I love your storytelling! I was wondering if you’d give tips for outlining and planning a story, I adore your pacing and different arcs. I’m new to writing and I’m having trouble keeping things cohesive even with an outline and I just wanted to know if you had any perspective or tips to share. Don’t feel pressured to answer. I love your replica au and hope you are doing well!
Aw thank you so much!  Sure I can talk about that.  Mind you aside from a screen writing course I took in college I am entirely self taught.  This is just information I’ve absorbed and worked out over the past couple decades of personal writing. More below the cut.
Tumblr media
WRITING/OUTLINING STYLE
For starters you need to figure out what style of outlining works for you.  I’ve been told there are two types  of writers.   The Architect and the Gardener.  The Architect is someone who has the entire framework plotted out and builds off of that.  The Gardener starts with a basic setup and lets the story flow naturally and chronologically from there, basing it entirely off of their extensive knowledge of the world, characters, and how they interact within it.
There are draw backs to both sides. Gardeners can often times write themselves into a corner or lose track of where the story should go (leading to lots of unnecessary fluff and loose ends).  While architects have a habit of ignoring a lot of the important “middle stuff” that leads to their major predetermined plot points and sometimes don’t realize how the story is naturally leaning in other directions, making it jarring when they try to force it back on track.
I like using both methods but in different situations.  For example before I even put pen to paper I already knew what I wanted the beginning and ending of Replica to be as well as a few pivotal scenes. I had a basic framework.  However that framework has grown and changed over time as I’ve nurtured it.  So I’ve come up with my own term I like to call “the Greenhouse Method,” where you may create the basic framework but understand that things within it can change and warp the structure to something entirely new. Just make sure it doesn’t go too off course.
That method may not work for everyone  so I recommend looking inward to see what variation of the methods work best for you.  Because if you’re not enjoying the process then there’s no point.
With this method I tend to list out major scenes of importance and then slowly figure out how they flow or cut into each other.  Doing this involves several other factors I will state below

THEMING
One important thing is to know what is the theme or message of your story.  This doesn’t have to be obvious but every good story normally has an underlying theme.  There needs to  be a point.  For example, Sherk is about accepting yourself for who you are.  Jurassic Park is a warning about playing God.
Replica at its core is about cherishing your self worth and holding onto hope and loved ones even in the darkest times.  Even when they’re not there anymore.
Whatever it may be, find that theme that means something to you, and make sure that feeling stays with you and the plot, even if subtly.
CHARACTERIZATION
Have a strong knowledge of the characters in your story.  I achieve this by doing little exercises on how they would react to certain incidents or answering questionnaires.  By doing this it allows them talk to each other within any scene I have setup but leave void of my own input. Instead I simply take notes rather than force them to say something they’re supposed to say (very Gardener style).  Often times letting the characters be themselves allows them to say and do things I find far more entertaining than what I initially had planned.
It’s important with characters though that you make sure you let them be themselves rather than have them act out for pure drama/plot sake.  I see that a lot in fan communities where characters will begin to cry or overreact in ways that seem out of character and it can really break my immersion. So know your characters.  Know everything about them from what their favorite cookie is to how they deal with trauma.  It’s all important to lead to the most natural of interactions.
SCENES
When plotting out scenes make sure that every one of them has a point. Every single scene.  If there is nothing new to be learned, or changed, or shared, then there is no point beyond a few brief sentences to transition it to the next important scene.  Avoid fluff that is just fluff for the sake of fluff.  You can have fluffy scenes, sure, but make sure there is something else to be gained from it.  I’ve read scenes that are literally just the same character harping over the same issue they’ve been dealing with without coming to any new conclusion or going through any sort of change, be it internal or external from the plot.  I don’t like having my time wasted as a reader and neither should you as a writer!
THE ZONE
I don’t see many people talk about this but I think it’s important for any writer to find a space where they can zone out and let the story bloom in their mind. No judgement, no analyzing, just pure fun. For some this happens in the shower, or sitting in front of the laptop with a cup of tea, or me driving too fast down the freeway blasting music in my ears.  I come up with all my best stuff while driving.  Sometimes I will extend a drive just to finish a scene properly.  Whatever it is, find what helps you get in that zone and see if you can play something out in your head.  It helps keep me inspired for sure. If you've managed to come up with something you like, make sure to write it down and then come back to it later to look at it from a more analytical perspective. Does it work with my theme? Are the characters reacting realistically? Where does this happen in the timeline and how can it impact future store plot points? Etc.
EXTRA: EASY MISTAKE TO AVOID
This isn't so much about outlining, just writing in general, but when you start writing, be sure to choose a tense and stick with it.  Many writers, myself included, prefer past tense.  Though I’ve seen some people do present that can work well.  Just make sure whatever you do stays consistent.
Example BAD: “Jane WENT to the store, hoping to find some crackers.  She  SPEAKS with the clerk to ask if he had any.”
Example GOOD: “Jane WENT to the store, hoping to find some crackers.  She  SPOKE with the clerk to ask if he had any.”
SUMMARY
Know your theme/message
Know your characters
Know your genre
Every scene should have a point and be interesting in some way
Recommend for beginners having an idea of where you want the story to conclude and see how that links up with your theme
Hope that helps.  Sorry if I went off on a tangent but I feel like a lot of the story telling process is interconnected when done correctly.  Let me know if you have any more specific issues you want addressed!

I'm working on a few fanfictions, but I need to know. Do people care for backstory, not for Y/n /reader, but for the stuff that caused the main event to happen? Less character dialogue and a bit more words? It's not going to stay like that, but like.. let me know, don't chicken out!

I am such a lovely author hehehe when my fic comes out I will demand praise for my action scenes because just now I finished 45 minutes of intense research towards how to do them and no longer consider myself a failure on the subject. You may now kiss me in gratitude.

Week 4 - Photo a day Challenge
Week Four - Photo a day Challenge
Week four is the last week for the photo a day challenge I signed up for. I’ve had a lot of fun trying to find something everyday to photograph in line with the daily theme. I admit some days I didn’t get very close, some days the connection was tenuous to say the least, but other days I think I really nailed it. As with the others in this series, these are all photos taken with my smart phone

Word by Word
What change, big or small, would you like your blog to make in the world? Not sure if my blog does make any change in the world. It’s just some musings, and not every post has a special meaning. I started this when I was still actively serving in a parish; you can tell by the photo I chose for the cover. Then I tried my hand at creative writing and some sermonizing, but I am not sure how that

How to Write Science Based Magic
How to make your world's magic make sense!
Magic in itself makes no sense, which is why we call it magic. With that being acknowledged, many authors have created their own science to the magic that they have come up with. There is no rule for your magic having to have rules to it, but the reader often will find your writing more interesting if there's lore for them to understand. It gives the fandoms something to argue about, meaning they’ll talk more about it.
There are a few classic forms of magic that you’ll see, so I’ll go through each one that I know and explain how you can throw some logistics into this world you’re building. I would like to make a disclaimer that none of this information should be used in real life by someone who's not a certified scientist in a lab with safety precautions. If you try these things in real life, you’re an idiot and then I’ll have to take this down. Now let’s get into it!
First up is a well known classic and what some people would call elemental magic, which includes fire, ice, earth, air, and then you can even add dimensional, light, dark, forbidden, lunar, etc. if you want to get spicy. For these kinds of things, you can learn what elements you actually need for different reactions.
One of my favorite examples is something that probably got me on a watch list for researching, and I called it an explosion bomb spell. It’s when a thermite is placed on top of ice and ignited with the help of a flame, as the ice is immediately set on fire which causes a large amount of heat to be released in the form of an explosion. This would be water, earth, and fire magic.
The next example is what I called a fire breeze, which is a reaction between diethyl zinc (chemical element) and water, air, or anything else that can accept 2 electrons OR one proton. Another is one that is debatably worse than the bomb one is called land mine, which is the careful reaction of iodine and ammonia, by reacting iodine with an aqueous ammonia solution. The result is an extremely sensitive contact explosive.
Another form of magic is alchemy, which is defined as the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. I’m going to tell you a bunch of alchemical reactions you can use in your stories, which includes some kind of chemical or element being mixed with heat, physical contact, etc
Since this includes so many possibilities, I’m going to include 4 of my personal favorites.
First is Nitrogen Triiodide and physical contact. The compound is formed through the careful reaction of iodine and ammonia, by reacting iodine with an aqueous ammonia solution. The result is an extremely sensitive contact explosive. Small amounts will explode with a loud, sharp snap when touched even lightly with a feather, releasing a purple cloud of iodine vapor.
Next is Ammonium Dichromate and Heat, which when ignited decomposes exothermically, producing sparks, steam, and nitrogen gas, like a mini volcanic eruption. It also produces green chromium (lll) oxide "ash." Ammonium dichromate has been used in pyrotechnics, photography, and lithography. It can also be used as a mordant for dyeing pigments.
Next and one of my personal favorites is potassium chlorate and sugar, which can be represented by a gummy bear experiment you may or may not have heard about. Gummy bears would be dropped into potassium chlorate, then a drop of sulfuric acid added as a catalyst, and you then get two chemicals that are reacting violently with each other. They release large quantities of heat energy, forming a spectacular purplish flame, and a great deal of smoke in a combustion reaction.
Finally I have NaK Alloy, a metal alloy that is formed through mixing sodium and potassium without air, and water. The heat given off by this reaction rapidly melts the sodium and potassium and is often enough to ignite the hydrogen gas produced. It might go off in air normally, but when you add water you get a much better explosion.
Our last form of magic is going to be what I refer to as basic matter creation, which basically consists of each person having a specific type of magic. It’s similar to what you see with the magic books in Black Clover, or the Chakra you see in Naruto. It doesn’t have to be genetic though, and you can form it out however you want and still get some science in there.
With this form you want to use more physics and chemistry, as these are quite literally the sciences of all physical matter. I have to say that this is quite literally my least favorite type of science based magic, but I’m still going to explain it to the best of my abilities. I’ll start with stating the states of matter, including the ones you don’t see in your day to day lives.
Solid has a defined shape and volume, liquid has a defined volume but no defined shape, and then gas lacks both defined shape and volume. Those are the three you’ve known for your whole life, as it defines the surface world that lives around us. The next few are more complicated and will include detailed descriptions, so take that as you will.
Plasma lacks both defined shape and volume, however the particles are charged electrically and are separated by longer distances. An example of plasma would be lightning and the aurora. Next is glass, which is an amorphous solid intermediate that is between a crystalline lattice and a liquid. It’s only occasionally referred to as a different state of matter though.
Next we have a superfluid, which is a secondary liquid state that only occurs at absolute zero, meaning it has zero viscosity. This means it moves around with zero friction, making it faster and lighter than your average liquid. Next is dropleton, also known as a quantum fog, because it has electrons and holes that flow much like a liquid. I believe this might include the fog you get from incense that flows like water, but I can’t find any evidence to confirm this.
The last form of matter is actually the state of not being matter at all! It’s called gravitational singularity, and it’s used to describe the center of a black hole. It is not a state of matter, but it has to be noted because it’s still an ‘object’ formed by mass and energy that lacks matter.
Now that you know this, you can classify your matter based magic by these standards, or you can throw this information away and do it your own way. It doesn’t matter how you write your story, because at the end of the day it’s YOUR story. I might be biased though, but I love a fantasy story that has a bit of realism. It’s the type of surrealism that some readers get a kick out of, and it’s also something other readers might hate. If you decide you want to use it, though, you know where to come for the information you need!

Writescapade: New Beginnings
Life in college is never easy, but the experience that you’ll be getting from it will help you grow and mold you into the person that is prepared to conquer the wonders of reality. It is a phase in your life where you’ll be meeting new people, and have the opportunity to know yourself better.
Tumblr media
Be the witness of my growth as a writer. As I write about my experiences, learnings, and personal reflections about my course. Allow me to share some events and activities which I think is helping me grow as a writer, and as a student.
Becoming a Communication student, I am exposed to the wide array of mediums that are used in conveying messages. It could be through television, cellphone, radio, newspaper, and a lot more. Aside from those, we are also taught on how to maximize or use the aforesaid mediums. Writing in New Media is one of my major subjects right now and with this subject, we, students are being taught on how we navigate our way, write and deliver our message with the help of the new media. This course aims to expose the students with the techniques that are used in writing for new media.
What is New Media?
You might be wondering what “new media” is. Let’s cut to the chase and go directly to the point. New media is the digital technology around us that helps us get in touch or connected with one another regardless of the distance between the sender and receiver. It is a diverse medium composed of diverse audience that are being connected with the help of the internet. Therefore, the audiences in the new media doesn’t have to be located within a specific geographical location.
Tumblr media
With the help of new media, it became easier for us to connect and continue with our work and academics during this pandemic. The new media made it possible for us to have our classes at the comfort of our own home. Aside from that, it gave businesses a chance to continue their works or even market their products or services with the help of the online platform. Based on an article by the Carrier Clinic (2019), there are three positive sides when it comes to our exposure to the new media: (1) anonymity, (2) 24/7 availability, and (3) No geographical limitations.
With the help of anonymity, people are able to share their personal problems and vent it to the public. I, myself, can relate to this and I, to be honest, find it therapeutic. Back in 2016, Tumblr became my diary. It is the platform that I use to vent or even rant about whatever that have happened to me. It is also the first thing that I update whenever there’s something good that happened to me. It was a phase where almost everyone was using Tumblr to share their personal dramas and curate a ‘blog’ that has a playlist on it. It was a time where people can confess their deep darkest secrets without getting canceled.
Knowing that people are 24/7 available, is both a blessing and a curse that we’ve been living by since this pandemic started. When the idea of having online classes and work-from-home set-up came, a lot of people forgot to set boundaries. They forgot to have their own personal space. All of a sudden, it was a chaos of events. You no longer have a sleeping pattern, you tend to focus more on your socials non-stop, you began sending emails or even work-related messages in the middle of the night. All of the happened because we thought that the availability of a person is now 24/7 since he/she is just at home.
Tumblr media
I actually admire how times have changed and allowed us to communicate with no geographical limitations. As a daughter of someone who is always away from his family, having this limitless access is making it easier for me to connect with my father who is working abroad. Sending a life update or a simple how my day went allows him to witness and feel that he’s with us while we’re growing. We may not see each other physically, but the internet is making it possible for us to connect with each other. Having all these being said, we can say that the internet is making it possible for us to have a network society.
Tumblr media
What is Network Society?
In simple terms, it is the process of sharing information within a social network that is made possible with the help of the internet and/or mobile devices. According to Castell, these social networks are efficient for us, humans, because it allows us to be complex, dynamic, and innovative. The evolution of this Network society allowed us to change social dynamics.
An example that I could think of where network society allowed us to change the dynamics of our society is the #BlackLivesMatter movement. This movement wasn’t just a street movement or rally that are composed of African Americans. It was a movement which first started on Twitter due to the death of George Floyd. It was known as a movement which first started as a worldwide trending hashtag. The death of Floyd was then followed by a series of racist acts among these law enforcers which therefore, triggered the majority to rally and use their voices to fight for the rights and lives of the black Americans.
Tumblr media

The opportunity that the network society have opened for us shall be used meaningfully. At the end of the day, our simple words, posts, or even hashtags could save or even change the lives of other people. As they say, use your platform to serve as a voice to those who are unheard.
For now, this would be the end of my first blog post. I am hoping that these basics will make it easier for you guys to understand my future writescapades. Get to know more about writing for new media and, of course, myself as I unravel more of my learnings, insights, and personal experiences with my next blog posts. Ciao!

Write The Story You Are Afraid To Tell by Kelli McNeil via FilmCourage.com.
Film Courage: How does someone know which story they should write?
Kelli McNeil, Writer, Actress and Voice Over Artist: You should write the one you are afraid to tell. If it scares you then you know you need to do it. I have a couple right now that I’m working on. I have a play that is going to be off-Broadway next year. It was actually one of the very first pieces of writing I had ever done. I was in a group called the Los Angeles Writers Center for years when I was kind of dipping my toe into writing and decided I wasn’t very good at it.
But I had written a play (it’s a 2-act play). I wrote it in 2007 and it’s actually scary how applicable it is to today’s current climate. It’s about a Mexican-American soldier who is injured in Iraq and his illegal brother is killed while they are serving over there.
So this is right after 9/11. He comes back to Los Angeles and he discovers that his two younger siblings have been put into foster care and his parents have been deported. And I wrote this in 2007. It’s called BORDERLINE. It was actually a semi-finalist at AFF last year. Again, as soon as I started to build up my own confidence in my writing I took up some stuff and dusted them off and started to submit them out. And a friend of mine (who I went to USC with) who runs a theater up in Manhattan and this is an issue that she’s very passionate about. I’ve never connected the dots before, but I sent it to her and she said

Beginning Writing
You've decided to write a story and that's great.. if you can ever get started.
I've seen many posts of people posting writings of books that they say they are never going to write, which in my mind is sad but completely understandable.
When I first started writing, I had absolutely no problem. All I would do is type what I wanted and try to create a story.
Which was fine at the time and it helped my writing skills grow. Looking back though, I was really just writing words not a story.
That's why I hate the advice that in order to write, you need to just start writing.
Like of course we need to write, no one expected the book to magically start writing itself.
I mean I wish, but that's not how it works.
I never understood having a hard time getting started though, until I took a Creative Writing class. 4/10 would not recommend if you want to be a writer or author.
I'll get into Creative Writing classes another time though.
In this class, we had an assignment to write a short fantasy story, which sounded great. I WRITE FANTASY.
Except, no matter what I tried, I couldn't write. Mainly cause it was a short story which are like the bane of my existence, but anyway these are some things that I tried to help myself begin to write.
Firstly, have an Idea
I know. It sounds so simple.
But it's true.
In order to write your story, you need to have an idea. Or rather multiple ideas.
But to start off, you really need about 3 ideas.
You need to have an idea about what you want your main story to include,
Ex. The main story I'm writing has to do with a magical race of people, the "Guardians of Magic"
You need to have an idea about what you want your main characters to look like, also how they act and information like that
Characters
Ex. The main character in my stories is a boy from Cuba who moved to Colorado at age 10 and is now just finding out that he is a part of a magical race of people.
He has anxiety, is very awkward, and a flaw of his is selfishness.
His hair color is brown, eyes are brown, and his skin is tanner from his mom being Cuban but his dad being from Spain.
I'll talk more about characters in another post just because your characters will make or break your story but there is too much to type on my phone at 3 am.
Before I quit talking about characters though, please try to have an antagonist in mind before you start the next part. Otherwise it's gonna be kinda hard.
Also keep in mind that an antagonist can be a person, like Voldemort in Harry Potter, but can also be other things, i.e. Cancer in The Fault in Our Stars.
Ready to move on?
After you have these two VERY IMPORTANT parts, you can move onto #3,
PLOTS
Otherwise known as the annoying thing that every story needs. Trust me, I've tried writing without one.
First thing, make a general plot. Decide what you want to happen in your story. A good way to do this is to think of how you want your story to end and then begin.
After that, you just gotta fill in the middle.
Ex.
My story begins in Colorado where the main character discovers that he is a part of this magical race (there's more too it but I'm not adding that much detail rn)
The ending of the story happens on a rooftop in Agravair, a city in my book. It's ends with two deaths, one being a hero and one being the person you think is going to be the main villian.
In between that I have major events, visiting cities and meeting people, and then between that I have minor events.
For me, the beginning is always the hardest to form. There's a lot of pressure when crafting the beginning of your book, because it is what hooks the reader in.
That being said the beginning is a vital part of your book, and should be seen as such. Trying to hook your readers in though, that's a bit more personal to the story.
The way I created my latest hook was by researching the best first sentences in stories. I read through a lot of different sentences and was able craft one of my own. This is very tricky though, and the first hook you ever come up with, you're not gonna use.
Ex.
My first hook (it's really not even a hook) -
"When I open my eyes the morning light shines through the shades and into my apartment sized room."
The hook in the current version of my story -
"My name is Elias Altan Winters and there is an eighty-six percent chance that I will die before my eighteenth birthday."
The idea behind my latest hook was to interest the reader as to why there is a eighty six percent chance of dying before the main characters 18th birthday. People are naturally curious and will want to know how something works or why something is the way it is or what happened.
I'll talk more about plots and beginnings at some point, but for now let's move on to the middle of your story.
As I said earlier, you're middle is composed of major and minor events. For now, focus on the major events.
At some point, you will have to add minor events into your plot, otherwise the story will go from one major thing to another which can be a bit overwhelming for the reader.
Besides that, your middle should contain multiple major events that your protagonist either wins or loses.
Ex. From my book...
Going into Fae Territory
Meeting Darik and Anders
Playing a game with GameMaker
And then in between that I have smaller events, which if you're just starting off, you should probably hold off adding until your ready.
Characters pt. 2
Now, you should take a handful of supporting and minor characters to start you off. (Keeping in mind that you will add many many more as time goes on)
Supporting characters are characters than are not focused on my the main narrative but appears or is mentioned more often than a minor character and have more than just a cameo appearance.
Ex.
During plots I mentioned meeting Darik and Anders, who are two major supporting characters in my story
Darik is a lighthearted, humorous guy who is overprotective of his friends and family and helps the main character out a couple times in Book 1, but is a part of the main plot in Book 2
Anders is Darik's best friend. He is more calm and serious but still has a sense of humor and goofs off with Darik a lot. Anywhere Darik is, he will be. And anywhere Anders is, Darik will be right next to him. Again, he helps the main character in Book one, but is a part of the main plot in book 2
Another example who is more prominent in my book one is Trandor.
Trandor is the best friend of Alias who lived in Colorado for years to keep an eye on Alias, after they first meet. He journeys with both of the main characters, the first being Elias, or Alias as people call him, and the other not being mentioned at the moment.
He's like the Grover or Ron of my story
Don't skip this character, it's important to give your main character friends.
Minor characters should really only show up once or twice in your story. Maybe they help the main character in some way at some point but that's it, you really shouldn't see them again.
Again, these are vital characters because it shows an array of people in your story. That way the whole story isn't just focused on one or two or three people.
I'm going to say this a couple times because it is super important and will happen no matter what but it's nice to hear sometimes.
EVERYTHING BESIDES THE MAIN IDEA OF YOUR STORY WILL MOST LIKELY CHANGE.
One more time, worded differently
Almost everything in your story is going to develop and not be the same as when you first began.
And thank goodness for that because the first version of my story was terrible.
But your characters may change, your plot probably will change, and that is perfectly normal and in my opinion GOOD.
The characters and plot developing shows your writing developing with it.
The first version of my story was told from a different persons point of view even. But the story and characters developed with me so that they are way better than before.
So while I hate the advice, just start writing, that's really what you need to do.
Things will develop and get better, but only if your writing begins to develop too.
So now you're probably like, great, but I already have an Idea, characters and a plot, okay so then what's #2
Secondly, write what you can see
I know that that sounds really weird but that's what I do.
I write what I can see in my head.
So even if the first thing you can actually see in your head is of a fight scene and you have no idea when it happens, WRITE IT
The idea with that is that you are developing your writing and that as you do this, parts of your story will fall into place.
So yeah you don't always have the start at the begining. Sometimes you can begin in the middle of nowhere and figure things out from there.
The idea is just to write anything that comes to mind. You might not use everything that you wrote, but writing some of these scenes should help others fall into place.
They're also fun to go back and re-read when your bored and in need of nostalgia.
The end for now.
Yes, I do have more things that might help people start writing, but this is already pretty long so we'll start here from now and I may do a Part 2 later.
If you made it this far, congrats.
You must be really desperate because I don't know how could my advice really is.
See ya later Tumblr

Prompt Writing 101
Prompt 3: Your main character was at home, in bed sleeping peacefully until they heard their alarm go off.
There’s a burglar who has entered their home. Scared and alarmed, your main character takes the bat from under the bed and decides to investigate.
Upon meeting the burglar -they notice something odd on them. Besides the gorgeous blue eyes and beauty mark on their face, the burglar also has your main character’s initials.
As it turns out, your main character lives in a world whereas their significant other can only be identified with the initials tattooed on their bodies.
Looks like this burglar has some explaining to do.
