She’s not even pretending to listen anymore. Her mind was elsewhere, as it so often was nowadays. Even as her father tried to interrupt her thoughts with the incessant questions - asking how she was and if she wanted to talk, none of the voices seemed to crack her.

unelectedofficial:
Catching a glimpse of green skin tore Nessarose back to her past. Back to the days of which she tried her hardest to forget about. Or perhaps it would be more appropriate to refer to that time as years rather than days? Either way, she tried to push it to the back of her memory.
But seeing green again couldn’t possibly be a coincidence, could it? Now in her older age, she doubted her vision at most times but, it couldn’t possibly be that bad? If this, er, person truly was just normal-colored, Nessarose would see a doctor to diagnose her developing color-blindness.
“Excuse me” She called towards the person in passing. “This may seem odd to you but, are you truly green or do my eyes deceit me?”

The lie was the first thing to come to her lips. You must be going crazy - I’m completely normal colored. And things more snarky and sassy. But finally, the frizzy haired girl stared down at her hands - green as could be - and decided it would easier for now to just say “yes”. More questions, but then she wouldn’t have to try and work the lies as artfully as they needed - especially for something so obvious.
“ Green as the grass and twice as wild, “ She answered, letting her tongue rest on her bottom lip for a second. The last time someone had started a conversation this way - only a few hours earlier - it had nearly caused a panic. She returns. They said. As they tended to. She lives. Even though those words were now attributed to someone else. A pang in Rain’s heart.
“ Listen, I’m leaving now and I won’t cause any trouble, “ For now, “ Believe it or not, even us freaks still need food. But I have it and I’ll be on my way. “

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, morning star, son of the dawn! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also enthroned on the mount of the congregation, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit. —Isaiah 14:12-15 War in heaven. Gustave Doré.
