One Day One Shot

Another entry in the Freeza Saga series of Figuarts - most of which was only sold on Premium Bandai, of course.

Gohan is such a great figure. It fixes some of the proportion issues the first (Saiyan Saga) Gohan figure has, and it makes great use of the limited articulation the smaller body style is capable of.

The different hair options and facial expressions are perfect too.

But if I had a complaint - and it's more of a criticism of the whole line recently - it's that you can't swap heads with the previous Gohan releases. Not without modification, anyway.

Some of the heads included with this version would look great on the Saiyan Saga Gohan. Just like the long hair heads would look great on this sculpt.

Which is a shame. This is a great figure. They've been putting out some truly excellent toys, but it feels like a blatantly greedy decision that ultimately takes away from the overall enjoyment of the figure.

The 28th Amendment?

After a long silence, Sleeping Beauty's social media seems to be (somewhat) back to life, with this story:

This is part of a national public awareness and lobby campaign organized by a US NGO, Equal means Equal, aiming to promote the formal inclusion of a 28th Amendment (the Equal Rights Amendment) in the US Constitution.

This is the current state of play: what is needed, according to Equal means Equal, is a final push, in order to make something started in 1972 a reality. This state of play is unthinkable, to an European, by the way: gender equality became effective on our ravaged, postwar continent for many reasons, including the most practical you could think of. Those are usually related to voting rights, the acknowledgement of women's contribution to the war effort, the economic and social reconstruction process and even a faux-equalitarian ideology, like in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union (loudly promote gender equality, but at the same time, take away any legal guarantee and protection of private ownership of anything, from houses to shops to banks).

The final push for success is a public appeal to POTUS to act on it, launched as a side event at the New York FOCUS Art Fair, a contemporary art rendezvous' with a strong Gen Z flair:

I was particularly intrigued by this: 'Once a magazine, Reserved has evolved into an annual hardcover print edition collector’s item'. A mythical thing, the stuff of legend - to each generation its own, I suppose.

Around 100 billion bucks LESS than the around 50-60 billion a year additional projection.

Oh, ad the IRS staff umbers were down 8% - so o net new hiring – less than one I three people calling the IRS could get someone to answer the phone!

The IRS is sitting on 57 billion bucks in unspent money authorised by the US – the proposal is to use similar technology to ChatGPT to help people fill out and pay the right amount of tax – at the IRS.

Schweikert also talks about broadband to the Nations at a fraction of the cost that has been squandered on providing no service at all – compared to simple solutions. Rather than subsidies that do nothing to deliver broadband. He also talks about insulin – using subsidies. There is generic insulin – sold cheaper than the 16 billion subsidies paid to big pharma (15-minute mark) that lowered the price of insulin made by big pharma. Subsidize expensive insulin rather than make eve cheaper generic insulin.

Hey, I'm pretty interested in contests, and have noticed a lot of interesting Pokemon while watching them! What exactly are some of the common contest breeds?

Hello! There are many different types of contests; beauty pageant style contests, performance based contests, battle contests, I've even seen a sub-type of beauty pageant contests that focus on pokemon that are often considered "too ugly" for regular beauty pageants like Trubbish and Garbodor. I have divided this into different parts. Note: Pretty much every pokemon has an official "contest" breed and official "battle" breed.

First is a list of the top 5 most popular beauty pageant contest pokemon with the three most popular contest breeds of each pokemon.

Pikachu. The three most popular contest breeds are the cosplay breed (obviously), the long tail breed (dedenne father), and the bushy tail breed (pachirisu father)

Eevee and the Eevee-lutions. The most popular contests breeds are the snow coat breed (alolan vulpix or ninetales father), the boots breed (nickit or thievul father), and the blue coat breed (alolan meowth or persian father).

Gardevoir. The three most popular contest breeds are the funeral breed (gothita, gothorita, or gothitelle father), the dolly breed (shuppet or banette father), and the ice cream breed (milcery or alcremie father)

Altaria. The three most popular contest breeds are dancer breed (oricorio father), blood cloud breed (rufflet or braviary father), and the Sylph breed (info can be found here)

Milotic. The three most popular contest breeds are the mosaic breed (Galarian Slowpoke, Slowbro, or Slowking father), tropical breed (horsea, seadra, or kingdra father), and reef breed (johtian corsola father).

Performance contests include using dancing, singing, performing tricks, and other show tasks.

The "battle" contests are very similar to the performance contests just with a focus on using pokemon moves within the performance.

The hitmon line. The three most popular contest breeds are the ethereal breed (ceruledge father), the brawler breed (spinda father), and the kick-box breed (Buneary and Lopunny father).

Metagross. The three most popular contest breeds are the sundance breed (Solrock father), the steampunk breed (klink, klang, or klinkklang father), and the collector breed (klefki father).

Ampharos. The three most popular contest breeds are the sunflower breed (Chikorita, Bayleef, or Meganium father), the forest breed (Turtwig, Grotle, or Torterra father), and the snowglow breed (Alolan Vulpix or Ninetales father).

Porygon2. The three most popular contest breeds are the magnetic breed (Magnemite, Magneton, or Magnezone father), the ringer breed (Bronzor or Bronzong father), and the salt lick breed (Nacli, Naclstack, or Garganacl father).

Aegislash. The three most popular contest breeds are the pixelated breed (Porygon, 2, or Z father), the butter knife breed (Sinistea or Polteageist father), and the bread knife breed (Fidough or Dachsbun father).

Then there are "anti-beauty" pageants that focus on pokemon that are often considered too "ugly" for regular pageants. (this is my personal favorite type of contest)

Garbodor. The three most popular contest breeds are the petrified breed (Glimmet or Glimmora father), the run off breed (Bergmite or Avalugg father), and the recycled breed (Vanillite, Vanillish, or Vanilluxe father).

Muk. The three most popular contest breeds are the haunted breed (Gastly, Haunter, or Gengar father), the lava breed (Slugma or Magcargo father), and the chime breed (Chingling or Chimecho father)

Golbat. The three most popular contest breeds are the heart breed (Woobat or Swoobat father), the wyrm breed (Noibat or Noivern father), and the statue breed (Natu or Xatu father).

Shiinotic. The three most popular contest breeds are the cherry breed (Bounsweet, Steenee, or Tsareena father), the banana breed (tropius father), and the apple breed (Applin, Appletun, or Flapple father).

Grimmsnarl. The three most popular contest breeds are the warlock breed (Hatenna, Hattrem, and Hatterene father), the strawberry breed (Snubbull or Granbull father), and the snaggletooth breed (Mawile father).

The Superior Doll: Barbie vs Bratz

When you think of dolls from childhood, the top two are Barbie and Bratz. There are a few in between like the dolls of Monster High, Polly Pocket, and American Girl, but what makes these two so special? I will compare the two iconic dolls on diversity, authenticity, style, playability, movies, and overall girl power. 

Diversity plays a huge role in whether or not a doll will succeed in today’s age as every little girl needs representation. Let's look at the original Barbie doll, she is white, blonde, thin, and tall, but what if you're short, chubby, black, or Asian? How can you relate to a doll that looks nothing like you? With Barbie rolling out in 1959 and Bratz rolling out in 2001, Millennial and Gen Z girls had opened their eyes to a new form of diversity and inclusion that came with the Bratz brand. Unlike Barbie, the original Bratz doll was a four-package deal. There was Sasha, a black girl, Cloe, a white girl, Jade, an East Asian and white girl, and Yasmin, a Latina and Persian girl. With this blend of almost every race and nationality, there was a little bit of everything for any young girl to relate to. Bratz wins diversity.

The authenticity of these two dolls is so significant to the fans. Barbie has made some changes along the way with Mattel by adding more body types, LGBTQ+ dolls, various culture dolls, and dolls with disabilities. Current Barbie is not as “slay” as she once was as her face looks different with less makeup and not so snatched bone structure, as collectors, fans, and many within the r/Barbie subreddit state. Although Bratz has added a new doll, Raya, to the original fabulous four, Bratz has always remained spunky, fashionable, and multi-ethnic. It seems as though Barbie had to progress and change with the times because of the outrage of concerned mothers worried about the body image portrayal their kids viewed along with the lack of diversity pushed upon children. Mattel has strayed far from what Barbie originally stood for and got lost along the way trying to please everyone, which is impressive loyalty to fans but what Barbie originally stood for has faded. Barbie represented the “perfect” all-American white, skinny, blonde woman proudly, who could be anything and do it all, stemming from the women's rights movement in the 1950s. Bratz wins authenticity as they never had to change to make others feel comfortable.

Barbie has had some iconic looks over the years, such as the Sporty Barbie, Cowgirl Barbie, and the striped swimsuit in her original rollout outfit. As much as Barbie has fashionable classy looks with a retro flair, Bratz takes home the trophy in style, I mean just look at them. The high-heeled boots, the belts, the glitter, sequins and bedazzles, the makeup, the eyelashes, and the layering on the Bratz dolls are top-notch and over the top in all the right ways. Bratz wins style.

What playability means to me is the sets/scenes and the storylines these dolls have. Bratz has had many sets but have any of them stuck? The “Rock Angels” set seems to be the most popular with a movie and soundtrack coming out of it, I remember I had the tour bus, but Barbie’s iconic Barbie dreamhouse trumps all. The Barbie Dreamhouse is the epitome of play to a little girl, you mean she gets an entire four-foot-tall pink dollhouse? Barbie’s iconic Corvette, dreamhouse, friends, pets, sisters, and overall storyline make imagination and play easy. Barbie wins playability. 

Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001) was the first ever Barbie movie. Bratz released their first movie Bratz the Video: Starrin’ and Stylin’ (2004). Since Barbie was already very well known across generations and the globe, their success with the films was greater as they already had a forty-year established brand underhand to the Bratz franchise. Barbie movies have significantly higher ratings, viewership, and cult-like following with their whimsical, fantasy-like movies of the early days. On top of the early films, a critically acclaimed live-action Barbie (2023) movie was released with it being, the most anticipated movie last year with an outstanding cast and director, Barbie wins the movie category.

Mattel’s Barbie is an outstanding brand that has lasted for 65 years whereas Bratz is 23 years old. Bratz has proven itself in the clear categories listed above through the eyes of a young girl with their stylish outfits, diverse cast, and the brand's authenticity. However, Barbie’s playability, longevity, and overall brand power are superior. Barbie pushes the notion that young girls can be whoever they want stamping this with their slogan “You Can Be Anything”, not just style icons and fashionistas as opposed to Bratz with their slogan “Passion for Fashion. This is not a comparison of the two brands but rather a deep dive into what makes both dolls so special to us. What doll is your favorite?

Kenyan police have clashed with anti-tax protesters in the capital, Nairobi, as demonstrations have spread across the country, including to the president’s home town of Eldoret.

Anti-riot police, some on horseback, fired tear gas to disperse crowds of protesters on the streets of Nairobi.

There were similar protests in other cities and major towns across the country - including Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu and Nyeri.

There is a palpable anger among many Kenyans over a controversial finance bill that has introduced a number of unpopular tax proposals.

Despite the complaints, the controversial bill was passed by a majority of MPs during the second reading stage. It will now go on to the next stage where a committee will consider amendments related to the proposed taxes.

As the protests started on Tuesday, the public outcry forced the government to withdraw some of contentious provisions, including a 16% tax on bread and an annual 2.5% tax on vehicles.

But protesters say this is not enough and have demanded that legislators, who are currently debating the bill in parliament, to reject the entire bill.

“I dropped out of college as my parents couldn’t afford my education. I’m hustling to go back and now you want to take the little I make and make me not even buy sanitary pads?” Aristaricus Irolo, 26, told the BBC in the capital, while holding a pad, which is among the items affected by the proposed tax rises.

Fifty-six-year-old Mumbi Muturi said she had come to support her daughter and niece, both 25, who were protesting.

"We [her generation] did not come out to protest when we should have. I am not worried about these ones. They are securing their future. I am here to support them," she said.

Unlike in the past, the current protests are being driven by young people rather than politicians and have mostly been peaceful.

There have been intense rallying calls on social media using the hashtag #OccupyParliament and #RejectFinanceBill2024, urging Kenyans to keep vigil as members of parliament debate the bill.

In Eldoret, the home area of Mr Ruto, hundreds of protesters brought the city to a standstill as they marched through the streets, some waving placards.

There were protests in some other towns across the country – with the anger over additional taxes uniting many Kenyans beyond their ethnicity and party.

In the central town of Nyeri, protesters chanted: "Ruto must go! and "It's all possible without Ruto".

"We are tired," other protesters said in the western town of Kisii.

Since becoming president in 2022, Mr Ruto has introduced several new and unpopular taxes, which critics say stifle economic growth and lead to job losses.

The government has often defended the tax measures as necessary to reduce the country’s national debt of nearly $80bn (£63bn).

On Wednesday the president said protests were a democratic right but maintained that they would not cripple the government's decision-making process.

Lawyers and rights groups have condemned the police for using excessive force against peaceful protesters, with hundreds of people arrested earlier this week.

Rights groups including Amnesty International jointly said on Thursday they had deployed observers nationwide while warning against use of such force.

I've shown this figure a few times now,  and the Instagram algorithm seems to hate it for some reason. Maybe it's those spikes, or his menacing purple lips.

But he's a great figure. Big, colorful, and incredibly well engineered (and well integrated) articulation.

I'd love to see more oversized monster Figuarts from the Dragon Ball line. Actually, one of my dream releases would be Dodoria's partner in space crime - monster form Zarbon.
