i’m watching the lotr movies for the first time; i‘m currently halfway through return of the king and the one big criticism i have (especially when it comes to two towers & return of the king) is that there are too. many. battle. scenes. i get it, all the guys & sword enthusiasts are probably like FUCK YES ANOTHER BATTLE but i literally do not care. give me more walking & talking please the fighting feels SO repetitive.

So today my student, who is working on learning to write fight scenes, turned in a fight scene that was extremely technically competent but had no character whatsoever. Four interchangeable heroes shooting bad guys. I asked him what fight scenes in media he had used for reference.
One of them was the Cap-Batroc fight from CATWS. Nine years after that movie came out, and I do not fault his taste.
But also I saw that movie either 17 or 18 times in theaters (I was going through it, okay?) and I was NOT gonna let this opportunity pass unremarked.
Me: Okay. So imagine you're the writer on this movie. Why do you put that fight scene in at that point?
Him: IDK. It's cool?
Me: It definitely is, but so was Black Widow's fight like two minutes before it. They've hit their cool-fight minimum. They're not setting up French Guy to come back later. So why burn the time?
Him: ... it's REALLY cool?
Me: OK. What's the coolest part?
Him: (essentially summarizes the "on va voir" moment)
Me: Good eye! That's a great moment for Steve's character. Do you remember the first thing you saw him doing in the first Cap movie, after trying to enlist?
Him: The fight in the alley!
Me: YEAH! And do you think that was his first alley fight?
Him: No, he told the girl all the other places he got beat up!
Me (dying inside): Yeah, he told AGENT CARTER all about that! And his friend BUCKY knew to look for him in the alley, not the theater, so you know it happened a lot.
Him: I didn't even notice that.
Me: Okay, so when French Guy trash-talks him, he's like, "I zought you were moar zan just a shield," and what does Steve do?
Him: He takes his helmet off?
Me: Yeah. Why is that?
Him: To make it fair?
Me: He's still got superpowers. But the movie is reminding you of something AND setting something up. When have you seen him fighting without a helmet before?
Him: The alley!
Me: Right! Steve is an angry little shit from Brooklyn who either likes fighting or at least doesn't mind it, and taking his helmet off makes it more like old times for him. And before that, he clips his shield on his back. He puts it away properly. Now, when do you see him fight without his shield and helmet LATER in the movie?
Him: ... the end. With Bucky.
Me: RIGHT!!! And there, he takes off his helmet, drops his shield out of an aircraft, and says, "I don't wanna fight you." And because you KNOW from that first scene that fighting is nostalgic and kinda fun for him, you know he's serious. It heightens the impact of the fight with Bucky. Bucky’s the one guy he DOESN'T wanna fight, but he HAS to. Was that fight kind of an emotional moment for you?
Him: ...yeah.
Me: No shame, dude, I heard grown men sobbing in the movie theater in 2014. But you see how setting up that "normal" fight makes the grand finale even bigger?
Him: Oh. OHHHHHH.
Me: Got an idea?
Him: Okay, so these characters were all best friends when they were kids, and now--
Sometimes I get things right.

CA:TWS Fight Analysis
Steve is heavily on the defensive for almost the entire highway fight, and his face is basically one massive study in "OH SNAP". However, the strikes he does land (you can count them on one hand, by the way) are highly effective.
Steve favours throws, joint locks, and open-hand strikes - in other words, disabling techniques. Not that you can't do massive damage with those, but his combat style is definitely geared towards subduing opponents, not killing them. He also includes some "fancy" moves like spinning kicks, and gets up from the ground almost more like a gymnast than a martial artist. All in all, this is clearly a man who's used to having the upper hand in a fight, and is reluctant to use more force than necessary.
Bucky, on the other hand, is all brutal, lethal efficiency. There are no frills here, no gymnastics, no spin-kicks. He's just trying to kill Steve as quickly as possible. The seemingly fancy moves with the knife are mostly to get it where he needs it, or once, to keep Steve's attention on the knife and off of the fist that's about to hit him in the face. None of Steve's strikes really even slow him down until his metal arm is damaged.
TL;DR: Steve fights like a martial artist. Bucky fights to kill.

Bucky and Sam watch as a guy tries to hit on you at the bar.
“Shouldn’t you do something?” Sam asks, curious as to why bucky hasn't moved.
“Nah, she’s got it” he croons, eyes trained on the unfolding situation.
And you do, in fact, have it. You can handle yourself, have gotten out of much tougher spots without the help of anyone and you enjoy that feeling. Now, you can protect yourself despite having no powers nor superhero training, but when you flash Bucky a look, he walks over without a second thought. The glass shoved into Sam's unexpecting hands, metal whirring and soft clinks as plates click against each other. He isn't going to use the prosthetic; there's no need to cause a bigger scene, but he might flash the metal to give the creep a bit of a scare. he claps the guy on the shoulder, enjoying the way he jumps.
"Alright, bud. Pack it up." But the guy shrugs him off, looks at the ex- assassin over his shoulder, and then turns back to you, leaning closer despite your very obvious rejection.
The muscles in Bucky's jaw clench as he leans forward, hand now wrapping around the back of the creep's neck. "You've got two seconds to get the fuck away from her, or I'll rip your throat out."
The guy turns, face contorted in rage and itching for a fight, but as he takes in the face of the Winter Soldier, he balks. There are no apologies thrown your way as he scrambles away, head ducked in order to disappear from his sight.
Bucky turns to you, a soft smile replacing the grimace he had not two seconds ago and leans in for a soft kiss.
"Bucky Barnes, my hero." you swoon and wrap your arms around his neck. "Where would I be without you?" he returns the gesture, holding you fast against his body.
"I don't ever wanna find out."
