Another problem is that a lot of mills have closed since 2020. Mills closing down was already a problem prior to the pandemic, but it did accelerate a bit afterward. Anyway, this means that certain blends of spinning fiber and already-spun yarn are harder to come by. (I recently went through my own "how are there so few sock options that are a wool/silk/mohair blend? Do people not KNOW how amazing that is???" Ravelry search, so I totally get the frustration.)
The only thing I can recommend, if you don't already know how to spin, is if you find a discontinued yarn you like, save a search for it on eBay. A lot of people--especially elder Millennials and older--still use eBay for destashing purposes, so you see a lot of harder-to-find discontinued yarns on there.
Otherwise, if the difficulty persists along with the continued decline in mills that produce the blanks for indie dyers, I'd recommend learning to spin, although unless you're one of those people who pick it up right away you're gonna be a couple years off from making a sock yarn you're happy with. It's not for everyone, so I get it if it's not in the cards for someone--I mean, I just started an opposing-ply sock yarn the other day and I'm already dreading how long this is going to take, and I *like* spinning--but if it's something you're interested in it can open up all kinds of yarn possibilities. (And ignore the weirdos who tell you that you need a wheel--I spent my first 10 years spinning on drop spindles, amd even if you want a wheel you can find them secondhand.)
No-Nylon Sock Yarn
This might be the hardest task for knitting without plastic. I’ve gone to some local stores and snooped around online looking for sock yarn and every time I do I get the same canned response.
“You know those will wear out, right?”
It’s easy to find 100% wool yarn, even non-superwash (yes superwash yarn contains plastic), but you’ll be darning them often if you wear them very much.
So is it fruitless? Well no, there are non-plastic alternatives to nylon that can give a yarn strength, such as mohair and silk. There are construction techniques too that a good sock yarn should have regardless. High ply-count and longer fiber strands, for example. BFL wool is notorious for its longer staple length, so does corriedale and targhee. And if the ply is 4 or more it will make for a better sock yarn foundation.
The most trouble I’ve run into now has been finding yarns that can fit this bill.
I’ve spent the past week trawling through Ravelry’s advance search for yarn, and the process has been slow and insightful. The more particular I search, “silk OR mohair, AND wool, AND NO manufactured fibers, 4-ply OR 5-ply+, AND NO superwash, AND not discontinued”, the less results I get. But still, there are results.
One would expect, with a search this tailored, you’d have at least a list of options, but I’ve still hit roadblocks. These come in two main forms: insufficient tagging or unavailable for purchase.
I cannot count how many times I’ve found a yarn that got me excited, only to click on the about page and read “80% SW Wool”. ‘SW’ meaning superwash. Or even worse, no mention of superwash on the about page, and then finding out the yarn is in fact superwash when I went to a retail listing. It makes me ask, if you’re using superwash wool, why not tag that as part of the care instructions so it can be searched through Ravelry? Why use superwash wool at all if you’re just going to recommend people handwash only?
The other pitfall is that these small dyers (as the majority of them are) don’t have the stock or have all together discontinued dying, yet haven’t updated their yarn’s about page to show it’s no longer available. Or, equally sad, when there’s simply no buying option available at all. Ravelry doesn’t always find every online store, so I try to look up the producer by name, and this sometimes gets me to an Etsy shop--But still, some yarns just seem to exist on their about page but nowhere else.
Still, I’ve managed to make a short list of yarns that pass the inspection and have some method for purchase. And honestly, all you need is one good product line for a lifetime of knitting if it fits all the bills. But I look at the number of yarns I could otherwise choose but are now discontinued (1/4th of them!) and wonder how long my current list will last.
So remember to support small dyers and yarn makers, and do your due diligence to make sure you’re getting the right product.

Today's Fiberuary Prompt is favorite color. Hardest question. Green. My daughter has smacked a green shirt out of my hand when we were shopping together. She was trying to stop the madness. 😂 But, I also love purple like crazy. I painted my room deep purple when I was a teenager. I am also a fall person, so I'm drawn to oranges and burgundy or crimson shades. Color? Yes, please. My entire rav shop is 20% off right now. Celebrating my new releases. Thanks to @knitdesignsbytian and Sock Crush for supporting my work. Much love! Both patterns are knit in Shirley Brian Yak Sock Yarn. Very pleasant to knit with and so much pretty! "Love It or Leaf It" was knit in the shade "Emerald City". "Bruised Orange" was knit in "Team Logan". #shirleybrianyarn #yarniverse #sockcrush #patternsale #knitdesigners #knitdesignersofig #knittersofig #knittersofravelry #ravelryknitter #ravelrypattern #knitsock #knitsocks #sockknittersofinstagram #sockknittersofig #fiberuary #fiberuarychallenge #knitallthesocks #knitallthethings https://www.instagram.com/p/BtzSUdtFI07/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rsvxijvu40rd

Day 2 of visiting my aunt and uncle! We went to another yarn shop (because they obviously love me!) And this shop was easily just as great as the one the day before. I picked up some worsted weight wool for a stocking cap pattern I've always wanted to try (hopefully I remembered correctly that the yarn is supposed to be worsted weight). It's more of a greeny teal than shown in the picture.
I love when shops include cute bonuses when you make a purchase! Center of the Yarniverse gave me a strawberry stitch marker charm and a coconut mango teabag. I love tea 🍵

Oh, the local yarn/craft store is a fantastic resource idea, and - while my grandmother taught me - I know far more folks lately who learned crochet/knit from YouTube. It's fascinating! And most obviously, the Tumblr crochet community is incredibly inviting and helpful to answer questions and assist with stumbles. They are my yarn family. 🤗❤🏠🌳
Best wishes, you-sweet-newbie-you, and welcome to the yarniverse! 😚
I want to start knitting or crosse (crose). But no one in my life know how to do it. How did you start? Sorry for my bad English.
Hi!
I was taught by my mother, both knitting and crochet. If you don’t know anyone who can teach you, you can always stop by a local yarn shop or craft store to see if they offer lessons. If those aren’t available to you, you could check Ravelry for knitting groups or crafters in your area, same with Facebook.
If after all that you still can’t find anyone, Youtube is a great source for learning. There are a lot of tutorials online to help you get started. The internet can always be a friend.

The yarnivers is split very solidly into three camps:
Ravelry--the big, progressive leaning, middle
The White Wing -- The Yarniverse had its own racial reckoning in January, 2019, following the publication of an article about a white woman traveling to India that was full of all sorts of imperial, colonial tourism tropes. The author has apologized repeatedly for the post and has done the hard work to learn and grow. But as happens when people start talking about race in America, a group of white people and their allies get angry as they try to uphold the racist systems they benefit from. Many of these conversations took place on Ravelry. When Ravelry rightly labeled pro-Trump speech as hate speech, this group canceled Ravelry right back.
Too Woke for Ravelry-- Ravelry updated their website, and like all big social media websites, when they updated it there was a BACKLASH. While the new design was made with people with vision impairments in mind, the design was triggering to people with photosensitivity. And the response was handled as well as you would expect a team of white 5 women to handle several hundred thousand angry people. Many people were hurt and felt that Ravelry was not doing enough to be a welcoming space for all. They canceled Ravelry as a result. There is now a dark mode feature but many bridges were burnt.
And where can you follow the ever crazy and amazing politics of the yarniverse? Instagram. That is one place all groups interact.
Today I found out that yarners think crocheting socks is subversive and controversial and I just…on one hand, why the fuck not, I guess yarners are allowed to have their controversies, but on the other, how much time do you have in your FUCKIN DAY??
