You have heard many tales of the Adeptus growing up, many stories and myths behind them, of their culture and their play in the archon war. However, you never had the fancy of coming face to face to one- well that was until today.

You lived a pretty normal life in Liyue. Working at BuBu Pharmacy along with Qiqi, your work was simple and it gave a good paycheck. You're a healer, mending wounds from battle-scarred warriors, or helping heal an infection. However, you were commonly found handing out medicine at the front desk more than anything.

You often see familiar faces of previous customers that stopped by to receive their meditation. Occasionally you have met some more interesting clients however they were never too enticing. And you thought that was how your work life was going to carry on. A bag of medication here, a customer other there, repeat till next paycheck.

You were thankful to have Qiqi by your side most of the time although she wasn't much of the conversationalist it was better than having no one to talk to, even if you were doing most of the talking.

" Goodbye, thank you for stopping by. I hope the headaches stop." You said handing the customer a small bag of medication. You waved them a quick goodbye as they disappeared from your line of vision.

Unlike most days, it was only you behind the desk. Qiqi was busy with other responsibilities and you were placed in charge of handing the listed medicine to clients. Scribbling off a name on a clipboard, you leaned against the desk waiting for the next customer to arrive.

Earlier in the day, you overheard a few of the Liyue guards stationed near the Pharmacy buzz about a battle that broke near Mt. Hula. They didn't share too many details on the source of the outbreak as they were called over to focus on another anomaly, but you manage to piece together that it had something to do with a sigil of permission. Note to self: Don't piss off the Adepti.

A few minutes pass and you were still meet with the eerily silence of the Pharmacy with the slight sound of the breeze. You caught a glimpse of a few civilians but they showed no interest in buying herbs or requiring medical attention. For the most part, the city seemed rather deserted. Sighing you turned on your heel to go to the back room.

However before a second could pass, you nearly jumped as three figures dashed into the Pharmacy. One of the two strangers was a young boy who had golden hair tied back into a braid, his clothes were particular as well. Cleary this boy wasn't from any of the seven nations. An Outlander. Beside the boy was a pixie-like figure, she had white hair and carried a celestial-like cape. The pair seemed rather familiar, well at least from what you heard from Qiqi. A few weeks prior Baizhou enlightened you on a pair of outlanders that tried to buy some medicine without making an appointment. By the description he provided it matched the blonde.

The third figure intrigued you the furthest. He looked around the same age as the outlander and yourself. He carried some intriguing items on his person. He had short raven hair accompanied by green undertones, his eyes are painted amber, vicious yet mysterious. His clothing was also rather unusual. He dressed in a sleeveless white shirt, dark pants, and leather gloves. What was peculiar most was the tattoo located on his arm. It had a slight teal glow to it and the pattern seemed complex. It finally clicked to you. It's an Adeptus.

Before you made more inferences and observations, it finally hit you that two strangers just ran into the Pharmacy with no warning. Both men's skin were littered with gashes. Small crimson cuts can be found in the areas where skin is shown, the gashes didn't seem to be severe but still would require some treatment. The blonde's eyes darted to you in a panic. " May we stay here for a while? (Omg he talks)."

It took you a second to register what they inquired of but you nodded your head. " sure." That was all you manage to muster. The trio went to sit down, sheathing their weapons away. " We won't be staying long." The raven-haired boy said, his tone cold. The mysterious aura that radiated off him, intrigued you.

You were once again submerged in uncomfortable silence. Your mind was trying to piece together a question to ask both men but no idea came to thought. You could already tell that the Adeptus was judging you his amber eyes burned into your head. Avoiding eye contact you instead focused your gaze on the pixie. Her crown thing was pretty interesting.

Finally, the blonde broke the silence that threatens to consume you whole. " Uh thank you again for allowing us to stay here, we'll be out of here soon." He flashed you an innocent smile which soothed your worries but only by a bit. " You guys can stay as long as you want. I'll get some bandages for your injuries." You finally croaked out, turning to grab said items.

You returned with the material handing out a handful of the clothed bandages to each of them. You watched as the blonde slowly placed the fabric on the cuts that threatened to worsen. The Adeptus on the other hand stared at the bandages you handed to him. He eyed the items as if they were a foreign object, but his eyes didn't sparkle in curiosity- they were just dull. Does this guy ever smile?

" These can help with the smaller cuts. The gush wounds, however, will require something different but not to worry you came in at the right time, I can use my elemental healing to mend those injuries before they get infected." The raven hair boy broke out of his dull stare from the items in his gloved hands, his eyes now glued to you. His gaze felt like it was pricing through your soul, intimidated would be an understatement. The blonde on the other hand was more grateful at your suggestion, the pixie fairy, who you learned is "Paimon" even chirped her own thanks.

Your eyes glimpsed at the raven-haired boy, his injuries looked more severe compared to the blonde who you soon learned was " Aether" as Paimon called him. " I'll tend to your wounds first," you murmured to the boy. He looked at you coldly, his posture shifted as more tension built. " Your injuries are more severe... I.... I just want to help," you mumbled. The boy turned away in thought, his eyes squinting at whatever was running through his head. " Listen it's either your injuries become infected, which will be a pain to resolve later or you let me help-which will be painless and you'll be leaving with no infections." You added, you didn't mean to make your voice sound harsh but now wasn't time to argue. The Adepti seemed taken back by this, his brows furrowing at your bold statement.

" Fine." So he does talk, you chuckled to yourself silently. Slowly you approached the boy, trying to not come off as a threat. You gently hovered the palm on your hand over one of the gashes that decorated his skin, the boy tensed at the touch but quickly relaxed. Silently you called for your vision, feeling your respective element pulsing to your fingertips as you mended the wound. A few seconds passed and after removing your hand, a smile crept to your lips satisfy to see the gash no longer littered on the boy's skin. You repeated this action a few times, mending the rest of the gashes. The boy on the other hand finally started to place the bandages on the smaller cuts. His shoulder drooped becoming more welcomed to yout touch.

Curious of the events that brought the trio here you asked, " may I ask what happened?" The raven-haired boy made no indication that he was going to respond but Paimon gladly answered. " There was a fight at Mt. Hula. Something really riled up the guards."

Oh, so this is what the guards were gossiping about. " I once again want to apologize for storming in- from what I heard BuBu Pharmacy was the best place to go for medicine and such in Liyue. And as you see from our current state..." Aether paused glancing down to his injured body. " Xiao and I will pay you for the trouble." Xiao, so that's his name. " We wouldn't even be in this mess if you haven't been sticking your nose into places it shouldn't be." Xiao retort sharply. Aether paid no mind to what he said. Man, is this guy is a cryo user- he's colder than Chongyun.

" Alright, I've finished mending your injuries, if you feel any discomfort let me know and I can get some painkillers." Xiao's head slightly perked up at the mention of 'painkillers' but said nothing about it. Instead, his attention went to look at the areas where crimson-colored injuries use to be before being cleansed by you.

You turned your attention to the outlander, reaching out to start cleaning his wounds. Before you could start however a voice pulled you back. " What's your name?" Xiao had his back to you but the tone of his voice wasn't so cold, it was warmer and that brought a smile to your lips. " I'm y/n." You replied turning to glance at him. ( While Aether waited patiently to be healed)

Xiao glanced over his shoulder, his gaze meeting yours.

" Thank you Y/n."

Biography

She was born in May 8 1973, in a pure blood family, with blood supremacy ideas but nothing that can't be redempt, (every time she said mudblood Rowan made her clean her mouth with soap until she stopped).

Her father becomes a deatheater to protect his family, her mother was a healer that constantly sneaked Order of the Phenix members into the Manor to help them with their wounds.

Because of the war Camila and Jacob spent most of their childhood travelling from London to Mexico lots, learning about prehispanic cultures and traditions, so is something that she has very present and is very proud of. While learning to talk both were taught English by their dad and Spanish by their mom. (Their grandma tried to teach them nahuatl but didn't succeed that much, they only are able to read it)

When Jacob received his Hogwarts letter they move to England definitely, where they were more introduce in the blood supremacy and taught how they should act in order to proud their family, and were raised with their cousins Leo, Ares and Apollo, the five of them sneak out of their places to Diagon Ally to avoid any lessons their family obliged them to take, there they would get in any store asking questions and being told stories by costumers and owners. When Leo and Jacob started at Hogwarts Ares, Apollo and Camila stop doing it (Camila's favorite place was flourish and bolt's).

While Jacob was at Hogwarts he told Camila many adventures he lived with Olivia and Duncan but she thought he was just inventing them for her to have good night stories.

Their mother was murdered mysteriously, but Jacob was convinced that R had to do with it, so he decided to leave, after an argument with his father and making sure Camila won't wake up when he left.

The first time she talked after her mum's death and her brother disappeared, was when she met Rowan, and the first time she laughed was when she share the compartment with Rowan and Ben on their first year, those are the memories she uses to conjure her Patronus.

I mean Lin is reserved with her emotions because everyone in her life has hurt her in some way shape or form.

Kya is half air nomad. It’s in her blood.

Toph:

Toph has never given her positive affirmation. Lin has been trying so hard to get some sort of praise from her and nothing. Toph never gave her attention and when it came time to have her back (when Suyin caused the scars) Toph basically betrayed her and covered for Suyin and made it all go away. Everything except the scars that will be permanently displayed on her cheeks.

I want to head canon that maybe...just maybe Toph didn’t realize the extent of the damage Suyin had caused to Lin. Toph could have thought that Lin was over-exaggerating on the markings. Also think for that reason she didn’t let Lin get immediate treatment from a healer which was crucial for healing time and less scaring to occur. Only giving Lin time to just “slap a bandage on and toughen up.”

Suyin:

Suyin was a brat as a kid. She valued her freedom and because of that she legit thought she was invincible and could get away with anything because her mom practically owns the city.

Suyin is the baby which frankly only further pushes the whole. Baby gets what she wants. Doesn’t apologize for any of her actions or thinks that a simple “sorry” erases everything. Lives in a “Me” world.

Suyin get’s in trouble for driving as an accomplice. Suyin gets send to go live with her rich grandparents who will spoil her with immense gifts. While Lin just stays in the city and continues to groveling work. Forced to get used to the markings Suyin left which she never apologized to Lin for.

Tenzin:

Tenzin left her. That’s the short version.

Tenzin was her best friend turned romantic life partner. Lin knew Tenzin since she could sustain memories. Every life moment it was always her and Tenzin, they were only a year apart so they grew up together. Later started to date and they grew up being each other’s support systems.

Although yes they did have love for each other, I feel like that love was always platonic. They confused that love for romance because everyone around them basically teased them of their hidden crushes. Once that idea gets put into your head it’s kind of hard to not think about it and your brain starts to be like “okay yeah maybe they are on to something”. I feel like it was more on Lin’s side than Tenzin. I think Tenzin for sure had a massive crush on Lin.

back to the reason... Tenzin and Lin are both so career driven that they worked tirelessly to become someone their respectful parents would be proud of. Lin as a police officer and eventual Chief of Police and Tenzin being a councilman and representative for the Air Nation.

Once Aang’s passing Tenzin got more pressed by himself (I’m sure from the rest of the world too) to start producing the next generation of air benders. Although I would like to believe that Tenzin respected and supported Lin’s wishes on her career goal. I feel like he wanted Lin to put a pause to help him carry his goal first. Which Lin was adamant on not doing. She never wanted kids and was never going to change. Tenzin probably hoped that after time Lin might change and in turn caused many fights and arguments. Tenzin hope he could have the best of both worlds, Lin and kids. unfortunately that wasn’t the case so after two decades of being with Lin he had to break up with her.

Tenzin is such an awkward bean so when he broke up with Lin he definitely broke up. Like cut off all communication with Lin, because he probably thought that would be best for Lin. The only time they would talk would be professional meetings when they had to see each other for council meetings. Security and protection details for the Air Nation. They went from best friends and each others support systems to practical strangers. Which was honestly worse, imo. Lin didn’t just lose a boyfriend. She lost her person. The one person she could rely on for anything. The person who knew her likes and dislikes. The one person she wasn’t afraid to let down her walls, let down her hair and let it flow. The one person who wouldn’t judge her when she cried or laughed. So when Tenzin left, it broke Lin. More than anyone could it was Tenzin that really caused Lin to close up and say no more.

Kya

Kya is half air nomad.

Kya is a spiritual being and likes to live in harmony with nature. She's fun-loving and had a strong sense of humor.

I feel like Kya often liked the idea of traveling the world to interact with other peoples and getting to know other cultures. Without the attachment of being the “Avatar’s daughter”. She wanted to be known as Kya and just Kya.

Which she did accomplish as she became a renowned healer in her own right. All of her years of traveling I’m sure spent learning on different healing techniques and properties to improve on. Kya is easily the best healer in Legend of Korra, which I’m sure her mother is beyond proud. She managed to keep Jinora alive for weeks despite her spirit no longer being tethered to her body and was capable of treating Bumi's head wound without water ever touching him. She even managed to heal Korra, Bolin, and Mako simultaneously with her spirit water. Three people at. the. same. time!!! The only thing that ever posed too big an issue was the metallic poison in Korra in season 3.

Kya is a person who would rather experience it rather than read about it or listen someone else share their life. She is open to listen to the stories but she wants to go out there and experience it herself.

Kya doesn’t have a problem with settling. She can stay at a place for a couple months at a time. The most maybe a year because she gets the itch to go set off to a new adventure.

White Butterflies, pt ii. || Hvitserk Lothbrok x Reader

This story doesn’t follow the plot, so you don’t have to know the story to understand it.

You sat in front of a mirror, plaiting your hair carefully, but losing the plait halfway through. You picked the strands of your hair up again, and began to plait, weaving the strands together until once again, you lost the plait. Frustrated, you let your hands drop into your lap, glaring at yourself in the mirror.

“You need to be more patient.” Hvitserk explained, having watched you fail the plait numerous times, “Keep practicing though, you’ll get it.”

You turned to face him, “Do them for me?” You asked, and he grinned, taking your hair in his hands, plaiting and weaving the strands away from your face. “I look more and more like a viking every day,” you joked, “though it wouldn’t be without you.” you stood up, face to face with him, and he kissed your cheek, “Hvitserk, there’s no one around, you don’t have to pretend.”

He drew back, eyebrows pulled into a light frown, “Pretend?” he whispered, he looked away. “But of course, no? Of course this is pretending - you can’t love me, I am a heathen, a savage. My Princess, how could you deal with such a person?”

“That’s not how I meant it,” you felt your throat stick, and your eyes begin to fill with tears, “The people at my old court, they-”

“They what?” he walked towards the door.

“Hvitserk,” you called, and he paused, “I have never met a couple who truly loved each other until I came here, and my parents… they hated each other, my father had mistresses and slaves, my mother was bitter.” He faced you, and you were inches apart, “My mother told me that I should expect nothing from this, that my only job would be to give you sons. I didn’t know it would be like this.”

“Y/N,” your mother grabbed your chin and pulled it up to look at her, harsh and unlovingly, her face tight and angry, “Do not cry in public. Do not cry in front of anyone you do not trust completely. Do not make us look weak.”

You wiped your eyes, “Mother, will it be terrible?”

“I tried, with your father. I was young, your age, and I was naive. I expected too much, and I can see that you do too.” she closed her eyes for a second, but when they opened again, she was stony-faced, “Give him sons, and you will manage. That is your one job, a son and our enmity will be truly over. You could at least be civil with him, but don’t hope too much, you’ve seen his… kind. You won’t love him, but you will love your children, that’s the one thing I know to be true.”

“Mother?” your eyes were dry now, but you felt more hopeless than you had ever felt, “What if they hurt me?”

“Y/N,” she drew your face up again, “You are a princess here, and you will be a princess there as well. They cannot hurt you without facing unimaginable consequences - from us, but also from God, and I’m sure from their false ones too. You are Princess Y/N, and you have brought peace to our nations, so don’t ever think you don’t have power.”

You stood at the end of the boardwalks, the sea stretched out before you, people passing past you, bringing supplies and food and furs. You looked at the people of your future nation, and at your fiance. You looked at your castle, at your brothers and father at the other end of the boardwalk. “Goodbye, Mother.”

“I doubt I’ll ever see you again, so I suppose I should say this; you will be missed.”

“You were scared of me then, when you first arrived,” he said, “are you still scared of me?”

You couldn’t answer that.

He picked up the first thing he saw and threw it straight at the mirror behind you. You shielded yourself as shards of glass fell over you, and watched as the floor below you mingled glass and blood and tears. You looked up at your husband, who stood, in shock of his own actions. You were dazed, but you heard him leave the tent, leaving you sitting in the broken glass.

The ointment on your back had stung, but it wasn’t so bad as the cut on your arm. The glass had impaled itself into your right forearm, and it had taken twenty minutes for the healer to stop it from bleeding. The bandage had been wound tight around your arm, and you couldn’t grip anything properly due to the way it had been wrapped. The thrall had had to redo your braids to get the glass out, but when she had redone them they had been different, but you didn’t ask her to redo them. The braiding this morning seemed so trivial to you now, you would never be a true viking. You had dressed well for supper, which apparently was going to be a big deal, but you were wondering what it would take for you to get out of it.

As you walked down the market street, you realised you had no friends, or allies, in the town. You knew no one who you could talk to, or who you could pass time with. After noon had long passed, so you wandered back down the coast, towards the docks, and then on to Floki’s home. When he saw your approach, he walked to you, curious, but restrained, he greeted you.

“Princess,” he said, with an air of mocking, “How can I help?”

“I just,” you looked at your feet, “I don’t know anyone here, and I thought you could offer me company.”

“Well,” he said, “I am busy, but I’m also not allowed to refuse. My company shall be you watching me build a boat.”

“As long as it means I’m not alone.” you sighed.

You watched carefully as the boat began to take a resemblance to the boat, the process intriguing and foreign to anything you had ever seen, but as the sun set, a slave came to find you, calling you back for the feast. You followed her path, but stopped when the hall came into view.

“Princess Y/N?” she walked back to you, “are you okay? You look pale.”

You gathered yourself, Do not cry in public, “Of course, just a little tired, is all.”

“You were not at the feast.” Theo said, sitting down beside you, and you looked at him from your bed.

“I was not.” You agreed, sitting up, “I feel ill, and Mother told my servants I was not to come, it would look bad in front of the Lords.”

“It was terrible without you,” he grinned, “Arthur threw a fit because he got insulted by this little twelve year old girl. He was insufferable the whole time, and Geoffrey’s betrothed insulted the family.”

“Why does this always happen while I am not there to see it?” You wondered, and Theo rolled his eyes.

“You’re the only one who Arthur won’t insult, and everyone likes you.”

“Don’t lie to me,” you laughed, “It’s because when it’s just you boys, no one can keep you in check.”

“You make us sound bad,” Theo laughed with you. “Come on, Geoffrey’s getting married next week and you need to be well enough. Let’s get you to the Doctor.”

You could almost feel how Hvitserk and his brothers were staring at the bandage. For the first time since you’d arrived, you felt no need to pretend - anyone could see how your relationship really was, it was plain by the cloth around your arm. Bjorn, on your other side, looked like he wanted to talk to you.

“Prince Bjorn, how are you fairing?” you asked, a fake smile adorning your face.

“I am well, but how are you?” he asked, and you decided he was kinder than his brothers.

“I am as well as I can be.” You lied, you could tell he wasn’t convinced.

“But, how are you and my brother?” he eyed the bandage.

You blinked, knowing that he would never have gotten away with such a question in your old home, but also knowing that this was a very different place. “I must be the happiest newly wed ever.” You glanced at your arm, and he swallowed.

“Listen,” he whispered, and you could feel Hvitserk staring at the back of your head, “I’ll talk to him. It’s not okay that he took his temper out… like that. I don’t know how your old culture felt about it, but here, it is a crime to do such a thing.”

“I think we both know how different our cultures were.” you reminded him, turning back to your meal. Back home, no one would have noticed, or if they did, it would be improper to do anything about it. “Bjorn, don’t do anything, it’s fine.”

You reached for the salt, but your inability to grip meant that it tipped, spilling onto the wooden surface of the table. The small crystals spilt over the edge, and you tried to tidy it up, so no to hassle the servants, but realised that no one had even noticed. You looked up, and Ubbe was staring at you across the table. You smiled politely, and tried to continue, but he stopped you.

“You don’t need to clear it up,” he chuckled, “we have servants for that.”

“My mother always believed that spilling salt meant bad luck,” you explained, “it’s a weird superstition, but she was never wrong about stuff like that.”

“Your mother was a very suspicious person,” Ivar interrupted, “No?”

“Yes, Your Grace,” you nodded, “My family don’t always have the best of luck.”

The room was silent, watching the conversation. You felt Hvitserk touch your hand, but you pulled it away. “And how do you mean that?” Ivar inquired.

“When there’s an opportunity for power, my family are the kind of people to take it.” you said, holding his gaze, “It’s not a habit that results in long lives. We have a habit of mysteriously disappearing or falling fatally ill.”

“And…” Ivar swirled his ale in his cup, “Would you say it iss worth it?”

Was getting poisoned worth the success of your family? “Absolutely.” you smiled, “After all, it was my family’s ways that brought our families together, was it not?” You stood up, and looked around the room, at the Ragnarssons, Torvi, the thralls and friends of the Lothbroks. “Now, if you’ll excuse me-”

You were interrupted by the sound of the hall’s doors bursting open, revealing two soldiers. “King Ivar,” the first said, “a body was found, hanging from a tree outside the town - it looked like one of the thralls.”

Bjorn stood up, “Hanged?”

“Yes, Prince Bjorn,” said the second, “but there was a symbol, the mark of a-”

“Red deer?” You asked, and the soldier nodded. You saw everyone in the room, once again, focussed on you. Hvitserk stood, and put his hand on your arm.

“Y/N,” he frowns, “What do you know?”

A red deer - the sigil of your family. A warning. This could mean only one thing - the truce made by your political marriage was over.

“Have you had any contact with my family, any plans against them?” you asked, and the Lothbroks all looked uncomfortable, shifty. They were sharing glances. They were terrible actors, you decided.

“We haven’t spoken to them, no.” Ivar said, but you could see, plainly, they were hiding something.

“Ivar,” you walked around the table to him, “Maybe not so much in your culture, but in mine, spies are sent to enemy camps all the time, so I’ll ask again, are you planning anything that might cause enmity between our families?”

“No.”

You sat on the edge of the bed, your head in your hands as Hvitserk busied himself with the fire in front of you. You had come up with a few reasons as to the warning, but none seemed to add up, each suggestion contradicted by the facts known to you. You sighed loudly, and watched Hvitserk poke the fire with a stick, causing sparks to fly out, the embers scattering around the floor. You looked at the man, and thought of your mother, and how she told you of her naive attempts to charm your father. You had come to Kattegat with a similar naivety, the difference being your wariness of the culture and Gods. My mother found herself in an unhappy marriage, you thought, but I’ll be damned if I do the same.

“Hvitserk?” you muttered, and he came and sat in front of you.

“Yes, my love?” he said, softly.

Hamnet’s World - A peak...

Year: 1596

You were a very religious person, secretly Catholic or pagan as the Church of England was a mix of Protestant / Puritan. Your secrets stayed with you or risk was torture and then death by burning at the cross. If you consented to becoming Protestant, your death would be swift and painless by beheading. ( A real bargain I know ... ) . The royal family did nothing to the common folk and really cared less about peasants as long as taxes were paid to support war.

Enemies: Anyone from Spain - Anyone Catholic - Anyone who was a witch or female for that matter - Anyone Scottish

In power: Queen Elizabeth l - World powers were Spain, France, Holland, Portugal, and Italy.

The heroes included Sir Frances Drake, as well as many other English pirates that raided Spanish ships for gold and goods.

Daily life: no running water or plumbing, zero sanitation efforts, most peasant could not read or write, only noble women and girls could read and write, books are very rare and cost a lot, printing is very limited as spies constantly look for anything treasonous or anti-Protestant in nature. Most homes are small, the largest room being the common room where everyone ate, talked, etc. Food was cooked over a fireplace and brick made ovens attached to fireplace. Bread was made each day. Stews being the common fare which contained some meat ( gamebird, beef, pork, mutton, or rabbit ) , vegetables ( parsnips, turnip, peas, lentils, garden greens like kale and chard, onions ) and maybe some type of grain ( millet, barley, farro ) depending on the family’s social class. Beer and wine were drank over any water; most water was very toxic with raw sewage and trash. If possible, every home had a garden. When not in a city, goods were bought from traveling merchants and faires. All clothing and even shoes were handmade, handknitted and handsewn. Fabrics were not cheap. Nothing was wasted - food scraps, fabric scraps, - all was used in one way or another. Country living was kinder, city living rough but better chances for success. Churches had large herb gardens and kept honeybees. Many clergy men were tutors for noble children. In most cases, only boys went to school. Both men and women had a large list of daily chores. Prayers were practiced by the entire family around meal times. Markets were a place to hear the latest gossip and news. You got to places by walking, riding on a wagon, horse or donkey back, and boat. So yes, travel to lots of time.

Marriage: Girls married as early as age 12, boys, age 17. Birth control methods were near none, sometimes healers had wild carrot seeds or teas for abortive measures, but these could prove deadly. A divorce was only attained from the Church of England. Women had few rights; rape was common but rarely punished, and abuse was widespread. Laws were not kind and very unjust at this time.

World scene: A New World! Yep, the Americas were the new sensation and so far, England had not put their hat in the race yet, but Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, were all charting this land and reaping the spoils. New foods were being chatted about at Royal courts - tomato, maize, chocolate, potato, beans, sunflowers, squash, cranberry, Wild Turkey, the pineapple, etc. New tribal groups with odd languages and dress - Native Americans and First Nations - some had been brought to court to be shown off. Question was how do we convert them to ‘The Right Way’ ? Also: The Islamic world is a growing power and it’s art and culture is becoming noticed. Many new territories are being conquered.

Health: yes, the medieval days are ending and life is pretty harsh and depressing. Life is very unfair too. Mental health is eh. The Black Death is baaacccckkk! Many are dying. Again. Epidemic to England: measles, smallpox (big one here ) , chicken pox, typhus, influenza, cowpox, and the common cold. Babies die often, as do toddlers. They are very fragile in a world that is full of deadly diseases and no medications but herbal remedies. Midwives deliver most babies, tooth problems and bone settings are taken care of by local butchers in most cases. Healers were common despite the danger of the Church and it’s witchhunts. They were much cheaper than a physician and could be paid in favor or goods if no coin was found. Only two items can be used for real pain management in surgery and severe wounds: alcohol and opium. Many patients died before surgery was over because the pain was too great. If they survived, wounds risked infection/sephis. Very few cared for their teeth. Very few bathed regularly. Only noble families had real soap. Peasants and common folk used flower essences and oils instead. Oh and hand washing: NEVER.

Fun: What would you do with free time? Hunting and fishing were popular, as were needlework and weaving. Children had their games and songs. Children were never looked over, most ran wild and younger ones were watched over by older siblings. Toys included fabric dolls, wood spinning tops, toy swords. Puppet shows and plays were common in the town square for both adults and children. Gambling, chess and cards popular with the men at taverns. Country towns had annual dances and festivals, many with pagan backgrounds. Playing music was a joy - the harp was very common.

Sorry, Noble people only stuff: gold spun thread, glass windows, rich dyed colored clothing, silk fabric, bookshelves with books, seal rings, endless supply of parchment - or paper - and Bibles with gold gilded pages, tasty spices - nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, saffron, and vanilla. Sugar was very costly, most used honey to sweeten dishes. Imported oils for skin and hair. Glass mirrors.

there are few things melanie derrieux remembers from her time as a human. she knows she was the only child of étienne and fleur derrieux and as such she was the sole focus of her parent’s affection. she knows she was born in paris france, and that she never left her birthplace except to visit the countryside every so often. she knows she was happy and intermingled with some names and faces are the vague recollections of little instances of a mortal life, of fleeting romances and rebellious charisma making the most of every day. however time was a funny thing, and for the immortal it became more of a blur as time continued on. she kept forgetting more and more of life as a human. replacing those faint memories were the vivid ones made as an angel. she doesn’t know why she was chosen, can't even begin to recall how she died and what exactly deemed her worthy enough to continue the afterlife as one of god's faithful servants but she was honored. originally trained as a healer, she spent her afterlife traveling the world and helping heal the warrior angels in all their battles.

it was as a healer that melanie first met the headstrong and formidable angel, sanem. never in all her years, would melanie think that a brief interaction where she helped heal the wounded angel would in turn result into one of the best things to ever happen to her. sanem became more than just a warrior angel mel would occasionally help, she became her confidant, her best friend, a missing key that opened her life to a plethora of happiness. after that, it was rare to see one without the other, each intrinsically linked to one another.

melanie didn’t think anything could get better until she found herself in a whirlwind of a romance. her soul finally meeting its match, her other half, her soulmate. she fell for another light angel and it wasn’t long till she promised her heart and herself to him, as he did to her. after all the courting and affectionate rituals they could share in, the completed the most sacred one. to unite under the eyes and grace of god, and publically share their loyalty only to one another. they were married and she wore his ring proudly, delighted to call herself a mrs. for so many years she was content, fulfilling her purpose as a healer, seeing her husband continue to thrive in his mission to rid the world of darkness and evil, as well as her best friend. she was so caught up in her bliss, she didn’t see the signs that something was wrong, and would brush off the concerning observations brought up by her dearest friend sanem. it was just inconceivable, the notion that the man she had trusted would ever betray her. not after all they've been through, not after all the promises.

however, it came to a point where things could no longer be brushed aside and in an ugly twist of fate, melanie felt her bond shatter, not only because of the single betrayal of him having found comfort in another being, which was already painful enough, but worse still was him having the nerve, the utter gall and disgrace to fall and leave her behind without confronting her about it. even if she hadn’t caught them with her own eyes, seen it play out as he sipped the blood his putain had offered him, she would have known of his falling. for her soul felt an indescribable pain, a separation, a splitting of one back to two. and worse still, she could feel an echo of his presence that was no longer there, a coldness seeping in where there was once only warmth.

it's only been a few years since that fateful day and her whole way of life has changed. she was lucky that she had sanem to help her pick up the pieces of the utter destruction done to her heart but even with her around, the walls that came up around melanie transformed her from a once sunny and vibrant personality into a cool distant one. she weathered the side glances and the gossipy whispers of those who knew the fate of her marriage, tried not to let the remarks and questions bring shame to her the way some intended. she wasn’t the one who broke the promise and she wasn’t the one who chose a cowards way out. yet it would be a lie if she didn’t admit that she often asks herself, in the quiet moments of pure isolation. just what exactly was so wrong with her, that a mere mortal was enough for her soulmate to drink the forbidden blood and fall. why was she not enough? why did she not even suspect that he was so unhappy with her?

she walks with her head held high, a cool gaze and with an expressionless face when in public, but in reality she feels so distraught. after her marriage and connection to her soulmate was destroyed, melanie found herself too distracted and in a fog of grief to continue as a healer. her superiors quickly realizing that until she was better, she would be no good to them or their armies. melanie took a step back from her healing duties.

always a creative soul and very good with her hands, melanie found a comfort in sewing. from then she began to teach herself how to work with different fabrics and then at the encouragement of her best friend, she started trying to create the outfits and designs she would originally just doodle. now melanie is opening her first boutique, where everything is custom made by her and her little team of seamstresses.

melanie has an immense love and respect for flowers and fauna, the fragile beauty always called out to her and she loved the process of planting the seed and seeing them bloom. its not rare to see mel picking flowers or having the motif around her, her clothing, her accessories and the like. she used to tend many gardens up above and now that she has settled on earth, she is in the process of making her own little magical garden.

melanie’s new boutique is named MAISON DE LA FLEUR FAE - an ode to her love of flowers, and her belief that were she to be any other creature, she knows she would be a fairy.

melanie is absolutely clueless about the fact that her best friend, sanem is not only deeply in love with her, but was the puppet master behind her husband being lured to the dark side all in an effort to have melanie to herself. to melanie, sanem is her rock, and she cannot see how manipulative the other angel can be.

ex husband: this character will be a wanted connection soon, is currently a happy fallen angel, might feel guilt over how shit went down but it will be utp if they have any lingering feelings for melanie or not. melanie does not know that she chose the city where her ex lives, lots of drama when they see each other again. even more drama should he reveal that sanem had a hand in everything that went down.

friends: sanem is her best friend and she feels a connection to adonis because his partner fell too. I would love to plot with any other light angels to think up how our bbs know each other!

anything else: even though melanie can be very flirtatious, the minute it can resemble anything real she retreats. so hookup culture isn’t her thing but it can be fun to play around with that, i would also love to explore all the snark and unfriendly interactions of vampires vs angels, and fallen angels vs angels. so lets have fun with our bbs not liking each other! as well as potential clients at her boutique!

Banu Davis was born to Noel Davis and Fatma Ozturk on August 28, 1973. Her parents met while Noel was working in Turkey and Fatma was assigned to monitor him.

They fell in love and got married in Turkey after Noel’s assignment was up and Fatma moved to England to be with him. Soon after moving him and his wife to London, Noel quit being a Curse-breaker and took up a job as a banker with Gringotts. When Fatma found out she was pregnant with her first child, Mona, she decided to be a stay at home mom. Noel was a good father and husband, he loved his wife and small daughter and he soon became a highly respected figure in the wizarding community due to his ascension to Senior Banking Administrator for Gringotts. Fatma was beloved by her neighbors and friends and was very adept at healing and household spells.

When Banu began coming to her and asking “hypothetical” questions about becoming an Animagi, she panicked at first but when she remembered her experiences with the Mauraders, made sure to provide her with the appropriate books and ingredients and also encouraged her to register with Ministry and kept Banu’s secret when she didn’t. Was definitely invited to Banu and Barnaby’s wedding and no she definitely wasn’t crying happy tears. 10/10)

Least Favorite Professors: Rakepick (Banu didn’t really trust Rakepick from the get go and kept her at an arms length while she was teaching DADA and trying to glean information about the Cursed Vaults. When Rakepick’s true nature was revealed in the portrait vault Banu was shocked at the level of cruelty that Rakepick demonstrated towards her and friends but wasn’t surprised that she was part of R. 2/10)

Trelawny (While Banu loves the actual subject and does exceptionally in it, she is really annoyed by Trelawny. Banu is always the subject of her doom and gloom prophecies and thinks that Trelawny is a right old fraud. 4/10)

When Jacob disappears while searching for the Vaults, Mona strongly advised Banu not to get involved as well. Banu obviously didn’t listen so Mona made sure to send her little sister letters containing news from the outside world and periodically sweets from Honeydukes. She was the maid of honor in Banu and Barnaby’s wedding and Mona fought in the Battle of Hogwarts with her family and helped Madam Pomfrey to heal the wounded.

Jacob fought in the Battle of Hogwarts with his family, taking out a few Death Eaters.

Noel fought with his family during the Battle of Hogwarts but sadly was killed by Dolohov while dueling.

Headcanons

- Fatma had wanted Banu to go to Durmstrang but Noel insisted that she follow her siblings to Hogwarts so she wouldn’t feel lonely.

-Banu met Rowan Khanna in Diagon Alley and they immediately hit it off, which helped both of them to settle into Hogwarts easier since they had each had someone they already knew with them.

-Banu was super excited to go to Hogwarts and see her sister and was hoping to be in Slytherin. She was a bit disappointed to be sorted into Ravenclaw but was happy about it after Rowan joined her at the table.

-Banu could hardly bear wearing the standard skirt uniform so in her third year she started wearing a bowtie and jeans, making the bowtie out of her school tie. Snape gave her detentions for the first couple of months and then gave up after he realized that Banu wasn’t going to stop.

-She had a small crush on Penny during her first year and when they became friends the crush dissipated into a deep friendship. Penny regularly helped Banu with Potions and was secretly the only reason that Banu got an ‘E’ in Potions.

-Banu proved to be very good at flying even though her first time on a broom was in her first year. Rowan and Penny convinced her to try out for Quidditch and Banu asked Andre Egwu to help her achieve that. She was pleasantly surprised to learn that she had made the House team. The Davis sisters developed a healthy rivalry on the Quidditch field and Banu enjoyed kicking Mona’s butt.

-Banu picked up on most subjects easily, like History of Magic and Charms but couldn’t quite get the hang of Potions and Herbology. In her third year she signed up for Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, and Ancient Runes. Rowan made Ancient Runes enjoyable but they got detentions in their fifth year for using runes to insult a group of Gryffindors.

-Banu formally met Talbott Winger in her second year and immediately tries to become his friend because, well, friendship! She liked how sarcastic Talbott was and matched him wit for wit which made her crush on him grow. When Talbott started dating Badeea at the end of second year she finally gave up on her crush on him, but that doesn’t mean she liked it :(

-Banu had to beg Talbott for three months straight to help her become an Animagus. It took buying a limited edition raven feather quill and a box of Jelly Slugs to convince him.

-Banu’s Animagus form turned out to be a fox and Banu took advantage of having a woodland creature as her Animagus form to spy on conversations in the Courtyard and take trips into the Forbidden Forest.

-Banu was instantly smitten by Barnaby cause hello, emerald green eyes and dimples. She helped him realize that he doesn’t need ‘friends’ like Merula and Ismelda and that he wasn’t stupid. Barnaby gave her a Bowtruckle, that she named Twiggy, and Banu almost fainted when he gave her a kiss on the cheek during their first date on Valentine’s Day.

-Banu drove Chester crazy since she lost points frequently in Snape’s classes due to her smart mouth. She equally drove him crazy by the fact that she more than double earned them back in her other classes. Don’t even get him started on the time he caught her, Rowan, and Penny making Firewhiskey in the Artifact Room. Banu gave Chester a plaque that read “Best Prefect Ever” in their House colors when he graduated and he may or may not have it displayed proudly on his mantle in his flat.

-Banu frequently visited the Library with Rowan and their study sessions usually ended in a few rounds of Exploding Snap, singed eyebrows and eyelashes, and Madam Pince sending flying books to chase them out.

-Bill Weasley often had to physically restrain Banu from launching herself head first into physical fights with douchebag Gryffindors that insulted her family and Rowan. Mysteriously those same Gryffindors showed up in the hospital wing frequently, Obliviated and with broken bones. Bill knew absolutely nothing about this because of course he would report it.

-Banu frequently teamed up with Tulip and Tonks to play pranks on the student body and was a nuisance so imagine her surprise when she was chosen as a prefect over Rowan. The best friends didn’t speak for about two weeks since Rowan was pretty upset. Banu took a special trip to Diagon Alley to get a limited edition book from Flourish and Blotts as a make up gift. The girls patched things up and Banu gives Rowan House points whenever she can.

-Banu enjoyed patrolling the halls with Charlie Weasely and scaring students who are out after hours. They once caught Penny snogging a Gryffindor in the bushes around the Courtyyard and the two prefects had a good time being all ‘mom and dad’ about the situation.

-Barnaby and Banu had most of their dates in Hogsmeade that usually started with going to Honeydukes, hanging out with their friends in the Three Broomsticks, and ended with a snogging session in the Astronomy Tower.

Every Book I Read in 2018

Again, better late than never??

01 On the Town; Marshall Berman - A freewheeling personal and general history of Times Square, which had some great historical tidbits I’d never read before. I think I would have got more out of it if I were interested in Broadway musicals...

02 Stephen Florida; Gabe Habash - A slim little book that follows a college wrestler. One of those books that is described as muscular, when what they mean is brutal.

03 Green Grass, Running Water; Thomas King - Four plot lines intertwine in a story blending mythology, creation, and modern First Nations people dealing with massive transformational change to their lands. I did sometimes feel like I would have enjoyed it more as an audio storytelling experience.

04 People who Eat Darkness: The Fate of Lucie Blackman; Richard Lloyd Parry - I don’t often read books like this, but this is essentially a true-crime sort of story, about the murder of a British woman who works as a bar hostess in Japan. Parry covers not just her story, but the whole aftermath, which even pulls in Tony Blair, eventually.

05 My Brother’s Husband; Gengoroh Tagame - Weirdly, two Japan-related books in a row! Another culture-clash tale, when the Canadian husband visits his deceased husband Ryoji’s single-parent brother. The couple had never been to Japan while Ryoji was alive, and so the story of slow acceptance (helped along by little Kana’s openhearted curiosity) is suffused with sadness.

06 Ghosts of the Tsunami: Life & Death in Japan’s Disaster Zone; Richard Lloyd Parry - And, let’s make it three! When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in 2011, I remember thinking that the reaction seemed so orderly, so...Japanese. But this examination puts you right in the various affected communities, following different people, including schoolchildren from Okawa primary. Like with the other Parry book above, we hear about all of the grief, ghosts and lawsuits that follow the disaster.

07 Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History; Rhonda K. Garelick - Once she became famous, Coco Chanel built a scaffolding of lies about her past, and the purpose of this biography is to attempt to see the truth behind them. Garelick concentrates heavily on Chanel’s collaboration with the Nazis, which must have been a challenge given that her company still exists, under her name.

08 Kubrick; Michael Herr - “They speak about the dumbing of America as a foregone thing, already completed, but, duh, it’s a process, and we haven’t seen anything yet. The contemplation of this culture isn’t for sissies, and speaking about it without becoming shrill is increasingly difficult, maybe impossible.” Whoa!

09 Call Me by Your Name; Andre Aciman - I did read this after seeing the film, so as usual it was hard to divorce it from the movie experience.

10 The Left Hand of Darkness; Ursula K LeGuin - A thought experiment about a genderless world, seen from the perspective of an off-planet envoy, who has a range of reactions to the world’s inhabitants. The most enduring section of the book involves a brutal 3-month expedition undertaken by the exiled envoy and a local, a trial by ice, wind and snow. A winter read.

11 Stamped from the Beginning; Ibram X. Kendi - I don’t think I’d really fully grokked the idea that southern white supremacy built itself in order to prevent an uprising of the black and white underclasses, together. The basic rubric of this book is separating American movements, parties and individuals’ thinking into one of three categories: assimilationist, segregationist or genuinely antiracist. Supporting results like abolitionism does NOT make one antiracist, since support could come those with less pure motivations. I highly recommend this one, though it was copy-edited in a pretty haphazard manner!

12 Witches, Midwives and Nurses: A History of Women Healers; Barbara Ehrenreich & Dierdre English - A short book charting a couple of parallel stories, of women healers in Europe being dismissed as witches, and the masculinization of medicine (particularly midwifery and the medicine of birth) in the USA.

13 Her Body and Other Parties; Carmen Maria Machado - Short stories skirting the edge of a lot of genres; horror, science fiction, dark comedy. These are women’s stories, that refuse to be dismissed as chick lit. It didn’t connect with me as deeply as it has for some, but I see the appeal.

14 Look Alive Out There; Sloane Crosley - Largely comedic set of essays by a writer whose earlier work I read, about a decade back. It’s a strange experience, to return to someone who has written memoir that seemed to exemplify that late-2000s era and discover that she - and you - have grown.

15 Homesick for Another World; Otessa Moshfegh - Moshfegh’s choice of words (not to mention her characters themselves) remain utterly revolting. I often found myself looking up, shaking my head as if to say THIS BOOK. Considerably funnier than Eileen, which was the first of hers that I read.

16 My Year of Rest & Relaxation; Otessa Moshfegh - After reading this, I found out that Moshfegh basically set out to get her work noticed by populating it with these vile young women. Well, it worked! Your tolerance for unlikeable main characters will be tested by this rich Columbia grad who decides to prescribe herself into a virtual coma within her NY apartment, at the turn of the millennium. And yes, it ends where you think it does.

17 They Can’t Kill us Until They Kill Us; Hanif Abdurraquabi - This collection of music-related writing is wildly far-ranging, poetic and emotional. For myself, I did find I was more interested in those that were related to bands or musicians I had some experience with myself , which was not always the case.

18 The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully; Aaron Carroll and Nina Teicholtz - If you’re a reader of the food media, most of what’s in here will be familiar to you, debunking fears of meat, GMOs, gluten, MSG. The authors keep their own experience, taste and interests very much in the forefront, which ends up feeling smug and irritating.

19 The Mere Wife: A Novel; Maria Dahvana Headley - My knowledge of Beowulf is scant at best, but this retelling stood very much on its own two feet, set in a tony suburb and comparing the experience of two very different mothers of two very different sons.

20 How to Write an Autobiographical Novel: Essays; Alexander Chee - I’m very much On The Record as being against writers writing about writing, but this might just be an exception.

21 Vancouver Special; Charles Demers - A sort of update on Douglas Coupland’s City of Glass, a book I loved and reread many times. This one has both a more historical bent, and an actual political viewpoint, contrasting with Coupland’s Gen X remoteness.

22 Crudo; Olivia Laing - A rushing frantic little novel, incorporating Trump tweets and Kathy Acker quotes throughout. A difficult read so close to the events described, but I can see this being an amazing window into this weird time, once a few years have passed.

23 Hits & Misses; Simon Rich - This might also be on the line of “writers writing about writing” but Rich manages to do so in a charmingly self-deprecating way.

24 2020 Commission Report on the North Korean Nuclear Attacks Against the US; Jeffrey Lewis - Speculative fiction written as a government report, responding, as we all have been doing, to the endlessly unprecedented Trump presidency. It all started with a tweet, of course...

25 A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster; Rebecca Solnit - This book is intended to counter the idea that disasters (“natural” and otherwise) lead people to indulge their worst sides. Solnit looks at the aftermath of some 20th C disasters like the Halifax Explosion, 9/11 and various earthquakes to find examples of people banding together to help the wounded and homeless, even taking the opportunity to create new institutions when authorities fail to do so. A tonic for a world in which disasters are likely to become increasingly common.

26 How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them; Jason Stanley - When I lived in Scotland in 2010, I went to an anti-fascist rally in Edinburgh, and I remember feeling like those attitudes were closer to the surface over there, where at home in Canada they felt abstract. This book traces how fascist policies lurk within democratic frameworks, and can sometimes metastasize to take over the host. Suffice it to say I was probably wrong then, and I’m definitely wrong now.

The History and Meaning of Celtic Design & Art

Celtic art and culture date back as far as the 8th century B.C. Until recently, much was unknown about this fascinating culture. But thanks to recent archaeological excavation and findings, a greater understand of the Celtic people has been developed. Tribes were bound together by speech, customs, and religion, rather than a centralized government. Because of this, the art of the culture contained specific designs for spiritual meaning.

Celtic Knotwork is probably the best known style of Celtic design. The intertwined patterns of never-ending lines appealed to the Celts, symbolizing their ideas of eternal life and the intricate relationship of humanity with both the divine and the natural worlds.

Celtic denotes a people who are descended from one of the current seven Celtic "fringe" provinces of W. Europe- Brittany, Cornwall, Galicia, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales. The Celts did not live as a single organized nation, and are difficult to pin down to one specific way of life.

The Celts lived in the centuries around the birth of Christ . The oldest remnants of Celtic culture can be found close to Eastern France, N. Italy, S. Germany, Belgium, N. Switzerland, Austria, Turkey and Spain. The word CELT itself was derived from the name Keltoi, given by the ancient Greeks to all those who lived north of the Alps.

The Celts were not a people for writing things down. They passed down their traditions and their history by word of mouth and later in their artwork and symbolism. Celtic symbolism explains how they felt about the universe, life, death and the result of the changing seasons, so important to people who lived off the land. Celtic Symbolism reflects the human spirit, the ambitions and desires, aspirations and fears, and beliefs of the "otherworld" of fellow humans two thousand years ago.

Celtic Crosses

Symbolize the bridge to the "other world" or "worlds" and also to higher energy and knowledge. This is shown by the vertical axis which represents the celestial world, and the horizontal axis that symbolizes Earthly world. Celtic Crosses are also considered solar symbols and the source of light and ultimate energy. The first Celtic crosses had four equal points representing the four directions (north, south, east and west), and the four elements (earth. air, fire and water) and were enclosed by a circle that represented the sun. It may be noted that these early crosses were also used to mark holy spots in pre-Christian times and are often associated with the Tree of Life.

The Spiral

Symbolizes the continuity of life and spiritual growth. It is the constant flow of nature's processes moving outward then back inward as Heaven and Earth are joined. It is also about how death is a rebirth, whether of a human life, the seasons of the year, the astrological skies or anything in the natural or supernatural world The spiral was found on many Dolmans and gravesites. Its true meaning is not known for sure, but many of these symbols were found as far as Ireland and France. It is believed to represent the travel from the inner life to the outer soul or higher spirit forms; the concept of growth, expansion, and cosmic energy, depending on the culture in which it is used.

To the ancient inhabitants of Ireland, the spiral was used to represent their sun.The spiral is the cosmic symbol for the natural form of growth; a symbol of eternal life, reminding us of the flow and movement of the cosmos. The whorls are continuous creation and dissolution of the world; the passages between the spirals symbolized the divisions between life, death, and rebirth. Another idea states that the loosely wound anti-clockwise spiral represent the large summer sun and the tightly wound, clockwise spiral their shrinking winter sun. Also a double spiral is used to represent the equinoxes, when day and night are of equal length.

The Cauldron Symbol or the Three Spirals

Represent the Maiden, Mother and Crone aspect of the Goddess. The Cauldron is under the power of the Earth goddess Ceredwen the goddess of transformation. Transformation or Shapeshifting was an integral part of Celtic belief, this symbol is found all over Celtic artifacts. In the Cauldron, divine knowledge and inspiration are brewed.

Celtic Triangle Knot or Triquetra Knot

Triquetra - this three-pronged knot may symbolize the Celtic philosophy that everything has 3 distinct yet interlocked levels - physical, mental and spiritual. When the Celts embraced Christainity they used this symbol to represent the Trinity. Inspired by the 9th century illuminated Gospels of Lindisfarne, each triquetra (triangle) is constructed of one line to represented strength and give protection to the wearer.

Triple Spiral

This structure is called the spiral of life and was found in the remnants of an old temple from the Bronze Age in Ireland.An ancient symbol found at the core of Celtic belief , the triple spiral was used consistently in Celtic art for 3000 years. The Celts believed that all life moved in eternal cycles, regenerating at each point. Celts also believed that all important things came in three phases such as birth, death and rebirth and also mind, body and spirit. The triple spiral later became the Triskele used in Christian manuscripts. The triple spiral is also used to represent the triple goddess and triple god. My personal favorite symbol of the feminine cycle of life- Maiden, Mother, Crone.

Serpent and Dragons

The dragon represents change, the necessity that we not only adapt to circumstance but we ourselves become the active agent of change.Ancient Celts believed the fiery breath of the Green Dragon would give new life Dragons are the combination of the forces of the depths. The serpent, the wings of a bird, and horns, represent regeneration and grown. The dragon is the gatekeeper to other worlds.

The "Tree of Life"

This is an ancient philosophy common to many cultures and mythologies. Often regarded as an all-nourishing, all giving Mother, many myths speak of the Tree of Life or World Tree as involved in the creation of the universe. Britain was once covered by mightly oak forests, and tree reverence is a major feature within Celtic religion. Trees reflect a link between the upper and lower worlds. The Ancients envisioned the entire cosmos in the form of a tree whose roots grow deep into the underground, its branches reaching high into the heavens and sky. Druids had their teaching centers in the midst of Oak groves, and the words for wood and wisdom are similar (Welsh gwydd and gwyddon).

The Celtic Tree of Life is one of the most popular and enduring motifs of Celtic Art, found both on Northumbrian and Celtic crosses and on illuminated manuscripts. Portrayed variously as the Golden Bough, vine, or mistletoe.

The ancient Celts envisioned the cosmos in form of a great tree. The roots were deep in the earth and branches stretched to the heavens. The Celtic Tree of Life is the symbol of balance between these worlds; the unification of above and below; a symbol of Balance and Harmony. It's branches and roots form a map of the cosmos wherein all things are interwoven and connected. Many Celtic Tree of Life designs emerge from a pot. This pot symbolizes the Earth Mother from which all life springs.

Birds of Rhiannon

The Welsh Goddess Rhiannon was accompanied by magical birds whose enchanted songs could awaken the dead and lull the living to sleep.

The Horse - Sovereignty, Guidance

The horse was reverred by the Celts for its speed and sexual vigour. Epona and Macha are Celtic horse goddesses who watch over the land, protecting its abundance and insuring a good harvest. As protectors of nature, they both grant sovereignty over the land and are the goddesses of the stable. As goddesses of maternity, prophecy, and prosperity, they guide and protect mortals on their journeys through life.

Serpent - Earth Healer

Symbols of healing and wisdom, serpents live within the depths of the Earth Mother and have mastery of all her secret knowledge and vital forces. Both Brigantia and Stroni, Celtic goddesses of healing, use the serpent's mystical powers to work their cures. Because of their wave-like movements, serpents are also assoc-iated with healing waters and sacred wells, sources of the regenerative healing powers from within the earth, and thus are protectors of health and well-being. Coming from inside the Earth, the serpent was believed to be all knowing of the world's secrets and having divine wisdom. The ram-headed serpent is named Cerrunos, who is lord of the underworld, and king of all animals. Cerrunos is the symbol of strength and virility.

Birds - Spirits of Prophecy

Birds play a prominent role in Celtic myth and legend. As symbols of freedom and transcedence, they represent the human soul in flight, liberated from earthly ties, able to soar in spiritual communication with the heavens. Returning to earth, they bring messages of prophecy and guidance, aiding mortals on their spiritual and earthly journeys.

Represnted divine power and strength. For the Druids it was a symbol for the sun and the procreativity associated with its forces.

Often seen with various gods & goddesses, the hounds may be a domestic guardian as well as a source of healing power.

I haven’t vented to the void on tumblr in a second…

When your ancestors before you endured violence and were forced into Catholicism the current news and topics can be triggering. I know there are thousands of bodies like mine buried carelessly beneath the earth. I have known almost all my life.

I feel the anger, depression, abuse, and pain from the generations before me. I will not pass down the cycles of abuse and anger. One day I will adopt or have a partner who is a parent and I want to give a child everything I should have received.

Healing is difficult. Especially healing patterns passed down to you. I feel as if I’m wrapping a wound which will never stop bleeding.

My grandfathers never spoke of the nations or tribes there are from but we believe one is of Chichimeca origin. I do not claim to be Native or indigenous because I was raised in an Americanized Latin culture. There are no traditions passed down to me but I believe my ancestors were healers.

I wish to live a life my ancestors would smile upon. I am doing the work to break generational curses. It would be easier to ignore and not change but if healing does not happen I will never find true happiness. I am worthy of love, joy, and peace. The pain of my ancestors will be healed and will stop with me. I’m taking a break from social media to reflect. I haven’t even really been social this summer since I started working again on healing trauma.

I pray my ancestors guide me in healing. I pray I become a person they would be proud of. I am the product of indigenous ancestors and Spaniard blood may run through my body but out of all the death came my life. That has to mean something. My ancestors survived and here I am alive, breathing, and determined.
