some game design thinky thoughts.
#it speaks#da gameplay complaints so weird to me. which i say as someone whose favorite combat was origins.#i mean 1 like i just enjoy a lot of different types of games. including crpg style tactical and including action#and inclulding me style arpg#but fr like people just keep saying over and over 'only three abilities???????????' like bro did u know in dai#that one of the warrior abilities was COMBAT ROLL.#a lot of things like that were previously abiliities and can in real time combat become different kinds of mechanics#and lemme say as someone who never invests in combat roll i spend a lot of time in dai fighting dragons by fruitlessly jumping in the hope#that THIS time i might be able to dodge the incoming attack i can clearly see coming (i can't)#idk like the point is obv if you don't like action-oriented combat whatever but complaining about design changes which actually serve#to make GOOD action-oriented combat is wild to me.#love that it's still rtwp my beloved. love giving commands to followers. love that it's built around synergies and that the wheel actually#tells you things like detonation combos and enemy resistances because i love taking advantage of stuff like that but find often in games#that information is overly obscured or a hassle to discover#and if i in real time action combat had 20 different abilities to choose from while still needing to dodge out of the way and pop off#an attack- that would be at worst overwhelming and distracting and at best feel like more than i need.#and at the same time! the skill tree looks great. best i've seen from da (and iterated from other franchises well imo) and still looks#plenty deep and customizable. way more than me's five little blocks or whatever#and wrt to party control yeah i'll miss it i like it a lot!#but again for this style of combat i literally don't think you need it and that's okay!#the game feeling better for what it is is okay!#even in dai like i have a lot of moments in that game where it's actually more a nuisance than anything else to fully switch control#to use an ability. e.g. i usually spec solas out with spirit magic and i almost always will fully enter the tactical cam just to#tell him to cast a barrier. or a revive. or dispel some demons before they spawn in#like i'm literally already just telling him to use abilities and then i switch back to me. and in that game there are def times where i hav#thought yeah this would actually be smoother if i could just tell him to use it +position it!#i spend the most time party switching in origins esp on higher difficulties but obv the game is most fine tuned for that#and you can play through the entire series as if it were an arpg if you want. that's what i did when i was a kid lmfao#well anyways. that's my two cents! i think it'll be really engaging! from what i've seen the game director isn't talking out of her ass!#vir dirthera

you had such a good ask that i'm stealing it to send back to you haha:
random oc question: How did you come up with gwen? Are there any inspirations from other characters/people? Is there any part of your own personality that you imbue in them? And also, how did you come up with the name?
૮꒰ྀི∩´ ᵕ `∩꒱ྀིა
YES I SENT THAT ASK WITH THE INTENTION YOU'D SEND IT BACK MY PLAN WORKED HAHAHA
But anyways *cracks knuckles*
under the cut cause it got long
So Gwen was a character I created for a dnd campaign. Originally, I was going to use another character in that game but the DM kinda inimidated me a bit (in the sense of vibes) so I decided to go make a new character.
A long time ago I had seen a post that was something like if a witch made a deal with someone to have their first born and then the same person had a child with a devil and now they had a custody battle or whatever, that post was the inspiration for Gwen. I was like 'what if I make a warlock, which I've wanted to play for a long time, whose patron is their dad, inspired by that post?' and that's how Gwen came to be (i remember even checking about tiefling parents and DnD 3.5e i think had something about being the child of a human and a devil so i just showed that to the dm and she was like ok).
I don't remember using any other characters as inspiration for Gwen (consciously at least, bc some times I do catch myself comparing her a bit with jester from CR), but, a lot of her personality is a mix of my personality traits (I was attempting to lift myself up a bit by making a character that had some of my 'positive' personality traits) and things I wish I could be so like, Gwen is very talkative, she says what comes to her mind, she's sassy, she's creative, she has a sweet tooth, that's all from me, but her being a high charisma character, who will talk to anyone, her always willing to go a crazy adventure and have 0 caution, that's very like 'things I'd never do' sort of thing (especially cause I do have social anxiety and making Gwen was also a way for me to try and 'combat' that).
And this also goes into her physical appearence. Cannonicaly (bc BG3 doesn't have fat body types), Gwen is a big girl/plus size, because once again, this was me trying to make me feel better about myself and my body (reminder that gwen was conceived in 2021, so pandemic was going around, I was in my last year of high school and my mental health was in the gutter). The fact that she is pink is definetly due to the fact that I used to be a pink hater and i was like 'ok i want to stop hating pink so let me make this character that color' and it worked lol.
Finally the reason why her name is Gwendolyn Gray. So, one of my favorite cartoon shows growing up was Total Drama Island and my fav character was the goth Gwen, and for some reason, I had put in my head that the TDI gwen was short for Gwendolyn, and also because I liked Gwendoline Christie and completely forgot how to correctly spell her name and ended up with Gwendolyn. The gray came about because I wanted to give her a surname and I couldn't think of anything, then as I looked around my room, I saw my copy of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and was like "Gray... Gwendolyn Gray...it has a nice ring to it"

So About Ben 10: Alien Force
Story: Moving our heroes off the road and out of the rust bucket and into their hometown of Bellwood is a welcome change that could allow us to see different facets of our protagonists which informs the story as a whole. Having Ben and Gwen search for their now missing grandfather only for them to stumble upon a conspiracy by aliens known as the Highbreed to take over the earth was a premise rife with potential. Getting to see Ben and Gwen operate independently of Grandpa Max especially considering they're nowhere near as knowledgable about this world as him is brilliant. Incorporating Kevin to be a resource isn't bad but INCREDIBLY RUSHED. Him begrudgingly helping them on occasion would've been more sensible for the characters and the story instead of him coming to their aid consistently. How are we supposed to feel the loss of their grandpa Max while they navigate this alien world if Kevin immediately fills that void? What was the point of making Ben step into the role of leadership for his grandpa max to just come back anyway? Speaking of Grandpa Max they barely react to his alleged death throughout this series and Ben and Gwen's collective grief isn't even fully explored. The trio's personal lives are never given any real screen time and when it is it's far too late in the series. When Kevin isn't working on his car where does he sleep, is it in his garage? I'm not saying we need long drawn out answers to some of these questions but a throwaway line here and there or multiple episodes dedicated to these topics and questions would show that the writers are putting some actual forethought into this story. Another stray thought since the DNAliens are revealed to be humans that have been enslaved by the Highbreed we should've seen our heroes struggle with that either in combat or just from a moral standpoint. It should've realistically caused some conflict amongst the trio about how to proceed and how to properly restrain themselves going forward. Would've been a useful way to show other aspects of their personalities and upbringings. While the transition from the episodic nature of the original to serialized storytelling in the sequel is to be applauded the new ideas presented have promise but poor execution overall.
Characters & Combat: Ben is no longer cocky and impulsive, instead he sports a newfound maturity that can only be rivaled by someone in their 50s. This development completely guts him of any potential for character development. Another progression in his character that I just didn't care for was his over reliance on the omnitrix, since it doesn't time out as quickly as it used to it has become a crutch for him. We no longer see his creative mind at work when posed with an alien threat and 'going hero' is no longer an option. In the second episode of classic we see Ben takedown a mutant hamster with nothing but his wit athleticism and a motorized scooter. Gwen is no better she was my favorite in classic and is utterly unrecognizable to me now. Known for being a feisty sarcastic fiercely intelligent character whose interests in science history and tech made her useful not only as a foil to Ben to show her level of competence in comparison, but as an ally when providing him with advice on what transformation to take on for whatever problem they were facing at the time. Not to mention her background in martial arts helped her and Ben deal with less powerful enemies and her latent talent for magic after encountering Hex Charmcaster the charms of Bezel along with obtaining a spell book made her a more active combatant. In Alien Force her abilities as well as personality are flattened. Instead of casting spells to create mini tornadoes cause water spouts manifest mist levitate objects and project shields that deflect laser fire they make her into a great value green lantern. When it comes to combat she's weaker now than when she was a child, the power of her shields are inconsistent her energy discs don't do the same amount of damage as Ben and Kevin's attacks. On top of that they decided the origin of her power is alien via her grandmother. She's no longer a uniquely magical girl whose powers act as a vehicle to bring fantasy elements into this sci-fi story but another generic alien. In this show they just reduced her to the token girl which will never sit right with me. Kevin is back and no longer as murderous as he used to be when Ben and Gwen came across him when they were kids. Instead Kevin is now pushing alien tech as a dealer, weapons specifically. This isn't a horrible progression considering Kevin was a street rat and unhoused in classic plus his stint in the null void it actually makes some semblance of sense. What doesn't make sense is his willingness to help, he's a consistently selfish person so aiding Ben and Gwen happened too quick. They should've had Ben and Gwen coaxing him into helping with their mission either through providing him with whatever alien tech Grandpa Max had laying around or trading in information he'd find beneficial. His crush on Gwen was also completely out of left field the same goes for their romance which was as rushed as it was forced. If there was a buildup to it all.
Art & Character Design: The backgrounds and character design are now as flat and lifeless as Ben and Gwen's personalities. A majority of the episodes always take place at night leaving everything shrouded in a perpetual darkness that rivals the shadow realm of Yu-Gi-Oh. Character design is quite poor when you consider the leads can only make about two expressions leaving them unable to properly emote or show the full range of human emotion. Thankfully, this doesn't extend to Ben's aliens they're quite expressive too bad they're just poor knockoffs of the originals and when they aren't knockoffs they're just hybrids of the originals. Swampfire is just Heatblast merged with Wildvine, Big Chill is just Ghostfreak with cryokinesis. Chromastone is Diamondhead but he can absorb and redirect energy while Echo Echo is just Ditto with the addition of a sonic scream. Gone is the excitement and innovation that comes with a new transformation because they're just a half assed combo of what we've seen already. Actually, I take that back there are a few notable exceptions, Spidermonkey was a great addition with a great design and unique I'd even argue the same for Goop because he provides something different and is reminiscent of an alien species we saw in classic in the movie Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix. Most of these new transformations invalidate the originals and are too OP with no clear limits. They don't even look as alien monstrous grotesque or dynamic as you'd expect given the standard set by classic. Ben's design is fine but his fit is so generic, plain black tee paired with a green jacket that has the number ten on it and blue jeans. The simplicity of his clothes does suit his now rigid persona tho. Gwen is the worst offender sporting a white button up with a blue sweater with a black skirt stockings and short heels. It's been made apparent in classic that she loves fashion so relegating her to a school uniform seems not only out of character but completely fucking ridiculous. How did these two have more style and flair at 10 than they do at 15?

Do you think Sasuke would get along with the Elves?
They would be supicious of each other at first, with his powers and all, but after that?
I think so, but this is a *heget shrugs*. In my honesty, while Sasuke is my second favorite Uchiha, it’s a distant second to Obito, who was my Naruto blorbo even back when the current arc had just killed Asuma. I like to think that I have a decent nuanced read on Sasuke’s character. Caveats not a primary fandom, not a meta writer in it, not active for years. But version of him that sits in my head to interface with the Silmarillion is the concept of Princess Findis’s latest Romance Novel written late in the Second Age, where after decades of writing thinly veiled expies of Jane Austen, Findis returns to her sports rivalry roots and the influence of popular Númenoréan youth literature to create the Tale of Breadroll the Elf. That is to say, recreating someone similar to Naruto but on a much smaller scale and within the worldbuilding confines of Arda. Thus “Breadroll”, an orphan infant released late in the First Age with Vanyar yellow hair - but whose suppressed memories are those of his previous life as an orc. With the stigma and trauma of that standing in for the Kyuubei. And like Kishimoto’s editors, Findis is convinced to create a rival counterpart, a handsome black haired Noldo boy who must grapple with a dead family of Kinslayers and who crosses the sea against the law and advice of his friends to hunt down his brother. Findis’s original story is more mannerly romance, but the fans on both sides of the ocean take it in other directions. In Númenor the focus goes from shoujo to shonen, and the tone is a bit more OG Naruto. Vocal Valinorean fans latch onto the implied angsty romance of Breadroll’s mentor figures and that m/m pairing content dominates. (Which is my tongue-in-cheek Findis and general fandom trends - but also specifically to tie the in-universe imaginary story to the real Naruto fusion OC of Mornacu aka Avari Elf Kakashi).
Which is to say, the elves absolutely love Sasuke. They think he’s rather Túrin-esque but also a great example of what the Fëanorians could have chosen instead, someone who repents and works on forsaking a destructive path of power and revenge. Post 1st Age, he is a hopeful example that they need and crave.
Sasuke is trying to explain how ninshu is combat-triggered osanwë and figure out how if Oromë’s hounds are connected to the dog summons. He doesn't stay around long enough to have a copy of 'Breadroll' to read. But if both this anonymous-powered crossover and the proper fusion existed in the same heget universe, he would be another point of inspiration for Findis.

In Ellie's Captain Laserhawk AU, specifically in the rps with @spoocys-glade-of-dreams I've decided to create some NPC's for the resistance group she is in. Since these posts will be super long, they will be posted under the cut. Feel free to blacklist the tag potters npcs if you don't want to see these kinds of posts.
Natalie Porter
Alias: Natasha Bedford
Species: Caucasian Human. Olive Oil Skin tone with long straight black hair that have long feathered side bangs. Green eyes. Triangle body type. Her height is 5"6
Status: Alive
Current leader of the group.
Around the same age group as Ellie so mid 20's
Definitely gives off mom friend vibes just like Ellie.
When not being the leader of a rebellion group against Eden, she works as a nurse at a hospital.
Comes from a big family with multiple brothers and sisters. Natalie is the second oldest out of six siblings.
There are three brothers and three sisters. The oldest of her siblings is her brother, who is the oldest in the family.
Despite already having multiple brothers and sisters, she still considers Cody like a brother to her.
Unlike Steven, who has told his family about being a rebellion group, Natalie has not mentioned anything about this to them at all. Although her older brother does have his suspicions.
But like Steven, does visit her family on occasion.
Compassionate but firm type of leadership style in the group.
Had a small crush on the original leader of the group, but never acted on it.
Thanks to her time in medical school, she knows where pressure points are in the body which is what her type of fighting style is like. Other than that, she serves as someone who treats injuries on the mission / takes someone to safety if they are seriously injured.
Would have liked to become a doctor, but she wouldn't have had the time due to being the leader of a rebellion group. So a nurse at a hospital would have to do.
Rosemary Scott
Alias: Ellie Lexi (switched names with her)
Species: Caucasian Human. Hot pink mohawk hairstyle with dark blue eyes. Same height as Ellie so 6"0. Has a couple of ear piercings on each ear and has one piercing on the side of her nose. Wears black eyeliner / eye shadow and black lipstick. Oval body type.
Status: Deceased (Died while protecting / saving Ellie on one of their missions)
She is 35 years old
Buds heads / fights a lot with Ellie due to various things, but other than that they do respect one another and do have moments where they can get along.
I see Rosemary and Ellie's dynamic like Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon. Ellie in this case would be Sailor Moon and Rosemary would be Sailor Mars.
Tough / blunt / brutally honest kind of personality but her heart is usually in the right place.
Had a crush on her childhood friend Jesse (whose also part of the group), but never got the chance to say how she really felt because she had died. Not only that, but Jesse had a huge crush on Ellie so she knew that her feelings wouldn't be returned anyway.
Plays the electric guitar in her spare time.
Her favorite music genres are rock and heavy metal.
Grew up with her dad because her mom died when she was still a baby.
Her dad owns a hover bike shop and it was thanks to him that Ellie was able to get her own hover bike.
Skilled in knife combat (with one knife), regular combat, but her specialty is being a markswoman (someone who specializes in shooting guns)

Writer’s Spotlight | Nildespirandum
Tumblr media
This week I am spotlighting one of my favorite writers, @nildespirandum!  She is the Adam writer that made me both scared and brave enough to write Adam myself.  She is the weaver of worlds, the creator of characters so real you think they are sitting next to you.  Smart, funny, and an amazing writer!
Catch all of Nildespirandum’s stories here.
What other names do you want people to call you?
I use Misreall on AO3.
How long have you been writing fic?
I am on this current round for about four years, but I did write before though that was a decade ago.
What fandoms and/or ships do you write?
Tom Hiddleston characters, though not RPF.  Primarily Loki, but I have written for Thomas Sharpe, Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, and Conrad from Kong: Skull Island.  For all of them I have written OFCs.
How did you get started writing fic?
I had ideas for a fics for a while, but it wasn't until I started commenting and then talking to @caffiend-queen that I decided it was time to do something about it.
Story Recommendations
Which of your stories are your favorite?
I hate this question, but if I had to pick it would be the cycle of stories called Loki and Nora's Infinity Stone Playlist, both because it is my first, and because I think the relationship between the characters - not just Loki and Nora, but the cast that has build up around them - allows me to tell so many tales.
Which story are you most proud of?
Either Perfection - my Crimson Peak AU, or Reigning in Hel - A JotunLoki series.
Which of your stories do you think is the most underrated?
Probably At Hel's Edge, which is a historical mash-up of MCU Loki, with MythLoki.  The people who read it loved, it but it never found much of an audience.  Possibly because of the style I wrote it in, or maybe because the MCULoki character was a bit abstract from his origin.  But I am very, very lucky that it is getting a second life as a Webtoon drawn by @rauko-art, who is incredibly gifted and has worked so hard to make something really beautiful.
Someone is new to reading your stories, which story/stories should they read first?
For Loki, the Infinity Stone Playlist.  Otherwise, maybe Perfection.
Which story did you do the most research for?
Perfection.  I can tell you how much a yard of silk cost in 1910, both in England and the US.
Which story was the easiest to write?
Probably my Incubus Loki first series.  It was so over the top and goofy that it was effortless.  Rapacity - my vampire Loki story - is also quite easy.  There may be a trend here.
The Writing Process
What is your favorite part of writing?
To quote Dorothy Parker, "I hate writing, but I love having written."  With that said, I love the moment when I am lost in the process, and the characters are narrating and I am taking dictation.
What is your least favorite part?
Editing, which is probably why I hardly ever do it.  That said, I am fine editing other people's work.
Describe your style in 1 to 2 sentences.
Breezily conversational when it isn't breaking your heart.
Who are some of your writing idols and/or influences?
I don't have time, and you certainly wouldn't have the patience, for my full list but a few key choices are Jane Austen, Anthony Bourdain, Ian Shoales, Alexander Dumas, the Brothers Grimm, Neil Gaiman, Louisa May Alcott, Balzac, Mary Roach, Bebe Moore Campbell, Douglas Adams.  But all of that said it was probably Howard Pyle, the D'aulaires, Zilpha Keatley Snyder, Winifred Madison, and Ruth Chew whose books I read over and over to the point of them falling apart are probably the writers who made me, not only on the page, but in life.
What programs do you use to write and/or edit?
I do all of my writing and editing in Google docs.   I'm a Luddite at heart.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
A pantser.  I might have some of a story in mind when I start, but usually I start with an image and let fly.  The entirety of my Bottom of the Hourglass story came from my seeing a folded bookcase leaning against a basement door.
Do you write RPF or not?
Years ago I wrote an RPF as a gift for a friend. For the future, I never say never.
Who is your favorite character to write and why?
Loki.  Loki is the gift that keeps on giving.  While I could flippantly say that all of that emotional and mental trauma is fic writer catnip - and I wouldn't be lying - there is so much more.  He is a character of such wit and imagination, powerful, funny, wise, and a complete idiot.  The Trickster is such brilliant architype, playing both sides of the fence, fooling and being fooled, capable of great good and true evil.  He is vastly entertaining, and achingly sympathetic.  I can go on, but I will spare you.
What do you think are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, for one.  I am proud that if you read the dialogue alone from my stories you can tell who each character is, that they all have a distinct voice.
What do you struggle with?
Plot.  I get so very bored with plot.
Favorite Trope?
That's like being asked to pick a favorite anything, I can't do it.  Ok, fine, enemies to lovers.
Favorite word to use?
Delightful.  Or Really.
What is the best piece of writing advice you have heard?
Make time for your writing.  Even when you think you can't.
What would you say to a new fanfic writer starting out?
Don't be afraid, don't shrink and hide and diminish yourself, you have to be your own first, best audience.  Also, always remember, art doesn't apologize and neither should you, as long as you feel you have given the best you can at any given time - which will not always be the same, EVERYONE has off days - then be proud of having written, of having added to the world.
What is a random bit of research you have not managed to work into a fic yet?
I did so much research on boats and ship to ship combat for my pirate story that I will never use all of it.  Generally I am pretty efficient with my research, mostly because I already have a brainful of useless knowledge that I am still trying to make pay off.
What is your favorite random detail from one of your stories?
I love that in the later Infinity Stone Playlist stories Loki's various lounging robes have magical pockets that always produce cookies.
Any goals or WIPs you want to share?
I am determined to finish both The Frost Queen and The Tales of the Golden Horn this spring, and I have decided I am going to commit to the sequel to Perfection about Thomas and Alice's grandson that I have had in mind since I finished their story.
This or That
Fluff AND Angst
Smut AND Fluff
Reader or OC
One shot or Series
Canon Divergent AND AU
Coffee or Tea
Sweet or Savory
Anything else you want to say or share?
There is a tendency in fandom these days to see things that do not have a moral dimension as being good or bad, to only look at the most extreme edges of things and pass judgement on the whole.  Life is hard enough, let people enjoy things.
Until next week!

Read through light novel vol. 3. Random thoughts.
Tumblr media
It's a weird thought to have to hope that this fantasy world has access to some form of abortion, be it a practical method or a magical one. I'm sure the various religious beliefs of their world wouldn't normally approve but when it comes to pregnancy forced onto someone by goblins, I'd like to think they'd make an exception. The women have already been through enough, they don't need the additional trauma of having one of those things crawling out of their bodies. I'd heard a rumor that the Fighter committed suicide after giving birth to a goblin baby but I've also heard other people say that never happened. Obviously I'd hope for the latter.
“...Hey, uh, Goblin Slayer... It kind of kills me to ask you this, but...” Female Knight gulped, and this seemed to embarrass her afresh as she flushed red. “If I... If I wear something like that, do you think it’d get his attention...?”
“I confess I must doubt the sanity of anyone who would ask me that question.”
There have already been plenty of funny moments throughout the other books but this volume is just really killing it so far. Goblin Slayer's personality and serious deadpan nature lends itself surprisingly well to comedy. It's a different style than the humor of, say, Konosuba, where plenty of the comedy is from these exaggerated characters interacting with their insane world. Here, the personalities are a lot more normal and realistic, which makes it really funny when they segway into non-serious topics like a festival, dates, battle bikini armor, or even bizarreness like Goblin Vampires.
There is something very amusing that the first meeting between Goblin Slayer and the Hero is her putting a sword to his throat. I'm a big fan of superheroes and it's not uncommon for crossover stories to begin almost exactly like that. The only thing missing was for the misunderstanding to lead to a fight before both realize they're both the good guy, but how it happened here fits a lot more with Goblin Slayer's mindset. Not offended or bothered in the least that Hero thought he was some kind of zombie and immediately acted with hostility, because he's very much a "better safe than sorry" kind of guy and probably would have done the same thing.
One of the reasons I liked Priestess the most out of the other characters in the anime, save for GS himself, was that she's the one who had the most interaction with Goblin Slayer and the most development alongside him. Their relationship was much more defined than his with the other characters and thus I was able to enjoy it more. That's why I like Cow Girl getting more of a spotlight on her date with Goblin Slayer here and the various conversations they have throughout the book. It helps me get to know her better and feel more invested in their relationship, romantic or otherwise.
It's probably because of his armor and the way he carries himself but I tend to forget Goblin Slayer isn't that old. He's only about twenty, which while still an adult isn't that old compared to a lot of the people around him. I think his age really hit me when I realized Guild Girl is older than him by about three years (they first met when he was 15 and she was 18). Just how the story writes what he's been doing ever since he became an adventurer and just the sheer horror we know the goblins are capable of makes it feel like he's been fighting them for far longer than five years.
So the rhea adventurer came back. Aaaand there he goes. When he was demoted in the anime I was afraid he was going to do something horrible in retaliation, like releasing goblins upon the town, or at least the Guild Girl. And my prediction was a little close to the truth. It's good writing that Goblin Slayer killing him (scaring the crap out of him first ("Is that so?" as he rises up from where he's supposed to be dead on the floor)) was actually relevant to the climax of the story. Almost everything that the story sets up always comes back into play later. Nothing feels like excess fat.
“Well, I mean... I guess...” But, blinking, Priestess concluded, “It was just my role in the plan.”
“You just don’t care with Orcbolg, do you? He could punch you in the face and you’d forgive him.”
“Ah— Ah, ha-ha-ha...”
If anyone even tried to punch Priestess in the face I'm pretty sure Goblin Slayer would break every bone in their hand. Even for as bloody and obsessive as he is, even if he could somehow tie it into killing goblins, it's hard to imagine him ever deliberately harming one of his own companions. Now, putting them in harm's way is a different story.
“I have taken your measure! You are no better than Ruby, the fifth rank. Or even Emerald, the sixth!”
“No,” Goblin Slayer said, shaking his head. “Try Obsidian.”
Goblin Slayer didn’t have it in him. But...
“O Earth Mother, abounding in mercy, grant your sacred light to we who are lost in darkness!”
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I LOVE THESE TWO SO MUCH! THAT IS F**KING TRUST AND RESPECT!
I am going to miss Dark Elf though. It was nice for Goblin Slayer to face an antagonist who could talk and wasn't also just a powerful brute in single combat like the Ogre or Goblin Lord.
“The fragrant olives.”
“Yeah?”
“I researched them, but I don’t think they fit me.”
“Oh, no?” Cow Girl cocked her head, the wind picking up her hair. “I think I’d have to disagree...”
...
Those flowers represented four things: purity, humility, true love...and first love.
I think it fits perfectly.
I don't remember if it was before or after I'd started watching the anime but I remember reading about people online complaining how Goblin Slayer himself was a very bland and boring character. That's there's nothing to him beyond his obsession with killing goblins.
I'll admit, he's no Monkey D. Luffy; a character with such a bombastic and defined personality that you can instantly picture it in your head, or no Ainz Ooal Gown; a character whose true inner self that the audience can see is at such odds with the side that everyone else in the story sees. Goblin Slayer is definitely a much quieter and reserved character, but I don't think that makes him bland. His obsession with killing goblins is the skeleton of his character and a lot of good stuff has been built around that. He's overly serious. He's always picking up on weird, random knowledge. He's inventive.
One of my favorite aspects of Goblin Slayer's character is he feels like someone whose trauma and obsession stunted his emotional growth and now that he is connecting with people again he isn't really sure how to conduct himself. It lends itself to a lot of comedy as well as a lot of really sweet moments. When he hangs out with Priestess. Talking about making ice cream with his party. Buying the toy ring for Cow Girl. Parts of himself that don't involve killing goblins are being brought out by all these people he's found himself attached to and I think he doesn't know how to feel about it, because even he never thought there'd be anything to him other than killing goblins.

More about my morally-grey heroines and their messed-up relationships
I wanted to elaborate on this post I wrote about D&F and BFS, but it turns out that adding readmore links to reblogs is a PITA, and I just now that this is gonna turn into a fucking novelette.
So here we go.
Time to go into some detail about this!
Let’s define our terms:
“Decline and Fall” is my 120K+ series of loosely chronological, interconnected short fics, set in a tiny fandom for a visual novel that’s been in alpha development since 2015. For the record, the word count disincludes unfinished drafts, and stories that I’m holding back because they’re based on canon spoilers.
“Blood from Stone“ is my 100K unfinished Skyrim WIP, which began as a response to a kink meme prompt, and is not so much a rarepair as a non-existent one.
Both of these stories centrally feature young female protagonists and their sexual relationship with a much older man. Both heroines are... “grey” to say the least.
Let’s compare our fandoms, shall we?
Skyrim is a juggernaut fandom for a super-popular RPG which is part of a 30-yo franchise. The setting is moderately dark and casually sprinkled with murder cults, cannibalism, secret police death squads, and the prison industrial complex. The player character can be a thief and a murderer and everyone just learns to be okay with it because the only alternative is a fiery apocalypse. They also rob graves for the lulz.
Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem is a pinkie-toe-sized fandom for a hybrid RPG and dating sim where attractive young people flirt and date for the purpose of brokering world peace. The setting is one where you can actually broker world peace effectively. The player character can perpetrate a fair amount of proxy violence, but maintaining a good reputation dishonestly is legitimately difficult.
Now, let’s compare our heroines:
Corinne is a 24-year-old bounty hunter who became a folk hero, a soldier, and a cult assassin. She’s living alone and working for a living since she was 18. She’s never been in love, but she’s had multiple sexual and romantic relationships in the past. I deliberately wrote her as being very sexually confident and self-assured. She also has combat training, magical training, her special Dragonborn powers, and an incalculable amount of social clout. By every metric, she’s a powerful character. Though she can talk her way out of a tight spot (all my favorite characters can), she can also fight her way out.
Verity is (at the beginning of D&F) not yet 18 years old. She’s a princess from a very conservative kingdom who was raised to become a barter bride in a diplomatic marriage. The values that were passed to her were duty, tradition, and absolute obedience. Her primary skills are social, charisma, eloquence, and persuasion. Then she was dropped into the deep water of a diplomatic summit and had the weight of future history put on her shoulders, without ever having been taught how to make her own decisions or live with her regret.
To sum up, we have one hyper-competent, confident, and independent badass, universally recognized as powerful and dangerous, and then we have someone who’s basically a deconstruction of a traditional fantasy princess.
Okay, what about the more specific setting within the game world?
BFS is set in Markarth, arguably the most corrupt city in Skyrim, and the site of a localized war, on top of the 2-3 other wars that Skyrim has going on. The city is controlled by the cartel-like Silver-Blood family, and their enemies are swiftly and brutally eliminated. The rule of law is a joke. When the player character arrives at Markarth, they witness a chain or murders and are drawn into a conspiracy that sees them sentenced to life in prison for a crime they didn’t commit. The ruling elite suppress the native underclass by a variety of inventive methods. The roads into the city are controlled by the remnants of a violent but failed uprising, and this uprising is actually the origin story of Skyrim’s entire civil war storyline.
D&F is set in Revaire, explicitly the most violently war-torn of the seven kingdoms. Once the epicenter of a conquering empire, it was a country full of arts and culture, until a bloody coup slaughtered the entire royal line and instituted a new and more brutal regime. The new regime is on shaky grounds and foresighted people predict its imminent fall to rebel forces. So much, so canon. In D&F, I made a point of developing the new royals and their small coterie of supporters, as well as illustrating their constant struggle to conceal how widely reviled they are by the populace, and most of the former nobility. Their apathy to the plight of the common people is underscored in contrast to Verity’s compassion, which is ridiculed as a sentimental feminine affectation.
I’m attracted to certain themes, as you might have noticed.
Now, we get to talk about love interests.
Thongvor Silver-Blood is rather anemically characterized in Skyrim’s canon, so much of the information that I include in BFS is inferred. From his limited number of dialogues in the game, we know that he’s politically ambitious, a Stormcloak supporter, easily angered, and that he has one legitimate friend in the city. Like most Skyrim characters of his age bracket, he served in the Great War. He’s defined by his relationship to his generational cohort. In BFS, he’s def8ined in contrast to his brother. Thonar is comfortable being thought of as a villain. Thongvor still needs to believe that he’s the good guy. And I’m gonna get more into that in later chapters, too.
As a love interest, he’s initially in awe of Corinne, and always genuinely adoring, but more than a little jealous and possessive. BFS is not a story about love redeeming bad men (don’t get me started), but Thongvor shows different sides of his personality to different people, and the side that Corinne gets to see is much nicer than what most people do.
Hyperion Asper is a character of my own devising, whose existence in 7KPP canon is purely implied. We know his children, Jarrod and Gisette, and we knew that he organized a coup to seize the throne. I posit him as a tyrant and unrepentant child-killer (not directly stated in D&F, at least not yet). He’s ruthless and manipulative and his sole purpose is maintaining a sense of personal power. I structured him as the bad example that Jarrod tries -- and fails -- to live up to.
As a love interest... look, he’s a man who’s cheating on his wife with his son’s wife. He seduces Verity and manipulates her, and takes a special delight in pushing her buttons. All his compliments to her are mean-spirited and back-handed. He’s also jealous and possessive... which is especially pathetic, since he’s jealous of his own son, whom Verity doesn’t even like. His rage is a constant implied undercurrent in the narrative.
And the relationship dynamics themselves?
Corinne kisses Thongvor, proposes marriage to him, and then sleeps with him before riding off into mortal danger. She’s fond and affectionate, but she shies away from intense emotions, whether negative or positive. Since they spend most of their time apart, their marriage has been defined by Thongvor yearning like a sailor’s wife, while Corinne ran around doing violence and crime. They only just had their first fight. It will change when they get to spend some more significant time together... but on the whole, their marriage is fairly happy, and the emotional dynamic favors Corinne -- so far. It’s not a pure gender reversal, but that element is definitely dominant.
Hyperion starts seducing Verity on their very first meeting, and relies on a combination of magnetic attraction and Verity’s inexperience in life to keep her coming back, against her better judgment. Their relationship is mutually defined by a combination of attraction and resentment of that attraction. The danger of the situation is an essential element, to the point where it’s hard to imagine their affair would survive without it. It’s a puzzle and a battle, a source of fascination but not of comfort. There’s lust involved, and curiosity, but not a shred of love or even like. The closest thing to genuine affection is when Verity briefly imagines that there could be a version of Hyperion she actually liked, cobbled from his various, hidden good qualities. Any trappings of a genuine relationship are deliberately discordant.
I have tried, more than once, to imagine an alternate universe in which these two could be happy. It can’t be done. they are a study in dysfunction.
So where’s the similarity, with all these differences outlined?
Corinne’s choice to marry into the Silver-Blood family makes her complicit in their rule of the Reach, corrupt and reactionary as it is. Her reluctance to accept being called by their name reflects a reluctance to confront unpleasant truths that’s fundamental to her character. Choosing to be one of them affects and will continue to affect how other people see her, mostly negatively, and mostly without her being aware of it. Being Thongvor’s wife has gained her enemies. The fact that she doesn’t share his more reactionary views is something that they’ve both chosen to elegantly ignore, but the rest of the world won’t be so generous.
Verity’s choice to marry into the Revaire royal family makes her complicit in their violence against the forces rebelling against them, albeit in a more subtle way. Her personal dislike of Jarrod and the fact that their marriage was purely political will not absolve her in anyone’s eyes. Neither will her compassionate and charitable character, which can only be seen as a fig leaf to the Revaire royals’ general brutality. She has lost at least one good friend -- who will never see her the same way, since she chose to throw her lot in with his enemies. She will go down in history as an Asper wife -- but if she’s lucky, not just as that.
Both Corinne and Verity choose to accept some of the violence of the system that they live under, in order to serve their own lofty, long-term goals. Both of them are more image-driven than they care to admit, and though they are genuinely caring and compassionate, they will readily sacrifice compassion in service on their goals. They are queens (or queen-like figures), one-degree-of-separation members of the ruling class, implicated but not directly in control.
And their relationships serve to highlight what they are willing to accept, even though it goes against their conscience.
Is there a conclusion to be drawn here?
Sort of. I want to write about power, compromise and complicity. For whatever reason, it turns out that yw/om relationships are... a really good vehicle for exploring that. I can’t really explain why that is, just yet. I just... have had these thoughts floating, unstructured, in my head for months on end. I needed to get them out on paper, and give them some semblance of order.
I don’t even know why anyone but me would read this, as long and meandering as it is. But having it accessible might be of use to me.

MORTAL KOMBAT (2021)
there has yet to be a truly capital-G Great movie based on a video game. There was hope that the latest stab at “Mortal Kombat” might stand a chance to break that trend. The short answer is a hearty “No,” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t fun to be had here.
If all you know of “Mortal Kombat” is that it’s a video game that, upon its debut in arcades in 1992, swiftly helped spur a national pearl-clutching tour by politicians and parents’ groups over the level of “realistic” gore and violence found within, you might be surprised to learn that the bones of the story and characters are actually pretty fun. It treads heavily from the roots of comic books and classic kung fu movies which inspired series creators John Tobias and Ed Boon. So while there’s nothing terribly original about a secret martial arts tournament where people with extraordinary powers duke it out to decide the fate of the universe, the sort of (mostly) straight-faced sincerity used to bring it all to life fits perfectly well within the cinematic landscape that regularly sees people with godlike powers traipsing across movie screens these days.
And to its credit, this take on “Mortal Kombat” never shies away from any of the incredibly outlandish aspects of the series: Warrior monks who can throw fireballs from their bare hands. Laser eyes. A sorcerer who can (quite literally) suck a man’s soul from his body. Another warrior monk but this one uses a razor-edged hat as a throwing weapon and teleportation device. It’s all here. There’s some nominal explanation as to how or why these characters get superpowers, but for the most part it amounts to “just because, now watch this guy with a New Jersey accent wearing a cyber mask use hook swords and run so fast he can teleport.”
Given the way audiences have simply come to accept comic book heroes and given the movie’s overall embrace of the outlandish, it then becomes somewhat baffling that someone along the line decided it was absolutely essential that we be guided into this world via a brand new character who can act baffled at all this weird stuff happening. It might have made more sense had any questions been truly asked or, more crucially, been answered, but we never even really get an answer as to why exactly a martial arts tournament is what decides the fate of Earth. At the very least it would have been worth it had this character, Cole Young, been played by anyone with even a hint of genuine charisma. Alas, despite his best efforts, Lewis Tan simply doesn’t have the juice to shoulder the weight given him.
Then again, he’s not really helped by Dave Callaham and Greg Russo’s script. It’s clear that there is an abiding affection for the legacy of “Mortal Kombat” and its world and characters. Fans of the games will have no trouble recognizing the likes of Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) or Kano (Josh Lawson). But the story is so thin and gives the surprisingly large cast very little to do overall.
After losing an underground MMA match, Cole learns that he’s been chosen to take part in a tournament known as, you guessed it, Mortal Kombat. Shang Tsung (Chin Han), an evil, soul-sucking sorcerer, however is bound and determined to make sure a tournament never happens, thus making it that much easier for him to take over Earthrealm. Fights and fatalities ensue.
And that’s...pretty much it. Cole meets up with an eclectic group of other fighters as they attempt to train and prepare for the tournament, but this mostly relegates them and the film to a massive cave temple somewhere in Asia. Not exactly the most dynamic or exciting location, especially given how wild and vibrant so much of the video game’s fight locale’s have become over the years.
So if the film’s budget (clearly) held back its visual potential and its lead leaves much to be desired, how could I possibly claim there’s fun to be had? This is where checking your expectations at the door helps.
To put it succinctly: “Mortal Kombat” is not “The Raid.” It is not “John Wick.” It doesn’t rise to the fairly high standard that has been set since Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first “Mortal Kombat” in 1995. Simon McQuoid’s 2021 film doesn’t even hit the highs of a lot of Scott Adkins’ direct-to-DVD outings. (Although that’s not an insult to Adkins, as he’s a legitimately great movie martial artist and you should watch his movies.) This “Mortal Kombat” lies somewhere in between. It tries hard. It brings in accomplished martial artists like Taslim and even Tan, whose father, Philip, is an accomplished stunt performer and choreographer.
Could the combat (kombat?) have been better? Without question. But what’s here is fun. The fights are competent and not edited to shreds. But perhaps more importantly, it’s one of the first movies based on a video game to not only nail the iconic visual aspect of the characters, but to truly and fully lean into the fact that these people all do wild and silly things like shoot lasers from their eyes or throw fireballs. It also delivers in spades the games’ trademark, outlandish violence. To save my editor from sternly admonishing me for describing (even mildly) the things certain characters have happen to them, suffice to say it makes the digitized, roughly pixelated violence of the 1992 look positively PG-rated by comparison. No doubt this will turn off more than a few potential viewers, but there’s no denying that fans of the series flock to it in large part for this reason. So if you find entertainment in violence that’s so absurdly over-the-top it swings right around to being comical, this version of “Mortal Kombat” delivers to a satisfying degree.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t also single out actor Josh Lawson. His performance as Kano is hands down my favorite part of the film and he fills every scene he’s in with a delightfully smarmy energy, much as the late Trevor Goddard did playing the same character in the 1995 film.
Maybe my enjoyment (or soft judgment) of the film is due more to the fact that it’s just good to see new movies again, and to do so with friends. I got a few (fully vaccinated) buddies to come join me in my backyard, I set up an outdoor screen and projector and streamed “Mortal Kombat” from my laptop and we had a blast laughing at and with the movie and generally relishing the absurdity, the competent fights and some fun characters.
It’s entirely possible this movie won’t hold up on repeat viewing as such instances will inevitably be divorced from the context in which it was originally viewed, but that’s OK. This time out I got some very basic enjoyment out of it and had a good time with friends and sometimes that’s more than enough.

Darkwing Duck Reviews: Tiff of the Titans
Tumblr media
Uh-Oh, Gizmoduck Comes to town! In the first of a series of reviews building up to Just Us Justice Ducks,  the dopey, arrogant, anti-charasmatic, national embarrassment heads to St. Canard to guard a super weapon from F.O.W.L. Naturally, he ends up being more of a problem for our hero than the actual bad guys. Also a look at Tad Stone’s claims the series isn’t in the same universe as Ducktales.  Full review and recap commissioned by @weirdkev27 under the cut
This review, much like Death, Taxes and Thanos, was inevitable. I’d been planning to watch and review the first appearances of each of the justice ducks and fearsome five as my next step in watching Darkwing duck anyway, and while I’ve already got one member’s appearance in the wings anyway, I’ll get to that tomorrow or Saturday just in time for Halloween, hint hint, Kev pushed this one into the queue with a commission and I  was happy to take the side trip to see just what the Darkwing version of Gizmoduck and Steelbeak, two of my favorites in the reboot, were like originally. So welcome folks to the build to the greatest superhero team made up of ducks of all time, let’s get quackin.
We open, here in Duckburg, where the Eggmen are breaking in. Sadly they do not have the master plan, but they are here to steel the Comarant, a super powerful land, sea and air device the military is storing there. They instead find Gizmoduck! Who makes a good first impression, being a hoaky superman parody in iron man’s costume in this continuity, but it’s a nice way to contrast to Darkwing’s batman parody with a touch of Sandman.. the pulp one not the neil gaiman one.  Sadly he doesn’t have a cool gas mask but the Darkwing Duck costume is iconic without it.
Point is the eggmen are easily repelled, though they do get away by blasting Gizmo with a tank. The General in charge is thankful for Gizmoduck’s help, but notes the Comarant will be heading to St. Canard soon for a demonstration at the big air show, and asks that Giz go over and protect it, maybe even work with Darkwing to protect it. Though Gizmo shoots that down, and not only insults Darkwing but says he’s not sure if he’s good or bad. While the latter comment did sour me on the guy.. research bears out Darkwing has been framed once or twice, and my own experience with the pilot saw him you know breaking out of jail and basically clamming superheroes are above the law, so I COULD get why someone wouldn’t trust him, even if Giz’s attitude about it still isn’t great. So fenton quick changes behind a sign and heads off to see his old buddy Launchpad.  A quick aside before we get going this episode doesn’t so much torch Tad Stone’s retroactive claim this isn’t the same universe as Ducktales, as burn it to ashes, take a whiz on those ashes and send each separate ash on a seperate probe to the farthest reaches of space. This episode not only has a cameo by Scrooge on a billboard.. but it’s one for DUCKBURG. Where Gizmoduck is said to be from. He also knows launchpad well, and vice versa, and outright mentions McDuck Manor. the episode couldn’t be saying “this is the same universe as ducktales’ harder if Scrooge himself showed up and started ranting about a Sea Monster eating his ice cream. I do like and respect Tad Stones, but I will never like or respect this claim of his and even if HE had that idea in his head during production of the show, it’s very clear everyone else including Disney who greenlit the Darkwing Duck comics explicitly connecting the two universes, felt it was a shared universe, and there’s really no reason they can’t coexist.
If it’s because “Well launchpad wouldn’t leave scrooge”.. besides the fact Scrooge tried to fire him MULTIPLE times, it’s not farfetched Scrooge would put him in charge of a hangar both because he trusts him.. and to get rid of him since he doesn’t like Launchpad very much. Plus Donald has to come back from his tour of duty sometime and likely could easily do Launchpad’s job as pilot, as he did in the source material. My point is there’s tons of ways to write the man out easily, and he could just as easily be doing both jobs like in the reboot. This feels like a weird, unnecessary retcon no one wanted and everyone just politely ignores, like the creators of Doug saying he and Patti didn’t end up together after High School. Which even then makes more sense than this claim, since at least there I get the creators not thinking a high school romance would last forever. That’s fair.. it’s just not something fans really wanted to hear after spending two separate series and a movie getting them together. It would be like if Girl Meets World had revealed Cory and Topanga had divorced. Yes it’d be possible since they’d broken up twice over the course of the series, but no one wanted that, why would you do that. I’m getting off topic, the point is a few breakups aside Doug and Patti clearly married eventually, and Darkwing Duck and Ducktales are in the same universe. Sometimes you just have to ignore Word of God for your own sanity.
Back at the actual episode we cut to Steelbeak’s Bowling Alley Hideout... and I do love a job that allows me to say things like that. But in a really fantastic bit Steelbeak is bowling his minions over as punishment for failure.. even though they have a valid reason but eh he’s the bad guy and he has to get his bowling average up for FOWL’s bowling team somehow. Their insurance covers evil punishment related accidents anyways, they’ll be fine.
But yeah let’s talk about Steelbeak for a second. I honestly hadn’t seen any of the original version so I was curious.. and he’s really damn awesome. Rob Paulsen always does a great job though and is always a pleasure, but he really does a good job here and with the contrast in him: He’d seem like a dumb thug, what with his gangster accent and general cockiness and swagger.. but he backs it up with great combat and even greater planning. He’s a schemer, a fighter and damn if he isn’t fun to watch.  It also makes me love the reboot version even more. While I already loved him for being played by Jason Mantzokus, being enjoyably dim, while also still enough of a threat to be freaking cool, it’s even cooler knowing he’s still fundamentally the same character. Much like Drake he’s simply been tweaked a bit. For drake it was softening the edges since Ducktales isn’t as broad a show, and neither will the darkwing reboot i’m betting, so his ego and selfishness is sanded down considerably. For Steelbeak it’s giving him an actual origin: Instead of starting at the top of FOWL, he’s starting as a very competent but very wet behind the ears and full of himself agent, working his way up to becoming justifably full of himself like the original show. He has the same swagger and badassery, he’s just not a master planner yet and he’ll get there. Like many of the reboot characters, he’s simply an already great character given some extra depth and rounding out. I love both and can’t wait to see him again next ep and hopefully he’ll show up in the Darkwing reboot so they can go for round 2.
So with that out of the way, Darkwing naturally interrupts, and cleans house with his gas gun, forcing Steelbeak and his crew to literally go underground into the sewers. This successfully fools drake, and Steelbeak bemoans how both Darkwing and Gizmoduck have been thwarting his plans.. until he gets a great idea; pit them against each other so he can pilfer the comerant while their too busy fighting. It’s a classic supervillain tactic, and one that works perfectly because one of them’s an egotist and a dick and the other is also that but with more style and likeability.  Back at Drake’s place, Gosalyn and Honker are watching a horror movie they clearly aren’t supposed to till Drake and launchpad come back in via their easy chairs flipping them in from Darkwing Tower which is just.. really cool. I like it. I also like that much like the Shakespeare bust in Wayne Manor, Darkwing has his own neat statue to provide acess to his lair... a tiny bronze statue of Basil from the Great Mouse Detective.. I REALLY need to fucking watch that film but it’s a nice nod. But yeah Launchpad brought them back because he feels drake could use a break while Drake refuses to stop because crime never stops and he doesn’t have time for it and your usual self destructive bollocks. It’s interrupted by a knock at the door?
Tumblr media
It’s Fenton! Whose stopped in to see his old buddy launchpad, who is happy to see his old friend and the two catch up, though Drake dosen’t like the interuption because Classic Drake is kind of a grumpus. Fenton naturally is here because Gizmoduck is but says he’s doing a job for the military.. which makes no sense but given Drake doesn’t know what he does and Launchpad dares to be stupid, if not nearly as stupid as his reboot version, no one questions it. When Fenton says he needs to find a hotel Launchpad, being Launchpad, invites him to stay and while Fenton watches the movie with the kids, Drake wants him gone because you know he has a secret identity to keep and a case to work on and they don’t know if they can trust him with it. It’s fair.. but since this is Drake he almost handles it with the subtly of a howitzer. But before he can try to literally throw Fenton out on his ass, a news report comes on about an attack at a local theater and both head off to take care of it.. we also get a nice moment where both react to it with the same words at the same time.  Fenton.. is actually really likeable. He’s a bit awkward, more in that he sort of barges in and makes himself comfy.. but it’s very easy to see from this and the one Ducktales episode of his i’ve seen where the utterly marvelous reboot version gets some traits from: his nervousness, his pluckness, his lack of thinking things through ocasionally when he’s not overthinking them. Fenton is charming. The issue is once he switches on the costume he goes from utterly charming to punchable REALLL quick. I’ll explain my problems with his alter ego in a sec.
At the theater Steelbeak fakes it to look like Darkwing’s doing the bombing, if half haphazardly and leaves Darkwing with the bomb so when Gizmo shows up he thinks he’s responsible. Darkwing naturally says it wasn’t him, but Gizmo dosen’t buy it and asks if he’s so good how come he wears a mask... says the guy in a helmeted visor’s whose only defense when that’s pointed out is it came with the suit. Which yes is a joke.. but it fails to land and instead of being funny just makes Gizmo look like a hypocritical dick whose assuming someone is evil based on flimsy evidence, and what’s very obviously a setup. it makes him come off as the biggest dumbass alive instead of this world’s superman and that is annoying. More ranting about him in a minute. We do end up getting an incredibly funny bit where the two end up arguing over who gets to defuse a bomb, with both wrestling over it till Gizmoduck takes care of it and both fall into the theater. Gizmoduck tries to arrest Darkwing who ignores him and runs off.  The next day the Mallard family, including Honker naturally, watches Gizmoduck get a parade, a key to the city and other good stuff on the news while Drake sulks before turning it off. And yeah i’ve waited long enough let’s talk about this version of Gizmoduck and why he does not work. I get in theory he’s supposed to be “The Cape”, minus the cape: The big cheese that everyone looks up to and loves to Darkwing’s  dark avenger of the night, a parody of that whose also really dumb. The issue is two fold. The first is .. the classic archtypical cape type chracter has been parodied to hell and back by 2020. He’s been a monster, an asshole and as with here an idiot. And even for then a superman parody, if not in apperance or powers but in treatment, whose really dumb wasn’t very new.
And you CAN parody a big silver age type hero: Justice League International did so well without being too overt, having most of the team either annoyed or actively hostile to Shazam/Captain Marvel. But it was done well there because well.. billy’s a very corny very earnest and likeable kid in an adult’s body. To us he’s charming and loveable. But to a bunch of actual adults he’d be offputting at best and annoying at worst. While some have been annoyed at how he was handled, I a fan of both JLI and Shazam liked it and thought it was an interesting take. Another REALLY good and REALLY hilarious take on this is from fellow superhero action comedy Danny Phantom, one of my favorites and one I need to revisit. One episode had Danny split himself in two so he could crimefight and have fun with his friends resulting in one self whose a burnt out slacker, and another whose an over the top crimefighter who says things like “you Felonious fiend!” And “This looks like a job for the vacuum cleaner!”. It’s a damn good episode. My point is it’s been better done before and since.
What doesn’t help is the episode tries to paint it as equal, since Darkwing’s problem in part is Gizmoduck stealing his thunder.. but it doesn’t work. Darkwing is a fully fleshed out character we know and love who despite his huge ego and rampant jackassery, is a decent person whose fought hard for St. Canard, loves his daughter and most damingly... is entertainingly sickish. Gizmoduck’s dickery just makes him come off less likeable and incredibly dense, while Darkwing’s is part of his charm and, along with his ego, has backfired enough to balance it out. Gizmo just doesn’t get comeuppance for his behavior, and instead gets rewarded with a parade, a key to the city, cheerleaders and Gosalyn looking up to him just for having powers in his gadgets. And really his methods aren’t that different from dark wing: While Darkwing is secretive, a loner and uses gadgets.. Gizmoduck’s suit is basically one BIG gadget, and he refuses to see. And I get that’s probably the joke but it just. doesn’t. LAND. It just makes him insufferable. And as far as I can tell in the original show he wasn’t: he was an awkward dork we root for like in the reboot, not a gloryhogging jackass whose squandered his good will long before he gets Darkwing isn’t evil and tries working with him to the point I don’t care by the time that happens: He’s already been so obnoxious it dosen’t make up for it. Maybe later appearances are better but he’s just a chore to watch in costume here. And that’s WITHOUT comparing him to the 2017 version, one of my favorites there, one of the best animated superheroes i’ve seen in a long time, and a toughly likeable character who struggles due to his superhero identity but took it up for exactly the right reasons and wants to help people. Darkwing Gizmoduck thinks he’s the cape and an inspiration when a good guy when he’s worse than the guy he hates at times. Reboot Gizmo is an honest, decent guy who simply wants to help people and use the gizmotech as a way to do that, to help change the world for the better and save the helpless, and only clashes with Darkwing due to his ego and lack of understanding that Gizmoduck and him really aren’t that different. Finally if THIS is why Tad Stones wants them to be different universes, because this Fenton is different from the Ducktales one in personality.. then that’s on HIM. That’s on him for writing this version poorly or letting him get written so poorly and not on the fans who had no reason not to connect a dot. God this character was disappointing and hopefully when I watch more of him at work in Ducktales, he isn’t this obnoxious, nor will he hopefully be in his sequel episodes.  Thankfully moving on Darkwing gets to work, because you know he has experience, and finds Steelbeak trying to pilfer the cormorant but Captain Clueless interrupts and tries to arrest him. The two then finally fight and while it’s sadly short, it’s a fun clash and I genuinely hope the reboot has it’s own fight with them, as given how damn good they are at fight scenes, it’s bound to be even more awesome. But Steelbeak gets away, and uses the comarant’s secret weapon.. a giant fake egg that drops a giant pile of yolk to drown them. Gizmo finally realizes he’s been fighting the wrong guy but our hero's are now running out of time. Darkwing , being the actually capable one here, has Gizmo uses his propeller to beat the eggs and the two head off.. though after a funny bit where Gizmo breaks the Ratcatcher’s sidecar Darkwing lets him use his spare tier, which is huge and likely intended for the main vehicle. Good stuff.  The two get after Steelbeak and while Gizmo makes me pray for death but death won’t come we get a fun battle with Steelbeak including Steelbeak using his beak to bite down and destroy the gas gun. It’s a damn fun bit I must say. But eventually the good guys win, disable the comarant and Darkwing beats Steelbeak. The day is save, FOWL is foiled, our heroes are on shaky but better terms, and Drake and Fenton depart on good if equally shaky terms, before arguing about which of them is better. And we’re out.  Final Thoughts: This.. was a disappointingly mixed bag. Gizmoduck REALLY drug down what was otherwise a good episode with a great concept: Bringing in a hero whose stronger and more popular than Darkwing.. but mostly uses it to make Darkwing look good, which he didn’t need, and make Gizmoduck look REALLY bad, intentionally or otherwise. Steelbeak is a delight and his plan, and the egg trap, are really good, and as mentioned there are enough good set pieces to prevent this from being a terrible episode.. but as an old friend says for me time and time again...

Robin and Gale Hood; Ben Hardy x reader Chap. 4
*Author’s note*
After thinking about how in some versions of Robin Hood they expand more on the Merry Man and how Disney’s only version doesn’t (just has Robin hood and little John) so I’ve decided to rectify that and add more members of the Merry Men.  Now these names are actually the names of other members (well except for one name I had along with keeping the original name) so here’s the final cast list of what I have in store for you all.
Cast list:
The Scotsman: Richard Madden
David of Doncaster: Jamie Bell
Gilbert Whitehand: Taron Egerton
Friar Tuck: Brian May (think early 1990′s Bri)
Chapter 4,
Sherwood forest

Gale Hood was riding along back to Sherwood forest to meet up with her brother and Little John, and along the way three more lovely chaps came riding up behind her and called out to her.
“Oi Gale!” cried out a handsome dark haired, blue eyed Scotsman riding a pure black stallion.  She turned and smiled and said.
“I see you gentlemen have returned from your voyage. Tell me how were the other towns?” she asked the men.
“About the same as Nottingham is. I fear that if Prince John isn’t stopped he’ll suck the taxes out of not just Nottingham but all of England.” Said a young Welsh man with a tuff of brown hair riding a white horse.
“We’ll find a way Gilbert. One way or another. So how were the Sharpe’s Gale?” said the third gentleman with long shoulder length brown hair riding a brown horse.
“Veronica will soon be feeling better thanks to the medicine you helped me find David.”
Guess I should explain to you gentle readers.  These three dashing young men are also apart of Robin and Gale’s Merry men.  Sure there have been many tales of just Robin and Little John, but in this story we’re going to shed some light on some more members of the Hood sibling’s gang.
The Scotsman, well that’s really his name in the gang.  He was wanted for such crimes back in his Scotland home, that he rid his real name forever and just went by ‘The Scot’.  But every now and then he would be called ‘Kit’ by our gang of outlaws.
At first he wasn’t even permitted to join the group (mostly because the Scots and the English didn’t really like each other) less he bested Robin Hood in fair combat (to which he did).
Tumblr media
The second chap on the white horse is known as Gilbert Whitehand. He is really the only person (besides Gale) that is up to Robin’s skill with a bow and arrow.  He has a keen eye and it is said he can even shoot an arrow without even looking at the target.
He can be quick and rash at times, especially when it’s about protecting the poor people but when need to he can be reasoned with and is above all else loyal to a fault.
Tumblr media
The third gentleman with the long brown hair is David of Doncaster.  He’s more like the voice of reason of the band.  Whenever tempers fly or someone’s about to get killed (and it has happened before on an occasion or ten) David is the one there to make the peace.  He and Gale were especially close since they both had a similar experience on how their mother’s were killed when they were kids.
He’s also been her confidant (basically he’s her Little John in a way) especially when James left for London and she was heartbroken.
Tumblr media
“That’s good.” There was silence through the air, an awkward silence.  So much so that Gale stopped her khaki colored mare and turned towards the three men whose horses stopped and let out a few nickers and neighs at the sudden stop.
“I know what you three are thinking. And believe me I already know.”
“Know what?” asked David.
“Yeah we-we-we don’t know what you’re talking about.” Gilbert tried to play off.
“Don’t lie to me boys. I know that James and Marian are back.”
“What?!” they all faux out innocently.  They then each began to say how they didn’t hear about it.
But one look from Gale and they broke down and all said that they knew and heard about it from the town’s over.
“You lot are so adorable.”
“Well it’s just that…..we look at you as our own little sister and well—when James left never did I want to beat the shit out of royalty before.” Gilbert said.
“Yeah and that would’ve gotten you a front row seat to the hangman’s noose.” David said.
“Look we know how happy he made you and—how miserable you were the first few months lassie. So we—but secretly we’ve been thinking that maybe with him back in Nottingham you both could……”
“I’ll stop you right there Kit. It’s been over 6 years since he left. And in that time with him being the next in line he’s destined to find a woman of royalty to marry and support an heir. There’s no future for us anymore.”
“Gale…….”
“You know as well as I do David. Besides he’s probably forgotten all about me.”
“If he had Gale, then why would he give you his family’s ring?” Gilbert asked.  Gale clenched the ring around her neck into her fist.
“Robin and Little John are waiting for us. We can’t keep them waiting.” She urged her mare onward.
The three gents looked at one another sympathetically for their female leader but urged their horses onward.
When they got back to the entrance of Sherwood forest. Which lay right by a medium sized water fall.  They got off their horses and took the saddles off before sending them off back into the woods.
One by one they walked across the stone-cobbled path that stood over the water before entering behind the waterfall and walked through a tight cave entrance.
And there in the middle of the vast extension of the forest was a campsite with laundry hanging to dry, a few tables and chairs, and a large fireplace surrounded by stones and rocks to keep the flames from spreading.
“YOU’RE BURNING THE FOOD!!” Little John’s voice exclaimed.
“Uh-oh. He’s at it again.” Kit muttered.  The four of them walked around a large tree and there was Little John fanning a smoking pot with one of his newly washed clothes.
“Sorry Johnny. Guess I was thinking about Maid Marian again.” Robin said as he wiped his shirt of the soot and ash from the burned dinner. “I can’t help it……I love her John.”
“So you’ve heard too brother?” Gale’s voice soon spoke up. Robin and Little John turned and when they saw the rest of their gang and family arrive, Robin nodded.
“Yeah. And I assume you—”
“Please not—I don’t want to hear another word of it.”
“Look why don’t you two stop pining and moaning about just marry those two already will yah?” Little John said as he tried to cool down and save the burnt food.
“Marry them?!” the siblings exclaimed.
“You don’t just walk up to a girl, hand her a bouquet and say ‘hey remember me? We were kids together will you marry me?’ No. It just isn’t done that way.” Robin said as he mimed out his first statement before turning away solemnly and going to check the laundry.
“Oh c’mon Rob, climb the castle walls. Sweep her off her feet. Carry her off in style.” Gilbert said.
“It’s no use Gilbert, I’ve thought it all out and it just wouldn’t work. Besides what have I got to offer her?” Robin sighed.
“Well for one thing you can’t cook.” Little John said as he sniffed the food before trying to save the taste by dumping some water into it.
“I’m serious lads, she’s a high born lady of quality.”
“So the lass has class. So what?” Kit said.
“I’m an outlaw that’s what!” Robin shouted as he hung the shirt Little John used to fan the food back over a tree branch. “That’s no life for a lovely lady always on the run. What kind of future is that anyways?”
Gale looked at her brother solemnly before looking down at Prince James’ ring and clenched it in her palm.
“Oh for heaven’s sake son!” a voice suddenly cried out. Robin fell into the laundry basket and when he looked up he saw standing before him was the good Friar of Nottingham, Friar Tuck.
He was a middle aged man that stood about 6’2. Surprisingly for a Friar, he had wild curly dark hair.  He was a kind hearted soul who not only gave his life into helping the poor people of Nottingham in this time of crisis, but he also was a father figure to our gang of outlaws.
Tumblr media
In fact Robin and Gale’s mother had asked the Friar to watch over her two children before she died and he kept that word like it was the word of God.
“You and your sister aren’t outlaws. Why someday you both will be called great heroes.”
“A hero?” laughed Robin. “You hear that sister? We’ve just been pardoned.”
“Well that’s a gag. We hadn’t even been arrested yet.” Gale said releasing the ring from her grip.  Friar Tuck walked up to her and gently ruffled her hair as he said.
“Alright laugh and doubt an old Friar you young rouges. But I swear to you there’s going to be a big to-do in Nottingham.” He then walked over to the stewpot, took the spoon that Little John was using and took a small sip of it.
Before anyone could have a chance to warn him that the stew was beyond repair, he started coughing and tears began to stream down his face.
“Well done ain’t it?” he croaked out.  David quickly prepped a cup of water and handed it to the good Friar who took it and rinsed out the bad after taste of the burnt stew.
“You’re lucky your cooking didn’t kill him.” Gale hissed lowly to her brother.
“Like you’re any better at cooking than I am.” Robin sneered back.
“No need for arguments children.” Friar Tuck gently scolded as he cleared his throat.
“Sorry Friar.” The two rebels said solemnly like two children being caught doing something naughty.
“Anyway. I bring news from the minstrel.”
“Ahh. And what does ol Alan O’Dale sing about these days?” asked Gilbert as he perched up along his favorite tree branch.
“Tomorrow, Prince John is hosting a championship archery tournament.”
“Archery tournament. Ha! Robin, Gale and I could win that standing on our heads with our eyes closed.” Boasted Gilbert as he fiddled with one of his black tipped arrows and gave a wink at the siblings.
“Oh Gilbert you flatterer. But I’m sure we’re not invited.” Gale said.
“No. But there will be a couple people who’ll be disappointed if you don’t come.” Friar Tuck said as he took another sip of the water.
“Oh yeah. Like ol bushel britches the ‘honorable Sheriff of Nottingham’.” Little John mimicked the Sheriff’s deep monotoned voice.
“And of course let’s not forget the ruler of this land Prince John. ‘Mummy!’” Kit mimicked as he began to suck his thumb.
“No……Maid Marian and Prince James.”
“Marian?” Robin said in shock.
“And James?” Gale whispered in the same tone.
“Yes. The prize along with a golden arrow is that she’ll also be giving a kiss to the winner.” Friar Tuck winked at the rest of the band before softly chuckling.
“A kiss to the winner?” Robin gasped happily. “Oo-de-lally! C’mon you lot what are we waiting for!?” Robin cheered ecstatically.
“Wait a minute now Robin! What if this is a trap? You know how both Prince John and the Sheriff both want your head for different reasons. What if this is some plot to lure you out?” David warned.
“You underestimate me my dear David. Besides, faint hearts never won fair lady. So fear not my friend, this will be my greatest performance!”
“Where’s Gale?” Little John soon spoke up.  As the six men looked around, they did notice that their only female rouge was in fact missing.
“I’ll go find her.” Robin said.
“Pardon me Robin, but allow me to go find your sister.” Friar Tuck offered.  Robin, secretly knowing that his own sister probably didn’t want to talk to him, allowed Friar Tuck to go search for his sister.
Further down the trail that Friar Tuck used to enter Sherwood Forest, he found Gale sitting among a field of veronica flowers.  Friar Tuck smiled solemnly and walked up towards her and said.
“It is said that the Veronica flower symbolizes fidelity and love. I even saw Prince James pick up a few of these flowers when he and Marian first arrived back to Nottingham. And I could tell that he was thinking of you.” Gale continued to look down at the flowers, fiddling with the purple buds within. “You doubt my words my dear?”
“No. I believe it.” She muttered.  Friar Tuck looked at her with soft eyes. “Friar Tuck……was it my fault for loving him?”
“Love is not a fault. Nor is it a flaw.” She looked at him confused.  He did sometimes like to talk in strange riddles and tongues and it sometimes did get annoying to her when he did that, especially to her. “I also seem to recall seeing the scar on his chin from when you first met and you knocked that rock against his handsome face.”
That at least got a smile out of Gale.  A real smile to which the good Friar softly chuckled.
“Listen my child;” he placed his arm over her shoulders and the two looked at each other as he continued, “Love is a deep magic that is the most powerful thing the good Lord has given us. It helps us define right from wrong. And governs all of our destines. Yours, mine, your brother’s, as well as Marian and James.”
“But what if he’s forgotten about me?”
“If he had then he never would’ve come back with Marian.”
“And what about forgiveness?” she said sadly as she looked down, tears filling her eyes.  Friar Tuck gently wiped a hidden tear from the corner of her eye and he said.
“My sweet Gale. I understand your fear about meeting James after what happened between the two of you. But I need you to also consider of what James has gone through. My good friend King Richard has told me of how depressed his son has become since that day.”
“You really think I should go see him, don’t you?” she asked after a long silence between the two of you.
“It’s not my place to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. You are a mature, beautiful young woman. All I ask is that you make the choice that you won’t regret making.” He tucked a strand of her wild black hair behind her ear before placing his hand against her cheek.
She nuzzled against his warm palm before Friar Tuck placed his forehead against hers.
The two of them remained in that position.  Gale Hood drawing strength and love from the good Friar who had been the only father figure she had ever known in her whole life.
He gave her a gentle and loving kiss to her forehead before standing back up and left her to return to the church.  Gale looked down at the ring and unhooked the chain from her neck.  She let it drop down to her palm and she looked down to admire the family crest.
The proud lion staring right into her very soul.  As tears poured down her face, she placed the ring to her lips before finally for the first time in years, placing the ring back onto her left thumb (since it was the only finger it would fit on her).
When she returned back to her camp, her brother was the first to look up at her.  The others soon followed and the men waited patiently for her to speak.
“Whatever you lot have hatched up—I want in.” Robin walked up to his sister and asked her.
“You sure?”
“I’ve been wallowing in self-pity and guilt for years. I—I want to finally clear my conscious and finally face my past head on.” Robin smiled at his little sister and pressed his forehead against hers, their noses grazing one another’s.
“I’m proud of you sister. We’ll get through this together.” Gale nodded and repeated.
“Together forever.”
“Never apart.” Robin whispered.  He then came around to her side, slinging his arm over Gale and he said. “Gents, slight change to the plan now. We’ve got ourselves a new actor in our midst. Here’s what will happen now.”
Throughout the night, our band of rouges rehearsed and rehearsed their upcoming performance and this time both Robin and Gale would get the closure they needed.
Finally reuniting with their childhood lovers and hopefully rekindle the flames that they feared were long extinguished.

The Good Game Critics TM (a giant post o’ links)
yesterday i was complaining:
damn, how come the only people who are writing The Good Video Game Criticism TM are exclusively relegated to… abandoned Blogspots and Tumblrs that haven’t been updated in five years…?
and someone asked:
addadashofpepper: can you like, post links to some of these? cause the thing about these is that they are really hard to find!
oh boy, tumblr user @addadashofpepper, i would be DELIGHTED to share.  i dug through my RSS reader / bookmarks, and here’s what leapt out at me:
[under a cut because this got LONG and i got EXCITED]
ella guro: indie dev and creator of Problem Attic, which made a splash back in the day (a somewhat Braid-inspired platformer iirc).  she’s mostly removed herself from the game scene these days, but she still blogs about artsy-culture issues from time to time, and if you dig through the archives, some of her old posts on games (probably circa 2012-2015?) are so so good
prophet goddess / blood church: i discovered them literally two days ago, but i’m digging what i see (their ladykiller in a bind review was the first post i stumbled on)
dead genre chronicles: a group of three friends did a monthly JRPG podcast, where they’d play a JRPG in its entirety and talk about it.  see, they found mainstream discussions around JRPGs annoyingly stilted, including the term JRPG itself—like, we’re still using the term “JRPG” to mean “turn-based combat with funky anime aesthetics,” but that airbrushes over so many weird and fun and distinctive mechanics that developers inside-and-outside of Japan have been experimenting with, right?
they had a blog attached to the podcast, and the blog was ALSO excellent
unfortunately, they took their main website down a while back :( however:
you can get some of the old blog posts by fiddling with the wayback machine
becky backed up a bunch of her contributions to the site (i particularly liked her ffxv post & this sort-of ffxiii post that punched me in the face in a good way)
leeroy, one of the other contributors, blags here, though i don’t think he backed up his stuff from the original site
the entirety of the podcast is archived on libsyn and is very good if you’re into podcasts!
no don’t die: okay, this blog/interview series is AMAZING.  and still active!!!  ahh!!!
the whole concept is, this dude finds people who work in games.  or used to work in games.  or who ran a weird fansite for video games back in the early 00′s.  or curate some video-game-shaped things as part of a museum exhibit.  and so on, and so forth.
the dude has a knack for finding really interesting people with all kinds of windows/perspectives on games, and manages to get them to talk about really interesting things.  two of my fave interviews: rebecca heinman, who ported Doom to 3DO in ten weeks on her own in utterly batshit conditions, and mustin, because i’ve got that overclocked remix nostalgia
my friend pokey: so, they’re on tumblr, they write in all lowercase, and their writing style tends to be on the dense and referential side, which ordinarily has all the warning signs of “all pretentiousness, no substance,” right?  (i am not exempt from this, by the way; look at me typing in all lowercase like a scrub.)  but, i’ve reliably gotten interesting insights out of their posts & have been surprised how often i mention their blog to a Friend Whose Aesthetic Tastes I Respect and they’re like “ah! i LOVE that blog!”  also i liked their notes on chrono cross at the end of this post because i literally want to talk about chrono cross every waking moment of my life, come talk to me about chrono cross friends, etc
em reed’s blog is excellent.  i really liked this post about what the phone/gacha game experience is like
auntie pixelante: anna anthropy’s old blog; still not sure why she didn’t archive it somewhere?  but whatever, the wayback machine has your back.  this early review of Gone Home is reasonably representative
tim rogers: i have kind of mixed opinions on him, but i do find something in his work compelling enough that i keep coming back to him, so.
the dude made his initial splash with his extremely long mgs2 review back in the day; there’s a slightly more recent archive too; he also does a lot of sadposting on medium that ranges from “guy in my MFA” to “fuck i can’t believe this dude’s making me feel feelings” in quality, ymmv.  (he also apparently does video reviews now? that are like many hours long? and i am just not the youtube generation so i tapped out on that one bud)
tevis thompson: another critic i have mixed feelings about, but if you’re the kind of dork that enjoys reading stuff that Made A Splash At The Time, and like, nerd subculture histories, you'll have to read his “on videogame reviews” for that reason alone.  i also really dug his 100-word video game reviews series
ludus novus: i haven’t read this dude’s blog in ages, but i liked it a lot when i read it in 2012ish and there’s TONS in the archives
emily short: an IF writer who goes way back.  i haven’t read her blog lately, but the archives / older posts definiely have cool thoughts on the structure of interactive fiction
jonas kyratzes: indie game dev, creator of The Sea Will Claim Everything.  he tends to blog about lefty politics and general arts stuff more frequently than he blogs about games, but he does blog games from time to time.  i liked [1] and [2], for starters.
adam cadre: this guy goes waaay back in the IF scene and has made a bunch of Inform stuff.  i’ve never actually played his games!  but i like his blog a lot (convenient tumblr mirror here).  he almost exclusively blags about books and movies and such these days, but if you dig you can find him talking about games sometimes.  (also, Masterchef Australia, which he loved so much he wrote over fifteen thousand words about it and it’s one of my favorite bizarre blog posts on the internet)
the fool reversed: this blog is focused on LARP game design & issues around that, but i’d say it’s relevant to anyone interested in game-y topics.  as a mostly-outsider to that scene, i thought this was a fun find!
annnd a few last ones:
i haven’t kept up with critical distance in ages, but it used to be a great way to find new game writers, and quite possibly still is, i dunno
while i’ve personally bounced off timber owls a few times, i know some folks who like their writing a lot
hope this helps!!!  happy digging through internet archives and such

Author Interview : underthejoon
Tumblr media
((If anyone wants to make a cool banner for this, please do. I suck at them))
Today is the debut of a new project. Whether it sticks around for long depends on you guys, but for now the plan is to interview one author a month. Creators are often underappreciated on here (or anywhere, for that matter), so this is me doing my part to connect our readers and writers in a meaningful way. Our first interview is with @underthejoon, someone whose work I myself have enjoyed for many years now. If you enjoyed this interview, please be sure to send in authors you’d like me to talk to for future editions, as well as any specific questions you’d like answered (except for questions about updating, that will get you a ban).
Tumblr media
Where can your work be found?
I’m kind of a mess and so while I attempt to cross post, I’m not always great at it. All of my work can be found on my tumblr masterlist but some of my things are on Wattpad and AO3. I’m also underthejoon on both of those platforms.
Links to where readers can donate:
I made a ko-fi account ages ago that I never shared with the public because I’ve always felt guilty. Which is silly, idk why I do. But there it is!
Main bias (and why if you’d like)
So!! I have always been a Namjoon bias. From the very first time I saw them/the very first song I heard I was like yes, you. You are the one, I’m a goner!! He’s so wonderful and unique. He’s very mindful and creative and such a beacon of light to me. Plus, he’s very open with his humanity, if that makes sense? Like he is open about his therapy, his feelings about his perceived shortcomings, his excitement about finding place and things and works of art that inspire him. ALSO THOUGH, in the last year or so I’ve also become a Hoseok bias. He is just so dedicated and loving. He’s insanely talented and vastly underrated, in my opinion. And through all the back breaking work, he is kind through and through. He’s seriously just so warm and makes me really happy.
Hogwarts House :
Okay, the very first time I ever took it I was a slytherin. A few years later, I took it again and got hufflepuff. I like to think I’m a combination of the two but can see myself as more of a puff.
Describe yourself in five words:
Creative, Extroverted, Empathetic, Intuitive, Inquisitive
Current favorite BTS songs:
SO MANY, but I’ll pick 7 for 7 members. Some of these are old as hell but still currently my favorite lol. Love Maze, Love is Not Over, Outro: Her, Dimple, Tomorrow, Like, 2!3!
What was the defining moment when you decided, “Yes! I am going to write the thing!”?
For like fanfic in general? I feel like I had been reading a lot of it after “discovering” k-pop and then after a few months I was just like fuck it, I’m doing it!! I was always super into writing poetry and never thought I would be any good at anything like this but it sounded fun so here we are now.
What do you most enjoy about writing BTS fanfiction specifically?
I think it’s the community of writers. When I started my blog, I met a lot of really amazing supportive writers that I’ve managed to stay friends with and I think that makes a really big difference when you have people that can relate to you and what you’re doing.
Any tropes or au’s that you want to explore later?
I would really like to try writing some sort of supernatural creature fics. I’ve had this werewolf love triangle universe planned out forever that I would like to eventually write. Maybe like a workplace romance?
Which of your fics would you suggest for new readers?
For a completed series i’d say Piece by Piece. My WIP series, Love is Not Over is another one. For a one-shot I’d say, For You. Maybe the sweetness/make it right drabbles too.
Which of your fics is your favorite?
Piece by Piece, no doubt. I really feel proud of it and I have a hard time admitting I like anything I write.
What other fandoms do you wish you had the time to write for?
I used to write for EXO, Got7 and sometimes Monsta X and I miss it sometimes but also, I feel pretty contented in just writing for BTS. There’s a lot of inspiration there and I always felt I was being pulled in too many directions by my readers when I wrote for multiple fandoms.
What are your writing goals for the upcoming year?
I’d like to finish three series I have planned, get caught up on my collab fics and at least finish an outline for my original fiction piece I’ve been putting off!
Which writers do you read religiously?
There’s so many amazing writers on tumblr and I try as hard as I can to keep up with my mutuals when they put stuff out but sometimes it’s hard! I’m gonna be really brief because otherwise my list could go on and on. Okay, first and foremost, Shanna (@kpopfanfictrash) - she’s my best friend and a fabulous, wonderful writer. I would just like to give her a special shout out because not only does she entertain me for hours with her writing, she is very supportive of mine. Other authors I adore as humans and content creators and keep up with most regularly are @floralseokjin and @lamourche !
What is the weirdest thing you’ve had to google in the name of writing?
LOL. Hmm… I’m really boring and feel like I don’t really google that much when writing except maybe like different sex positions when i need a visual or synonyms to certain words. I’ve found some good porn though? Because visuals do help me.
Reader/OC fics within this fandom are often still looked down on and we all have to work hard to make them good enough for readers to look past their reputation. How do you combat the cringe?
TBH, I don’t think that responsibility lies on us as writers. If people don’t like certain types of writing, that’s on them and they can avoid it. Reader insert/oc fics are just as valid a genre as any. I’ve read some of the most beautiful, creative stories on this platform, some of which could be published if names were changed/reader was switched to a named OC. There’s something out there for everyone and it’s all subjective. While I might find certain things super cringey, others love it. To each their own as long as they aren’t shoving it in the faces of the people they’re writing about or being disrespectful, you know?
What is your personal guilty (or not-so-guilty) pleasure trope?
MUTUAL PINING/FRIENDS TO LOVERS. I feel like it’s so basic but I fucking love that trope and I think so many people do it so beautifully it is my absolute favorite.
What is something that you see often in other fanfics that drives you insane?
I think the only thing that really bothers me is when people romanticize abuse or other toxic/triggering topics.
Are any of the boys or ships more difficult for you to write than others?
I think I have the hardest time writing for Jimin and Taehyung but only because I feel I am the most similar to them and for whatever reason that deters me from writing about them often.
We all think we are the most hilarious person there is (even if we won’t admit it), so what is one line or scenario of yours that you like to go back to and giggle over?
Okay this was actually really difficult for me because I don’t write like any humor and don’t think I’m good at LOL. I think my only attempt at humorous writing was The New Guy in which the reader is high off her ass lying on the front lawn and thinking the world is ending then accusing Namjoon of being the Grim Reaper when he comes looking for her.
ONLY IF YOU WANT TO - A scenario as long or short as you want. Maybe 250 words or less. Godzilla is attacking the city and BTS is your rescue crew. How screwed are you?
“D-danger, you say?” Seokjin stutters.
“G-giant lizard monster headed this way?” Hoseok chokes.
The pair exchange glances then turn their focus towards you. Seokjin jerks his head towards the door and you nod in return.
“I hear what you’re saying, gentlemen,” Hoseok says as he stands on shaky legs. He grabs your hand as if to instruct you to do the same.
“And as much as we would LOVE to help you…” His grip is tighter now and you know what comes next.
Before he can finish, Seokjin shoots up from his chair and makes a mad dash towards the door. “Now, now, run, holy shit, NOW!”
Hoseok joins his friend in his haste to evacuate, dragging your nearly petrified form behind him. “No way in hell are we getting anywhere near that thing!”
Seokjin and Hoseok babble horrified nonsense between them but you can’t really decipher much of it. Your heart is pounding in your ears as you replay the name “Godzilla” in your brain.
They wanted you to rescue the city? What were they thinking?
When you reach Seokjin’s car, you have a brief moment of clarity. There are lives at stake, after all. How can you really just abandon the city when it needs a hero?
“What about everybody else?” you ask, voice small and fearful.
“Everybody else?” Seokjin huffs, putting the car in gear. He hardly gives your question a thought before he peels out of the parking lot. “Jungkook can handle everybody else. I raised him on my back, you know? It’s the least he can do!”

Hshshsnansna seeing that ask got me in a HUGE HaaH mood. Like, I went through and read a bunch of asks, and I'd probably go reread the fic itself if I had time. So!! Is there anything about HaaH you've always wanted to share but never had the chance to? Headcanons, worldbuilding, backstory, hidden details- anything at all??
Oh friend… There is so much. I have a Word document that’s like 17k of JUST headcanons and world-building for this fic kghsdkjhdkfg I’m not crazy, I swear.
It took me a while to respond because I had to comb through and find stuff that wasn’t spoilery, but tada, have some Home and a Half Hunk and Shiro (and Matt) headcanons and backstory under the cut!
Also, as for hidden details… Same as the Garrison professors in the show were named for staff members, Neuhahn and Ania are named after IRL contributors to the Voltron animated series–Chris Neuhahn was a producer and Ania O’Hare was the casting director.
And here are some Hunk, Shiro, and sorta Matt headcanons/backstory that shapes their characters in HaaH. (Please note, these headcanons ignore absolutely everything from about season 6 of the actual show and on. I stopped watching Voltron after Season 6 because I just couldn’t handle the writing anymore. T_T)
Hunk:- He’s mixed ethnically, and although his parents are from Samoa, his family tree actually spans many different countries, mostly in Polynesia, including Tonga, but even places as far away as Malaysia.- His parents were converted to the LDS church by Mormon missionaries in Samoa. A few years before Hunk was born, his parents moved to Utah to be closer to the church, so Hunk has only ever been to Samoa once, on a vacation to visit family.- His first name is actually “Hyrum,” and until he met Lance at a Garrison-sponsored summer astro-camp when they were nine, everyone just called him by his real name.- Lance actually meant to call him “Incredible Hulk” at camp, butttt to nine-year-old Lance’s utter mortification, it came out “Incredible Hunk” instead. “Hunk” stuck.- He has a little sister who is even more sensitive than he is.
- Although Hunk’s parents originally agreed on the plan to move to America, after the family arrived, they experienced difficulty fitting in with the very selective Utah culture, and Hunk’s mother grew disenchanted with the church. Employment was difficult to find in their small, rural town, and Hunk’s parents both struggled with being isolated from their extended families. Tensions over whether or not to remain in America, as well as over money, led to some miserable fights that contributed to Hunk’s aversion to conflict when he was younger.
- Hunk sometimes had to play the role of family peacekeeper, working hard to make sure that his youngest sister wouldn’t notice the strain.
- Nevertheless, despite their share of troubles, the family is extremely close-knit. Hunk values his family and their opinions more than anything in any world.
- Which is how he ended up agreeing to go to Garrison, even when he really just wanted to help his parents kickstart the restaurant they were planning to open. His mother felt that working in a family restaurant, even if Hunk is a great cook, would squander his incredible academic and engineering talent (which Hunk thought of as just a hobby), so she begged him to go and continue his schooling instead. Hunk couldn’t say no to his mother, even if the thought of being shipped off into space terrified the living daylights out of him.
- Hunk doesn’t curse and is somewhat uncomfortable with people cursing, at least in front of him. Although Lance used to have a pretty colorful repertoire, when he learned that cursing made Hunk uncomfortable, he immediately adopted all of Hunk’s weird Utah replacements instead. “Holy crow” and “let’s kick some trash” are things they actually say seriously.
- Hunk is always down to cuddle and is never embarrassed by asking for or giving cuddles to anyone. He would 200% cuddle Shiro if he thought Shiro would let him. (Shiro would, in fact, let him.) Hunk’s favorite person on the team to cuddle is actually Keith, because Keith (who was taught to comply by Garrison scientists with all unexpected/unsolicited touch) will just sit obediently for hours letting Hunk hug out all his stress. Hunk knows that something is off about Keith’s behavior, but his leading theory—that Keith allows the hugs because he’s touch-starved—is unfortunately false.
- Hunk knows the lyrics to every Disney song EVER.
- And he’s like a dog with a bone when it comes to secrets. Once he discovers that someone’s keeping something under wraps, he goes a bit crazy with curiosity and cannot stop thinking about what they might be hiding. The rules of privacy go totally out the window when he gets like this, but time and again, Hunk’s adage that it’s always better to tell the truth bears itself out.
  Shiro (and Matt?):
- Shiro is the only member of his immediate family whose first language was not Japanese. His grandparents on both sides immigrated to the US from Japan due to work transfers relatively late in life, when their own children, Shiro’s parents, were already young adults. As the first family child to be born in America, Shiro’s parents strongly emphasized the need to learn English well, which unfortunately resulted in Shiro being pushed away from learning Japanese when he was young. Even though he’s a capable conversationalist now, he’s struggled his whole life with regret over not learning the language when he was young and could have picked it up easier.
- There’s a running joke in his family that he’s actually an ogre in disguise, given that he is much taller than many of his other family members. Tradition demands that the first photo of every holiday gathering is a joke group shot in which Shiro’s posed so his entire head is outside the top frame of the picture.
- Shiro was mercilessly bullied as a child because of his height. The other children frequently suggested that he didn’t belong in their grade because he was too big and that the school must held him back multiple times for being dumb. (Shiro was never held back. In fact, he had excellent grades from kindergarten to the day he graduated from Garrison—and no, not because his parents forced him to study; in fact, throughout his schooling, they often ended up having to force Shiro to go to bed already instead.)
- On top of being teased for his looks, Shiro was naturally shy. He barely spoke, even to his teachers, and would stumble miserably if he was put on the spot in class, contributing further to the rumor that he was stupid.
- Shiro loved learning, but he hated everything that happened in school and didn’t have a single real friend outside of his cousins until he went off to middle school and met Matt Holt in sixth grade.
- Barely two weeks into their first middle school year, and it was already obvious that Matt was the school’s biggest nerd; he’d been bumped up two grades because of his obvious genius and was the textbook definition of an alien conspiracy theorist (It’s not a conspiracy if they’re REAL, guys!) But the strange thing was that no one bullied Matt—he was just so quick on the sarcastic (and biochemical) comebacks that teasing him wasn’t even worth it. Instead, the school’s resident assholes took it out on targets a little less likely to corrode their homework with miniature magnesium bombs—read as, they picked on polite, well-meaning Takashi Shirogane instead.
- Out of pity more than anything else, Matt finally stood up for Shiro one day and ran off the assholes. (It was not, as Mrs. Shirogane insists, with a home-made taser. It was not.) After something like that, well… You sort of feel obligated to befriend a guy, don’tcha?
- Becoming friends with Matt Holt transformed Shiro’s life. Even if Shiro wouldn’t originally speak up for himself, he was ferociously proud and supportive of his first real friend, and learning to be bold for Matt taught Shiro the value and meaning of standing up for not only others, but also himself. Being friends with someone as off-the-cuff and tricky as Matt helped Shiro grow more spontaneous, less self-conscious, and ultimately much more confident—even if, to this day, most of that confidence is still focused on helping others, rather than on being self-assured.
- It was Shiro admiration for Matt’s father, Sam Holt, that led Shiro to take his childhood obsession with military history a step further by actually joining the military. Shiro and Matt enrolled in Garrison together, although Matt was part of the research rather than the combat division.
- Matt was the one who convinced Shiro to get his hair styled in an undercut. It was originally just a dare, but Shiro ended up loving it afterward. The “Undercut Incident,” as it has come to be known in the Shirogane family, was the official straw that broke the camel’s back and resulted in Mrs. Shirogane declaring Matt Holt a “bad influence,” the only impact of which was that Matt had to sneak in through Shiro’s bedroom window instead of coming to the front door when he wanted to hang out.
- Shiro has received two separate Medals of Honor for making dangerous supply deliveries to war-torn countries across the globe, delivering the vital food and medicine that helped save hundreds of lives. He has also been part of several missions to save stranded astronauts from failing international space stations.
- Shiro is actually a giant memelord, but his crushing sense of responsibility keeps him from indulging in quality shitposting in front of anyone he actually knows. He had a ridiculously active secret Vine account before leaving on the Kerberos mission. His snaps are legendary. Deep down, Shiro dreads the inevitable day someone connects him with his cringey social media accounts.
- Literally the worst at adulting. His mom still filled out his tax forms for him and booked his dentist appointments. He has no idea what the hell he’s doing leading Team Voltron when he can’t even remember which of his clothes are machine-washable and which aren’t.
- When they were in their third year at Garrison, Matt conned Shiro into volunteering as a camp counselor for Garrison’s summer astrocamp program, even though Shiro had minimal understanding of how to take care of children and mostly just BS’d his way through, hoping that none of his campers had anything close to a serious issue.
- He won “best camp counselor” the very first year he volunteered. Mostly because Lance cheated and voted for him 23 times, but still.

Going in blind: Watching season 2 for the first time. Random thoughts.
Tumblr media
Huh. Only 7 episodes. Not complaining necessarily. For series with an ongoing plot I've definitely become more in favor with their seasons only having as many episodes as they need rather than them having to stretch themselves out to full up a certain number of episodes, which can lead to padding and just bad character moments.
Episode 1: Jeez. Catra visiting Shadow Weaver's cell just to rub her success in her face and verbally abuse her back for once. It's like a twisted version of Zuko and Ozai from ATLA. Catra's upbringing under her was abusive but this is far from a healthy way for her to deal with it. She's basically deliberately swimming in her resentment.
Episode 2: It's not that I'm rooting for her but by-golly was it fun to watch Catra act like just the absolute worst she could while she was Glimmer and Bow's captive.
I touched on this in season 1 but part of the drama of the heroes feeling guilt over leaving Entrapta behind is kind of lost on me a bit simply because it was her own fault it happened. She deliberately went back into the purge room because of her machine obsession, which then closed on her and erupted in flames. It was more than reasonable to assume she was dead and no one but her was to blame, so I'm not really able to be invested in their guilt over it.
That said, weirdly enough I do like that her "abandonment" doesn't seem to be even a blip on the radar for Entrapta herself. She hasn't joined the horde because she resents the heroes or felt left behind, she simply is so obsessed with machines and experimentation that she'll be on the side of whoever lets her do the most of that. Like, it's selfish and irresponsible but it's very in-character and I'd far rather have a traitor motivation be based in that over something stupid like a misunderstanding.
Episode 3: I love the mental image of Shadow Weaver thinking up princess-themed ghost stories to tell Adora as a child.
So, if the previous She-Ra Mara separated Eternia from the other realms/planets/whatever she did and that's what cut off the She-Ra line for 1000 years, I'm guessing Hordak may be from the time before that happened, thus his drive to create portals and calling Eternia a backwards world. Either he's naturally long-lived or his technology is extending his life.
Episode 4: You know, you could maybe argue it was vague enough that it could be taken other ways but I'm definitely getting some vibes here that Scorpia is crushing on Catra. She literally refers to the two of them as soulmates at one point. I know she says she's trying to be friends but this feels a level beyond that.
Fun little reference to the original She-Ra cartoon thrown in there (and maybe Cowboy Bebop...? James Bond...? What was Glimmer's art style supposed to be?). I like how it is more like just playful ribbing than anything outright dumping on the original. Again, I've never seen original She-Ra but whenever remakes/adaptations go out of their way to trash to the original I always kind of wonder why they bothered doing an adaptation if the original is just that bad? Also, I was having trouble sleeping so it was about 2am when I watched this episode and the very Eartha Kitt Catwoman Catra made it very difficult for me not to lose my **** and stay quiet. With how much of a contrast that version is from the one in this series, that was hilarious. Bonus note, it's a nice touch that Frosta's version of Catra is a pretty crasher in that sweet suit, since that's the only impression of Catra she's ever had.
Adora being a chosen one is definitely elevated up simply by how much the pressure of what she's supposed to be is getting to her. I'm likely going to keep making Avatar The Last Airbender comparisons throughout the series but that's partly because I went into this series figuring it'd be at least structured similar to ATLA (season 1 being more episodic and a little more kid-friendly as it builds up the world before getting more serious later). Adora and Aang are interesting to compare here. Aang's worries early on were less apparent because he was more in-denial/choosing not to think about his problems that much, which fit with his character as a free-spirited Air Nomad. While Adora is much more military-minded. She can't keep herself from thinking about her problems and trying to prepare for the worst-case scenario. And jeez, that idea of who/how Catra is in her mind. Not only beating her but making her watch as she takes everything she cares about away. Not Shadow Weaver, not Lord Hordak, but Catra. That whole Lion King Mufasa/Scar moment between them in episode 11 and their fight in the S1 finale really did a number on her mental image of her old friend. Not reasonably so.
Minor note: I'm sure I'm the only one who got this impression but by the look of it, the way the robot's eye moved, and the music, after getting the soda spilled on it that little spybot gained sentience for half a second and then immediately died. It was so darkly comedic I had to laugh.
Episode 5: So that red disc is basically She-Ra's Red Kryptonite, having an effect on the mind rather than the body. The drunk Adora joke doesn't really do it for me but it did get some nice interactions going between Scorpia and Sea Hawk, two characters I certainly wasn't expecting to bond. I did really like Catra's panic when berserker She-Ra nearly beheads her. The implication is that is Adora really wanted to kill her Catra would already probably be dead. It's a thing I like about powerhouse characters like Superman or Aang, who could just demolish everything around them and don't simply because they're a good person...which in turn makes them the scariest person on the planet when they're well and truly ticked off. I'm not going to lie, I do kind of want to see a She-Ra version of Aang when Appa was stolen or when Superman fought The Elite.
Also, Catra's line of "I have control over Adora. I'm not giving that up for anything.". There's a lot to read into there.
Episode 6: I guess my prediction was sort of right. Shadow Weaver became basically a magic parasite and while it did increase the power she's capable of the implication seems to be that she needs a constant fix of magic to keep herself going, thus her attachment to the Black Garnet.
Have we seen Micah before? Given how long ago the flashback seems set, the fact that Shadow Weaver didn't kill him and thus he probably becomes someone important later in life, I'm guessing he's Glimmer's dad and the queen's late husband, since I think he's the only important male character whose face we haven't seen yet. Also, he's voice by Ezra from Star Wars Rebels and that cracks me up for some reason. It's the exact same voice and a relatively similar character.
I compared Catra and Shadow Weaver with a kind of twisted version of Zuko and Ozai and that definitely still fits here. Both Catra and Zuko confront their parent and call them out for the inexcusable abuse they put them through but while that moment was the start of Zuko's upwards journey this and SW's betrayal seems like it's going to cause Catra to spiral even further. Makes sense why Adora leaving affected her so much. She's probably the only one Catra's ever had that she could consistently trust and rely on, even if she did somewhat resent her.
Not surprised Hordak is getting along with Entrapta. She's not socially aware enough to be scared or intimidated by him, so she'll speak frankly, and since all she wants to talk about is the machines, experiments, and how they could get them to work Hordak probably doesn't take much issue with that. She's producing results, which is what he cares about, thus also why Shadow Weaver and Catra started losing favor with him. I wonder if Catra is going through imposter syndrome? Shadow Weaver had that line that Entrapta earned her place next to Hordak and, if you think about it, Catra hasn't really "earned" anything. We saw that she didn't really take her training or studies that seriously, showing up late to combat practice and even getting partial credit for what Adora beat. She wasn't promoted to Force Captain because of her own abilities but because Adora had defected when she was supposed to get that title. She's come close to a few victories but never really had any except for Glimmer and Bow's kidnapping...whom she then basically let escape when she returned Adora's sword to her. She doesn't have the slightest clue how the horde's bureaucracy works when trying to get things done, like simply getting troops armor. Given how much better than her Adora always was and how little she herself has to her name, I wonder is subconsciously Catra believes she doesn't deserve her current position and thus why she's fretting so much over trying to prove herself.
Episode 7: Am I mistaken or did Bow's parents say that he's the youngest of TWELVE siblings? I was going to ask whether Bow was adopted or if his dad's used a surrogate or if maybe there's even just simply magic in She-Ra's world that allows two people of the same sex to have a child together but now I'm just focused on the 12 kids thing. I get nervous just imagining myself having more than one. You should see me when I'm with two cats. I have to pet both of them because I'd feel like I'd be making one feel left out and like the other is the favorite. I'm a mess with kids.
The dad with dreadlocks (Lance?), his design looked familiar to me and I finally realized it reminded me a of a fanart design for a human Grim from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Very different voices between those two characters though.
I wonder if there's any significance to the robot protecting the crystal having the same design as those in the artic in episode 5? Obviously both have the connection to the First Ones but the robot in the forest who was also protecting First Ones' tech had a more insect-like design over these more worm/Graboid ones.
I'm kind of curious what Hordak would have done if Catra had told the truth. Given his interactions with her and Shadow Weaver he doesn't seem like the time to tolerate failure but I suppose the implication here is that he at least would respect those who own up to their failures. Or I suppose more simply he was just testing to see if she would lie to him and since she did there's little merit in keeping her in a position of authority anymore where she could lie about important things again.
Season 2 verdict: Still enjoying it. Another person on this reddit recommended I view seasons 2 and 3 as one since they are basically just one season split in two. I was going to do that but this ended up longer than I thought I would, so I'll just do 2 and 3 separate to keep them semi-organized and easier to read.
I think overall Catra is my favorite character since she has the most interesting backstory, interactions, and just general path through the story out of everyone. She's like Pearl from Steven Universe or, well, Zuko. There's just so much baggage there that she's trying and kind of failing to deal with. I'm always invested in whatever's happening when she's onscreen. Hordak so far is a good big boss villain for Adora to face but Catra is a good archenemy for her.

Chapter 30
During the intermission, the entire Pit was abuzz with excitement and anticipation.  Two undefeated fighters, two Elites, two former champions, two true warriors, were only a few minutes away from competing against each other for the first time ever.  Olcán Farrell versus Connor Gladiusdei was a fight that every person in the Order that followed the tournament had speculated about, anticipated, and hoped would happen for a very long time.
The anticipation was so prevalent that even Bledsoe could feel it.  Thinking back to the other fights she’d witnessed, she could tell why Tadeas had said that missing the tournament was out of the question.  Now that he and the rest of the Order were going to have their dream fight, Bledsoe was caught up in it as well and excited to see who would hoist the championship belt above his head.
After the third round, the other fourteen fighters had left the area by the cage where they’d been sitting, with their nameplates in hand, and joined the rest of the crowd to watch the final fight.  The refreshment stands had been packed up as well.  All eyes and the complete focus of everyone in attendance were completely focused on the cage and the final fight.
“You seem to have it out for my bro,” Tadeas remarked to Bledsoe, “maybe you’d care to set a wager on this fight.”
“What did you have in mind?” Bledsoe asked in a slightly flirtatious manner very uncharacteristic of her.
“How about this,” Tadeas answered, “if Olcán wins then you have to give me a personal tour of Washington, D.C.”
“And what do I get when Connor kicks his ass?” Bledsoe asked coyly.
“That,” Tadeas answered, “I leave to you.”
“Hmm,” Bledsoe cooed biting her bottom lip.  A roar erupted from the crowd before she could answer.  Tadeas and Bledsoe saw Master Lee entering the cage.
“I’ll have to get back to you,” Bledsoe said quickly before turning her complete attention to what would in a few moments become the site of a battle whose legendary status would rival Agincourt.
“Ladies and gentlemen!” Master Lee announced, “Once again, we have been witness to the greatest display of unarmed combat the world has to offer!  Before we proceed to the final bout of the evening!  I ask that we show appreciation for all those who have participated!”
Master Lee applauded and was quickly joined by a standing ovation from all in attendance.  Dieter and the thirteen other fighters stood up and graciously accepted the applause before sitting back down.
“Now,” Master Lee thundered bringing back the anticipation, “without further delay, I present the final bout of the evening!”
Master Lee stepped back amid a thunderous ovation.  To Bledsoe’s surprise, music began playing over some speakers hanging on the walls.  Bledsoe saw Olcán making his way to the cage down a ramp that started from a room in the back of The Pit as a live recording of Iron Maiden’s “The Mercenary” echoed through the arena bringing the crowd to its feet amid chants of “BAY-EUX!  BAY-EUX! BAY-EUX!  BAY-EUX!”.
Olcán’s hands were freshly wrapped and he already wore his gloves.  He was dressed in black shorts and a green t-shirt with “Fightin’ Irish” written across the front.  O’Connell walked just behind Olcán as he advanced with purpose, mouthing the words “show them no fear, show them no pain” as Bruce Dickinson belted them out.  He stopped just in front of the cage and took off his shirt before entering and taking a lap around it before stopping back at the door to share a few words with O’Connell.
Bledsoe watched the interaction between the two men.  She couldn’t tell what they were saying over the music, but she could tell by their actions that it was a tender exchange.  After a few moments, O’Connell kissed Olcán on his forehead and gave him a hard pat on the back.
“This is different,” Bledsoe commented to Tadeas.
“Yeah,” Tadeas replied with a smile, “for the final match Master Lee allows each participant a more elaborate entrance.  They get to pick entrance music, have someone escort them to the cage, and after they’re both inside Master Lee gives each fighter a personal introduction.”
“Why are so many people chanting ‘Bayeux’ for him,” Bledsoe asked as the chanting and music continued.
“Do you know what the Bayeux Tapestry is?” Tadeas asked.
“Of course I know what the Bayeux Tapestry is,” Bledose answered, “it’s the most famous artwork from the Medieval period in the world.”
“Well,” Tadeas responded, “I told you about Olcán’s scars and how they effectively tell the story of his life.  People took to calling him Bayeux because his body is like a tapestry that tells the story of his missions.”  Bledsoe nodded in understanding and took another look at Olcán’s scarred body and found herself imagining what event each portion of the living tapestry depicted.
“I didn’t peg Olcán as a fan of this kind of music.” Bledsoe said after a few moments.
“He’s a huge fan,” Tadeas answered, “This is his favorite song.  He even has an original vinyl copy of the Powerslave album.  He and Odin used to go to Iron Maiden concerts together before Odin got married.  They were in the pit at the concert where this was recorded.”
“You didn’t go with him?” Bledsoe asked slightly surprised.
“Nah,” Tadeas responded, “not really my style.  I prefer the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.”
Inside, Bledsoe marveled at how cultured Tadeas was.  It seemed that he couldn’t get any better, and Bledsoe fervently hoped that there would be a second date between the two of them in the near future.  A few moments later, one song ended and a new one began.
Shinedown’s “Diamond Eyes” now came out over the speakers.  After the music had been playing for 45 seconds, Bledsoe could see a muscular figure standing still in front of the entrance area.  Three seconds later, a very energetic Connor Gladiusdei sporting a red mask with large black circles around the eyes and with his arms raised in the air, made his way to the cage.  His brother Duncan followed close behind him, and now that Bledsoe could see Duncan’s face she definitely saw a family resemblance between the two of them.  They looked almost identical except for Duncan being a little taller and having longer hair.
The cheers of the crowd were a little louder for Connor than they had been for Olcán, mainly due to the amorous shrieks of a myriad of female admirers.
“What’s with the mask?” Bledsoe asked.
“Oh,” Tadeas answered rolling his eyes, “Deadpool is his favorite superhero.”
Not knowing much about comic books beyond any that her brothers brought home or collected, Bledsoe shrugged off Tadeas’s comment and asked about something she’d noticed from the moment she first saw Connor.
“He always seems so calm,” Bledsoe remarked to Tadeas, “is that confidence or ego?”
“You know that guy you hate because he succeeds at everything without seeming to try?” Tadeas asked earning a nod from Bledsoe as she thought of her brothers, Agent Cruz, and a few other people she knew from work.  “Well, Connor is that…on Crack.  The guy moved through Knight training and all the necessary steps to become an Elite like it was nothing.  And he always does it with that dang smile on his face and a happy-go-lucky attitude.  In my opinion it’s confidence, and he’s certainly earned the right to have it.”
Connor entered the cage and moved around it a few times before stopping in the corner opposite Olcán.  He then removed his mask, which was accompanied by increasing from his female admirers, and threw it into the group of Gifted Ones.
After a borderline ferocious rush for it that Bledsoe had only ever seen during the bouquet tosses at her brothers’ weddings, and a struggle that caused Bledsoe’s eyes to widen in surprise as the mask floated downward on the air, the mask was caught by Katrina.  With her prize in hand, Katrina quickly sat back down and said a few sharp words to a few other Gifted Ones that attempted to wrench it from her.
Bledsoe couldn’t tell what Katrina said.  But judging from the way any Gifted Ones close to her moved back, Bledsoe deduced that Katrina’s words were something in the way of “back off”.
The continued cheering of the crowd was only silenced by Master Lee moving to the center of the cage and holding one of his hands into the air.
“It is now my privilege,” Master Lee began, “to introduce the final fight of this Tournament!  Introducing first, the fighter standing to my right!  He is a Boxer and Order Fighting Method specialist!  He is the youngest ever Elite, and is undefeated in Tournament competition!  Born in Waterford, Ireland!  Ladies and gentlemen!  Olcán Farrell!”
The crowd erupted into a huge cheer, Bledsoe even offering a polite applause, as Olcán walked forward and raised his arm to the crowd before returning to his corner.  The cheers subsided when Master Lee again returned to the center of the cage.
“And his opponent, the fighter to my left!” The cheers already started, showing Connor to clearly be the fan favorite.  “He is an Order Fighting Method specialist!  The quickest graduate of the Tenet system!  Also undefeated in Tournament competition!  Born here in the Monastery, the latest in the prestigious Gladiusdei family line!  Ladies and gentlemen!  Connor Gladiusdei!”
Connor, with his usual smile across his face, stepped out of his corner and raised both arms in the air.  It was evident that he enjoyed the spotlight, and he took his time soaking it in.  The cheers for Connor were much louder and longer than they had been for Olcán, and Connor accentuated the attention he was receiving by blowing a kiss to the group of Gifted Ones seated nearby.
Bledsoe smiled, she liked Connor and was hoping to see him pulverize Olcán.  Connor soaked up the applause for a few more moments before taking a bow and returning to his corner.  Master Lee stepped into the center where Connor and Olcán now faced each other with only Master Lee himself between them.
Olcán stared straight ahead at his opponent, never blinking or varying from his customary look of firm determination.  Connor returned the stare, but with his customary confident smile.  Both men were giving different looks that conveyed intimidation, but at the same time they couldn’t have been more different.
Master Lee finished his instructions.  Connor held out his fists and Olcán, in a move of classy sportsmanship, brought his own out in front of him.  The two fighters took turns bringing their fists down on top of those of their opponent before touching the fronts of them together and separating for their respective corners.
The excitement of the crowd was at a boiling point, Bledsoe feeling some of it inside as well.  Connor and Olcán, both determined to have their arm raised in victory, stood opposite each other already in fighting stances and only awaiting the go ahead from Master Lee.
Master Lee moved to the center and raised his arm.  The cheers only increased as Master Lee deliberately waited a few moments to perform the motion that would unleash what promised to be the highlight of the evening.  A few moments later, Master Lee’s arm dropped and the crowd erupted into a frenzy of excitement.
Olcán and Connor both immediately moved to the center of the cage and tested each other by throwing a series of punches, kicks, elbows, and knees.  The result of which being mainly a string of blocks and counters.  Neither one of them was expecting a knockout, instead wanting to test the Elite they were fighting and gauge how hard their opponent could strike.
They both had ample opportunity to determine that as each of them landed multiple blows.  Connor was careful to defend against Olcán’s punches, the image of what he’d done to Dieter’s ribcage still fresh in his mind.  Olcán was also being careful to not get too ambitious too soon in the fight and paced himself.
The first slipup was done by Connor when he went for a high kick only to have it blocked hard by Olcán.  Olcán jumped on the opportunity and let loose with a brilliant combination of punches to Connor’s torso and head.  The crowd rose to its feet thinking that the fight could be over a lot sooner than they’d anticipated as Olcán forced Connor back against the cage.
When Connor hit the back however, he used the small bit of momentum he got to bring his arms up quicker than Olcán could react and lock his hands behind his head.  “My turn” Connor said as his usual smile returned and he began to barrage Olcán with hard and targeted knees.  Soon, Olcán had fresh bruises and shiners to match the ones he had given Connor as the crowd roared its approval.
Olcán backed up and did his best to counter the precarious situation in which he found himself.  He was able to slow down Connor’s momentum and hit him hard in the ribs with a few strong punches.  As Connor winced from the pain, Olcán ducked under Connor’s arms and hit him with a knee to the chest followed instantly by a kick to the stomach.  Far from daunted, Connor smiled at Olcán and waved him forward.
Olcán took Connor up on his invitation and approached.  The two of them, both bruised and bloody by this point, exchanged strikes once again.  This continued until Connor decided to take the fight to the ground and brought Olcán down.  What followed was a display of chain wrestling that would have made the greatest Olympic wrestlers jealous.
Every time either one of them attempted to submit the other, they were met with a perfect counter and an attempt by their opponent to take control.  The back and forth between them was flawless, bringing the crowd to their feet and even making experienced wrestlers like Dieter stand in awe.
Olcán and Connor, neither one of them wanting to back down and experience the taste of defeat, gave everything they had and then some even with the earliest stages of fatigue beginning to set in.  Olcán attempted to lock Connor’s arm between his legs, the result being Connor quickly rolling over and sitting on top of Olcán with a knee on either side of him.  After taking a few punches to the face, Olcán managed to block a punch and move under one of Connor’s legs.  Connor responded by maintaining a grip on one of Olcán’s arms and wrapping his legs around Olcán’s head to cut off his airflow.
In an impressive show of strength, Olcán stood up with Connor still locking in the hold and prepared to slam him down.  But Connor released the hold as Olcán lifted him up and landed on his feet.  The pause in action allowed Connor to land a kick to the body and a combination of three punches to Olcán’s head.
As a testament to his resilience and will to win, Olcán fired back with a few hard punches to Connor’s body before following up with more combinations.  They’d been fighting for almost twenty minutes, giving the crowd everything they’d expected and more, and it was starting to show as both of them breathed heavily and began moving slower.  It was coming down to a question of resilience and desire.
Connor’s characteristic smile was long gone and now replaced with a look of intensity that bordered on outright contempt for his opponent.  Connor’s sentiments were mirrored by his opponent.  Blood spatters decorated much of the cage floor, and both faces had donned a crimson mask accentuated with patches of black and blue.
The two of them stood facing each other.  Neither one of them could see straight, and both were now effectively running on fumes.  They slowly moved toward each other with their guards up.  Olcán threw a punch, Connor ducked under it and moved to Olcán’s side.  He then wrapped his arms around him, lifted him up to where his feet were barely off the ground, and slammed him to the ground.  As he positioned himself on top of Olcán, Olcán brought his legs around Connor’s neck.
Connor quickly brought one of his arms between his neck and Olcán’s leg and threw the leg off.  Olcán used the momentum from Connor’s throw and the last energy he had to get to his feet.  As Connor also got to his feet Olcán, in an uncharacteristic move, used what energy he had left to jump in the air and turn his body around as he extended his leg.
Connor was able to get to his feet and, although in disbelief at what Olcán was doing, had the presence of mind to counter.  As Olcán’s heel hit Connor full on in the side of the head, Connor brought the leg opposite where Olcán hit him with all his energy into the side of Olcán’s head.  As a result, Connor spun around before falling to the ground, and Olcán dropped like a rock flat onto his back.
Rather than a thunderous cheer, the crowd went silent.  Master Lee ran and knelt beside both fighters, and after a few moments stepped back.
“What’s going on?!” Bledsoe asked frantically.  “Is the fight over?!”
“Oh man,” Tadeas said almost in wonder, “this has never happened before!  If both fighters are out, then the first one that can get to his feet and be responsive wins.  If they’re both out for two minutes, then it’s a no-contest.”
Bledsoe, along with the others in attendance, watched intently looking for any sign of life from the two fighters.  The suspense was almost overwhelming as the climax of the evening now awaited its conclusion.
“When Connor gets up first,” Bledsoe said quickly to Tadeas, “you have to arrange a private lesson for me with Master Lee.”
“Deal,” Tadeas replied, “but I’m sure you’re going to owe me a tour of D.C. any moment now.”
After about one minute of no activity from either fighter, Olcán began to stir amid cheers from the crowd and renewed urging on behalf of both fighters.  Connor began showing signs of life as well when Olcán attempted to sit up.  They lifted themselves up on their hands.  Olcán shook his head a few times while Connor looked down and tapped his a few times with his hands.
As though it were choreographed, both of them simultaneously crawled to the nearest fenced portion of the cage, attempting to pull themselves up.  Being completely punch-drunk, they both had to feel the fence trying to find places to grip.  Within seconds of each other, they both got to their feet and pressed against the fence with their palms before leaning against it.
Neither one of them wanted to lose, but they knew they would fall to the ground and not be able to get back up on their own power if they pressed off too soon.  Master Lee looked over at each one of them, and then walked to where he was an equal distance from both fighters.
“They have to walk up to him,” Tadeas said to Bledsoe, “correctly say how many fingers he holds up, and then tell him that they can continue.”
The entire crowd was now watching Olcán and Connor to see if there would be a victor to the fight.  The silence was almost deafening.
With all the energy they had left, Olcán and Connor took the five steps that separated them from the man who had been instrumental in them acquiring their skills in unarmed combat.  Each step was like trying to lift 300 pounds with one arm, but they willed themselves on and did the best they could to walk straight.
They simultaneously reached Master Lee.  He extended a hand toward each of them, he held up three fingers on the hand facing Olcán and five facing Connor.  Both of them could be heard to give the correct number.  The silence of the crowd allowed everyone to hear the next words that came out of the fighters’ mouths.
“Master…I am able…to continue.”
Master Lee stepped back and raised and dropped his arm once again, signaling for the fight to continue.  It was obvious that both Olcán and Connor were completely spent, how they were continuing was anybody’s guess.  Pride and desire fueled them as they tried to raise their hands and advance towards each other.  They each took two steps and then collapsed.
Neither one of them moved as they remained on the floor.  Master Lee quickly walked over to them and raised Olcán’s arm, which dropped after he let go.  He repeated the same process with Connor, then stood up and waved his arms back and forth signaling a stop to the bout.
A cheer the likes of which had never been heard before then erupted from all present.  Applause and shouts of praise echoed throughout the Pit as Master Lee raised Olcán and Connor’s arms.
A couple of Gifted Ones came in to attend to the fallen fighters.  Katrina immediately ran in and attended Connor while a Gifted One Bledsoe hadn’t met saw to Olcán.  With a strength that surprised Bledsoe, the Gifted Ones dragged their respective fighter to the nearest side of the cage and placed their backs against it.
The Gifted Ones attended to the fighters long enough for them to be well enough to use the fence to get to their feet and hobble to the center of the cage where Master Lee awaited.  He once again raised one of each of their arms to renewed cheers from the crowd.
The fighters faced each other, but could only really turn their faces in the direction of their opponent while moving so that the eyes they could see out of were facing them.
They gave knowing glances to each other and slowly moved their fists together before staggering to the wall and slowly sitting down against it once again.
“Wow,” Bledsoe managed to get out after a few moments, “that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!”
“Yeah, me too” Tadeas said in response, “and from the sound of things it looks like everyone else here can say the same!  We’ve never had a draw before!”
The crowd continued to cheer as the Gifted Ones attended the fighters and their energy completely returned.  Connor’s eyes adjusted to the sight of the woman staring down at him.  She playfully brought his mask out from inside her gown where she’d stashed it and playfully spun it around on her hand.  She smiled down at Connor, who returned the gesture as the battle damage adorning his face and the rest of his body subsided.
After a few minutes, Olcán was healed enough to get back on his feet and make his way back to the center of the cage where Master Lee, now holding the coveted championship belt, awaited.  Master Lee held the belt as Olcán walked up and stood next to him.  Connor was also able to stand but was unsure of what to do for a few moments before Master Lee waved him forward and he stood next to him with Olcán on the other side.
“For the first time in history,” Master Lee boomed as he accepted the nameplates and a screwdriver from the Gifted One beside him, “The winners, of this tournament!  Olcán Farrell and Connor Gladiusdei!”
With that, he screwed one side of each nameplate onto the belt letting them drift down so that one plate dangled from each side, and presented one strap of the belt to each of the champions as the crowd roared their approval.  Then, in a move unexpected by Bledsoe and many others in attendance, Olcán released the strap he held and moved to Connor’s side before raising his hand that held the belt.
Connor and Olcán exchanged knowing nods as Olcán continued to hold up Connor’s arm, allowing him to soak up the applause that he enjoyed so much.  Connor returned the favor by putting the belt to Olcán’s chest and raising the arm that Olcán instinctively brought up to grip it.  The moment of mutual respect ended when O’Connell entered the cage and gave Olcán a big hug which was quickly returned.
The entire crowd was on their feet and showering Olcán and Connor with a monumental ovation.  Tadeas got on his feet and turned to Bledsoe.
“Well, looks like we both won,” he said with a smile, “stay here for a little bit please.  I’ll be right back.”
“Where are you going?” Bledsoe asked slightly disappointed.
“I have to give my brother his due respect,” Tadeas answered, “don’t worry, I won’t be long.”  Bledsoe understood and gave Tadeas an affirming nod.
“And I need to talk to Master Lee about a private lesson tomorrow with our special guest.”  Bledsoe was speechless as the realization that she was going to get to study with one of her idols dawned on her.  Tadeas gave her a smile and ran into the cage.
Within moments, O’Connell and Odin had hoisted Olcán onto their shoulders.  Olcán held the belt up over his head as the procession made its rounds.  Connor stepped back to let Olcán’s supporters enjoy the moment.
Bledsoe looked on impressed with all she’d seen.  She knew that Master Lee spoke the truth when he said that the tournament was the height of excellence in unarmed combat.  She was slightly embarrassed to find that her gaze reverted back to Tadeas.
Eventually, Olcán was brought back down.  Only one last thing remained, O’Connell picked up a professional-looking camera he’d left beside the door of the cage when he’d entered.
“Little Wolf,” O’Connell said with a grin, “will you please do an old man the honor of commemorating the greatest event of his life?”
Olcán, the belt now resting on his shoulder, nodded and moved to where O’Connell stood with Odin and Tadeas.  O’Connell asked Connor if he wouldn’t mind taking the picture, and he accepted.  As Duncan and Connor’s other family members and several friends waited outside the cage for their own celebration, Connor took a few pictures, and the four men in them had nothing but happiness across their features.
