They did a fucking excellent job making Sokka unlikable and annoying these first couple episodes and then slowly having him unlearn those traits (projecting cockiness to mask his extreme insecurity causing him to be overcontrolling, dismissive, and just generally kind of a jerk), but ALSO showing off the bat he isn't just a douchebag and actually cares about Katara (immediately being down to take her and rescue Aang). Anyone who says his arc ended at unlearning sexism/that that was the whole point of his character is a fool. This boy has so much wrong with him 🥰🥰

don't you just love it when a series has a good ending that takes care of all of its characters, shows how their futures will look like, ties up all loose ends, reminisces about old times, references important moments from before, and brings back elements of the very first episode, giving a nice frame to the whole series?

I feel like The Phantom of the Opera can be a metaphor for how society shames women for their sexual desires. Women must aim to be chaste. The Phantom represents Christine's sexual awakening, while Raoul represents her innocence.

Christine and Raoul met as kids; he is the light, "the good guy", chastity, etc. He is everything to be loved in the open air, in the light for all to see and approve of. Meanwhile Erik is darkness, "the bad guy"; he is the passion kept in the night and out of sight. He lurks in the darkness and is everything to be feared, but also everything to be loved with great passion. The kind of passion that is often shamed when it is women who pursue it.

Ultimately Christine chooses the light (what she is expected to choose), over the darkness (the passions and desires a woman is often shamed for).

I always hold the interpretation that the one Christine truly loved was Erik; she only chose Raoul because she was pressured into making a choice, and, well, see my points above.

Plus Erik became all homicidal, oops. But I know she did love him.

TIME TO READ INTO IT WHOOOOO:

when they missed his birthday, he was like. "eh. it's fine. i'm thirty now, i don't need my friends to throw me a party. i'm an adult, i'm not upset about it."

especially because i'm sure reid didn't have a lot of awesome birthdays pre-series. i always got the impression he was mostly friendless until he joined the team, with ethan as the only exception (and in my heart they met and became friends in college, despite canon suggesting it was as young children). diana loved him and i'm sure she would have been lovely on his birthday, but i doubt she always remembered it (in the flashback to william leaving in 2x15 she doesn't know what day it is—i think it's very plausible that could happen on at least some of his birthdays) and if she did, she might not have been in the right headspace to celebrate it like she wanted.

(and even if she remembered and she was doing well, i really struggle to see any version of diana and spencer post-william leaving who wouldn't have had serious financial issues)

and then after spencer moves diana into assisted living (possibly on his birthday or at least close to it) he's mostly alone until he meets gideon. (again, except for ethan)

so, in summary: pre-bau spencer's birthdays were probably infrequently celebrated, and when they were celebrated, they were probably a lot less of a Big Deal than other peoples' were, for various reasons. so spencer spends about a decade growing used to not celebrating his birthday, then joins the bau and spends about a decade getting used to celebrating it, and then...they forget. not only do they forget, they forget the big three-oh.

so he tells himself not only that he's too old now to care about his birthday, but he spent so long not celebrating it anyway, and he's fine. it's fine.

and then emily finds out. and it's not fine. and he is upset about it.

And another thing we're losing with these 6 episode seasons, other than the filler episodes and my beloved Halloween specials (I'm on a PLL rewatch and I need Halloween Specials to come back to my screen I think that would fix everything in my life actually) but I was recently thinking about all my favourite ships and realized we haven't had a good slow burn in years. Like we're losing the seasons long will they won't they slow burn ships. And yeah the on and offs sometimes got annoying ngl. But the actualy slowburns, like Jake and Amy, Monica and Chandler, Emily and Alison (yeah they were obsessed with each other from pretty early on but them actually getting together is one of the best slowburns in sapphic tv imo). We're losing drawn out relationships where we get to know the characters through their partners' eyes and get to fall in love with them over the years and get to know their quirks and their annoying habits and love them anyway. Now the most we get is a movie style montage.
