Dear neglected Tumblr account, let me first apologise for denying you any attention over the last year or so.
The fact that the cover for our first single is the profile picture stands as a testament to how long I've neglected you.
But anyhow, I am determined to pen a few more words on this thing.
And the first thing I want to discuss is Touring.
You will have probably already read the rather infallible list of rules presented by Thor Harris. Who I agree with whole-heartedly as I read down his touring commandments. However, I wanted to add some of my own opinions to the matter - and what else is the internet for but to add personal opinions to an already over-subscribed subject matter.
"1-Don’t Complain. Bitching, moaning, whining is tour cancer. If something is wrong fix it or shut the fuck up you fucking dick. goddamn." - Thor Harris
I am incredibly fortunate that everyone in the band is as polite and middle-class as I am and bickering has never been an issue. But being stuck in a van for upwards of 7 hours at a time travelling can break the most mild mannered of spirits. It's incredibly easy to wonder what the point of all of this is stuck on the Autobahn whilst impatient Audi's (they are always' Audi's) flash their lights aggressively and climb into the back of the van (P.s. Belgium, learn to drive).
But all of that malaise and contempt for European drivers melts away when you perform.
I have been thinking about this regarding most art forms. If you were to break down the amount of time you spend on everything that is involved in being an artist of some kind you would find that 98% of the time is spent doing the boring bits: travelling, practising, organising rehearsals, schmoozing with potential bookers, fixing broken equipment, getting lost looking for your hostel etc... 2% is spent doing the bit you imagined being an artist was all about. Performing, recording, and generally speaking, making music.
And for some reason unbeknownst to me we all willingly accept that and still strive after that 2% despite the odds are never in our favour.
Call me an old softy but I think it's because that 2% is so fucking awesome we don't mind. And that 2% we spent on our latest tour WAS fucking awesome.
Our tour with Hundreds was spent with nay a hiccup. They are a fantastic group of people that were generous, kind, and didn't seem to mind us mucking about with trolleys (which we tend to do a lot for some reason). We learnt a great deal about performing and being a 'bigger' band from this tour. Some of these are small things, like planning days off correctly so you don't kill yourself to things like the background music before you play.
These guys had a really clear idea about how to build an atmosphere before performing as well as during. It got me thinking that that really is a huge part of performing live. Watching people play their instruments proficiently under some coloured lights isn't as interesting as us musicians believe it to be. What actually is happening, on a good day, is the audience is getting involved in 'your world' (for want of a better word) and, if you excuse me here for sounding a bit Californian, lose themselves to the music.
How the lighting, sound, stage is before the show plays a big part of this and people want to forget themselves whilst listening to the music. Like the best movies, it's better when you suspend disbelief and just go with the flow. And there are plenty of things that could potentially halt the flow for a band.
To wrap up this rather waffly post we learnt a lot from this tour, and we were deeply honoured to go on tour with Hundreds in Germany. And as I sit here at my in-laws in drizzly Kent for Christmas I seriously can't wait for our next tour, speaking of which here are the dates:
Peace out Tumblr and have a merry non-specific-religious holiday.
