It’s April. 

Easter.

Long weekends.

You came up last long weekend, saying that you come up every long weekend.  So why would Easter be different?

My brother told me we were going camping again. The same group of stupid boys as last time. The 5 of us, the immortals.

I was excited, to see you again, excited that the darkness might bring more, just as it did last time.

4 days is a long time. 4 Boys. 4 days. No parents. And in 4 days, nothing happened.

Granted, my idiot brother made you mad, you were both mad at each other, i forced to make sure it wouldn't end in another fist fight. 

He looks up to you. Takes everything you say as gospel. He thinks your wise, but doesn’t like your spontaneity. It's a part of his brain. I don’t think you know about the asperges. I won’t spill the news.

How can you be mad at that? 

It's a lot of other factors too, I guess. 

We flirt, it's what you and I do best. You can take my sassiness, you encourage it and you throw it back to me. We wink, religiously. 

God, I can't even remember your face right now.

You swear like a sailor and I do too. You look at me. I look at you. I quickly memorised the pale blue of your eyes. 

You were being cheeky, and I was being cheeky, and it lead to me sitting on your ass while you clutched my pillow in a deathly grip. But that's another story. (He got so mad at us, he saw me there, on top of you. But he didn't see your hand)

You were mad and sad and happy and you remind me of a monkey. Energised. Bubbly.  Yet, Independent.

We walked along the jetty on the last night. You gave me your jacket again. The same one as last time. It smelt the same.  It came down to my mid thigh and the sleeves were so long. You walked fast. I don't know what you were doing, but it felt like you were trying to get away. I don’t know. I don’t know.

I tried to catch up at first. Then I slowed. Told you that you were going to be lonely. Then I stopped chasing altogether. 

We didn’t have a moment alone. Not one. And I'm not mad, I'm sure it wasn't intentional. But I wonder what would have happened if J wasn't there to argue with. If you two weren’t making snide comments to me about the other.

You don’t want to invite him on the next one. I understand that. But does that mean you won't invite me? You’re going back to work, 3 hours away, for a few months. Said you're getting away from everything. Baby can’t escape his thoughts, baby can’t escape his dad.

Months away from him. I hate that you get mad at him. I hate that you don’t like his trust in you. I hate that you wouldn’t give me the attention I craved.

I hate that you're leaving again and there's nothing I can do or say, I can't ask you what you think or how you feel, I can't see you. 

Because you're 19, you're 3 hours away, you're ‘off limits’ (but we are both the rule breakers, aren't we), and you're a boy who doesn’t know what he wants (or how to communicate it)

I tried to give you the cake you loved when we got home so you could take it with you on the 3-hour journey back to your work. 

You refused.

That hurt.

A lot.

You said you’d be gone for a few months. A break. 

You're not doing anything this weekend. I already asked you.

But it’s your last day of work. And you're not coming home.
