Brian Dumoulin may be one of the most interesting men to wear black and gold in quite some time, as he's got so many passions outside of hockey, like travel, food and wine. The 31-year-old shared some of his must-haves, both on and off the ice, at home and on the road.
Wine books, magazines and podcasts
One magazine I've subscribed to that I really like is called Noble Rot. It's from London, where they have two different wine bars and a wine store. I really like the stuff that they write. It's really, really cool.
For podcasts, there hasn't been as many recently. But through the course of like 2010 to 2021, there was a podcast called 'I'll Drink to That!' It's a guy named Levi Dalton. He basically interviews everyone, from people who work in restaurants, winemakers, wholesale distributors - anyone in the wine trade. They talk about how they got into wine. With the winemaking, it can be very technical, where they talk about decisions with the barrels, decisions with when to pick, how their vineyards are different than the other… so it's very intricate. I wouldn't say it's for a beginner (laughs), but it's really good information.
For books, the last one I read is called 'Terrior Footprints' by Pedro Parra. He's sort of an expert. It's a book about wine and how when you blind taste, you kind of taste soil in the glass, and that's a good way to blind taste because you can really pick up different notes if you know where it's grown in.
Grassl universal glasses
I use those normally. I also use Zalto universal glasses for whites, Zalto burgundy glasses for pinots and lighter reds, and Zalto bordeaux glasses for heavier reds
Loose leaf imported tea
I do a lot of green. Lingering Clouds is a green tea that I really like. Then there's Gaba, which is good for after meals, for digestion. That still has a little caffeine, so I don't try to do that towards nighttime. I always have loose leaf chamomile before bed. I'll usually do that around 7-7:30 PM, or I'm going to the bathroom all night (laughs).
Snacks with a bit of a kick
I mean, it's not healthy or anything, but I like salt and vinegar chips. Those get me, my wife too (laughs). We'll have a bag and all of sudden, it's gone. It's easy to finish a whole bag. I also like Smart Sweets sour gummy bears [the green package]. We have them on the team plane.
The stovetop
My favorite kitchen utensil is honestly the stovetop. I like cooking on the stove a lot better, I'd say, just because grilling is a little bit harder to control. I'll do steak on the stovetop, but obviously I'll cook burgers on the grill, and stuff like that. But I like just trying a bunch of different things on the stovetop.
Broom and dustpan
I love to clean and sweep, it's soothing. I like the broom and dustpan. I'm old fashioned. That's all I need.
Beanie
That's just because I don't want to comb my hair. It's just laziness. That's one thing that I'm not into, is clothes. I'm not a clothes guy.
Lacrosse ball
I like to roll out on that for recovery. I really like that, it's easy. It's really good for your legs and your hips, to get into the small little muscles.

Lavender Haze
Midnights, Taylor Swift - “All they keep asking me / Is if I’m gonna be your bride / The only kind of girl they see / Is a one night or a wife” — Lavender Haze
(this ones my favorite)
Masterlist
Returning from deployment, Javy decided, was always a little surreal. It was like stepping out of one world and into another. Even if he wasn’t truly returning to civilian life, this felt just as jarring. This time wasn’t so bad though, he mused. They had only been away for a few nights, making this particular deployment feel more like a vacation into the other world instead of an extended stay, disregarding the near-death experiences the squad had survived, of course. That made it easier to just return to the Hard Deck and go about his business than it had been after previous deployments, or at least, that's what Javy told himself as he tried to settle his still-shaking hands enough to take his shot at sinking the eight ball.
“Who is she?”
The question from Pheonix came as he finally moved, causing him to jump and miss just left, much to his annoyance. “Who is who, pretty bird?” He didn’t hold back his annoyed sigh in the question despite the fond nickname he had given her so many years ago.
Nat rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest but no amount of feigned irritation could prevent the light dusting of blush across her cheeks that caused Javy to smirk a little. For all her stubbornness and bravado, at the end of the day, Natasha Trace was just a woman and like many other women, she had a tendency to be flustered by compliments given by men she found attractive. In Javy’s opinion, it was a fun game that they had played over the years, seeing who would fluster at the flirting first, and he lived for the glances and pouts he was rewarded with when he won, but after surviving the last few weeks he had decided it was time to end it. Not at that exact moment, however. No, he could wait until the end of the night to sweep her away after they’ve both relaxed some more and he’s had the chance to win their game a few more times.
“Who is the girl that was waiting for Jake?” Nat pressed on as she faked indifference and leaned against the wall. Javy Coyote Machado had been an annoyingly attractive thorn in her side that she just couldn’t seem to get rid of since they had met almost a dozen deployments back. As cocky and annoying as he may be, she had always appreciated the way Javy balanced flirting with her and respecting her as a pilot. It certainly did not help matters that he always seemed to know exactly which buttons to push to get a reaction out of her.
It dawned on Javy just who Nat was referring to as Brad sunk the ball he had missed, winning their game. With a nod of good sportsmanship, he handed his pool cue off to Bob and turned to give Nat his undivided attention.
“I think all those high-altitude flights are finally getting to you pretty bird, you were introduced to Cara this afternoon,” Javy smirked, leaning against the wall next to her just a little too close to be considered just friendly. He copied her stance, crossing his own arms across his chest, and couldn’t help the slight puff of his chest as he caught her glance flicker along his biceps.
Nat couldn’t help herself, and really who was to blame her? It had been a stressful few weeks and she had been wanting him for years, so what if she finally slept with him before they went on an actual date? If it was something he was interested in then she could make him take her to breakfast in the morning. For now, she wanted her information, and if Javy came with it on the side then she certainly wasn’t going to complain. So Nat leaned into him till their still crossed arms would brush if they both inhaled at the same time and peered up at him as innocently as a deadly fighter pilot could, “But who is she to Jake?”
Javy’s smirk grew just marginally as he watched her move closer. It seemed his little bird had decided to end their game herself, not that he was going to complain. “Why? Jealous?” he teased as his arms unfolded slowly, careful to give Nat enough time to lean away if she wanted to back out before letting his hands rest on her hips. His eyebrow quirked up in question as Nat’s breathing stuttered for just a moment of hesitation before she let her own hands fall from her chest to his.
“No, just curious,” she denied, though, to be honest, Nat wasn’t sure she really cared anymore. All she could focus on was the ridiculously hard chest under her hands and the warmth that radiated from where Javy’s thumbs were rubbing soothing circles against the bones of her hips. The blush that had never really left Nat’s cheeks only darkened as she watched his eyes flicker down to her lips but she didn’t stop herself from leaning in further. “If you don’t tell me I’m sure I will find out later.”
The responding nod Javy gave resulted in his nose brushing gently against hers as he gave a hummed, “later is good,” and let his hand come up to cup her cheek to pull her lips to his.
****************************************************************************
Jake couldn’t help the grin on his face at Cara’s laughter as he spun her around the dance floor. This deployment had been a close one, everyone knew it, and it had been a relief for Jake to fly back to the carrier in one piece knowing he would be the only sailor showing up on her doorstep any time soon. Living in the moment, he had long since decided, was the best way he could make use of his time with her, that and filling her days with joy. So he ignored everyone else, ignored their curious stares and whispers about his reputation, in favor of spending time with her.
To her credit, Cara was not unaware of these stares or whispers, she just didn’t care about them. She knew about the rumors that would spread about Jake, but her faith in him never faltered. Jake couldn’t possibly treat her the way he did if they were true, she would insist if ever asked about them, but that was an argument far from her mind as her giggles were interrupted by her own gasp. “Jake, oh my goodness look!”
He couldn’t help but smirk as he had to take her hand in his to stop her from patting his chest in her excitement. The way Cara would always try to include him in her joy and excitement was one of his favorite things about her, especially when it included the mild flailing that Jake found so adorable. “What am I looking at, sugar?” Jake prompted as he attempted to follow her line of sight.
“In the corner by the pool tables! Isn’t that Javy kissing that girl he likes? You know, the really cool one that flies with you!,” was Cara’s response as she stood on her tiptoes to try and get a better view. Jake’s arm held firm around her waist to help her stay balanced as he finally caught sight of the pair in the corner.
“So the bastard finally did it,” he chuckled, confirming it was Javy and Nat, “I didn’t think he had it in him.”
Cara gasped at him and swatted him on the chest, “Jake! He’s your best friend, be nice!” she reprimanded as she came down from her toes but he only chuckled again and pulled her closer.
“Oh come on, he’s been chasing after her forever, you know I’m right!” And he was right, but Cara only rolled her eyes at his statement. Javy had been a good friend to both of them for a long time and she knew that Jake was just teasing him. They had watched him fall head over heels for his fellow pilot years ago and, despite their insistence, he had yet to truly do anything about it.
“Well it still would have been nicer not to say it,” Cara insisted but she couldn’t help herself from smiling at his antics, “She seems nice though, I was talking with her and Penny while you were playing darts with Javy earlier. It’s funny, all they kept asking me is if I’m gonna be your bride!” she giggled.
Jake let a full-blown laugh out at that as he played along, “Well you know sailors, the only kind of girl they see is a one night or a wife.” Cara couldn’t help but join in his laughter as she wrapped her arms around his neck, letting the rings on her left hand get tangled in the chain that held his dog tags, a set identical to the ones she wore.
“Well, I guess it's a good thing that I am a wife kind of girl.”
