just thinking out loud but the Steve going to college because believe it or not he’s finally found a very specific course that catches his interest and it happens to be in Fort Wayne so he can still check in on the kids. It gets even better when Robin and Nancy decide they want to stay local too so they all pack together and get excited (and nervous) about moving.
The time comes and they leave Hawkins and suddenly it’s the first proper day of classes. The three of them are spread over the campus so Steve treks alone to his first class, the reason he chose the college in the first place: Introduction to Folklore.
He’s so ready to learn about something he’s finally interested in. Doesn’t pay attention to the usual seating conventions and social status, just wants to know where they’ll be starting, cliques and popularity contests a long gone part of his life.
The professor is in her stride, painting a picture with her stories of creatures from folklore and the origins, Steve can’t believe it but he’s genuinely excited to learn for once. The pinpoint accuracy focus on the professor is shattered when a voice erupts next to him
‘That’s great and everything but shouldn’t there have been a moth man lover sighting by now? Where is the justice for this noble creature I ask you? I know there’s monster fuckers out there professor.’
The professor slowly engages the guy in conversation but Steve is seething. Who does this guy think he is? Does he think this is a private class just for him? That Steve isn’t paying good money to be here? So pen clenched in a white knuckled hand Steve lets his bitchy temperament get the better of him ‘I thought this was a folklore class? Not a self insert romance lit course’ he clearly says it too loud because the boy next to him. The one who started all this turns to Steve and raises an eyebrow, a smug smile on his face and lets out a ‘huh interesting’ and what’s Steve supposed to do with that? And more importantly what’s Steve supposed to do with the fact that the guy is stupid hot with this long hair, tattoo combo and that the smug look on his face definitely made Steve’s heartbeat thunder in his ears? Out of rage on behalf of his fellow students, of course.
Turns out it doesn’t matter, the class is over and Steve is running out the door, determined not to get caught by those eyes again.
It starts off a Thing between them. Every week the guy, Eddie, will challenge the lecturer with some inane point that Steve refuses to accept he actually believes to the point of Steve firing back an argument at him. Eventually they are full on debates in the middle of the class that the professor has to mediate after eddie decided that standing on the table would be appropriate (of course, not to be outdone, steve followed).
They absolutely do not have a thing for each other and the rest of the class absolutely do have a sweepstakes on when they’ll get together

just got a comment on a fic i wrote four years ago that made me reread all the other fic i wrote for that pairing and remember how deep i dove into a specific album because all the lyrics of it reminded me of that pairing and how i very quickly lost the thread of my obsession with that pairing that made writing them fun but how i love them again just as much these days and want to rewatch them from the beginning and maybe if i return to that same music too i’ll unlock the ability once more to write the kind of fic for them which always made me very happy so i’m just saying you never know what effect your fic comments might have but you should tell fic writers how you feel if you love their work because it is always always always one of the best ways to encourage more of it

So…
A host for Starcourt Study Hall posted on r/byler a couple of weeks ago, asking for information about Byler for a ship episode she and her co-host are planning. This podcast not only does breakdowns of each episode of the show, but does episodes digging into themes, theories, MBTI testing of particular pairings, and, you guessed it, ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’ve done episodes on Jancy, Lumax, Stancy, Jopper (an MBTI and a ship one), and Mileven. I reached out through reddit DM and have been communicating with her since. I’ve sent posts by @emblazons, @queerxqueen, @kidovna, @givehimthemedicine, @chirpsythismorning @gayofthefae @snacksizedgates @tryingonametaphor @doriandrifting @starbylers @conflictofthemind @aemiron-main @byler-alarmist @mikesbasementbeets @sennqu and @theninaproject - yep, this is an exhaustive list. I also linked her to my blog archive so she can see my reblogs and posts.
The first episode script is 1 hour 8 mins. Yes, I said first, because the second episode will be out next Wednesday 16/9.
The host I’ve been communicating with, Marina, has told me that she’s now fully on-board with byler, ‘hook, line, and sinker’, that she’s excited, and that she thinks it makes more sense of a lot of things re: Mike. She also concluded that it ties into broader themes and makes the show richer. Bylers? Are not crazy.
ETA; this week’s ep covers s1 and 2, and next week’s covers s3 and 4.

I watched the entire walkthrough of the Stranger Things VR game. I obviously saw so many posts about the Byler content we got from it. I wanted to see the M*leven content as well though because I’m trying to understand what their shippers see in it. I was expecting to see some M*leven moments, like them interacting together and stuff, especially in Eleven’s chapter, but. there. isn’t. any. Did I miss a scene of them together? The only scene is where Henry is trying to taunt Mike and get in his head by insinuating that losing El and wondering what could’ve been is what he fears most but it doesn’t work. Henry doesn’t know what Mike’s afraid of and asks Will. Hmm… wonder what his fear is. Anywaaaaays… El and Will each have chapters. Mike doesn’t. There’s Byler moments in Will’s chapter. There’s no M*leven moments in El’s. It’s shown that Mike saves Will from Henry. It shows how incredibly important Mike is to Will and how much Mike means to him. It does that in El’s chapter as well. Not with Mike though, with Max. Who does Will need? Mike. Who does El need? Max.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel crazy because like where is the M*leven moments?? If season 5 is anything like this and I’m meant to root for M*leven over Byler then I’m just?? I don’t even know. I’m really trying to understand. I’m so confused. I feel like an idiot because I’m not getting it. I don’t see it in the show. I don’t see it in this game. My other favorite ship is Shawn and Angela from Boy Meets World. Yes, a straight ship. No M*leven shipper can accuse me of not liking M*leven because it’s a straight ship and just liking Byler because it’s a mlm ship. That’s not it. It’s because they just make sense to me. The way they are with each other and how deeply they care for one another is beautiful. It’s beyond friendship from Will’s side, and it seems to be beyond friendship from Mike’s side based on what I’ve seen. Could I be wrong? Of course. All I know is that if the writers want me to root for M*leven, they’re doing such a bad job. I can’t get there with them. There are so many incredible straight ships in shows and movies. Heck, you have Jopper, Jancy, and Lumax in Stranger Things being some great examples. M*leven is just not one of them. Byler is so well written and would be such an important, groundbreaking endgame ship. But sure, let’s have M*leven, a badly written straight ship, be endgame instead. Especially about a show for the outcasts, misfits, marginalized, etc. That would be the cherry on top for a show like this.

"The Last Lie," as the final variation of "The First Lie," why it would be the perfect title
+ the importance of the the songs
(before anything: yes. i know. "it's literally just a song title." but obviously the song is important to the duffers if they wanted multiple versions to put in each season. this song is insight to what's not always being verbalized. the series of this song contains themes of queerness, romantic love, self-discovery, honesty and acceptance. all of it is meaningful and that includes the title pattern that's going on.)
ok so this is gonna be very much a rambling post.
but i was thinking of all the variations of "the first lie," and how the final one is most definitely gonna be for byler, or related to it in some way.
so far we've got... The First Lie (jancy) // The First I love You (mlvn s3 kiss, robin's coming out) // Being Different (Will's Monologue, 3:20-4:29)// Jopper scene S4
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes. jopper has their own variation! you can tell by the lack of bass, extra added synths and different build up that it's a different version... i'm just not sure why it wasn't included in the soundtrack.)
i got bored and began thinking what the title would be if it were to be for byler.
i've noticed many people suggest to capitalize the 'L' in 'love' to prove that mike's love for will is something real, where as it wasn't for el.
i guess they could do that.
but... that requires them to say that phrase. and i really don't think mike and will are gonna say that to begin with, nor would i want that.
in the stranger things universe, "i love you" has only been a phrase used platonically or by failed relationships. the show really loves to depict love by actions or with other words. they enforce the theme "actions speak louder than words" with their relationships.
in real life, it's important to hear those words 'i love you.' however this is a fictional story that's crafted with precise choices to send an underlying message to the audience. so going by that this means that in this fictional world, el shouldn't need to hear mike say it. no other couple in the show had this issue other than stancy, and well.. you know how that ended up. bullshit.
mike and el had this issue because they don't love each other that way. the desire to hear it comes from none other than their codependency. they rely on each other to have some form of identity or purpose, slowly destructing who they really are in the process.
so while i understand why some may want mike to say 'i love you,' the point is he shouldn't have to say it. his actions should be enough to prove it, if we're following along the themes this narrative is trying to display.
his actions fall flat, and will continue to. although his actions ARE signs he CARES about her, their relationship has no chemistry and especially compatibility. there is no actual romantic love. just unhealthy attachment.
will feels better about himself, he feels loved as a whole, not just as mike's potential partner. mike makes him feel better for being different... but when has mike ever said anything specifically like that? he's never sat down and said, "hey, it's okay to be different." it's mike's actions that make him feel that way. mike's love for will is already being said without actually saying it, just like the other endgame ships. it's following the active theme.
and yeah it can get confusing.. because we're in the pov of will, who thinks it's unrequited... we lost mike's pov... mike's with el.. but the show is deliberately trying to make the audience (at least the heteronormative-blinded part) MISS it, so it can be a whole twist and all that and continue to enforce the theme they're going for.
and let's say the word 'love' is used, i think it'd be used in the context of a letter (ex: love, mike). i just really don't think they will make them say "i love you" if no other endgame couple has before. it disrupts the theme.
now, if not "The First I Love you," then what would be a good title?
personally, i like the idea of "The Last Lie."
why?
because mike needs to stop fucking lying to himself and denying his homosexual desire for his childhood best friend and stop pretending like that dragon poster isn't gay as fuck
no but, THINK ABOUT IT. (this is about to get severely cheesy and probably cringe inducing and i'm sorry)
imagine it. thee byler kiss scene, or whatever it ends up being (but it has to be related to them in some way). this is the moment in which mike finally confronts his truth and accepts it. he isn't bullshitting who he is anymore - being gay, his interests, his true personality.
the 'normal' boy who he tried so hard being... the 'normal' boy he risked his friendships and the love of his life just to be... the 'normal' boy that doesn't enjoy nerdy games... the 'normal' boy who he masked behind just to live a lie.
whether it's by words or a kiss, he's finally letting that lie of a boy go the moment he shares his love for will. and in those seconds of time, it's almost like a promise to himself that 'normal' boy would be the last lie he'll ever try to live again
i fucking love characters who break their own moral code. that's mike - the character that enforced telling the truth and being honest to those you care about, and still ended up being a liar all along.
and it's not even that mike's relearning "friends don't lie." no. he already gets that. we already get that. you're free to disagree here, but what i personally get from mike's overall character is that there will always be an inability to be truthful to others if you can't be truthful to yourself first. mike must live his live authentically and stay true to who he is and what defines him if he wants happiness. otherwise, the lie he digs himself into will only get bigger and bigger, and inevitably will destroy what's important to him (his relationships in this case) and himself.
all this... it already fits the themes the other song variations have been displayed in:
acceptance of a love and finally letting it in -> jancy/jopper
coming out and speaking your truth -> robin
queerness -> robin, mike, will
self-discovery -> mike
just imagine all of those themes just smashed into one title and scene. that track would carry so much meaningful weight.
Ok
maybe this post was just my secret love letter to those songs. but am i really crazy for caring about them? soundtracks in film/tv deserve more love! that little melody is clearly so important to the story, the way the titles it transitions through and what it tells us. i just think it's genuinely brilliant how they managed to do that with one instrumental. that's storytelling!!
ok i'm done now thank you kyle dixon & michael stein. ur my fave bylers

Read your post on your opinions on Byler and why you think it’s a genius love story. I’m curious though you mentioned Mike being gay, rather than Bisexual. I’ve been in the fandom since s1 and never actually thought abt it that way, what’s some evidence that made you see gay Mike instead of bi Mike?? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
up until i got on tumblr a few weeks ago (very new to this business haha) i didn't really have super strong opinions on his sexuality either way. i was kinda just like, okay, mike is queer in some sense of the word, but the more i've read theories and thought about it, i feel it's almost more powerful if he's explicitly gay. this is in no way biphobia- i'm bi- and i don't at all believe that him being bi would discredit the importance of his character being queer in the grand scheme of queer representation, but i do feel like having a character who actively grapples with feelings of inadequacy out of insecurity based in not being able to love his girlfriend the way he thinks he's supposed to and deep seeded disgust and internalized homophobia with himself and his own faults especially when there's just SO MUCH beautiful and real love between straight couples around him- think lumax and jancy- is really intelligent and insightful writing. as far as evidence goes, i think there really is a lot of importance in him not being able to tell el he loves her. yes, you could say that it's just because he flat out doesn't love her, but you could also say that he knows that he doesn't and could never love her in the way he thinks he should should, in the way she deserves. that's why will's real and genuine love confession through the eyes of el makes him think "okay, maybe this could work. she loves me in the way she's supposed to, maybe it's possible". the reason will's words are so fueling for him is because they serve as proof and validation that he isn't doing anything he deems wrong and that there is the same level of beauty and intimacy in their relationship that there is in lumax or jopper or jancy. this leads in to my painting theory and how i think learning the truth about the painting will ultimately be the thing that makes mike face his internal conflicts head on because he will realize that he doesn't and can never have this perfect heterosexual relationship because he isn't heterosexual.
wow i just went on a crazy rant there hello
also- lucas's season one line about mike only liking el because she's the first girl to look at him or something like that is a good one too

Some Byler hope, though I doubt anyone needs it
A lot of Byler doubters suggest that if Will's love for Mike is unrequited, a new love interest will be introduced in the final season and that love interest will become Will's boyfriend.
The interesting thing about this idea though: When have the Duffer's ever had a relationship in this show that doesn't date back years? Joyce and Hopper dated in High School. Jonathan and Nancy have always known each other. Sure, you could say, well, Mileven and Lumax become couples at the end of their respective seasons (which is pretty quickly compared to Byler or Jopper's slowburn). But like, the difference is those two couples have been dating for the majority of the show (like 3 or 4 seasons...). Why would they introduce someone for Will last minute? And yes, you could argue about Robin and Vickie, but still, Vickie is being introduced in the second to last season, Robin was barely introduced a season prior, so it makes sense. Also, it doesn't seem in character for Will to rush into another relationship with someone he hasn't known that long. As far as we know Will has never had a crush on anyone else but Mike, his heart is set on Mike! It would be awful to take that away from him in the final season when he's already gone through so much!

BYLER and SUBSTITUTING
like this:
Because, I mean, without you, we'd all fall apart. Even me. Especially me. These past few months, I've been so lost without you. It's just, I'm so different from other people, and……when you're…when you're different, sometimes……I feel like a mistake. But you make me feel like I'm not a mistake at all.
which is the most OBVIOUS substitution in byler history because it is clear the audience is meant to pick up on it. it's not subtle. but-- mike does this too.
“It's not my fault I don't like girls. I'm not trying to be a jerk. Okay? But we're not kids anymore. I mean, what did I think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? We were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?”
the difference is mike is projecting onto will rather than a side speaker. and you might think this isn't supposed to be used as a substitution for himself. but will is not the odd one out here. dustin wanted to play games and he had a girlfriend. like, logically, its two v two because they knew dustin would also want to play dnd. (and i'm not assuming, they say it in the fight.)
another important line here: we're not kids anymore.
okay, michael wheeler, let's look at byler speeches from when you guys were kids.
Do you remember the first day that we met? It was... It was the first day of kindergarten. I knew nobody. I had no friends and... I just felt so alone and so scared, but... I saw you on the swings and you were alone, too. You were just swinging by yourself. And I just walked up to you and... I asked. I asked if you wanted to be my friend. And you said yes. You said yes. It was the best thing I've ever done.
nothing's in red. nothing's crossed out or changed. because mike said exactly what he meant here (hoorah!). back when they were kids when they could actually tell each other their emotions and feelings because it didn't have to masquerade a romantic love. that love was normal to them until it was ostracized through internalized and externalized homophobia.
and what is stranger things at its heart??
a sci-fi show with villains and superpowers and lore YES BUT BEYOND THAT AND INTO THE CHARACTER ARCS
it's a show about kids growing up (and also jopper).
so? so, the change in their substitution says a lot. it says how hard they are hiding their feelings from each other, how it increases as they get older. which leads us back to their true feelings, aka season 2 ish, where they were pretty openly in love, in my opinion. holding hands, comforting each other, making freaking love confessions as seen above.
and juxtapose that with season 4, with all its red and changes in meaning?? we as viewers should understand that nothing the boys say is what they mean. they are hiding!!!
aka byler endgame

What do you think about the fact that Netflix changed Stranger Things from TV-14 to TV-MA?
I think they told us they would before? I feel like I've heard it from someone before either in an interview or a panel???? they said they were going to change the rating to a mature one for season 5 because they were sort of always taking it to an even scarier and more explicit level when the kids were finally grown ups and they could go full horror and gore more easily!
I guess there's gonna just be more gruesome death in the show, we know many soldiers are going to die already because of the leaks plus we know about people being attacked violently and there's gonna be lots of blood and stuff like that so there's sort of more violence involved than usual
They could also show more explicitly sexual scenes for example with Jopper, personally I don't think it's really their style to go full sexually explicit since they kind of seemed convinced that the less you kiss on screen the more powerful is the love lmao
But we'll see! In general it's good for me because I'm already an adult, a bit less for the young teens that were watching with their families before... but either way I've always thought this show was supposed to be for adults, I think there's extremely traumatic stuff in season 1 😀
Also good because there's even more reason to think that they go full explicit with the focus on the AIDS crisis... which...yes please do that, IT'S TIME 🤗

You know what really annoys me about stancy shippers?
They seem to totally ignore what Nancy wants in life.
Like yes, Steve is great. He’s amazing. He’s brave, good-looking, caring… and yes he really changed from what he was in s1 to what he is now.
Yes, he does deserve Nancy.
But, hear me out, NANCY IS NOT A PRICE!
Nancy is a person, she has her own feelings and desires and goals in life.
We know that Steve wants a big family, six little nuggets. And Nancy wants a career, which is hard enough for a woman even without maternity leave for six kids.
So, Steve deserves love, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be from Nancy.
(Also shoutout to all jopper, lumax, jancy and byler shippers because you people really have thought about what’s good for BOTH characters in the ship, not just for your favorite character.)

hello!!
i have a thought to share with you that just hit me. a lot of people have a lot of different theories about will, sara, holly, jane, and el. some of them think holly and jane are the same person, some people think will and sara are the same because the lab messed with hopper's memories, and then you think el is an extension of will and they're really the same person.
is it possibly that they're all the same person? especially since holly doesn't seem to exist until after will's disappearance, and that's around the same time el pops into existence, and baby el aka jane looks just like holly, who looks a lot like sara.
i'm just thinking about how sara was hopper's kid, and now will is going to be hopper's kid by jopper, and el aka jane is hopper's kid by adoption, and holly has a weird track record of not existing as well as her having a really close connection to the supernatural, specifically the lights in the byers house and will's room.
i'm excited to hear what you think about their connections!
Hey anon!!! I appreciate that you want my perspective. :)
So yes I am very much of the mindset that Will created El as in: she is an "alter" of his. She's the "gatekeeper alter". She's in charge of the gate, and in charge of memories. She emerged right when he needed her to protect him.
I feel like Holly may also be another alter too... one of the child alters. It may also be possible that Erica is another alter too... Lets just say that if Dustin suddenly has a sister in ST5 then I'd be VERY suspicious.
What I am *starting* to speculate, however, is that there was a real Jane/Sarah. Will's "lost sister".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember all the allusions to Joyce's previous mental health issues? I'm quite positive she's already been through another child's disappearance... yet that child disappeared from her memory too. This child (likely) being Hopper's daughter.
I think that part of Will's trauma is losing his sister. He has survivor's guilt, just like we see from Hopper, Max, and Fred. It's a reoccurring theme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He blames himself for her death... but his memories of her are deeply repressed.
Tumblr media
I think these memories are subtly coming to light each time we see another sister emerge. Lets count how many! (I'm only excluding Nancy here because she was there since the very beginning)
Holly was not seen nor mentioned until after Will disappeared. Interesting...
Erica only appeared after season 1. No mention of her prior to that.
In ST2, El discovers she has a "lost sister", Kali.
We see the moment where Billy meets Max for the first time, his new step sister.
El becomes Will's sister after Hopper "dies".
When Fred is under Vecna's curse, a young girl (likely his sister) appears and shouts "murderer!"
In ST4 we see Henry's sister Alice.
Patty appears in TFS as Bob's adopted sister. No mention of her prior to the play.
I'm probably missing some too...
Something is going on with all the sisters here.
Then of course, the disappearance of sisters too!
Kali. No mention of her again.
Alice. What happened to her?
El during ST4.
Max.
Fred's sister (I'm assuming).
Patty... again... what happened to her?
and now (likely): Holly.

I think there are several problems with the theory that Mike and Will won't get together until the very end, but one of them is this idea that because it's the 80's they need to repress their feelings all season.
People acted on their feelings during this time. Not everyone was repressing being gay. There were plenty of gay people who were in relationships, they were just in secret. Or they were "roommates". Just because they are in a small, conservative town doesn't mean this didn't happen.
Not everyone represses their feelings. A lot of people snuck around and had hook ups even if they were married in heterosexual relationships. This idea that no one was acting on their feelings because they were scared during this time is a big generalization. Yes, people were scared. And yes, some people didn't act on it. But a lot of people did. They just did it in secret.
Besides this, from a storytelling point of view, we have already seen Mike and Will repress their feelings in S3. More Mike than Will. That was the whole point of that season. That Mike wasn't acting like himself. He was distancing himself from Will because he was scared. But by S4 we see him apologize for that, initiate most of their flirty moments, and openly check Will out (not to mention the way he's chosen to decorate). That boy isn't repressing shit anymore.
Will has never really repressed anything he's just tried to get over his feelings because he doesn't think he has a chance. But the second he realizes he does have a chance his attitude is going to change. Because he was all ready to be in a relationship with Mike in S3.
So I find it hard to believe that two people who are aware of their own feelings aren't going to act on them at some point, especially considering dragging that out would be frustrating from an audience standpoint. Not to mention how forward Mike has been about addressing his problems with Will this season. And I don't think that they are going to spend any time apart after they both acknowledged that they didn't like how distant they've become. For the record, I'm not suggesting it will only be the two of them all season. They will obviously interact with other people too and the show isn't just about this couple. But I don't think there will be distance between them. Because the one season where there was distance was the season Mike wasn't acting like himself and this issue was already addressed by Mike earlier in S4. He's not going to suddenly go back on this when he's had all this growth. The show isn't required to follow the formula that the main couple gets together at the very end. I know a lot of shows do this, but there is no indication they are following this particular trope and they have inverted a lot of other tropes. All of the endgame couples are pretty much together. Jopper had a lot of build up all series and is together now. Lumax is basically together. Jancy is the only couple I can see breaking up and then getting back together at the very end but this doesn't feel unsatisfying because we actually saw them as a couple.
So if the only couple that gets no screen time is the gay couple, there is a reason for this that has nothing to do with telling a realistic story for the time period. It's because they were afraid to show a gay couple. There is absolutely no reason not to show this relationship and from the story we have gotten so far, they will be.

Stranger things is great, bc all the characters are so compatible! Like just about any ship you throw at me I’ll be like, “mmm yes.”
Obviously there are the ones I go feral over:
Elumax (+dustin sometimes), lumax, Byler, jancy, jopper, sometimes henderclair
And the ones I enjoy
Elmax, Henderhop, byclair, bywheelclair, Stonathan, Steddie, ronance, jargyle, Joyce & Bob, just the party/teens being poly, etc.
Like ngl the only (popular) ships I really dislike are Mileven, Stancy, Billy & Steve (don’t remember what they’re called)
But also like I love them all as platonic besties? This is the only fandom I’ve ever been in that almost every single character has so much chemistry with so many others?
