so faintly their glow is hardly detectable even to a human eye fully adapted to the dark

a lot of pieces of media will show characters catching fireflies with just their bare hands. in some cases they will just land on the persons fingers. to gently be placed inside of a jar..

for people who live in areas who don’t have fireflies, i want you to know that is not made up or exaggerated for those scenes. fireflies are really like that. they are slow and not cautious at all. while camping i would just walk up to one flying in the air and grab it. and it would sit on my hands like “oh ok.” they are my friends.

You and Jade had set out for a hike much sooner than either of you had ever planned to do together. Of course this was one of the reasons why you liked being with Jade; he was so willing to try new things with you. Even if it meant hiking at two in the morning.

Okay maybe that was a stretch; he probably would’ve preferred to not do that.

In any case, now here you were; in the middle of a clearing, like a fairytale scene you’d read years before. And around you, the small flickering lights of the fireflies came into view.

Jade knew your little trick; how the freckles across your body would glow and become bright as miniature stars.

It was magical; breathtaking even to see. Of all the marvels of land…who would’ve thought that it would’ve been you that captured his attention most of all?

You had once told him that showing someone the patterns was a sign of trust, of utmost commitment to him, which flattered him immensely. How could it not, when he knew of many others who would be ecstatic to see you glow in the night sky?

But you reserved this honor, this sight, for him. Him alone, and in the late hour of the night, with no cares to be had, you felt as though time truly stopped to admire the pair of you.

Your hands in his, the wind whistling a melody, and only the moon as a chaperone, the forest was a song for you.

The fireflies flew close to you, attracted by the patterns on your skin. The reeds made sure to bend out of your way, and the trees gave you the space you needed.

And, the two strangers who should’ve never met, trusting the other with all their heart, alone in the moon filled clearing…
