Starting off the 2024 season with Keiki because I've been thinking about her a lot lately

Artist's Note:

I decided to experiment a little more with my rendering style via using a more traditional approach to drawing in the shadows. I like how much texture this piece has as a result, my friend told me it looks like something out of a storybook and that was the look I was inspired by so I'm glad it turned out that way.

Also, when it came to doing the front view of the nose, I just went "fuck it" and made it a dot because why learn anatomy when you can just default to what 5 year old you did when drawing faces?

I also had an idea of how to draw Keiki's dress as that has always been something I've struggled with since it's kinda confusing to draw lol. I also gave Keiki some earrings in the shape of a kofun tomb because we need more Keiki with earrings (I could have also taken from IRL but I'll save that for when I draw Keiki next). Speaking of Kofun tombs, I made the thing she's laying down on the shape of a Kofun tomb, because this is also kind of a redraw of some old Keiki fanart from 2021 that I will show right here.

I liked the concept of it (i.e. Keiki in the middle of a Kofun keyhole with the fire thing she has surrounding her) so I decided to try at that concept again just for fun. Back then I was very adamant on staying as close to canon as possible, but now I'm a lot more lenient with how I draw the characters. The pose in the 2021 drawing was inspired by that one Shinra-Bansho records MV where Keiki showed up for 5 seconds and the rest of it was Yachie but yeah. Also I always thought Keiki's apron was a dark green BUT NO IT WAS JUST A DARK SHADE OF FUCKING TEAL ZUN WHAT IS THE COLOUR THEORY BULLSHIT YOU HAVE CONFUSED ME FOR SO LONG-

anyways, I would say this is a pretty strong start to 2024 art wise, I'm gonna keep experimenting with this new rendering style because I like it a lot!

hey frens got something kinda somber to talk about. most of you are very aware of the existence of my beautiful fiance and co-creator of basically everything i do. zae and i are getting handfasted (marriage for pagans) in october, and have been living together for about 10 years. in 2021, zae got really fucking sick, and after a few false starts, was diagnosed with a rare for of vasculitis called granulomatosis with polyangiitis, GPA for short. it’s an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in blood vessels and other tissues, ultimately stopping blood from getting to the parts of the body that need it, affecting many areas, but primarily the respiratory system. while the cause isn’t known, it usually presents in people in their 50’s or 60’s, but complications from a third bout of covid-19 appears to have made it emerge way earlier for our boy. at least, that’s what we think. his case is extremely aggressive, advancing faster than anyone could have expected. in zae’s case, it actually attacked his kidneys first, and then went after his lungs, causing both to threaten shutting down for good. he was extremely anemic and needed a ton of transfusions, narrowly avoiding dialysis, and we spent weeks in the hospital keeping him alive. he was placed on two different kinds of chemotherapy to combat the disorder. he lost his hair, went through even more fatigue and pain on top of what the disease had already put him through, and had to accept a plethora of changes to his life that will last forever. a lot of you out there have harrowing experiences of your own when it comes to chronic and potentially terminal conditions, too, I’m certain. “it’s not fun” is an understatement. though there were a couple of really fucking close calls, zae’s GPA went into remission. his hair grew back fuller and more luscious than it had ever been before. (i later learned these are affectionately referred to as “chemo curls.”) remission for gpa is usually expected to last at least 5 years, potentially up to 20, before any symptoms resurface. but zae’s case was particularly aggressive, so of course he’s not so lucky. he’s relapsing now. his symptoms have been slowly returning, and it’s been decided that he’s going back on chemo. it’s no surprise that this shit is expensive, even with insurance. we’re still paying off the care he received last time because ‘murca. being disabled myself, work has been… let’s call it inconsistent, yeah? yeah, that’s a nice and comfortable thing to call it. no one’s doing well financially these days, so we of course have to get creative. long story short(er), i’m doing a commission special! for the next MONTH, i am offering fast commissions at crazy-low prices to try and help us create a cushion to keep us afloat and relatively comfortable while we begin the chemo process again. there’s several options for a variety of budgets, because i really hate the idea of seeking something for nothing, and i absolutely abhor having to reach out in this way. it makes me feel vulnerable and icky and… i’m sure you all understand that, too. i can’t thank you all enough just for following me, and engaging with mine and zae’s work. it may sound trite, but that really makes a difference to us, especially when we’re dealing with something so painful. so if you can’t or don’t want to partake of the sale, please know that you are still a huge help to us, and we seriously appreciate each and every one of you. like, so fucking much. thanks y’all love, fletch

Hi!

I wanted to say thank you for the wonderful work you've done and are still doing to bring back Love & Legends.

It's hard to explain, but it really was a little heartbreaking when the App closed; more than a few stories in there were quite comforting to read and re-read, and to have them gone like that was sad.

Love & Legends was especially close to my heart, so imagine what a gift it truly feels to see it coming back and in such a wonderful new light! I did look online for the backups of my fave route from it (Helena's), but needless to say this is infinitely better!

The art you made for it is absolutely brilliant and so much fun. I love the style, the choices you made and especially the outfits. Your take on it is even more appealing to me for several reasons: the main character looks more mature, there's more variety in body types, the details and additions are lore-friendly and fun, the world-building and different cultures are enriched through new clothing designs, and the proportions look more realistic.

Overall, it feels like a more detailed, lore-friendly, and refreshing version of the original, and I love every aspect of it. The redesign is also very respectful of the original, which I appreciate.

I'm also obsessed with the changes you made, such good choices all around. For one, of course Lennox is a fairy, that little shit. And lightning scarred MC? Well yeah, how could she not? Helena's withered hand? Sick. Reiner literal EVERYTHING?? Fuck yes. August hair my god thank you for saving his soul (also his armor looks so good). Iseul's whole family serving c*nt, I love it; their clothes are delicious. Altea's belly! How fucking cute! And her gear is so pretty, ugh! Saerys’ body marks!!! Yes and thank you! EVERYONE NOSES!! THEY CAN BREATHE!!

I love everything. And the coloring slaps. I could not not mention that it slaps.

I could go on forever, honestly. I'm truly grateful that you're sharing this with us – you're an unsung hero.

I always felt that Love & Legends had so much potential and that there was a lot more to explore with its writing and characters. It's clear that the time and compensation for the people working on it were limiting factors.

I’m excited to keep tabs on your updates and everything else you decide to share! I also have questions/curiosities, but erm… I think I talked enough, sksk!!

Aw, this is genuinely making me emotional. I've been thinking of this project since 2021 for so many of the same reasons.

I care about these stories so much and I really wanted to approach it from that angle, redrawing characters as how I remember them rather than ever disrespecting the original, so people can both get into it for the first time or revisit it without getting turned off. I'm really happy that seems to have worked!

under the cut are some thoughts on my digital art progression + my redraws from 2021 and 2022 + more versions of the newest drawing

as you can see, the first drawing looks like shit. i started out with digital art in late 2020 and this was drawn in firealpaca after i got my first drawing tablet. (the brand was gaomon but i don't remember the model, basically it's a really cheap, screenless one.)

the linework is so wonky oh my god. no linewieght variation

the anatomy just. sucks. i did not use a reference back then

i was obsessed with putting those sparkles in people's hair and yeah, it does not look great.

no sense of color, i just picked whatever, really

for the shading i just used a darker shade of the color underneath and then blended the shit out of that

for the 2021 drawing i still used FA, but switched to a huion tablet because the old one broke

luckily got rid of the mug

Re-redraw, cuz the 2015 drawing is the only group drawing I have from my “MLP phase” that I actually have.

I think to summarize my updated style, it’s “SUITS SUITS SUITS”

From left to right, we have: “Lilli”, Star, C, Rose, Sonia, “Ignite”, “Kya”, and “Zoria”.

Lilli was based on Mieka, so she mostly got purple. And that’s abt it. I literally never used her for anything, aside from younger me wanting to have a character based on my sister.

Yeah for those who know Star and C from Facility X-535, they were originally MLP OCs LOL. Star had no backstory, while C was just a… recolored demonic Pinkie Pie. I think I just liked Star bc of the heterochromia. Nowadays, Star is the 2nd attempt of Director Sy’s “fusing two dead employees together” experiment, and C is a laid-back Bloodfiend.

Rose was created around that time as well, but I don’t know if she came before or after Star and C…? I mostly used her as a sona later on. I think she was angel for a time as well. Nowadays, she’s a goofy girlie who chills within Dream Shift, interacting with eldritch horror creatures. Maybe she was almost murdered by Haven and had to get her angel status amputated *shrug*

Sonia… was basically a genderbent Sonic the Hedgehog LMAO. Cuz of that one Rainbow Dash vs Sonic video. Technically was Shurei’s “OC”, but the only thing I did with her was that she was Rose’s sister. I don’t think Shurei even drew her.

(Shurei made a more current genderbend/human Sonic design, which I used for Facility X-535’s Cycle 0… Maybe a Enzo scenario, where they’re technically the same person, but very different.)

Ignite was just an evil version of Rose, cuz around that time I got into the Sonic.EXE stuff. I don’t remember what else I did with her. Probably tried to throw hands with Rose, idk

Now, Kya and Zoria were both based on childhood friends that I’ve lost contact with. Younger me always drew Kya with a katana for some reason…? Their original names were “Diamond (real name)” and “Princess (real name).”

The Legend of Zelda is my all time favourite game series and I love watching how it is going forward. While I played Spirit Tracks before Twilight Princess was the title that got me into the series big time and I am eternally thankful for it especially as that was during a hard time in my life. It sparked my great love for wolves (Wolf Link my beloved) and generally influenced me in more way than I probably know. I would also say it was the first game I really went into as a gamer. That's why I was mainly inspired by Link's Tunic from Twilight Princess. I adjusted some things for me though. So yeah this artwork is very personal so I am glad I could give it a new touch. Also just in case someone is asking this pedestal exists in no game exactly like that I made it up.

Yeah, I do! I don't do too much with them in specific since they happen to fall to the back of my mind quite often as I don't exactly think about these characters too much (My mind gets very preoccupied). However, here are a list of some that i own.

I haven't used this oc since maybe mid 2022 as she was just made as a one-off rule 63 joke lmao

-Bandy (She/Her) (Hundreds of years old. Physically in her 30s) Bandy's the main girly who trained the Isle of Derivia cast as children. Was my first ever sapphic character i made in the ye olde year of 2021. Undyne-based. i love bandy. don't do much with her as there isn't too much to do with her? Maybe in the future I'll expand on her backstory even further, but I'm very happy with what she turned out to be. she's also one of my ocs who have gone through barely any cosmetic change, fun fact!

-Roze (They/Them) (Physically/mentally 12, hundreds of years old.) Thorne's twin sister, biromantic-asexual.
