 60s, a friend, huge and gentle with a scarf and short fluffy curls of gray hair, who has directed you in two plays staged in your mid-size artsy town. (he has not yet asked you to be in his production of The Laramie Project which will change your life. this conversation will also change your life.)
he is talking about theatre. he is talking about theatre when he was younger. he says, "of course, it was AIDS then." in the pause, you ask him. clumsy and quiet and 16 and "straight," you ask him. what was it like.
he takes a moment in which his face is not like a person's face. "there was a time," he says, "i'm not sure how long, years. when i went to a funeral every weekend." he tells you about two funerals in a day, and choosing between friends when you couldn't make it to both. he does not look at you, he looks at them. his wet grey gaze is so clear that you start to see ghosts. it will be years before you understand why it feels like your grief too. why the ghosts call you family.

They should add a feature to this website where you can browse someone’s blog by inputting a short phrase and then a search algorithm would retrieve all the posts containing it

This Pride I hope that all of you never ever forget that no amount of sanitizing your sex life or sanding down of your LGBT edges will make bigots accept you. So, don’t debase yourself by capitulating an inch to them, especially in ways that throw your fellow community members under the bus.

So sick of heteronormativity and amatonormativity rn. I hate that "can men and women be friends" is even a question. I hate "there's no platonic explanation for that". I hate the way people assume I must secretly be romantically interested in my friends because "why else would a man talk to a woman?" I hate this cage that we've built for ourselves.
#i think one of the issues with the phrase ''there's no platonic explanation for that''#is that it would often be used as shorthand to communicate that something was either queercoding or queerbaiting#it would be said in lieu of ''if these characters were a man and a woman rather than two men/two women their dynamic would be read as#romantic rather than platonic''#as in the way this is written and shot and scored implies romance but that is disregarded because its two women or two men#like it's a lot easier to say ''there's no platonic explanation for that'' than to explain what i just tried to communicate#but the problem is that if you're not aware of it being shorthand or if it's not being used as shorthand#suddenly it becomes incredibly dismissive and reinforces amatonormative biases#often you'd use the phrase ''theres no platonic explanation for that'' not to describe the act itself but how it was portrayed#theres a supergirl seen where lena basically buys kara an entire florists worth of flowers where many would say ''theres no platonic#explanation for that'' and the ''that'' is not referring to the act of buying flowers for someone because you can and should buy your#friends flowers if they like flowers#rather the ''that'' is the way the scene is shot using the cinematic language one tends to use to communicate romance and the music swells#and it's all romance coded but it's not textually romance#also btw a lot of people would use the phrase this way without really knowing what they meant because like weve all seen films and weve all#seen romance in film so we all find ourselves reacting to it the way we would a romantic arc except its not.#one of those things you don't have the words to explain#''theres no platonic explanation for that'' would also mean ''ive seen platonic relationships in film and this isn't that but i dont know#why or how''#but anyway this all to say that when the phrase starts to be used for dynamics where at most this is a will they or won't they#it suddenly now communicates that romantic relationships are to be elevated above all else#what was originally used as a response to queerbaiting or the lack of any queer rep on screen#became yet another reminder that some of us are too queer or are the wrong kind of queer
