✎ SUMMARY: would destiny ever find suki and Jungkook again? And would it ever work in their favour?

✎ WARNINGS: none really??? Idk I’ve been writing this all summer long lmao. Comment if I missed anything!!

Suki was gullible, that much she already knew. However, how can she refuse the sweet doe eyes trapped in the bad-boy life style? His dark chocolate eyes and choppy hair, white simple tee and blue washed out jeans. Hair as dark as the night sky. He was her first love, her one and only true love, of that, she was sure.

Though, a couple like them was destined for failure at this time. She came from a broken home, running away from her toxic parents in her pink Mitsubishi lancer, the fact she drove a stick shift is what interested Jungkook, but then he learned suki was foreign. And a good driver. She was at the fresh age of nineteen, and he was just a twenty year old man, running from cops and constantly coming home bruised and beaten.

They met outside an old rusty gas station, he had all sorts of different snacks in his hands, whistling to himself while looking down at the can of red bull in his hand. She was just trying to tank up her beloved lancer, sunglasses covering her eyes and a white tank top covering her upper body, neatly tucked into her mom denim shorts. They were wide at her thighs, yet so tight around her waist. She looked divine that day, her skin glowing in a coppery-gold shade.

They moved in together after dating for a couple months. Which lead them to be absolutely madly in love.

At the usual night return of Jungkook, suki helped clean his freshly busted lip. Their bathroom was rundown, barely any hot water and covered in mould. The lighting was a dull orange shade, casting a beautiful shadow over her hardened features. Though their home was old and run down, they made the best of it.

As he sat across her on top of the counter top she cautiously wiped his lip with a gauze warm water from the tap beside him, she leaned back against the tiled wall. Scoffing. The fact he sat so casually and yet exhausted in their shared bathroom, somehow irked her even more.

“Suki please, don’t -“

“For Christ’s sake Jungkook,” she slapped her crossed hands on her legs. She was still in her work uniform, she worked at the local diner, a white shirt, black leggings and red apron with her name tag “how much longer will this go on for huh?”

“Suki-“ he sighed, head dropping behind him and leaning against the mirror.

“How much longer will you be beaten? Your body is covered in cuts, scars and bruises. Is it worth it? Selling some coke and shit for a few pennies? Is it really worth it?” Her voice was exasperated, whiny at this stage, “Stealing shit and getting in trouble. Shit that costs a lot of money! Like that gold fucking watch! It costs more than this house, more than what you and I make in two years. You don’t get anything for it. You steal it, risk yourself and he takes all the money. This is some bullshit.” She scoffed.

“Baby,” he pulled her towards him by her hips, fingers moving her chin towards him, kissing her lips gently “soon, I promise. We’ll have everything. A huge house, good cars, and so much money.”

She shook her head, staring into his eyes solemnly, “not like this kook. Not like this.”

The sole reason they even had a roof over their head right now is because of Jungkook current “boss”. An old greasy man giving him a piece of crap house for free, just to get him whatever he desires while sitting in his mansion and Jungkook has to risk his freedom… life even. Not to mention the amount of money Kook owes this bastard. Another reason he has to do what he does. Sure, he tried getting a job, but his boss gave him a deadline, if he didn’t have a solid job within two weeks, he had to do what he does now. Which is why he’s forced to do it. No question about it. Either that, or Jungkook has to move to a whole different city. Which right now, neither of them could afford.

He rested his forehead against hers, taking a deep breath as he smelled her sweet perfume, “do you trust me?”

“Of course I do.” She whined, hands balling in his bloodied and dirtied white tee. His own hands cupping her face. Both of their eyes closed as he continued lingering his lips on hers.

“Then continue trusting me. Please.”

So she did, for another year she put up with it. She worked for her last dime. Having enough gathered up to move out of this shitty town and get a small apartment in a suburban area. Suki excitedly came home that day, hands shaking with how over worked she was, the skin on them already wrinkling from the bleach and chemicals she was washing everything in.

She noticed Jungkook when she hung her coat on the rack and walked to the kitchen, the smile on her face souring at the sight of a hunched over Jungkook, right above their sink.

“Kook?”

He said nothing, humming in response instead.

“You okay?”

He scoffed, tongue poking his cheek as he turned towards her. When he usually did that, it meant he was angry or disappointed. Or both.

“How long were you going to keep this from me?” He said, dropping the bank statement on the kitchen table.

“Kook,” she sighed, “I was about to tell you. I didn’t want to get your hopes up before i got the final cheque. We can finally move. We can get that apartment we said we’d love, I promise I was going to tell you. I just needed this”.

She smiled a little, moving the cheque towards him. $5000 written across it.

He was silent, though he smiled back at her quickly, “that’s great babe. That’s amazing.” Though his tone was a little flat, she decided to ignore it, blaming it on his small surprise at the banking statement.

“I’m gonna go wash up? Join me in bed hm?”

He mumbled a quick ‘course’ and pecked her lips back before she strutted up the creaking stairs. Taking the tie out of her bun and letting her natural curls out.

She felt him hug her that night, kiss her shoulder before she dozed off. Sleeping peacefully. The next morning, she woke up to an empty bed, though not unusual, she thought Jungkook would stay back a little so they could celebrate, but either way, she made her way downstairs. Yawning a little.

On the table, laid one single rose and a letter. Inside, it wrote a simple sorry, I’ll make it up to you. Instantly, she was worried, her first thought was calling jungkook, which sent her to his voicemail. Then. She saw the envelope of the cheque, empty. No sign of it. She checked everywhere she could, even though she knew she put the cheque back in the envelope the night before. In pure shock, she sat down, still in only her leggings and a hoodie she threw over her top half before heading downstairs. She chuckled to herself, unable to stop the worrying about Jungkook. Perhaps he needed it really badly?

Then her bank called, asking if she truly withdrew half of her savings. She confirmed a yes even though she didn’t. She knew then, he used the money to give back to whoever he needed to give it back to. Whether that was his boss or someone else. She also knew she couldn’t take it anymore. All that hard earned money, every cent went away to her savings so she could get him out of this town, out of this mess. But she needed to think of herself now too. Even if she felt guilty and selfish, she wiped her tears and began to do what she should have done much sooner.

She packed her bags quickly, writing a note for him too;

“I’m sorry too. Don’t bother making it up to me, just please help yourself. Get yourself out of this mess kook. I hope you understand I had to think of myself now too. Goodbye”.

With that. She left. Successfully renting a tiny one bedroom apartment. Small but doable.

A fresh start.

Suki sat in her chair. Her white skirt neat, not too short, right above her knees. Purple silky shirt exposing her collarbones and necklaces. And sparkly heels nicely tucked behind her chair. Her hair was in a half up half down style. Absolutely beautiful she was. She sat facing her boss as he proposed the business to Jungkook. The CEO of J.J & Co. Though she didn’t look at him, he couldn’t take his eyes of her. The way she seemed to glisten, her pulse point; right between her collarbones, ever the same. Giving away just how nerves she actually was.

The whole meeting flashed by in a mere minute. Jungkook mindlessly signing whatever contract with whatever business her boss pitched, following her like a lost puppy when she walked out the room. He wondered if she didn’t remember him. Or if she did, did she perhaps hate him for what happened back then?

This might break him, but regardless, he hurried into the elevator right behind her.

Suki stood idly, looking at the numbers on the elevator, going down from the 12th floor each second. He didn’t have much time. He had to think quick, and without another minute wasted, he pressed the red button. Stopping the elevator at a random floor. Her head whipped around to look at him, eyebrows furrowed and sweet eyes confused.

“Sir?” She asked in a soothing tone, though it was confused.

He licked his lips, clearing his throat a little, “hi suki”.

He could almost see the whirring of her thoughts in her pretty little head. Hair dark black, eyes almost glowing bright green, and skin so beautifully caramel. She was gorgeous. As always. Her skin glowed with gold flecks under the poor lighting in the elevator, her skin was like a blend of chocolate and caramel. Absolutely perfect she was.

For a second, she forgot how to breathe. Her button like nose flaring a little when she took a deep breath. Her naturally curly hair framing her face elegantly. Stunning, stunning, stunning. She was breathtaking.

“Jungkook…” she closed her eyes for a second. Licking her already glistening lips. If he hadn’t known her, he’d thought her lips were all makeup. But he knows the dark chocolate like outline of them was natural, and so was the lighter shade in the middle, thus creating a perfect ombré effect.

“Do you have a minute to talk?”

She in fact did. After this meeting she was meant to drive home and do absolutely nothing. She could easily take his offer on whatever he wanted to talk about, but in being in the depth of Seattle, was too risky. It was a city she was in love with, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to fall back in love with another thing. Another someone.

She struggled to make her mind up. Her manicured finger coming up to play with her glossy lips, swallowing thickly as she comedically glanced up at him, though it was very quick and if jungkooks focus wasn’t all on her, he’d miss it. But it proved to make him amused as he watched the gears in her head work.

“Just a quick chat over dinner? Nothing much. A celebration for being business partners say?” He suggested.

‘This is gonna break me’ she thought to herself. But sighing, her hand landed to her small leather-like purple handbag. Curling her delicate fingers around the handle before her sweet eyes met his again.

“Okay.” She agreed.

They decided to take Jungkook’s car as he’d have to return to the company afterwards. His white Mercedes shone under the bright sunlight, and as they sat inside and buckled up, Jungkook could see her nibbling on her bottom lip out of his side view. He smiled to himself. Some things never change huh?

The drive wasn’t too long, arriving at the small hut cafe, Jungkook held the door open for her as they entered the homily restaurant. They were seated immediately, the server seemed to know Jungkook as she engrossed in a small conversation with him. Smiling at Suki as her eyes lit up. She was an elder woman, not too old but definitely about sixty something.

As they looked over the menus, Jungkook was the faster person. As always. It reminded him how she always reads the menu carefully, making sure she doesn’t pick something that she doesn’t like because she’s far too shy to speak up and would instead eat it all instead of asking for something else.

Food ordered, they sat in awkward silence for a second. Her green eyes almost cat like, sharp and slender yet very tender and doe. She smiled lightly at him, sipping her lemon water, “I love the Merc, when did you get it?”.

Another thing he loved about suki. She always knew how to carry a conversation, never afraid to start one up or ask questions, “uh I got it around six months ago or so.”

“It’s beautiful. Why white though? I remember you said black cars are top tier” she chuckled, crossing her legs over.

He smiled, he’d never admit that every car he owns is either in white or a red satin wrap, all because she’d always say how beautiful those specific colours are, “just needed a change. You can drive her back if you want?”.

The waitress served their food, her eyes closing as she smelled the delicious food in front of her, laying a napkin on her laps, “oh you are so gonna regret offering that.”

The conversation flowed over dinner, somehow an hour turned into two and two turned into three. Both of them laughing and reminiscing their teenage days.

“I did mean to give back every penny I took from you suki. I mean it. When you left, I couldn’t figure myself out. I believed you’d be back, that any day you’d come back to the house and after a year I finally was able to work on myself. I went to college, got my degrees and suddenly I found out my father appointed me as the ceo after his death. I was scared. And at that moment, the only thing that kept me sane was thinking of you.”

Suki smiled softly at him, her eyes mimicking her smile, “I know kook, it’s history now. Don’t worry about it.”

Dinner went well, and by the time suki could even think about it, their time was at an end as she pulled into the spot beside her own car. Suddenly her chest felt heavy. She realised just how much Jungkook has grown as a person, he’s no longer that troubled young boy. He’s grown to be a mature man, responsible and caring. His heart was always at the right place, his mind was a little behind, but it seems as though he’s paced it to its right timing. He finally caught up.

It was a sunny day when Jungkook unexpectedly came to her work place. All eyes on him as he walked confidently towards Suki’s office. He looked amazing as he tapped gently on her door before entering her room. A white button up, undone at his chest and sleeves rolled up, hands In the pockets of his black dress pants. Tattooed arm perfectly contrasting him.

He walked towards her desk, his lips pulling into a soft smirk, “you look great.”

She wasn’t dressed amazingly, a simple white pencil skirt hugging her curves perfectly, along side a lacy cami top and a light and airy blouse. Gold watch on her wrist and pearl earrings framing her face. It was a basic but comfortable outfit. Still he thought she looked perfect.

“As do you,” she smiled “to what do I owe the pleasure?”.

He chuckled softly as he sat down on the chair in-front of her desk, legs crossed and hands intertwined right below his lower stomach, “care to go with me to a charity event slash party?”.

She was surprised, sure of herself that he moved on to someone else, which begged her question, “what about your girlfriend?”.

He looked off in the distance with squinted eyes and a tilt of his head, exhaling a deep breath through his nose as if in deep thought, “I have a girlfriend?”.

She rolled her eyes in amusement, “I’m sure you have someone better to take to an important event than me.”

“And who says you aren’t the expectation?”

Suki sighed, slumping in her chair as her left hand rested on her stomach, “i am not the standard, kook. I am just an overworked employee, I’m not a business woman or someone of high title.”

He tiled his head to the side like a lost puppy, “you are to me.”

This flustered suki. Her cheeks burning with a light shade of pink as he leaned across her desk, his eyes turning serious and dark as they floundered over her face.

“I would only be the most confident man if I have you along my side.”

That is what ultimately made her accept his offer. That soul reason is why she is panicking over an outfit, throwing everything out of her closet to find something of any sorts of acceptable. She owned nothing of higher standard; all either basic or too skimpy.

Her panic was cut short when a knock resounded in her apartment, her brows furrowing in confusion as she walked to her entrance door. There stood her coworker and best friend, with a box from Norma Kamali. And a smaller one from Christian Louboutin. The frown on her face deepened.

“You’re confused?” Her coworker whined childishly, “I’m confused”.

“Oh get over yourself Jimin!”

“Bro this is like 2K in a box!”

She rolled her eyes, “why are here with this?”

His brows pulled into a frown, “Jungkook sent me here with this.”

She gasped an ‘oh my god’ before pulling Jimin into her apartment by by his tie. She set the boxes on her circular table, staring at them as if they’d explode, “you have got to be kidding me!”

“Well im no-“

Before Jimin could finish his sentence , Suki was already calling Jungkook as his eyes widened. He mimed to her to cut the call of desperately as she ignored him.

“Jungkook, I can’t accept this. I’m send it back with Jimin.”

His voice came through the other side of the phone, “it’s not returnable Suki, I can’t wait to see you tonight.”

“He hung up on me! The asshole hung up on me!”

“This man sends you like basically thousands in a box and you call him an asshole? You’re truly one of a kind Ki”.

“I just don’t get why he’d do that! What an idiot honestly.”

After ushering her to put the dress and heels on, Jimin waited patiently, picking at the different variations of fruits in her wooden basket. Suki’s apartment was cozy. Warm vanilla like painted walls, her living room was separated by just one kitchen island that connected her countertops. The paint in the kitchen was a brighter shade, almost lemon like. Everything went under the aesthetics, a strawberry littered clock, manual one. Her fridge magnets were either lemons limes or strawberries. The cabinets a glassy white, counters marble. It was a beautiful place, one where Jimin always felt cozy, warm and at home. Especially her white soft couch with way too many pillows.

Her baskets on the counter were always filled with fresh fruit; grapes, apples, bananas, strawberries, kiwis etc. there was a cute heart shaped bowl, which contained his favourite treats. Toffee covered nuts, chocolate bars, hersheys and all unhealthy teeth rotten goodness. Suki was an amazing cook too! Her food always tasted glorious, either sweet/spicy or simply heaven like. She always baked when she could, and she could bake about anything. Breads, cakes, muffins, you name it, suki would probably do it in a heartbeat.

But despite being an amazing person externally, Suki was also probably the most endearing soul ever. Her heart could never take another souls suffering, always there to comfort. Even if she didn’t have the right words to say, she’d always let someone.. anyone, take her shoulder to cry on. Despite it all, people hurt her anyway, like her previous boyfriend. It didn’t last long, but he hurt her feelings so quickly. Sleeping with her best friend of many years. That day, Jimin spent all day and night with her. Jimin knows her like the back of his hand, he can almost always predict when she’s about to get her period, or when she’s about to get her random energy excretes.

Jimin also knows how much she cares about pretty much everything. The plants on her window sill always hydrated adequately. He remembers the time she found a bunny in the mouth of a neighbours dog, cutting Jimin short of his rant and helping the creature immediately. Unlike many, she wasn’t scared or perhaps even slightly disgusted. No. Instead she was tremendously worried. She took the bunny home, cleaned it’s wounds and got advice from a vet. After a short while, when ‘berry’ was better and healed, she released the bunny back to the wild. Or the time she noticed a bumble bee having trouble flying because it’s wings got wet by swimming into her cup. She’d sat the bee on her leg and let it dry until it flew away by itself, Jimin kept staring at her, afraid that one wrong move and she’d get stung… alas she didn’t.

When she came out of the room, his world stopped. She looked absolutely stunning. From her makeup, to her hair to her outfit. She pulled everything off so easily. Her dress was form fitting, satin and hugging every perfect crevice of her body. The red was vibrant under her darker caramel skin tone and the gold necklace and shoes enhancing the pink undertones in her skin. She was fabulous.

“The shoes are jimmy choo’s… and the dress is Norma kamali I believe.”

Jimin’s plumb lips separated, “well you look gorgeous.”

“I feel like amazing in this.. the quality is superb chim!”

She sounded excited, and she deserved to be so. Everyone around her knew how beautiful she was, how gentle and caring she is. She deserved every good there was, Jimin firmly believed so. No matter what.

On the way to the event, suki felt more than nervous. Her skin though gleaming and glittery, was sweating buckets. Her hands slightly shaky and heart beating about a hundred miles per second. It wasn’t because it was probably the most handsome man ever attending with her, but he’s just not the same one as she used to know and love. Not that he’s changed for the worse, on the contrary, he’s done everything she only hoped he would have. Kook, kept his promise.

Jungkook never was a bad guy. He’s always had the best at heart. He was just a lost boy, a boy who was caught up in a messy life style not by his own choices. He’s had a rough life, a rough start, perhaps that is why they were madly and deeply in love. Maybe it was the way it was written in the stars for both of them. They fit like a puzzle, like corner to corner, Solid.

Standing outside the event now, with her dress barely doing anything to keep her warm, she looked around. Dancing eyes trying to find the handsome man in question. Her heart began to sank the more she looked around and couldn’t find him. Her stomach twisting and knotting in an almost painful ache. It was the warm touch of someone’s palm on the small of her back that made her jump a little, effectively distracting her.

He stood beside her, in all his beautiful glory. He was dressed far too fine, albeit he always looked too good. He dressed in black pants and a navy button up, and in true Jungkook style, the first few buttons left open, giving her a glimpse of his chest. His sleeves were rolled up and the gold watch he’s worn before caught her attention. He smelled amazing too, a spicy woody fragrance paired with cotton and coconut undertones.

“You know,” his arm snaked around her waist, beginning to stroll casually towards the entrance, “you’re putting every woman and man in there to shame? That’s quiet mean Suki.”

She chortled, the chuckle always pleasing to the man as he looked down at her with a wide grin, she didn’t quite catch his expression as instead, she was looking down at her feet, “you’re being too nice.”

Her body was pressed to his side, his warmth welcoming. He looked up to the dark sky, his free hand coming up to rest on his lips in deep faux thought, “no, I’m just honest.”

She scoffed amusingly, manicured fingers picking at her clutch bag, “thank you for the dress, it’s beautiful.”

“I have never invested in something so successful.”

She wasn’t sure what that meant, but she ignored it. Smiling to herself a little. The night was beautiful, and she loved every second she was with him. He was still so bright, maybe even brighter. He was the happiest she’s ever seen him, truly the best version of himself and that, that fulfilled her.

It was bound to come up, she knew that. Her overthinking last night has prepared her for this moment, yet still her heart broke somehow even more than yesterday, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you’d leave. I shouldn’t have expected that of you anyway, you had every right to leave, but it was a wake up call for me too. So now, I’m in a position I can give you back the money I took from you.”

She could see the pain behind his eyes as he sat on the chair across her, swirling his wine in his glass. She cleared her throat, her fingers picking at each other in her lap, her voice soft as she began, “it was never about the money, and it will never be. I left because I couldn’t watch someone I loved so much ruin themselves, but, I also had to prioritise myself. I had to get out of there and help myself. During those times, I tried to help you so much it eventually began killing me too, everything I did, every job I worked, every plan I made, it was all for us. Because I wanted us. I wanted my future with you. But I never had that influence on you, to actually help you the way I thought I was. I think, instead I was making it worse for you, because just like me, everything you did, was for us. For me. In the end, all our efforts, were only killing us.”

The way his eyes locked with hers made shivers crawl down her spine, her heart pick up its pace and her head feel light, “If,” he began, “if I asked you to give us, our younger selfs too, the chance to fix what we had, would you agree?”.

Her lips dried, and her eyes felt as though there was shards of glass in them, however, somewhere in the lump inside her throat, she found her voice, “if they,” she swallowed thickly, “If we, did try again, we’d have to go slow, very slow.”

“You would pick the pace.”

“Just slow, little by little.”

“Okay.”

“Jungkook,” he chuckled behind her, his hands still on her eyes as he walked behind her, ultimately leading the way for both of them, “im a little nervous not gonna lie.”

“Just trust me okay?”

She sighed, trusting him with pretty much everything and anything. Between the charity event and now, everything between them was not exactly as they said. It wasn’t that everything was moving too fast or too slow, matter of fact it wasn’t moving. Almost as if they hit the rewind button on their relationship, everything they had before was restored, just a lot more better. Like an update with fixed bugs and better versions. It was fun, it was simple but it was everything they’d die for.

The dates were getting crazier and crazier, from fine dining to jet helicopter flights over their town. It was everything she didn’t need to survive, but everything she throughly loved and appreciated from him. He was the little eye of her life now as was she to him. It wasn’t something that could ever break, she was sure if that.. always.

“Ready baby?”

Adjusting to the bright sun, her eyes squinted for a second. Until a boat came into her sight. It was large. White and beautiful. On the edge of its nose was her name written in pink ‘suki’. He named the damned boat after her, it was only natural for her eyes to well up with tears and her lips turned into the little pout he absolutely loved kissing away.

“Do you like it?” He asked her as pecked another sweet kiss on her lips.

“I love it.” She sobbed softly. “I love you.”

His heart stopped, exploding in shards of glitter and all things happy. He damn near fainted, “you love me?”

She wrapped her arms around his neck, tip toeing to reach his lips and wrap them in the most divine kiss ever, “I love you.”

“I love you”.

Before she knew it, half a year past and she was moving in with him and his huge dog bam. Not that she was complaining because she absolutely adored bam. She loved him more than she loved herself. But despite it all, bam is a highly energetic dog, knocking her down with the box she was carrying when he ran right into her.

“Bam!” Jungkook yelled, quickly setting the other boxes down to help her.

“I’m fine!! He didn’t hurt me, he’s just high energy right now.”

As he helped her up his face told her that he was thinking deeply, as bam stood behind her on deep guard, “he’s been a lot more stand off’ish beside you now. He’s so protective of you, I’m beginning to believe he loves you more than me.”

Suki chuckled, pecking Jungkook cheek quickly as she ran her palm down her sides to dust off her sundress, she began bending down to pick up her box before stopping mid way, “I don’t think bam could ever love you more than anyone else.”

That wasn’t a lie, the dog was like jungkooks tail, wherever Jungkook went you could almost be certain bam followed. He was an imprint of Jungkooks character and Suki learned that quite quickly.

It started with bam following suki for small distances, from the living room to the kitchen, watching her closely as she would unpack stuff, wash them and organise them neatly around their new home. Then it rapidly became more protective. He followed her everywhere, tangling between her feet as she’d walk. He’d even guard her bathroom door as she’d do her business or even shower.

“Bam, chill im alright” Suki giggled as she sat on the couch, robe tight and cozy around her body as she snuggled into her boyfriends side.

The dog laid its head on her lap, looking straight into Suki’s eyes and whimpering, “kook maybe somethings wrong with him? Maybe he’s sick? Should we get him to a vet?”.

Jungkook sighed, brows scrunched and lips slightly pouted, “he seems fine, he’s eating, playing and generally normal aside from being attached to your hip 24/7.”

Jungkook had a point, the more suki kept an eye on the dog, the more she recognised that he truly was fine, he was just a lot more involved in her life than ever. He won’t let Jungkook touch her waist anymore, everything else is fine. He’s always on high alert, just like the time she screamed in the bathroom because she saw a spider and he came rushing in with Jungkook, with bared teeth and hunting posture.

Suki began to pay more attention to the way he was acting around her. When she’d come home, normally, he’d jump all over her, but recently he’s only been coming around her, letting her pet him while he’d sniff her belly. From time to time he’d nudge her stomach, lay his head on it or move his head side to side, whimpering.

It only became apparent to Suki when Jungkook and she were sitting on the couch, devouring the Krispy Kreme she’d begged Jungkook to get her because she was having cravings.

“You know,” he started, wiping his hands with a tissue, “I read somewhere that uh, dogs can sense when a woman is going through changes…”

She raised her brows, “changes?”

He nodded his head towards bams direction, the dogs head leaned against her belly. Suki’s eyes widened.

“Surely you don’t believe im pregnant?”

“Well… you are late on your period.”

Suddenly, everything became very clear to her. It made her nausea, the doughnut suddenly felt like the plague and she felt dizzy. It was only a matter of time before she rushed to the bathroom throwing up. She weren’t sure wether it was the realisation or wether it was the symptoms. Either or, suki agreed with Jungkook to get a pregnancy test.

She freshened up by the time Jungkook came home with three tests. She took all of them at the same time, pacing the bathroom with her heart beating a thousand miles an hour, bam sat beside her whimpering and sniffing as finally the timer on her phone rang. Both Suki and Jungkook immediately going for the tests.

“Positive.”

Suki always hoped that sometime, she’d reunite with Jungkook, maybe even become friends if the timing was right. What she got in return, was a lot more than that. Bringing home their first born son made her smile brighter than the morning sun. It was truly amazing how much someone could change within a couple of years. And just how destiny can truly transform someone’s life. She’d never imagined being this successful. Being engaged to her first true love and welcoming a life of their love and hopes. It was truly amazing.

She stretched with a yawn as bam came out of his bed, carefully approaching the baby he has protected while it was still living inside of you. He sniffed him, before laying beside the car seat and laying his head just on the edge of it. Immediately making you at the peace.

This was all you ever needed. A home, love and a family.

Some super stray thoughts I had while reading STCO so far:

Knuckles would NOT prioritize his past over Tikal’s suffering are you crazy in the head!!!!

Zak Simond-Hurn’s art is really charming, if it wasn't for the digital onomatopoeias, I wouldn’t mind having this style by a base for an official sonic comic! The design for the red echidna villain however… HM. Not pleasing to the eye.

I like that Ebony are having a bigger role on the fist few issues! But also Ebony’s constantly referring to Super as his friend and doing things to bring him back. Like I get it but also is this going to be her only trait now? Girl…

And porker is going on adventures again. Actually I don’t think they ever explained why Porker went back to being more adventurous in the og comic, participating in Chaos defeat and all. Not against it, and I like to see he still has a bit of bite and wasn't reduced to only a coward, tho it would’ve been cool to see at least a comment on how hes back on “adventuring”.

It’s cool to see Amy dealing with grief over Jhonny (I’ve given up trying to write his name correctly, too weird for me), but IDK. Amy probably was the best grounded character in that situation, so it feels weird to see her distressed over it? I don’t know how to explain it but in my eyes, Amy’s grief for Jhonny would definitively be more melancholic than scary/guilty. I’m glad they are trying to flesh out Amy more, but it doesn’t feel very cohesive with the comic to me. And Jhonny-zombie the killer… a bit tacky but in a funny way.

WHO…. Designed Vichama. I just want to talk. Tell me why you made him look that way. What is that. What went through your head. Dude. I get that Ebony has considerably more anthro body features than the other animal characters, but I feel like Vichama crosses the line into the “gross valley”. If he were drawn closer to how Zachary is I probably wouldn’t care, he probs would’ve looked like an Archie character. But the bulging muscles are kinda upsetting to look at. Cover up man.

So Shadow was created by some enemies of the echidnas. Noted.

Big and the Drakon prosecutor are actually really cute. I like them. Knuckles trying to break Ebony’s spell on Tikal is making me fume. HE WOULDN'T TRY TO DO THAT!!!!! He maybe would be a little desperate trying to trigger some memories but he wouldn't knowingly hurt someone to get information!!!! There is a pannel tho in this part of the comic that makes Knux ask “Where is Porker” and then “Where is the emeralds”. THAT is Knuckles to me, checking in on people before anything else.

Knuckles not being able to carry Big is bullshit. KNUCKLES PUNCHES ROCKS IN HALF LMAO. It’s fine I assume they need to be separated for a reason.

ROUGE STICK LEGS. Somebody please give my girl a double cheeseburger with extra fries and a big gulp of soda.

Actually I love that Rouge is a cunt here. Girlboss!!!! Stole this dudes emeralds AND left them to die, queen shit. Didn’t work but she did have the intent to kill them.

Big wouldn’t eat his friends….. He’d never eat Froggy, and DP (Drakon Prosecutor) even tho looks like a fish, Big considers a friend. BIG WOULDNT THINK ABOUT EATING HIS FRIENDS!!! HE IS A KIND BIG GUY!!!!!!!!!!!! ← most egregious mistake until now. Fucking funny tho can you imagine dying by vore They kept Mighty funny, that’s good.

MMMMN. I like that Sonic is consistently arachnophobic. Really nice continuity. How he first met Shadow tho… It felt underwhelming? Like yeah we know they were going to meet some time but IDK. The framing/pacing is weird to me. Either have them meet quickly at the start of the issue and Sonic is like “IDK WHO that guy is but I don’t like him!!!” or have them meet at the end of the issue, but only show Shadow in shadow (lol) to hook to the next issue. Shadow’s bland ass “I am Shadow” has the same energy as two kindergartners introducing themselves first day of school.

Shadow’s personality is interesting tho. I like him being a bit cocky but not too much, it’s a good take on him, plus he bounces off Sonic pretty well. I do wonder what the hell they’re going to do with him tho.

Awn… acknowledgment of some of the chaotix families… Blockhead Bill my dude

Tikal being given more of a spotlight is neat. It doesn’t give her much, but it’s refreshing to see her thoughts and intentions. However, I can’t help but think that she was mainly inserted to aid Knuckles and be a well of angst. Like IDK, Knuckles has moments mourning his past, or wondering if he will ever understand his ancestors, and Tikal well… She sees things rather than feel? If that makes sense? Like in this comic she is able to see a bit of the past and think “wow this is horrible! Must be a nightmare!” but she doesn’t feel despair? Or anything much? The only moment so far she felt despair was to make Knux Angst, like “ooooh shes suffering so we need to wipe her memories, that means Knuckles wont have his backstories :(“. Smells fishy.

Oh wow, Shadow has an actually interesting backstory here. It gives a reason to follow Robotnik, hate Sonic, not give a shit, aaaand its ambiguous enough you can probably pull off whatever. Fucking congrats STCO writers.

Hm. No thoughts on Shadows maybe death. Thematically it’s interesting and all, but we don’t get enough time with him to give a shit. Unless I’m reading it wrong it seems like Shadow is sacrificing himself to save Robotnik, but IDK.

Bro what’s with this Knuckles characterization. He would NOT be mean to Tikal. If anything he’d probably be a bit overbearing, trying to give attention to her even if she didn’t want it. I get trying to tie him living his whole life alone being overwhelmed and feeling frustrated that Tikal can’t give him answers, but he wouldn't treat her like crap what is this. I like Porker’s and Knux bro moment, but that doesn’t make up for treating Tikal badly for no reason. Where’s her catharsis? She’s probably just as confused and desperate as Knuckles but she doesn't get any of these moments. Sigh. This idea could’ve definitely worked if Tikal was pushier or more imposing, but like she doesn’t do much, so Knuckles just snaps and it feels off. Knuckles’s stories are probably the issues with the biggest potential, but the writers for sure squander him the most, whomp whomp.

“One of Sonic’s fears is seeing Amy settle down with someone else” no it isn’t shut the fuck up. And the fact they put this on the same level of fear as Jhonny death is deranged.

The tonal whiplash between character comics is p funny honestly. You’ll have one really serious comic followed by a comedic one, lil bit of a mood killer. I guess STC also did this, but to me it at least wasn't jarring like this. Like how am I supposed to process Big getting shot, after Knux and Tikal experiencing the worst nightmare of their lives, living the trauma of seeing million of dead echidnas, after Vector put angel island as a security fund for his ship LMAO.

SONIC CHARACTERS HELPINH OUT THE POLICE SFAJHBJHBWRKJBJB??????!!!!!!!!????????????????????!!!!!!!!!????????11111111!!!!!!!111!!!!111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate this actually.

These Shorty and Tekno comics…… I don’t know what it is about them but god. I just don’t like them! Firstly that now it seems they are a completely separated duo from the rest of the team. Like They don’t interact with Sonic or Amy or whatever. Secondly.. Shortfuse is TOO nice. It doesn’t feel like him where is his tantrums??? And this isn’t a diss on the artstyle itself, cause I think it looks pretty nice and cute, but I don’t think it’s really fitting for the characters? Tekno and Shorty look like they’re in a shoujo manga.

I really like how Sonic is now a loser LOL. He got canceled to hell and back.

Finally Rouge makes and appearance. Kinda only realized how little she showed up during the SA2 adaptation.

Grimer destroying Sonic’s reputation is actually kinda nice. I like that they acknowledge his Robotnik situationship depression, tho I think it’s a bit over the top have him be behind EVERYTHING. Still like it tho. Go gross boy go! (Also the art in this issue is REALLY solid, wow, Zak Simond-Hurn really is my favorite artist from the STCO group).

At some point I think I need to stop complaining about Knux’s characterization. But I Do Not Like How They Write My Boy. Doc Zach is still serving cunt so that’s great. Go grandpa go!

It’s kinda awesome to see how the issues expanded through STCO’s run, but I think having so many stories at the same time kinda makes stuff bloated. Like I’m sure I’ll forget some parts of this, even if they are short bits. Like do we really need to follow 2 sonic stories and 2 amy stories at the same time? I think it would’ve been better to pace this with a limit of 3-4 stories MAX per issue. And then once a character story is done, release the next story with the same character. Sonic and Knuckles are kinda always going to be there, having the biggest pull on the comic’s lore and story, so the other ones could cycle out between amy, tekno, shorty, tails, sonic’s world, chaotix, and so on. I haven’t read some of the other non-sonic stories like decap n attack, but those could be thrown in the cycle too!

Actually I love that DP is just hanging out in Big’s restaurant. It’s goofy I really love it.

I wonder how old Sonic’s gang is supposed to be here. Like in theory some years have passed in the comic, but how many. It’s not important at all but Amy is seen drinking wine with Chrysalis and it’s like?? Is she a kid?? Is she an adult?? Is she underage drinking? Again it’s not a big deal, and I don’t even think these characters need a specific age but IDK this was odd to me.

Oof the multiple stories at the same type problem came instantly. I like how Amy acknowledges the losses of the group, Sonic is “evil”, Jhonny is dead, Tekno is missing and stuff, Porker has PTSD and cant fight… But like. That feels so weird when you have a story right next to it with Amy and Tekno together!!! This is why the pacing and bloating feels whack, the comic has continuity with SOME of the stories but not all so its confusing. I know the OG comic had moments like these but because it had less stories per issue, it was way less noticeable, and usually were one-off stories I think.

And on the topic of Porker, I did mention before how he just kinda.. went back to being more adventurous? But know the comic insists that he can’t do it? Man this is kinda messy. I don’t mind Porker starting to become more adventurous again and then maybe regressing a bit in recovery, being too much for him, but it doesn’t feel like that is what it’s being intended here. It feels like someone read STC and maybe skimmed on STCO and then wrote this, so it feels out of place? Like you have porker in the first issue of STCO going on a mission no problems at all, but then on another issue he goes on a mission to blow up an eggman database or smth and hes freaking the fuck out being nervous all the time. Like which is it!!!!! I don’t mind him progressing and regressing on his trauma but at least acknowledge or be consistent with it! Is it because the underwater mission didn’t involve Robotnik? Is that it? Who knows.

I get that Knux and the crew planned to bait Zachary and shit, but like, then why did they act like that in the previous issue? Like the plan was to break the shield so why did Porker said to Knux be careful about it? Girl. This information is only given to bait and switch the audience and it doesn’t work. Porker and Knux have no reason to pretend to not have a plan when they are alone what.

Tails working with cops I’m going to kill myself.

Oh so like. The special zone is dead for real. Like for real FR. Jesus. Could’ve let the characters grieve a bit huh.

Really liked the #250 issue (Tho its funny that I complained about the number of stories per issue, and then #250 has ONE story LOL)! It’s awesome to see the different arts from the varied artists on the STCO team. And even with my complains and whining, it’s an impressive project full of love, good to see stuff like this!

The art on this issue is great but some of the flow of the dialogue is off, as in, sometimes I don’t know which speech bubble I’m supposed to read next, cause usually you go left to right, but it seems this story follows top to bottom for speech bubbles and left to right to panel. Not awful but it did throw me off, and it does fuck up the pacing.

I've been meaning to draw my OCs nail art styles for a hot minute but my brain refuses to draw little detailed stuff ever. BUT ANYWAYS since we're here let's talk Charlie and nails.

Charlie:

- Included in her 50,000 various hobbies and skills is nails! Whatever you need, she's got you covered, as long as you don't mind her swinging from wildly talkative to complete silence while doing them. - She does Luke's and Jonothan's nails all the time, especially Luke who is always down for something chunky, variated and fun. - She doodles design ideas all the time. But she highly encourages whoever she's doing a design for to draw out even a vague idea of what they want, makes it easier to work from. - BIG fan of junk nails, gyaru styles and in general, colours and glitter! Very rarely will she go for black or dark colours unless its to contrast something. - Whenever she's creating a piece of clothing she tends to also design alongside a nail set to go with it for the photo set that she will post to her blog and socials. - Actually one of the things she does for money is make stick on nail sets to sell online. - One of the reasons she's so big on junk nails (having a bunch of chunky charms, glitter and so on) is because its a way to always have something to stim with! Be it touching them, tapping them on something, feeling them along her mouth (IDK how to describe this except for like pass your thumb nail over your lips, that kinda motion) or just looking at them, moving them to see colour shifts and shadows move along. (no i'm not projecting shhhh)

I hope i can also do the other 2 pieces for Luke and Jonothan because i NEED to talk about their nail info too because i'm so normal about dropping random insignificant OC facts.

HI AGAIN BEANIE!!! Disclaimer I’m certainly not an expert BUT i’ll try my best 💙💙💙🫡🫡🫡

The murder of sonic the hedgehog is REALLY good. Its definitely got a lot of love packed into it and it shines through the whole thing. Its a favorite because its a little silly but they still work to take the characters seriously (idk. U can tell the devs really loved doing it. I think its all around a fantastic introduction to the series!)

I’ve been hooked on Sonic from a SUPER early age. Like playing on hand me down consoles and stuff. My favorite game ever was sonic and knuckles or sonic 3 and then it was sonic the fighters. And then every game after that until Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) for the xbox 360 came out and despite the glitches and everything else im sure anyone could tell you about it younger me just found it SO striking. Everything about it. I used to sit and watch all the cutscenes on youtube on the family computer like it was my JOB. Idk where the turning point was I’ve played all the other titles except for a couple here and there more recently but I def think you could start where-ever you want!!!

Theres some games I think most people in the fandom would agree are unplayable or just Bad (for any number of reasons, everyone has their opinions! But think like notoriously bad like sonic boom..or specifically sonic colors nintendo ds version) BUT I’m a firm believer that if Sonic 06 specifically didnt have game breaking issues it would have been a masterpiece (look up project 06…! its a labor of love and it made that game feel like what I thought it did when I was itty bitty and more. Beyond my expectations. Genuinely impressive and really shows how much could have been fixed/polished for gameplay/overall) obviously I’m very biased but 06 is something I’ll never get over and I think more people should see Project 06 because the work put into it is immaculate and really showcases what I loved and still love about that game

The fandubs are good! If you’re looking for more watching stuff instead of playing stuff the original remastered Sonic OVA movie is up on YouTube for free and I think you’d really enjoy that too! There’s some design choices (like knuckles just flying for half the movie/not gliding like he would in later titles) that are more timeline based (like they hadnt gotten a firm grasp in franchise what was what yet etc etc) but it really sticks to that charm that drew me in to begin with so its a 10/10 in my book.

Games I think you could start anywhere you’d like (even if people say you’ve GOTTA play x or y or z or whatever you do what you think you’d like) but as a die hard fan you know I’ve got to mention Sonic Adventure 2 or Heroes or one of those. More ‘recent’ games I’ve really enjoyed that didn’t feel rushed/scrapped halfway through.. Sonic Generations is good, Sonic Unleashed is good (and theres a short film called night of the werehog thats official you could watch!) Frontiers obviously is the best I think we’ve gotten in a while narratively.

And im biased but I really. REALLY like sonic and the black knight. I think it being on the wii was a little bad controls wise but it has some charm! The storybook ones (Sonic & The Secret Rings and Sonic & The Black Knight) were super interesting to me when they came out just because it was a fresh art style lol.. Still very charming to me

The Shadow The Hedgehog game will always hold a special place in my heart and I know you like that guy so if you haven’t checked out that game (it has so many endings.) I think you’d personally love it!!

Other than that I think IDW comics are really great if you can get your hands on em! I don’t read them very often if at all anymore but I keep up to date on new characters in gen (more out of interest for the designs and direction theyre going) but if you EVER get the chance to read the arc with the metal virus you absolutely should. All the comics are great but I think you especially would think that arc in particular is incredible

ONE FINAL NOTE IS THAT SONIC GAMES SOUNDTRACKS DO NOT EVER MISS A CHANCE TO GO HARD AS FUCK FOR NO REASON!!!! All of the games OST’s EVER have at least one song for everybody on planet earth and I will not retract that statement ever. If u havent listened to any I highly recommend it

So Red will going to get an alter, but what type of operator do you think she will be?

(I also would like to hear your ideas about Crownslayer, Lappland and Demitri)

Gosh I'll take a crack at it but I can't say I'm good at this lol may be rambly/long however so I'll put it under the cut

I'll go under the assumption that Alters won't be the same class as they originally were, which makes it both easier and harder at the same time.

For instance! Lappland! Musha feels natural cause she's already using Eastern style swords but she likely won't cause she's already a guard.

Lappland:

I'll mention parts of Zaaro's boss kit as possible features for her regardless of whether it's something that can be attributed to her or not.

Ambusher Specialist: This is actually my personal favourite option for her and only thought of it today

Lappland's S1 has an inbuilt dodge as well as Zaaro having a 30% physical and arts damage reduction

Lappland has Silence built into her kit and Zaaro has a health draining mechanic, an aspd reduction mechanic and a bind of sorts (operators can't be retreated)

Lappland has notably strong arts that could very well be used in a Ambusher's range (with a lord's range already encompassing much of an ambusher's range) and the way in which her arts are mentioned to degrade could explain why as an ambusher it has short range, doesn't go far and is used in short bursts as well as her being a melee fighter why she'd prefer to attack enemies closer to her

Zaaro's abilities could be used her skills, with his roar ability used to apply debuffs with a short range, his ability to use shadows (via IS-10) to manifest shadow wolves or possibly more to increase the range and maybe add some features like attacks that hit the enemies even when they leave Lappland's range

Other ideas are:

Arts Protector Defender: If they want to keep her melee orientated and have her use arts they could go for this. Her S1 already makes her somewhat tanky (though dodge tank) and Shalem's kit I can imagine them upgrading for her kit (health drain sounds fun for her and will come up but moreso multi-targeting arts snakes that are similar to her S2)

Duelist Defender: Similar reasons as Arts Protector but having her focus more on dps, finding ways to ramp up some aspects of her kit (debuffs could be used like Eunectes S1. Dodging as a different way to tank) and incorporating arts into her kit as a different way to deal damage rather than being a stat stick. As well as just being fitting name wise

Only thing with either of these is the idea of her using a shield cause idk what would be used (though with Leithania and Siracusa's relationship the idea of incorporating something like Czerny's piano or an actual sundial sounds fun). Like I like the mental image of her design being less sleek and more built up in the way that Texas Alter's swords are so huge and it's a thing for Duelist Defenders that she can keep her base look somewhat intact while still being a Defender

But one idea that... is an idea is having Zaaro as a shield. Like him just standing next to her, using his 30% damage reduction to tank hits while Lappland herself focuses more on dishing out damage with some help of Zaaro but that's a crack thought if ever I've thought of one.

Hexer Supporter: Again on the idea of her inflicting debuffs and using arts. I can imagine Zaaro working like Morte or Skadi Alter's seaborn. In fact I'd see it as a 6* version of Shamare like how Gnosis shares a lot of elements with Pramanix.

Mech-Accord Caster: Her S2 already has multiple projectiles and between her own arts, the possibly use of shadow wolves and Zaaro himself this could be a fun idea. Specifically I have that one cg of Zaaro in a smoke like form in my head or how Lappland's arts and E2 portraying wolves similar would work as a drone (just that as the drone they'd be attacking not with their own projectiles)

Incantation Medic: This is purely for my own entertainment (and cause I had this thought before Reed Alter) but the idea of Lappland being a ranged Musha, maybe incorporating a Geek Specialist/Fiammetta mechanic or incorporating a Warfaring S2 or even a Kal'tsit Mon3tr with her and Zaaro just sounds fun to work with.

Demetri:

Trapper Specialist: So it's curious because I feel this is the one I'm most sold on but it's really mainly based on similarities with Robin aka the case he has with him and the knife which I can't picture him as a melee unit with it.

Also in Il Siracusano he's close to Vigil (also ranged), has a more intelligence based role in the Bellone family (Consigliere) and an unassuming cover (Bartender) and appears to not be that much of a fighter as he doesn't dare to fight Lappland and loses to Wallach.

Which very much gives him the impression of someone who'd rather fight smart and use what's to his advantage as opposed to through strength or firepower (such as Vigil having to save him).

I also quickly read up and Demetri is the one who set up a car bomb and attempted to assassinate Penance and is frequently scheming. Which, isn't necessarily indicative of a Trapper but is him... setting traps and ambushes... so I think it works lol

Agent Vanguard: This is for a lot of reasons as the above, with him scheming and ambushing but it's also that if his knife is to be used as a melee weapon that it'd fit a Agent AND right? The Executor sign on him. What if he was intended to be an Executor but they ended up repurposing him into an Agent instead since they share similar mechanics.

Crownslayer:

So Demetri is the one I'm the most confident about whereas Crownslayer is the one I'm the least. Mostly because the two archetypes I thought would be best for her I really doubt now.

Those being Swordmaster Guard, because of her weapon of choice and the anime depicting her throwing knives which give me the image of Cutter and the Ch'en's own S2.

And Pioneer Vanguard, because she's acted as the Vanguard of Reunion and her frequency as a boss feels like a good translation into how Vanguards are what you deploy first and her smoke ability feels like Flametail's S2...

But yeah. There's already three of those.

And I don't rightly know what else she could be without saying that she will be a archetype that we already got recently. Not unless she's an Agent or some strange Charger Vanguard. I don't think she has the physical defense or fits as a Duelist Defender either.

So really lost for her.

Projekt Red:

With her there's less to work with than Lappland, nothing so concrete as to Demetri but a good image as opposed to Crownslayer. Like honestly I think Red could fit for a lot of things and I have a preference for what she'd be that other things are pushing me towards, though that's not to say I don't have other ideas.

Musha: This is my current choice because I think that the aspd buff, the penchant for lane holding/working on their own and survivability rather works with what we know of Red.

She's got an Outstanding in mobility and is noted as having a concise and brutal fighting style.

She's noted as being a Lone Wolf alongside Skadi. Her current archetype being meant for assassinating and working on it's own, as well as Fangs in general working on their own and in fact not allowed to work with others.

I also think that Red having dodge could work as it's survivability and similar to how Noir Corne Rathalos works with his two skills.

And even like Utage has a helidrop skill that would work with Red's base kit like how Specter Alter's S2 and S3 share features with her base as well as Gavial's S1 and others.

Also Red is rather squishy and Musha's have rather low def in exchange for high health and tenacity and I think that it just works with Red's lone wolf, fierce and fast nature as a fighter.

Could also make a point about Hellagur having an Outstanding in Combat Skill as well as Red but I can't picture her as anything other than a guard because of how good of a fighter is, how she's supposed to be able to hold her ground but also how she's not the most defensive character.

Only thing about Mushas is that I can't picture her with a Higashi sword and that honestly feels like a prerequisite if not having to be or know a Higashi character.

But I think that's dumb and want to see the mechanics of any class not be restricted to having to include certain design features.

Anyway, I could also picture her as an Agent (though I think it's too similar to her current kit) or a Duelist Defender due to it's... Duelist nature. And maybe certain Sniper classes, though I do hope that she is a melee unit just cause her module defines her as someone who doesn't try new things and I doubt Grandma taught her how to use many things.

Realizing now how biased I am regarding Red's archetype. I'll probably be wrong but I do think it ticks a lot of boxes lol anyway there's that. I might've rushed it at the end of Red's cause I've yet to do a ton of things but I hope this is good enough!

for george, he does in fact like napping a lot around Hills of Mildew (on the eastern side of the map) inside his own hut and doesnt really care about anything and only goes outside to stretch his legs and look at the horizon

theres an arena in barkals, people bet money and fight to the death for it, that's where Dream met techno! while techno was watching dream fight in the arena, he was impressed by his agility and strength and decided to challenge him to a duel outside of the arena. obviously, techno beat dream and thus begun their playful rivalry

Anyway, I love these guys. The fire head design is sooo cool. Idk if its just your style or if it looks a certain way for a reason, but it reminds me of autumn leaves and sticks. Which feels apt, for something so nature-themed. A skrunkly guy, I bet he thinks he's the coolest kid on the block. I'd like to hear the thoughts behind those eyes xD

Faceclaims: Ellie Kendrick and Patrick Wolf. Idk when or why, but I got it in my head that the music of 1989 was largely naff, but then I started digging and it turns out there are a lot of songs about the difficulty of being in the spotlight while going through private turmoil. So - I hope you all like pain!

1) Yes it’s Ben Jonson’s poem, but sung by Johnny Cash. Technically only released on a later album, but I’m going to assume there was precedent for him and others performing it live in this style - Paul Robeson made it a big hit too, but the guitar version here is more Philippa. It’s *probably* the best I can do for a band AU equivalent to ‘Tant que je vive’, for now, at least, and Philippa has been established to be a big fan of Johnny Cash already.

2) The title of this is also a bit of a Renaissance Easter egg, but the lyrics don’t seem to resemble the text known as the Ship of Fools. 1988/89 were the big years for Erasure, but Pippa will probably have got to know them earlier, when she was working with charities and protest groups in London - Andy Bell having been out and proud from the beginning. I close my eyes and I try to imagine What you're dreaming Why can't you see what you're doing to me? My world is spinning The lyrics also make reference to ‘the baby of the class’, which I think plays on Philippa’s worry that Francis doesn’t take her seriously because of her age, and Francis’ own determination to prove himself outside Richard’s shadow.

3) This album features on so many of my playlists, but it’s really got it all! Philippa is again established to be an Elvis Costello fan in the AU. This is one of the most lyrically obtuse on the album, and fits with Philippa being as reticent to admit what she really feels as Francis is. It’s weird and increasingly troubling, which I do think fits Philippa’s search for information about Francis’ past, and how deep in she gets. A stripping puppet on a liquid stick Gets into it pretty thick A butterfly drinks a turtle's tears But how do you know he really needs it? Because a butterfly feeds on a dead monkey's hand Jesus wept, he felt abandoned You're spellbound baby there's no doubting that Did you ever see a stare like a Persian cat?

4) Keeping her folk roots - under Austin’s influence, but this song (from a woman who disappeared on the cusp of stardom in the 1970s - she turned up about 30 years later explaining that she’d had the mother of all bad trips) doesn’t need much explaining. The lyrics fit Checkmate so well: He was a stargazer She asks what'll the future bring Mercury and Jupiter will bring you wealth and golden rings They have climbed the hill and watched the sun go down to rest He said: "Will you be my friend? I fear that there's nothing left to give, my Lady" She said: "Let's follow the sun behind the hill To where it's hiding." He was a stranger to her His father was a poet Lead her by the hand on the hill Touch the golden sunset How did feelings die, he's afraid to know Why did she have to lie She'd only stay until it's time for her to go She said take the sun in your hands, be glad For this is love you hold.

5) ANY opportunity to put one of my all time favouritest songs on a playlist! But genuinely, it’s all about the unrequited love, the pining, the thinking that the other person is better off without you... Very much a Philippa perspective on Francis and Catherine d’Albon. Plus she could play a cover with the Northumbrian pipes instead of the Uilean pipes :’) And this is where I want to be This is what I need This is where I want to be This is what I need This is where I want to be But I know that this will never be mine

6) It’s maybe more precisely how Francis feels about Philippa, but as with the other playlist for them, I think a certain degree of overlap is inevitable. This is one of Adam’s favourite bands, so Pippa’s bound to encounter their new release on the tour bus or at a party. 7) This one is just. Aughh. Philippa is in the midst of a media storm now, it’s been brewing ever since she came back from Las Vegas married to Francis Crawford with an adopted (sure, the world says, ‘adopted’) child. She’s trying to make the world better, trying to work out what kind of career she wants/what kind of music is ‘hers’, and in the middle of it she’s realised she actually loves the man she’s married to, who hasn’t yet managed to divorce her, but is publicly dating a huge French star and is also plastered all over the papers...papers that doubtless have much to say about both their sexuality, too. And like, yeah, this was released in 1989, it was one of the biggest albums of the year. It's only a life to be Twisted and broken They'll see the heartache They'll see our love break, yeah They'll hear me pleading I'll say for God sakes Over and over and over And over again, yeah

8) Neil Tennant, a fellow Geordie who refuses to talk about his sexuality to the slavering mob? He’s also since emerged as a big backer of Labour (prior to the 2000s anyway) and is a trustee in Elton John’s AIDs foundation. So definitely another of Pippa’s Ringed Castle contacts. They probably bonded over their shared love of Elvis Costello’s protest songs. And then there’s the lyrics. I mean: What have you got to say of shadows in your past? I thought that if you paid, you'd keep them off our backs But I don't care, baby, I'm not scared What have you got to hide? Who will it compromise? Where do we have to be so I can laugh and you'll be free? I'd go anywhere, baby, I don't care I'm not scared

9) Another album likely nicked from Adam, though they were also buddies of Neil Tennant. One for Pippa learning to find her own way between the music she grew up with (that Austin insists she should foreground) and the world she’s been involved in in London. Probably a bit of a manifesto, trying to toughen herself up for life after the divorce: It don't take no Houdini To tell me what I am Parasites and literasites They'd burn me if they can But I don't give a damn About what those people say They pick you up and kick you out They hurt you every day It takes years to find the nerve To be apart from what you've done To find the truth inside yourself And not depend on anyone

10) So, this is the kind of...folk rock that the ‘80s got. Bouncy! It’s also not actually a folk song I can identify, I think it was written by the band. It can be interpreted in light of the triangles in Checkmate - Catherine/Francis/Philippa and Francis/Philippa/Austin, plus Philippa’s own mission to find out about Francis at all costs. Penny the hero, Penny the fool The gold watch she gave me I'll treasure They say that it's only a game after all Apart from the pain it's a pleasure Seagull, seagull, three three in a bed...

11) More ‘80s folk! Clannad and Enya were getting big at this point, but this particular album again has a lot of Francis/Philippa relevant feelings. I just put this track on though, for the obvious...trying to work out if a relationship is still possible after painful revelations and public separation. 12) Despite the mid-’80s rumours that she was homophobic, Donna Summer seems to have spent quite a lot of time and effort (in 1989 no less) on refuting those rumours (true, on the level of ‘some of my best writers are gay!’). And she is, after all, Queen of Disco. But Pippa and Danny have to have something to belt out together on tour bus karaoke nights! But I don't think she can take it And just friendship can't replace it She'll be strong enough for two Although it's hard for her to do She'll breakaway Ooh, ooh, ooh she'll breakaway

13) Ahh, someone had to make folk music cool again <3 Tracy is a gorgeous guitarist and singer, just the kind of inspiration Philippa needs when she’s feeling a bit lost at this end of the decade. What’s that? Another artist who is constantly badgered about their sexuality and refuses to talk about it? A second album dealing with the loss of privacy that comes with fame? She played at an Amnesty International set in London in ‘88, I hope Philippa got the chance to hang out with her then :) All you folks think you own my life But you never made any sacrifice Demons they are on my trail I'm standing at the crossroads of the hell I look to the left I look to the right There're hands that grab me on every side

14) Now this one ain’t from the 1980s, but Annie’s been established as an influence on Philippa (and Kate) from the start, and it’s this kind of pared-back, folk-club-friendly stuff that Austin’s probably hoping to get her back into. Bert Jansch and others helped to make this song Annie wrote big, so for Philippa there’s a bittersweet side to the fact that this song, written by a woman, not a traditional tune, was only recognised as being important when men started playing it (side-eyeing Austiiiiinnn). 15) This is like...the quintessential folksong for lamenting giving up your virginity to some useless guy who only wanted that from you and nothing more. 16) I know we’ve kind of reached a point where people think it’s basic to say this is the best Christmas song ever, but actually, it is. So there. It’s perfect. It does contain the f-slur yes, as Shane McGowan says, it’s part of the persona Kirsty is singing, though he has also said he’s quite happy for it to be cut when people play it now. And we’ve had Pogues and Kirsty on Pippa playlists/inspiration lists before, too. Annie Lennox is from the same cut as a lot of other artists here: she’s done a lot of activism and fundraising, played the Mandela charity set in ‘88 and has been a big supporter of LGBT+ rights since appearing in an early Eurythmics video with short-cropped hair and a suit on. Per Wikipedia: ‘Lennox was viewed as the female version of Boy George. They appeared together on the front cover of the British music magazine Smash Hits in December 1983 with the headline "Which one is the boy?".‘ Stay classy, British music press. Professor Layton Iceberg Explanation

As I said in the tags of the original, the iceberg I made was a meme consisting of both real theories and satire/parodies/fandom memes. If anyone is interested, I can work on an unironic version that only has real theories.

Buckle in because this post is LONG and heavily saturated with lore and information.

Actual theories

Parallel universe 1960s where the world wars didn’t happen. There’s an unused file in Curious Village that shows the year as 1960 and the time machine from UF is set to 1973, ten years into the future. The series canonically takes place in an undefined time period (hence the technological inaccuracies and fantasy elements), but it’s based off the 60s. There’s more evidence but we don’t have time to go over every little thing. The real meaning behind the statue in Future London. In UF, the purpose of the statue is to spark Layton and Luke’s conversation about their friendship. Luke is stressing out about moving overseas and sees himself and the professor in the story behind the statue, but in the bigger picture, Clive must have been the one to commission it. Some theorize that the little boy is Clive and the man is either his father or the professor. One idea I’ve seen is that Clive wishes he could be Luke for real, while another is that he wishes he died ten years ago, and another is that he’s literally terminally ill explaining why he doesn’t care about consequence. Personally, I think “the boy succumbed to his illness” refers to his mental illness seeing as he wanted the professor to save him from his madness as he saved him all those years ago.

True location of Monte D’Or. there are no deserts on the British isles to my knowledge, so it makes the most sense for Monte D’Or to be in Southwest USA where English is the default language, they have a desert, and there exists a city famous for flashy hotels, casinos, and entertainment. What makes it odd is that nobody ever mentions overseas travel, and all the major characters are from England.

Loosha’s origins are not explicitly explained if I remember correctly, but the implication was that her prehistoric (supposedly) species was sealed away along with the garden, allowing them to survive all the way to the time of LS until Loosha was the only one left. The garden provided a good habitat and protection from predators, and it’s logical that they’d slowly die out anyways, but there’s no explanation of any specific factors that led to Loosha being the last.

Beasley is not a bee I wrote a post about this one as well, but TL;DR Beasly lacks several defining bee traits whilst having several human ones. He is not human, yet, by definition, not a bee. Subject 2’s identity is currently unknown. There is a subject one (parrot) and subject 3 (rabbit) so there has to be a second. For a long time, people suspected Beasly to be him seeing as he’s a bit of an amalgamation and definitely not a regular bee (see above). After the release of LMJ, though, people began to suspect Sherl, the intelligent hound who could speak to certain people but not others. That being said, it’s possible for one to be subject 4. Sherl’s memory of a bright flash matches up with subject 3’s memory of being electrocuted. They never explain why the animals were being experimented on, but it was probably Dimitri making sure the conditions of his machine were safe for humans before reliving the incident from ten years ago.

Lady Violet died from the plague from DB. There’s no evidence for this or anything, it’s just an idea. People say she died from the flu but I don’t remember them saying that in the game, at least the US version. Extending off my “no war” theory: it’s theorized that the Spanish Flu was spread by the travlelling soldiers, so if that’s true, it’s possible for the epidemic to have been averted for some decades. Maybe the Spanish Flu reached England later than in real life. The hole in this is that DB’s plague must’ve been close in time to 1918 while Violet’s death was much later, so it would’ve had to stick around.

Bill Hawks is working with Targent and Arthur Cantabella. There was a force in the shadows buying the time machine technology from Bill. Someone with a ton of money who helped him cover up a freak accident and get away with it completely, a feat that involved shady means like violence by hired thugs. Some theorize that it was Targent, seeking power over time in exchange for a little mafia magic. The Labarynthia project was sponsored by the UK government, so as the PM, Bill must’ve known about it. He probably supported dubiously ethical, high stakes (witch pun) psychological experiments like Cantabella’s and helped him stay in the shadows.

All the NPCs in St. Mystere and Folsense are dead. I make fun of this type of theory later, but they’re admittedly captivating. I’m pretty sure the canon in CV is that the villagers are Bruno and Augustus’s OCs that they made robots of and built a town around, but it’s more interesting to think that the village was there before, and the townspeople died of a plague and were replaced like Lady Violet. In Folsense, there really was a plague and they never explain the NPCs there. They’re either real people who appear way younger than they are due to hallucinations (even the ones who already look old ?), or they don’t exist at all, which is pretty spooky. This part of the story is a gaping plot hole. In a similar vein to CV, the edgy yet plausible theory is that they used to live in Folsense but died of the plague and now live on as hallucinations.

Hershel seeing everything as a puzzle is a coping mechanism for all his trauma. This was a joke but I thought about it for more than five seconds and it makes way too much sense.

Plot holes and unexplained questions that we like to overthink because it’s fun

The downfall of the Azran was vaguely explained in canon by people being so greedy that it lead to the civilization collapsing. It’s not a stretch to imagine that happening, but it would’ve been more interesting with a little more detail.

Layton and Luke are programmed to routinely forget how to walk. I didn’t know whether to list this in the joke section or not, but it’s odd that the characters actively participate in the walking tutorial (as opposed to showing a little memo to the player) as if they didn’t know how to before, especially when they go through this several times a year.

The truth behind Pavel. He’s simply a joke character who teleports, is a polyglot (sort of, at least he wants us to think he is) and is mega confused all the time. He’s a fun character to make crack theories about because of his cryptic nature that even he doesn’t seem to understand.

Miracle Mask deleted scenes. The first trailer for MM featured animations that were not in the final game. One was the Randall falling scene, except in a slightly different style than the one we know. Others were completely foreign, like Layton and Luke pacing across a theatre stage as if Layton’s about to expose someone with a dramatic point. Cut content and “could’ve beens” are always curious to think about.

Evan Barde: secret mastermind. Arianna and Tony’s dad is a mysterious character who died under mysterious circumstances. I think the canon is that his death was a genuine accident, but concept art of him making a creepy evil face suggests that maybe he originally had a larger role in the first drafts of LS than the finished game.

The secret to how Paul and Des pull off their disguises is unclear and will remain unclear. There is no plausible explanation for their shape shifting. Unless Paul is just a little dude wearing a human suit like that one Wizard of Oz species and Des is the best quick-changer ever and hides his naturally feminine legs under his cloak.

Alfendi’s mom. When LBMR came out people scrambled to piece together who Hershel had a kid with, but there’s no way alfendi is his biological son. This happened with Kat as well and her biological parents turned out to be brand new characters, so I’m sure Al will get an adoption backstory if his arc continues, be his parents old major characters or nameless, faceless NPCs.

Granny Riddleton and Stachenscarfen are omnipotent deities. Idk which section this fits best under, but these two characters have some serious power. At first introduction, they’re implied to be robots, but they appear everywhere in later games. They follow the Professor wherever he goes and assist him on his adventures, GR collecting puzzles and housing them by some odd magic, and Stachen teaches you how to walk. They both introduce and supervise the gameplay. By extension, I guess this idea could apply to Albus as well in the prequels. GR and Stachen even had the power to appear in LMJ, something no major character could do. I consider them akin to the velvet room attendants from the Persona games.

Clive’s kill count is a vague subject in the game for the sake of keeping it PG. I don’t know if anyone’s ever mathematically estimated the damage he caused, and I sure don’t want to try, but the game appears to push the idea that he didn’t kill anyone at all, saying they stopped him in the nick of time and things like that, even though we watch him raze the city. If they ever want to bring him back post-time skip, I can see them twisting it so that the mobile fortress cutscene wasn’t a linear sequence of events, but instead a compilation of scenes over the course of hours so that London neighborhoods around him could be evacuated and have it make sense. Knowing Level-5, it’s more likely that they wouldn’t think this deep and do something more lazy, though.

Memes and references

Post-time skip Flora is real references the famous L is real theory from Super Mario 64. Like Luigi in SM64, Flora was also a highly anticipated character who didn’t appear in a new game, in this case LMJ or LMDA. In the end, Luigi did become real in the DS port so hopefully Flora is real will be realized as well.

Hershel can’t read is a veteran fandom meme referring to how in the first few games, especially Curious Village, Layton asks Luke to read every document out loud for him. Perhaps this was an exercise to improve Luke’s reading skills and independent thinking, or perhaps he was just too lazy or preoccupied to do it himself, but this grew into the joke that our genius Professor was actually illiterate this whole time.

Layton’s smash invitation is hidden in PLvsAA. It’s no secret that the fandom would kill a man to get the Professor into the smash brothers franchise. In PLvsAA one of the puzzle artworks features a goat eating a familiar white envelope with a red stamp, sparking the joke that either Layton or Wright got the invitation their respective fans desired, but it got lost along the way.

The science board is the mysteriously vague organization Don Paolo got kicked out of for the crime of being evil. It’s the epitome of liberal arts majors and art school graduates trying to bs their way around not knowing any science and failing miserably. “He was very good at all the sciences, but then the CEO of science told him to stop because he was using the power of science for evil science”. They do this again when “Dr. Stahngun” describes his time machine what with the soolha coils and whatnot.

Hoogland is death cult initiation is a parody of “Mario 64 is Freemason initiation” which is ridiculous, just like the creepy human sacrifice subplot of AL.

You can see the reflection of someone watching you in Aurora’s eye references the famous, creepy Talking Angela theory. In retrospect it would’ve been funnier if I said Angela instead of Aurora.

Every copy of Professor Layton is personalized references the famous “every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized”

Clive’s fat ass in HD is a meme that originated from the announcement of UFHD, saying that half of the excited fans wanted to cry again while the other half were simply attracted to Clive. If we want to enter real bottom-section-of-the-iceberg-chart territory then let’s say Clive’s character has some sort of psychological siren properties that draw people to him like a magnet and/or Harry Styles.

Things I pulled out of my ass for shits and giggles

Infinite hint coin hack: I’m sure a tech savvy cheater could hack the game for infinite hint coins, but there’s no easy or interesting way. I don’t know why someone would do that though, considering a lot of the hints suck and there are puzzle guides on the internet.

Cringy, unused Randall villain monologue. This joke is derived from the actual scrapped MM content as well as deleted content being a popular element of iceberg charts, but it’s sadly not real. Would’ve been hilarious, though.

Last Specter Puzzle 031: Light Height tracks and records children’s intelligence level. It doesn’t, but it’s always fun to make fun of arguably THE most ridiculously difficult puzzle in the franchise. (Seriously, do they expect 7+ year olds to know trigonometry???)

Hershel struggles with tea addiction. Hershel from the games drinks tea in moderation, but the manga begs to differ. He has a tea set in the Laytonmobile, and an attempt at teatime while driving causes him to crash.

Folsense is a metaphor for Alzheimer’s. This is inspired by those edgy kids’ show theories where everyone’s in hell or something, but nobody has ever said this.

London Life is reality and the plot of the games is all in Luke’s head. That’s one way to fill every plot hole. How funny would it be if Luke made up crazy characters and stories based off his fellow townspeople Sharkboy and Lavagirl style. “This dude who lives in a castle and asks people to give him all their money for nothing in return is a vampire from 50 years ago involved in a tragic love story”.

Secret ending encoded into Tago’s Head Gymnastics. It’d be crazy if there was, and Dimitri would hound Tago for the secret to time travel. If you didn’t know, the Layton games started as an adaption of Akira Tago’s puzzle series, except they decided to add a story to make it more interesting and marketable.

Daily puzzles datamine your DS. I’m bad with technology but is it even possible to datamine a DS??? Idk, but I think my DS lite from 2008 is safe.

So this is a bit belated but I was tagged bye @ahdriking for

10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 Tags!

I'm bad at tagging people but let's assume 10 people will see this and they should all consider themselves tagged! ;)

This is so difficult! Characters and their stories go in one side and out the other unless they really strike a chord with me. It's pretty rare that I remember them explicitly and even rarer to seek out fandom. However! I pulled together 10 characters that did mean the world to me so here we go!

Howl's Moving Castle - Specifically the absolutely wreck that is Howl Pendragon (book version is best but Ghibli had that clutterbitch aesthetic and I dig it). He's fussy, he's a bitch, he's got THE worst case of 'gifted child syndrome' and I love him. Also Sophie looks at him and thinks, "You could fix him? Well I can stoop to his level," and that's grand. Bad bitch solidarity.

Teen Wolf - I encountered this show and read fanfiction about this show before I watched the show. Thank god I did. The show has a definite campy quality and it fits the typical questionable taste of every CW show I've sat through, but STILES STILLINSKI makes it all worth it. Silly little ADHD boy who's literally the best friend ever (even if his loyalties often narrow down to the friend only and not the friend's loved ones) and no one in this show deserved him. Also Void Styles was just sofucljlsdkfjlsjkj.

Hannibal - While I love Will dearly, Mads Mikkelson's Hannibal Lecter made this show for me. I watched this with a friend and we cackled like crows every time he made a cannibal joke. His fashion is immaculate (and awful? but it works) and he openly murders homophobic assholes. What's not to like?

Sens8 - Can I consider them one entity? Just the whole entangled lot of them?? I love them so much. I love the dynamic of them being there for each other and connecting with each other across varied experiences, beliefs, and ideologies. I love them learning to cope together and becoming something greater than any one of them individually. If the polycule cluster doesn't count as one, then I'm going with Amanita. Who is decidedly not part of the cluster but is the best individual character with her 3 dads.

American Gods - So sticking to season one on this? I honestly didn't make it super far into season two and haven't seen a scrap of season three. Gossip would have me believe it was downhill from there but idk. Anyway. SALIM and his boyfriend sweater. Salim getting what he thought he always wanted and practically throwing it away because the Djinn/Jinn/Ifrit(?) railed him so good and he's in love. Did I mention his BOYFRIEND SWEATER???

The Untamed - I spent soooo much time in this fandom and I have a lot of feelings about a lot of the characters but most of all Lan Wangji. He's just so... everything. I related to him so much—to being misunderstood, to loving too hard and too impotently. There's a lot of tangled up feelings in him but I just love him.

What We Do in the Shadows - Guillermo de la Cruz, the badass hunter himself. His character arc from obsessed doormat to insane assassin (who is still kind of a doormat) and is now finally coming into his own... Ugh. I don't know if I want him to bag Nandor because he deserves whatever he wants or for him to finally finish growing out his spine like an amphibian and fuck off with his life because he honestly can.

Our Flag Means Death - Jim. Just Jim. They are feisty and sexy and intense and their relationship with Oluwande is so sweet. Their story meant a lot to me and to other folks I know. While a lot of us have stories that don't go so smoothly (their friends accepted them with only a few questions, their parental figure accepted them with barely a blink, and their love interest never gave a damn either way) I think it's so beautiful to see a world where coming out just... goes right. I mean, sort of. Fingers crossed for season two.

Kinnporsche - I love all of them and I want to bundle them up in little terrariums and keep them on my shelf. Porsche is my favorite though, so he would get extra yard time. In the same vein as why I like Jim's story, I love how Porsche's story was handled. He and Kinn really do have some of the best chemistry I've ever seen and Porsche just fills space so beautifully and it was great to see him begin to come into his own.

The Sandman - This one's a bit different. I liked the show well enough but I'm not sure I'd really say I'm in the fandom? I don't find myself desperately wanting more beyond just "next episode" but that could be because Kinnporsche has me by the throat. Except Lucifer Morningstar portrayed by Gwendoline Christie is just so stunning that I want her to do anything to me. This is just pure, unadulterated lust. You should see her boots. I also really want a crossover of her Lucifer with Tilda Swinton's Gabriel because they would be the best snide siblings.

(Yandere Fukuzawa feat.Ranpo as his evil sidekick)

Summary: As a former Assassin himself, the formidable Silver Wolf Yukichi Fukuzawa can see through seemingly perfect disguises. You really should not have chosen ADA to work after fleeing the Order of the Clock Tower.

Notes: I wrote this instead of polishing my Tetchou fic, someone yells at me to do things in order- You can sense clear parental issues here, so enjoy! The reader’s ability is modelled after Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, the ability to control air currents. She is a former assassin leader of the Order of Clock tower, her superior being Lady Agatha Christie. I could have wrote this as a full fic, but I got too excited about a Mori fic and just...went with easy way with this one. The next part would be out next week by the latest.

You thought your facade is good enough, that your acquaintances are none the wiser. And you are correct, at least to a certain degree. But for a fellow former Assassin, it is not that difficult to decipher from the way you carry yourself. Fukuzawa, the president of your current organization, for one.

You had paid an old friend a good sum, who happens to be a government official, to cleanse your dirty past. Nobody would find anything now, not even yourself.

To avoid any suspicions, you created this bubbly innocent girl mask for your coworkers, to gain their trust so even if the Order finds out about you they would have a hard time pursuing you. You never were particularly close to anyone, even when you let Naomi come to your shopping trips from time to time after her endless pleas. “Your western style is just so cute! I want to try it!!” Of course, you cannot say no. Guess Lady Christie was right, if you wear a mask long enough it would fuse in with your true self.

You act just like any other secretary in the ADA, polite, properly-dressed, hardworking and always ready to pick up any agent’s slack on paperwork(mainly Dazai’s). He notices how you would blend well with the background with that quiet nature, your presence barely noticeable, just like what he used to be in his assassin days. You also have a sweet voice and would look up to him with those adorable feline-like eyes while reading meeting reports to him.

No, no Yukichi, she is your employee, not a stray kitten you encountered in a park. You cannot pat her on the head or squeeze her cheeks, it would be inappropriate. He had to scold himself so very often, whenever you smile to greet him at his desk or wish him a good evening when you leave work. Maybe that is why he hired you, a foreigner with little work experience in Japan.

Since you are only a clerk, Fukuzawa assumed you did not possess a special ability, therefore he did not bother to check your background thoroughly. However, there is something that distinguishes you from the norms like Kirako Haruno or Naomi Tanizaki. Your quick reflexes are unusual for a civilian. His suspicions were confirmed thanks to Ranpo.

When Ranpo accidentally pushed one of his donuts off the table, you snatched a napkin, crouched down and caught the pastry with one hand. All done within half a second, without dropping a single sheet of the files on your other hand. Even Ranpo was impressed and gave you a few words of praise. You responded with a sheepish smile, but that smile does not look so harmless to Fukuzawa anymore. That is when Fukuzawa took a particular interest in you, who are you really? Those moves would take years of training to mould into one’s instincts.

You have hidden pockets in that skirt? He could just be paranoid, but that size is enough to fit a mini-gun or a dagger. In fact, you do carry these things around, old habits die hard. Decades of Assassin life had made you insecure without a weapon to hold. But young women often carry self-defence mechanisms right? Surely you would need them since you are just so cute. Is he just overthinking things?

Using his connections, the ADA president got a copy of your records from the Government Database. But they are nothing out of the ordinary, almost too normal. Maybe you are just blessed with natural talents, not some government spy. Because that could mean big problems, as Fukuzawa hates the government to stick their noses into his Agency.

“(Y/n)-san? She is a nice girl. She is always willing to help out everyone with their troubles. Hah, one time she even went to drag Dazai out from a ditch!”

“When the powers are out, (y/n)-chan brought lots and lots of candles for us. I cannot be more grateful.”

“She loves sweets and would often bake me some! (y/n)-chan calls me her test subject for her confectionery arts, not that I mind as long as I get half of her chocolate cookies!”

Only words of praise and gratitude, Fukuzawa cannot seem to find a single bit of negativity related to you? You are so friendly towards everyone, no one ever saw you in a different mood other than cheerfully happy.

The more Fukuzawa learns about you, the more invested he becomes. Even though it started as an investigation, he had grown fond of you rather quickly. Soon enough he finds himself smiling back to your greetings and goodbyes, even sneaking gazes full of fondness when you were not noticing.

Hm, so the agency president had taken a special interest in you huh? That is better than ideal. Now you can sleep soundly at night without ten traps set up in your apartment. People usually protect what they love right? Now you got the powerful Silver Wolf, an elite swordsman as your bodyguard!

These little actions did not get past the observations of Ranpo Edogawa. You are pleasant to have around, and if you marry the president would mean you would never leave the ADA right? He can have those delicious sweets for the rest of his days! His sensei is happy, and he got an endless supply of delicious food, sounds like a win-win to him.

So when Fukuzawa asked him to use his Ultra Deduction on you, little Ranpo did not suspect a thing and gladly obliged.

“(y/n)-chaan is a skilled assassin, with at least ten years of experience...And served in the Order of the Clock Tower as one of their finest knights, but she is currently on exile.” Ranpo and Fukuzawa exchange a glance, mixed with shock and horror. Both stayed silent for a while, digesting the unbelievable truth Ranpo just dug up.

So, his hunch was correct. But how can you, a charming lady who would help the elderly to cross the street, would give up your seat on the train to pregnant women, would help out anyone in need used to be a cold-blooded assassin? (These are all classic kindness gestures in Asia, in case anyone is confused)

Can Fukuzawa imagine you in black tights(eh idk how this came up), ending people’s lives while lurking in the shadows? No, it is physically impossible. He lived that kind of life, how can you turn out to appear so innocent? Unless you hid your evils exceptionally well. This sends a chill down his spine, the thought of someone who can fool the entire Agency of intelligent agents…

You may not harbour any ill-will towards them yet, but you still pose a major potential risk regardless. You can feed the agents poisonous cakes and even Kunikida would eat them without question. Some precautions need to be taken.

“Sensei, you like (y/n)-chan, right? Why not take her in and watch her every move, make sure she is no threat?” Another win-win situation, if you ask Ranpo. You would have all the time in the world to bake! Wouldn't that be amazing?

His smart apprentice never disappoints.

Young Adult:

Shadow glass by Rin Chupeco

I liked the first two books a lot! Unfortunately I think it didn’t really stick the landing in the last one? But the first two are fun, I enjoyed the worldbuilding particularly. And it’s told through a framing device where the protagonist is relaying the story several years in the future, where the circumstances are *completely* different and it’s cool to try to figure out how things are going to turn out the way they are. And like trying to predict how the protagonist is going to inevitably spiral and what is the cause of her falling out with the majority of the people in her life.

The Diabolic by S J Kincaid

This is probably my favorite YA book series? Ever? It’s kind of like… Hamlet in Space if Ophelia was a super soldier bodyguard pretending to be the *real* Ophelia. It’s incredibly YA, it’s incredibly soapy, and an absolute roller coaster. It’s also hard for me not to point out failings in the things I like, and I do think this series makes some… choices, but I do generally love it for how wild it is.

Also the last book came out at some point last year and while I read it on release I’m still percolating on how I feel about it lmao. So I’m still undecided there.

Adult:

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

Her writing style >>>>>>

I adore the imagery in all of her stories and the atmosphere. I’m incredibly picky about fairytale retelling and I’m generally pretty damn bored with them at this point, but this collection is just so good.

The titular story is a Bluebeard retelling and it’s just so evocative and brutal! Idk I love it. Erlking and Lady of the House of Love were notable faves.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

This is such an ambitious, odd little space opera! The story follows a colony ship, housing the last of humanity, on a desperate journey to find a safe planet to settle down in.

Meanwhile the chapters alternate by showing us the gradual development and evolution of a society of telepathic matriarchal spiders? Idk it’s impossible to succinctly describe everything this book deals with but it’s very compelling! I felt like the ending was… mildly a cop out? But it’s a very cool book

The Poppy War by RF Kuang

I went into the first book somehow under the impression that it was YA because of the initial academy setting and then it really. really. was not lmao. It lifts heavily from Chinese history, and while it’s not a 1:1 it’s really interesting how it engages with real events. The second book is probably my favorite. Bring me all the naval warfare lol.

But yeah it’s an absolutely gutting series. And like the protagonist commits actual legit genocide. The trigger warnings list is… very very long. So maybe check that out before getting into it.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson

I’ve yet to finish this series but I looove the worldbuilding and the protagonist is fucking stone cold omg.

I’ve heard this book described as econipunk? It’s everything I love about court intrigue and getting into the real nitty gritty of how government *works.* Basically the protagonist tries to rise up the ranks within an evil empire that colonized her home country. And she’s just a fantastic Machiavellian type. I love her so much.

Misc:

Anyway I ran out of bandwidth to go over everything else in detail rip but I also love most of Haruki Murakami’s work! NK Jemisin has the coolest ideas, and Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, while def her most uneven work, as a debut, also left a huge impression on me. The Broken Empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence is also extremely grimdark with a villain protagonist but I enjoyed it a lot! Another one where I suggest checking out TWs first. Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo is REALLY GOOD it’s also a fairly short novella and I’ve yet to read the sequels. The world buildinggggg. The authors other books also look promising.

I’m also a huge fan of the Vampire Chronicles though…I wouldn’t call them necessarily well written.

Honorable mention to SJM’s first Crescent City book, not because it was necessarily groundbreaking but I was so astonished to actually like it. I haven’t read the sequel yet so idk if that’s going to ruin it for me.

Also to rattle off some classics: the Philip Marlowe series by Raymond Chandler, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Dracula by Bram Stoker (surprising no one). My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier.

Actually i don't get Reki at all. Like even in the first ep he was worse even than Shadow and i'm not talking abt Cherry, Joe and Adam. And he was ok and loved skating. But like... if your friend is better than you, then you get depressed and making your friend feel guilty abt you not being good enough? I didn't even ship Reki and Langa, they are just giving me only friendship vibes, but i'm still sad, wtf writers did with his character?

Yeah, same. Like, sorry, I just don’t think Reki’s character can be redeemed for me personaly at this point.

Like what should I even stand for in his character? I do not respect his life position at all. Like I dislike Makoto for being a shadow and not wanting anything in his life, but hey, at least he’s genuinely happy for Haru’s success. I adore Rin who never gave up and dove into the hardest challenge possible from the start to get on Haru’s level, cause he wanted to swim with him for the rest of his life and he got there. And then there’s this.. it’s like.. he loves to skate, but apparently not enough, cause his doesn’t want it, if he isn’t the best at it, so he’d rather... not skate at all? He wants to be as cool and on the same level with “naturally talented ones” and wants to compete with Langa, but he doesn’t want to do anything for it or search for his own unique style or smth to beat them in another way? And on top of that he’s also sad about seeing Langa succeeding? The whole thing is... like.. no, thank you?

Like are they really gonna go with the “you made me want to be great at this like you, but if only you are great at this, than screw both you and this?” lolz. Even if they will go with the psychological block bc of his friend’s injury, it’s gonna be lousy af now. It’s like is there even a route left which could make him look...ahem... presentable at this point? Idk.

I also was right about the fact that he’s the type who prolongs the whining instead of doing things, unlike some other characters who were in his position too; realistic maybe he is, but I don’t want it, honestly, like I see such things every day and I do not like it.

From what I’ve seen in the tag some are already trying to apply here like 50 mental disorders to excuse him and stuff like “it’s realistic” and at this point I’m honestly used to people on the internet using mental disorders not for spreading awareness, but bc they’re thinking it’s “trendy”, which is a cringe galore and shame on you. But it still makes me kinda sad all the time. Also there’s nothing unrealistic about not giving up and getting where you want, it’s just harder for, to say, “ordinary” people, that’s why most rarely choose this option (although it’s for you to decide if you’re ordinary or not, cause everyone can be extraordinary, you just need to find it in you). Anyways, drowning in a self pity is not the trait I’ve ever found appealing in people, along with the constant comparing yourself to others.

Sadly many prefer to use these excuses to get out of everything along with being lazy or jealous, esp the young generation. At this point, it’s like the same thing as with this other fandom. Like, sometimes when someone is trying to hit someone because he saw that he’s more talented than him, that just means that he’s an asshole, there’s no need to come up with ridiculous excuses to justify this and try to make him a hero. And sometimes ppl are just jealous, as simple as that. And no, not everyone is like that. At this point ppl on social media are like... fuck your hard-working characters, who are inspired by talent and do not give up on trying to prove yourself even if the whole world is against them. Let’s promote being emo and how it’s okay to spend your life on walking around telling everyone how you’re a useless trash, like this will help you in life.

Also if seeing someone succeed, esp your best friend, makes you sad, might want to reconsider the way of living your life. Just saying.

Also since when you have to be the best just to enjoy doing what you love doing? I’m like... personaly I do not get it. Looking at my vids 10 years ago they look like utter trash, but I tried and tried and yeah, I might not reach some levels of mega talented ppl, but hey, I’m still trying and searching for stuff I can improve all the time and watch talented ppl tutorials like “holy fuck, you can do that?”.

But hey, at least he doesn’t want to only make boards, he wants to compete... (or does he? I’m honestly not sure at this point lol)... I mean, there’s... that. but I thought, when he’s gonna realize it, he’s gonna be back on track, but n.o. xD back to self pity. ok then. Some go like “its only been 3 episodes” and I’m like “this... ain’t a 24 episodes anime tho..(?)”.

So far I’m just confused about what are writers intentions with some characters are. Like the most interesting ones at least for me are technically a background for some reason idk. I was literally sad about the wasted amount of screentime on Reki being.. well, nothing new.

Sad part about this is that people like this also need a constant reassuring to the point of them just sucking your life out of you, too, so I honestly do not know how to deal with this life position. Ppl like this have a tendency to never be happy, so Langa would just have to run after him and feed him with compliments for the rest of his life to water his tiny self-esteem or say smth “don’t give up, don’t give up, fighting”? It’s like... well, ok. Friendship, yeah, but ship? Nah, not for me. Also I do not smell any huge romance there tbh, and from Reki’s side this is all just a mess tbh.

The saddest part was that he saw that Langa won after his yelling and he didn’t care for that. Like Rin was mopping bc he wanted to swim with Haru, so when he saw that Haru wanted to swim with him, too, that was it for him. And that’s the problem all the viewers who watched Free! got hit with while watching this. My DMs are literally all about “why do I not feel anything about them?” or “sometimes cute, but smth doesn’t hit me shipping wise”. Cause I think most expected for some reason that he would also put Langa first, but at the end, they’re not on the same track, bc their priorities are different.

I actually think it was just mistake for all of our Free! hommies including me to go at it from the wrong point of view and from the beginning expecting it shipping wise to be like that one other Utsumi’s work. I mean, she’s just a director there, not also on the storyboard or anything else. Should’ve gone watching it with a clear head. The main ship just does not hit any spots for me either. And my heart does not lie there at all. I do blame Free! for this, cause it’s like impossible to compare bc of those our scenes, I keep seeing, but at the same time, they do not hold up not to the dynamic, not to anything at this point. Like I do not know where they’re going with them, but this is just not my type of a ship in general and definitely not the one I can go crazy about. I honestly do not think 3 episodes can change that. Also, unrelated to the question, but did Adam seriously just went and hit Cherry with a board in the face?!!!! (THE FUCK DUDE?) Like, this was definitely not how I thought this was gonna go. I also kinda felt like Cherry was in love with Adam in the past. All in all this was like a... strange episode, at this point I just feel sorry for my baby Langa, Joe and Cherry were very cute (esp at the end) and my god Cherry is hot, but like I also want something complex pls, so idk I’m still waiting for the Adam/Tadashi shananigans.

At this point I’m like “I love watching this, but what am I watching?” haha supernatural skating soup opera it is then.

Second, could you elaborate on the "analysing as YA" vs "analysing as an adult" approach? I assumed that "discourse people" on this website generally don't go beyond "antagonist is bad because they are against the hero!" out of ignorance/lack of interest except to score Internet Fame Points, not that it was due a specific mindest. I also don't really read YA (except Tiffany Aching)

THAT SAID, well your discourse people point is pretty much part of it but since I’m here and I can rant have the entire thing I was too tired to hash yesterday ;) so, in order:

first thing, we need to establish that ya books and **adult** books generally have different target audiences which is fine and good because obviously if you want to write a thing you’ll do that for An Audience That You Have In Mind; this doesn’t mean that adults can’t read ya or that teenagers can’t read **adult books** because everyone can read what they want (and personally for one I never cared for ya in my entire life not even when I was the target audience), but it simply means that some books are meant to be liked by one category first and eventual others later and they need to be talked about in that specific context first and everything else later - then there might be books that are aimed for kids/young readers or sold like that or that can be read on more than one level which can be appreciated for different things later in time (for example I read huck finn at sixteen and I absolutely loved it but it was a book that here is seen as good reading material also for eight year olds, and at eight I wouldn’t have liked it for the reasons I did at sixteen, and if I read it now I would still like it, while a bunch of the books for kids I read when I was seven is stuff I enjoyed then but forgot now and probably was good for that age but didn’t stick with me);

second thing, that means that when I discuss a young adult book aimed at teenagers I will never hold it to the standards I would hold a book aimed at a general adult audience, especially if it’s the kind of ya like dunno as stated the vampire diaries aimed at teenage girls which is obviously the kind where you have the fantasy world with the hot dark guy who swoons the high schooler protagonist off her feet etc because that stuff is basic teenage girl fantasy 101 and like... I’ll expect a bunch of romance tropes, the usual push and pull, the guy eventually being into her, the protagonist being someone a fourteen year-old can see herself in, probably a few sexual elements thrown here and there and so on, because that’s the shit marketed at fourteen year-olds who want to read that and like... it’s really not that deep. I can’t ask the vampire diaries to be moby dick because it’s not meant to be. or, if I read percy j/ackson - which is another thing I have zero interest in but I know about because I see tweets from the author - I expect to have a bunch of teens coming into their own coming from different backgrounds because the author wants to represent properly a lot of categories so most of his readers can have someone they can see themselves in and like if a thirteen year-old who suspects being lgbt or whatever sees themselves in the gay kid from per/cy jackson guess what that’s what that book is for, so I won’t judge it on like... being a faithful representation of greek myths or how good the style is or whatever, because even if to me it’s not top notch writing or has a plot idc about it has to be for teenagers and pre-teens, not for me, a thirty year old who again didn’t even like pre-teen aimed literature when she was a pre-teen;

third, I can extra clarify it using the damned hp discourse, as in: when I say I’m tired of people not reading anything else or reading everything like hp, it means that they read it when they were growing up/were teens and it was aimed at them which is fine, but then twenty fucking years later when the people in question are way beyond their twenties (guys I’m almost 32 and I remember when the first one came out come on) when talking about any single piece of media in existence (movies, comics, other books) use hp characters/situations as the terms of paragon - like guys I had to read sn/ape comparisons with theon and ky/lo ren on the basis that THEY’RE GREY CHARACTERS as if sn/ape is the only grey character that ever existed, people keep on talking about vold/emort as the only bad guy that ever existed and so on, and like... you can’t talk about, idk, asoiaf or any book aimed at an adult audience like you’d talk about hp, because at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if I read comparisons between sn/ape and ivan karamazov and I think I don’t need to specify how completely nonsensical that would be;

now, with all of this explained, what I mean is: ya in general - which is not a fault per se of the genre since it’s aimed at teens and pre-teens - tends to have... very fixed narrative schemes depending on which teens it’s addressing - like, stuff like tvd or twilight is obviously the romance teenage girl fantasy where you have the girl fighting to be with the dark beautiful supernatural creature in question, per/cy jackson is more like I’ll give you a bunch of relatable characters having cool adventures against bad guys with the occasional redemption so we can see that people are redeemable but you still have right vs wrong, hp is sort of like that in the sense you get relatable-ish protagonist with relatable friends growing up throughout the entire thing and fighting on the good side vs the evil side including the usual death of the mentor plus people who seemed bad actually not being bad™ except that PJ has more povs and better rep from what I gather but that’s not the point so it’s basically the growing up journey for the young protagonist(s) the kid sees themselves in, then there’s stuff like hunger games where you actually have the dystopian worldbuilding just written to be enjoyable by younger people who don’t want to get too depressed (and ngl I haven’t read the books but I’ve seen the first two movies and guys the way everyone ignores the classist commentary in thg to discuss the love triangle is... a staple of the problem tbh) but still try to introduce deeper themes and have more nuanced characters and at the same time are still written to be enjoyed maybe by the more adult side of the target, and at the same time I can’t say that thg is the same as 1984 when it comes to target audience because 1984 doesn’t make the ugly dystopian themes more accessible using the love story/teenage protagonist etc;

at this point the problem is: if you only ever read ya and nothing else in your life (which is what a lot of people here do - guys again when I got here in 2011 if people didn’t discuss hp they discussed john gr/een, the only *adult*-aimed book I see discussed on tumblr is asoiaf... because of got X°DDD) then you end up seeing every other piece of literature expecting what you do out of a young adult and then you expect adult literature out of young adults/ya to approach certain implications the way an adult novel would, which is... frankly ridiculous;

specific examples: I see blogs which are principally about like ya fantasy books ie acotar or shadow/hunters or whatever shitting on grrm because AAAAH HE’S PROBLEMATIC/MISOGYNIST/HE HAS VIOLENCE AND RAPE IN THE BOOKS BLAH BLAH and like... spoilers: if I wrote a fantasy series aimed at fourteen year-olds who want their fantasy romance with the hot dark guy who is maybe a tiny bit problematic but turns their leaf for them I would hold back on blood and violence, if I wrote a fantasy for adults where I want to be realistic about misogyny I will not, and the fact that grrm gets judged on what happens and not how he writes it (and again, saying that a guy who has 1/3rd of his pov characters female except that it’s actually 50/50 because there are no throwaway povs except for mel while guys have a lot more of them and all the female povs have narrative weight [and mel has it before she gets one] and all of them have a different personality and he also has the same trope [brienne and arya] in two people with wildly different personalities and needs which is basically a goddamned miracle is a misogynist because there’s misogyny in his fantasy world is ridiculous imvho) which is.... exactly expecting of asoiaf what you’d expect out of acotar, when grrm and acotar’s writer write for wildly different audiences. now, if I had read acotar at 15 and asoiaf at 15 I’d have had no doubt re asoiaf being more my thing because again the subgenre acotar goes for is not my thing because I never related to that fantasy while brienne is my rep, but in general a 14yo girl who likes the acotar-like stuff will not care for grrm.... which is normal because grrm writes for adults of both genders, not teenage girls (I mean teenage boys also have their own subgenres for which the same rules are valid), and someone who likes percy jackson (aimed at both genders but like... pre-teens early teens) who doesn’t gaf for grrm won’t because it’s not aimed at them unless they like grrm for other reasons ie idk they realize that they relate to jon snow idk but you see my point, so like tldr that’s what I mean with if you only read ya you’ll expect adult writers to handle their themes like ya writers would and like... sorry but if I write stuff for adults I won’t feel the need to specify that the bad guy is B A D with neon lights because an adult should grasp that from the narrative, I don’t need to make sure it’s obvious bc it’s aimed at kids;

reverse: when I see people saying ‘the vampire diaries is problematic because it’s about people who are a hundred years old preying on teenage girls so we need to stop teenage girls from reading that kind of thing because it makes them think it’s okay to go with someone that much older than them’, we’re at the opposite problem in the sense that you’re asking a young adult novel what you would ask of AN ADULT NOVEL when there’s no point in it. like, a teenage girl knows perfectly that damon salvatore doesn’t exist and vampires don’t exist and werewolves don’t exist - the entire point of tvd is that she gets to fawn over the hot supernatural dude who changes for the better thanks to the female protagonist she most likely sees herself in and she gets to have a few nice fantasies about that which is like... normal for people who are developing their sexualities, most people wouldn’t actually want damon salvatore the way he’s exactly in canon irl because they know it’s a fantasy and so it should stay. like, sorry but as someone who watched the show because ian somerhalder is hot in her twenties and tried the first book and gave it up at page 30 because I couldn’t do it, I can 100% assure anyone that the biggest issues with tvd books are that the writing is really fucking bad (for my standards at least), with the tvd show that from S4 the writing spiraled downwards and no one wanted the magical vampire pregnancy witch twins ridiculousness, but none of the content actually was shit that anyone would take seriously like that and I wouldn’t expect tvd to approach that subject realistically. if I read a vampire book aimed at adults who actually wants to write such a relationship as creepy WELL YES OF COURSE I’D EXPECT IT TO BE OBVIOUS ABOUT IT BEING CREEPY, but if it’s aimed at freaking teenagers... it’s a fantasy and not really that deep, take it for what it is and let teenage girls enjoy thinking about smooching damon salvatore (or stefan or whoever) without assuming they need to be protected from Horrible Vampire Fiction™, same as no one goes bitching about unrealistic sex scenes in serialized romance books because people read them because they’re unrealistic and escapism, not because they expect nobel prize worthy exploration of themes from them;

now, ^^^^^^ would not happen if people actually read variedly and studied some decent lit analysis in school - but like, after I had to read I think at some point that of mice and men is ableist... THAT’S the damned point - with ya you can take a lot of the plot at face value, with adult lit you can’t and you have to see motivation beyond the action of the characters and you can’t do that if you only read books aimed at pre-teens/teenagers where obviously that’s... more spelled out than it would be in a book aimed at an adult audience;

that by the way also means wildly missing actual adult themes discussion in ya, because again, I haven’t read thg but from the two movies I’ve seen it’s fucking obvious that the whole thing is an anti us-classism commentary from how the districts are built to how the games are rigged to pretty much everything in the worldbuilding, but all the discourse I see on tumblr is about either the love triangle or katniss being miscast or president snow being a jerk and whatever else, but I never once saw anyone saying ‘heeeeey the people in katniss’ district are an in your face metaphor of poor people in the us of a belonging to certain categories while the first few districts are absolutely the 1% and the entire point of it is that she wants to tell you A CLASSIST SOCIETY IS BAD AND WILL LEAD TO REVOLUTIONS’, which to me was... like, glaring, it was literally what 90% of the entire thing was about and no one ever discusses it in a fandom-wide sense (I mean... I saw a bunch of hg posts back when the movies came out, I never saw this brought out), which... is a problem because it means that the moment people are put in front of a ya product that actually tackles that kind of issue.... they go and worry about the love triangle (which seemed to me the excuse to draw the people in the story) not about the social commentary, and like, maybe a twelve year-old won’t catch on the social commentary, a twenty-year old especially from the us should, and I don’t see that happening;

and sorry but that is because if you only engage with content aimed at a younger audience than your target first you assume that every piece of literature should be consumable/readable/enjoyable by a younger audience (and sorry but no, some of us don’t want to write stuff making sure teenagers like it) and then ask of actual ya media to cater to their *adult* needs and not to the needs of the target audience because wow obviously if you’re 25 you won’t want out of literature what you wanted at fourteen;

and this also is valid for children’s media because again, I’m cutting it short, but adults watching st/even universe and sending people death threats because they don’t agree with their opinion of a cartoon aimed at an audience that’s at moooostttt eight years old is a thing that shouldn’t even fucking exist, and if you think steven/universe is that important at an adult age you need to re-assess your priorities;

tldr: adults should not expect media aimed at kids/teens to cater to their interests and shouldn’t analyze it the way they’d analyze a piece of media aimed at an adult audience and should not presume that every piece of media should have the scope/schemes of medias aimed at kids/teens because some of us don’t want to read that.

now, I’ll leave you with a nice short anecdote which hopefully will further clarify what I mean and add to another point which would be, kids and teens don’t give a fuck about what you, an adult, do: when everyone was in a frenzy about my little pony back in 2013 or so I had to see a ton of posts like ‘AAAAAH MEN/BOYS WHO ARE INTO MLP ARE STEALING THE SHOW FROM YOUNG GIRLS HOW DARE THEY ENJOY IT WE NEED TO KICK THEM OUT’ with added people saying that a ten year old male kid who tried to kill himself bc his friends bullied him bc he liked mlp deserved it and the likes, my only thought was that... when I was 8-10 in elementary school and was actually the target for cartoons and stuff, sailor moon was the rage between all girls my age me included, we’d spend recess playing pretend (and I’d get stuck playing sailor mars bc no one wanted her, sad) and our hugest first world problem in existence was that we needed technically a mamoru and of course no self-respecting boy in elementary school would have admitted under death threats to watching sailor moon because it was a girls’ thing (aaaaah gender roles in the early-mid 90s, how fun) so everyone despaired because ofc no one wanted to play mamoru... and the few times any guy actually showed up like HEEEEY I WANNA DO IT BUT PLEASE DON’T TELL MY FRIENDS I LIKE SAILOR MOON we’d all be like OMG YOU’RE OUR NEW FAVORITE PERSON PLEASE YOUR SECRET IS SAFE because we couldn’t believe we found the magical boy™ who wanted to do it, and if anyone had told us that the kid in question was stealing sailor moon from us we’d have laughed in their face.

kids don’t ask of media what you, an adult do, and it’s unfair of you, an adult, to ask children’s/ya media to cater to your damned interests, which are amply catered to by the tons of adult literature around which also forces you to push on your views and read more challenging things and to not read/watch stuff at face value, which is why I would really appreciate it if the amount of 20yo people on here who I consider adults engaged with more adult media and let themselves be challenged instead of just going back to ya/kids’ things, which are good for teens and kids and can be enjoyed by everyone but should not be the only goddamned genre you measure all other literature against because then you get people saying that lolita is pro-pedo when it’s exactly the goddamned contrary, but if you think that pov character = protagonist = good guy (which is... staple kids/ya stuff for obvious reasons) then you decide that humbert humbert is someone you’re supposed to root for. too bad that you’re not and the author was an actual csa victim so it’s a completely ridiculous reading that wouldn’t happen if you didn’t read lolita the way you read hp.
