One of the worst ways to be invested in a show is to be interested in a character who is not minor but who you’re not supposed to find interesting. Like they’re the “boring” option in the love triangle when you’re supposed to want the bad boy or they’re just there to fill out the cast roster and pilot the least interesting mech on the team etc etc and the writer obviously either doesn’t like them or just doesn’t care. So you’re like my blorbo and technically they have screen time but it’s not good screen time. And then the fandom reinforces it because they like the characters they’re meant to like…

Is there a way to report users for posting works made with/by ai?
According to this news post from May 2023, AI works are not currently against the Terms of Service (whether that changes in the future, I have no way of knowing). In most cases, those works are not something that PAC will take action against.
Instead of reporting, I recommend you mute authors who post those works. That way you won't see them in your search results or tags in the future. To mute an author, click or tap on their username to visit their profile page, then click or tap on the Mute button you can find underneath their name.
Full text of the relevant portion of the news post is copied below. Bold is in the original.
At the moment, there is nothing in our Terms of Service that prohibits fanworks that are fully or partly generated with AI tools from being posted to the AO3, if they otherwise qualify as fanworks.
Our goals as an organization include maximum inclusivity of fanworks. This means not only the best fanworks, or the most popular fanworks, but all the fanworks that we can preserve. If fans are using AI to generate fanworks, then our current position is that this is also a type of work that is within our mandate to preserve.
Depending on the circumstances, AI-generated works could violate our anti-spam policies (e.g. if a creator posts a significant number in a short time). If you're uncertain whether a work violates our Terms of Service, you may always report it to our Policy & Abuse team using the link at the bottom of any page, and they can investigate.
This statement reflects AO3’s policy at the time of writing, as we wanted to be transparent with our users about what our current stance is and what can be done – and is being done – to mitigate scraping for AI datasets. However, these policies are also under discussion internally among AO3 volunteers. If we agree on changes to these in the future, those will be announced publicly; additionally, if there are any proposed changes to the AO3 Terms of Service, they will be made available for public comment as is required of any and all changes to our Terms of Service.
We hope that this helps to make things more clear – this is a complicated situation, and we’re doing our very best to address it in a way that doesn’t compromise AO3’s principles of maximum fanwork inclusivity or legitimate uses of the site. As discussions and approaches evolve, we will keep our users updated.

THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.

There are tags you can use for “on hiatus” and “abandoned work.” I’ve used these several times.
do you think it'd be prudent of AO3 to add a few more categories of completion status as opposed to the complete/incomplete dichotomy?
maybe divvying up the incomplete status to "ongoing", "hiatus", and "abandoned"?
I think the Archive has more than 13 million fanworks on it at this point, so anything that changes how those works are presented and organized would be a massive lift. Plus, since it's the authors who choose that sort of categorization, I don't know how they'd do it without it being fully opt-in and a significant number of those 13 million works would never end up being changed.
I also think the people who code and maintain the Archive are volunteers who have a lot of features they'd love to implement if only they had the time and manpower to code and more importantly test everything they want to make live.
If one of my works is on hiatus, I put ON HIATUS in my summary. If one of my works is abandoned, I put ABANDONED in my summary. Whether I mark it complete or incomplete at that point, anyone who might find those works still knows the status.
Not to mention the fact that I've had works that I haven't updated in over a year but that I was still actively thinking about, and therefore from my perspective they actually weren't on hiatus when from a reader's perspective they might be.
It's an interesting suggestion, I'll grant you that, but it's also more complicated than it seems at first blush.
If you ever want to suggest a feature or improvement, you can contact the Support team via the Technical Support & Feedback link in the footer of every page of AO3. They'll pass those suggestions along for consideration and prioritization.

Okay, you know what? After reading this post, I jokingly said we should all just make a pact to reblog it five times a day forever. So I'm gonna do this louder for the people in the back:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS
AO3 IS RUN BY FANS (VOLUNTEERS, NO LESS)
AO3 IS PART OF THE NON-PROFIT, ORGANIZATION FOR TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS
AO3 IS NOT OWNED BY ANY COMPANIES AND DOES NOT EARN REVENUE
AO3 OPERATES ON DONATIONS FROM FANS
again:
AO3 WAS CREATED BY FANS, FOR FANS

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
