Watching WTNV make a sudden resurgence on Tumblr has been wild and delightful but what’s really been striking me about the passage of time has been seeing the recent fanart.

Because unlike back in the day when the majority of Cecil fanart depicted him via...a narrow consensus, most of what I’m seeing of Cecil now barely even represents him as a person, anymore.

He’s the Night Vale 👁, now.

And if he is humanoid? Then his face is...hidden. Blurred or otherwise made indistinct. In the time that he’s been gone, Cecil is no longer a mere Tumblr Sexyman.

He is a Sexy Eldritch Horror, now.

I remember being 18–19-ish when I started listening to wtnv. I wanted to draw Cecil, but could never settle on what he would wear because I thought the clothes I liked would look silly on a grown ass man. Who dresses like that?

Now I'm 31 and I have realised that, indeed, the clothes I wear when I feel the most confident are those same outfits. And I love it.

They have pictures up on the wall of the drama classroom of all the different shows they've done. I got bored one day last semester and counted all the different pics with Cecil in them (38). He was the lead guy in 35 of them.

But seriously, though, you don't get picked to be the next Voice of Night Vale without being some kind of theatre kid.

Every once in a while I think about that one post explaining how when you ship two characters it's because you relate to/kin one of them and have a crush on the other one

And it is true for me at least 70% of the time

Even when I start to ship two characters I don't know very well yet, they usually end up fitting in those categories somehow

I started listening to Welcome to Nightvale and I’ve listened to the first 7 episodes and I love it. It’s weird enough that I go okay cool vibes about most of the stuff, and there’s enough pointed comments about police and government that I’m like yes that is Bad Government TM absolute mood. I love how things keep popping up and I love that there’s no huge storyline and I love the white guy in the racist hat slander and this podcast is scratching a brain itch I didn’t know I had.
