hi! i had a question pop into my brain regarding imperial uniforms. i know you know a lot about rank plaques and code cylinders and all that, so i thought if anyone has an answer to this, you might!

the little hats imperials wear, these:

do you know if those have anything to do with rank? like do only certain officers get them? i feel like almost everyone in rebels except for main characters wear them (i know that likely has more to do with ease of animation than anything else).

anyway i guess mostly i’m just trying to figure out why eli never got a little hat because i feel like he held a couple of ranks where he would probably qualify for one!

aaaaa ngl i’m DELIGHTED by this question (THAT’s what i want my brand to be 🙊) but i’m not sure how well i can answer it.

since most of the imperial main characters in rebels are higher ranking ones (thrawn, pryce) and/or ISB (kallus) the likely conclusion is that the hats/caps/kepi are part of the uniform for non-command personnel of the navy, military and intelligence branches of the empire.

i guess it could depend on the person who’s in charge how strict the uniform guidelines are enforced?

in tarkin (2014), for example, there’s this passage:

“TARKIN WAITED UNTIL the Carrion Spike was in hyperspace to announce an impromptu inspection of the officers and enlisted ratings who were accompanying him to Coruscant. […] The officers wore brimmed caps studded with identity disks, and displayed code cylinders in their appropriate pockets.”

tarkin is obviously someone who values a prim and proper appearance of his officers whereas we never see something of the sort from thrawn (even though in rebels he’s obsessed with picking specks of dust off things sksksk). which might be related to the fact that luceno describes everything in his writing while zahn describes … pretty much nothing lmao.

but you were asking about eli! honestly, your guess is as good as mine. maybe thrawn was like “whatever, you’re here to be productive not to win an award for best dressed officer” and let his crew do what they want. and maybe eli didn’t want anything to touch his absolute mess of carefully styled hair or something. maybe aides of commanding officers are excempt from the rule of wearing a hat (i doubt it tbh but everything’s possible).

those reasonings do make sense looking at the thrawn comic (though i don’t trust the comic creators’ research on uniforms and ranks at ALL, smh) because at batonn, karyn and eli both hold the rank of commander and karyn’s wearing a hat while eli’s wearing none:

in the comic it might have been a general decision not to give him a hat to emphasize that he’s a main character and not because of a plausible in-universe explanation. who knows? thrawn, too, held at least one rank we’ve seen other characters wear a hat for (see lieutenant lyste in rebels).

in the bad batch, vice admiral rampart (high rank, command position) isn’t wearing a cap but captain bragg (who’s a commanding officer of some kind) and the naval clone officers on rampart’s cruiser are:

i just noticed that it looks like the clones are still wearing the uniform of the republic navy? probably an animation error but OOF.

same thing in the mandalorian, by the way! the hats seem to be worn by commanding and non-commanding officers alike. here again a captain (left) and gideon’s comms officer who is probably a lieutenant or lieutenant commander (right):

in conclusion: it’s probably a combination of rank (very high rank = less likely to wear a hat, apparently) and how strict the officer in charge is in regard to uniform regulations.
