Zaldy Goco and his Instagram Account (Why the people working for RuPaul deserve more recognition)

To talk about Zaldy Goco, it is easiest we start by talking about the famous Drag Queen, RuPaul Charles. This isn’t the most conventional opening statement to any type of blog, but it’s what I’m running with. RuPaul Charles is the Kingpin of drag, a monarch to most people who follow the art. He is the creator of the revolutionary and four-time Emmy award-winning show “Rupaul’s Drag Race”  However one of the titles the show has been awarded is the “The Costume Designers Guild Award for Best in Variety, Reality and Live television”  This was awarded to none other than Zaldy Goco, who we will be talking about today.

Whilst talking about RuPaul is the best way of showing his most recent work, the Filipino fashion designer actually burst into the scene by creating and designing the costumes for Michael Jackson's “This Is It” tour, along with work for Lady GaGa’s “Monster Ball” tour, Britney Spears’ “Femme Fatale” Tour and working with the Cirque du Soleil, he has made a name for himself as not only a fashion designer but a costume designer as well. He is also very present on Instagram, with 20.7k followers as of the time of writing. To properly analyse his work, we need to start at the very beginning.

Zaldy was born in Connecticut, USA in 1966 under the name Salvador Goco, he was nicknamed Zaldy from a very young age by his family, he legally changed his name in 1984. His grandmother sparked his interest in fashion when she taught him how to sew. He studied at the Parsons School of Design where he graduated. He originally began his fashion career as a model. He modelled both Female and Male clothing until he got signed to star in Levi’s commercial in full drag. The advert was banned from the USA. This was in 1995. Multiple celebrities have worn Zaldy dresses on the red carpet. Beyonce wore a Zaldy dress in 2005 on the cover of Vanity Fair (pictured below)

In the late ’80s, Zaldy designed for RuPaul Charles for the first time. RuPaul was breaking through into the Drag Scene and was making an influence of being an icon for the LGBT scene. He wanted to make drastic fashion statements and who was better than Zaldy to help him make those statements. Zaldy now spends his time with a team of 3 other people designing and making all of RuPauls Gowns on RuPaul's Drag Race. Some of my personal favourites are pictured below

He has also designed RuPauls Met Gala outfit which was sequinned to the gods and was honestly? Stunning

Now, as much as I would love to continue talking about how amazing his Drag designs are, the thing I’m really here to talk about is his use of Instagram. Zaldy (@zaldynyc) has 20.7k followers which are a small number compared to the people he designs for who normally surpass the 1 million mark. His Instagram doesn’t seem to follow a theme, however, he has been attending a lot of awards shows, therefore, is posting more and more group pictures of himself and the cast of RuPaul's Drag Race. If you scroll back a bit, he posts pictures mainly with a grayscale background with the outfit pictured as the main highlight of the image to keep it as the main focal point of the image. This is a good way to portray your images and I would personally do this. I believe that colour should be an important part of any outfit. Even in Zaldy’s black and white work, he uses a pink sheen to make the white truly pop. Pictured below is RuPaul’s season 8 opening look which has this exact theme.

His Instagram seems to have a liking for the colour red, as this is usually used as a highlight colour when he’s posted a lot of dimmer pictures. Instagram's layout has a very specific way of presenting your posts, therefore his layout is confined to this. This is one of the main reasons why I wouldn’t use Instagram to present my work. He posts every 1-3 days, this is consistent enough for him to keep his followers interactive and interested. 

His Instagram captions tend to be short and to the point, the only exception for this is when he posts thank you posts after winning awards. He also posts art of designs he is working on. He has a very interesting style and uses a mixture of different art techniques to create them. Pictured below is one of his designs

To conclude, Zaldy uses his influence to post his work and to increase his popularity. I will definitely be inspired by his way of posting images with grayscale backgrounds
