The morning at the DEA office was peaceful and undisturbed, oddly enough. Steve and Javier had gone to do an inspection of the center along with most of the staff and I was to take care of the report to present it to Carrillo as soon as possible.
I sighed calmly. It was those moments when I was able to find some peace in spite of what we dealt with on a daily basis. Just me and my background music.
-You almost hit me with the door, you idiot.
Goodbye beautiful stillness, and hello unbridled chaos.
-Hey, Priscilla, would you listen to these recordings I made of the witnesses? I don't understand shit of what they say....
Hello to Steve's requests, who doesn't spend a minute learning Spanish.
It sounded like they had found a massacre at the hands of Escobar based on the commotion that had been going on in a minute.
I nodded biting my lip.
-No problem —I sighed, but now with a bit of trepidation as I looked at the 8 cassettes he had given me. La puta madre.
-Cortez, I need you to transcribe this... —sheets and sheets fell like mountains in front of me.
-What is this? -I asked but I didn't get an answer because I couldn't even see who had done it.
-The report as soon as possible, Cortez —Carrillo walked across the room to his office.-And don't omit the witness statements.
I began to feel short of breath and tried to count mentally, but the hustle and bustle in the office only worsened my condition. Priority list. Yes, that's it. Recordings, notes, report to Carrillo. Recordings, notes, report...
-Hey...
-What?! —I shouted so loudly that the rest of my colleagues turned to see me, or rather to see us.
When I looked up I saw Javier who was in front of me with a frown on his face and the rest of the DEA with their eyes on me. Great, yet another reason to want the earth to swallow me up. Tears threatened to fall down my face. I saw in front of me he noticed and tried to get closer, and I couldn't bear to be seen that way.
So I ran. I ran to the bathroom. How stupid I felt. When I tried to close the door, an arm stopped me.
-Hermosa, let me in —Javier's voice sounded from the other side.
-No...please, I can... —I said breaking on the last word, to which he with a little force opened the door.
I felt I had no strength to defend myself. My hands were shaking and I couldn't stand up, making me feel more embarrassed.
But in a second, I felt how his arms picked me up from the floor to what I supported and clung to his neck, as if he was the only life preserver in the middle of my storm.
-Javi...
-Shh.
The whole office looked at us dumbfounded, but it didn't matter. The only thing that mattered was to concentrate on inhaling Javier Peña's aroma. Cigarettes, whiskey and a slight hint of cinnamon. I smiled foolishly, as I confirmed that he eat’s for breakfast the cookies I left on his desk.
-Finish the report, cabron, she takes the rest of the day. And anyone who has a problem has to deal with me.
Murphy just nodded with a concerned look. I knew he didn't really want to burden me with extra weight.
He drove to the entrance of his apartment, and the moment he got out of the car, he quickly took me back into his arms. At another time I would have complained, but I felt I didn't have the strength to argue with him, and because I loved being carried that way.
He deposited me on the couch letting me lie down and proceeded to take off his bulletproof vest and walked over to me and tucked a lock of hair behind my ear.
-Would you like some tea? -he asked, to which I tried to contain my laughter.
-You never drink tea.
I closed my eyes, letting the tears I had been holding back escape and only Javi acting that way could make them cascade down my cheeks.
-Vida mía, don't cry —he said, kissing my forehead.
-Everyone thinks I'm weak and weepy.
-No, no...
-The whole DEA saw how I ran away, Javi. And not even that I'm an agent, for God's sake, I'm a useless attempt at a journalist who only has to make reports with what others tell her. I have to work twice as hard, since I'm not even allowed to participate in a minimum of one case. I’m useless.
-I didn't know you felt that way —I nodded, staring at the bracelet I had been given for my birthday.
He sat down next to me, then lifted me slightly and sat me on his lap. A silence echoed and as I looked up and saw his thoughtful face. I knew he was debating in his mind.
-This is what we're going to do, you're going to come with me on the next raid we have and you can actually participate, but on the condition that you wear a vest and helmet.
I smiled and pounced on him spreading little kisses all over his face, wishing this moment would last into eternity.
For the first time someone is hugging me without hurting me.

She (Colonel Carrillo x f!reader)
Tumblr media
(may I add this gif? I love it.)
Summary: He didn't expect you to show up.
Word count: 1.08k
Warnings: Hints of smut, drinking, small glimpse of violence and Horacio per se. He needs his own warning ALWAYS.
Author’s Note: I hope this is what you expected, honey! Thank u again for the request!
And yes.
Carrillo would be a great sub. And he would like it.
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT!
From a very young age, Carrillo was precocious, too mature for his age at the time. As a kid, he had the ideas of a teenager; as a teenager, the ideas of a man. On all these occasions, everything felt more like a projection of what he would be like as an adult, which left him very lost and uncertain of what it all really meant.
Maybe it was because his father had left too soon, forcing little Horacio to do something that before was just a grunt teaching after he fell off his bike or not fighting back the teasing of the older boys at school. Be a man. Be tough.
This led him to look for things that came to define him as a person over the years, all linked to the simple and concise term of stability. In the Army, he was the most organized, obedient, and focused soldier. The best at everything he set out to do, the kind who liked to learn by himself but wouldn't pass up learning from someone who knew more, just for the chance to have more to be good at, trying at all costs to please a father who, if he had been proud of his son earlier, wouldn’t have left.
Horacio became Colonel Carrillo - collected, reserved and who asserted his pomp among his men. A gray zone of leadership that, under no circumstances, was seen as mixed up in the work itself as he was at that moment.
And besides, he didn't expect you to show up.
Among so much confusion, fear and apprehension brought by Escobar, it was common for people to have similar expressions, identical conversations, pessimistic future projections - a constant crossfire that almost always collapsed.
You lived outside of it all, he noticed. Despite what surrounded the news and any corner of Medellín, Horacio only had to lay eyes on you once to know that there was a unique exception. He found out, later, that you had been in Colombia for two years. You helped with extracurricular art classes at some schools on the outskirts and far from civilization, but at night you served drinks and beers to far less pleasant people. Your Spanish was close to impeccable and judging by the way you prostrated yourself at night work, there was more to the story than he would have guessed for you.
Neither you nor he spoke when you first bumped into each other. It had been a rough night for Carrillo and you were certainly busy behind that counter. You didn't serve him. This lack of contact lasted for three or four visits. On the fifth one, he got to know your true nature and only then did you talk.
A guy wanted to go after a colleague of yours, something like that. He reached to grab her by the waist, but not in time to see you arriving like a fulminating machine of anger and protection, using the mastery of your Spanish to tell him to go away. The guy raged, didn't listen to you, and when you saw that no one intervened to help you, the act came alone. A very strong, firm and accurate punch in the middle of his nose. Only one.
Like a warrior goddess. Like a savage with strong hands and a fixed look on your face, without hiding your emotions or fears to make your intentions clear. He followed you with his gaze until you returned to your post at the bar, which you noticed. The two of you looked at each other, that spark ignited, but Horacio was initially quiet as you walked over and placed both hands on your hips.
“Another one?”
He noticed his beer was finished. The only remnant left of the drink was warm, undrinkable.
“Sure.”
And you put another beer in front of him, cold and sweating with the condensation of the hot environment, but you didn't let go right away, surely hoping that Carrillo would stop with the falsely respectful posture of looking away from your breasts, squeezed by the discreet but firm material of the blouse you wore.
He decided to be more discreet, restrained - your right hand was red, right at the knuckles, and he knew it was from the punch you'd just landed on the patron.
“Are you okay?” It took a while for you to catch what he asked, and when it happened, you wiggled your fingers on the counter and looked at them for a moment.
“You should see the other guy.”
“Oh, I did. Where did you learn that?”
“I know someone,” You shrugged, measured his face in silence, then nodded to the beer. “It’ll get warm, Colonel. Better enjoy it now.”
It was unfair, he thought, to see that you knew who he was but it wasn't reciprocated. Horacio started going almost every week and the two of you talked more - never about what was going on, never about bad things, never about who he was or what he did. It didn't take long for Horacio to realize, little by little, that you were some kind of free figure, complete in your mission to be what you were in every way, which might have made him jealous, but just turned him on.
The first night was intense, particularly aggressive even. You took the attitude of kissing him first, of taking him to bed first, and he was left with the function of being dominated by whatever you were. You asked for more, you took more from him, you pushed him to his limits, and with each encounter he began to realize that you were on the same page, using that connection of two worlds so different for a unique, carnal purpose that didn't seem necessary or relevant until that moment.
He craved the sway of your breasts when he thrust hard, the wiggle of your ass when he took you from behind, or how you moaned unreservedly and disguised when he hit the spot. Craving, almost always, for the scratches you left on his back, the bites on his shoulders and thighs, or your soft mouth as you enveloped his cock with eagerness, determined to make him as mindless in pleasure as he tried to make you.
More than that, Horacio began to long for the moments when you were irritated (which were frequent), angry, raging or putting people in their proper place, as if you came from another place, another reality.
A wild figure, definitely. Wilder than his wildest dreams.

P hiii!!! I was wondering can u do a blurb where little reader has a special plush (like pepe) and one of the daddy*s workers makes fun of her and makes her feel sad and he's just so protective of her and the plush.
ahh this screams Javi. He is a proud daddy and he doesn't give a fuck what other people think.
Warnings: DDLG, f!little, tad bit of shaming, swearing, ends happy
Tumblr media
You were hanging out at Javi's work today. It was a saturday and he had some last minute paper work to finish up. You loved it because there was no one in the office and you could push yourself down the hall in the rolly chairs and write all over the chalkboard and no one would stop you. Your coloring book and stuffie pepe were on Javi's desk as he typed away.
"Papi look how far I can go!" You called to him. He lifted his head up expectantly. You squealed, pushing off as hard as you could. You slid nearly halfway down the hall before slowing down.
"Wow... look at you go!" Javi smiled
You hopped off the chair and pushed it back to Javi's desk.
"How much longer Papi?"
"But I thought you were having so much fun, bebita." He hugged you to his side.
"I am but I wanna play with you papi."
"Almost done." He kissed your cheek. "Why don't you go and hide and Papi will come and find you. Anywhere on this floor."
"Okay!" You're excited. Papi was very good at finding you which made you have to learn how to get better at hiding.
"Okay Papi's not looking." Javi promised, turning his attention back to the screen.
You ran on your tip toes down the hall, looking for a good spot. Everywhere you thought of you had already tried and Papi found you every time. That's when you spotted the best spot ever; a tiny broom closet. You kept the door slightly cracked so you could see into the hall.
A man walked by who you didn't recognize.
"Hey Javi, what are you doing here man?" The man asked.
"Carrillo, que pasó?" You heard Javi reply.
"I'm covering for Luis. Lost a bet... Hey what the fuck is this?" You heard the man laugh. "A stuffed animal?!"
You feel your face go hot with anger. He better not be touching your stuffie. You hated anyone to hold him but you.
"Do you have a kid or something we don't know about, Javi? One of the brothel chicks get knocked up?" Carrillo continued to tease.
"Fuck off." You heard Javi growl. Yes papi, you thought, you tell him! You heard a small 'whap', that was Papi smacking Carillo's hand away from your stuffie.
"Jeez sorry, man." Carrillo laughed weakly.
"I have a girl now. Things are good. I don't do that shit anymore." You smiled behind the door.
"Te creo, Javi. Me voy."
You heard the man walk by and once his footsteps were out of earshot you ran back into the office.
"Bebita..." Javi looked up, face instantly becoming worried. "You were supposed to be hiding."
"Did the bad man hurt Pepe?" You asked, taking the stuffie into your arms and looking for any signs of damage.
"No. Papi didn't let him touch Pepe." Javi responded quickly. He learned very early on how protective you were over your stuffies. You had a meltdown for hours when Javi washed one of them without telling you. Javi only recently earned the right to hold Pepe, and he treated that like a sacred vow.
You instantly relaxed, hugging the stuffie closer.
"I'm sorry you had to hear that. Come here." Javi spun around and helped you into his lap. "Carrillo is not a bad man he just jokes about things he shouldn't. But Papi stood up for himself and for you. No te preocupes, mkay?"
"Okay." You sigh.
"Where were you hiding?" Javi asked, wondering how much you heard.
"I'm not telling!" You giggled.
"Ay. It was worth a shot." Javi chuckled, tickling your sides.
"Papi!!!" You wiggled off his lap.
"Okay now for real i'm done." Javi closed his laptop. He shut his eyes starting to count. "Uno... dos... tres..." You ran back to your hiding spot, this time with Pepe. You weren't going to take another chance with your precious stuffie.

Just to juxtapose mean dick carrillo, how do you mean non husband husband dick???
alright let me preface this by saying that non-husband husband dick is my personal favourite crack headcanon with stevie (no-droids for all u non-mando fucks)
non husband husband dick god hokay so
Tumblr media
Mean dick is for everyone. No regard for rank or civilian status, mean dick does NOT discriminate.
Non-husband husband dick is contingent upon you and Carrillo having an ongoing relationship that’s domestic, but not married (the name says it all really). For example: a young divorcee from a bad marriage, a sweet lonely widow, a single mother, etc etc. Something that puts you in wifey position, but not quite. And especially not Carrillo’s wifey.
NHHD (non-husband husband dick) is angsty; the type that only mutual yearning, shared loneliness, and maybe a sprinkling of trauma can produce. This the type of dick that happens when two people are acting like husband and wife with the full range of domestics and protection and care — where you do things for one another that only happens when you genuinely care for someone. Small things like you preparing a packed lunch for him because you know he won’t eat otherwise, him walking you to work because it puts him at ease once you get there safe.
In either situation, NHHD isn’t like mean dick because mean dick Carrillo is a monster who will fuck you like you’ve committed crimes against humanity and need to pay for it. NHHD can be rough but it’s rough in the sense that it’s been building for so fucking long that when he finally puts his hands on you it’s game over.
He’s going to show you just how well he can take care of you, how much he appreciates everything you do, how he wishes he could fuck all the pain and loneliness right out of you.
No one can tell me Carrillo isn’t a fucking dom in bed so trust me when I say you won’t have to worry about anything, he’ll handle it. He’ll handle it so well that dick will have you tearing up just from how magnificently it breaks your loneliness apart. It’s just so full of this mutual want: for him to take care of you, and for you to take care of him completely.
Anyway I’ll stop rambling but yes non-husband husband dick is my soft but firm dicked headcanon for a Carrillo who fucks you like you’re already the wife he wishes he had.
We can all have a little soft pining respecful strong dicked Carrillo, as a treat 😔🤲🏻 a slop of husband cock sir pls

wait pause ⏸ how could i forget about marine frank.. 😳 (& same i am not romanticizing the military like.. law enforcement 🤮😷🏃‍♀️💨) his dress uniform + HIS SHORT HAIR when he was on duty 😳 yes i'll call him sir, lieutenant, whatever. he wants coffee? i'll make him coffee as long as he wear that damn dress uniform 😳😳😳 (also i know this is a bernthal blog and idk if u watch narcos but my fav character there is carrillo.. yes he killed people hes bad ok i get it but.. he also wears his dress uniform so DAMN WELL and the dark hair? and how hes always so serious.. MAYBE I DO HAVE A TYPE😳🏃‍♀️) ok bye2 thanks for always tolerating my nonsense asks 🥺😳🏃‍♀️💨
I've seen Narcos, really enjoyed it, but haven't finished it ugh but it's normal for me, I haven't even watched many of Jon's movies 🤫 (I'm scared to watch them all so there will be nothing left, I know we'll see new movies/series but I will need to wait for them, and I don't like waiting 😤)
Oh I'm sorry but I needed to google Carrillo I forgot him because of... you know... the plot? Or PEDRO 😅 (he's been on my thirst list since GOT soooo 😜 I wonder where's that list now? Seems like Jon stole it and burned it because I can barely remember who else I've ever liked. Like he locked my hoeness in a chastity belt and has the only key 🔑)
Hmmmmmmm okay 🧐 I haven't found good photos of him in the full dress uniform but yes I see what you're talking about 👀😯 (but I'm not saying anything uh uh 🤐)

and we’re back! i’m so glad you decided to continue btw— and what a fucking chapter (also really quickly, im so sorry it took me soo long to read this but i swear it wasn’t intentional)
bro the way you write. the metaphors; they’re sooo magical. the fact that i can feel time slow down the same way it is for carrillo in the opening of this chapter is proof of this. the thoughts he has in these moments must only be for a few seconds but they feel like minutes— we’re able to savor the idea of them together, which is only made more poignant by the fact that these might be their last moments.
the lines in which you talk about her love mending him back together; it’s such a beautiful understanding of what love should be. and then we move onto the action! and it’s actually so stressful to read; that line about the glass pieces and finding chaos in beauty was one of my favorite parts in the chapter.
the way you terrified me thinking that he was shot! i really thought he was gone— the line about everything being still wowowow. it’s such a relief to her and i fully feel that. hes okay! and he’s with her! and they’ll be better!
this entire fic has been one of most favorites i have ever read. i cannot fully express how many times I have reread— the way you write is so realistic and so breathtaking. wow. fucking wow.
1. how da fuck did u manage to send such a long ass message,, didnt tumblr have a word limit or something
2. shut the fuck up!! im actually crying this is sooooo sweet holy shit raabia tysm for taking time to send such a long ass message oh my fuckin god you have no idea how touched i am fff,,,
3. yes im back and what abt it :p i suppose you cant get rid of me even if its the last thing you’ll do 😬💗
once again tysm ily to the moon and back this means so fucking much and comments on my fics always keeps me going <33

oc post!!!
so i’ve recently gotten back into writing my story (!!) and i’d like to share a bit about with u guys!! :) you can find the story here if you’re interested (literally any attention i get on it helps so much)! this post is just gunna be a bit about the characters !! (very minor spoilers maybe ?? not really though idk)
a short description can found on the link :)
it’s all under the cut, srry if youre on mobile!!
eleanor parks - very ??? hard to describe. she’s quiet because she was taught to be. but she’s trying to voice herself a little more. lots of anxiety. loves her lil sis and would literally do anything for her. is there a sad backstory there???? probably. likes to analyze things/ppl. she’s been taught oppressive ideas all her life but she’s trying really hard to change. i’m v proud of her. also she is mixed race and has to deal with “ur lucky because at least u look white” and “ur not white get out of here”
cameron montenegro - a little hard to figure out i guess. she’s very leader-y. also has a little sister she would die for. hmmm wonder if anyone can relate. very smart, knows what she’s doing. she can beat up a grown man with her bare fists (i’m not exactly saying that happens in the story but u know). super nice but sometimes snaps bc she doesn’t like being questioned for her decisions. for certain reasons. v tragic backstory. so tragic i’m ...... anyway. she’s got lots of things going on ok she’s not as together as she wants to seem
maggie montenegro - cameron’s lil sister. only like a year younger. she’s such a sweetheart. she has a disease!! yay for representation am i right!! she’s learned to live with it, though it complicates things for her a bit. did i mention she is a sweetheart? would probably plan trees in her free time. she doesn’t understand her sister as much as she wants to. especially when it comes to their parents. hmmm what happened there?? what/why won’t cameron tell maggie?? stay tuned folks
tate bennet - my black son!!! he doesn’t have the best backstory either. hmm do i sense a trend?? he’s a really cool dude. very friendly. is v essential to the real plot of the story but i can’t say more than that yet. he’s v opening and inviting. would probably watch anime if that were a thing in this place. idk. he is also v scared of making mistakes (again)
karina paville - my badass feminist queen omf. she’s v angry usually but she’s only trying to protect everyone. 10/10 total mom friend. part asian!! will she help eleanor with the whole being mixed race thing??? who knows. anyway she literally ran away from her cushy life becasue she realized how messed up it was with its racism and homophobia and sexism etc etc. she likes to fight ppl who deserve it. my lil knife throwing rockstar. super smart and intuitive. p much knows everything. again she is v protective and will fight u. watch out
wes carrillo - mystery mystery mystery. he’s such a good soul. almost too good. he doesn’t talk. i wonder why??? a v sad backstory perhaps. he just really believes in the good in everyone and chooses to see it even when it’s not there. such an angel 10/10 would protect. bffs with karina. they both wanna fix society but both in different ways. and he is latino!! and disabled!!!!! if he lived in our time 100% he would spend his time volunteering at youth/homeless/animal shelters and sending wholesome memes to his friends.
overall: lots of different races, different disabilities, different sexualities. some/most of which aren’t mentioned here for spoiler purposes. will i love you if u read this?? yes. will i cry if u ask questions about my ocs??? heck yes.

5 Biggest Longevity Myths
Older people (and those headed in that direction, which is everyone else) are really sold a bill of goods when it comes to health and longevity advice. I’m not a young man anymore, and for decades I’ve been hearing all sorts of input about aging that’s proving to be not just misguided, but downright incorrect. Blatant myths about healthy longevity continue to circulate and misinform millions. Older adults at this very moment are enacting routines detrimental to living long that they think are achieving the opposite. A major impetus for creating the Primal Blueprint was to counter these longevity myths. That mission has never felt more personal.
So today, I’m going to explore and refute a few of these top myths, some of which contain kernels of truth that have been overblown and exaggerated. I’ll explain why.
1) “Don’t Lift Heavy: You’ll Throw Out Your Back”
Obviously, a frail grandfather pushing 100 shouldn’t do Starting Strength right off the bat (or maybe ever, depending on how frail he is). That’s not my contention here. My contention:
Lifting as heavy as you can as safely as you can is essential for healthy longevity. That’s why I put it first in the list today. It’s that important.
For one, lean muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of resistance to mortality. The more muscle a person has (and the stronger they are), the longer they’ll live—all else being equal. That’s true in both men and women.
One reason is that the stronger you are, the more capable you are. You’re better at taking care of yourself, standing up from chairs, ascending stairs, and maintaining basic functionality as you age.
Another reason is that increased lean mass means greater tissue reserve—you have more organ and muscle to lose as you age, so that when aging-related muscle loss sets in, you have longer to go before it gets serious. And that’s not even a guarantee that you’ll lose any. As long as you’re still lifting heavy things, you probably won’t lose much muscle, if any. Remember: the average old person studied in these papers isn’t doing any kind of strength training at all.
It doesn’t have to be barbells and Olympic lifts and CrossFit. It can be machines (see Body By Science, for example) and bodyweight and hikes. What matters is that you lift intensely (and intense is relative) and safely, with good technique and control.
2) “Avoid Animal Protein To Lower IGF-1”
Animal protein has all sorts of evil stuff, they say.
Methionine—linked to reduced longevity in animal models.
Increased IGF-1—a growth promoter that might promote unwanted growth, like cancer.
Yet, a huge study showed that in older people, those 65 or older, increased animal protein intake actually protected against mortality. The older they were and the more protein they ate, the longer they lived.
Meanwhile, low-protein diets have been shown to have all sorts of effects that spell danger for older people hoping to live long and live well:
Slow the metabolism, increase insulin resistance, and cause body fat gain.
Impair the immune system and make infections more severe.
Reduce muscle function, cellular mass (yes, the actual mass of the cell itself), and immune response in elderly women.
Impair nitrogen balance in athletes.
Increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Increase the risk of sarcopenia (muscle wasting).
And about that “excess methionine” and “increased IGF-1”?
You can easily (and should) balance your methionine intake with glycine from collagen, gelatin, or bone broth. In animals, doing so protects against early mortality.
In both human and animal studies, there’s a U-shaped relationship between IGF-1 levels and lifespan. Animal studies show an inverse relationship between IGF-1 and diabetes, heart disease, and heart disease deaths (higher IGF-1, less diabetes/heart disease) and a positive association between IGF-1 and cancer (higher IGF-1, more cancer). A recent review of the animal and human evidence found that while a couple human studies show an inverse relationship between IGF-1 and longevity, several more show a positive relationship—higher IGF-1, longer lifespan—and the majority show no clear relationship at all.
3) “You’re Never Getting Back That Cartilage—Once It’s Gone, It’s Gone”
Almost every doctor says this. It’s become an axiom in the world of orthopedics.
But then we see this study showing that people have the same microRNAs that control tissue and limb regeneration in lizards and amphibians. They’re most strongly expressed in the ankle joints, less so in the knees, and even less so at the hip—but they’re there, and they’re active.
I’ve seen some impressive things, have been able to personally verify some stunning “anecdotes” from friends and colleagues who were able to regrow cartilage or at least regain all their joint function after major damage to it. Most doctors and studies never capture these people. If you look at the average older person showing up with worn-down joints and degraded or damaged cartilage, how active are they? What’s their diet?
They are mostly inactive. They are often obese or overweight.
They generally aren’t making bone broth and drinking collagen powder. They aren’t avoiding grains and exposing their nether regions to daily sun. They aren’t doing 200 knee circles a day, performing single leg deadlifts, and hiking up mountains. These are the things that, if anything can, will retain and regrow cartilage. Activity. Letting your body know that you still have need of your ankles, knees, and hips. That you’re still an engaged, active human interacting with the physical world.
4) “Retire Early”
This isn’t always bad advice, but retiring and then ceasing all engagement with the outside world will reduce longevity, not increase it. Having a life purpose is essential for living long and living well; not having one is actually an established risk factor for early mortality. And at least when you’re getting up in the morning to go to work, you have a built-in purpose. That purpose may not fulfill your heart and spirit, but it’s a purpose just the same: a reason to get up and keep moving.
Retiring can work. Don’t get me wrong. But the people who retire early and make it work for their health and longevity are staying active. They’re pursuing side projects or even big visions. They have hobbies, friends, and loved ones who they hang out with all the time.
The ones who don’t? Well, they are at at increased risk of dying early.
You don’t have to keep working a job you hate, or even a job you enjoy. You can retire. Just maintain your mission.
5) “Take It Easy As You Get Older”
As older people, we’re told that sex might be “too strenuous for the heart” (Truth: It’s good for it). We’re told to “take the elevator to save our knees.” They tell us “Oh, don’t get up, I’ll get it for you.”
They don’t tell me that because, well, I’m already up and doing the thing. I’m active and obviously so. I don’t take it easy.
Stay vigorous, friends. Stay vivacious. Don’t be foolhardy, mind you. Be engaged.
“Take it easy” quickly becomes “sit in the easy chair all day long watching the news.” Don’t let it happen.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t rest. Rest is everything. Sleep is important. But you must earn your rest, and when you have the energy, take advantage of it. Don’t rest on your laurels.
As you can see, there are tiny kernels of truth in many of these myths. We should all be careful lifting heavy things and pay close attention to technique and form. Everyone should care for their cartilage and avoid damage to it. No one should continue working a job that sucks their soul and depletes their will to live if they can move on from it. And so on.
What we all need to avoid is sending the message to our brain, body, and cells that we’re done. That we’ve given up and our active, engaged life is effectively over. Because when that happens, it truly is over.
Someone asked me when aging begins. How old is “old”?
I think I know now. Aging begins when you start listening to conventional longevity advice. As I said on Twitter earlier today, healthy aging begins when you do the opposite.
Want more on building a life that will allow you to live well into later decades? I definitely have more on that coming up. A perceptive reader shared the news in one of the Facebook groups already, so let me mention it here. My new book, Keto For Life: Reset Your Biological Clock In 21 Days and Optimize Your Diet For Longevity, is coming out December 31, 2019. I’ll have more info, including a special bonus package for those who preorder, in just a few weeks. In the meantime, you can read more about it here on our publisher’s page.
That’s it for today, friends. Chime in down below about longevity or any other health topics you’re thinking about these days. What are the most egregious aging myths you’ve heard? What do you do instead? Take care.

okay. wow. i have so many thoughts bc this chapter was written exquisitely! first of all, the sinner/saint metaphor was so heartbreaking— the likening of a kiss with salvation, along with the line about icarus was my favorite favorite paragraph. then, when she kisses him and he leaves without embracing her in the same way god that made me tear up. what makes it even more heartbreaking is that you write in depth about his thoughts so we can feel how painful it is for him to commit (1/3)
to these actions. also, the fact that he comes to the realization that he should love you in the same way that you love him juxtaposed with the hostage situation my heart!! his terror when he realizes you might be in danger and the imagery you inserted with the traffic lights and the lines “red, white, screams of fright” your writing makes me FEEL. the last line, the cliffhanger, and also the second to last line—- “the howling of the wind growing louder” wowowow! (2/3) this chapter was beautifully written and i am in love with both this story and your writing!! (3/3)
hahah i felt so dumb writing that “red, white, screams of fright” line hhh i was wondering if i should delete that one 💀 also tysm! i was trying a new way of writing with the metaphors im glad you liked it!! and yes~ i tbh hc carrillo as a rlly gentle and caring lover that struggles w/ internal turmoil lol. thank u for your kind words!! they mean so much~ id also like to thank exo for making ‘artificial love’ and ‘love me right’ for giving me inspo for this chapter 😌
