Okay, I'll go with you. WOH episode 34. WKX is completely drunk after celebrating his victory over ZJ. However, he still remembers that ZZS may be angry with him for what he did. So he comes to the ZZS room to explain everything to him. However, his translation ends with WKX traveling to himself. At the beginning, WKX brags about getting everyone drunk, WKX finally admits that he is happy. He admitted that the last time he had dinner with YBY, he was very sad because he was worried that ZZS would die soon, he was worried that she wouldn't accept him, that he wasn't cut out to be his little brother. But now he has left all his worries behind. He suggests ZZS to drink together. ZZS is silent all the time, he does not have the courage to admit what he has done. So he leads the happy WKX to bed. Before he does, however, WKX admits to him that he originally wanted to destroy the world, and himself with it, but the emergence of ZZS changed his decisions, making him realize that being an honorable man can be fun. He had lived so many years, but he had never been so happy. Eventually, he realized that his parents and his master wanted this for him. A carefree, happy life. When ZZS puts WKX to bed WKX says that after choosing GX he wants to find the house in the village where he lived with his parents, he wishes they had the humblest grave. He considers himself a degenerate son because he never went back there. He explains that he did not have the courage and asks ZZS to take him there. The ZZS agrees. This scene is one of the most touching scenes in the series. WKX opens his heart to ZZS and tells him what he's been worried about lately. ZZS discovers that WKX wants to protect him, he wants ZZS to be healthy, curing ZZS for WKX is as important as his revenge. WKX did not want to engage ZZS in the fight against ZJ, so he secretly developed a ZZS plan with his colleagues. He had no idea that this plan would lead to tragedy. ZZS was initially angry with WKX, but later realized that he should trust WKX and not take any rash action. It was too late now. ZZS turned out to be a coward again - he didn't have the courage to tell WKX to his face that he took the nails out of his body and was dying. All he had left was silence and tears. A beautiful scene perfectly played by ZZH and GJ. ZZH hardly had to say anything, but looking at his face we can sense what he's going through. We know his every thought, every feeling. GJ talking to ZZS throws out all the pain and uncertainty. We see different emotions on his face. The culmination of the scene is music, a song sung by ZZH and GJ emphasizes the intimacy of this scene. This scene belongs to both of them.

Before the Ever After is a poignant and personal verse novel, told from the point of view of a young man whose father is a former professional football player. Set at the turn of the millennium, when many football players were experiencing memory loss, aggression, migraines, confusion, and other symptoms without a clearly defined cause, Ever After follows Zachariah Junior (nicknamed ZJ) as he watches his father slowly lose himself to a disease that no one wants to suggest might be linked to his former career.

Middle Grade – Grades 5-9

Justification:

In order to fulfil the CSK Author Award category of my project, I sought out a list of winners through the past several years; Ever After was the winner in 2021 and caught my attention because of the subject matter. Loss of a parent to mental illness, specifically dementia and other diseases which affect memory, is a very personal topic to me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ever After was a verse novel—after I’d already borrowed it from my library—but I chose to evaluate it for the CSK category.

Evaluation:

Every character is unique, given details to make them stand out from one another in both broad ways and subtler details. One of ZJ’s friends, Ollie, is an orphan found abandoned outside of a church; Darry loves to dance; Daniel is a risk-taker. Characters are also defined with smaller details, like ZJ’s mother, who “only eats candy bars/when she’s worrying,” because “Chocolate[…]helps her think.” (p. 88) The theme of music is woven throughout the novel as ZJ writes songs, for and about his father, and into the format of the novel itself—many of the poems are songs that ZJ writes. The pacing of Ever After is both fast and slow—looming, impending, a disaster in slow-motion. The narrative begins in 1999 and continues through the spring of 2001; two years of Zachariah’s slow unraveling, happening too quickly to stop and dragging on agonizingly slow. It reflects very accurately the feeling of watching a parent’s decline. The mood is sorrowful, hopeful, nostalgic; ZJ always hopes that there’s a way for his father to get better, and is always remembering better days. My mother passed away in April of 2020, following years of mental decline; she suffered from Lewy body dementia, which was only diagnosed after I went to college, but she first started exhibiting symptoms when I was eleven or twelve. Multiple times during this book, I had to stop reading, because it brought too much back—ZJ’s dad not remembering his name, ZJ’s confusion and feeling of being lost, the quiet fearful helplessness of not knowing what’s wrong. Ever After is a beautiful book, and I recommend it wholeheartedly, but I don’t think I can ever read it again.

Blak Ryno Gives Us A Visual For "Star Up In The Sky"

A couple weeks ago, Social Media hopped on a new trend called, #RockNRyno. The trend involved Dancehall Artist Blak Ryno’s music undergoing a series of Rock-themed remixes. The Yueyang Sect is closely guarded. There are constant patrols around. There are also many martial arts masters in the city. I never thought Ghost Valley would cause such a stir. WOH, episode 8. In front of one of the buildings, a man praises the performance of the Western Province Band, saying that it is a rare opportunity. WKX, walking with ZZS, hears this announcement and asks if ZZS has seen magic tricks from the West. ZZS looks up. WKX says why they are beheading a beautiful lady with daggers. The man continues to praise the magic show, giving us live admission for a handful of coppers. Those interested approach the entrance, the man claims that everyone will be impressed. WKX suggests ZZS watch the show because he has never seen anything like it. Without a word, ZZS looks closely at WKX, who tells them to come in because FBZ may be inside. Without waiting for an answer, WKX pulls ZZS inside. There is a show going on inside, dancers are dancing to the rhythm of the music, and WKX and ZZS are sitting at one of the tables. ZZS is still silent, looks at the laughing WKX and smiles too. Music sounds around and women dance. WKX says this exotic performance is unique. ZZS does not respond. However, he is looking at the person playing the zither. WKX is paying attention. WKX responds that they should wait to see what he presents. A wardrobe is placed on the stage, two men open it and turn it around, showing the audience the empty interior. WKX and ZZS watch in silence. One of the dancers enters this closet. Both men close the wing and rotate it around its axis again. They then insert the swords into the holes that go through the wardrobe. The gathered crowd claps and shouts loudly, the men turn the wardrobe over again and after a moment draw their swords. ZZS sits and watches without saying a word, but he has a feeling that something might happen. After a while, sashes with inscriptions fall from the floor and demonic laughter can be heard. A terrifying voice congratulates the upcoming Heroes' Conference of the Five Lakes Alliance, the men open a wardrobe and severed human heads fall out. A voice loudly announces that these are ten human heads as a sign of Ghost Valley's goodwill. Terrified spectators ran out of the building. ZZS notices that the zither player has disappeared. A group of students from the Yueyang Sect run in, their leader orders the arrest of two men, and then notices the heads lying there. A curious crowd has gathered outside, but Yueyang Sect disciples ask people not to panic. The commander promises that the sect will investigate what happened here. WKX and ZZS stand in the distance and listen to this speech. The sect student adds that under the leadership of the GC, they will find the perpetrators of the crime and hold them accountable. Immediately after this, another group of officials appears and pays tribute to the sect's disciples. WKX states that the Yueyang Sect is stronger than the feudal officials. ZZS looks at WKX, who adds that GC has not left this world and they already treat him as an immortal. ZZS claims that the GC sect is closely guarded and there are constant patrols around it. ZZS explains that there are many martial artists in the city and he didn't think that the Valley of Spirits would dare to cause a stir. WKX responds that this is an insult to the GC who has lost face and Ghost Valley has put a lot of effort into humiliating the Yueyang Sect. He asks ZZS if he thinks this is just the beginning. ZZS doesn't react, he just thinks intensely. WKX asks if he's worried about ZCL, and ZZS asks since when he had a student. WKX asks why ZZS doesn't want to admit that he have a student and suggests that they visit ZJ and meet GC. ZZS doesn't know that WKX intentionally brought him on this show to show ZZS the power of Ghost Valley. He also wanted to know ZZS's reaction to what would happen during the performance. In his own way, WKX reveled in what he had planned and that GC and his sect were humiliated. ZZS still doesn't know exactly how many parties are interested in Glazed Armor, and+
