Assessment 2 + Concept statement (700 words) + bibliography
For this assessment, I have created two recipes involving parts of the human body, to mirror the way we use parts of an animal to create a wonderful dish. The key work I worked in this assessment is “ecology”, which according to the dictionary, is the relationship of an organisms to one another and to their surroundings, to my interpretation, I decided it could be the relationship between Humans and the environment, which as of now is resulting in the 6th mass extinction. My processes prior to this final work have involved animals- the idea of killing and pulling them apart resulting in their death, that is their “extinction”, the idea was and is difficult to present however, I think my final work provided a different outlook on this topic.
I really wanted to create a twisted representation, so I flipped the roles in that, in this situation, the humans are the “animals” and the animals are the “humans”. The French names for these dishes just adds authenticity to high class cooking, for example, Plaisir De L’oeil is “eye press fun” and Avoine Rose is “pink oats”, the English name for these dishes are quite simple and odd, therefore the French language is used to make it sound more luxurious in a sense. The final work isn’t the “food” that comes out of following this recipe, it’s the fact that there is a recipe involving the use of human body parts, it needs to be thought from a non- human perspective and that if the recipe calls call for human milk, it’s the same as humans using an animals milk. Rhinoceroses are being poached for their horns as there is a demand rhino horns especially in Asian countries, particularly Vietnam, the horns are used in traditional medicine and are also a status of wealth and success. Within this community there are people that believe that the horns of the rhinos can boost their sexual drive and men buy is as a crude from of Viagra, this is not backed by science but by belief as the rhino horns are made of keratin, the same protein that is in human hair and nails. Rhinos are one of the animals are going to be extinct due to the poaching activities, for example there are only 3 northern white rhinos left in captivity, and according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species, the northern white rhinos are critically endangered and are possibly extinct in the wild.
Inspirations:
This work is heavily inspired by British celebrity chef, Heston. He has created dishes that consisted of animal parts that are not regularly used by regular people for example, whale vomit, worm pizza, calf brain custard, bull testicles plums, dormice (which the SBS article says, “eating Cinderella’s tiny friends”) and leeches filled with goose blood. Heston is a chef as well as an artist. He experiments (like we do in ADAD) and serves them.
Australian artist Freya Jobbines works include assemblage, installation, collage and printmaking. Her work with plastics which are disassembled parts of a plastic doll that have been put together to create a human body figure. Her work is haunting and quirky at the same time, if you look close enough, it’s the hands that are the breasts, the arms are the nose, the legs (foot, calf and thighs) are the hair and the face of the doll are the cheeks, and from afar they look “normal”, you don’t see the limbs and face that make up the figure. Its this aspect that I took with me in this final work, I made these “dishes” and I think that if you look at it, particularly Avoine Rose, from far its looks like a nice pink liquid but if you look closer, inspect the ingredients list, it is different and quite unexpected.
American artist, Beth Cavener’s provocative goat sculpture has also influence the way I thought about my work. The sculptures are doing things that the way human do them which lead to the reversed roles idea. Cavener’s work provokes me, and I’d like my work to have this sort of feel to it.
I must admit that this work is not traditional and is quite boring and odd, it’s a 2-page document with pictures and words, it’s not physical, in the sense that I made something by hand and that is it. The thought of what animals would think and act within our society, when humans are kept in cages and haunted. It reminds me of George Orwell’s animal farm, I feel that a lot of humans don’t realise the impact of them being alive on earth- the plants and animals.

I need to explain myself. the work that i have been producing, the experiments all relate to my theme of the 6th mass extinction. I realise a lot of the works i do focused on a lion and plants. at this point i feel i am very comfortable with drawing/sculpting/making the head of the lion and its getting a bit monotonous so i need to find something new. I feel i have this weird draw to lions- they are majestic animals, large loud, and proud, perhaps that is why i choose the lion as my main subject
i do want to try to create an animation but i don’t know how long it will take also i haven’t done any animation ever, but i think it’ll interesting. something interactive like a game?? sounds quite cool developing a game.
for my final work, im thinking a collection of everything i’ve done, maybe in a collage form, maybe in video, sound, photoshop.

clay representation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay...its a little wild and the nose is flat because it fell on its nose while it dried. this is a hybrid animal...a representation. a lion mane, human shoulders, mouth of a pacu fish x leatherback sea turtle, eyes of a leaf tail gecko x green tree frog.

Squeezing the blood out of life... Jks just fake blood ..
Tumblr media
Then spilling it on my paper.... It's so cool...I don't know what it's called but the liquid is not thin... It stays where it spilled... Unless you move it....
Tumblr media
Final product. Pretty basic but I imagine if it was real blood (an animal most likely... Or maybe human) it'll be a bit more disturbing and provoking

plant ashes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the ashes thing didn’t really work out that well because the leaf and the petals was too wet so they wouldn’t catch on fire. The ashes used are paper that i used to try to start a fire that turned into ashes

experiment
I want to work with nature so i picked up some way leaves and some petals from plants around my house:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
with these, i wanted to try to:
-draw on them,
- sew them
- burn them and use the ashes to draw
first, Drawing on them
Tumblr media
I tried drawing on the petal with a gel pen which teared the petal as seen in the image above, then i tried a marker pen which was blunter than the pen and though it still teared a little, when i start drawing on the thicker parts of the petal, it was alright
Tumblr media
using the marker on the leaves produces a clear image
Tumblr media
which was good for about 10 minutes before the ink started to look like “webs”. on the plus side, they were really easy to wipe off- almost like a whiteboard.

experiment week 5 Video
- nature+ the way we treat it- we look at it from afar then we want to take it with us so we tear it away from its natural habitat. when it has done it's job, we throw it away into the fury of fire, in which will never end as long as we keep consuming

Poster Assessment 1: 300 Word statement
prior to the final poster, I did quite a few experimentation with texture of paper. I had one with sand, fibre and mineral (like small grainy granite). I also had to change the pattern for the screen printing, which included degreasing the photo emulsion and doing the whole process again which i can assure takes quite a while. In the end I chose plain white paper. Boring... i know but the ink was soaked into the paper better and the colour came out much more vibrant.
So for this Assessment, i was really inspired by Pop art and not the “campbell soup kind”. Just really the use of bright colours and layering and simple lines- enough to make an image that is recognisable.

Screen printing pattern:
Tumblr media
OK. NOW HERE IS MY 300 WORD STATEMENT:
For this poster, I have chosen to focus on the question: 1. Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the ‘human’ and the environment?
For a long, long, long time, human have co- existed with the nature, but it wasn’t until recently where we find ourselves at the brink of losing some of the most beautiful creature and not because of any natural causes but because of us. For this question, I decided to research about the 6th mass extinction, which is an ongoing occurrence today, in which large animals like the lions and rhinoceros are at risk of extinction and the main cause is us. We keep pushing the limit, taking more than we need or can, not caring about the way nature works. In my poster, I have decided to use a regular A2 poster, silkscreened with fabric ink. This is inspired by Pop Art because Pop Art is, and I feel breaking the boundaries of traditional poster, it really catches your attention though bright colours used, simple line work, and because of this “limited” style, it really needs to “hit” the viewer. It needs to be really direct, whether with or without words. I have used the colours rose and teal (the colour seemed really dull in the packaging but it turned out brighter than expected) only because I believe that its quite a popular colour choice among society today (rose gold, rose pink, teal hair etc.). The simple line work of a lion just represents the simplicity of nature (compared to us anyway) and the lines that is layered on the top is just the amount of damage we have caused to nature, deforestation, killing for meat, poachers. The bright colour also adds to the materialist society that we are today (we care about the latest trends, fashion, hacks etc.).
This Poster is titled “Can You Still See Me?” ( obviously this is more to people in 50 years, or now if we are talking about the white rhinoceros then this really is quite sad ( there’s only 3 of them left!!!), but really depends on which animal we are talking about)

I decided to pick the topic: Ecologies

I think I want to concentrate on 6th mass extinction or Holocene extinction. Seems like a pretty cool and interesting subject  ٩(θ‿θ)۶
Anyways, here are some interesting poster methods I thought of  ( ິ•ᆺ⃘• )ິฅ✧
