Are the side novels Canon?
That’s a difficult question to answer.
Zero is definitely canon. If is definitely not canon. DRT is hinted as of the end of the second volume to not be canon, but that remains to be seen. DRK is strongly hinted to be canon, considering the events are referenced in both Kirigiri’s FTEs and the final trial in the first game, as well as Fuhito’s Hit List card in DR:AE. ZZH could go either way–it certainly could fit into the timeline, but the events aren’t referenced anywhere else in canon.

For a lot of new people jumping into DR rping, or DR fans who just like seeing some different stuff to chew on, I thought I’d make a list of what I used to use way back in 2013 and onward. Links will be included whenever possible, but be mindful that some links may be gone due to deleted users, etc. This could be helpful if you were planning on picking up a character, or, perhaps, you wanted to use something as a springboard for your ocs. Quite a bit of these were made when DR3+NDRV3 weren’t released in the US.
Dangan Ronpa Sprites Box--This blog contains sprites and submitted edits for a wide amount of characters. You might be able to find something for DR3 the anime, but that’s very unlikely. You’ll find sprites for DR1, 2, 0, and some miscellaneous characters. Kamakuranon’s Masterpost--This tends to lean more towards the popular characters and has some information for Dangan Mafia games. There are some interesting links you might find, such as character analysis. Sadly, if you’re a Yasuhiro fan, though, you’re going to be fresh out of luck. He wasn’t that popular to begin as a character even when I was starting, so that’s why you’ll hardly see anything for him. Kamase Megane’s Translations--If you’re looking for information on the smaller light novels, this is a good place to start. Here, you’ll find some translations for Dangan Ronpa: Kirigiri, Dangan Ronpa: Togami, Zettai Zetsubou Hagakure, and the like. Some projects aren’t completed, but some are. Someone was kind enough to make a reading for the Dangan Ronpa: Togami light novel. Here’s the link: X A long time ago, Taichichin used to translate quite a bit of DR media way back in the day. They were immensely helpful for DR:AE. Don’t underestimate the work that Yaz and the work they’ve done with SHSL Scans, which has helped with translating the anthology comics and other material. Touko and Mondo is Yaz’s “good shit button”, if you’d like to know how to appease them. I’m so used to seeing Jess and Nate messing around that I mentally link the two of them together. I find them getting Japanese merch from the cafe events and them having little descriptions for what happened on occasion. Sometimes they’ll do stuff for the DR livestreams. Jess has made some translations for DR:K and has gone through quite a bit of the other light novel, DR: Kirigiriso (this story features Santa Shikiba and a few others). Something to keep in mind is that Nate and Jess do their own things, and those blogs are their own personal things. They aren’t “resources”, as the blogs you see are their personal blogs, but you might find their insight on DR and actual Japanese culture of interest. Bear in mind that they aren’t exclusively doing DR things. I’m not sure about Nate, but I know that Jess’s favorite characters are Junko and Kyouko. I think Mukuro as well.

Guide to the entire Danganronpa franchise
Hello! In this blog I'll be explaining how to experience the Danganronpa series, hope this helps you out!
Let's get started~
I'll explain the basic plot of Danganronpa first.
All the main Danganronpa games revolve around 16 students trapped inside Hope's Peak Academy by the bear, Monokuma and forced into a killing game with each other.
Trigger Happy Havoc is the first entry into this franchise, and this is where you should start from, the protagonist- Makoto Naegi is selected to come to Hope's Peak Academy, but ends up trapped in a killing game of despair. you can either play the game "Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc" or watch the anime adaptation of it, which is titled "Danganronpa: The Animation".
I'd definitely recommend playing the game over watching the anime however, the anime wasn't the best adaptation, most of the fun of Danganronpa comes from investigating the murder and coming to a conclusion on your own, and presenting it in the class trial, and the anime lacks the player interactivity which made the games so fun. An alternate option is to watch a "Let's Play" of the games, which I'd still recommend over watching the anime. After completing this game, School Mode is unlocked, which is a bonus mode.
After you're done with Trigger Happy Havoc, you can move on to the second installment into this franchise, "Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair", which doesn't have an anime adaptation. This game revolves around a new protagonist- Hajime Hinata and a new class of students, but this time, instead of being trapped in a school, they're trapped on an island instead, and forced into another killing game. After finishing "Goodbye Despair", Island Mode is unlocked, the bonus mode for "Goodbye Despair".
Danganronpa IF, a light novel is unlocked after beating "Goodbye Despair" as well, don't forget to read that!
After finishing "Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" read the light novel, "Danganronpa/Zero" which is a prequel to the first game, "Trigger Happy Havoc".
Next comes "Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls" which is a spin off 3rd person shooter game which revolves around Toko Fukawa from the 1st game and Komaru Naegi, the sister of Makoto Naegi- the protagonist of the 1st game. This game takes place between "Trigger Happy Havoc" and "Goodbye Despair" but should be played after playing "Goodbye Despair" as it contains spoilers for "Goodbye Despair" and was made after "Goodbye Despair" as well.
After playing "Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls" watch the anime, "Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy" the order to watch it in is:
Future Episode 1 -> Despair Episode 1 -> Future Episode 2 -> Despair Episode 2 -> Future Episode 3 -> Despair Episode 3 -> Future Episode 4 -> Despair Episode 4 -> Future Episode 5 -> Despair Episode 5 -> Future Episode 6 -> Despair Episode 6 -> Future Episode 7 -> Despair Episode 7 -> Future Episode 8 -> Despair Episode 8 -> Future Episode 9 -> Despair Episode 9 -> Future Episode 10 -> Despair Episode 10 -> Future Episode 11 -> Despair Episode 11 -> Future Episode 12 -> Hope OVA.
There's also an addition OVA, "Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the Destroyer of the World" it is set after "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair" and before the "Danganronpa 3: Side: Hope" OVA and focuses on Nagito Komaeda.
After that you can move on to the latest game, "Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony", the protagonist this time is Kaeda Akamatsu,
and once again, you have a brand new class who will be put in another killing game and infected by despair once again~
There are also many side manga and light novels which aren't really important to the main plot:
Manga:
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc 4-Koma KINGS.
Super Danganronpa 2: Komaeda Nagito no Koun to Kibou to Zetsubou.
Super Danganronpa 2: Nanami Chiaki no Sayonara Zetsubou Daibouken.
Super Danganronpa 2: Nankoku Zetsubou Carnival!
Super Danganronpa 2: Dangan Island - Kokoro Tokonatsu, Kokoronpa.
Super Danganronpa 2: Sayonara Zetsubou Gauken: 4-Koma KINGS.
New Danganronpa V3: Minna no Koroshiai Shin Gakki.
Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer.
Small Danganronpa 1.2 Light.
Danganronpa: Academy of Hope and High School Students of Despair.
Super Danganronpa 2: Sayonara Zetsubou Gauken.
Zettai Zetsubou Shoujo Danganronpa Another Episode.
Zettai Zetsubou Shoujo Danganronpa Another Episode: Genocider Mode.
Light Novels:
Danganronpa 1.2 Beautiful Days.
Danganronpa: Kirigiri.
Danganronpa: Togami.
Makoto Naegi Secret File.
Ultra Despair Hagakure.
These are all the installments in the Danganronpa series thus far, hope this was helpful, bye!
I would also really appreciate it a lot if you guys would go give this post a like on Anime Amino! Thank you so much! - http://aminoapps.com/p/d4h4jir

What are the chances of you moving your Zettai Zetsubou Hagakure and Beautiful Days translations onto dreamwidth?
If there’s a demand for that, then I’m willing to do so. I originally started posting things on dreamwidth when I went into more involved projects, so people could discuss with each other in the comments unlike on tumblr where people are scattered, but also dw is kind of just, better in general,,,

I originally drew this for an open commissions post I am going to be making, but it doesn’t quite fit what I'm going for--so I’m posting it on its own.  Enjoy some super sexy Future Foundation Hagakure, courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood sexbomb (that’s me).

TBH I don't think anyone has talked about how uncomfortable Leon really is during the whole Zettai Zetsubou Hagakure flashbacks, and that goes way beyond his 3909 rejections of Kanon.
If you have time, read the flashback chapters again and you'll notice that his problem is that he really can't stand seeing Kanon crying because of him, and each time she tears up or looks like she's about to cry he does all he can to stop her from doing so, usually by taking back whatever he said (most of the time confronting her about her problematic behavior)
The first time she cries in the novel it's just after he, in a very serious way, begged her to understand that he doesn't like her that way. As soon as she cries, he swallows it and pats her head to comfort her.
Next time she tears up it's when he's confronting her about her stalking, and after noticing her face he quickly says that "it makes him feel popular" so it's fine with him, because he's just "worried about how she feels when seeing him on dates". Now, that's a very Leon thing to say but even so it's obviously a lie to stop her from crying, because a couple lines later he says that the situation 'It's not that great for him either' which contradicts what he said before, you see?. Basically he was like “Hey, hey, don’t panic! I’m not troubled by your stalking, naaaaah I’m chill, I’m worried about YOU. See? I don’t hate you pls don’t cry.”
So the routine is: Kanon does something awful (pushing her feelings onto him, stalking him, etc etc), he confronts her about it because he's seriously not okay with what she's doing, she cries when she realizes what she's done and fears he'll hate her, he notices she's crying and takes back his words, or does something to cheer her up, she notices he cares or believes they're improving and so she pursues again, and the circle starts.
TL;DR: Yeah Leon's carefree, but he's as troubled for the situation as anyone would normally be, but he's way too soft and nice in this situation for his own good.

Zettai Zetsubou Hagakure Chapter 1 [Hagakure Yasuhiro]
(Here's the beginning part of this novel! This DOES have some spoilers since it is set during the events of DR:AE, following Hagakure and Kanon. That said, I don't think there are any spoilers beyond the Prologue in this particular segment, although there will be more serious spoilers later.
I felt bad about taking so long to get it done but in addition to my being distracted, this part is way longer than the other parts I've translated so far)
--
Some time before the "Children's Revolution"--
They call it the Future Foundation, but it's totally not at all. For serious, why are we moving out in helicopters in this day and age? If you got a fancy name like the Future Foundation, why can't you give us a Cessna or a warphole or something?
"--Uurrrgh!"
As I started to throw up, my coworkers started saying things like "Stick it out" and "We're almost at Towa City," and all gave their own reactions to try and prevent the inside of the helicopter from becoming a real hell-icopter, but I wasn't actually airsick at all.
This was an act. I was just pretending to be sick. It's not that I didn't feel a pang of guilt for tricking my coworkers, but it can't be helped. I mean, I'm over 8 million yen in debt. I had to act like I was totally wasted on the helicopter heading to Towa City if I wanted to pay that back.
Beneath the "missing blue sky"--the helicopter carrying twenty of us Future Foundation members arrived at the helipad that had been made on the rooftop of one of the buildings.
"W-Wait, let me ouuuuuuutttt!" I pushed my way past my coworkers and jumped out of the helicopter as fast as I could go. I kept going, down the emergency staircase to the outdoors, and finally let out a sigh as I hit the bottom.
"...The plan's a success so far at least."
Now all I had to do was find some expensive stuff to stash in my bag. Towa City's machines were gonna sell big. I guess they're all about the latest, most cutting-edge technology in the world, so the techno-geeks would fall all over themselves trying to get their hands on one of those... So I just need to steal some Towa City tools and machines-- ...I mean, borrow them, and temporarily pawn them off to generate some money, is definitely what I meant.
So that's why I had to go out of my way to pretend like I was airsick, so I could sneak out of the building on my own. I was patting myself on the back, but I'd feel a little awkward stealing from the building the Future Foundation helicopter had landed on.
"So without further delay..."
Expensive stuff... I scoped out the area. But I was right in the middle of the business district. Modern looking buildings were just lined up one after the other, towering over their surroundings, and I couldn't see anything like what I was looking for.
"I guess it's like, he who knows most speaks least, huh."
I kinda got the feeling that maybe I was using that phrase wrong, but whatever, no one was even listening. I heard today's a holiday, and since this was the business district, I didn't sense anyone else in the area. Time to go through the business district and keep my eyes peeled for anything expensive.
"...Mmph!"
I went into an alleyway between two tall buildings, and something caught my eye. It looked kinda like a payphone--what is this?
It was a glass rectangular box. There wasn't anything inside. Modern art? Some kind of sculpture? No, it can't be that. I'd read something in a pamphlet like this. Anything you find on the streets in Towa City has about an 80% chance of being some kind of machine. This must also be some kind of mysterious high-tech machine, so I'd probably get a lot of money if I pawned it.
"I've decided to make you the first of my spoils!"
I'll steal--borrow this, and make a down payment on my debt! ...Or that's what I wanted to say, but it was the size of a payphone. I can't do anything about it if it's too big... But I can't just give up!
"Nuoooooooohhhh!"
Adopting a stance as if I were carrying a cabinet out from the scene of a fire, I tried to pick up the mystery machine. A red light and a resounding warning noise like a police siren started up. The erratic ringing in my ears alerted me to danger.
"No--"
This wasn't a warning siren, it was an anti-burglary buzzer! They're gonna mistake me for a thief!
"Y-You've got it all wrong! I'm just temporarily borrowing it, to temporarily exchange it for money, so I'm not really a thief or anything like that...!"
I realized that there wasn't actually anyone there for me to explain myself to. On the other side of the street, about 20 meters ahead--
It was Monokuma--
Monokuma, red left eye gleaming, was rushing my way.
"Huuuhhhhh?!"
What was going on?!
Was he coming to punish me because he mistook me for a thief? Or, it couldn't be the start of the second semester of the School Life of Mutual Killing? I don't want eitherrrrrrrrrrrr! Wait, now that I mention it--!
"That's right...!"
Monokuma rushing over here in the first place has gotta be some kinda mistake! This is some kinda dream or illusion or, whatever, the point is it's a fake! Whaaaaat, I get it, there's nothing else to be done if it's a fake. I'll just squeeze my eyes shut and then check again.
"Huuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?!"
Everything in my field of vision is still exactly the same!
Monokuma, red left eye gleaming, was rushing my way. By now, he'd already crossed the street and had entered the alleyway, having closed in to a distance of about 10 meters away from me.
"Wh-Why did it have to be Monokumaaaaa?!"
It extended sharp claws from both paws--Eh? That almost looks like he's trying to kill me--
"Th-This can't be happening! This can't be happeniiiiiiiiing!"
I had to find some way to escape from here--but my brain went into a haze of recalling my worst memories, and my body went stiff. A cold sweat broke out all over me. I knew my head was losing blood. Monokuma was coming closer. But I couldn't move my body.
"H-Hold on, man! If we just talk it out I'm sure we can come to an understanding!"
"..."
Monokuma didn't give a single word in reply. All he did was dash and dash with all his might, shortening the distance between us. If I don't run, I'll die. No... he's already... too close for me to make it... In front of my eyes were Monokuma's claws, sharp all over, glittering like a demon.
--It was over...
I let out a brief sigh as I fell into despair.
The air trembled with a jolt of electricity.
The flesh on my cheek shook just barely.
The sound of an explosion that I thought might crack my skull roared out.
I opened my eyes, even though I wasn't sure when I closed them.
"...Huh?"
My legs had fallen out from under me, and in front of my eyes was the scattered wreckage of Monokuma. It seemed like his internal bomb had detonated, since his corpse was in a pretty pitiful state. ...Uhhhhh, he self-destructed? No, but, why...
"What are you doing, you moron?! It's dangerous here!"
I turned around after hearing a voice come from behind me. A high school girl in a blazer-type uniform was standing there. A super-cutie with a chestnut-colored bob of hair and bright eyes! But she looked a little like a gyaru, so she lost some points there. --No, that's not what I meant! The schoolgirl was clutching a Future Foundation hacking gun in her right hand.
"...Uhhhhh."
This schoolgirl was in the Future Foundation? Nah, I've never seen this chick. But then why's she have a hacking gun? Completely ignoring my confusion, she took my hand, skirt fluttering. The milky skin peeking out over her dark blue socks was dazzling--wait, no, that's seriously not what I meant!
"J-Just who are you?!"
"Save the introductions for later! This place is dangerous no matter how you look at it!"
Who knows why, but the schoolgirl broke into a run, tugging me along by the hand.
"They won't find us over here, at least for the moment." We stopped in an empty lot after running between office buildings and heading down a narrow alleyway. "The Monokuma shouldn't be able to fit through such a narrow path." It was true that the alleyway was only about 50 centimeters wide, so it would be impossible for a Monokuma's body to follow us through to here.
No, more importantly, who was this schoolgirl? With her chestnutty hair and gyaru-ish makeup, who had the air of someone who'd suddenly start having kids right about when she hit 20 and head back to her hometown--or on the flipside... even though as a high school girl she had to be coming up on 20 already, she didn't even have a hair out of place. Just like when she blew apart that Monokuma with the hacking gun, it was pretty hard to think of her as a normal person.
Well, at any rate--
"Y, Youuu... saved me..."
If the schoolgirl hadn't led me here, I'd be dead a few dozen times over. 'Cuz I mean, there had to have been over 30 Monokuma that I saw on the way over here. Judging by their movements, those Monokuma weren't the same kind as the headmaster of the School Life of Mutual Killing was, so maybe they were mass-produced somewhere during The Tragedy--but that doesn't change the fact that they're dangerous. I'd seen a whole lot of corpses. They were racking up a whole lot of corpses. All of them were torn to shreds, and they looked so grotesque, I thought I was gonna throw up more times than I could count. And on top of that--
"I still wanna know about the Monokuma too, but for serious, what were those brats doing...?"
For about every three Monokuma, there was one of those weirdo kids that appeared nearby. Strange kids wearing some kind of imitation Monokuma helmets, and all wearing the same school uniform.
"I'm definitely worried about that too, but before that, shouldn't we be introducing ourselves?"
"Ahhhhh... You're right, there's definitely that too!"
She'd already saved me this much, but... as long as I didn't know who this person was and what their situation was, I couldn't just believe what she told me too easily.
"All right, I'll go first--call me Hagakure Yasuhiro. I'm a twenty-something-year-old onii-san with just a dash of sex appeal!"
"Huh? What do you mean, twenty-SOMETHING, so how old exactly?"
"I-I'm not hiding it on purpose, for serious! I can't just ruin a mysterious plot point from the main game by telling you in the spinoff!"
"I have noooo idea what you're talking about but... Well then, mister Hagakure, let's talk about what you're doing in a place like this. When I saved you, you were trying to get some phone box thing up on your shoulders, yeah?"
"A-Adults have adult circumstances...!"
A glint appeared in the schoolgirl's eyes. "...You weren't trying to steal it, were you?"
"Don't be stupid! A member of the Future Foundation like me would never do something so extraordinarily nefarious, for serious! If I resorted to thievery, I'd wind up cursed by Buddha into perpetuity!"
"Buddha doesn't curse people, does he--wait! Eh?! What?! What did you say just now?!"
"I told you, I'd wind up cursed by Buddha."
"Not that part! The part before it!"
"Uhhhhh, the part where I work for the Future Foundation?"
"Yes! That! The Future Foundation, seriously?!"
What was she so surprised for...? Wait, ah, I got it. She's a fan? She looks up to us for rising up and trying to rebuild the world after Despair? If that's the case, I'll act the part as much as possible when I answer. "Indeed! I am the ultimate weapon of the Future Foundation, Hagakure Yasuhiro! My arrival in this place was also to fulfill my duty to the Future Foundation, so it was most definitely NOT for some low-life reason such as stealing objects of value, for serious!"
Bam! This is in the bag...! With this, the schoolgirl's probably gonna be my fan for life. Now if there's trouble, I can just have the schoolgirl look out for--whuh?
"..."
The schoolgirl had a very cold expression, and wasn't saying a single word in response. Her eyes were unfocused, and for some reason they seemed as if they were colored with disdain... What if! She noticed that I was acting like a thief anyway?! Like, I can't believe the Future Foundation would stoop to acting like common thieves, is this guy for real, is he stringing me along or something?! While I was fearing such ulterior motives, the schoolgirl opened her mouth, eyes still unfocused.
"Choberiba..."[1]
...Huh?
"Using a word like 'choberiba'? Way uncool." I blurted out my impressions before I could even think to stop myself. I mean, I seriously hadn't heard that word in like over a decade, y'know? That word is the living dead. It's O5Y. Everyone was Over it 5 Years ago.[2]
What did "choberiba" even mean, anyway? I'm sure it was... super very bad? 'S that about it? Having the poor taste to use a word like "choberiba" in this day and age is super very bad all on its own, for serious. As I was having those impolite feelings, the schoolgirl fixed her gaze on me after having kept it unfocused this whole time, and her eyes started welling up with moisture. The tears pooled up over her lower eyelashes, and I could clearly envision that the next time she blinked, they would spill out.
Huhhhhhh?! Why is she about to cry?!
"M-My bad! Let me apologize! 'Choberiba' isn't all that uncool, for serious!" This girl's physical ability wasn't just for show... If she made me eat a dropkick like in some romcom manga, there's no way I'd get out of that unscathed. I bent my hips at a 90 degree angle and bowed my head. "I beg your pardooon!"
But the schoolgirl shook her head. "Mm-mm, that's not it..."
"Then why'd you look like you were about to cry?"
"I wouldn't say I was about to cry..."
"Well, what WOULD you say?"
"..."
After a few seconds of silence, the schoolgirl raised her voice and let out a cry after all.
"Wwweeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
"..."
Oi oi, I dunno what's going on... But I can't just leave this girl behind and go back to the helicopter on my own. And anyway, Monokuma are loitering all over town in the first place, so I can't go back on my own no matter what. I kept waiting, standing stiffly upright until the schoolgirl stopped crying.
After about 10 minutes, she finally calmed down, snuffling and blowing her nose. "Oooghh... Sorry, I'm okay alreadyyyyy..."
...What just went on inside your head?
It's not like I didn't wanna ask something like that, but I figured that would probably end up with me tripping over another land mine. I firmly squashed the urge inside of me. "Now that I think about it, I still haven't heard you introduce yourself. Just who are you, and where do you come from? Though if you saved me from the Monokuma, you probably can't be a bad guy."
As if the sobbing leading up to now had never even happened, the schoolgirl answered with an indifferent expression. "I'm Nakajima Kanon. Nakajima spelled like 'friendly island', and Kanon spelled like 'the sound of flowers'. I'm just a humble baseball club anager-may."[3]
"...Anagermay? Is that a country or something?"
"No no no, any way you think about it it's supposed to be 'manager', right? Isn't that just common sense?"
"Not any common sense I know..."
No, more importantly--
"A team manager? What's a high school girl with such a peaceful job description doing in a place like this?"
"Why am I here...? That's what I wanna know..." Kanon-cchi let out a deep sigh, and began telling her frankly ridiculous story.
For half a year, Kanon-cchi had been held captive in an apartment complex in the area, without even understanding what was going on, but this afternoon--somebody broke the door open from the hallway, so she thought her captivity was finally coming to an end, but the one who broke the door had actually been a Monokuma--and without any warning, it had rushed to attack her--
The Future Foundation, having coincidentally entered the apartment complex at the same time as the Monokuma raid, took care of the Monokuma--she established a plan to escape Towa City together with the Future Foundation--however, another wave of Monokuma attacked, and the Future Foundation became scattered--
She was surrounded by Monokuma and children, and kidnapped again, and made to undertake some test playing tag with the Monokuma--once she cleared the test, she had a bracelet put on her for no reason she could understand, and then she was released into the city again--it seemed as if somehow, the children were using the Monokuma in a terrorist attack to make this city a paradise only for themselves--
So then, now--
And I guess that's what happened. If she'd been held captive for half a year, maybe Kanon-cchi was related to someone who was made to participate in the School Life of Mutual Killing--in other words, maybe she was one of the rescuees, and if not, I didn't have a single clue. All this crap about child terrorists and revolution and stuff had to be some kind of fictional story or bad joke.
"...You're joking, right?"
"Do I look like I'm joking?" Kanon-cchi watched me with steady eyes. Kanon-cchi didn't really look like modern gyarus so much as the outdated kind of gyaru, and she gave off a pretty fickle impression somehow... But in her eyes, I couldn't see any trace of her telling a joke.
"...So, what about that hacking gun?"
"Ohh, I borrowed it from one of the Future Foundation people that was killed."
--Killed?
"...C'mon, you're seriously pulling my leg here, right?"
"I told you, I'm not joking. Didn't I just tell you? All the Future Foundation people were lost in the Monokuma attack."
"You didn't say anything about them being killed!"
"I was obviously using some tact and omitting the details!"
"..."
When she's talking about the Future Foundation going into the apartment complex, she probably means Togami-cchi and the others in the main squad. ...I wonder if Togami-cchi's safe?
"Speaking of that, weren't you in the Future Foundation too, Hagakure? Why didn't you come to the apartment complex with everyone else?"
"Ahh, I--we're the reserve squad."
"Reserve squad?"
"Our squad was created for in case something happens to the main squad, so, well, kinda like a bonus squad. The main event for this mission was just a little thing like answering a call for help coming from some apartment complex, so us guys in the reserve squad totally let our guard down--but looks like it wasn't as peaceful a story as it sounded..."
Could this be... related to The Tragedy?
But isn't The Tragedy over with? For serious, just what is going on here... Even if I asked Kanon-cchi, she'd just tell me bluntly she didn't know. Ahh, I wanna go home. I wanna act like I don't know anything and go rearrange my OOPArts... But this isn't the time to be saying that!
"At any rate, let's head back to the building where the reserve squad's helicopter is docked."
I ended up getting rescued by this high school girl against my will... but I'm Hagakure Yasuhiro, with the Future Foundation's 14th Division. I can't just keep being the token comic relief forever!

[1] Since I translated later chapters first I get to repeat the note about "choberiba" here, for people who later come read the novel in order: "choberiba" is a slang word that is short for "chou very bad" (super very bad). I couldn't think of a good enough English equivalent to fit all of the instances it's used in throughout the novel (and the connotations it has) so I'll leave it intact.
[2] In Japanese it's MH5 = "Maji de, Hakitai, 5byou mae" (Seriously, I wanted to puke 5 seconds ago). Or that's a result I got from Googling, but it looks like you can put a lot of verbs in between "seriously" and "5 seconds ago" to be the middle letter of the acronym. When Hagakure says MH5, he goes on to say "Maji de Horobite 5nen wa tatsu", which means "seriously, it was done for 5 years ago".
[3] Kanon inverts words a lot in this novel. I translated it as Pig Latin (because Pig Latin is fairly easy to decipher for English speakers, and these inversions are similar in terms of difficulty), but some of them seem to be common jargon, such as the inversion for "manager" she used (maneeja > jaamane). She does this to multiple words throughout the novel and thus it's a speech pattern, so I'm just adding this note to explain the practice.

Hmmm, does anyone think Kanondos is clever/resourceful/still salty enough to be the mastermind of Mirai-hen?
I’m torn.

The DRAE quartet protagonist
I was looking in the folder from the academi and I found this drawning unfinished. So, for the yesterday episode, I decided to do finnished! A/N: Hey Kanon, where are you? Are you ok?

Hey, two things -- first, thanks for all your hard work on translating. Second, I think "bogus" would be a totally appropriate out-dated slang for "chouberiba" in Ultimate Despair Hagakure.
Thank you!
What they did with the outdated slang translation was something I was cool with in the official English translation, but now that you mention it bogus does sound better in the contexts it’s used…

Um, so, while I was rereading Zettai Zetsubou Hagakure, I was a little surprised to notice that Yasuhiro calls Kanon by her first name and Kanon doesn't use honorifics for him. If I'm remembering correctly, I haven't seen many other Dangan Ronpa characters use this level of familiarity. Can you possibly provide any more context or insight as to why they're referring to each other like that?
I should disclaim that I'm no real expert on Japanese culture and have never been to Japan, so I think a lot of subtle native connotations are lost on me. That said, Kanon calling Hagakure by his last name without any honorifics isn't polite, but I wouldn't say it's particularly intimate either--case in point, Togami also calls everyone by their last names with no honorifics, and I think everyone can agree that he's not doing it as an intimate gesture. From my translating Beautiful Days rn I think Hinata does the same. It's just neglecting to show the respect that -san or so on would show. So I think Kanon is thinking along the same lines.
I did also notice that Hagakure calls Kanon by her first name, though. That one sticks out more, particularly since iirc he calls everyone else by their last names. I don't have any explanation as to why he chooses to call her Kanon-cchi and not Nakajima-cchi, but that at least is more intimate by my understanding, though presumably not as intimate as "Kanon" by itself would be. If anyone else would like to contribute a deeper explanation, please feel free; I admit I don't know much about the -cchi suffix since Hagakure is the first character I ever saw using it.

Wait. So in the last chapter, Hagakure says he has an Oedipus complex. But then he goes on to elaborate and what he says clearly (thankfully) doesn't match up with the definition of what an Oedipus complex actually is. So do you have any idea what's going on there? Is it more a situation where Hagakure has no idea what he's talking about, or does that term possibly mean something different in Japan or what?
The word used is マザコン which is an abbreviation of "mother complex". I was under the impression that that still had sexual connotations to it (even if it was sometimes hyperbolic/a joke, as I think Oedipus complex sometimes is in English). However, the Japanese wiki article on "mother complex" suggests the usage between Japanese and English differs more than that and a more accurate translation might be "mama's boy", so I guess I will edit the chapter accordingly. I wasn't sure if using "Oedipus complex" would open a can of worms or not but I didn't look into it that deeply. So thank you!
