"City of Angels" Fic Notes

CoA is done! This was a fun little ride. It ended up a bit longer than I predicted but this is the first fic in a while that didn’t become a runaway so I’ll take that. Actually nvm I just checked and I predicted this fic would be 15k. Oops. The share link will be up later tonight, but for now, here’s the fic notes!

Playlist:

My playlist for this one was less emotional stuff and more “LA sucks” songs, so it’s shorter, but honestly it worked really well. For me, a playlist is something that either 1) helps with the mood/ideas while I’m writing or 2) something that makes me WANT to write when I hear it because I tie it to those ideas, so the LA songs actually worked really well even where they were less relevant. The emotional songs are all centered around the breakup/conflict at the beginning, but the playlist still worked.

Epilogue Life:

For a while, Adora and Catra are infuriatingly vague to the press about each other. They’ll go to events together and act like a couple, telling stories and clearly knowing each other well, but they just get all mysterious when asked questions. Eventually, after many months of dating, they’re a bit more willing to talk about their relationship. At that point they confirm that they are dating and later admit that they went to the same acting school, having known each other since they were kids. It takes a long time — “coincidentally” shortly after Catra’s career really solidifies her as someone to watch for years to come — before it comes out that they were foster kids with the same guardian who trained them in acting. They basically just say “yeah, she was our teacher so it was kind of like being in class 24/7” and don’t comment on it further. They (well, Catra at least) would love to dig into Weaver, but saying anything bad about Weaver is basically signing a ticket to have her try to sell every one of their secrets she knows. The closest they get is when someone bothers Catra about the “mutual guardian” thing with her then-fiancée and she basically snaps “that was not a family, that was a boarding school. We were not her children or siblings” and the clip ends up online. Mysteriously, they never hear anything from Weaver in retribution, but DT soon after stops having a favor owed to them at two different tabloids.

Adora and Catra both settle into each other’s places and lives. They keep calling their places “Catra’s apartment” and “Adora’s house” for a long time because each is definitely more owned by one of them (both legally and practically), but in daily life it really has morphed into the apartment in the city and the private house passed the edges of town. Their relationship rekindles beyond where it used to be and, despite them never really publicly “clarifying” their relationship once they’re on the same page about being traditional girlfriends, everybody treats them as a couple up until the point where they get married and become wives instead.

For a while Adora remains more famous/ubiquitous than Catra, but her career peters down over time while Catra diversifies and has such a range she becomes one of the go-to magicats in Hollywood. Adora is very happy with her moderate success and wildly successful wife, though. I don’t remember if I kept the “joke speculation” about this in the fic, but eventually Adora leaves show business to direct a small children’s theater group with the love and warmth she was missing in her own education. She loves it. She loves working with the kids, she loves the low stakes of community plays, and — as referenced in the fic — she loves stage acting.

Catra keeps up in Hollywood all the way until she’s a gray fox, always attending her award shows with her wife on her arm, which is pretty much the only time Adora steps back into the limelight. Adora had her fun, but her own mental health does better in her new career path. It barely pays, but that’s what Catra and Adora’s old investments/savings are for. Occasionally one of her kids really goes down the Hollywood path and Adora does a little networking for them.

Chapter 1:

⦁ Neck kissing is enough of a thing for Adora that it was a total red flag that it wasn’t doing it for her and I find that hilarious.

⦁ Catra’s reputation for calling shit out really bit her as soon as the public picked up on her interaction with Adora. The theory Adora was secretly racist was slowly gaining some traction within Catra’s fanbase, as well as outside of it when that seemed more scandalous — ie, profitable to talk about — to gossipers/tabloids. Catra had been avoiding Adora for years as she built herself up, but when that started spreading, she reached out for Adora’s sake as much as hers. Being friends with some of Adora’s friends, all the stories she has heard seemed to show Adora as she remembered her and not some egomonster twisted by fame, but even starting to wonder if the Adora she loved still existed and their relationship could be repaired, she stayed away until she had a name of her own to stand on. Partly because of pride and partly, yes, because of the stupid superstition.

⦁ Catra was really trying to puff herself up for the encounter, scared of Adora getting under her skin again, but the end of it really threw her off. She made the dig about Adora’s talent and realized — at least a bit — how much it hurt from the way she retreated, and then Adora backed down which she doesn’t do, and then she said she missed her and left. It was the first step to Catra really starting to consider her again.

⦁ When I went to write the first chapter end note, I realized you could easily consider DITM, ASGNE, and SaD “celebrity” fics, not to mention stuff like 5GR that brushes up against fame in some other way, or even SLAS with the socialite aspect. I only really consider DITM and maybe ASGNE celebrity AUs, though, with the others just dealing with some level of fame or notoriety in their specific area (cosplay, sports, etc).

⦁ I was supposed to do a whole fic extra about this, but I didn’t, so I’m just going to whack it up as a block of text here regarding Adora’s reputation and public perception: Adora came out of nowhere and played a kind of a-typical character to be the lead of an action series. She was so similar to her character and dorky in interviews that she immediately grew a very attached fanbase. You know that gif of Jennifer Lawrence looking at Anne Hatheway at the Oscars “like she’s a unicorn” because she’s fangirling herself that everybody reblogged back in 2014 or whatever? Yeah, that exact gif exists of Adora and was kind of the vibe that inspired her public perception here. That and the girl who played April Ludgate saying weird shit in interviews. Adora seems ~quirky and relatable and down to Earth~ (AKA doesn’t know how to cultivate a public personality or censor herself) so she gets a lot of fans pretty quickly. She has this cocky thing that works for lesbians and this “girl next door” vibe that works on everybody else, so she keeps getting “typecast” in those roles because that’s what everyone wants to see her in and her fans will follow her from movie to movie without hesitation when those similarities are there. Of course, the truth is taking on a totally different character is difficult for her, but between auditions for other stuff not working out and more of that fair calling for her, she has been legitimately typecast at this point. She’s way too honest in interviews and it works out for her. Everybody feels connected to her despite how there are sides of herself — the fragile ones — she never lets anyone see, and she’s a household name with her face synonymous with an entire franchise.

Chapter 2:

⦁ Perfuma was there to make sure they didn’t end up hooking up in the bathroom as much as she was standing guard, it’s just that no one ever said that to Adora. Perfuma was supportive of them reconciling now she was getting to know Catra better, but she thought that just might be counterproductive to it.

Chapter 3:

⦁ Catra knew there was a chance of them meeting at the party since she closely associates Randor’s name with Adora. She assumed Adora wouldn’t happen to be on the other side of the country to come to the party, but it was in the back of her mind as a possibility, so she wasn’t that surprised when Adora showed up. Mostly she was grateful for someone she could seem like she was engaging with socially while really she could just relax.

⦁ I rarely put Catra in skirts but in this case it was insurance to make sure her tuck never showed or anything.

⦁ Imitation is part of my larger universe of fics, with it being one of Catra’s movies that she won an Oscar for in DITM. Gunmetal was one of her movies in that fic, and later one of Sea Hawk’s in ASGNE (he was also in it in DITM), and in this fic it’s the third of Adora’s trilogy of movies.

⦁ Catra’s name being “Beth” in her breakout role is once again a reference to the “her real name is Elizabeth” joke from crew.

⦁ Alright the premise of Adora’s breakout trilogy is basically you have a classic action guy who’s secretly a spy and he’s in love with his next-door-neighbor (Adora) who he greets in the hallway every morning. And then in the first ten minutes of the movie he goes missing, and Adora accidentally witnesses suspicious activity at his place and then he never comes out to greet her in the mornings anymore and it starts her down this track of investigating for herself and finding his secret spy gear and going on a mission to rescue him without any knowledge of the spy organization he actually worked for. The whole movie there’s this assumption by the audience that she loves him back and that’s why she’s going to these lengths. She talks with another character about how they’ve known each other since high school and you think oh when she rescues him there will be a confession, and then she does rescue him and, when he’s finally in the movie again after an hour and 42 minutes (at no point was he shown before that so the viewer is just as unsure as Adora whether he’s still alive), it’s revealed she was his babysitter back in the day (she’s a few years older) and she sees him like a younger brother and has no connection to him like that, on top of being a lesbian with a girlfriend he didn’t know about because it turns out he really didn’t know that much about her at all having only had some conversations with her in the hall after they happened to move into the same building after going to different colleges. It’s partially a joke and partially a commentary, although not as progressive as it’s going for considering they casted a 20-year-old for the female lead and an almost 30-year-old for the male despite him supposedly being younger because in Hollywood women HAVE to be young and attractive. It does solidify Adora’s character though, because she went through all of this just for a guy she once knew as a sweet kid and that she was worried about. The sequels are set up by his spy agency inviting her to join them at the end of the first movie since she proved herself by rescuing one of their own. It’s a good button on the end of a single movie and was also a great setup for sequels when they were greenlit. The last two movies have an overarching story connection with the agency turning out to be corrupt and his capture was an inside job, though they can be viewed individually. He’s, once again, barely in the movies and has been demoted to deskwork (which does end up giving him a critical moment where he witnesses something at the office that blows the corruption open, so he’s still important but not the focus). Adora’s struggles with balancing her secret life with her girlfriend are a sideplot in the sequel and in part III they’ve broken up due to Adora being a shitty girlfriend (big oof, Superzero parallel there but it also hit too close to home for in-universe Adora) and she’s gets a new love interest in the form of a sidekick. At the end they basically found their own agency together after taking down her old one. Lesbians love the power dream. In the first movie (and in later movies, but especially at first where she isn’t a part of this world) the character Adora is playing is basically… herself, but with action hero skills, which is why she was cast, because basically as soon as the team saw her audition they were like. That’s the girl. That’s who we’re trying to get someone to play and that just is her. The movie ended up being successful enough that it spawned a graphic novel followed by a comic book series which ran for years and kind of went off the rails into cloning and shit. Typical comic weirdness tbh, but the technology in the comic is noticeably more futuristic (and impossible) than that in the movies. It’s almost like the comics are set 60 years later.

⦁ Catra started blockers and hormones younger than… like 99% of trans people. Part of there being less transphobia means it’s easier to realize your identity and a Lot easier to get access to healthcare, so her natural voice isn’t deep or anything, but when Adora talks about it getting rough that’s Catra letting go of the training she has done to keep it controlled, not just in pitch, but also in cadence.

Chapter 4:

⦁ The tabloid website description is based off my (likely inaccurate) memories of the one time I stumbled into an article on the extremely trashy Perez Hilton gossip magazine website. My memories of it are that they were being truly disgusting about how a like, 16 year old Disney actress was dressed.

⦁ Being that this is a transphobia lite AU, name/gender change process stuff is better and more effective. Catra got her birth certificate and everything updated at a very young age, so unless someone wanted to dig specifically into name change orders from the county she grew up in the year she did it, it would be very hard to find out she used to have a different legal name or gender.

Chapter 5:

⦁ There’s a lot of talk about Catra being “more” talented, and while it’s right, it’s relative. Adora wasn’t cut out to be a great actress. She has honed the skill until she was capable of doing it, but Catra is more naturally inclined towards it and, having had just as much time to hone her skill, is still better. That doesn’t make Adora untalented, it just means she’s not naturally inclined to acting and she was set up to a losing game when Weaver made sure that was the measure by which she valued them and taught them to value themselves. Of course, Weaver still views Catra as mediocre (because she “doesn’t apply herself” and “surfs on talent without honing her skill”) and she views Adora as having the dedication, making her more favorable, but not having enough because otherwise she would perform better than the “lazy” Catra. She also just views Adora more favorably because 1) she does well at stage-acting, an art Weaver’s shitty intellectualism views as superior (in the way that people writing Adora’s biographies in twenty years will say she was even greater than anyone ever knew because she was a good stage actress too), and 2) talent or not, Adora got more roles, and more results meant she was clearly better. Whatever Adora’s technical faults, Catra’s sour attitude was clearly holding her back. If Catra would “just change” then she could finally live up to her potential, and thus she must be personally spiting Weaver by holding back. Weaver’s view of the world is very self-centered.

⦁ Part of the reason Catra said “never again” despite liking the dance was the possibility of them being seen. It would be easy for the tabloids to paint her as a toy or somehow to diminish her worth with it. The rest was that while it was hot, it could become problematic behavior if it were in a pattern — and maybe behavior in line with the selfish, attention-hungry version of Adora she built up in her head when they broke up.

Chapter 6:

⦁ Catra sends Adora that smile after mentioning sleeping in a limo because she’s thinking about how they almost hooked up in the car, it just kind of went over Adora’s head.

⦁ Alright, hybrids and makeup. So far mentions of Catra’s makeup in others’ fics where she’s “supposed” to be human are the number one immersion breaker for me in those (because I just imagine Catra as a magicat regardless) but I do think hybrids could/would wear it. It varies by species obviously (lizardfolk essentially have scale paint they can wear and claw polish/strains, but nothing else that looks traditional beauty products), but a lot of the hybrids could wear some level of the typical stuff. There’s kind of three camps on Catra’s appearance (full fluff, general fluff but not on some places like faces and hands, or no fur just skin). Obviously in the third she can wear all regular beauty products, but it’s noncanonical and not my usual interpretation. I guess I’m somewhere in between them, but either way the skin just around her eyes could probably take fairly traditional products, and she could wear things like blush if there were a special style of product for it that doesn’t exist in our world to accommodate fluffy cheeks. As such, I think wearing lipstick or eyeliner isn’t out of the question for Catra ever, but things like eye shadow and blush get more iffy depending on your interpretation, and foundation is pretty far out there. All that “possible hybrid products” stuff established, Perfuma’s line has a lot of stuff like that included and that’s part of why Catra was talking about the differences in formula for their different kinds of skin. And if you always picture her hairless then I suppose she was just talking about the colors on different skintones to you.

⦁ I had a whole thing I cut out from this chapter about how Catra transitioned under Weaver but I deleted it for the transphobia. I’m going to cover it here, but like, trigger warning. Basically, context matters a lot, so stuff that’s just problematic for reasons unrelated to transphobia in their world is awful in ours. With it being socially acceptable, Weaver didn’t have a lot of reason to say no to Catra’s transition other than it being expensive, which led to things like Catra borrowing Adora’s clothes until she had outgrown the ones she already had and Weaver would let her buy new ones from the right department now she had to spend the money anyway (did they look much different than the ones she already had since neither of them are super femme? No. Did they feel better? Yes). Adora mentions Catra doing HRT young, which was absolutely what Catra wanted, but the part I cut out was that this was one of her few choices that Weaver fully supported her in. Support is kind of a bad word, though, because the reason she approved was she thought that Catra needed to transition as early as possible if she was going to do it because otherwise she might not fit beauty standards and not get any parts. Growing up ugly might as well be every pageant mom’s worst fear and has little to do with gender in-universe, but IRL this is just horrible. There’s so many people who have thought that they couldn’t/shouldn’t transition because it was “too late” and I didn’t want to include anything like it in the fic. I’m only including it here because I’ve previously thought about how controlling Weaver would be in a situation where either of them transitions (in AUs or canon) so I had to think about what would lead her to supporting it and keeping it “a secret” in this AU over the years of Catra’s fame. At this point revealing Catra is trans wouldn’t gain Weaver anything other than making Catra uncomfortable about strangers knowing her deadname or just thinking about her genitals at all (I’ll never forget that Laverne Cox interview where the interviewer thought for some reason they could/should ask about if she had bottom surgery and she just had to laugh it off and say “I’m very happy with the situation down there” without clarifying).

⦁ Regarding timing, my trans headcanons for them fall in line with my sexuality headcanons for them. Catra knows and falls young, but Adora takes a lot longer and might need a big push. In the case of transitioning, Catra realizes very young she’s a girl and is insistent on the fact no matter what others try to tell her. Adora tries to push through it and doesn’t understand why she can’t live up to macho standards or whatever (or never feels like she is, anyway) until eventually enough shit piles on and the realization breaks that she never wanted that set of standards anyway. She would absolutely be the one to be like “Well I’m just Aware™️ of toxic masculinity because I listen to my female friends so much and that’s why everything feels wrong, no need to question the masculine part tho!” with her blinders on full force.

Chapter 7:

⦁ Adora is continually baffled by Catra’s ability to not measure things or use a recipe.

⦁ Entrapta is primarily a VFX and CGI artist in this verse but not a force on Earth could stop her from hacking sometimes.

⦁ Part of the reason Catra wanted the site down was for Adora’s sake. She knows the joke bothers her too.

⦁ Chapters 5, 6, and 7 are interesting because they all contain a scene that was originally in one of the others. They saw a lot of rearranging, which is the main reason I took three days before posting chapters 4 and 5 as I got 5/6/7 settled. I’m ordering this by how things originally started and putting where they ended up in parenthesis. Originally, Chapter 5 had the morning after scene (CH5), an Instagram scene (deleted, I’ll explain in a sec), the the aquarium scene (CH6), photoshoot scene (CH6), and the confession scene (CH6). Then the fic rolled right into the final chapter, 6, with the talk show (CH7) and Clawdeen scenes (CH7). More stuff from the final epilogue was planned to come after but by then I had new ideas and ended up inserting two new chapters to accommodate them. The cut “Instagram” scene featured Adora seeing Catra with the Star siblings on Jewel’s Instagram story and wondering about where things stood with her and Tali. She tried to focus on her shoot, but that night Catra texted her for a booty call and Adora accepted. It gave Adora some confidence that Catra was coming to her when Tali was more convenient, but she also didn’t know if Catra had just struck out. The truth was that being around someone she used to hook up with got Catra thinking down those lines again (horny) so she called Adora up. This felt like too early or them to hook up again, though, and writing that scene got me thinking about the dynamic between all three of them, which gave me the idea for the club dance scenes. When I initially wrote them, they opened chapter 6 following the confession scene and were really different. It didn’t fit with them already being “official,” even if it was casual. I didn’t want to have two scenes centered around the Tali thing either since it really wasn’t a big deal in their lives, so I cut the earlier Instagram scene in favor of the dancing and moved it to before the confession by moving the photoshoot and confession back to chapter 6. I also wrote the scene in Catra’s kitchen at that time (originally opening CH6) but moved it back because (conversely) it didn’t fit with them not being together yet. That’s when Chapter 6 took it’s final form in the fic. I changed the concept of Chapter 7 to go from “wrap up/epilogue” to “public interacting with their relationship” with epilogue following in Chapter 8. I moved the kitchen scene in to 7 and paired it with the talk show and Clawdeen scenes for the final version in the fic. Whenever I moved a scene, it needed rewriting to fit within the tone of their relationship in its new place in the timeline, but sometimes that was the entire reason I moved scenes. The club/dance scenes did not feel like they took place when their relationship was confirmed, so I moved them back to before it. The scene in Catra’s kitchen didn’t feel like it took place before they were confirmed because Adora should have been freaking out about the implications of people thinking they were dating a lot more, so I moved it after. All these moves still required tweaks, but I think everything flows way better where it is now and the chapters (5, 6, 7, and 8) are all decent lengths rather than the final two chapters turning out to be behemoths. After writing this note, I realized I had to go back and rearrange bullet points in my fic notes too since the relevant scenes had moved LOL

Chapter 8:

⦁ The reason Adora’s house is so far out is because that’s what it takes to get a quiet neighborhood where no one will rat her out to the press. Some of her neighbors recognize her, but so far everyone has been chill.

⦁ I’m putting it here because I kept waiting to squeeze it into the fic and I never did so this is my last chance: Weaver’s “backstory” in this is that she wanted to be a Hollywood star and thought she had gotten her big break when she was cast in a soap opera that showed promise. Season one was so bad it crashed hard and almost sabotaged the careers of anyone associated it. Still, hate watching numbers are still numbers, so it came back for a second season that had such low viewership numbers (since it wasn’t even interesting enough for hate watching really and that kind of thing always has a limit) that it was canceled halfway through and the rest of the filmed episodes never aired. Weaver pretty much never got cast in anything again. When she started to age, she “accepted” it was over since Hollywood likes young and beautiful women. She became an acting teacher, and after one of the children from her first set of classes went on to get a successful role, Weaver saw the dollar signs and the chance to maybe grasp at a fraction of the fame she wanted. She decided to foster two potential cash cows and try to raise them up with her as their stage manager so she can directly attribute their success to her (this was as important to her from a personal vindication standpoint as it was a financial one) and finally say that she clearly had what it took to make it in Hollywood since she could steer others through it, she just got unlucky guys :(

⦁ Before I wrote anything for this AU I predicted it would be 5 chapters and 15k, but by the time I went to post it that... was obviously wrong and I said 6 chapters at 30k. It ended up at 38k and honestly at this point I'm calling that win with my history.

⦁ Okay this AU. is interesting. Normally I would put an “Original Outline” at the end of the chapter summary but this one is really brief so I’m just tacking it onto Chapter 8. The idea for this AU came when I was listening to City Of Angels and went “the Catradora vibes are so here,” so I put it on my possible AUs list as just “City of Angels AU” and moved on, waiting for that idea to catch. A few months later (back in February or March probably?) I randomly got the idea for — essentially — chapter 4. I outlined the award show scene with the stupid golden touch joke, them talking on their date (though when I outlined it the conversation had no context) and then them in the car and going home together after “some party.” I had other fics at the time that I was working on, so it had to wait in line, but it was really stupid and fun. I didn’t have much overarching planning ahead of time, so there’s not much to go over other than stuff like the changes around Chapter 5, 6, and 7, but I will say the old plan was for the stuff I labeled as CH5 to, well, be in chapter 5 and then the final chapter would be award show stuff and them at a party together. As I was writing I watched Eddy Burbank’s video on the death of late night TV and added the interview scene (I find those a lot of fun anyway so it was kind of glaring that one was missing in hindsight) and then the Clawdeen scene just kind of happened and led to other changes. The final scene of the fic was outlined before all the major changes that added two more chapters, but it just added to the roster of scenes that required the buffing out.

Upcoming:

So. Here’s the thing. I kind of promised I wouldn’t do something a long time ago and like, I’ve dabbled adjacent to it, but now we’re. we’re just doing the damn thing. So the next AU is called Trade Today For Tomorrow. And it’s going to be up like, in the next day or two probably. Because I’m insane. I wrote over 7000 words in one day. Actually I did something similar for this project, I had like two 6k~ days. I’m in my unhinged era.

an AU where the reader played drums for Harry during the first half of Love on Tour in 2021 and they ended up in a secret relationship but things went south after that leg of tour finished bc she wanted to pursue music on her own, while he has his own busy schedule to attend to, so they called it quits to avoid future complications.

Her solo career starts taking off and everything’s going well— she has performances coming up, an album that just dropped, interviews waiting— and she’s managed to keep their past relationship under wraps like they agreed they would, but things take a turn when Harry releases hs3 with songs she can tell are about her. She shrugs most of it off, but what tips the scale is that he ends up releasing a deluxe version with Baby Honey and Complicated Freak as bonus tracks (in this AU, he wrote them about her after they broke up instead of in 2017) and the trivial punches aimed at her in the songs are what make her act on her emotions.

She knows how petty he can be, which is one of their shared traits that would sometimes cause a clash when they were together, so in turn, she releases one of the songs she wrote about him as a single (which she had planned to keep private, but he threw the first punch so fair is fair) and basically the song is the female version of 5sos’s English Love Affair. And in the lyrics, there’s obvious digs that confirm they had a relationship together, so everything’s out in the open now.

Aside from the revealing title, the lyrics about being on stage, his signature rings, and the line about making her swear to keep their relationship a secret being pretty telling to the public, the references she makes to some of the songs in his new album (the wine lyric related to Grapejuice, calling him “honey” as a nod to Baby Honey) just about confirms all the speculation that could rise up. After that unsuccessful (and frankly, pretty violent) phone call, their managers end up being the ones that strike up a compromise pertaining to the messy press situation at hand. They order both of them to get together privately and talk this out, because fighting will get them nowhere and fix nothing. After they resolve their differences, they should try to evade any questions about their relationship as much as possible in the media, and if they have no choice but to answer, they should regard each other with neutrality and respect. Y/N and Harry agree, and they settle to meet at his place in London since she’s traveling there the following week to do some promo.

The tension and feelings are running high from the second she sets foot in his house. They regard one another as calmly and cordially as they can, with Harry welcoming her in, offering her a drink, and telling her to get comfortable. However, it’s difficult for her to feel at ease in a place that holds so many heavy memories. After some awkward small talk and pained silences, she takes it upon herself to drop all formalities and steer the conversation towards what they’re both avoiding.

As they dive into all the rocky details of their relationship, both the unresolved issues and the heartfelt passionate moments neither of them can forget, things get heated once again. They’re all but yelling and screaming at one another, while also trying to hide how hurt both of them truly feel; despite whatever front they put up, they can’t deny that having to separate due to circumstance was more hurtful than either would care to admit. Both of them had dreams they wanted to fulfill, and being torn apart by those hopes caused a deep wound that neither had ever really healed from. Sacrificing love for ambition is a choice no one should ever have to make.

Y/N winds up crying, and seeing her in such a sad state drains any resentment Harry could ever possibly hold towards her. He comforts her and apologizes for the way he’s acted, both personally and within his career, and she returns the sentiment. And then in a moment of vulnerability and truceful clarity, they kiss.

They do more than kiss, actually. More than once. In different places and on various surfaces, with whispered love confessions strewn amidst dirty moans and desperate whines.

And after they’re done and they’re laying there sweaty, panting, and tangled in their emotions, there’s at least one thing they can both agree on with absolute certainty: they’re about to give their managers a run for their money all over again.

Uuuuh there is a lot to unpack about Goretzka but he is extremely private with his personal life so it's all rumors without receipts and mainly based on speculation, basically like a "friend of a friend told me that", with that being said last thing I read was that he got his mistress pregnant and that his girlfriend accepted to continue the relationship with him, it's a very crazy thing to believe without proof, but I think he does cheat maybe not all the way but the liking pictures kinda gives you the idea that he likes seeing the other way from time to time? given that angela's in sm*sh & has brought st*rkid (further referred to as sk) into the fandom - i just want to point out some similarities as a fan of both

context: in sk, lauren & joey (L&J) were a couple of the original members who had insane chemistry - think c&s in early squad era content. in bts of shows/general sk media, they were always shipped and stood together, generally acted like how c&s are currently - closer friends than the rest of the ensemble, but not outright saying that they were dating.

iirc, there was a lot of speculation on why they were living together, bc they were posting a lot of content where it looked like they were a couple but also never confirmed anything. they were private about their dating life for years until J posted their engagement (https://www.instagram.com/p/CC37F8EnlJg/?hl=en) like 3 years ago. this is the engagement josh refers to in his bit during the sk/sm tntl crossover

L even adopted a dog and always talked about being the dog's mom, and over time posting posts abt her dog with captions like "Mom and Dad can’t afford those vet bills" as kind of a soft launch!

i find it cute that it seems like the whole r*chpez journey is happening again but with c&s! i'm hoping for more respect within the fandom (l&j had a lot of toxic shippers in the past - i wouldn't wish that on anybody, speculated dating or not) than what l&j had to go through though.

I’ve also been reading the background of L&J since anon last mentioned awhile ago and yeah it really is similar with Shourtney a lot!

There were a toxic shippers back around 2021/2022 but it has been taken care now. Basically there were a Discord server that created to discuss about them but it got toxic so much and gone into stalking territory too. It finally got reported and banned around mid 2022. Also definitely related to what Courtney mentioned on her Q&A when she got asked if Shourtney shipper annoy you or not. She answered that not really except when they cyberstalk you.

As a person who, back in October, wanted to leave the fandom initially and then changed their mind, how do you feel about the situation now you've had a few months to think about it?

I think there was a huge pressure on people to make a decision immediately and stick with it. You're one of the very few people (I've seen) who decided to leave and then came back on the same account, actually speaking about why they changed their mind.

Leaving out any speculation about the potential court case, strictly speaking about what was confirmed, were you able to distance yourself from the fandom a bit more and if so, did that change your perception of the situation and the betrayal you felt?

hellooooo - yeah sure thing i really don't mind sharing my thoughts 😁 i'll put it under the cut so people can ignore it if they don't wanna get into this. apologies in advance it turned into a massive essay haha ~

100% taking time away to really think over everything contributed maaaassively towards how i feel currently. i agree i think initially a lot of people felt like they had to make a permanent choice, and maybe some people have changed their mind since but haven't felt confident enough to return or vice versa...

when a situation is really emotional and stressful like it was back then, a lot of thoughts and decisions are made purely in the present without much thought for the future. that's just human nature - especially if you're of the nd variety and struggle with things like decision making, emotional regulation, etc. that's why i always try really hard to choose my words carefully when expressing myself but my emotional regulation is fucking awful so i 100% have a tendency to have initial reactions that i'm not proud of, say things i don't mean, etc

me personally, i've gotten to a point in my life where i feel absolutely no shame or embarrassment in turning around and saying 'i know i said this a while ago but over time i came to change my mind so either i take it back or i'm changing my viewpoint'.

i believe i mentioned back then when everything went down that a lot of my disappointment and betrayal had a lot to do with myself. because i was one of the people that initially blindly defended dream - i had full confidence he wouldn't engage in private conversations with fans, especially using his main accounts, because dream is a smart guy so surely he wouldn't do something so stupid? (at the end of the day he's a young white male who rose to fame with unimaginable speed...) so when shit hit the fan and he came forward to say that he did have private conversations with fans, i was less disappointed in him and way more disappointed in myself.

that's a big part of why i think i was able to come back, because i left not just because i didn't think i could support dream again, but because i knew i needed to re-evaluate myself and my attachment to these creators, and bring myself back down to earth like 'hey! i know you love these guys but don't forget you don't actually know them! don't ever place love above morals! your morality should not be conditional based on who is involved in a situation!'

that's basically what i spent my time focusing on - i actually ended up detaching myself from the other fandom i was in at the time too, because i wanted to change really badly. i turned off all notifications, i stopped checking things religiously, i stopped watching streams and videos, etc. i spent a whole month just living my life, and working on my priorities, and i think it was exactly what i needed. because yes i came back, but i'm here with a much much healthier perspective than before.

so i came back to support them, but i'm basically doing so in a way that does not cost me anything financially nor mentally. i still do not have any of their twitter notifications on, i don't have their youtube or tiktok notifications on, i also use twitch prime to sub to george and no longer sub with actual money, i don't buy any merch, i don't stay up for streams if i know i've got somewhere to be the next day and i need sleep. i basically am in a place now where they are no longer the priority that they used to be. they are just these little dudes that i enjoy watching when i'm online and there happens to be content 😊

in regards to the situation itself - i will be honest, i haven't kept up massively. it may be ignorant of me, but as far as i'm aware there's really not much information available out there as is, so i'm going to believe they are - as they rightfully should - taking care of it all behind the scenes. i suppose i still don't fully know what to believe, but i've gotten past it now. there's still a part of me that feels disappointment towards dream, and i think that's okay - it serves as a reminder that i can't forget my priorities in life. i still am fond of him, i suppose not nearly as much as before because i don't see him in the same way anymore - but enough that i am able to enjoy his content again and continue being in this community.

this community has been like a lifeline for me for a very, very long time. and i think i would have come back even if i felt nothing for dream anymore, because at the end of the day, this community is us, made by us, kept active by us, and i can enjoy plenty of things with you guys without relying on dream to be my reason to stay 😁

ughhhh where do i begin on this. first of all i more or less agree with everything adam says here. i already kinda mentioned this situation in passing; this is a really weird case and the public speculation is not helping. the thing that this really hinges on is i have no way of knowing whether or not the messages are even real. the idea that the origin of these messages is like some fucking 4chan thread and not the victim or someone close to them is first off incredibly dodgy to me. the fact that the victim in this case is also maintaining that the messages were taking out of context and that they don't want to be seen as a "victim" is also troubling.

i will say first and foremost if the messages ARE real, which neither party has denied that they are, then it's fucking wrong full stop like it's textbook grooming. at best it's still a wildly inappropriate interaction to have with a minor. like this is a crime. this is probably going to sound a little harsh but as someone who experienced very similar shit when i was around their age you really, genuinely don't realize how fucked up it is until you're your groomer's age and you realize that you would never have done shit like that yourself and what they were doing is objectively wrong. lots of teenagers conceptualize themselves as being at an adult level but looking back it's just not fucking true. you do not have the same cumulative knowledge and social awareness to consent to these kinds of interactions when you're 14 as you do when you're 21. i want to respect lavags' point of view but i also don't feel like it's... applicable do you know what i mean? to give some of my perspective, when i was a 12 - 14 year old girl i had an older "friend" who was like, somewhere between 17 and 20 i dont really remember. he would talk to me in private about his kinks and the hentai he liked to read and shit like that. in the moment you believe that you are peers, but the fact is that you are not. im 20 now i can barely comprehend even maintaining a serious friendship with someone who hasn't even graduated high school yet. in my honest opinion to have a sexual relationship with someone that much younger is completely unthinkable unless you're a pedophile. i said that i think that even a relationship between someone who's like 19 and someone who's 16 is inappropriate. and my reasoning for that is yeah a lot of people will make the argument that the chronological age difference isnt that much and yeah sure i guess but you're also in completely different stages of your life. one of you drives, has a job, and goes partying and one of you is in high school and, studying for their algebra final and still has to ask their mom permission to go to the grocery store. you're not even in the same space regularly. like what do you have in common? (ntm that only one of you is a legal adult) i've joked that people aged 18 - 21 are basically glorified teenagers but still what i said applies. i wouldnt have dated a 16 year old when i was 19 and i wouldnt have done whatever the fuck this is at ava's age. i'm still hesitant to call myself a grooming victim because i was never like pressured into sending nudes and i never got raped, it's definitely a heavy term with heavy connotations so i can understand why lavags doesn't want to be described that way but to be honest again if all of this is true then i really think it's a matter of time until he puts together how fucked up this is.

in any case again if it's true i'm glad this has come out but still like adam mentions the anti-trans brigade is having a field day with this. i think back to like sunnyv2 and whoever the fuck speculating on how Dangerous ava was to have around on the basis of "trans bad". in the moment even though i really do not fuckinglike jimmy at all i was glad at least that he stood up for her in the face of at the time baseless transmisogynistic accusations. obviously now i'm kinda anticipating that that entire crowd feels vindicated now but still it's like. they care more about what ava is than what she did. a lot of these same people even are the ones who were quick to shit on tana mongeau when she accused cody ko, with ample evidence, of statutory rape. and especially like given that real minors have been hurt here it's beyond frustrating to see people brush past that to instead jump to "i was right about trans women". the space is obviously teeming with anti-trans vitriol rn which is not only the wrong fucking reaction to have it's also just like a wildly inappropriate response to have. a child was groomed. can we focus on that? how about the fact that this seems to be a recurring theme with youtubers? like i said i really cant help but feel frustrated and hopeless whenever someone who happens to be gay / transgender does something fucked up and then it's the rest of us who are normal fucking people who are caught in the crossfire and are placed in a position where we have to basically defend our honor from something that someone else did. and again just for the record you're not going to make any progress trying to convince someone who believes all transgender people are satanic pedophiles that you're a normal decent human being, trying to "debate" these "people" is a waste of time, it's just fucking exhausting seeing again and again i think i kind of hoped we'd be past this stage by now when i was a kid

I sent the original ask about the nyt article and I just wanted to apologize for upsetting you and missing the mark there. I meant no offense. I did read the article before I sent that ask and upon reflection, as a gay woman, I think I was triggered by the notion of "speculation." I was forced out against my will and before I was ready years ago in college because of rumors, so that's the lens with which I read the article. and that's also why I thought the nyt was in the wrong and deserving of the critique, which was a knee jerk reaction on my part. the nyt isn't staffed by the same people who wrote lists of why they "knew" I was gay in college on facebook, but it felt similar and I apologize for projecting.

I'm not in the Taylor 'fandom,' so to speak, so all I knew about was her music, the general discussions in mainstream media, and her Vogue interview where she said that she only recently learned she could support a community "she isn't part of" which is why I asked. clearly, my own lived experiences got in the way of me reading the article critically. I genuinely just didn't realize everything that's happened, and I meant no offense or ill-will. betrayal is painful and I'm truly so sorry that you've had to feel this way about someone you've been a fan of for so long.

i deeply appreciate this follow up message, this is actually probably going to make me cry rn tbh.

i’m sorry that something like that happened to you and i can certainly appreciate how traumatizing it can to be to be forced to publicly confront ur sexuality before ur ready.

my emotions on this have been heightened for the past 24 hours and i don’t mean to be aggressive towards members of my own community that may be feeling other things in the wake of these articles.

i think what’s important with the t*ylor sw*ft stuff is remembering that she’s a public figure, whereas you were and are not. most of the things we know abt her are released by her and her team—lyrics, biographical info, who she’s seen with, who she talks abt, what she wears, where she goes. she’s a brand and she markets that brand with intention. and it’s just my own belief that if she doesn’t want to be perceived as gay or gay-adjacent or whatever, then she should stop presenting herself in that way and referencing so much of what’s important to queer fans. this would be the equivalent of me wearing a carabiner on my belt loop every day to the coffee shop and then getting offended when woman comes up to me to ask me on a date, you know? it’s hurtful to be used for monetary gain and then vilified for it. people were invading our privacy and private life and making it public in a way that you didn’t and wouldnt.

Pol!Jon: A Study in Nonsense

I was recently closing some of my old documents and came across an old draft of myself arguing with a Jonsa on YouTube or Reddit or somewhere in the wild out there about Pol!Jon. I've spent probably over five years now arguing against the Pol!Jon theory so there's a lot to talk about. Let's dive in!

But first, what is Pol!Jon? It has other names like UndercoverLover!Jon and is short for Political!Jon but basically, it's quite the misogynistic little theory that still breathes life into the hearts and minds of some Jonsas around here. It features Jon callously using Dany and sexually manipulating her while faking his love for her in order to gain access to her dragons and armies to fight the Others.

In this theory, Jon is a separatist who would never give up Sansa's precious independent North because in this theory, Jon's life revolves around Sansa and what Sansa wants. According to Jonsas, Jon lives everyday for Sansa and fought the Battle of the Bastards for Sansa (Rickon who?) He asks Melisandre not to bring him back if he falls because apparently, if he can't protect Sansa, he doesn't want to live at all (I thought it was because he was suicidal per canon and he didn't want to be brought back to life a second time). In this theory, Jon wants to fight the army of the dead to create a better world for Sansa. He must steal Dany's dragons for Sansa and ride Dany like a braindead flesh eating horse... for Sansa.

Now Dany. Oh boy. Of course, according to Jonsas, Dany is always a piece of work. Dany is a cruel, heartless firebug tyrant witch who loves2kill, eats blood sandwiches, drinks blood milk, and can easily be controlled and manipulated by sex (until she's not but that's also, somehow, "proof" of Pol!Jon-- oh, I'm sorry, Sacrificial!Jon now). After she bathes in virgin blood and feeds more babies to her rooms' fires to keep her toes toasty, Dany'll summon her nephew to have sex telepathically by thinking how she'd like to see him in private later.

But yeah, basically this is how they were characterized: Jon was a Stark Northern nationalist and Sansa groupie who was going to sexually exploit and nefariously use Dany, Dany was just a brainless dictator thirstbot who could be steered like a happy lil steamboat ⛵ with Jon's penis. The original theory had Jon faking his fealty to Dany and plotting with Sansa against Dany once they found out his true parentage (see, Jon would be telling Sansa his true parentage first and hiding it from Dany while making sweet sweet nephew love to her with his body to keep her sweet, docile, and placated -- oops). There was even to be a Dance of the Dragons 2.0 between Dany and Jon per Jonsa speculations when the ruse was up but alas, none of that happened, despite Jonsas acting like all their predictions happened :)

Now usually, a nice calm discussion with a Jonsa over Pol!Jon will start something like this...

Jonsa:

"You know, and I do not mean to be rude, but it never ceases to amuse me that whenever I’m in a discussion [about Pol!Jon] with a Dany fan … that is a fan who refuses to believe that Dany’s capable of doing what she did in the show, despite evidence to the contrary in the books … they always, always, get into justifying her by comparison. They’ll bring up Arya, Bran, Ned, Robb, and of course, their favorite, Sansa. Why? Did I mention Sansa? Did I say what I thought about her and Jon?"

So why bring up Sansa? Pol!Jon is central to Sansa when it comes to Jonsaland: Jon's "love" for Sansa triumphing over all else including Jonerys, the Northern crown for Sansa, "domination" for Sansa over evil rival Dany without Sansa having to lift a single finger or sully her moral character. That's all on bad guy Jonsa-Jon who is basically treated like a corruption toilet by Jonsas -- just have him do the atrocious actions for the love of Sansa and flush it all away afterward in their "happily ever after". See, if Jon does something evil/dark/bad for Sansa, that's perfectly fine (swoon worthy even) in Jonsaland but if Dany looks at somebody the wrong way? Tyrant who deserves death. Another reason why Sansa is brought up is because it demonstrates an amazing example of Jonsa logical fallacies in action: Pol!Jonsers like to pretend Pol!Jon is the only way S7 & S8 Jon makes sense. This pretense goes hand in hand with pretending that D&D's... flawed... writing and bad plotting was limited to Jon, Dany, and their relationship and that their writing problems would be perfectly explained away by the totally sensical, unbiased, plot hole-free, absolutely non-shippery Jonsa-driven Pol!Jon theory :)

This pretends that Show!Smart!Sansa's actions make all kinds of sense, especially when it comes to a brother (Jon) that she's supposed to love: withholding potentially life-saving military info from Jon for no reason during the Battle of the Bastards when he's trying to save their brother and is facing the giant army of a skin-flaying psycho. Manipulating Jon into joining that war by using Rickon's life to pull Jon in before telling him to give up Rickon for dead the night before. Completely disregarding Jon's choices he makes about his parentage information and claim. Breaking her vow to Jon in the godswood seconds later to make Jon the central target in a claimant war from those who want Dany on the throne. TY Sansa!

It pretends that all the other non-Jon and Dany plots from season 5 were perfectly sound.

Do we have a Pol!Jon theory for when Jon puts Sansa in the crypts during the battle against the dead, knowing the Night King raises the dead? Maybe Jon's hoping he can finally get rid of Sansa's nagging with an, "Oops! I put her in the crypts and blanked out about the dead people! Stress, you know?" "What about all the other civilians?" "Tbf, Sam, did we really need them?" "Dark, dude." "Right? Death changes a man." Enjoy the Dark!Jon, Jonsas :)

In this post, I'll look over the origins of Pol!Jon, run through the outcomes of the theory, take a look at the different versions it ran through once Pol!Jon v1 didn't start coming to pass on the show, the self contradictions of the theory and between its various versions, and Jonsa response to canon :) Finally, I will look at the ramifications Pol!Jon would have to Jon's arc and its themes before closing out.

Origins

Despite later claims from Jonsas, Pol!Jon didn't come about based on observations from the show or that "something fishy was going on" between Jon and Dany (somehow always only observed by Jonsa fans). It came about nearly a year prior to Jon and Dany even sharing screen time -- Pol!Jon was born in reaction to leaks in November 2016 that revealed Jon and Dany would be hooking up. I remember first seeing it in December 2016.

After the massive meltdown died down a bit, Jonsas began cobbling a story together that they could live with: Jon sexually exploiting a rape victim and faking his love for her :)

And with this new story Jonsas push onto Jon, our newest little Northern Nationalist refuses to give up the North's precious independence for any reason, nevermind a crucial theme in Jon's arc being about unity. Jon's now got to depend on his mighty penis to steer that monster Dany in the right direction. A big job for a little fellow :(

And this was decided by the Jonsa community before even shooting for season 7 began.

Real woke and progressive, guys.

Now let's examine how this would play out! :)

The outcomes of Pol!Jon

Well, turns out Pol!Jon never really had an exit strategy because when you run the scenarios through:

a) Jon knowingly submits the North to somebody he believes is an unhinged, unstable tyrant who could go off at any time -- when he didn’t even have to -- hoping his dick is enough to control her and that she never catches on (ie. that Dany is a thirst bot controlled by the d) or;

b) the Dance of the Dragons v2 scenario: he reveals that he’s been using Dany and lying to her this whole time (which would be treason), handing Dany and her supporters a glittering reason on a silver platter to go to war against the North, upon which they’ll be completely decimated or;

c) he’s scheming to get rid of Dany and actually has planned on starting yet another civil war from the beginning with Dany’s armies and supporters… while his own forces are severely lacking (thus why he needs Dany per this same theory)… causing more death and destruction to the realm, including his own people.

d) need I list out the narrative and in-universe pitfalls of what would happen if Jon decided to frame another region for Dany's murder?

Not only would framing another region start yet another needless human war within Westeros (what Jonsas are supposedly against when it comes to Dany as queen), I highly doubt GRRM is going to reward the North with peace and prosperity for Jon's stunt here (and no, neither exiling or executing Jon is payment enough for the North's peace while hundreds of thousands suffer in a war Jon caused in exchange). Plus, what happens when they're found out? Oh wait, is the North special and they get away with it forever and ever?

Worse yet, Dany hasn't even done anything at this point but save Westeros from total annihilation. And Jon is plotting against her? Why? Even more mind boggling, this is the same speculation Jonsas have for the books too. So Dany plays a crucial part in saving the world from one of Jon's darkest nightmares coming true and he's plotting her assassination...?

And no, don't give me that dAnY iS a TyRaNt aNd a ConQueRoR AnD JoN haTeS fIrE. Jon, himself, is a feudal lord -- he is elected but Jon himself does not take a vote on his decisions or run trials. Jon, himself, has fought with fire from atop the Wall. Jon's hero was the Young Dragon, a 14-year old conqueror who invaded Dorne. Jon dreamed of being a conqueror himself. Jon has generations of Stark ancestors -- and a Stark brother -- who are conquerors. I could go on but that is a post for another day.

Oh, and in the scenario Dany's not this evil hurricane of darkness and fire? Nice job torpedoing that much needed alliance, Jon. Dany has connections in the east, is queen of Meereen, while the North is struggling with food scarcity, would have just fought a war and is in dire need of repair...

So with Pol!Jon, Jon is placed in a far more incomprehensible and nonsensical position -- it can't even handle an exit strategy. Yet proponents of Pol!Jon claim this theory would make Jon "smart" :/

Revision!Pol!Jon

Sadly for Jonsas everywhere, Pol!Jon kept having to undergo revision after revision by desperately rallying Pol!Jonsers because, unfortunately, Jon would do things that didn’t comply with Pol!Jon.

This includes things like Jon’s fealty being genuine (when Jonsas were so sure it was a ruse); telling Dany the truth about himself before telling Sansa (when Pol!Jonsers were so sure Jon would confide in Sansa first and keep it from Dany); refusing to press his claim against hers when the original theory posited that Jon would secretly use his claim against Dany to undermine her and take the throne from her resulting in the Dance of Dragons v2 (which Pol!Jonsers were sure Jon would do with the aid of Top Advisor Sansa); not warning Sansa or Arya about the oooooooh-so-apparently-dangerous Dany (as Pol!Jonsers were sure Jon would do to reveal his “true” feelings and his “real” plan with Dany); never revealing, “Oh, Sansa, I never loved her, I’ve always loved you! That burn-happy psychotic dictator was just a deluded tool in my grand plan to save the North and only the North, before I marry you, my true love! Will you marry me and make me the happiest man in the world by becoming your parents born again? Including the woman who brought me so much pain for most of my life?”… A revelation which Pol!Jonsers were waiting for with bated breath but alas, never came, etc. Among other things.

And as revision after revision of Pol!Jon occurred, it resulted in more and more contradictions within various iterations of their own theory.

Eventually, Pol!Jon became Sacrificial!Jon wherein several 180s are done: surprise, Jon wasn't faking fealty to Dany after all -- so, of course, he must be forcing his fealty to save the North and placate Dany! And now, Jon is suddenly "too honourable" to betray fealty to Dany (but this honour doesn't matter when it comes to manipulating, exploiting, and faking love for a rape victim apparently). Ditto goes for dropping Dany like a stone after the war against the dead -- that didn't happen so Jonsas figured it's part of Jon's "Sacrificial!Jon" ruse, the one where Jon does whatever Dany wants to keep her satisfied, pliant, and happy so Jon can get her away from Sansa safely and calmly...

...Except, while Jon does side with Dany in some areas (like the 8x04 war council), Jon doesn't simply keep Dany satisfied, pliant, and happy, nor does he do everything she wants and they both know it. In 8x02, Jon now knows Dany is his aunt and spends the whole episode avoiding everybody who isn't from the Wall, including Dany -- much to Dany's displeasure. Where's the placation?

Remember the Jonsa explanation for why Jon and Dany's first sexual encounter happens well after Jon pledges fealty to Dany since, in Jonsaview, Jon was only pledging fealty to and seducing Dany for her help (help that she freely vows to Jon before he gives his allegiance to Dany)? I recall Jonsas explained it away that Jon sexed Dany up because he had to seduce her into apparently keeping her on side: focused on the Night King, her mind off Cersei, and her body and mind pliant, satisfied, happy, and under Jon's control. That was the whole point of boatsex apparently -- according to Jonsas. And what happens right after Dany, Jon, & co. all learn Cersei lied about their truce? Jon bolts, avoiding Dany and everyone else in the room.

Uh oh, looks like Pol!Jon isn't doing his job.

So yeah, where's Jon appeasing Dany and keeping her "on side" here?

At the end of that same episode, Dany comes and finds Jon. He's honest with her about the truth of his parentage, Dany is the first one Jon tells -- well before Sansa (which pissed Jonsas right off) and even Arya. Then, in the fourth episode, Jon initiates but stops their make-out session because of his incest hang-ups and Dany voices that she wishes Jon never told her the truth. Jon is frustrated too. He tells that he must tell his sisters. They argue. Jon doesn't back down. Dany doesn't back down. Again, where's the placation in this scene? Where is Jon holding back? Later, in episode five, Jon withdraws from their intimacy again. Where's the appeasement, placation, mollification here? Jon's not doing or saying things Dany wants here and again, they both know it, so how can his words and actions when they are positive about Dany or in defence of Dany be a ruse? How is Sacrificial!Jon working out here with supposedly "taming the dragon" when he's not doing what she wants either?

Well, apparently this is also proof that Dany is being "played" by Jon because get this: Jon's disagreement and resistance to their intimacy here isn't due to his issues with incest or wanting to be honest with Dany that he feels he must tell his family, no. According to Jonsas, it's Jon showing his simmering secret disdain for his "captor" and balking at her authority. The writers and scripts and logic be damned!

It’s telling that Pol!Jon only came after the season 7 leaks revealed Jon and Dany were getting together. It was never a theory (for the show or books) before that point.

And not only that, while today's Jonsas make fun of the Jonerys people for ever believing that Jon knocked Dany up, the Jonsas of 2018-19 had a contingency plan for that too -- introducing Abortion!Jon. Abortion!Jon features an even more morally depraved Jon who secretly slips a pregnant Dany moon tea without her knowledge or consent to abort their child.

Yeah. "Feminists."

Then again, it's not like Jonsas see Jon as a lead character in his own story anyway.

And those are but a few examples off the top of my head.

But onto the next section!

Conspiracy Theories!

In the previous section, I talked about how the ever growing build up of contradictions within the theory itself resulted from the show relentlessly going against Pol!Jon as events played out on screen. Consequently, Jonsas forced the theory to undergo revisions into other versions to, erm, "accommodate" these contradictions.

Unfortunately for its anxious followers, Pol!Sacrificial!Abortion!Jonsa!Jon was not victorious yet. Canon script and interview snippets still wielded their ugly swords: Jon loved Dany. Dany loved Jon. Jon's fealty to Dany was genuine and he bent the knee to Dany after realizing he loved her. Gah. He was into Dany as soon as he saw her. THAT TREACHEROUS WHORE (Jon, I mean. Think of the North! The whining flip flopping North!) And he blueballed Dany because he learned she was his aunt! So it wasn't because he realized he had Dany trapped in Winterfell with the Night King coming per the (✨new & revised✨) Pol!Jon proposal and now he was just. so. relieved. to. realize. he didn't have to sex her sweetly, gently, and doublecrossedly anymore!!

I've just got to ask a bit of a question about this whole thing....

a) When and where did Jon look relieved to be done making out with Dany in 8x04?

b) How would Jon know down to the second, minute, or even hour when the Night King was coming? Did they share numbers at Hardhome? Does Tormund know he has another bud Beyond the Wall?

c) If Jon was supposed to be focused on trapping Dany in WF until he knew for sure the NK was close and knew what time he'd be coming, why did Jon spend the whole day avoiding Dany too, giving her lots of time to leave? You know, if Dany is the flight risk Jonsas say she is?

....Because even when Dany and Jon hear the horn, it's not like Dany couldn't just turn around, refuse to fight, hop on Drogon, wish the North good luck, and order her dragons and armies to leave. Which is what Jonsas were literally speculating up until the end of 8x02 that night it aired.

Anyway, the show had written Dany and Jon to be in love and mutually. This was unacceptable to Jonsas so they got to work in fantasyland :)

But boy, were Jonsas and Stansas mad when the scripts said Jon loved Dany :) and they use these conspiracy theories to:

a) “invalidate” the cast/crew/writers/scripts stating Jon loved Dany by saying they were lying just for the sake of the public (even after the finale aired...);

b) to explain away story aspects even they couldn’t twist into the Pol!Jonsa narrative (such as Jon rationalizing Dany’s burning King’s Landing -- because Jon was "too honourable" to betray Dany but again, not too honourable to use and abuse a rape victim I guess... or commit oathbreaking back in season 3 or be willing to break sacred guest right in season 4...?);

c) to claim such scenes such as the 8x06 Tyrion/Jon scene where Jon is rationalizing Dany's actions are “retcons” while the “real” Pol!Jon ending was trashed and scripts were “tampered with”.

(ahahahahahaha)

Honestly, that blows me away. The entitlement and gall of that fandom to think that their crack theory driven by their crack ship is writer backed. I don't care how terrible the writers are -- that they honest to god think their misogynistic little punishment wet dream of a "theory" is a credible storyline when it doesn't even have an exit strategy is truly mind-blowing.

Oh, and they’ve blamed Emilia Clarke for cockblocking Jonsa. Sure. Does Emilia Clarke even know what Jonsa is? Does she care? If Emilia Clarke really had this power, wouldn’t she use it to change the final act of Dany’s story on the show? Point to me where D&D is trying to “appease” Dany stans? Whose fave has a crown again?

Jonsas claim D&D scrapped Pol!Jon at the last minute because it’d be too “controversial” for the audience.... on Game of Thrones. Where they had a pregnant woman stabbed to death... in her pregnant tummy. Jonsas deny Kit Harington’s confusion and bewilderment over Jonsa, claiming his “acting choices” are evidence that he was acting out Jonsa all along but forced by the higher-ups to give the Jonerys party line (you know, the couple that ended so happily) or just straight up making up baseless rumours:

The list goes on. As a result, those still bitterly hanging onto the theory keep insisting there is “support” for this shipper-derived-and-driven theory which was conveniently developed to explain away Jon and Dany’s relationship upon finding out it would be happening in season 7.

"Support" like when I asked a Jonsa who claimed Dany "summoned" Jon to her chambers the night he came to her room for boat sex in the "original script". I asked them to show me. This is what they were talking about -- from the leaked season 7 outline. Heavy sigh.

When the meeting ends, Theon asks if he can speak to Jon alone. Jon asks for Dany’s permission to do so. Dany grants it. She has some things she’d like to discuss with Jon later, privately. Exit Dany.

Yes, this is apparently a summons. A woman thinking about what she'd like to discuss with a man privately. This is what comprises "support" for a Jonsa.

Ramifications and Themes

Jonsas and their lunacy do make me laugh with how so off the mark they are and I love arguing with them on Reddit. That said, Pol!Jon admittedly steps on a nerve because of how sheerly problematic this theory is and what it says. It's not that Jonsas are regular ASOIAF fans that have deduced this theory from text and are afraid of this theory coming to fruition. They came up with this theory to happen as some sort of contingency plan because their nightmare (Jonerys) was happening over their fantasy (Jonsa) whereby their girl Sansa was not getting with the hot young hero secret prince, Jon. It's down to a pathetic ship war over a ship that is a total crack ship. They vilified Dany to prop up Sansa because Dany got the guy they want for Sansa.

We've got shit like this:

To repeat what I said above, Jonsas came up with a theory that has Jon sexually exploiting and faking his love for a rape victim (who loves him!) And how do they characterize said rape victim? As the enemy. As the one who "deserves it". As a brain dead dictator who must be brutally killed after she is sexually manipulated, used, and abused.

Let's talk about that for a moment.

Jonsas keep claiming that Dany was “abusive” to Jon and vilifying her for it. Yet also, in the very same breath, these same Jonsas came up with and supported theories like the very abusive Pol!Jon. They not only theorized Pol!Jon, they counted on it, looked forward to it, and insisted this theory was the only way the story and Jon made "sense" – an overly convoluted, inconsistent, contradictory, and incredibly misogynistic theory they developed in which Jon is abusive to Dany in his manipulation, lies, and exploitation – all for the sake of Jonsa/Sansa.

Yep, and not only that, they have Jon doing the act. Jon, who has spent his book arc empowering weaker characters (often fellow outsiders, his tightest bonds by far) in self defence and combat so they can defend themselves. So they aren't caught off guard. So they can fight. He believes in arming women, spearwives. Giving them their own castle, even if preventing rape means losing some of his men, even against objections of his officers -- but he's going to sexually prey on Dany, is he?

And you better believe Dany would be one of those characters dragon or no (and for the vast majority of the series, she's been without a dragon to bail her out). Dany is not afraid to go into battle or lead forces on the ground, as she's shown already when she's jumped right into the fray head first, but she still needs to be trained with a sword and in ground combat. She's still a 16-year old small-boned girl who is thin and short -- but sure, Jon's going to sexually prey on her.

Jonsas also love to use Ygritte as a "precedent" for Jon sexually manipulating and faking love for Dany but I love to use this as evidence for Jonsas who do so never reading the books :) Ygritte blackmailed Jon into sleeping with her. Jon was clear about rejecting Ygritte’s sexual advances, despite his growing attraction to her to the point where Tormund questions what Jon’s problem is. And when Jon did sleep with her, his feelings for her genuinely deepened. Jon notes he loves Ygritte. Twice:

Ghost padded beside their garrons as Jon and Ygritte descended the Fist. It was not until they were halfway across the Milkwater that Jon felt safe enough to say, “I never asked you to lie for me.”

“I never did,” she said. “I left out part, is all.”

“You said—”

“—that we fuck beneath your cloak many a night. I never said when we started, though.” The smile she gave him was almost shy. “Find another place for Ghost to sleep tonight, Jon Snow. It’s like Mance said. Deeds is truer than words.”

Ygritte was much in his thoughts as well. He remembered the smell of her hair, the warmth of her body . . . and the look on her face as she slit the old man's throat. You were wrong to love her, a voice whispered. You were wrong to leave her, a different voice insisted. He wondered if his father had been torn the same way, when he'd left Jon's mother to return to Lady Catelyn. He was pledged to Lady Stark, and I am pledged to the Night's Watch.

"Who is Ygritte?" Donal Noye asked pointedly.

"A woman of the free folk." How could he explain Ygritte to them? She's warm and smart and funny and she can kiss a man or slit his throat. "She's with Styr, but she's not . . . she's young, only a girl, in truth, wild, but she . . ." She killed an old man for building a fire. His tongue felt thick and clumsy. The milk of the poppy was clouding his wits. "I broke my vows with her. I never meant to, but..." It was wrong. Wrong to love her, wrong to leave her... "I wasn't strong enough. The Halfhand commanded me, ride with them, watch, I must not balk, I . . ." His head felt as if it were packed with wet wool.

And the Jonsa response?

A euphemism.

And GRRM wrote Jon's reference and preference for femininity (Arya) after the second wave feminists he himself knew and grew up with; who transformed history and changed society, helping to pave the way for women now.

That Jon is going to use, abuse, and discard Dany like a used tissue? What kind of message is this?

One of the only characters who embrace women who are different, who go against the curve, who don't adhere to convention, who actually prefer women who defy convention, who can fight and defend themselves, who break rigid gender roles -- Jonsas want him to get in line and desire the conventionally ideal "pure" lady, like Sansa is supposed to be, over violent and messy and sexually experienced women. Excellent. Sansa is a maiden and doesn't get her hands dirty. That's the way they like Sansa. That's why Dany, Arya, Ygritte, Val, et. al are all inferior to Sansa. Doesn't matter that Jon has other partners or that he also does violence. Apparently, it only matters if you're a woman.

Another important part of Jon's character is his realization that a) the wildlings are not the enemy, they are our fellow man and b) all humankind need to unite to face a common threat: the Others.

"I am the sword in the darkness," said the six, and it seemed to Jon as though their voices were changing, growing stronger, more certain. "I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men."

The shield that guards the realms of men. Ghost nuzzled up against his shoulder, and Jon draped an arm around him. He could smell Horse's unwashed breeches, the sweet scent Satin combed into his beard, the rank sharp smell of fear, the giant's overpowering musk. He could hear the beating of his own heart. When he looked across the grove at the woman with her child, the two greybeards, the Hornfoot man with his maimed feet, all he saw was men.

This passage reminds me of a quote from GRRM here:

Putting aside the specifics of [Brexit], and taking a long-range look, I think history shows that we do better when we join together into larger political units that embrace diversity, rather than building walls and breaking into smaller units. Yet another aspect of Jon's arc that Pol!Jon strips away. Unity and the incredible importance of unity, of compromise, of negotiation, even when it's difficult. Of talking with people, even when relations aren't entirely friendly (or even when it's with an enemy!) and navigating communications from that point.

No. Instead, it turns Jon into a separatist, a Northern nationalist, and that's the kind verbiage. The relationship is flattened into "master" schemer and braindead fool. "Smarter" male predator and dumb female prey. Real nice. This has Jon working for the Starks' interests and only the Starks' interests, just like the good lil bastard he is. When I say Stark, I really mean Sansa because the interests of Arya/Bran/Rickon/Jon are never really discussed when it comes to Jonsa/Stansa theories. They all want what Sansa wants, of course, and do her dirty work. Sansa remains pure as punch. Jon is actively plotting against Dany in a suicide mission that is destined to end in disaster (at best) and decimate the entire North and vilify it for ages (at worst). I can't even begin to think of how Jonsas would spin the unity aspect of Jon's storyline. Do they even care about uniting with the wildlings for instance, considering how they view Ygritte as an ugly disease ridden rapist gremlin and that Jon is due for an "upgrade" in Sansa?

I don't know, Jon. If I was going to date one (or more) of my relatives, I'd go for the one(s) who liked me regardless of my bastard status :)

Pol!Jon is an atrocious problematic theory that started out as a deluded desperation to keep a crack ship alive after finding out that ship wouldn't sail....and it turned into a monster that is pushed as canon on general boards and social media platforms. Yet, on the other hand, it's fascinating to see how vehemently some Jonsas insist on dying on that horrible, sexist hill and the lunacy they come up with to combat canon and avoid some fictional truths all to keep hating on a character to keep their fanon alive.

I am sorry for the length. I have a lot of feelings. And a lot of pot.

Okay, as the premier internet trans kurtologist (after Imogen Binnie of course), I have some THOUGHTS about that interview with Courtney Love on 60 songs that explains the 90s lol.

(Yes, I know that it's immoral to speculate on a public figures gender. However, I am an irredeemably evil person who deserves the chair. Sorry. Life is more fun on the dark side.)

Honestly, there were parts of the interview that were specifically adressed to me, or rather might as well have been lol. It feels like she was addressing questions he she thinks that people in general are asking themselves, but no, Courtney. Courtney! I am the only person in the universe that have overthought things enough to be asking these questions! Like, that whole bit about not liking "the canonised, castrated version of Kurt" is vague enough that people won't catch on and also clear enough that anyone in the know also know that you're also discussing the trans issue.

(There is no way Courtney hasn't found that part of the internet yet. No chance. She has been super online since 19freakin'94. There's also no way she doesn't completely despise that discussion, both for reasonable reasons that anyone who knew Kurt might think it's gauche to speculate, but also for extremely shitty unreasonable reasons.)

However, jumping directly from that to discussing "oh, we did all of that stuff with the red hair and those outfits to uglify him" kind of sounds like a non sequitur to basically ANYONE BUT ME! Sure, most Nirvana fans know like the rough timeline of when Kurt had that hairstyle or whatever. I am basically the only person in the world who has been obsessive enough to go through the timeline and notice how drastically, suddenly Kurt Cobain's presentation of himself changed at the end of 1991. Like, there's a very clear delineation between how Kurt presented himself before that point and after. It was also around that time that YOU started sending him love letters where you called him your girlfriend lmao. Very mysterious indeed.

And yeah, when you said that Kurt had "red pill issues" and "we wouldn't know where he would have landed politically" I actually believe you. Kurt seems to have been a mess both politically and privately. However, that whole thing about being bothered about the "castrated, canonised version of Kurt" is horsecock. In Patty Schemel's book, she VERY CLEARLY stated that Kurt hated taking on that masculine role and that YOU pressured him and talked him into it lol. Also, didn't you, after the funeral, go up to Dany Goldberg and say say "Kurt and I always said we wanted to be like Dany and Rosemary. The problem was that we both wanted to be Rosemary".

So yeah, it honestly seems like Courtney was much more concerned about Kurt being seen as masculine than Kurt ever was. I mean, she did actually marry someone we know for a fact was an (at the time) closeted trans woman, and what that former spouse of yours has said on that topic honestly speaks for itself lol.

So yeah, we can't definitively say anything about Kurt's gender because that fucking weeb is, tragically, dead. However, Courtney's attempts at deflection honestly just makes me even more convinced about my version of events. I mean, she seems to have wanted to debunk them, but I'm basically the only one who wasn't there who has that version of events in my brain. Oh well, lol.

Oh, by the way, hi Courtney! I know that there is a very real risk that you'll be reading this post since you are the most terminally online public figure I know. I'll just say that if you do read this, you were actively searching for this content lol. I'm not Magdalene Visaggio blasting it out for all of the internet to see. Two dudes who didn’t practice enough

analizing their marketing strategy as youtuber, and also a letter to them

Looks like I’ve been stanning Twosetviolin for pretty long time. A year and counting. But this same person haven’t watched their vids for like 2 weeks who am I tho.

And for that I know that they’re on going question that hasn’t been answered for ages was if my boyz--Brett and Eddy--are dating. Cause yeah, they’re cute AF together, have those dreamy ship dynamics, literally look like they are both in love in their vids, and so on.

Don’t worry, I also ship them. But the fact that they haven’t given the fandom any clue about this concerns me. Cause I don’t want to ship someone who frankly say that they don’t want to be shipped with each other. It would make them feel extremely uncomfortable, and disrespecting their privacy, right?

And to make me get those shipping in guilt feels, they use matching captions on promoting their merchs.

For example from their last two merch promo pics:

I swear to God, their new promo pics (and possibly the next three upcoming promo pics) will have matching captions as well. They freaking look like such a middle school couple that just dated for a week I wanna cry

Of course, the feedback was so great. Stans are dying, keep on questioning whether this was them slowly coming out that they are dating. Me? Ships in guilt even harder.

And maybe, that’s what they thought, too.

To make sure that their viewers stay with them--in addition to long running jokes, comedic content that somehow still educates you, dorky personalities, promising that they’ll do something once they’ve reached particular subsribers (2 million Tchaikovsky freaking SLAPS, dudes. You guys ROCKS!)--let’s make a long running mystery; are they dating? Make it even more questionable by liking some comments regarding this.

They probably play along to this long-running mystery to make sure we stays. Cause yeah, some fans would tell their IRL friends, their friends ask the same questions, and join the fandom out of curiosity. Then, the fandom grows even bigger. That’s a win solution for them.

They could make this mystery last forever. Or maybe, just maybe, in 5 years or so, finally come out like Dan and Phil. And told us that they’re going to get married tomorrow, just like Sam Tsui’s come out vid. Even i n t e r e s t i n g, they’ve been married for 3 years.

Just maybe.

Anyway, I just want to say that they might play along and gain more subscribers by taking advantage to this long-running mystery. We can speculate over anything cause they haven’t confirmed or denying anything.

Oh, and my message.

Back to that phrase. Fall in love. People sometimes forget that there are more love besides romantic love. One of them is platonic love. That’s how you’ve been able to love your siblings, or parents. That thing also can happens to bestfriends. Especially two dudes that have been friends for 14 years. They might be just love each other like siblings.

What I’m trying to say is, if you guys want to say something about this, and you guys want to tell us that it’s platonic love, I would still support and love you, tho. Just because the long running mystery has been solved, doesn’t mean that your journey would end. You guys, or us, would eventually find another mystery to solve. But more than that, we will wait for your upcoming i n t e r e s t i n g contents, Stay awesome, boyz!

Dabi’s Missing Heart

So I’ve been seeing two main responses to Dabi’s character as portrayed in BNHA 292, both of which I feel touch on a very surface understanding of his character and role in the story despite seeming like opposite takes.

Take #1:

Dabi is an unfeeling monster created to show the redeemability of Shigaraki and Enji in contrast with his true eeeevil villainy! He will never be redeemed!

Take #2:

Dabi is a sweet softy who did nothing wrong! He will never be redeemed because of this chapter which is so out-of-character!

Note how they both have the same endpoint. I’m not actually gonna address the redemption question much because I can’t fathom what this panel foreshadows if not Touya’s salvation (alive):

I’m not looking to debate this either; I’m just putting it here because I know it’ll come up if I don’t.

Instead, I wanna address Dabi’s character. He’s my favorite, and I’ve been asked a few different times whether I enjoy him as a villain or as an uwu poor baby, and my answer is always both.

Dabi is a villain. This chapter’s rampage is, in my opinion, not remotely out of character for him. But neither is it the summation of his character, and he surely is not meant to make Enji look good by comparison.

So, who is Dabi?

Dabi is kind of a flaming jerk, and that’s why I like him. He’s an abuse victim who gets to be angry and crass and sharp. He pushes people away because he doesn’t want to open up to them and get burned (heh). He’s just like Shouto in that, except with a dose of murder.

Believe it or not, this is a very realistic response to abuse, and very common too. It’s good to see that representation. If the writing was indeed just “he’s bad get rid of him,” well, that would of course be a terrible representation. But seeing a mean victim get redeemed? Now that’s some good sh*t I’m here for.

If you want a sweethearted, misunderstood soft victim, there is one in MHA, and that’s Shigaraki. Dabi is not these things, but that does not mean he’s not a victim or that he’s somehow an unfeeling monster.

You see, Shigaraki is a heart character. Dabi’s the mind. (Heart and mind characters are a literary pattern that is utilized in literature across the globe; it’s not an eastern/western cultural thing. It has its roots in alchemy.) The problem is that you can’t have a heart without a mind nor a mind without a heart. If you lack one, you’re missing half the picture, and you won’t accomplish anything.

We see this with Shigaraki in his quest to look for ideals, something to believe in, purpose to justify/enable acting on his feelings/emotions.

Dabi, in contrast, has conviction and ideals, but eschews any kind of personal connection and care.

So, both Shigaraki and Dabi struggle to unite heart and mind--but they need to do precisely this.

It’s not a coincidence that Shigaraki expressly envisions both Dabi and Himiko when musing on what his purpose is.

Yet Shigaraki is able to unite more easily with Himiko as opposed to Dabi because Himiko is also a heart character. She claims to be motivated by extreme empathy that warps around to become a lack thereof (wanting to be who she loves).

Shigaraki’s motivations are basically revenge for hero society not saving him--which encompasses both a deep internal and external (societal) need for empathy and a need for better ideals. Shigaraki needs Himiko and Dabi. They’re a trio, and all of them need each other to grow. But Himiko, being similarly driven expressly by emotions, is easier for Shigaraki to understand and work with.

The irony is that Dabi is actually a very, very emotional character as well. But what he does (as is typical for a mind character) is repress them, compartmentalize, dissociate. He constantly pushes people away, yet admits privately, to himself, that he’s primarily (and paradoxically) motivated by family. This is emotional, yet Dabi claims he “overthought” and, according to other translations, “snapped” can be actually be read as “went crazy” as a result over overthinking (note: both are mind allusions).

Dabi repressing who he is--Todoroki Touya--is symbolic of him repressing his emotional side, because again, family and emotions are tied together for his character. Now his identity is acknowledged, and Dabi claims to be losing his mind (again), claims that he can’t feel, and yet is completely consumed by emotions. Like, does anyone think he’s being methodical and calculating this chapter?

It’s not just negative emotions (rage, hate) that drive Dabi in response to his family. His seeking belonging and emotional connection is present even in a chapter where he tries to murder two members of his family and laughs off the risk to the life of another.

See, Dabi first asked Shouto to validate his pain:

But like, given the circumstances, of course Shouto doesn’t really respond well. How Shouto responds is this:

Shouto’s words are triggering. And keep in mind I am not blaming Shouto: he’s in shock and he’s a kid. I’m merely trying to explain how it likely comes across to Dabi.

You’re crazy. Your feelings don’t matter. You don’t really care about Natsuo! You’re a villain and that’s ALL you are. Not a brother or abuse survivor. Just a villain.

So, uh, yeah, Dabi then retreats back to being unable to feel, dissociating as has always been his coping mechanism. But that’s not all: Dabi’s been repressing for so long that of course he’s gonna go a little insane in response to the dismissal of everything he’s trying to point out. Why wouldn’t he? His family dismissed his pain back then and now again, and so, without that heart, without those emotions, principle is all Dabi has. This has been present since long before Stain’s ideology came into his life:

Now, he answers this question of existence through Stain’s ideology. Purpose is all he has, and to him, Shouto and Best Jeanist are dismissing that too. Why are they dismissing it? Best Jeanist dismisses him for an ideal: the overall good of hero society. Shouto has a mixture of this ideal and also like, genuine shock and pain.

Back to Dabi. Dabi’s summation of himself and his purpose is incorrect and harmful to himself and others. I’m not excusing him or justifying, just explaining. It’s a tragic reflection of what Endeavor raised both Touya and Shouto to be (and thereby ironic that BJ uses an ideal to dismiss him):

Instead of being raised to be the symbol of hero society--as Endeavor intended--he exists to destroy it. The root is the same: Dabi assumes he exists for hero society, as a tool. He dehumanizes himself, hence why his quirk physically harms him (which also fits his almost religious zeal for Stain’s ideology). But it is not all Dabi is. He’s not a tool, he’s a person, but to acknowledge he’s a person involves acknowledging his heart/emotional desires, and that gets to my next point.

Dabi’s not a reliable narrator about himself. At all. I’ve written about Dabi and dissociation before. So let’s look at Dabi’s devotion to his ideals, the ideals he puts above people and claims he only cares about... because there are moments where Dabi goes against those ideals.

For one example, Dabi’s gone against those ideals when he’s allowed his personal need for revenge (an emotional/heart motivation) to overcome his longterm plan. Like, he was fully about to get himself killed here, even though that would likely mean no one would know the corruption of the Todoroki family and hero society, just for the chance to prove to his father that he hurt him.

In addition, I’ve talked before about how Dabi’s the only character in the entire damn manga to comment that maybe using child soldiers is not okay. While it’s not explicitly stated, it’s reasonable to conclude that Dabi considers the abuse of children in hero training a sin of hero society that ought to be purged (hence, part of his ideals).

That said, I have also pointed out that Dabi has gone after children in the past when it benefits his mission (Bakugou would like a word). So let’s look at four examples of Dabi and his principles concerning kids--since, after all, he claims to be motivated by heroes who hurt kids.

Firstly, Dabi’s “save the cat” when he spared Aoyama.

Why did he spare Aoyama? We can only speculate, but it seems quite likely there are two reasons: 1) hurting Aoyama would not add anything to his overall goal of downing hero society, and 2) a terrified, cowering kid might just have been a teeny bit familiar to Dabi. Here, his ideals--destroying hero society--either take a backseat to a reflection of his personal pain (and)/or his ideal of not abusing kids directly contradicted his ideal of bringing down hero society. But the important part is that in this instance, Dabi chose mercy and the goal of bringing down hero society was jeopardized as a result.

So then why did he attack Tokoyami, Nejire, and Shouto this arc? Well, Dabi does things he knows are wrong for the sake of accomplishing his overall purpose. He does things he knows hurt himself for this purpose. This isn’t new. If he can’t be acknowledged, can’t exist as a person with emotions, then he at least will ensure he still has a purpose.

In addition, let’s look at what sets Dabi off in all of these instances. (Again, this isn’t me saying “well actually Dabi’s justified.” He’s not. I’m just pointing to what’s in the text to explain the machinations beyond “bad guy do bad.”)

Dabi tries to reason with Tokoyami, pointing out that Twice was doing essentially what Tokoyami is doing: trying to save his friend(s), but Tokoyami doesn’t listen (also again: not me saying Tokoyami should have listened--realistically, in this situation, it makes sense Tokoyami trusted his mentor!)

Only after his reasoning was rejected did Dabi go to flames mode. He could have just let Tokoyami save Hawks, but instead he really wanted to kill Hawks and that overrode his other principles. Was this just because of his furthering his goal--killing the #2 hero would help destroy hero society--or because of a sense of personal revenge for Twice? That’s open for interpretation (in my opinion, it’s likely a mixture, because again, it tends to intertwine more than Dabi likes to think it does). His principles and/or emotions are brushed aside, and Dabi Does Not Like That.

Dabi does this again with Shouto this chapter, asking him where he stands on their family issues, and gets brushed aside, and then Shouto goes into his rage mode and Dabi responds. Again, not saying Shouto is rational here or that he should side with Dabi’s murderous plan, but like, his words really don’t come across well to Dabi.

Dabi going after Shouto after explaining things, asking Shouto for help, and then having his pain dismissed is pretty much a repeat of Tokoyami. When Dabi’s pain is dismissed, he says fine, let’s aim for the highest principle possible: making Stain’s will a reality, and damn any emotional ties.

Dabi’s obsession with ideals, you might say, is a smokescreen to cover his own pain. Far from feeling nothing, he feels very deeply. (I promise I’m getting to Nejire.)

So what does this indicate? Well, that Dabi does have a heart and a conscience. But when he lets his heart act, when his heart reaches out, he gets burned. His heart jeopardizes his overall purpose, so he most often dissociates himself from it. But by pretending he doesn’t have a heart, he dehumanizes himself, and he projects that dehumanization onto others (see: seeing Shouto as an extension of Endeavor, when that’s actually the precise image Shouto is trying to shed).

It’s not a coincidence that Shigaraki has been unconscious during the entire confrontation with Endeavor, nor is it a coincidence that Himiko has been MIA. But, Shigaraki wakes up a bit this chapter not only when hearing Dabi spout about how hero society needs to burn, an ideal/the thing Shigaraki lacks, and through a less important but still-ideal-driven character in Spinner asking him to accomplish his supposed ideal of destruction, but when Dabi saves Shigaraki and Spinner.

Dabi doesn’t burn Nejire for lols (not that this makes it better because it doesn’t) or even for ideals. He burns her to save Shigaraki and Spinner, because they are his links to full humanity right now.

(Again, this is also dissociation and projection: Endeavor did this! No, Dabi, you did. You’re perpetuating violence against kids rather than stopping it.)

But anyways, when Dabi calls upon heart, Shigaraki wakes. He lends Gigantomachia and thereby Dabi and the league power.

Dabi can only grow and actually accomplish anything related to his ideals (fixing hero society) through accepting a heart--even though that will likely mean some painful surgery to shift his ideals to accommodate said heart, because pure ideals don’t leave much room for humanity. He needs to feel to actually change anything, because right now he’s just making things worse (hence, the need for saving and redemption).

I know the League aren’t the protagonists of the serIes, but their complaints aren’t exactly incorrect either (if anything they’re almost a little too valid). But through growing together, Dabi, Shigaraki, and Himiko might actually be able to accomplish something, and get themselves in a place where they can be reached and saved by Shouto, Deku, and Ochaco. Because to be saved, the kids will have to acknowledge the villains’ pain and complaints, and do something about it.

BnHA Chapter 292: You Say Jeans

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “well anyway here’s that Touya reveal I foreshadowed like a million years ago, viva la 2020.” Dabi was all “hello world, I’ve killed 30 people and today I’m going to explain to you all why” before he proceeded to explain ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but everyone was so distracted by his tale of child abuse and hero conspiracies that they didn’t much seem to notice. Can’t Ya See-Kun’s Shark Friend was all “IS THIS THE END OF HERO SOCIETY AS WE KNOW IT”, and Horikoshi was all “STAY TUNED”, and then Dabi set himself on fire and leaped off of Machia’s back like the chaotic evil, I-just-bleached-all-my-brain-cells weird little fire man he is, ready to burn everyone to crispy bits before they could even react properly to his whole big revenge speech. Fortunately he did not succeed on account of THE RETURN OF THE JING, THE JOAT, BEST FUCKING JEANIST, back from the dead by popular demand in what critics are calling “the best fucking comeback since Jesus himself.”

Today on BnHA: Best Jeanist snatches up Machia and the rest of the League with his fiber steel cables before you can say “more like BEAST JEANIST amirite.” Dabi gets all worked up and lights Hadou on fire which is a real JERK MOVE, and is all “THIS RIGHT HERE IS ALSO ENDEAVOR’S FAULT”, which, NOT SUPER CONVINCED ON THAT, BUT OKAY. Anyway so then he burns up all the cables holding him which is crazeballs btw, and then he and Shouto start fighting, and so basically the whole thing is a literal hot mess and we’ll see how that goes. Meanwhile Tomura wakes up and summons some Noumus, and poor Jeanist has to deal with those on top of the still-attempting-to-rampage Gigantomachia, and everyone else is all “we can’t help you on account of we’re all half dead”, and so it’s looking really bad. And then -- and I can’t stress enough how much I don’t even have the faintest idea how to segue into this next part -- the chapter ends with Mirio!?! just sort of POPPING UP OUT OF THE GROUND all, “SURPRISE, BITCH”, and it literally was so surprising that I am still just kind of speechless. WELL-PLAYED, I GUESS, lol wtf.

lol okay so the first page in the RHA scan is just the “three musketeers” movie promo image that we all already saw a few days ago. but it does confirm that (a) it is indeed a movie, and (b) that it’s set for a summer 2021 release! how exciting
