This article gets mentioned every time when people talk about min-maxing and I always wonder if the person mentioning the article has even read it.
The article always gets mentioned in the context that it's not the game's fault, but the player's fault, but nowhere in the article does the author make that point.
The article does point out that, once the player discovers an exploit, they are physically unable to stop themselves from abusing it, even if they would like to. So the above mentioned "just don't use the exploit" argument is invalid.
In fact, the whole thing is similar to how cosmetics target neurodivergent people. "Just don't buy the skins", "It's just cosmetics". Yes, and some people are very susceptible to that.
It should also be noted, that, most of the time, if there is an exploit in the game, it is, quite literally, THE GAME'S FAULT.
The whole argument about "That's not how the devs wanted you to play the game" is invalid, because the devs gave you the opportunity and incentive to play the game that way.
Last weekend, for example, I replayed Gothic 2 NotR. In that game, you can pray at Innos shrines for extra attributes. You can get a total of +10 STR and +10 DEX, but only one prayer per ingame day works.
Raising your attributes requires Learning Points (LP), where 1LP can be used to raise any attribute by 1pt, until that attribute reaches 30. Then, it's 2LP per pt, at 60 it becomes 3LP per pt and at 90 it becomes 4LP per pt. So clearly, there is incentive to wait until you cash in your free attributes, because the LP savings later on may be 2-4 times as much. Also, by raising your attributes early through prayer, that means you reach lvl 30/60/90 earlier, giving you less time to enjoy the cheap LP cost.
Also, in the middle of the game, the shrines get corrupted, disincentivising you from using them.
This means that later on in the game, you have to run back and forth between a bed and a shrine 20 times, to finally get your stat boosts. This is NOT fun at all, but EVERYTHING in the game pushes you towards doing that.
Now, you could say that this was a side effect from the NotR expansion, since the vanilla game didn't have increasing LP cost. But still, here are the possibilties:
The developer didn't realise that free stat boosts would become more valuable later on, even though that is very obvious to basically anyone: It's the dev's fault.
They realised but didn't care/failed to address it: It's the dev's fault.
They realised and said: Yes, that is exactly what we want the player to do: It's the dev's fault.
This is also why I said most of the time earlier. The thing I just mentioned is a very easily forseeable consequence of the increased LP system, and arguably isn't even an exploit(?)
There are instances where someone finds an exploit that makes you really wonder how they figured that out. And in those cases, I can't really fault the devs for not anticipating players to do those exploits. But in cases where it is so obvious, I can't fault anyone but the game devs for including those exploits in the game.
I had a lot more to say and wanted to also go further into the details about what I already said, but this took longer to write than I expected and also, no one will read it if it goes on for longer, so I'm just going to stop here, as I already made my main point.
Obviously, if you are disappointed with the missing part of my essay, that is the reader's fault.
i keep getting recommended videos about how minecraft isn't fun anymore and it's mojangs fault. i think its such a fascinating phenomenon because i think at least 70% of that comes down to anything getting a little stale when it's all you do for years and years. of course you're going to not feel like something is as fun as it used to be, you started playing minecraft when you were 11 and you are 23 now with a job. things change and you are experiencing it.
