We'd all be happier
Tumblr media
If people stayed in their own lane. Imagine acting like a victim while hopping on a hate train for a correctly tagged post and getting all hot and bothered about something that was never mentioned in the OP.
I know I spend too much time online and I am working on reducing my time on tumblr. But gosh these people need help. The only people doing the shaming around here are the Zutara antis! Is it a crime to post Zutara content in the Zutara tag now?? I guess people can't find enough joy in their own shipping tags so they need to feel better by invading the zutara fandom.

Can we like.. normalize skipping contents that we hate or contents that don't align with our opinion? I've seen the most beautiful ship arts in almost every social media platform and there would always be like
"Love the art! Hate the ship!"
Look, I know social media peeps do their best to stay positive but is it really that important to accompany your compliment with a COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY statement? Can people normalize keeping their opinions to themselves when it's not needed? Girl that is obviously a ship post. Why do you feel the need to say you hate it after complimenting?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the compliment but I'd rather have you not comment on my post at all if you're just gonna leave backhanded compliments. Is it really that hard to JUST say "I love the art!" and be respectful? And if you hate the ship so much then do yourself a favour by scrolling up or down to avoid the content. Trust me, avoiding negativity would be better for your mental health.
It's not just happening in ship arts. Fanarts in general. There'd be like, a fanart of a character or a redesign and there will be comments like "I prefer them with this-that though." or "This-that suits them better!" or "I don't like them with this-that!".
Or there would be contents that talks about how this character is the best character of this show/game/movie or how this character has the best game effects and there would be like, "I prefer this-that character though." or "I don't see anything about *charactername though." or "Nope, *charactername is the best."
An example of this is when I was scrolling through contents about Furina's c6 plunge attack and infusions and how they are the best and there are a bunch of comments saying "I don't see Raiden though" or "Raiden's plunge is the best"
And I was like NO ONE ASKED??? Look, no hate to Raiden Shogun because she's literally one of my favorite characters. I love her plunge attack and I have an undeniable bias when it comes to purple and pink but the video was OBVIOUSLY NOT ABOUT HER. The video was not a misinformation and simply someone's opinion/preference.
It's like going to a room full of people talking about how they like the color red and saying something like "I prefer blue though!" Gosh why would you do that? It's just so EMBARRASSING and SO ATTENTION SEEKING at it's finest. And then when people call them out, they'd pull the "opinion" card and act like s victim. If you want people to respect your opinion, why don't you do it first?
People need to learn that not everything that appears on their feed is about them and to not take everything PERSONALLY because not everything is about you and not everything revolves around you. People can have different opinions and enjoy any content that they want even if those are opposed to your preferences. Being different from you doesn't make them less valid in any way.
If it's not illegal or harmful just keep your mouth shut, is it really that hard?
Instead of wasting your time commenting on a content that you don't like (and by doing so, the said content would just appear on your feed more frequently), why not search for contents you enjoy to satisfy yourself, yah?
Why? Because that's the normal thing to do. People have become so brave on whatever they say on the internet because they know they'd never suffer real life consequences.

i feel like a lot of Discourse (read: fandom wank) happens in places that have forgotten or never learned the death of the author theory
(which i know is not sacrosanct but it is very useful for handling fandom spaces, particularly fraught ones)
for those who don't know, the death of the author theory goes like this: as far as the work is concerned, the author dropped dead the second that the final word was published, and thus cannot comment, object to, clarify, or expand on anything that is not on the page.
my understanding is that it's most strictly used to mean that that the author's interpretation of the work doesn't matter, but can be expanded to state that nothing which is not on the page matters. imo, the expanded definition is particularly useful for fandoms and needs to be adopted on a larger scale.
because what it means is this:
it doesn't matter what the creator(s) intended. it doesn't matter what they said in an interview. it doesn't matter what the actors think, it doesn't matter what supplemental materials say or imply, even if they're signed off on by the creator(s). it doesn't matter if everyone involved in making it hates your interpretation and says that it's wrong.
they don't get to say that it's wrong. they dropped dead the second the last episode/book ended. their interpretation is simply one more in a vast sea of others.
listen to me, fandom spaces. i am taking your face in both of my hands. embrace the death of the author. you will no longer be bound to the (possibly fickle) words of the creator(s), your interpretation can no longer be the wrong one. if the text can be used to support it in any way, even twisty ways, it's valid. you don't have to jump through hoops to defend it against haters who say you're wrong.
the death of the author. open your heart to it. live it. be free.

Aang/Kataang stan: The ONLY reason every Zutara/Zukka shipper ships it is because Zuko is hot.
Really? That's like me saying every Kataang shipper is an Aang self insert that wanted in Katara's pants or that every Kataang shipper ships it because Aang is their only hope of getting with that 'friend' they fuck zoned.
Zutara/Zukka - and pretty much every alt or canon ship - is liked for a myriad of reasons. Yet we keep seeing Zutara/Zukka shippers being painted with broad strokes such as these.
Why?
Because generalizing the entirety of Zutara/Zukka shippers and distilling their reason for liking a ship down to the shallowest reasons possible - like only liking it because they think a character is hot - is a half assed way to justify hating/harassing them.
Kataang and Aang stans are famous for telling alt shippers why they ship their non canon ship and they always seem to pick reasons they can use to shame and blame a shipper on a personal level (gotta say, colonizer fetish has been the most hilarious thing I've heard so far)
By assigning these 'baser' and 'shallow' reasons like lusting after a cartoon character as 'the only reason they ship it' they artificially award themselves the intellectual and moral highground. In doing this they give themselves the ok to spew some incredibly offensive things that are often misogynistic and at times even racist.
Like this new trend of lumping Zutara shippers in with genocide apologists - a disgustingly repulsive new low, even for Kataang shippers.

honestly it is sort of charming to me that the ATLA fandom has been hung up on the same imaginary teenage love triangle for fifteen years...personally I feel like it is NOT my business if Katara and Aang want to get married too young and have like a million children. godspeed to them, or whatever. but Sokka and Suki should definitely absorb Zuko into whatever they've got going on, mostly because I think it would be hysterical for two non-benders who can pass for straight if they do not open their mouths to have a regular third who is the hereditary monarch of the fire magicians. can you imagine. there's just a king in your house sometimes, rummaging half-naked through your fridge for snacks and complaining about how people keep trying to have him assassinated, and you can't tell anyone about it. hilarious dynamic.

||Avatar the last airbender tarot | The Lovers | The Painted Lady and The Blue Spirit||
[click for better quality!]
[Other cards of the ATLA tarot can be found here and on my Instagram art account]
[DO NOT REPOST OR REUSE WITHOUT LEGAL AND EXPLICIT AUTHORIZATION]
Okay hear me out: I know there’s a raging war within the fandom but I’m on the Zutara side on this one blblblbl (that being said I’m not hating on any other ships and respect the canon one ; the beauty of fandoms is that we can multiship too).
Anyway, it would have been legit to put Oma and Shu on the Lovers card – which I considered briefly. But then I remembered that I was doing this tarot for myself in the first place, and that it was time to indulge my raging simping krkrkr.
I wanted to give a composition similar to the yin-yang idea. And give them a very soft, emotional vibe, with fingers interlacing and such. Not gonna lie, I’m definitely not the best drawing ship, but I’m rather satisfied with this fanart!

"Why do people dislike Zuko/Zutara stans??"
Mmmh
Tumblr media
🤦‍♂️
Sorry but I can't stay silent anymore, these posts are insane
Aang: a kid/genocide survivor lashing out because his best friend and only living link to his people has been stolen. The avatar state (a power he is afraid of) was a response to losing another part of his home, the only person connecting him to his past and eradicated culture
Katara: saw Aang loosing control in the avatar state and CHOSE to be at his side and help him, because she KNOW what's it's like having your loved ones stolen from you, she is hurt from seeing him hurting because she's an empathetic person and she loves him. She's comforting a friend during an emotional crisis.
Zutara/Zuko's stans: Ugh violent destructive tantrums save yourself katara! Zuko <3
Mh ok.
It's funny because those people are stanning a character who called Katara a peasant and threatened to wipe her village and only were in good terms in the last few episodes. They are stanning a character who was a villain/antagonist for two seasons (and half of season 3) who tried to kill her and her friends over and over again. But that's ok, he suffered and redeemed himself in the last 3 episodes, so it doesn't matter, while everything the abuser/toxic Aang """did""" was beyond forgiveness.
That's the message of Avatar the Last Airbender :)
The way people in this fandom are so unempathetic towards a 12 year old who lost everything is so crazy to me.
These episodes are full of sad moments with a lot of hurt behind it. These are all children (child soldiers also) overwhelmed by moments of severe loss. These children are human and they have flaws.
This is why being a fan of most animated content sucks as their fanbases have the intellectual capacity of a goldfish
