perhaps something that always bothered me about people saying that narrative consequences aren鈥檛 a thing on the dsmp because of the multiple perspectives and that everyone鈥檚 a shade of grey is that. it鈥檚 a story. stories have morals and themes and messages, even dnd campaigns have these. it is not a situation in real life. if everything means nothing, it鈥檚 not a very good story, you know?
Narrative consequences are a thing on the Dream SMP.
Multiple perspectives and non black-and-white morality has no impact on that.
If you think narrative consequences just means morals or lessons, then yeah, that's not a thing really.
Narrative consequences however are just like consequences in general though with the expectation that you'll also have consequence for the emotions you generate in your audience as well as the direct in-universe consequence for an action.
This is commonly catharsis. If we watch a character inflict suffering on another character who has been made out to be sympathetic in any way, you can expect to see some sort of justice where they suffer some sort of defeat, they will have suffered a narrative consequence because they made the audience feel in a certain way and so you want to later pay it off with some relief.
You can also go against these conventions and deliberately doing that is evoking a different sort of emotion and telling a different kind of story with a different theme. This theme would be something about how bad things happen and the fact that there was no positive payoff - it is sending a message, a rather pessimistic but potentially also powerful one.
If a story is evoking a feeling in someone then they'll want to see how it develops. It has already become more than just a series of events, its become something with a narrative, and its going to say something. That fact that there are multiple writers and multiple stories means it can be a little messier but it doesn't mean its not a story.
PS. I just made this whole post up. I don't actually know the definition of narrative consequence and I cannot be bothered to look it up. I have no idea if narrative consequence relates to audience emotion at all. Or what is conventional with storytelling or what makes something a story. It's literally just me rambling, so it may be hideously inaccurate.

Different anon, but I felt like contributing a bit and pulling from empires smp. A large chunk of people鈥檚 audience in much of mcyt tends to be children, as much as I hate to say it. Scott talked about it a bit back, but especially when it ain鈥檛 intended to be a rp heavy series it can confuse people and especially children. It鈥檚 part of the reason that despite voicing Xornoth due to the heavy voice changer those kids likely to send hate to anyone playing a villain are too stupid to figure out who鈥檚 behind it. After all the hate much of the mcyt community has gone through it seems as though everyone is scared to play a villain, and no one can deny that larger creators can get away with more shit with less hate.
that鈥檚 not to say I wouldn鈥檛 adore if cc鈥檚 changed their names for characters or treated it more as dnd, since it鈥檚 pretty damn similar. I mean I was cheering when Shubble decided her characters name was Shrub and that degree of separation being added. I mean I play dnd and watch a lot of dnd campaigns, and as someone who was apart of both mcyt and dnd fandoms, there鈥檚 an undeniable difference in how they approach talking about characters.
Yeah when it's not intended to be rp heavy I honestly totally get it. And in the dsmps defense, it didn't mean to get rp heavy or at least it wasn't made with that intent.
But when these guys make something new that's also rp based it's like. Bro. Stop being scared. Go all in.
Like bearsmp. Correct me if I'm wrong but that was heavily rp based and was made with the intent of being rp based, yet for some reason everyone (or at least a majority) was still playing characters that shared their names and appearances.
And it wasn't a YouTube series or anything, it was livestreamed on Twitch.

Dsmp? Din鈥檛 see it coming, absolutely never would have guess ghat it would be the top option of ray-ray writings a writing blog for dsmp. (Btw im only teasing) and I can see some as whoopings occuring if you were to visit that world
ALSO HARRY POTTER?! I AM CURRENTLY HYPERFIXATING ON IT AND WELL IMA MALADAPTIVE DREAMER SO YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW THAT GOES I PASS HOURS MAKING THESE SCENES THAT WOULD HAPPEN WITH MY CHARACTER THERE AND YOU BET IM SAVING THOSE THAT DIED, IM DOING IT ahem yeah good choice
I don鈥檛 know much about the next two but stranger things? Heard it was a dangerous place lmao scary world so interesting choice. And yes to disney I want to see that Elsa magic up close I bet it would be absolutely beautiful or see Rapunzel鈥檚 magic hair
Hahahahahaha. Absolutely! Gotta protect the youngins haha!
Harry Potter is a huge fandom for me. I have been a fan since I was quite literally in the 4th grade. I would also save some of the ones that died, you can count on that from me 100%!
Stranger things is very dangerous which is why I said I鈥檇 probably die rather soon but it would be worth it hahaha. And Dimension 20 is a DnD series that has many shows and campaigns and it鈥檚 very good. And yes absolutely agree about Disney!!

Ok I'm gonna be a contrarian here for a second and point out one thing as a sort of defense for the CCs who are understandably also frustrated...
When were the times they promised lore stuff?
That's right, when people asked them.
And that's fair actually, people are naturally curious about where the lore is and of course they answer, but here's the thing... Sometimes, as artists and writers, we don't realize the gaps in time when we are toiling in the background and we could get excited, waiting to be able to share what we made then being completely unable to... THAT'S why they make promises they couldn't keep.
This happened to me in shit like DND where campaigns die out cause we were never able to get people together, same thing going on with DSMP where they try to get more and more people involved before nothing.
And that's the problem, they are forced to make promises to appease the growing anxiousness of the fanbase that it becomes a cycle of promises then disappointment then promises then disappointment. They feel the need to answer and say something when they aren't even in any position right now to do it. At LEAST Wilbur communicated his scheduling issues enough compared to everybody else.
I'll admit though, maybe it's the CCs' fault at first, maybe they should've never promised anything in the first place, and maybe, just maybe, they should've announced they are going on a hiatus way earlier on, maybe.
But I can't fault them for being excited and legitimately wanting to do stuff before it never pans out.
And I can't help but feel for their position. I kinda relate it to my own works which due to several factors I could not do on time, and how much I try to release something, preview something, but can't cause I wish to not spend all my time releasing half baked products. I've had campaigns die with stuff beyond my control and scheduling issues that left me unable to stop it from dying. Dream SMP is basically like that but in a larger scale.
In the end, I just feel bad for the CCs, not blame them. I understand that it is frustrating, and painful, to see them start joking about it now, but as somebody who could emphatize with their situations to a lesser extent, yeah.
I wish for better communication to us as an audience, but I fear they won't be able to communicate lore lulls like these when they themselves aren't aware it was still gonna happen. Though maybe yeah, they should've expected it.
i just remembered it but when wilbur said "there's always been gaps in lore, it took four months at some point" it irked me a bit because the reason people right now are asking for lore isn't because we demand lore, but because they literally promised us massive lore post-prison break...and then they didn't do said lore
yes, there's hiatuses, but the fandom was promised something they never delivered and now they make these little comments about people (albeit those asking in chat are annoying) asking for what they were promised
