Fight! Until She Can No More!

Fer and Merle were released from the dark bindings of the shadows. Harshly, they were tossed to the ground and only groans and minor yelps were heard.

Fer looked at Merle, who seemed to have already taken a harsh beating, and a worry took over him.

He ran over quickly, putting his hand on her shoulder.

A jagged breath escaped Merle, but she nodded and responded shakily, “So you’re...”

“Yeah...”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she sounded upset, definitely upset.

He rubbed the side of his arm and sighed, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

No reply.

It wasn’t an accusation but a reference to why he didn’t tell her his identity. To protect her as she wanted to protect him.

“Look, Natalya,” he kept his hand on her arm, “I don’t blame you for not telling me. We both just wanted to protect each other.”

“I-“

“How cute. But no time for conversation. So-“

Fer stood up, a determination to end this now.

“The only one paying tonight will be you,” he hissed.

“You’re weak. You’ve been weakened by her. You had an opening, a chance to defeat me. And did you do? Used your power as light to save her. You put your emotions before your goals and now look where are now. Blinded by love... turning down an opportunity, for her?... It’s sickening. So now, I’m going to get rid of your flaw.”

Now Merle spat back, “You hurt him to no end and yet you’re blaming me... No shame, huh?”

“No more arguing! Let’s end this now!”

Fer ran forward, disregarding the fact his miraculous was running out; he was ready to swipe an attack, but before he could, the darkness around them crept out, springing from all directions. He was quickly pulled back as one of the shadow snakes slammed down, missing him by a hair.

“Running in will get us killed at this rate.”

Fer sighed, “She knows my moves... I’m predictable to her... And your power won’t be useful against her...”

And again, the shadow crept up around the two.

“Then perhaps a higher ground will give you an advantage?”

The floor disappeared under them- no, it reappeared further away as the two were now stories in the air, falling down as the shadows released them. Merle’s fall was slower and she managed to grab a hold of Fer’s hand, pulling him aside as they collided with a metal beam, but out of Coatlicue’s sight. The impact knocked the air out of both of them. This was going to be a harsh battle.

“Damnit...” Fer cursed.

Another painful hit, another disadvantage noticed. Merle rubbed her foot and winced. Coatlicue was out for blood. She definitely wanted Merle to suffer the most. She wanted Natalya to go down for good.

“We need to get close to her to get the akuma out. Any theories where it is?”

“The necklace... It stands out too much,” Fer tsked, “But how are we going to get close? We hardly can with all those monsters she throws at us.”

Merle held her hand under her chin.

Strategy. Strategy.

As she thought, a shadow creature- a winged snake- loomed below them. It circled, waiting for its prey. Fer squinted at it, but soon glanced up at Merle when she snapped her fingers.

“She’s ranged. That’s her disadvantage. You have to hold her back and I have to get close.”

“No- NO!” he jerked up, “She’s out for you, Nat... I can’t let-“

“I’m the only one who can get rid of the akuma. I’m better in close combat. I’m unpredictable; she knows nothing about my technique or abilities. You have to trust me.”

With a heavy heart, Fer nodded. He took a deep breath and stood up. With his whip attached to a higher beam, he lowered down and walked forward.

The shadow monsters looked around but he kept his head high. He looked Coatlicue in the eyes; he looked her in the eyes.

“Why are you pushing me back, Nantli?” Fer mocked, “If you’re so angry with me, if the akuma brought you to me, why not fight me? Because you know I will win? Because you know you’ve been cornered? Does it embarrass you to know I’m defeating you? Did you tell that to Necalli?”

Coatlicue held up her hands. She scoffed under her breath and watched as her successor talked back. No gratitude for anything... such unruly words... He truly has lost his way.

She did not respond back.

Only the shadows spoke for her as they began to attack.

With that, Fer jumped back and launched his whip at them. Hit them until they can’t hit back. Fight until they can’t anymore. Enough force will break them! Fight for her... stand up for everything, for yourself!

The darkness peeled back to reveal Fer.

His miraculous beeped as it ran down to a final diamond, but this was just motivation to win. He ran forward, dodging the other phantoms, but then he felt a harsh blow. Something jumped out of nowhere, throwing him across the place and onto the ground. As Fer looked up, he saw the shadow fall over him, pinning him to the ground. No, it pulled him up, so he could see what would unfold.

Merle jumped down from a beam. She was going to attack Coatlicue. But something was waiting for her.

“You must think you’re clever, Zenzontle.”

As those last words echoed out, a wave of black collided into Merle and threw her against a beam.

A harsh yelp sprang out of the Blackbird and now, the shadow fusion that attacked was looming over her.

Jovita Gonzalez’s “The Mockingbird”: Indigenous and Mexican/mestizo influences on a folktale about traditional environmental knowledge from the Rio Grande Valley, from 1927, when the State of Texas made the mockingbird it’s state bird

Cultural hybridity and environmental awareness play a key role in the tales [early Mexican folktales in the Rio Grand Valley of Texas] - especially in the story of how the mockingbird got its white feathers. [Jovita Gonzalez’s telling of the story, “The Mocking Bird”] recounts the tale of how the bird learned humility after a nasty run-in with a hawk and his ensuing rescue by a dove. The dove patches the mockingbird’s wings with her own white feathers and the mockingbird concludes that all things happen by the grace of God. His white feathers always remind him of this episode. […] Charming as this story is, it conceals a hidden message. Jose E. Limon has argued that [Gonzalez’s telling of] the tales “are artistically implicated in a running political commentary on ethnic, gender, and class relations.” [...] The second line reads: “There was a time when all the creatures of Nature talked a common language. […] The language was Spanish.” Gonzalez makes an outlandish claim for the ubiquity of Spanish as the ur-language. […] She includes such a claim to show that Spanish was the language of the Rio Grand Valley before the American takeovers of 1836 and 1848, as well as before the agricultural transformation of the land in the early-twentieth century. By juxtaposing a commonplace of American Indian mythology with an assertion of the primacy of the Spanish language, she reveals the complications and contradictions in mestizo identity. […] Using the Spanish name for mockingbird (el zenzontle) she juxtaposes a melodic word alongside a significantly clunkier and unflattering English name, “mockingbird.” Further, the Spanish word zenzontle is actually borrowed from the Aztecan language Nahuatl and means “four hundred voices.”

Thus, from the beginning, Gonzalez establishes themes of cultural hybridity by emphasizing aspects of Mexican and indigenous cultures still influential in South Texas; she also details an environmental awareness. […] “Huisache” was also originally a Nahuatl word Mexicans adopted into Spanish, with Anglo-Americans following suit; it denotes a shrubby acacia tree with fragrant bulbs that grows in Texas, especially in the Rio Grand Valley. With the integration of these terms, she shows that traditional language and knowledge of the natural environment endure.

The story was published and read aloud at a meeting of the Texas Folklore Society in 1927, the year Texas adopted the mockingbird as the state bird. How did the mockinbird’s mestizo background sound to the ears of a largely Anglo-American and staunchly Texan audience? The folklorists appreciated Gonzalez’s work as a collection of quaint, apolitical tales that did not threaten their understanding of history on the border. However, Gonzalez subverted their apolitical agenda by documenting these stories. […] She also positions these folktales as stern critiques of the ecological revolution in the Rio Grande Valley. […] The mockingbird’s lesson of humility critiques the transformation of South Texas lands, water, and culture brought about by Anglo-American influence and land-use practices. The mockingbird learns that he cannot make the spring arrive, the flowers bloom, and the birds sing. His early insistence on this power […] almost ends in fatal disaster for him. But he manages to recover [and] acknowledges a higher and wiser power. […] In South Texas of the early-twentieth century, droves of farmers arrived in answer to the call of advertisements spread across the Midwest and the South that portrayed a fertile oasis awaiting them in the Rio Grande Valley [and] upon arrival, however, they found they would need to irrigate. [And so the] farmers hubristically institute their never-ending “spring” of irrigation fed by the Rio Grande.

FLORA

Predominan las selvas secas y subhúmedas que se localizan al centro y noroeste de la entidad; en las zonas costeras se desarrolla vegetación acuática como manglares y tulares. De la superficie estatal, 22% está destinado a la agricultura; destaca el cultivo de pastizales para el consumo del ganado.

FAUNA

Selva húmeda: faisán, loro, guacamaya, colibrí, zenzontle, cardenal, ruiseñor, tejón, martucha, zorrillo, pecarí, mapache, serpiente y nutria. En el manglar: flamingo, pato, golondrina y lagarto. En matorral: víbora de cascabel. En ambientes acuáticos: tortuga blanca, caguama, mero, rubia, caracol, pulpo, delfín, langosta, tiburón, pargo y huachinango. En los bosques: murciélagos zapotero y dos líneas, pájaro Toh, halcón, codorniz, chachalaca, boa ratonera, rana y sapo. Animales en peligro de extinción: armadillo, puerco espín, manatí, mono araña, saraguato negro, tortuga carey y oso hormiguero.
