As many as 19 wildfires were burning in the Southeastern Australian state of Victoria on Monday, forcing thousands to flee their homes, CNN reported.

Lightning strikes last week were the immediate cause of the fires, Victoria emergency management commissioner Andrew Crisp said, according to CNN. Two of the fires, at Bunyip and Yinnar South in West Gippsland, destroyed nine buildings, including homes, on Sunday, The Guardian reported. As of Monday, more than 2,000 firefighters were working to control the blazes.

The Bunyip State Forest fire, which has burned through more than 12,000 hectares (approximately 29,653 acres), is the priority for firefighters because it threatens the largest number of homes, The Guardian reported.

The township of Tonimbuk inside Bunyip State Park was "all but wiped off the map" by the blaze, Network 10 journalist Candice Wyatt tweeted.

Firefighters are working to control the blazes before "gusty and erratic" winds are predicted to reach the area Wednesday. Cooler temperatures are also expected. However, accompanying thunderstorms could actually spark more fires, and the rain and snow predicted will not be enough to douse the fires, Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Michael Efron told The Guardian.

Bushfire emergency warnings issued for Gembrook, Budgeree amid hot conditions

More than 300 Victorian firefighters have battled a number of out-of-control bushfires burning in the Bunyip State Park and around the eastern part of the state overnight

Hot weather conditions were contributing to unpredictable fire behaviour, emergency officials said, causing the flames to spread in many directions with spotting ahead of fires a particular problem.

The main fire emergency warnings are for a complex of fires in the Bunyip State Park and a fire around Budgeree and Yinnar South, south of Morwell.

There are also watch and act warnings in place for Dargo in far-eastern Victoria and communities near those covered by emergency warnings.

A new emergency warning has also been issued for Cornucopia, Garfield, Gentle Annie, Labertouche, Longwarry, Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon, Tonimbuk and Tynong.

The fire in the Bunyip State Forest is still out of control and moving towards Princes Highway.

The fire is greater than 4,500 hectares and is threatening properties in Maryknoll, Cornucopia, Garfield and Tonimbuk North.

The bushfire 6.5 kilometres south-east of Licola is not yet under control and has joined with another fire. Its smoke column is also causing embers and burnt material to be blown in and around Licola.

Combined, the fires have burnt about 1,000 hectares.
