TPN - Isabella one-shot
Okay, so.. I have so many emotions right now it's not even funny. I don't care how many times I've said this since ch169, but I'm gonna say it again: Isabella is a goddamn QUEEN! I thought the side chapter was going to reflect the light novel like Krone's was last week (it was based on that, correct?), so being able to witness Isabella be that dangerous âiron womanâ mastermind again was simply fantastic.
As Krone's extra chapter reminded us, every woman in this mother/sister academy is fighting to survive by any means necessary, so seeing these ladies put on a pretty face one moment to praise Isabella on her promotion only to talk shit behind her back the next minute was of no surprise to me. What did make me a little stunned was that these women are unmistakably the same women who stood so proud and confidently behind Isabella once she revealed her wonderful revenge plan to the rest of the facility back in ch170.
So, what changed? Oh, it's quite simple and a complete joy for me to talk about, so allow me. Isabella had a reputation of never making mistakes, as she always received perfect scores on both written and physical tests, so upon learning that she allowed 15 children to escape is a bit jarring, especially to the other ladies. The quality of her loss was such a huge hit to the farm's profit that they couldn't fathom why she of all people would be chosen to become the next Grandma. They believed it to be unfair, that Isabella must have had some sort advantage after working under Grandma Sarah that could've been kept under wraps. They both got rid of Krone with little to no explanation at all, so some rules must have been tweaked. It's no doubt the ladies saw Isabella as a major threat to their own survival, so they kept a close eye on her and waited for the perfect opportunity.. to create a fake lead to raise suspicion on this flawless woman.
Too bad dearest Grandma was already ten steps ahead of them! HAA! Did they honestly think they could take her down? And Jessica, sweetheart, you even spoke about Isabella's training days a couple of pages ago and how âshe calmly got revenge on all the girls when they tried to sabotage her.â That literally just happened again so y'all can't really be surprised by this outcome! She knows that Jessica, Sienna, Scarlet & Matilda, are the current top four choices to become mothers, so it was quite easy for Isabella to determine who would go after her and her new position, if anyone were foolish enough to think about such a thing.
Luckily for them, Isabella has no intentions of killing them off. Since they're all quite intelligent and skilled, she decides to recruit them as allies in her pursuit to destroy Grace Field. Their reaction is similar to the other women we see from ch170. Everyone is apprehensive at first, as going against the farm is nothing but a crazy idea, and yet Isabella assures them that there is no bright future if they remain stuck in the system and obey their rules.
They betray each other to give themselves the best chance at surviving, but it'll be an endless hell if you live out your entire life in fear. So if not for each other, what do these ladies have to live for? Oh, just their children they all chose so hard to forget about.
By now it's no secret that Ray is Isabella's son, but ever since ch170 I couldn't help but wonder if any of those women were the biological moms of any of the other kids we know. You can't tell me the lady with that distinguished nose isn't Nat's mother. I also thought the others could be mothers of Rossi, Yvette, Anna and perhaps Don? Sienna might be Emma's, Matilda to Norman's, Scarlet to Phil's, and Jessica.. I'm not sure honestly? I know it could be any of the kids at GF plant #3, not just the 15 that escaped, but it is fun to think about though and I wasn't expecting to learn that their kids were all at the same house.
It's quite convenient that Isabella had the chance to raise their children actually, because after a few more words of encouragement and the knowledge that their children are indeed still alive, the four ladies agree to support Isabella's plan. Well, once she guarantees to not double-cross them, which is reasonable. It's best for them to have some trust in each other in order to work together. Isabella gives them her word and some much better evidence of her mistake in the form of⊠aaaaahhh Ray's note.
Bro, believe me when I was completely shooketh upon reading this. It's been a question we all had for so long that I was fairly certain we weren't going to get an answer for it after the series ended. Of course the knowledge of Ray being Isabella's true son was the weakness many of us thought the note contained, but I could've sworn I read somewhere, in some interview or whatever it was, that Shirai said it was something else Ray baited Krone with (right? or am I completely going crazy about this trivia). Anyways, I guess a farewell note is different enough but damn.. what a punch to my heart. Not only did he address it as âdear mother,â but the fact that Isabella kept it this entire time. Like wow.. I'm kinda speechless here. No doubt she still loves her son, just look at how fondly she holds it! If anything, I must know the full contents of said note! Shirai, please! I'm begging!
And if that wasn't enough to make me emotional, Isabella's wish certainly had me tearing up. I hope she knows that her precious children are all happy together in a free world living the best life they possibly can. Honestly, if I had any power to change just one thing in this series, it would to let Isabella live. Having Emma keep her memories is a close second, but I've come to accept that inconvenience after seeing how happy she and all the other kids are post-series. Look at this precious family! I love them! (also I wanna see that full photo on top with her and ayshe darn it!)
Seriously though, her death is still something I'm not over. I literally have not listened to her lullaby since ch177 dropped because I'm scared I'll become a tearful mess. Yes, sacrificing herself to protect Emma and that other girl from the demon was very admirable of her and helped with her redemption, but she didn't have to die from it! (hell, if emma could survive being stabbed then so could isabella, right?? damn plot armor! ) To me, I just feel like it wasn't necessary, especially now after learning what we just did from this extra chapter. Not only did she agree to become Grandma to help the children when they eventually returned to GF in two years, but Isabella also decreased the number of shipments in order to produce higher quality goods to make up for those that escaped, which is exactly what Emma believed would happen once she decided to leave the kids four and under behind. I love how Isabella adopted Emma's ideals and spirit in order to go against the system and rally everyone else up to accomplish the impossible. Personally, I forgave this woman the moment she retrieved the ropes in ch37 so the farm wouldn't know exactly where the children escaped from. She didn't have to die to prove she was a good mother who cared and love her children, because she showed that several times over and over again. She literally did everything in her power to help these kids secure a brighter future while remaining in the shadows.
Yeah, it makes me happy that they did at least take her body to to the human world so they all can continue to pay their respects to her, but aaahhh.. how I wish she were still alive. She suffered so much, she deserves to live in peace with her children and love them all normally. Ray especially!! You can't just formally introduce these four brilliant women to me and then be like âoh yeah, they have GF kids too and now they're free in the human world with themâ and not have Isabella with Ray! I'm sure their relationship would've been rocky at first, but I still would've love to see them at least give each other a chance to be a real family. Hmmmm.. this chapter, man.. so not good for my heart, but I loved every bit of it. Once again, rest in peace to the iron woman. What a queen.

TPN s02e09
Another week, another episode. So, Iâm kinda conflicted with this one. On one hand it was alright, but on the other it had a lot of issues (one of them being major). But letâs go step by step.Â
1. The first thing that you see: reused scenes. To stay that I was disappointment would be an understatement.Â
2. I donât think Iâve mentioned it before, but I have a lot of issues with anime Norman genocide plan. In the manga, he attacks the capital during the most important holiday. That was he can not only kill a large number of population, but, most importantly, the high nobility. Here he just attacks a random village. How is that helping? What is he achieving? How is that âtoo late to go backâ? I know that you can create more drama with that (they didnât put that child demon for now reason), but why would this âgeniusâ do that. I mean, I understand that itâs because this season is only 11 episodes long and they clearly wanted to cut costs as much as they could... but it just makes no sense.Â
3. Iâve really liked Emma calling Norman an âarogant cowardâ. I donât remember if this line was in the manga, but itâs good regardless.Â
4. You know whatâs also cool? Ray with more lines. Always happy when they do that.Â
5. That scene where Sonju cuts his hand and throws it at the demon? Awful. Itâs been a while since Iâve seen an animation that ugly. You can see how they desperately wanted to cut costs.Â
6. That moment when Barbra had second thoughts about killing the demons - Iâm not sure if I like it. Yeah, they were children and she had that small flashback, but I think it might be slightly out of character. Again, they wanted to show that she is redeemable because apparently you just have to throw children everywhere to add to the drama. Okay, I guess I have more issues with CloverWorks just putting innocent baby demons everywhere to make you feel sad. Itâs cheap, guys. You can do better than that.Â
7. And then the genocide just ends. Just like that... yeah, in the manga it also kinda just ended, but at least we got a resolution - nobles were killed, the capitol was saved, but later guards arrested everybody with cursed blood and executed them. Letâs not forget that Mujika and Sonju were classified as traitors. Here we have one attacked village that was fixed with magic blood. Which further proofs that Normanâs plan made no sense because he literally achieved nothing.Â
8. WOW! Would you look at that, the radio is suddenly useful. Even if the broadcasted announcement is a clear trap. Which kinda makes sense if Isabella is a âdouble agentâ (and I guess she is). But then again, it was better done in the manga because there they go back to Grace Field because Peter kidnapped everybody who stayed in the Paradise Hideout. Here they realised that they SHOULD find usage for that radio.Â
9. And now onto my biggest issue with this episode: old demon being the biggest ex machina of this season... so, 15 years ago he found a dying man. That man JUST SO HAPPENED to have a part for the Minervaâs pen. Inside it JUST SO HAPPENS are included the plans for the high quality farms. BUT WAIT, there is more! Within that data (letâs remind that this data is 15 years old), there is the cure for the lambda disease... 15 YEARS AGO. Wasnât Lambda supposed to be a project that started AFTER Peterâs takeover? HOW IS A CURE THERE? HOW? OH, I KNOW HOW: because you are too scared to kill Norman. Iâve said it man times that CW will not have enough courage to kill him (or leave his future open-ended), so Iâm shouldât be surprised. Iâm just extremely disappointed that itâs an absolute deus ex machina.Â
10. Speaking of Norman, I think he suddenly has longer hair in some of the shots.Â
11. You know what I was very afraid during this entire episode? Shipping. There were moments where I thought that CW was about to give us the ultimate fan service and just jump to the shipping hole. Iâm very happy that they didnât do it and I hope they wonât do it. The last thing that we need is romance.Â
12. Who else thinks that Vincentâs betray is a red-herring? Yeah, I honestly donât believe that they are serious with it. They might be, but if they do: itâs stupid. Okay, on the other hand because itâs stupid, perhaps we should expect that.Â
13. Speaking of Vincent. Did you see how they cut costs by making him to shout with the mask on? Yeah, they clearly didnât want to animate his angry face.Â
14. But the music is still very good.Â
So, uhm, I donât know if I liked this episode or not. It was fun to watch from the beginning to end, the pacing was good, the voice acting was amazing... but it could be better. While I do have strong (or stronger) opinions about the rest of the episodes, this one left me feeling neutral. Even if the old demon ex machina was pretty awful. Well, 2 episodes more to go, letâs see what happens.Â

Hi! I'm a big TPN fan who's dying to read A Letter from Norman. I read your spoiler post about it. As a big Ray fan, what you wrote about him having a crush on a older girl really got me curious. What kind of interest did he have in her? How did he show it? What's their story?! It's hard to imagine since he acts different with only Emma. I'm so itching to get all the juicy details. Maybe even my RayEmma ship will sink, but I don't care! I need to know!! Would you kindly enlighten me? Thanks! QuQ
Thank you so much for trusting me with this ! Sadly, i am far from being unbiased, and that post is kinda old, so I need to rectify something :
No, Ray doesnât have a crush on Susan.Â
Itâs just me and my own weird tastes in ships (I also like to see them as being actual siblings). But he indeed treated her differently from other children at the orphanage, mostly because SHE was treating him differentely as well. Iâll try to summarize, while giving as much detail as possible, the chapter.
(Itâs a detailed summary of it, so very long)
The beginning of the chapter starts with Norman talking about Ray for 4 pages (without mentioning Emma individually, take it as you will), he explains that he has never seen Rayâs tears in his entire life, but thinks that he may have seen him cry once. And he then goes on to explain in which circumstances it was. (The flash-backs part arenât from Normanâs point of view, but from an omniscient narrator.)
It starts some time after Emmaâs 9th birthday and the shipment of one of their younger sibling (called Jimmy but this is irrelevant). Most children go on with their life, looked after by their eldest sibling, Susan, the only one of her age left at the house. After proposing a game of hide-and-seek, she convinces Ray (with the help of Emma) to come and play with them instead of sulking in his corner. She tells Ray that she knows he is sad, and wants him to get better, to Rayâs annoyance, since he expected Jimmy to be shipped anyway. (She ruffles his hair by the way, he probably took that habit from her).
During the game, they explain that Susan is their elder, and the smartest in the house, even giving Norman a hard time during tag, so if they want to win they have to do better than follow Rayâs laziness. She is extremely attentive, noticing any changes in her siblings. Even Ray, who thinks he has mastered his poker face, couldnât tell if she noticed those within him, as each time a sibling leaves she comes to him and forces him to play with them to lift his spirit. Ray observed her enough to know she didnât discover the truth, and finds her pity towards him annoying. (And we all know Ray is a tsundere)
When he is about to give up on finding a better hiding spot, Ray finds a wounded bird. Emma suggests they take care of it, but Norman and Ray explains that if they were to touch the bird, then its family would never come to get him back again. Since the birdsâs mother donât seem to come, and Emma starts to feel sorry for the bird (being an orphan herself). She wants to take him home.
Ray scolds her, asking if she really thinks it would be happy in a cage, and that maybe it was the birdâs destiny to die here. To which Emma replies that maybe it was Rayâs fate to meet that bird and he shouldnât leave it here. Emma wins the argument thanks to Norman, and they catch the bird. Susan joins them, and after getting Isabellaâs approval, their older sister tells that the three of them are the one who will take care of the bird, to Rayâs annoyance again.
Norman names it Ner, and they get a cage with a little sign with its name written on it. The bird is a robin. To feed Ner, Emma goes to search for worms, and brings back a ton, making Susan squeal in disgust and hides behind Ray, only trusting him to protect her from them.
As time pass, the robin gets better, and everyone got attached to it. Then, Isabella announces to Ray that she received a sudden call from the center, asking for an extra shipment this month, and this shipment is Susan. (it mentions that it was very sudden, and considering the time... itâs most likely for the Tifari). Isabella asks Ray if he expected her to live until her 12th birthday, he doesnât reply to that, but itâs what he thought. She then asks him to look after Susan to make sure she doesnât escape.Â
Ray suddenly realizes how much he would miss her if she leaves, how no one would speak to him like she does... No one would comfort him like she does. Of course he cares about Emma and Norman, but Susan was the only one capable of seeing those changes he couldnât even notice himself. Her stubborness âsaved himâ (I quote). He considers finding a replacement to Susan, but knows it would mean sacrifying Emma or Norman. There is nothing to do about it, and he knows he canât save everyone. He considers making his plan earlier, but itâs not ready to do so yet.
As he walks into the corridor, he wakes Ner up, who thinks the boy is here to bring him food. Ray mocks the bird for trusting him so much, and for being dependant of humans, comfortably locked in its cage. (You know what parralels he makes here, I hope I donât have to explain) As Ray tries to free the bird and opens the cageâs door, Susan spots him and starts to scold him. Telling him that everyone takes good care of the bird, and he shouldnât let it escape. (french translation here, idk about how it is in japanese)
It only reminds him of how she is going to die. Susan scolds him each time he is too harsh or refuses to play with the other kids, he thinks for a moment that a real sister, linked by blood to him, would have done that.
âI donât think... It is happy to live in this cage...â He blurts out, almost revealing the truth. Did I just gave a link to my own art? Yes. And then ran away to his bedroom, leaving Susan confused.
The next day Isabellaâs announces Susanâs âadoptionâ. While everyone congratulates her, Ray has been avoiding her during the whole day, even skipping his duties to the bird. Susan talked to Emma and Norman about what happened the night before, but they were as confused as her. She starts to doubt her own conviction and if keeping the bird is truly a good idea. She admits that she finds Ray always sad whenever one of their siblings leave, to which Emma replies what everyone had seen of him until now :
âBut... Ray is never happy...â
No one had noticed Rayâs feelings. Everyone believed that he was just always like that, and even the idea of a Ray walking around smiling happily disturbs the red head. Susan dismisses it, and tells that Ray would be happier anyway without her, since she was annoying him so much. Emma and Norman reassures her, and tell her that she will be very missed. Susan thinks about those threeâs friendship, envying it over her own loneliness as the last of their older siblings and without any news of how they are. But also happy they can count on each other, if one of them gets separated from the others, she was sure they would find each other again.Â
The day of her depart, a sudden wave of nostalgia hits her as she walks through the hallway of the house, she looks at the bird, its cardboard with the initial of her three favorite people written on it. When she bumps into Ray, while he looks at her sullen (making her even sadder), she asks him if she can take Ner with her. Saying that since Ray doesnât seem to like the bird, it would be fine if she kept it. Before Ray could reply, Isabella agrees. But the boy knows that if she takes the bird with her, itâs most likely to end up just like she will.
While the kids are sad to see both their older sister and the bird leave, most are okay with it. But Ray raises his voice to refuse. And despite Isabellaâs stare, he insists on keeping Ner. Susan snaps and yell at Ray, asking him why he is acting like this and what he wants. She continues by saying that if she lets the bird here, Ray would try to free it again, denouncing him in front of everyone.
Ray seems taken aback as the other children looks at him. But Susan doesnât want to back down. She wants the bird with her, she had hoped it would solve everyoneâs problem, and especially Rayâs one with the bird... Seeing him refuse was beyong her comprehension. Ray stops himself, before itâs too late, from telling her that if she takes the bird with her, they will both die. He yells back at her that in the end, sheâll just do whatever she wants to and take the bird with him, whether he wants it or not, and then finishs preparing the table for breakfast.
The other kids are angry at him for ruining their last breakfast with Susan, and trying to free Ner. But Emma and Norman notices that thereâs something wrong with him, he seems to react too strongly when it comes to the robin. Emma proposes to Norman to prepare a gift for Susan, to leave a memento of them to her. The boy, immediately understanding her intention, agrees. Despite Susan being able to see the changes in Ray more easily, they were the ones who understood him the best after all.Â
Ray stays in the library during that time, thinking about solutions to save the bird, but Susan always stays near the cage, so Ray would not free it. No matter what possibilities come to his mind, Ray always come to same conclusion : it will be killed. He concludes that Isabella is testing his loyalty by checking how far he would go to save his sister and the bird, or if he would only save one of them. He doesnât even know why he is so bothered by that bird, thinking that he just has to let it be killed like he had let all his other siblings die until now. Even if he canât save Susan, he desesperately wants to save the bird... yet Susan doesnât let him. (Do I really need to point out the metaphor again?)
As Susan is changing into her new uniform, Emma takes the cage, pretexting that she is going to clean it up one last time before she leaves. While Susan shows her clothes proudly to her mother, Ray comes and tells her that she can take the bird with her in the end, as well as to apologize for his behavior earlier. He looks like he is making amends for his actions, in the most natural way possible, and yet Susan sees that something is not going right. But she canât ask what it is as she is overflowed by gifts from her younger siblings.
When she is about to get the cage back, Emma and Norman ran up to her, and apologize. They let the bird fly away. Everyone is shocked, and despite that Susan let a sad smile form on her lips.Â
âI see... But if it managed to fly, then it means that it got better.â
Then Emma gives to Susan a bracelet with one of Nerâs feathers attached to it. (The one that naturally falls donât think they took it directly from the bird). She shows to her similar bracelets to the one she is giving on her wrist and Normanâs one, and pulls Ray closer to she can attach one last bracelet to his wrist. She tells Susan that like that, they are still together even if she leaves.
Susan bursts into tears, thankful for the gift. And apologize for yelling at Ray in front of everyone, recognizing that it was selfish of her to want to keep Ner to herself because she was sad of leaving Grace Field alone. She explains to him that because the bird was named after them, she wanted it to keep them close to her, just like how Ray perceived himself in the bird, she saw them in it as well.
Before leaving one last time, she pats Rayâs head (he definitely took this habit from her) and asks him to never stay alone again. She ruffles his hair, as he voice breaks when he nods. He apologizes to her one last time, so quietly that only her, Emma and Norman can hear him. Either for being angry at her... or for being unable to save her. (itâs left to interpretation) She leaves with a smile on her face.
When Ray is alone with Norman and Emma, he asks them what they did with the bird. Norman replies without any hesitation that it seemed to be important to Ray, so they deliberately freed it. Emma follows up by telling him that she thought thoroughly about what he told her about the bird being unhappy in its cage, and she concluded that she wouldnât a life like that either, dying alone in a cage. Even if she was protected and feed, if she was a bird, she would still prefer flying in the sky.
Ray knew at that moment that whatever may happen, Emma and Norman would choose to fly free. He is glad that he has them. He thanks them for doing it, Norman replies that when he is ready, Ray can tell them why he wanted to free the bird. Emma smiles and asks him to, play with them tomorrow. Susan is not here to drag him into their games after all. Ray misses her, but thinks that with Emma and Norman by his side, everything will be alright.
Then we end the flash back and go back to Normanâs narration but I wonât extend myself on it, this ask was about Susan.Â
In conclusion: their relationship is the one of âblood-relatedâ siblings, in the sense that they find each other annoying and yet stays close and attached to one another. But no matter how close Susan was of Ray, his closest friends are still Emma and Norman.Â
Itâs a very beautiful chapter, and I love it. I hope you found some kind of answer in this very long post ! As for me, I prefer to leave it at that, so everyone can have their own interpretations of Rayâs and Susanâs relationship.
But to be honest thereâs only like... two Noremmaâs moment in this whole book, and the rest of the time itâs Norman thinking about Ray. And since you are a Rayemma shipper, thereâs an entire chapter where Emma and Ray shares one braincell and are cute.

Actually, the ends werenât that bad (a TPN/TOA essay)
So.
There are two series that ended recently and which had a lot of impact for me but also a very controversial end, like there are some wars between fans who argue about if the end was good⊠or not.
And me ? I really want to believe that The Promised Neverland (the manga, obviously) and Trollhunters have very coherent ends.
Youâre probably wondering « why putting these two together ? » and I have a reason, multiple reasons actually. Of course, there will be spoilers of The Promised Neverland and the entire Tales of Arcadia saga (Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards and the movie Rise of the Titans).
First, Promised Neverland.Â
And mostly the character who made a lot of people cringe even before the last book : Emma. Cringe because, for some fans, she isnât someone you can relate with because she isnât realistic⊠in every sense of the word.
She is too perfect or at least too perfectly programmed for the plot whisky is not entirely true ! « She is too kind ! » well⊠maybe not ? I donât think all her actions were driven by kindness.Â
She is too clever to be the naive kind of kind.Â
And donât tell me that if she was that clever, she would have noticed that her orphanage was a farm because⊠she probably was in denial. Also, how would she imagine that monsters were waiting for them outside ? Maybe she didnât see, maybe she didnât want to see. But anyway, when she discovered the truth, her first thought was to get everyone out. EVERYONE.
Of course, there are her family, she wonât let them⊠but she did have to let some of them because it would have been too complicated, so that prove that she isnât just a naive idealistic.
She wanted to fight, first for her family, then for every kid of every farm, because that wouldnât be fair if her kids stayed alive and not the others. Then she also want to save every monsters, because that wouldnât be fair since they didnât choose to have to eat meat.
This is not about being kind, this is about being fair. This is about responsibility and guilt.
Emma doesnât want to save everyone because everyone deserve to be saved or something cute like that, she would have killed less people or monsters otherwise.
She wants to save everyone because she doesnât want to feel as bad as the people, as the monsters who hurt her and her family. She doesnât want to be a monster.
When she understood, and ONLY WHEN she understood what it means to hunt, she realized how thin was the line between her enemy and herself so she doesnât want to live knowing people lived horribly because of her.Â
She didnât want to live with that on her conscience.
And⊠I think this is kind of selfish ? She doesnât do that because itâs right, she does that because she wants to be better⊠I donât know. She took a lot of risks, for her and for a friends just so she wonât feel that guilt.
But the others donât care that the mutants die, only Emma who is really clever like I said before understood and was like « yeah so no we need to find a solution or it will haunt me for the rest of my life ». This is more like a perfectionist thing that a kind thing.
Which is⊠logical for a character like Emma.
Really the characters in the manga are very well-written, especially Isabella who has such a dignified way to die. It was a good end for her, very symbolic, even if Iâm very sad about it. When she betrayed the blond guy, I was pleasantly surprised but at the same time it made sense like, itâs very consistent, everything is consistent even if we started with a complex project. Ending the meat industry ? Save all the children ? And Isabellaâs end shows how the real villain of the story are the one who benefit from the system (which says a lot about our own society).
But Emma, actually, became « queen » of the system when she made the new treaty, she literally created a new system so⊠welcome responsibilities while she was only 14. Will she benefit too ? Or even take advantage ? But how could she after everything she learnt, and mostly after so many people sacrificed their lives so she could reach her goal ? Did she deserve it ?
How could she live with that on her conscience ?
The answer is : she canât. She isnât that strong. She isnât that positive. She isnât that perfect.
And destiny (haha) gave her a solution on a silver plate. Not by surprise like a Deus Ex Machina since we knew there would be a counterparty which wonât be too violent because Emma cleared the path. This was an equivalent exchange. THIS IS LIKE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST ! (By the way, why does everyone think TPNâs end was too easy while in FMA, the best manga of all time, the solution to get Alphonseâs body back was in Edâs hands⊠LITERALLY !).
Anyway.
The demon offered to lose her memory, thinking she would refuse because she would be alone, separated from her family which is⊠euh⊠stupid⊠I mean⊠have you seen Your Name ?
People who are meant to be together will find each other.
Moreover, Emma was so relieved because it was solving all her problems : nobody dies, everybody goes to the other world, nobody sacrifices themselves, and the guilt she was afraid to live with ? Gone. I think Emma was also relieved to be like « yes, I have a second chance, now I will live a normal life ». And it was selfish because it seemed like she said « so guys I will send you to another universe I know nothing about after I brought you into this mess but now you will deal with it yourself everyone ! ». That was⊠a little cowardly ?
And the worst was that every encounter she made, every lesson she learnt, she lost themâŠ
Well, thinking about thatâŠ
TROLLHUNTERS !
Trollhunterâs end was⊠hard. And gave me a bitter sensation since not only we said goodbye to our favorite characters but we also genuinely said goodbye to the show. Even if we wanted to watch the show a second time, it was kinda deleted (along with Anton Yelchin actingâŠ) ?Â
Yes, itâs hard⊠but isnât it ballsy to do a scenario like this ? And we could have expected this, itâs not the first time we talked about time travel in this saga. And for gods sake at the very beginning of the movie there were a lot of things that shouldnât happen. The trainâs crash in New York, the Titans probably crushing people, the bridge being destroyed, and all that jazz⊠Can you imagine how Jim should have lived with all of this besides everything else he had lost ? And then, Toby died (which affected me more than I imagined).
But itâs not Tobyâs death that made Jim want to change everything, it was just the last straw. The last thing that wasnât supposed to happen. After all, if it was written that Jim was given another chance, if Naru saw that Jim would have to get back, to go aaaaall the way back, there must have a reason, or multiple reasons. Do you think humans could live normally after everything that happened ? Do you think humans and trolls could coexist ? Iâm not sure, not after that kind of damage. And Arcadia was destroyed ! The HeartStone, the center of the universe, was destroyed too ! I think even if Toby survived, the end wasnât that brightâŠ
And the time-travel wasnât a Deus Ex Machina either because otherwise it would have been a « and then BOUM everything is back to normal and everything is ok » situation, which isnâtâŠÂ
We donât know what will happen.Â
Jim will do everything so itâll be okay but maybe he will make some mistakes. Vendel may not survive, maybe they will take more time to kill Gunmar, Aaaaaargh may be turn to stone again⊠we donât know. And I think everyone in the fandom is pissed because of that. Because we donât know. And I do understand : this is not the end, not a conclusion, not a great finale, more like the beginning of something we wonât get to see (like a legacy?), which is both great and very very sad for us. I hope Dreamworks will do comics or booksâŠ
But also, I doesnât mean that nothing will be like before. There is a lot of things Jim has no control of. For example, what happened to the extraterrestrials, Jim knew nothing about it so he canât change a thing. And for the wizards too. And when you think about it, what happens in « Wizards » has to happen. Jim wonât be a troll during that arc but it will happen anyway, itâs supposed to happen because itâs the creation of the Trollhunter, the creation of the Amulet ! And Jim has no idea of what will become because he wasnât really there.
What is supposed to happen will happen.
Friendship or love, it will happen. Even the relationship between Jim and Blinky, even if Jim isnât the Trollhunter. OH, SPEAKING OF WHICH.
Choosing Toby as the new Trollhunter is a super idea. Toby will accept his role right away. Toby will love his new destiny. And since he will have Jimâs help, he will be okay. Jim doesnât want his friends to get traumatized again (I mean itâs cool to learn stuff but do you really need to suffer for that?)(IâM LOOKING AT YOU AGAIN, EDWARD ELRIC), so he will do what he can so things donât get too heavy. And you know, maybe he want (AND DESERVE) to give a bit away. He probably give the Amulet to Toby because he knew Toby is brave enough to fight even without powers⊠and because he was tired to bear the Amulet ? Anyway, like I said, everything that is supposed to happen will happen and if Toby isnât the right Trollhunter, the Amulet wonât choose him.
AH ! And donât forget that Jim doesnât need the Amulet to be a Trollhunter ! This is literally what the show wanted to teach us, guys ! If you forget it, it proves that itâs not only the characters who had a resetâŠ
A resetâŠ
Holy guacamole this is exactly like Undertale. This is Undertaleâs principle. Jim is Frisk who after taking a Neutral Route wants to do a True Pacifist Route ! This is so cooooool !
Except that, exactly like in The Promised Neverland finale (well, not exactly but like a reversed version of it), Jim decides that everyone forgets everything that happened and take the guilt off their shoulders, as heavy as an armor. He erased everyoneâs guilt, except his. That is far from being selfish or cowardly.
Itâs the opposite ! These two shows which donât have a lot in common have finales being negative pictures !
And Jimâs end isnât perfect either because he still has the world on his shoulders (a little less because he isnât the Bearer of the Amulet, but still a little more because he knows what happens if it goes wrong).Â
He is still the Young Atlas because even if the characters in the shows wonât live the same thing, they will still be the characters we knew, the characters we saw growing, the characters as brave and as strong as we used to see : like in Undertale, « despite everything, itâs still you ».
And to everyone who says to me « yeah but it will go wrong because when Merlin shows Jim the future where he isnât the Trollhunter, it was shit », well : NO.
Jim stays a Trollhunter, he said so ! And I mostly think (since the moment I saw this episode) this all thing was an illusion, not a real future, because Merlin is a real piece of garbage and I was only sad for Douxie when Merlin died (otherwise, I would have celebrate it). And I think Jim knows it too, that it wasnât real.
By the way, I hope they will find another way to not say « For the glory of Merlin » anymore, I loved the new version of the Amulet in the movie (AND JIM LOVED IT TOO).
All of this just to say that : these endings, even if itâs very frustrating, make sense.
Of course, saying goodbye to so many things I cared about for years make it difficult to assimilate it, but that also means that I really loved it.
And in the end, it showed these two characters flaws, these perfect, pure, way-too-nice characters with too many responsibilities and a huge desire to survive, but who are being selfish for once by taking a clean start.
But theyâre doing it with their pockets full of determination⊠proving how humans they are.
And I really will miss them.
Ready ? Set ? Go !

Making peace with TPN S02E04 (anime-only)
Post summary: my problems with the episode, possible explanations for why and how to minimize the problems. also some speculation.
The thoughts are mostly based on the anime in a bubble, aside from the segments where I mention otherwise.
.
#0 - My mixed feelings about staying anime-only
This is strange, because... Iâm not really hype for next week? I want more, but not in the same excited way I did before. Because I simply donât know what to expect anymore.
I want to stick as an anime-only so I can deliver stand-alone thoughts as this... clunky and stumbling adaptation makes its way towards the finish line (obviously it wonât be done this season but, yeah ---- i mean, hopefully not, who knows what theyâll do at this point).
But another part of me is just... more excited to read the manga to see what it is like and what the differences are, after the anime is done (which was always my plan, but I was never really actively excited about it pff-). And I feel like your anime approach has failed when Iâm moreso looking forward to reading the source material eventually. I do hope that with ep5 theyâll get back on track and this feeling will fade. That they have a meaningful plan and reason for why ep4 felt so messy and disjointed - a reason why it had to go this way, because I feel like they just wanted them out of the bunker, but this is not the way imo (more on that in the next segment)
.
#1 - Leaving the bunker - mix of feeling ârushedâ and âwaste of timeâ
I feel like where the anime is going, they kind of wrote themselves into a corner in Episode 4. The story setup was leading them to this place (i.e. the bunker), but they obviously didnât want them to stay there long.
What is the problem? / The way it was setup, we got about an episode of them being there (too few to have emotional attachment to the place) and then being chased out when things went well. In a way it is both too soon, but since nothing really worth the ~1 episode âfluffâ happened there in the end, it feels pointless or as if we just wasted time, just for them to leave in the end.
Imo, the bunker is needed for two things, 1) being the first goal for them to go to, so the story isnât aimless right away and 2) info dumps. Most of the childrenâs content can be repurposed during their forest time or doesnât seem relevant right now.
For the record, I personally think that they got found out makes sense in-universe,
WM said he was found out, itâs not unlikely the farm knows that bunkers exist and might even have a vague idea of where they are
that there are multiple could be assumed by the army guy saying, âThatâs how shelters usually areâ -- If the world has been like this for 1000 years, what other purpose than human survival in a demon would could shelter even have?Â
I donât think the pursuers communicated it back (got lucky, Ray) because if they did, they wouldnât show up a whole month later.
they could have just observed them, theyâve been on the surface quite a bit.
(though I also agree it should be confirmed how the farm found out)
Iâm just questioning the impact it had on me as a viewer (which is little) - the world is rigged against them, they canât catch a break in a system this powerful chasing them and I think part of the confusion and âwait weâre back at square 1??â (literally) is intentional, to evoke the feeling of something being lost. If possible, I would keep the spirit of this idea (see âitâs a trapâ in the next segment)
.
So what can we do to fix it?
Skipping the bunker / I donât think we can remove the bunker outright. I suppose they could have had them just go straight for the new location by having the last keyword be another puzzle instead of the phone recording giving it away directly. But that might have too few things happening. That way they also would have gotten more time on their own to be wandering OR Mujika and Sonju might have been with them longer (which would honestly make sense from a meta point, too. I feel like they were a little short-lived.)
Less time in the bunker / if it feels pointless anyway, get it over with quickly
More time in the bunker / stay longer and have them do something else. Maybe they prepped to already go back to GF, time has passed and then they get raided. Problem: why did it take the farm force so long?
To be honest, Iâm not sure that would have been much better so Iâm personally more inclined to fix it with a very tightly connected problem, which will be the next segment:
.
#3 - the HELP wall scare was pointless
Whatâs the problem? / the scare was used in between two segments of âthe happy life in the bunkerâ(TM). The segments are the exact same feeling to me personally, just fluff. The scare changed NOTHING. Nothing that was revealed justifies it existing.
Pre wall scare: WM is an ally, the bunker is for escapees
Post wall scare: WM is an ally, he got discovered, the bunker is for escapees, there were escapees there before (?)
The wall doesnât even have anything to do with WM. And we didnât get enough details on the HELP wall, even on its own. Was the book and the âHELPâs from the same person? Why were they going crazy there? What did their siblings die from? It canât be food, so it must have happened outside. Where they picked up by the Task Force(TM)?
The âdonât give upâ is nice, but our crew didnât need that pep talk I think - i guess with Minerva gone, they lost a hope for allies, but at the same time he gave them coordinates where to get support. If they didnât get that and now were on their own, Iâd get the whole uplifting book more, personally. I guess the tragedy here is that WM is dead? Maybe Iâm not emphasizing with the characters enough on this.
. So what can we do to fix it?
Give more details to the wall / i.e. answering the questions posed above. Maybe show more of the diary. Maybe two were left and one killed themselves (they scribbled HELPs and were crazier) and left the other alone, and they decided theyâre leaving for the human world. It doesnât change that the scare doesnât mean much, but it would at least be a little more personal.
Change the wall / remove the helps, leave the names and the counting. It would be a tragic reveal (instead of a over-dramatic scare) to see that people had died (around) here, making them scared for their own lives (I guess thatâs kind of implied to be happening but since it doesnât linger, I didnât really notice.)
Itâs a trap/they definitely know of the bunker / itâs not âhelpâ but ârunâ which was a warning someone put there because they figured out the farms knew of the bunker (or they got attacked and one couldnât leave). It being a trap would make sense because even as itâs now, Iâm just assuming they vaguely know of the bunkersâ existence anyway. Then it wouldnât be âyay bunker life! - scare - yay bunker life! - BOOMâ but instead âyay bunker life! - itâs a trap... what do we do?â - you can still have the info dumps & the phone call and then they either realize itâs a trap and just leave (removing the problem of the....... interesting raid scenes), and BOOM (haha) youâre where the anime is now, since the troup got nomâed anyway and arenât a threat anymore. The mission would still fail since theyâre gone, so Isabellaâs plot is in tact too. I think this would also partly solve the bunker problem, because now something actually changed about the setup we know. Itâs NOT the safe bunker anymore. It changes a lot about the world too - the farm knows of them so how much more of the WM support net is affected? It makes you think more about the larger scale implications (and ligns up nicely with the âI was discoveredâ talk from James, therefore making the wall shown at the same time relevant), + the bunker has another reason to be there, to reveal that. Personally, it would change our perception and understanding of the situation, which imo would make up for the lacking investment in the bunker itself. It would also prompt them to leave faster (likely), thus eliminating the âwe spent so much time here for nothingâ thing. If you really want to you can even have them stay anyway, since itâs the only thing they have and they opt to just leave on the first sign of someone actually being on their back. This requires a better night watch than Don though :D
.
#4 - The little things
Missed drama - the episode was pretty casual about a lot of things; testing potentially dangerous food (fair because it was a nice segment), their new home being gone (fair because no attachment) and them seeing humans being eaten right in front of them (WHY WASNâT THIS MILKED). It makes it all seem like itâs not a big deal - which I guess in a survival story, it kind of isnât. But I still feel like there wasnât really any impactful moment this episode it just kinda went âbrrrâ and now weâre back to episode 1.
for real, please milk the wild demon eating people / he just kinda goes "nom" and the children are there and run. It feels like the anime itself barely takes it seriously - it's the first time (I think), they see a human get eaten by a demon and I feel like that could have used like a close up shot, and some more disgusted reactions by the children. I get that it's a world where that just happens but I feel like the anime just didn't take or see the change to do something more personal with it. I like it as an element at its core because it makes sense; they shot around, attracting the demon and I also like the irony of being saved by a wild creature. Even if that now chases you.
incompetent soldiers - why do they have guns? they canât HARM / KILL the quality food, so WHY GUNS? -- People with guns are usually incompetent in anything because they just canât hit anything, but that at least makes sense here. Still, what was the plan? Sheer intimidation? Theyâre the farmsâ force right? Why donât they know how to deal with wild demons? Possible answer: to prevent humans with guns knowing how to eliminate their higher ups :D doesnât change that it makes them look stupid. Bro really got defeated by getting a cup thrown in his face. To be fair this specific one didnât seem to be the brightest bulb, why the âhuh?â when he found Don??? Is this relevant IâM SO CONFUSED.
whereâs the character moments? - when they got to the bunker, everyone else kind of got the focus, and the main cast just didn't have any of those character moments anymore that made the previous episodes, especially episode 2, so touching and emotional for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the kind of fluff content with the children a lot but I kind of missed some.... it feels like it's more event driven (#BOOM) than character driven now, and idk how to really attach to that? Especially since with ep4 we didn't even really learn anything new (aside from a name and that he was indeed good and is now dead I guess).
.
#5 - Why?
Warning: this goes a bit into comparisons (nothing concrete though), and I obviously donât know more than I picked up from fandom reactions.
My guess is that
âSo... I cannot at this point say that we are going to animate the entire story to the very end. We are not at a point where we can say that. Sorry. (Laughs)â
from the MAL interview might be a factor. It seems they wanted to tell their own spin regardless (which I personally respect) but maybe they thought that unless they had a two-cour, it would be hard to keep up the investment the first season set up with what was originally in the manga (I had heard that it would be a weird pacing to do 11 episodes and maybe they wanted to make sure viewer engagement was high).
> âWe know that there are viewers who, after they watch the anime, want to continue on and read the manga, and there are viewers who have read the manga first and are now watching the anime.â
(Iâm not sure if âafter the animeâ means after a season or after the the whole adaptation)
Their goal is definitely an âuniqueâ experience. And they seem to at least be aware that some people watch the anime first, so it has to make sense in a bubble.
I canât say if I would have preferred a slower start into whatever the manga has that caps off at 11 episodes (idk how much rewarding stuff could have fit in there), since they probably fear of not being able to do a complete adaptation too. And I feel like as Iâm getting it, they are trying to quickly reintroduce what people cared about in s1 --- in Isabellaâs case, maybe a bit too early. there was barely any time to really miss her imo.
But Iâm also not sure if whatever theyâre aiming for will be rewarding. I hope so, because I donât want their efforts to go to waste. And I donât want to come to dislike it.
I can admit faults, ep4 is definitely a lowpoint even without knowing the alternatives. Just that for me, it is annoying little things and not the shocking deviations from the manga.
.
#6 - Hope
I have hope though because Isabellaâs stuff was good, and now that theyâre over the no-return divergence point, they might be able to... (meta spoiler) not repurpose manga scenes without any buildup (is what Iâm getting) anymore :âD, because they really only set themselves up for disappointed with that. It might seem like a homage but itâs moreso out of place, the people who read it arenât happy because you didnât earn it (and of course theyâll compare) and the anime suffers from it because it can create unnecessary confusion forced in just to make a reference.
Ironically I think theyâre too stuck in the manga too and could have benefited from a blind perspective.
I donât really mind anything overall I think (world is against them, thatâs fair, being out on the run again is fine, the demon ârescueâ is fine), the execution / some details of episode 4 were just... strange. idk where they are going with it and maybe that really was the best way to transition but until I know where it goes, I canât really judge that. Highly doubt it though.
I really hope they completely just do their own things now with some base elements from the manga.
.
A lot of what I talked about in this post ended up making me appreciate the crumbs of intention. The realization that previous escapees didnât make it (not all of them, anyway) and WM being dead, and then having that uplifting message. The message of âyou donât get to rest, youâre on your own againâ. The irony of the wild demon being their (temporary) rescue. The past escapees.
Ironically, I wanted to dunk on the anime but really, all I feel is more content now. Would I have preferred some fixes? Yes, but I see some semblance of meaning in it even with the errors.
Thanks for reading this goddamn essay.

A Letter from Norman reactions
Tonight I was feeling like reorganizing the notes I took after reading the novel for the first time. Just some random personal reactions I had after reading it; if anything catches your attention and you'd like to know more about a particular event from the novel, please feel free to ask and I'll be happy to help!!!
Under the cut because it's l o n g. That is, if Tumblr allows me to add a "read more", which has never happened before, but I'll keep hoping in it.
âą Disclaimer: I'm suing anyone who ever said that the novel is all about NorEmma. I've literally put off reading it because I didn't want to get into something overly romantic while there's??? Nearly nothing about it that is romantic??????? Just a slight mention in that last chapter and that's it???????? Why are y'all like this
Prologue
âą I need you all to know that the important letterâą through which Norman informed Emma about his plan starts with him describing the weather. I just think it's a relevant information.
âą Ok I'm at freaking page 1 of âA letter from Normanâ and. NORMAN IT'S A FREAKING LETTER TO EMMA NOT A SHAKESPEAREAN PLAY THERE'S LITERALLY NO REASON TO BE THIS POETIC
Maybe, I would get it if it was directed to Ray, but to Emma?????
Chapter 1
âą Emma in 2038: Let's befriend ghosts
Emma in 2047: let's befriend demons
Seems like a logic consecution to me
âą Ok but why has nobody ever mentioned the extremely precious Emma / Gilda moments in the novel???? My heart was completely melting that was the most adorable thing I've ever read??????
âą The way Norman is constantly in awe of Ray is so adorable... Baby is so sweet I swear, he deserves the world
Chapter 2
âą OK BUT THE SWEET EXCHANGE between Ray and Isabella before him and Emma go out at night?????? Ray is so pure is swear... He's a precious baby who didn't deserve all the shit he went through.
Reporting it in case anyone's curious; for context, Norman is sick, and Emma wants to go out look for a flower that she's read is going to help him feel better. Emma and Ray are convinced that Norman is going to die because babies are just that dramatic, and easily impressionable as well. They're seven here.
â «Ray, I'm counting on you!»
Isabella pressed an hand on the boy's shoulder, who turned his face to her and diligently nodded, before continuing: «Differently from Emma, I don't think the flower is going to help Norman heal».
«What do you mean?»
«However, it's better than having to sit back and watch without doing anything. I too, like her, want him to heal as soon as possible.»
«Sure, I understand...» â
NOW that hits so hard. You have to understand, this is after Ray had made the deal with Isabella. He had already started to plan the escape. In this occasion, he was on a very thin line: alone at night with Emma, outside the House, a child who knew the truth. Isabella knew those were the right conditions for him to attempt an escape, so she decided to test his loyalty; one misstep, and their deal - which was fundamental for the escape Ray was planning - would have ended.
But at the same time, Ray needed to go. Because, just like Emma, he just couldn't stand to lose Norman. And to see these three children caring so deeply about each other even at such a young age makes me honestly bawl. This is quite certainly my favorite thing from this series. And Ray deserves the world.
âą Ray was so determined to save his two friends, he even considered for a moment, in the woods, to tell Emma the truth about the orphanage. I find it very nice how the novel hinted of all these times Ray almost revealed the truth, it really puts emphasis on how he was trying to find the best moment for the escape- but it also hints to how desperate he was to share this grievous burden he was forced to carry for the longest time.
âą â Ray, you must keep on living, Norman whispered to himself like a prayer. â
I'm... I'M đ„șđ„șđ„șđ„șđ„ș
Doesn't help the fact that this bit was literally at the end of pages of Norman praising Ray and how brave he had been for so long.
âą â Nobody in the House would have wanted for Ray to pay with his life to amend the silence of all those years. â
I love this bit. Nobody between the children ever hated Ray for speechlessly assisting to dozens of his siblings being lead to death, because they all immediately understood how much he was suffering, how powerless he must had felt, and also, even though it only led to him being even more hurt, how deeply he loved them all. It's really nice to realize that no children ever hated Ray- no one besides from himself. His siblings love him unconditionally, and that's precisely what he deserves đ€§đ€§đđđ
âą Norman: *adventures in a detailed description of Ray's features and gestures for no other apparent reason than the fact that he finds him pretty*
Chapter 3
âą Ok I know people use to see Ray and Susan's interactions under the light of Ray having a crush on her but honestly? I think they make the cutest brotp. I never knew how much I needed Ray-having-an-older-sister content untill now.
âą For real though!! What hits you really hard is to find out, even though he would had never ever showed it, how desperate he was to have somebody care about him, and to be loved. He literally grieves for losing someone that looks after him and is there to check on him in his lowest days- we know it's the thing Isabella never gave him. Man, this boy didn't deserve all the shit that happened to him. Tpn may have become an old known story for me, but Ray's sufferings in his early age will never stop tearing my heart apart.
âą Ok, I wasn't ready for all this angst on Ray's part. I mean, I obviously know GF were hard times for him, but I didn't expect for him to take over the pov. Sis, how wrong I was. Now I'm crying.
âą Coming to the realization that Ray's initial plan actually was to bring everyone in the escape, but he clearly had to give up on it after having realized it would have been impossible to save them đ„șđ„șđ„ș
(I mean it was not impossible. He believed it was. But it wasn't.)
âą Ok but. The last part of the Ner chapter. I really don't want to spoil it for anyone because it really was a beautiful chapter but I really need to say: Emma and Norman. The way it wasn't just Ray always being there for them, protecting them from afar; no matter their blissful ignorance, they have always been there for him too. They never abandoned that lonely boy, and they made it so that he could have a last reason not to give up. A single, dim light of hope in that pitch black, devastating world he was born in. I may or may not be crying my eyes out.
(Btw I had written this before the Ray special chapter came out, and it's kinda funny to look back at it now)
âą The thing with the Ner chapter is: you enter in it after reading two chapters of normal, wholesome children's stories. There's a dark undertune in it, but it's very subtle and it doesn't interfere with the happy, cheerful atmosphere of these children facing adventures together with each other. But then the Ner chapter strikes, and the Ray pov arrives, and it's like being beaten with a bat in the stomach several times. Deep down, you had always known it; but you suddenly realize that all these children are going to die. And, even worse, there's one child who knows. There's one child who has to assist to everything powerlessly. There's one child, one freaking-nine-years-old who knows that all his siblings are going to die, and there's nothing he can do. That a single mistake could ruin the chances of making just two of his siblings survive, which is everything he's hanging to right now. One child who only needs to be loved. Well that... That hits hard.
Me expressing my thoughts: girl this form is shit you can't write something that is understandable to save your life can you
âą Also can we please appreciate Norman taking so long to get out of the forest as it's a recurrent characterizzation of his character to be desperately willing to live just *French chef kiss*
âą I really like how the novel underlined how Norman's choice of sacrificing himself corresponded to a betrayal toward his friends (when you think about it, Emma definitely felt betrayed). It's almost like in his last moments Norman chose to switch roles with Ray, taking on his shoulders the burden of being both the traitor and the sacrifice.
Chapter 4
âą Norman: * â He instinctively closed his eyes and abandoned himself to the sweet memory of that time he understood how deeply loved he was. â *
Somewhere, Ray: Can't relate
âą Emma: Norman, what you want to do when you grow up?
Norman: It's a secret.
Me:
âą â Ray woke up before everyone, as usual. â
A remarkable detail. You'd think Ray, as a good depressed person as he is, would sleep more than the average. The truth is: he doesn't sleep at all.
âą Norman: There's... Another person I like
Me:
âą OK NOW WHY did none tell me about the nine (9) lines of Norman / Don interacting it was worth reading the novel solely for that.
âą WHY DID NONE TELL ME ABOUT DON ALMOST STRANGLING NORMAN AND MAKING HIM LITERALLY PASS AWAY IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH READING THE NOVEL SOLELY FOR THAT
âą Reading about Conny being there hurts a lot but reading about Sadie and Hao brings up a totally different kind of pain. Also who the hell is Cindy?
âą Norman: Oh yes, Emma and Ray, my most dear friends, my closest siblings, the reason I wake up in the morning, my only reason to live, the ones I'd entrust my life with,
Also Norman: Dunnot in the last thirteen hours and six minutes they have been acting pretty sus, I'm kinda sure they're betraying me somehow ://
âą â «I agree, but it feels like you've fallen down a rabbit hole. You're restless, you constantly look off...» said the raven haired boy, distorting his mouth in an hardly intelligible grimace and giving his friend a meaningful look.
«Norman, about that mysterious girl...»
«No, you're mistaken! I...»
Norman, filled with frustration, raised up his voice, starting to lose the coolness that was usually characteristic of him.
«But I haven't said anything yet!»
That being said Ray, with slightly mocking doing, turned on his feet and went away, leaving Norman like that. â
I LOVE THIS BIT SO INEXPLICABLY MUCH I'm always *so* in for Oreo finishing each other sentences / reading each other's thoughts. Here, Norman answered Ray's question before he could even expose it, because he already knew what it would have been. Equally, Ray knew what Norman was going to say even though he cut his answer halfway through.
I love how much on the same page they are, they really... Totally and fully understand each other even without words, and I find it so sweet. Seriously, their dynamic is so wholesome
âą Norman's last birthday gift: the thing that matters the most to him: his family's happiness
Emma's reward: the thing that matters the most to her: her family's happiness
Some things hit harder than others.
âą I don't know like. When you read the novel after the series has ended, everything hurts so much more, because you know these are all memories Emma has lost forever.
âą So you made colorful clothing by "coloring old clothes"? Have fun realizing y'all have celebrated Norman's birthday wearing your dead siblings' clothes
Bonus this epic note I randomly took I completely forgot the context of:

One thing you forgot to mention in your Peter Ratri is Mujika's, her Clan and their blood.
Hi, thanks for the ask! So I think my posts about Peter Ratri are kinda interpretended in a way I didnât intend, because I keep receiving plot-related asks like this. It has been over a year since I read TPN manga, and I havenât even watched the animeâs second season yet. As it has been a good while since I refreshed my memory, let me tell you whatâs left on my mind:
âą Peter Ratri â and the fact that he was âstrongâ enough to fight against his brother to maintain the pre-established balance of the promise even if it costed him the person he loved and respected the most
âą Ray â and his character growth.
âą Norman â and his complex character arc that just added too much pressure on a 13 years old, but nevertheless ended in a heartwarming way.
Thatâs it. These are the things that left a permanent impact on me. I donât really feel like I have to justify why I like Peter Ratri, or why heâs an interesting character. Sure, plot could go this way or that way. It just doesnât change the fact that I enjoy him, I enjoy the little screentime he gets, and I cherish all the beautiful James & Peter flashbacks? I just love him, period. Even if heâs a character that has done visibly bad things, I just love him. I donât really need to dig through ten thousands pages of TPN manga to explain why I love him. I donât remember most of the storyline except dor the basic points, anyway.
In an attempt to answer your ask, though. As much as I remember, Musicaâs existence was a myth until very recently. Musica was on the run and Queen had ordered her to be killed or something, even Norman was shocked to discover that Musica was real and alive and present in their day. There is an entire demon powered burocracy that specifically prevents demons from getting Musicaâs blood, so that demons can live human-dependent, so that the demon authorities can have a dictatorship-related control on human society. This was been going on for at least a thousands of years, if I remember correctly.
Iâd like to ask everyone who judges Peter Ratri and immediately cancels him out a single question:
How easily can you stand up against the roles given to you in your own life?
How easily can you throw away what is âworkingâ in a more or less safe way, just for a likely unrealistic ideal that risks the lives of ALL human beings in the world, as well as the lives of ALL demons, at the risk of a WAR?
How easily can you let go of what has been thought you to be RIGHT and honorable?
How easily can you give up the shape of IDENTITY you and your family has emposed on you? This alone can take a lifetime of therapy, assuming you do not carry the burden of a war on your shoulders, as well as the âbetrayalâ of your kind-hearted, yet idealistic and air-headed sibling.
One more question:
How realistic is Emmaâs approach?
To me, none. As Emma became the typical ânever give upâ character that got through the entire story with minimal number of losses, TPN mangaâs storyline lost itâs charm to me in the first place. I had expected something like Attack on Titan when I started reading the Escape Arc, but what we received was quite basic. In a realistic view, Emma would have died long ago, just like what happened to Yuugo and Lucasâ family. I just say Emma has a plot-armor, which makes me, personally, feel like this plot armor made all her achievements just so easy and hence not-taken-into-my-heart. (Despite everything, TPN was a pleasing read, though. But I have all rights to feel what I feel about it ended.)
Long story short, Peter Ratri is like many of us in real life.
Peter is not a stupid character. He knows itâs wrong to kill peopleâ people of his own species. But so does many people in real life who cause deaths of many, directly or indirectly.
Peter can see there may be a better way outâ but he is too scared to act on it, for very valid reasons, such as the low possibility of it happening, getting himself killed, starting a world war that may cause both humans and demons to go extinct, to break a promise that has been working for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
What if Peter chose to act, but he failed to overtake the demon government?
What would the consequences be?
A war with some weird creatures that no normal humans are even aware of. A chaos in the demon world as well. Destruction of a promise that, along with sacrifices, protected both their worlds. Not to mention his own personal âfailureâ to be the heir of the clan Peter was so proud ofâ which is completely valid to be concerned about, to think that Peter is, in the end, a human looking over horrible things. I think itâs like looking at homeless people and maybe giving them some money or food but then you donât do it next day OR not to every single homeless person in the world because thatâs just out of your power unless you are extremely rich, so in order to protect your mental health, you overloook. I am not saying itâs nice to kill children, obviously. I just genuinely donât understand how people donât notice how very HUMAN of Peter Ratri to act this way. How very normal, to consider everything Peter lived though.
I just think, unlike Emma, Peter is extremely realistic. And when he noticedâ when he noticed that there IS another way, as you said, when he noticed that Jamesâs visualization of a better world could in fact come to true, and he had in fact, been on the wayâ he had in fact, prevented kids who could live, from livingâ
He killed himself.
Although those same kids spared him, Peter killed himself, and he spared them the key to other world before so. He was no longer fighting with these kids because the promise was remade, hence, it was not due to a stupid pride issue of âiâLl kILl tHem aLl.â to me, at least, to Nila, his actions were made out of a genuine fear of warâ of bringing unnecessary conflict and loss to a âfunctioningâ society.
Anyways, thanks for the ask! I just woke up for my morning midterm and I was planning to take a break from studying, so receiving a question about one of my favorite characters made me so happy! What a refreshing analysis! Ah, happy Thursday, off I go!

Mmm yes guess who decided to rant about norman, using the excuse that âhey, itâs his birthday.â
very long post, very many spoilers <3
From the moment I watched the first episode of TPN, I⊠liked Ray. I had a feeling that Norman was going to be more prevalent than Rayâs, but honestly his character (at first) didnât feel any kind of special. I never disliked him per se, it was just one of those things where⊠I liked him, but if someone were to ask me âwhat characters in TPN do you like?â Iâd end up forgetting to mention him.Â
I started to like him more when he said heâd do it because he âliked Emmaâ (something along those lines) but thatâs definitely just because Iâve always been a hardcore romantic and thought âawwwwwwh! Tiny boy! Heâs in love!â. I also definitely cried over him many times, but Iâm sure nearly everyone who watched/read TPN did too- you know, the look on his face when he realized that there was a cliff, watching him be shipped off, and even when it showed him writing everything down for Emma. Norman never failed to stab me right in the little heart, thatâs for sure. And boy did I not expect him to come back and beat the everloving crap out of me-
TPN has some insane plot twists for sure. From the beginning, all the way to the i n t e r e s t i n g ending- while some could have been executed better, Normanâs character has some of the best plot twists. You may be able to get me to think, but you will not change my mind. Our man was shipped off, our man was alive, our man grew like a freaking foot taller, our man was a traitor, our man was sick, our man rIPPED MY HEART OUT OF MY CHEST AND STOMPED ON IT A GOOD COUPLE OF TIMES THEN TRIED TO MEND IT WITH A BANDAID- ahem.
I probably would have cried harder if Normanâs being alive wasnât spoiled for me, but that scene still hits so different. Even now that itâs all over, I read it just to try and feel how it made me feel again. It was a lot like a calm⊠both before and after the storm. Not just the readers, but the characters too, were able to get a heartwarming break. Norman was alive, he was well(? He grew very much and looks like an entire man now, but he was seemingly well), and everyone had a safe place to live for the time being. Even though we the readers werenât there for the âgood olâ daysâ when they were small and didnât have to worry, it still felt (to me at least) somewhat nostalgic. Sorta safe, you know? The previous chapters were horrendous, heartwrenching, and just not good, so it was a sweet moment to relax. Emphasis on moment though, because it didnât last long at all.Â
Next came, oh right the focus is back on yaaaaay murder the demons! Yay, Normanâs going to give Emma a chance! Oh my gOD WHAT IS NORMAN DOING- aka, the chapters where things really started getting all out of whack. In between all that mess of the promise and whatever, our darling, lovely, beautiful Norman was being a dirty traitor. These chapters really hurt my heart, because it felt⊠in character, but- what happened to our Emma-loving, Iâll-do-this-because-Emma-wants-it, anything-to-make-her-happy boy? Whereâd he go? Why was he replaced by a tall cold-hearted man??? Of course, also came the parts where Norman breaks down in front of Emma and Ray, nothing but a child before them. When he admitted that he didnât want to die (another sort-of plot twist), hugged them, cried into their arms. Ahh that hurt a lot.Â
While everything âworked out in the endâ, Normanâs character had a semi-bitter end in my view. While this isnât about Ray so I shouldnât put the focus on him, I dislike how Norman had the focus put on him in the last chapter. Yeah, Ray helped find Emma, but Ray was quiet for the majority of it, while Norman got the honors of trying comfort and help Emma. It felt sort of⊠idk, hypocritical?? Sure, you love Emma, but you still hurt her. I know Ray hurt her too, Ray was also a traitor, but it feels like Rayâs betrayal was⊠less? Maybe Iâm biased, ANYWAY POINT IS, Norman was kinda like âohhh Emmaaaaaa, poor Emma, doesnât remember us, let me comfort youâ and Ray was just sitting there. Maybe thatâs Rayâs fault, maybe Iâm bitter at Norman for no reason.
Ok, in all seriousness- Normanâs character really does mean a lot to me. He pushed the plot in an entirely different direction that I thought it was going multiple times, and certainly kept me on my toes. In reading, things like that keep me hooked, and Norman definitely helped shape TPN into being a series that Iâve kept near and dear to my heart for a while now. Plus, heâs been carrying all of season 2. Without the plot twist of âohhh heâs aliveâ, Iâm not sure how this season would have turned out⊠it definitely would have lost my interest for sure, so I really do love him. In the end, he is just a kid, and he was put in a pedestal too high for any kid to handle rationally. The fact that he did everything he did while remaining somewhat mentally sound, the fact that he endured the pressure of being seen as a god and savior to so many people, the fact that he pushed through obstacles over and over and over again, is so amazing. I love him so much, and I hope that in their little universe, he was able to spend his birthday happily and with his friends <3 (though⊠Norman wonât have been born until 13 years from now- still, happy birthday you dirty rat!!!)
#tpn#ynn#the promised neverland#Yakusoku no Neverland#norman tpn#norman#rant#happy birthday norman!!#i may have a few things scrambled so please excuse me if i do-#i need to reread tpn honestly and i tend to forget things when i get excited and ramble-

The Promised Neverland Fic Recs (wooo)
Hewwo there, itâs ur senpai here to bring you the wonders of the TPN fandom.
Anything marked with a ℠I highly recommend.
Most of these are oneshots but I will write if the longer ones are complete or not.
Light hearted and/or cute fics without angst (the stuff you get cavities reading itâs too sweet)
â„ in which the children of grace field learn to swear by paws_and_tea
"Look, the Grace Field Orphanage is full of children ranging from infants to young adolescents. Justâ full of innocent, happy children who just love life and everything it stands for. Cursing isnât really something young children doâ especially not these tiny angels.
So of course, Ray starts it."
â„Â Breakfast at Emma's by dramaticbanjo
At their usual breakfast-before-class, Emma tells her two best friends about the weirdest dream she had. Of course, they have their own thoughts about it.

â„Â resonance by evanescent
âWhat are you actually doing here?â he asks as Hayato drags one of the chairs over, sitting on it backwards, arms on the backrest.
âThe boss asked me to hang around and help you!â Hayato exclaims, beaming at him. Ray has to squeeze his eyes shut for a moment. He isnât awake enough to deal with this much brightness yet.
âIâm going to strangle Norman,â he mutters into his cup.
...
Ray has a sprained ankle, Hayato is a man on a mission. They spend an informative day together.
(This fic made me lowkey ship ray/hayato or rayato whatever floats ur boat)
This Little Thing Called Love by Lyra_Dhani
Because Norman was a fool obviously in love and Emma was oblivious to love, of course it was up to Ray who had to take the role as the pathetic cupid (and understand what it really meant to love in the process).
Good Things Come in Threes by Zozoa
Theyâve been always together. Itâs only natural they remain together in what is to come too.
â„Â I Want Two Husbands! by TrashCanLife
Emma opened to a certain page and pointed at what it said. "This book Ray gave me said that I could get a husband when I'm older!"
"But Mama! I don't want just one husband!" The little girl grinned. "I want two!"
â„Â How The Children of Grace Field Come to Know by takoyaki (tamagoyaki)
"That," Don states, with a solemn nod in the direction of the trio. "Is a reminder to us plebians why we should not fall in love. If Norman's like that, can you imagine how much more stupid we'd become?"
10 Synonyms to 'No' by takoyaki (tamagoyaki)
Ray has finally gotten Emma and Norman together. He just didn't expect to be a byproduct.
Alternatively,
"Ray!" Emma bounces over, hand in hand with Norman.
"What," Ray flips another page, pretending to be disinterested. He has plenty of work to do and things to tend to. Listening to Emma gush about their date is probably going to take some time, so, "Make it short. I've got some things I like to look up before sunset."
"Alright! So," Emma grips Norman's hand. Norman inclines his head encouragingly. "We want to date you too, Ray!"
Ray drops his book.
Don spits out the tea he'd been drinking over the ancient map he was pouring over. Gilda screams, aghast.
Ray grits his teeth, hauling a concerned Emma and laughing Norman out of the room. He glares at the two dimwits.
"Make it long, now."
Emma and Norman just want to date their friend. Ray gives them reasons not to.
ANGST (Itâs so sad you need alexa to play despacito)
monarch by thats_a_secret
Back in Grace Field, Norman had a sweet tooth. Ray is trying to understand what he has now.
ours by authoritis (TMOTC)
For Ray, the two most important people in his life are Emma and Norman. It kills, the thought of losing them. (What Ray fails to realize is that the thought of losing him kills them too.)
The Ashes of our Days by wordbending
You know the boy in front of you well, the boy with freckles on his nose. You know every boy and every girl in all of Grace Field House. Theyâre your family, and you love them all dearly.
For example, you know this boy. You know he gets bad scores on his tests and complains about the homework he gets afterward. You know he likes to sing and sings whenever he works, at least when he thinks nobody can hear him doing it. You know heâs a poor athlete, and always get caught in your games of tag.
Heâs not particularly special. You know that.

Forgive me by Immawritesomeshit
Ray confronts Norman before Emma could protest his plans for mass slaughter. Sacrifices are made.
â„Â the inspiration and the intellect by TuesdayTerrible
Norman was special. Norman, whom he looked up to so much- who was so naturally talented. Norman with his quit wit and open kindness who read straight through Ray like it was nothing more than reflex. Norman who was open and honest with his short comings- Norman whom when Emma said save them all , Norman had said yes. He hadn't said impossible.

Or the one where Ray pines for all the things he can not have.
â„Â They Don't Know You're Hers by NigiyakanaAki
Ray sighs, tucking in Conny for the night, listening to her mumble about this and that. He tries not to think too much about what will happen tomorrow after she leaves the house. His movements were methodical, done without thought until Conny peers at him, eyes unfocused and half-asleep.
"...Mama..?"
Ray freezes.
OR, fives times Ray was compared to Isabella.
Final Confessions by kamina1993
A single rash confession driven by anger saddles Norman with crushing guilt that he can no longer contain on his own. He truly loves Emma, but his love for Ray has always gone much deeper.
Norman thought far ahead enough to realize that Ray was Mamaâs spy when he had confessed his feelings for Emma to the ravenette, but not quite far enough to realize Rayâs good intentions â the shock of Connyâs death had still been so raw. He knew full well that Ray loved him too.
He rushed to judgement and hurt the one he loved the most, only to realize that Ray had already been fighting alone for their sake most of his life. In their final night together, Norman resolves to heal the pain he caused Ray and refuses to let the love of his life have any doubts about his true feelings or the fact that he will always be loved.
What is love? by Kattycookie
Ray tries to understand the concept of love.

Ray wants to promise Norman a chance at happiness. But it's not easy to do.
â„Â ace of spades by QueenCamelliaÂ
âIâm rigging the game, Emma,â he insists, nodding in thanks when the older manâYuugo, if he wasnât mistakenâslid another drink to him. Taking an angry swig that Ray knows he'll regret the next morning, he growls and slams the glass back onto the counter. âThere shouldnât be a way for him to win unless heâs the luckiest bastard alive.â
His longtime friend and fellow casino dealer simply laughs and swings her legs, looking a lot younger than the twenty-four years old woman she is. âOr the smartest.â Rayâs eyes narrow.
âYou know, they warned us about this in school,â she comments, a cheeky grin spreading across her lips. âLooks like youâve met your match, Ray.â [Casino AU]

Bucky and hypoglycemia for the bad things happen bingo? (if he got some sort of messed up version of the super serum that causes him to burn through his reserves faster? back in the day hydra had to keep him on TPN or something because he burned calories so quickly?)
***Not affiliated with the official âBad Things Happen Bingoâ writing challenge***
Okay, hereâs the thing- two people requested hypoglycemia at almost exactly the same time, for two different characters, so in order to stay with one-fic-per-square, weâre setting this Bucky (more accurately Winter Soldier⊠sorry)-gets-hypoglycemia fic in the middle of the second season of 1985 MacGyver. Enjoy!
Consider this a really weird pre-make of season 6âČs âHumanityâ
âââââââ
January 1987, Somewhere in the Hungarian Countryside
Mac watched the man pace the small front room of the old farmhouse. He was tall and almost comically muscular even beneath the dark parka, with chin-length dark hair and grease pencil around his eyes. With the size of his torso Mac could only assume the parka was also concealing some form of body armor, though in the nearly 24 hours theyâd been stranded together, he hadnât seen the guy take it off or even loosen it. On the shoulder of the coat was a red star, promising an allegiance that left Mac wary.
Despite his best efforts the man hadnât said a word to him. A few annoyed grunts to Macâs intermittent stabs at conversation, sure, but for the time theyâd been huddled, literally in the same room, Mac hadnât even determined if they shared a language. The man had seemed content mostly with spending his time staring out the window at the bleak snowscape- the worst snowstorm to hit Hungary in decades.
Just their luck.
But lucky theyâd been, in one sense. Their shared refuge looked like it had been abandoned in a hurry. Food and clothing was gone, but larger furniture items had been left, presumably too bulky to pack. What had undoubtedly been a bad situation for the family living there had been a stroke of fortune to Mac and his new companion. Among the remaining pieces was an old but still-working woodstove, which had happily accepted pieces of carefully cannibalized furniture. At least, as long as the furniture had held out.
âThatâs it.â Mac said, pushing the last piece of chair into the stove. âNo chance itâs stopped snowing out there, huh?â The man looked at Mac briefly, narrowed his eyes, and then turned back to the window. âThatâs very helpful, thank you.â Mac looked around for a few minutes, feeling a sense of tense isolation he wasnât sure how to describe. Outside the window, the snow had appeared to die down a little. A tree across the way was barely visible in a way it hadnât been an hour ago.
âUh, itâs gonna get kinda cold in here once this stops burning- what do you say you and I go see if they left us any fire wood?â Mac got up slowly. The woodstove had kept them alive, but it was still cold enough in the room that his muscles had stiffened sitting on the floor.
âThey were supposed to come yesterday.â The man said suddenly. The words were flawless, with a distinctly American accent. Mac paused, a sense of unease coming over him. He had assumed the man was Soviet, but the accent seemed to indicate otherwise.
âWhoâs âtheyâ?â Mac asked. Undercover DXS? CIA? KGB? HIT? It would certainly help if âtheyâ were someone Pete could call up for a diplomatic conversation. The man didnât answer, but at long last Mac decided it was something they could talk about when they werenât in danger of freezing. âListen, I got a lot of questions and quite frankly thatâs a cat you canât put back in the bag. But I also donât want to freeze to death, which is whatâs gonna happen if we donât find something else to burn. So⊠help me out?â
The man only nodded in reply.
In the end, if there was a woodshed, it was too buried in snow to find. They ended up trudging back and forth from a dilapidated barn carrying armfuls of feed hay instead. It wasnât ideal, but again, lucky to have anything that wasnât part of the shelter itself. The snow was deep, and after more than an hour of work, they might have bought two hours of warmth. Mac would have kept going- another hour might have set them up for the evening with careful planning- but his companion seemed to be struggling more than he expected.
âLetâs go inside for a minute and warm up, huh?â Mac suggested.
âIâm fine.â The man shook his head angrily, then continued unevenly towards the door. When he turned back to get more hay, Mac stood in front of the exit.
âIts cold out there, itâs wet, itâs not going to kill us to sit in front of the fire for five minutes to warm up.â The fire itself had almost died down.
âI said Iâm fine!â The man shouted, suddenly punching the wall less than a foot from Macâs head. The impact left a crater in the plaster-and-lathe wall. Mac ducked back, noting the flash of anger in the manâs eyes almost immediately becoming one of sudden terror. He changed tactics.
âWhoa, okay, how âbout we just stay long enough to kindle this fire back up, then we work until it gets dark.â Mac said. The manâs eyes still were wide with fear. âItâs fine, youâre okay, Iâm okay, weâre justâŠâ The man backed down and Mac let out a sigh of relief.
The fire had all but gone out, but the room was still delightfully warm after the blizzard outside. Mac settled uneasily back to sitting on the floor by the wood stove and picked up a handful of hay blades. âSo, uh, you ever read The Long Winter as a kid?â The man stared at him with an intensely blank expression. âItâs fine if you havenât- see, once they ran out of firewood they started twisting straw into straw logs, which decreased the surface area and the amount of oxygen that could get to the straw and basically made it so they would burn longer. Iâm hoping we can make something similar happen with this hay. Here-â Mac demonstrated twisting the blades together. To his honest surprise, the man seemed to try to mirror him.
âYou got it.â Mac encouraged, noting an odd sort of smile play on the manâs face.
But several bundles later, Mac started to get worried. Heâd assumed the manâs unsteady gait and shaking had been a result of the cold, but it had been a while since theyâd been inside, and Mac had more than recovered himself. His companion, however, seemed to be shaking even more than he had outside and was having increasing difficulty with the bundles of hay. Something else was going on.
âSo you blew up my truck, you killed my asset and put people relying on his intel in jeopardy. I spent a lot of last night worrying you might up and decide to kill me too. Then I hear you speak American English with a New York accent. What do you say Iâll answer a question if you do?â The man grunted non-committaly.
âFair- Iâm happy going first- you mentioned âthey.â I assume thatâs an exfil team. What made you mention them?â Mac asked. âWere they supposed to kill me when they got here yesterday or do something for you?â The man scowled. âBoth?â
Mac sighed as he threw another bundle into the fire. Something was going on, and it was getting worse. âListen, I know youâre trained not to talk, but thatâs not what this is about anymore and Iâm not going to hurt you- in fact if youâre working for anyone besides the DXS and you end up dead, this is probably going to be an international incident. And right now I donât think youâre doing so hot. Help me out a little here.â In the light from the fire, Mac could see a sheen of sweat on the manâs face. He again didnât respond.
âYouâre irritable, youâre shaking, youâre pale, and even though its barely above freezing in here, youâre sweating⊠are you withdrawing from something?â Nothing. Then something dawned on Mac. It was a long shot, but if it was true at least theyâd have a starting point. âItâs been over 24 hours since either of us ate- have you ever been told you have a problem with blood sugar?â The man looked like he was going to say something, but didnât.
âYouâre not lookinâ to make this easy for me, are you?â If it was blood sugar, though, that was something relatively solvable. Even if it was withdrawal or hypothermia, either of those would be easier to weather with some sugar on board. The question now was- where would he get sugar?
Mac looked out the window. Not only was it getting dark now, but the snow looked worse. There was objectively no food left in the house, and this late in winter, his options for wild sugar were pretty much inner pine bark and acorn starch if he could dig deep enough to find some- and acorns were⊠energy intensive to make edible. That wasnât even acknowledging that if he left to forage for something, he was seriously risking getting lost or hypothermia. If it were just him, heâd much rather shelter in place until the sun came up.
But it wasnât just him. He had to think of something, preferably while his companion could still safely eatâŠ
Mac thought as he twisted the hay into yet another bundle. The man hadnât so much as tried to pick up another handful of hay. âOkay, okay. I got something. When I was a kid my grandpa Harry won a bet. Ended up with this ancient, diabetic horse. You wouldnât know it by the way he talked about it, but he loved that thing.â The manâs eyes narrowed. âDonât worry, this story gets better- thereâs usable sugar in hay, but humans, we can eat hay but we canât really digest it. Weâd never be able to get enough into you to matter. Fortunately, I used to go out and have to soak that old horseâs hay to pull the sugars out of it. Iâm thinking we might be able to use that same process to extract some sucrose into water if you feel like doing nothing except drinking really terrible tea and peeing all night.â The man looked dubious, but Mac couldnât really tell. âYou think about it, Iâm going to get things started.â
Theyâd been melting snow on the wood stove for drinking water in a worn old pot that had been left behind. It didnât get it very warm with the size of the fire theyâd been able to make, but it was good enough. Mac set about inspecting individual blades of hay for signs of mold, and then crumbling the best ones into the pot. With nothing else to do, Mac talked while he worked. âThereâs a reason we canât reasonably make ethanol from grass, right? Pulling the sugars out of grass into water is driven by a concentration gradient and even under the best of circumstances, we might get a solution thatâs 1-2% sucrose. Honestly, since we donât know how old this hay is, even heating up the water, Iâm aiming for 0.5-1%. But itâs what weâve got.â
At the 20 minute mark, Mac beckoned the man over to the pot. âHere- dip your hands in it so they strain out the hay pieces as much as possible.â Mac demonstrated. The man still looked shaky and unsteady, but not significantly worse since theyâd started the process. Mac really, really hoped it was blood sugar. The man paused.
âI swear its not poison.â To prove it, Mac took a drink from his hands. It didnât taste as terrible as he thought it would, a little earthy, and the vague hint of sweetness told him there was at least some sugar getting pulled out of the old hay. To his near surprise, the man copied him. âOkay, thatâs good- keep drinking. Like I said, youâre gonna have to do this most of the night.â The man obediently finished the first pot of hay tea. Before Mac had completely finished dumping the dregs of the first batch and making the second, he could tell the man was already feeling a little better. He couldnât believe that had worked.
By the fourth gallon in two hours, they were almost out of hay, but Mac was confident enough to leave the man in the house making hay logs while he went to get more.
Mac tried to make stabs of conversation, but after the danger was past and confident neither would kill the other in their sleep, Mac found himself dozing in between pots of tea and trips to the barn for more hay.
Mac woke suddenly to the man shaking his arm roughly. There was sun finally streaming through a window that was half-covered in snow. The fire had died down. âGet up. Leave now- before they get here.â The man ordered urgently. Once Mac got his wits about him, he could hear a faint commotion in the front of the house. He nodded, getting up stiffly and making for the back exit. The snow was more than 3 feet deep, but luckily, theyâd kept up a path to the barn. Mac figured he could hide there until the manâs exfil team left. He made to leave, but the man caught his arm.
âThank you.â
Mac made eye contact and nodded. âAny time.â

TPN s02e06
Okay, letâs talk about this... episode. There is a one big thing that we need to mention, but we will get there when we get there. So letâs just start from the beginning:Â
1. Iâm happy that they didnât just include Norman in the updated OP - we could see the lambda kids in there too, so thatâs a nice touch.
2. Many people already mentioned Norman only calling Emma even though Ray is also standing there. Iâm going to point that out too because there is no way that he would just ignore his best friend like that. But we all know why CloverWorks wrote this scene like that - because they just copied it from the manga. Now, I think that somebody forgot that in the manga, Ray isnât present during that scene. Iâm very disappointed with this moment in the anime because it just makes Norman look really bad. Actually, letâs say it, current anime-Norman is kinda an asshole.
3. Onto the big one. Do you know why the reunion scene doesnât work even though they used dialogue from the manga? Because the context is weaker, it happened too fast, the characters donât show emotions and they barely move. Look at this page from the manga, please:
You can see the movement, the emotion and with enough imagination, you can even hear this scene. Itâs just a still drawing and yet itâs very impactful... and then comes the anime. A medium that can use image, sound and movement... how could they make this scene so flat? Where did the energy go? Okay, to be fair, I should assume that Emma was just hungry (because apparently our geniuses are not so genius after all), and thatâs why her reaction was so weak. But Norman has no excuse here.Â
Look at how soft he looks here. Look at how his expression changes after finding out about Emmaâs ear, and how he later comes back to this soft expression after Emmaâs carefree answer. Anime, you messed up.Â
4. Speaking of messing up
Thatâs how you slap Norman. Or actually, you slap him even harder because anime-one is an asshole. ALSO, that line makes little sense without Goldy Pond.Â
5. And then they just left this place. No problems, nobody is caring about two dead demons (and also those dying demon babies, I guess). Also, nobody noticed six or seven humans just standing there.Â
6. Also, I find it hilarious that lambda kids just disappear after this scene. No questions ask, no âhelloâ or shaking heads. No reaction for the âboss manâ getting slapped. Of course, that doesnât happen because it didnât happen in the manga. Not like we were supposed to get some anime only content, right?Â
7. But on the bright side, the music is good. I like how they reuse OST from season 1, but the new one is also pretty good.Â
8. Are we going to ask how, where and when they developed that drug? Not like I care or expect the answer. Not like it was an actually powerful reveal in the manga, because it showed how Normanâs team isnât THAT different from people from lambda, right?Â
9. And then Norman just leaves. You know, like an asshole. He could somehow help his FAMILY since he saw that they live in dirty and all... but nope. He just left.Â
10. The conversation between Emma and Ray in chapters 122-123 is easily one of the most important and best moments from The Promised Neverland. It shows how much they both grew and that despite their differences they are able to work together because they believe in each other. Now, I am happy that they didnât speed this conversation too much, but it wasnât good either.Â
As Iâve mentioned before, the expressions are weaker, there is barely any movement, the context isnât there - Ray and Emma didnât visible grew closer together. They just want you to think that they did. Emmaâs struggle also makes less sense. Why? She didnât experience the cruelty of Goldy Pond, we didnât see her travel around the demon world (that also kinda applies to the manga, but they at least tried to show it there) and most importantly - she doesnât know about the alternative option. Sure, we know about the entrance to the Human World, but they donât seem to be that keen on reaching it. Seven Walls on the other hand... yep, they were working towards that goal and they knew that they could reach them. Here itâs just:Â âNorman, buddy, I donât like it and I have no alternativeâ. Thatâs not a conflict, thatâs a child whining. You are making Emma a whining child! In the manga it wasnât that easy to side with just one character because of their views made sense. Here you have an asshole, crybaby and a helping NPC - good job, ClowerWorks.Â
11. Well, at least Emma understand that here she has no alternative and Rayâs words of encouragement were actually really good. But thatâs mostly due to a wonderful voice actingÂ
12. Boss Man Norman doesnât work. There was no build up (from the beginning itâs just Norman, not mysterious Minerva 2.0), lambda crew didnât react when he got slapped and he looks too young - I know that Demizu said that she made him look like that kinda by accident, but it really works. It shows how different he is from the boy we knew before.Â
13. Iâve actually liked the Emmaâs line about how she hopes that Lambda crew isnât doing what itâs doing just to get a revenge. Pity that we only have a few good moments like that.Â
To sum up, this episode could be good if not for the previous ones. But it would still require a lot of changes. For now I stick with my 5/10 rating for this season, buuuuut I think it might actually fall to 4/10 very soon :/Â

TPN S02E02 - initial thoughts (anime-only)
youtube
^^^ viewing with my friends
__________________________
. More thoughts:
I loved how ep2 used a similar sequence of shots to immediately bring our minds to conny's shipment and further connect us to Emma's association / state of mind.
+ waterdrop of death continues, glad to have it backÂ
.
. âHumans outsideâ
I also talked about this in the video, but I find it interesting that weâve heard two different insights from Krone and Sonju. âHumans on equal footing outsideâ vs. âthere are no humans outside of the farmsâ. I really emphasized the âequal footingâ thing in video, which also still does seems weird to me, and I can come to the following conclusions:
Krone just thinks theyâre equals because theyâre higher up the hierarchy than she is, but in reality even the top of the farms are oppressed by the demons as well.
for some reason, even after being heavily outnumbered by demons, humans found a way to be close to equal footing --- I mentioned breeding the humans for them in the video, and I still think that could be part of it but I also had a different thought: itâs interesting that itâs 1000 years - sad, my 2000 years theory didnât hold up - because that implies 1000 years of technological advancement (phones, the camera, electronics are clearly a thing) still happened in the demon âworldâ (and weâve never seen demons use them, they seem to be a human thing). The highest up the hierarchy weâve seen happen to be the scientists. Thatâs why I think itâs plausible that humans are smarter than demons (cue the fascination and desert of smart people) and they provide technological advancement and food, and in exchange the top of that chain in the humans can âco-existâ. But we havenât seen a lot of demon society so itâs hard to say if theyâre just not as inventive as humans. And even if that WERE the case, I donât think thatâs enough to call it âequalâ, itâs still a massive power difference. Though apparantly, SOMEHOW, the struggle used to be equal 1000 years ago, so- like I think âWeâll kill youâ is still something thatâs likely to be the winning argument even if there was the chance to be on equal grounding again.
But now that Iâm thinking about it, even taking the âequalâ thing away, itâs still contradicting. Krone specifically talked about the humans delivering goods, which are technically âoutsideâ and still âin the farm (system)â - but they are definitely not on equal standing. So I donât think she means the other working parts of the forms.
So I just wonder if there are humans who are benefitting from this system in some way for damning others. Hello ominous guy from the OP.
He doesnât seem too oppressed, going to be honest.Â
Itâs possible I guess that the demons wanted to make sure that there wouldnât be an uprising by having humans âon their sideâ and the higher ups, not concerned for the humans further down the food chain, agreed, thus making it a deal and âequalâ. Since they canât kill every human because theyâre their precious food, so itâs a good idea to keep them in check and not have them hate them actively, but I think demons could still stop a human uprising??? It might be unnecessary drama though.
But even then, you canât really say they keep up a good relationship with the higher up humans to make people further down cooperate, since they are driven by existential angst (become a mom or die). They know humans will cooperate them if you threaten them with death.
So Iâm just really confused what makes the higher ups so different.
inb4 it was just Kroneâs subjective knowledge and I make a fool of myself but again, ominous guy from the OP seems like heâs really enjoying this (assumingly high) standing he has.
IâM JUST CONFUSED.
I donât understand politics, clearly.
.
. The Promised Exposition
[someone talking about how it was portrayed boringly]
yeah, I imagined some sort of visual to go along with the exposition bc the music sounded so fairytale / telling ish but then again, the anime never really showed things that were explained; and let the viewer imagine it.
So now I really have no idea if it's like... actual geographical separation (#more walls time) or like,, parallel worlds?? I feel like taking away the visuals kind of leaves more room for interpretations, and imagination but I still agree that it's sad they don't really play with imaginary things. it's kinda grounded in LA techniques in that aspect I feel.
About the reveal itself: I didnât expect the potential solution to be revealed so soon, and it was different to what I expected. Iâm still a little confused on how the demon vs human fighting was so balanced?? did demons use to be more like Sonju and Mujika, because then I can kind of get it I guess? Like humans have a chance then.
Or where they all just dumb dog demons bumping against trees because then I get it too pff-
Either way, as touched upon higher up: The demon world seems to have some classical human inventions. Does that mean that
a) the demon world just happens to have the people in it that made those inventions?
b) someone else invented them and thereâs a similar technical progress in the âhuman worldâ?Â
c) thereâs no crossing between the worlds (according to Sonju), so it canât be that the inventions are from the human world, I think. I wonder if weâll see it and how different itâll be from the demon worldâs humans inventions.
.
The more I think about it, the more interesting I find this potential solution. It still seems a little too magical, but the setup is already magical and as my friends pointed out, itâs not just a matter of âgo over there and be safeâ.
Breaking the promise could start the demons being enraged at it and breaking it too, and the hunting could re-start.
Maybe it could be missed or just not noticed if just our group left, but Emma has learned nothing from her compromise in S1 and now plans to take EVERY CHILD, apparantly, probably soon to be replaced with every human. And thatâs definitely not going to go down well with the demons.
I wonder if the eventual conclusion will be to save a small group of people, paralleling S1âČs conflict. Save everyone vs. saving those you can right now and coming to terms with the sacrifices you made (which technically, hasnât happened yet. For Emma itâs not like she gave them up, sheâs going back for them. But as this story is being setup now, I think itâs highly impossible to take every human/every child). Which has pretty dark implications! You might get out, but the cycle will just start again as long as any humans exist in the demonsâ world; the suffering will continue. Escaping already likely endangered the humans in charge of the farms, who likely wonât (or canât in case of the implants in the moms) escape even if thereâs a big scale rescue operation (plus good luck with getting everyone while having all demon forces on your back).
But I feel like thatâs a more likely resolution than fighting a rebellion against the demons, which would likely have no end and no satisfying resolution. Obviously Iâm not really sure where this story will lead and what will have to be done in order to cross over.
If it breaks the âpromiseâ and figurative âwallâ between the worlds, it could be damning all of humanity. So I guess the alternative resolution would be that they stay in the demon world, to not risk that, and do their best living a good life there, and also.... probably coming to terms with not being able to save everyone.
Itâs also definitely not as satisfying from a storytelling perspective, but thereâs a lot of interesting conflicts and dangers being setup.
.
. Sonju
Yeah it was sweet how he was like careful being like "i can't leave this around the kids", and being like "it's hard to say this" when he had to tell them about the rule to the promise or later when he asked Emma if they should not do the gupna thing this time. Like he's honest and direct but still caring and that's sweeto
.
. Mom Gilda
The scene with Emma and Gilda was amazing, it was so funny, but even then the art actually did look intimidating, which I felt they struggled with in S1 sometimes (Emma holding Rayâs hand telling him to never do it again was just like âpff-â) but this was really well done.
It just heavily parallels Isabella trying to tell Emma to become a Mom so thatâs??? an interesting thing, that kind of threw me off for a bit.
But maybe thatâs just confirming that Gilda is indeed the mom.
i feel like the art in general improved a bit tbh. Obviously with nature and fantastical elements thereâs a lot more to MAKE look pretty but idk, itâs just nice!Â
.
All the stuff surrounding this was so sweet too, Jemima is too precious and panicky Ray as sheâs crying is just adorable udshdjs. Also Lani and Thoma being like âcanât leave him alone for 2 seconds, keeps trying to dieâ is a big mood but also RIP Ray.
.
. RIP Ray
Speaking of RIP Ray......

TPN S02E05 - Initial Thoughts (anime-only)
the reaction video: Google Drive
.
. Blue friend!
That i didnât immediately catch that they were two different groups was kind of embarrassing asuhjd- they do be surveilling. They clearly already tailed them, but idk why they didn't just show up at their hideout --- I guess that would have been too undramatic.
It was kind of obvious towards the end and I felt like they could have made it a little more dynamic. I donât need still shots. Make them attack and the mask comes off after he also speaks or... idk, so many still frames; masks hiding any emotional reaction (though I do like the whole taking off mask reveal in theory); and then also the kind of.... EH reaction Iâm just... idk, I expected more somehow but I canât exactly pinpoint what I wanted differently.
(This whole thing kind of goes back to my initial theory way back after s1 how Norman might try to infiltrate the system as a demon and then have to pretend to not be their ally in front of them and have to pull through with something, or some tragic shit like that. Or one of them trying to kill him, but he canât say anything and then they realize when the cover comes off --- yeah VERY BAD, Iâm glad thatâs not whatâs happening.)
Iâm assuming the tidbit about farms being raided ârecentlyâ means heâs not been out for that long (at least not longer than a few months) so thatâd explain why it wasnât brought up with Isabella.
I also donât think anything happened when he was removed from GF - but between Normanâs surprised expression when entering the gate room and him being here now, I donât think he was shipped out for food (unless the high quality ones donât get flowerâed right away and instead only at their âeaterâ --- since thatâd at least give the support duration for someone to rescue him or him to do something about his situation).
So Iâm very curious to hear about that whole story and I have a small bit of hope that the recap episode will be framed as Norman talking about s1 from his perspective and then also transitioning over into what happened while they were apart either in next episode or the episode after that. Donât think we need a recap either way, but OH WELL, I hope thereâll be SOME framing to it at least.
edit: I thought episode 6 would be a recap, but itâs 5.5 and likely due to production issues so forget my rant here, Iâm fine with the recap. Iâm not fine with staff being overworked but oh well thatâs a whole different dilemma.
They got so much to do and so few episodes AHHH
I wonder if thereâs any meaning-parallel to be drawn between the old demon having a walking stick and Norman also having a walking stick??? idk it just felt odd to me-- Norman why are you old.
Though gotta also appreciate that anime really went opposite manga approach here, he didn't age AT ALL duisjsd. still babey. (edit: I didnât know about his âinbetweenâ design as much and seeing them side by side itâs actually pretty accurate so yayyy. he babey anyway though)
what did that one guy out of Norman's group do when he leaned down to presumably Don I'm confusion
Norman, surrounding his friends: "lets ominously walk up to them"
.
. The demons' form
I didnât post it I think but I actually made a âyou are what you eatâ joke in my ep3 post but discarded it because Sonju and Mujika look completely fine despite never having had any humans and I thought thatâd throw a wrench in my thought.... and it still does so... thatâs really interesting.
It also seems as if him saying âThe world wonât changeâ is kind of..... like a prophecy sort of thing? It could just mean the massive class divide of course, but maybe if all the demons were well fed with humans, theyâd achieve greater things? Since when youâre dying youâre kind of not in the condition to do anything, and if eating their body parts makes the demons adapt; is the implication that eating their brains makes demons smarter? if so that's a pretty literal parallel to the lower classes of society being robbed the chance to do something great by sheer circumstance. they're just actually dumber bc they don't get provided the materials to be smart
Honestly Iâm a bit confused and not sure what it means, i can think of:
once a demon has ever eaten a human, they have to continue doing so
eating singular body parts makes them generate on you and you need âhigher qualityâ humans to counter-act it. Would explain why Mujika and Sonju arenât affected, since they donât eat humans at all. Would also be an allegory for a healthy/balanced diet I GUESS but I donât think it seems very plausible? it just seems kind of random.
Theyâre descendants from different demons and Sonju&Mujika simply donât need to eat humans to maintain their form.
I also brought up that maybe itâs faith related / a placebo? But that seems even more forced.
I also donât know if the implication is that they need ANY food, but then why are there hands on them?? So I do think itâs that itâs humans specifically that are either the problem or the solution. But since the bigger demons donât seem to be affected AND the higher ups also not, I doubt itâs what causes the problems, unless it somehow is the whole balanced / âhave to KEEP doing itâ angle.
Also the demon scene in the ruins was so interesting, I really liked how it was so somber and kind of just... quiet. Emma, our queen, emphasizing once again.
I wonder if the demon realized it secretly or not... he seemed kinda overall nice and reasonable so I wouldnât be super surprised if he noticed and just didnât really care...
.
. The timeline
GF kids have been escaped for 1 year, they were a month at the bunker, so theyâve been out and about for another ~11 months.
Anna says nothing happened in the past 6 months; what else happened to them? just that they hid somewhere and had to flee again?
Is that also where they got their new clothes? i fail to see why they couldnât just get them at the bunker, would make a bit more sense imo- but oh well.
farms keep being attacked recently and stealing children. it was def not our group, Norman's group potentially? They seem to be pretty badass, so thatâs probably not unlikely.
Alternatively, it could be an overarching even bigger group that also rescued Norman, I think.
.
. Other things I liked
the scene of Emma being kind of lost was... pretty good, seeing our sunshine kind of doubt herself (understandably so after not making progress for an entire year) is pretty impactful. But i also feel like sheâd try even harder to hide it in front of the others. but also why are you talking to a wall, are you mentally okay, probably not---Â
LOVED the nice subtle reveal to show how they mask their scent in the Lani and Thoma scene when they wanted to go with them
shot of the apple rolling and the screen turning over but head-down was cool!!
Emma and ray flinching when the demon's hand reaches out to Lani and Thoma
That convo between Lani and Thoma and how the older ones always give them the food and pretend to eat I'M EMOTIONAL
also their costumes are so colorful :sparkles: itâs such a big switch from their usual outfits-
.
. Other things I didnât like
i'm not even a rayemma shipper and I still wanted Ray to do more than say a few lines and WALK AWAY?? ray what ya doin-
[Lani and Thoma] also literally why did you let them come. This season does really depend on someone fucking up and itâs kind of annoyingggggg :) Though in this case it isnât that much their fault, they just stood around.
also why Norman only say âEmmaâ pls kill me. I was so happy that (very light manga spoiler) ...... Ray and Emma were both there for the reveal but fuck, the anime just straight up didn't care about Ray being there anyway :V
they better gife me a good trio hug to make up for this next (... uh... next-next TvT) episode
I do agree heâs back too soon but..... I kind of canât hate them, with the whole 1 season to wrap it up chaos. Anime industry bad.
Well at least Iâm excited and didnât hate it. Iâm somehow a little empty-headed but it was a good episode, and the surrounding anxiety probably just makes me a little iffy.... Hope the recap episode next week will have some merit and otherwise, see ya in two weeks.

Head empty, pre-TPN season 2 thoughts only.
Normally I donât even bother with hiding spoilers but since the new season is so close Iâll put everything below a cut (if tumblr cooperates) because I do want anime-onlys to enjoy the season with as little knowledge to what madness is about to happen as possible. This is just a bunch of notes that filled my head over the past couple days.. weeks? A long time.. and if I didnât write them all down somewhere I wouldnât stop thinking about them.. so if you understand this whole mess, then kudos to you.
So, hereâs your post-season 1/ch37+ spoiler warning.
Demon language:
With Mujika and Sonju making their grand first appearances, I hope actually implement the demon language this time?
The only word spoken in the language in season 1 was the demon godâs name, which was just changed to âHimâ (sub) or âThe Oneâ (dub), so ignoring it there was fine.
Granted, our demon friends donât say much in their language during the upcoming arc, aside from this moment in ch48, but I can see the anime passing it off as a mere whisper between the two of them just so they donât have to worry about it.
I donât recall any of the GP poachers using the language though.. right? Pretty sure they donât..
Anyways, all Iâm saying is that they better figure something out by the Ayshe shows up way later in future seasons.
Episode count? 24?
Short answer: I donât think so? Did once, but stuff happened. Anyways..
Season 1 ended in March 2019, which is also when we learned we were getting a second season and once we found later on that S2 was originally going to air in October 2020, I immediately thought we were getting about 24 eps.
I thought with all that time between seasons, 24 eps would be reasonable and that S2 would end at ch101. S1 managed to adapt 37 chapters, so 64 chapters in a season twice as long sound decent enough, right?
By the time we reach ch101, it would give us the demon forest, shelter B06-32, Goldy Pond and the short trip to Cuvitidala. (all of which would make this long wait for s2 sooo worth it btw.)
By this point we learn a bunch about the outside world, Norman being alive, what happened to Phil, and the demon bastard himself.
I bring up ch101 as a stopping point because itâs the last chapter before the two year time skip and.. I honestly canât see them doing a time skip mid-season?
I mean, they could if they wanted to, I guess? Having everyone age up suddenly between episodes via a montage, a quick summary or even flashbacks of what we missed.. but maybe at the start of a season? Not in the middle.
Right now we know anime original scenes are going to be included into season 2 so Iâm kinda hoping that once we do eventually reach the time skip we learn more about the search Emmaâs group went on for T7W/golden water/temples.
I counted. If S2 does indeed get this many episodes, ep23 (or 22, if thereâs a break in between somewhere or whatever) will land on my birthday and you can bet Iâll be beyond happy
HOWEVER! all the hope I once had about a 24ep season vanished due to the clusterfuck that was 2020. Thanks to the worldwide pandemic, many anime were put on hold and pushed back several months, with TPN airing this month rather than the original October date.
It was a bummer hearing about the delay at first but I never complained about it. I much rather have the studios prioritize their employeeâs health over production.
Even if S2 did reach ch101, or even Goldy Pond, they would need to find a ton of new voice actors, and with how the world is working now.. eh, I have some doubts.
Cloverworks also has two other series airing this month aside from TPN so needless to say theyâll be a bit busy, especially if employees are still working from home, social distancing, or however theyâre managing to produce these anime.
So, episode count.. 12?
The main reason I have a hard time grasping the idea of another 12ep season at all is because.. I donât know where itâll be a decent place for it to stop?
S1 ending at ch37 with the kids escaping? Perfect. You canât question that decision. But now? When a whole bunch of craziness is about happen? How do you choose another perfect moment to end a season with?
No matter how many anime original scenes they have planned for the demon forest, I believe weâll at least reach B06-32, which will get us to ch52.
Could they go farther? Sure. Perhaps ending at ch59-60? It would leave us off with Emma & Ray leaving the comfort of the shelter to follow Yuugo into yet another demon infested forest, much like how S1 left off, as the escapees left their once safe, comfortable life into the unknown world.
Or end at ch64? After Emma gets snatched by the poachers? It could work. It would certainly leave everyone wanting more, especially us manga readers because goddamn the GP arc would be SO close!
Perhaps ch74 after seeing Norman alive? Just so itâs not a big darn secret anymore to those who are going into this season blind? (how do people manage to stay anime only? iâm not trying to make anyone feel bad.. iâm just impressed? i caught up to the manga right after s1 because i didnât have the self control to wait!)
Ending on that chapter would be so bittersweet to me.. because you know what appears in ch75 and itâs literally one of the only things I care about.
S2 preview trailers already teased some of the demon forest scenes Iâm most excited about, so the only things left that will truly excite me are Yuugo and that darn outfit. (seriously, whenever we do get to see emma in her gp outfit for the first time, someone better scream at me so i can die from happiness.)
Okay, and all the GP kids too.. especially their trio!
Could they fit the Goldy Pond arc into a 12 episode season along with every other event that came before it? I.. seriously hope not?Â
Compared to s1, which was very dialogue heavy, GP is about as action packed as weâre gonna get in the near future, and those scenes are going to fly by once they get put into motion.
Quick example (because it was recent and i canât think of something else atm): the Overhaul arc from My Hero Academia. Off the top my head it was about 40 total ch? That arc took up half of the showâs S4, which was a total 25 eps.
So with the GP ending at ch96, itâll give us about 20-30 chapters (depending on where you personally see the start of this arc I guess? once yuugo leads the duo through the forest, when emma gets snatched or when the battle actually starts)
If GP were to happen in s2 where thereâs 12 episodes.. literally everything would be so fast paced and I donât want them to rush anything or leave stuff out?
Other options?
Itâs very wishful thinking and I would be getting my hopes up for nothing, because I know it wonât happen, but I could possibly see them fitting GP arc if S2 was made up of 18eps?
6 eps for the demon forest, 6 for Goldy pPond, the remaining 6 to accommodate B06-32, Cuvitidala and any other anime original scenes as they wish.
Although fitting about 64 chapters into 12-18 episodes sounds a bit much.. but not really? I seriously have no idea at this point how much story weâre going to cover this season.
Could I perhaps place all my hopes towards a second cour later this year? Like for the summer.. or would I be expecting too much?
This all couldâve been avoided if they just tell us! Seriously, Iâve been thinking about episode count since last year.. and now you have to deal with this mindless chatter of mine.
Iâd honestly be okay with another 12ep season though. We waited this long that Iâll just be excited to see all the children again.
Anime-only scenes:
Those 3 days the children spent learning from our demon friends? Yes please! Did you know Emma not only learned how to use a bow and arrow but a freakinâ harpoon as well? Like.. hello?? I must see this!
Perhaps theyâll even adopt some of the extra pages from some of the chapters, like they did in S1 with the flashback of Norman being sick in ep10.
I know this will be such a high hope, but I remember in ch177 how Emma claims that after they escaped, they all remembered how kind Isabella really was, so if they decide to adapt the extras from ch41-42 & ch45, Iâll cry.
And these pages? Cloverworks, please..
Iâm literally begging here..
Especially these two! Even though I still doubt weâll reach Goldy Pond if we get 12eps.. but in the future! Please!
Other random nonsense:
I may or may not get emotional upon seeing Isabella at the very start when she goes to confront Grandma Sarah. If her hair is kept down as it was at the end of S1 then Iâll give the anime staff my sincere thanks.
We only heard 15 seconds of âIdentityâ and yet it has been living in my head rent free ever since that trailer dropped. I need to hear the full song sooo damn badly, yâall have no idea.
Hereâs hoping they donât cut out the inner monologues again. At this moment I donât remember any specific ones from the demon forest I want to see but Iâm sure theyâre present.
Iâm ready to die at every cute Chris moment they give us.. and this entire scene where the kids scold Ray.Â
Literally every scene with Emma & Ray. Theyâre my top 2 favorites from this series okay? Of course Iâm going to fangirl over them. (they already showed the hug in one of the trailers and i damn near cried)
If we see him, (which iâm sure we will, but i still have tiny some doubts) I hope they give Yuugo a fantastic voice actor.
Also, his nicknames for everyone!! Literally everything about that man Iâm hyped for.
Again, very doubtful weâll get GP in a 12ep season, but whenever that arc decides to grace us with its presence, â63194â better play on full blast when ch92-93 gets animated.
Speaking of music, while Iâm completely excited to hear the new OST that Obata has in store for us (thank god heâs doing this season again btw!), I hope we hear some of those unused tracks from the first season, specifically âTheir Own Thoughts.â
Every time Emma mentions their future, their goals or how her family will always be together, Iâll cry. (thanks demon god and your stupid reward)
Yes Iâll be doing those reaction posts (if you follow me iâm sure youâve seen them by now) after every new episode as I do with other series I watch.. once I survive the usual long day at work, avoiding anything TPN related so I can watch in peace and quiet when I finally get home.. damn it, im already so anxious, help.

TPN s02e10
Guys, Iâm really conflicted. On one hand this episode has done some things better than the manga, but at the same time it has so many plot holes... And I mean major plot holes! But letâs start from the beginning
1. Well, the episode start with a scene that I can nitpick. How do they know what happened with Grace Field after the fire? Is it once again from that data that has 15 years? As I said, itâs a nitpick, but I think ultimately little things like that can ruin a series.Â
2. So, I was right about that Vincent isnât a traitor. I mean, I wouldnât say that it was very difficult to guess. Even if you are anime only and donât know how loyal Vincent was to Norman. But I have a question: wouldnât Barbra be a better red herring? Anime showed how much she hates demons, so it would make more sense for the audience for her to be the âtraitorâ (since I guess we need one). Besides, she wasnât one of the smart lambda kids, so she would be less suspicious. But I guess Peter is dumb, so I guess it doesnât really make a difference.
3. I donât like providing false information, so I did a little bit of research. According to my source (here is the link -> http://aerostation.free.fr/mfr/en/mfr_7.shtml), it should take from 150 up to 300 work hours to build 1 hot air balloon. Thatâs at least 6.25 days. Do you know how many hot air balloons those children build in less than a week? 10 at least! Look, the works of fiction can be unrealistic, but we should set up some boundaries. Is it too much to ask for an anime (that should be about young geniuses being geniuses) to show us characters being smart, making good and creative choices and overcoming obstacles in a way that makes sense? Besides, Iâm salty that they didnât give us more Ray content here. I mean, he was supposed to be an incredible engineer. How could you miss this opportunity? How?Â
4. Hey, why does demons are throwing spears at those balloons? Donât they have, I dunno, guns? Why this anime doesnât want to use guns so badly?Â
5. But I have to say one thing: the fact that first thing those kids do after coming back to the farms, is starting a fire, is absolutely hilarious.Â
6. Also, I love the addition of Thoma and Lannion finding canned food in the old well. This scene comes from extra page added to the volume #20 of the manga, and itâs delightful.Â
7. As I mentioned above, Peter is stupid. Letâs think for a second. They set up a plan of luring children in, then they find out that they will come back to the farms thanks to the âtraitorâ... and they donât suspect a thing. I mean, really? Really? In the manga, he also forces them to come back, but there the plan looks drastically different. Peter is not fooled by a âtraitorâ, he just didnât expect that the children will try to take over the farms.Â
Besides, letâs not forget that in the manga, both sides are playing cat and a mouse. The whole things lasts, I think, about 10 chapters, so it makes sense that itâs better fleshed out, and both sides can take as many wins and fails. Here it kinda goes like this:Â
- I win! - No, because I outsmarted you! - Haha, no, Iâm outsmarting your outsmarting! - But did you expect that outsmarting your outsmarting of my outsmarting?! Itâs fast to the point of the viewer not being able to get invested in the story. You donât feel tension because there is no time for that - the problem disappears before the solution will be useful, because another problem appears.Â
8. But letâs talk about the good side because there is one. I like the whole idea of this plan more than the one in the manga. Letâs look at the steps of the plan from the anime.
         1. Provide Peter with the incorrect info          2. Makes farms believe that the incorrect info is true by tricking them          3. Get inside while they are busy with your distraction          4. Connect to the system          5. Get in touch by children from the farms by blending in          6. Take over the system          7. Help children escape from the adults          8. Buy some more time          9. Reach the assembly point and escape It sounds really good on paper, but you need at least 3 or 4 episodes to make it work. Actually, letâs not forget that it took 12 episodes to escape from the farms. Now, I donât think that we would need this much time (it would be cool, though), but 1 episode is just not enough. Especially by the amount of âno, youâ moments in this episode.Â
9. Another nitpick: do you think a 13 year old would be able to destroy a, I think, camera with a bow and an arrow? The answer is: no, of course not. I donât think you would even be physically able to do it. I mean, you canât even break an armour with a bow! (well, alright, there were some gigantic war bows in the history, but they usually take a looot of strength - and sometimes more than a one person - to pull)
10. The moment when Emma just dropped her weapon on the floor, I was like âYep, thatâs because she didnât go through Godly Pondâ. Why would you drop a weapon on the enemy territory? Why? Sure, she also does it in the manga, but at that point, the danger is gone (well, not really, but she couldnât expect that).
11. Here is a couple of panels from the manga Iâm REALLY salty werenât included:
So, basically, Vincent being a wonderful ally, symbolism, Oliver being a badass (and GP crew existing) and one scene I think is really funny.
12. Letâs talk about civilian demon rising. Yes, it makes sense and I overall like it... but what about the nobility? We know that it exists and that the farm system is simply a method they use. Yeah, it makes sense to start from attacking them (as a symbol), but it was poorly executed. Again, too much, too soon.
13. You know what really sucks? The anime didnât explain a thing about the promise. All we know that it was made 1000 years ago. You would think that it would be good to explain the thing that is in the title, but I guess there is no use, right? Fortunately, it was explained in the manga, and I would recommend checking it out if you are an anime only. But if you are, you probably shouldnât read my posts, because I spoil the manga :^)
So, to sum up... Iâm conflicted. I can see that there was potential, but the episode suffers because of the lack of time. Which is ironic since anime was supposed to go anime-original because they wanted to âfix the endingâ. Whatâs funny, they are making the ending less nerve-wracking because Emma didnât make a new promise, so we donât have to worry about the reward. You know, the thing that bother manga readers for months because we had no idea what it will be. So, I guess we will just get a plain happy ending because there are absolutely no stakes.Â
Iâve also just realised that Isabella might survive this time, since season 2 killed, I believe, a whole 0 named characters. Sure, in the manga, there are not that many deaths, but when they happen, they are painful - bunker dads forever in our hearts.Â
So, yeah, one more episode left. Letâs see what will happen next week.
