via Politics – FiveThirtyEight
For the second time in 2018, voters will go to the polls to replace a Republican congressman who resigned. But Tuesday’s special election in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District — which Rep. Trent Franks vacated in December after reportedly offering one of his staffers $5 million to carry his child — is expected to have a very different outcome from last month’s Democratic upset in Pennsylvania’s 18th District. Prominent nonpartisan handicappers all rate the race between Republican Debbie Lesko and Democrat Hiral Tipirneni as “Likely Republican” — but in terms of reading the tea leaves for November, the winning margin will matter more than the outcome.
1. The district
Arcing through the suburbs northwest of Phoenix, including Surprise, Peoria and Litchfield Park, Arizona’s 8th District is usually a Republican stronghold. According to Daily Kos Elections, President Trump carried it 58 to 37 percent in 2016; Mitt Romney won it 62 to 37 percent in 2012. According to FiveThirtyEight’s preferred method for calculating a district’s default partisanship — we call it a district’s “partisan lean”1 — the 8th District is 25 percentage points more Republican-leaning than the nation as a whole.
That’s comparable to Pennsylvania’s 18th District and most other jurisdictions that have hosted special congressional elections since Trump took office. But, as regular readers of this site know, that hasn’t stopped Democrats from being competitive in — and even winning — many of those races.
Democratic overperformance in federal special elections
Year Date Seat Partisan Lean Vote Margin Dem. Partisan lean is the average difference between how the constituency voted and how the country voted overall in the last two presidential elections, with 2016 weighted 75 percent and 2012 weighted 25 percent.
* Results are from the all-party primary, which included multiple Democratic candidates; results reflect the total vote share for all Democratic candidates combined.
Sources: Daily Kos Elections, secretaries of state
The margins in federal special elections since Trump’s inauguration have been an average of 17 points more favorable to Democrats than pure partisanship would lead us to expect. Another Democratic overperformance is likely on Tuesday — practically no one thinks Lesko is going to defeat Tipirneni by 25 points or more. But in order for Tipirneni to win outright, she’d not only need to do better than the Democrats’ average overperformance so far, but also better than their overperformance in Pennsylvania.
That’s unlikely. Arizona’s 8th District is especially infertile ground for Democrats. Unlike Pennsylvania’s 18th District, it has no historical tradition of Democratic support. (In fact, quite the contrary — the area is known for its devotion to controversial former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.) Whereas southwestern Pennsylvania had elected a Democrat to Congress as recently as 2000, the West Valley (as this part of Arizona is known) hasn’t done so since 1980.2 And while registered Democrats represent a plurality of voters in Pennsylvania’s 18th District, registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats 41 to 24 percent among active voters in Arizona’s 8th.
The district’s demographics might be especially bad for Democrats in a low-turnout special election. Arizona Democrats lean on non-white voters, especially Latinos, for a large share of their support, but people of color have historically been among the least likely people to vote in off-year elections. That makes districts like Arizona’s 8th (which is 30 percent non-white, including 19 percent Latino) more vulnerable to a Democratic drop-off in special and midterm elections.
Even worse for Democrats, Arizona’s 8th District is also home to lots of older voters — a demographic that’s both heavily Republican and dutiful about casting ballots even in off-year elections. The West Valley is considered one of the best places in the country to retire, and more than 24 percent of 8th District residents are 62 years old or older. Indeed, predominantly white retirement communities such as Sun City are a distinguishing feature of this district.
2. The polling
The polling average so far (Lesko 47 percent, Tipirneni 44 percent) suggests a close race, but those numbers come with a mountain of question marks. Two of the three public polls were conducted by partisan firms: Perhaps predictably, the Republican one showed a 10-point Lesko lead, while the Democratic one showed a tied race. That combination implies that the true result is somewhere in the middle. On the other hand, the only nonpartisan poll agreed with the Democratic assessment that the race is statistically tied. However, for this poll to be correct, left-leaning demographics would have to constitute an unusually high share of the electorate; the poll’s sample was far younger and better educated than district averages. Turnout could swing that way, but Democrats shouldn’t hold their breath.
Latest polls of the special election in Arizona’s 8th District
Dates Pollster Lesko Tipirneni April 14–16 Lake Research Partners (D) 44% 44% April 12–15 Emerson College 45 46 April 10 OH Predictive Insights (R) 53 43 Average 47 44
In addition to the public polls for which we have precise numbers, internal Republican polls reportedly put Lesko ahead by “high single digits or double digits.” Considering that House special election polls come with very wide margins of error, any of the outcomes shown by any of these polls — from a narrow Tipirneni win to a Lesko rout — is plausible.
3. The players
Unlike in Pennsylvania, the candidates in Arizona’s 8th District are about evenly matched in terms of quality and fundraising. Lesko represented much of Arizona’s 8th in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015 and in the state Senate from 2015 until earlier this year, earning the gratitude of her retiree-heavy constituents when she pushed a bill to allow people to drive golf carts alongside regular traffic. Tipirneni is a political neophyte, but she has a good story to tell as an Indian immigrant who became a doctor and cancer researcher.
Neither candidate is an ideological outlier; both champion their party’s usual positions on issues like health care, taxes and guns — although embracing the usual Democratic positions may make Tipirneni an outlier in such a conservative district, which would work to Lesko’s advantage. Both have also weathered mini-scandals: In January, Lesko transferred $50,000 from her state campaign account to a federal PAC working to elect her to Congress, which may violate rules forbidding candidates from coordinating with PACs. Tipirneni has had to deny that a malpractice lawsuit she settled in 2006 was the reason she ended her career as an ER doctor just months later.
On the rubber-chicken circuit, the Democrat has raised the most money, but Republican outside groups are negating that advantage. As of early April, Tipirneni had raised a total of $741,000 and spent $616,000 of it; Lesko had raised $564,000 and spent $511,000. But, starting shortly after the party’s loss in Pennsylvania, GOP outside groups began directing a steady stream of campaign spending to Arizona’s 8th District, adding up to more than $1 million. That may seem like a lot for a supposedly uncompetitive race, but it’s a fraction of the $10.7 million in soft money Republicans anxiously poured into Pennsylvania. An ounce of prevention, they likely reason, is worth a pound of cure. For their part, liberal groups are getting involved in the race only indirectly, if at all.
4. The actual votes
Tuesday may be Election Day, but even as you read this preview, most — some estimates say as many as 80 percent — of the votes in the contest have already been cast. Arizona has a generous early-voting period (and it is well used — we estimate that more than 60 percent of votes in the 2016 election were cast early3), and no excuse is required to cast an absentee ballot (in fact, Arizona maintains a Permanent Early Voting List, and enrollees are automatically mailed a ballot in advance of each election). As of last Thursday, 144,249 people had already voted, according to the Arizona secretary of state.
Although those ballots haven’t been counted yet, the data on who submitted them — their age, gender, party, etc. — is public information. Unfortunately for Tipirneni, 49 percent of those who have voted so far are registered Republicans; only 28 percent are registered Democrats. A whopping 58 percent of the electorate so far is age 65 or older.
Normally, we put very little stock in early-voting-based predictions. There are too many places for your train of logic to go off the rails: Registered party members may not be voting for their party’s candidate; we have no idea how registered independents are voting; the people who vote on Election Day might behave completely differently from early voters and drown them out; and so on. However … a 21-point party gap is a huge difference, and there probably aren’t going to be that many more votes cast on Election Day itself. By no means do the early-voting numbers suggest that Tipirneni is doomed, but they’re definitely good for Lesko.
The surplus of early votes will also be a boon to those who follow the results live on Tuesday night. Expect the early vote to be released about an hour after polls close at 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. Eastern Time); since those initial results are expected to constitute the vast majority of ballots, we might know who the winner is right then and there. If not, the truly dedicated can stay up late to watch the Election Day results trickle in on the secretary of state website. Since only one county (Maricopa) lies within the boundaries of the 8th District, we can’t provide our usual county-by-county benchmarks to watch for, but analyst Ryan Matsumoto has put together precinct benchmarks that you can use to get a sense for whether Lesko or Tipirneni is hitting the vote goals she needs.
5. The bottom line
Even if, as expected, Democrats do lose this race, it could still be good news for their prospects in November. The key question to ask is this: How much did Tipirneni outperform partisan-lean-based expectations by? Even if Lesko ends up winning Arizona’s 8th District comfortably, beware of a media narrative that portrays it as good news for Republicans, or at least a reprieve from the recent run of close elections. It makes no sense to compare elections based on the moving target of how close they are; you need a fixed reference point like improvement over base partisanship. Based on FiveThirtyEight partisan lean, an 8-point Lesko win would be exactly in line4 with past special-election results that have pointed to a Democratic wave. If, however, Lesko wins by a margin in the teens — thus holding Democratic overperformance to 12 points or fewer — then perhaps special-election results are beginning to come into agreement with the tightening generic ballot polls; maybe Democrats’ position truly is eroding. Or maybe not — it’s just one data point.
The margin may also influence both parties’ thinking about November’s big U.S. Senate race in Arizona, which could be decisive in the battle for control of the upper chamber.5 Again, this special election will be just one data point, but it will be the first one we have for the Grand Canyon State, which is important because Democratic special-election overperformance has varied widely from state to state. Arizona as a whole has a FiveThirtyEight partisan lean of R+7.5, so theoretically, any Tipirneni overperformance of 8 points or more would bode well for Democrats’ chances to flip Sen. Jeff Flake’s open seat.

Pygmalion Relations
Dear mother,
It could not have been a singular origin, the singularity of a beginning, the point of the big bang; rather, it would have to have been a moment of originary coincidence. A coincidence, a coincident, the doubling of a co inside, of an originary two, the condition made possible by the originary trace, which is to say, all conditions. It would thus leave traces, footprints that rippled both ways in the event, forward and backward.[1]
I had been assigned to this man, and upon seeing him, I could not believe my eyes. He was of utter beauty, grazing perfection. The reproduction of the image of the Vitruvian man […][2] His face was distorted[3] and his nose was misshapen, too. Not much, to be sure […].[4] But the perfect proportion and symmetry of his body and frame rendered him beautiful. His skin texture was perfect, the individual hairs on head and body had been lovingly and intricately manufactured and placed.[5] He was transparent but impenetrable.[7] Everything that I could see in this body produced in me ecstatic wonder.[8]
It was evidently a case of “love at first sight” […][9] He would allow but one assistant to work with him […][10], which is how I ended up moving into his home. The habit of living a long time innocently together, far from weakening the first sentiments I felt for him, had contributed to strengthen them.[11]
I had studied all the details of housekeeping; I understood cooking and cleaning; I knew the prices of food, and also how to choose it; I could keep accounts accurately […].[12] Man has lashes on the eye lids on either side ; and I made it my daily care to stain his ; so ardent was he in the pursuit of beauty, that he must even colour his very eyes.[13] […] And he was in the habit of washing his face seven hundred times daily, and I would be strictly observing that number.[14] I would always take care of the oiling of his body, carefully spreading it in an even manner all over his stature. If I employed extracts, they had to have been recently prepared and preserved with great care.[15]
Now for his diet: for lunch honey, for dinner a biscuit and vegetables, meat infrequently.... In this way his body kept the same condition, as if on a straight line, without being sometimes healthy, sometimes sick, and without growing heavier Even outside the strictly Pythagorean context, regimen was regularly defined with reference to these two associated dimensions of good health maintenance and proper care of the soul.[1] And there were always drugs around—most notably, the jars of white crosses and other uppers that he kept in the fridge next to his protein fortified milkshakes.[2] In the succeeding month, our health improved [3] even beyond what I had thought was the limit.
Every day, I would go into his bedroom, search around for his running shorts and shoes and T shirt, change his clothes in eagerness, and soon enough, his body would find itself out on the pavement, with his feet pounding the ground and his heart beginning to thump away.[16]
And then, drawn out from his body, his sinews formed a bundle of dark, shiny stalks, not unlike the bundle of lightning bolts that lay beside him, although these were bright and smoking.[17] Now between the dry head, more than dead, almost abstract, empty and desiccated, suitably objectivized, wholly exterior, pierced, visible, nameable, articulated, analyzable, between the skull and the rest of the world, a circumstantial halo of light, like the ones worn by the great saints, replaces, at bone level, the lining of flesh, fat, muscle, organs, skin, veins, tendons, hair, radiance, charm, beauty, glory.[18]
Perhaps it was the fascination of seeing that particular beauty, force and dedication so explicitly personified in a human body,[19] or perhaps it was something else. But in any way, I wanted to be seen with him. One of us alone could do only so much, but both of us together …[20]
I once wondered, For what purpose?[21] And he asked me if I thought it was truly possible to think without arriving at beauty, without penetrating the secret place where life bubbles up, without the transfiguration of the body?[22] To Lenny, you see, beauty was some inherent property, to be found suffused all through the body of that which may be called beautiful; whereas ornament, rather than being inherent, had the character of something attached or additional.[23] In an ecstasy of joy, no doubt intensified by the joy I felt in making him shine before my friends, with extreme volubility, I reiterated, stroking and patting him as though he was a horse that had just come first past the post: “You’re the most beautiful man I know, do you hear?”[24]
Mother, I was incredibly happy with him. I had learned all that I could about his passion and would assist him with all my powers. But then came the move. We needed a new place to live, which is how we met Ludwig.
Wandering in the public square, a lit lantern in hand in the middle of the day, […] A garden more inviting than Eden would […] meet our eyes.[25] On the door of the magnificent garden was written with golden letters: 'The Abode of Beauty'. “The abode of Beauty!” Lenny had exclaimed, “Oh! that is what I want to see!”[26]
Once we arrived, we studied him and were pleased with what we had found,[27] which led to us moving in.
For some time after our arrival, every thing he saw excited wonder and admiration; and not till he was a little familiarized with the new objects, did he ask reasonable questions.[28]
During our breakfast, instead of speaking with me, as we used to, Lenny would often look out of the window at the […] small garden, brilliantly lit without shadows or oppressive heat […][29]. He once whispered to himself, quietly: “[…] That rose, it has all the perfections I speak of; colour, grace, and sweetness — and even when the fine tints fade, the smell is grateful to those who have before contemplated its beauties.”[30] But I felt uneasy. You see, Mother, he started to deck himself with plumes, necklaces, armlets, […][31] and earrings bearing gems that looked like diamonds.[32]He would ornament his body, something that he had always despised. And, on the other hand, Ludwig’s body would change. I often saw him building, constructing, modifying. He stopped asking me to help him with his training. I felt completely shallow and useless.. [4]
The most striking interior volume was the central, double height gymnasium that at once evoked memories of medieval great halls and was bathed with light from huge windows. […][33] It contained all sorts of apparatus: an exercise bicycle, wall bars, a rowing machine, a massage machine etc.[34]
When I saw him look at Lenny with lust […][35], the hatred of Ludwig gnawed my heart, but it was a hatred mingled with admiration of the beautiful, adulated body of his.
I would often glance through the windows, observing him move, sculpt, construct. His body became an architectural structure, moving masonry, a ship; the skeleton became a firm framework, with tie beams and rafters; the muscles formed the wall and partitions.[36] And with every drop of sweat, it would feel like Ludwig morphed, changing simultaneously to Lenny’s body.
I would not have been jealous if he had enjoyed his pleasures in my vicinity, with my encouragement, completely under my surveillance, thereby relieving me of any fear of mendacity,[37] but he was excluding me from all his activities.
Mother, it was not good for me. […] If he left my side for a moment, I became anxious, began to imagine that he had spoken to or simply looked at Ludwig. If he was not in the best of tempers, I thought that I must be causing him to miss or to postpone some appointment. Reality is never more than a first step towards an unknown on the road to which one can never progress very far. It is better not to know, to think as little as possible, not to feed one’s jealousy with the slightest concrete detail. Unfortunately, in the absence of an outer life, incidents are created by the inner life too; in the absence of expeditions with him, the random course of my solitary reflections furnished me at times with some of those tiny fragments of the truth which attract to themselves, like a magnet, an inkling of the unknown, which from that moment becomes painful.[38]
On one somber evening Lenny came up to me, looked me straight into the soul and said, “A little while ago I did not know something that I know now; I know with whom I shall die.”[39]
[…] I then knew loneliness and isolation and I felt […] like an alien from another world.
Now, Mother, I was already hurting all over. I would have many sleepless nights. But it only got worse, the exclusion only intensified…
One day, he got out of bed and walked into the bathroom for a shave and for the remainder of the morning ritual,[40] without even saying good morning to me. Everything happened, then, during the seconds of complete veiling. Hardly had it begun than a strange light, yellow and tawny, resembling nothing else, neither the evening nor the dawn, invaded the environment; the glory of orange light intercepted by the walls of my abode disappeared, giving way to a somber and magic bath […].[41] It was a surprise bath, where Ludwig had taken him down the corridors to an upper floor; he was then tipped backwards into the water. [42] I wanted to employ extracts, which I had recently prepared and preserved with great care,[43] but he gesticulated me to leave. I had always assisted him in cleaning himself, and could not bear letting him do it alone. I sat down beside the door, hearing unconscionable noise and splashing.[44] I then overheard him, whispering incoherently while giggling like a little girl: "Ludwig… Ludwig, I love you...Don't laugh at me, please don't laugh!...[45] I thought to myself: Oh, I shall die of pain and love and jealousy!”[46]
After a while, he suddenly stepped outside, catching me in the act of eavesdropping. It was too late, now, to draw back, and since he was about to know all, in order not to seem too miserable, too jealous and inquisitive, I called out in a cheerful, casual tone of voice: “Please don’t bother; I just happened to be passing, and saw the light.”[47] I looked at his body and found it clean as virgin silver, […] whereat he rejoiced exceedingly and his breast expanded with gladness,[48] and then happily frolicked away, with only a towel tucked around his waist. I collapsed on the chair right in front of the seemingly endless stairs leading to the master bedroom.
When Lenny closed the door behind him, I heard a sort of echo in the roof; it sounded like voices […].[49] And then, blackness, […] vast emptiness stretching out infinitely.[50] Deep, dark, dank, dismal silence.[51] the infinite void of space[52] True loneliness occurs not when there are no others around me, but when I am deprived even of my shadow.[53]
Then he began to rush wildly about the room, shouting, singing, making a great noise […].[54] […] the ground below shuddered uneasily.[55] Then […] the chant, mingled with a murmur of supplication in the midst of ecstasy, seemed at times to stop altogether like a spring that has ceased to flow.[56]
Lenny returned; he was not at all surprised to encounter me before his door […].[57] After stepping out of the room, he shouted: “The glorious light makes me drunk with joy and my sense of wonder has no limits. This pleasure is truly divine! What pure happiness I feel in the bottom of my heart at this spectacle! What ecstasy! No, I cannot possibly give expression to it […]!”[58] He was absolutely in a state of ecstasy, and, involuntary, sinking on his knees, he passionately extended his arms towards Ludwig, certain he could not hear, and having no conception that he could see him.[59] Lenny stood, amazed, afraid of being mistaken, his joy tempered with doubt, and again and again stroked the object of his prayers. It was a body; he could feel the veins as he pressed them with his thumb.[60] And then, a cry of joy […]. [61]
This made me cry because I was not like it, not something complete, which turned toward the lost sweetness of life like a distant quotation. Happiness can only be thought of as something lost, as a beautiful alien. It cannot be anything more than a premonition that we approach with tears in our eyes without ever reaching it. [62]
I needed to get out.
Mother, I learned an important lesson. Accepting the unfortunate reality would calm my soul far more than endlessly aiming at an unattainable fiction.
When I got into the open air, I heard distinctly, as the night was still, Lenny’s joyous laughter.[63] When I looked back at what had once been a house, it struck me. He had sculpted the finest work of art I had ever seen, much like his own body. It was the most sublime, most charming, most graceful, most splendid, most touching [64] […] more safely guarded by its walls, more superb in palaces, more ornamented in respect to temples, more beautiful by virtue of its buildings, more illustrious in its porticoes, more splendid in its piazzas[65] He had given great attention to realistic detail, rendering each feature with painstaking precision, […][66] and the more time I spent studying the detail, the more I realized how much love and passion had gone into it.[67]
I saw Lenny’s silhouette, through the veiled windows of the master bedroom in the top floor, dancing with Ludwig, hearing cheerful and ecstatic echoes vibrating through my ears as the night was still.
They were now mutually bound together, the lighter being restrained by the heavier, so that it cannot fly off; while, on the contrary, from the lighter tending upwards, the heavier is so suspended, that it cannot fall down.[68] So these two beings will live in this manner, high aloft, with all that improbability which is in nature; neither at the nadir nor at the zenith, between man and seraphim, above the mire, below the ether, in the clouds; hardly flesh and blood, soul and ecstasy from head to foot; already too sublime to walk the earth, still too heavily charged with humanity to disappear in the blue, suspended like atoms which are waiting to be precipitated; apparently beyond the bounds of destiny; ignorant of that rut; yesterday, to day, tomorrow; amazed, rapturous, floating, soaring; at times so light that they could take their flight out into the infinite; almost prepared to soar away to all eternity.[69]
My Love […] must, like every mental state, even the most lasting, find itself one day obsolete, be “replaced,” and that when that day would come, everything that seemed to attach me so sweetly, indissolubly, to the memory of Lenny, would no longer exist for me. [70] Just as in morality, pleasure and pain have but a single source, and an end to pain is enough to produce pleasure.[71]
Dear Mother, there are times which are landmarks in our lives; and they not only mark off a phase that has passed, but, at the same time, point out clearly our new direction.[72] I am looking forward to coming home.
I embrace you, […][73]

In 2013, a series of provocative music videos competed for pop culture’s attention. There was Kim Kardashian’s bare breasts bouncing for Kanye West’s “Bound 2,” then Disney-alum Miley Cyrus scantily clad and swinging on a wrecking ball. But it was “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke’s comeback classic that was easily the most memorable. Not for Thicke’s own star power (or even the subsequent backlash regarding the song’s problematic concept of consent), but because of the sample-sized models strutting coquettishly around him.
Only one of the three made an instant impression. “Blurred Lines” created a sex symbol of bodacious beauty Emily Ratajkowski overnight, catapulting her to household status with Kate Upton-esque momentum. Naturally, the rumors and rumination about her body began right away. We’d all been hypnotized by the pendulum effect of her proportions, which just couldn’t be real. “Let’s just Google her measurements,” a friend suggested. When we uncovered the circumference of Ratajkowski's breasts, waist and hips (roughly 35”-24”-34” according to hotmodelsactress.com — a size two), the comparison began.
We didn’t know it then, but Ratajkowski’s body ascribed to what has long-been fashion’s “golden ratio.” A measuring tape should reveal breasts and hips sized no higher than 36 inches (preferably 34”), and a waist no higher than 25” (preferably 24”). The standard is believed to be implemented after WWII, when a fabric shortage meant designers relied on smaller bodies to optimize profitability.
Over the past decade, the industry has been at its most inclusive yet. Fashion has gradually become a little less sizeist, racist, ageist, even ableist (even if only with a healthy dose of tokenism to impress the digital gen). As such, many curve girls have become supermodels in their own right — an unthinkable prospect at the turn of the millennium. But while the desired height of women on the runway has grown in the meantime (5’9” upwards) and we’re seeing diverse body types in the mainstream for the first time, the sample size has barely fluctuated.
“There is a practical reason that most models are the same size, and that’s called a sample collection,” Tom Ford told WWD in 2018. “You make a sample collection [according to] a standardized selection of measurements for models… Whether we all decide to start making all of our clothes in the next size up, that’s a different thing. But there is practicality, there’s a reason models are a standard size.”
For women who are six feet to fit fashion’s standards, they would have to weigh in at a near-impossible 115 pounds, claims @shitmodelmgmt. The anonymous Instagram-anchored fashion industry watchdog made headlines several years ago when they offered an open call to models who’d been harassed by designers, photographers, agents and casting directors — eventually emboldening models enough to call out predatory celebrity photographers on their own). Now, she’s using her platform to confront a different injustice in the industry. After conducting a poll of 4000 models, 65 percent claimed to have developed eating disorders to adhere to sample size expectations. In response, SMGMT created a petition to raise the sample size from size zero through four, to six through eight. So far, 15,000 have signed.
“I wanted to see how many of my followers were naturally [sample] size, and the majority of them are not,” she writes on its homepage. “In order to cut down to the required measurements/weight, they are having to resort to unhealthy means like starving themselves, restrictive diets, overexercising and other ways that severely risk their health.”
Within the past week, the outcry over too-small samples has reached fever pitch. Stylist Francesca Burns, formerly Fashion Editor of i-D, took to Instagram to reveal she’d been on set with a “tiny” model (no bigger than a US size four), who could not do up a pair of Hedi Slimane Celine pants. None of the Celine looks the stylist had pulled fit the sample-sized model, which made Burns feel like “a creep.”
“This is so unacceptable,” Burns wrote. “It is fundamentally wrong to suggest that this is the norm. It isn’t. We also have a responsibility for those in our care on set and to make sure beauty standards are not limited to a size that is completely unrealistic for the majority... Things have to change in so many ways but how hard is it to size things up?”
Fashionista editor-in-chief Tyler McCall was one of many industry insiders to endorse Burns’ message. While she understands why production of a singular small size is both efficient and cost effective, she describes the standard as a “big stumble block for true inclusivity.”
“Those ‘standard’ measurements destroy girls at such a young age,” adds agent and casting director, Kevin Chung. “Weight loss pills, working out incessantly to the point they are physically and mentally unable to do their job. It's a shame, but it's also not their fault… We need to be more cognizant of different body types and not all bodies are able to achieve those measurements — and that is okay. [Models] shouldn’t have to alter measurements to fit an unattainable standard.”
When Lauren Graves was scouted by IMG in 2002, she was 13. Her younger years were dedicated to high fashion, although now she’s just as frequently hired for lifestyle/commercial, beauty, fit production and showroom modeling. The pressure of working in fashion at a young age meant she was “always hungry,” and she now only works with a range smaller, boutique agencies. While she entered the industry at size two to four, standing over 5’10”. After various eating disorders, now-recovered Graves’ wears a six or eight and models curve.
“When your dream is to model, you listen to your agencies when they say, ‘Hey listen, I need you to lose [X] pounds, you would be so much more marketable,” Lauren says. “Some girls are genetically very thin, but it's not common. I would say a large portion of the girls fitting these sizes are trying very hard to. For fashion, most agencies will tell you to lose weight anyway.”
Kevin agrees that those models are few and far between. “There are a handful of models who are naturally lean at 5’9”  to 5’11” — that's just genetics. But there are even more models who aren’t size zero through four and below 5’9.”
Dylan Wardwell is one such model. Although she faces other challenges in the industry as a trans woman, she is naturally a 5’10” size zero and has never been criticized for her size. Still, she knows plenty of models who aren’t allowed to work until they drop weight. For this reason, despite the potential repercussions for her own career, she acknowledges raising the sample size would be “the best thing” not only for the industry, but for society.
“It can’t be that hard to make a more inclusive show if brands put in the effort,” she says. “I think everyone likes to blame this standard on ‘the way it is’ instead of realizing we all as individuals contribute to this culture.”
“Being a fit model you get to work behind the scenes with production and design teams, and the change wouldn’t be hard,” Lauren adds. “They just haven’t done it.”
“It's a bit of a chicken-versus-egg,” echoes Tyler. “Designers will say they maintain sample sizes because those are the models they're given to work with, and casting directors will say they have to make sure models can fit the sample… we're talking size zero or even double zero, that's a hard target to hit for most grown women.”
Curve model Chloe Vero has walked the runway for Tommy Hilfiger and Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty, securing magazine covers and major campaigns. Vero is one of the “lucky ones,” a model who’s not straight-sized but remains in demand season after season. While Chloe’s grateful for her success, she still catches herself wondering what professional heights she might have reached if she were smaller.
“I have to remind myself that it is the lack of acceptance that is making me feel this way,” she says. “I’ve been on sets where I’m the only one who is my size working and everyone else is significantly smaller than me and that takes a toll on you mentally. Working on sets that reflect our day to day lives and how we interact with the world around us can allow for a safer and more comfortable space.”
With the exception of your waist being ten inches smaller than your hips (the clothing production standard across almost all sizes), curve modeling has very few mandates. This kind of forward trajectory, Lauren opines, can be credited to the lifestyle realm who capitalized on a missed marketing opportunity:  “A lot of commercial and indie brands are now working with models who represent the consumer because they’ve recognized the money that can be made off large portions of the population.”
When it comes to high fashion, Kevin can’t imagine petitions facilitating a palpable shift without support from the top down. “Until the people in power leave their current roles, we won’t see real change. Bigger people shouldn’t have to fight for clothing in their size range; designers should just have them because diversity should be inherent. People should not have to tell you to be more inclusive — that's inhumane.”
While she “doesn’t want to be a downer,” Tyler shares this sentiment. “There are so many players and so many moving parts in fashion with something like this that it would be almost impossible to get everyone on board. It's more a question of keeping the pressure on to see that representation, and supporting those who are getting it right.”
Dylan just wants a world in which she isn’t measured at castings — “If I fit the clothes, I fit the clothes” — whereas Chloe hopes the future might usher in the same opportunities for curve models as straight-sized. For his part, Kevin is ready to see fasting and diet pills made obsolete, and nutritionists as well as mental health counselors made accessible to models.
Any real change, Lauren says, will have to start and finish with designers. The narrative that clothes “fall better on slimmer figures,” or that “less fabric” or “small breasts” is easier to work with is perpetuated by those at the drawing board. Until they prioritize creating clothes for healthy bodies, we’ll all remain enslaved to measurements.
“They have an opportunity to break the mold they've always worked with, and make the clothes to fit a body — not that a body is forced to fit into,” she concludes. “Designers seem afraid of breaking the old mold, even though in my opinion, that’s what creativity is.”

Nutrisystem Food regimen Overview
Nutrisystem is an environment friendly weight management plan that is widely distributed through the net. I had NutriSystem prompt pudding for dessert, which was very similar to Jello instantaneous pudding, although not fairly as flavorful or candy. I have never exercised nearly as much as I've wanted too, but I've positively caught to the Nutrisystem plan even when I've lacked the exercise time. Separately, NutriSystem mentioned it also tied up with Wal-Mart's warehouse division Sam's Club for its 35-day weight-loss program, which will likely be available in late December. With all weight-reduction plan programs, especially people who present pre-made meals, you must set your expectations appropriately. Of course, your total price may be slightly different depending on the plan that you select and your flex food options. Each program comes with detailed explanations of the stretches and exercises you're alleged to carry out. While most of these eating regimen packages often seem expensive, they are usually solely slightly costlier than an individual's ordinary expenditure on food, each at dwelling and on the go. For individuals who have been consuming an extreme variety of calories anyway, or who continuously eat out, it might even be that their grocery payments cut back when they sign as much as the program. Oh the primary few days have been laborious, I did have further food plan shakes in the home and used them to complement the starvation pains however on the third day the extra cravings went away, right now I woke with more energy and started a exercise plan. In response to this need, the Nutrisystem food regimen comes to the rescue as a straightforward resolution to the face paced way of life that leaves little room for engaged on a conventional food regimen that must be sourced, prepared and cooked by the particular person using it. When there is no such thing as a time for all of that, the weight loss plan plans from Nutrisystem fill the void perfectly as a result of they're virtually utterly work-free almost about all that food preparation and cooking, never mind all of the calorie calculating and portion control. I wrote this Nutrisystem assessment to share my weight reduction story and inform, encourage and encourage others who are looking to drop extra pounds with a straightforward and reasonably priced weight loss program. I already misplaced 2 lbs the primary day and I do not know if its as a result of its a great food plan or as a result of everything is so gross I can hardly finish it. The only good thing sofar are the brownies. The elements in nutrisystem meals Nutrisystem meals will support promote heart nicely being and can maintain you feeling fuller longer. The truth is, there's actually only one place where you may constantly buy Nutrisystem products. You join and order by way of the Nutrisystem web site You too can order through QVC or purchase at Costco. Whenever you're selecting your diet plan, you'll be sent a whole whole month's worth of meals gadgets. The plan I chose, which is the Core plan, solely consists of the shelf foods as an alternative of the frozen varieties. Nutrisystem not only is here to help in making our lives better but additionally they truly care about our lives and what we are coping with in on a regular basis life. I want things to be easy and straightforward to arrange and Nutrisystem is nice for individuals who like comfort. What Nutrisystem has made me notice about my prior eating habits is that 1) my portions had been TOTALLY out of whack, and a pair of) I thought I used to be eating enough greens in my previous life, however I most likely wasn't. You are also inspired to raise weights and get along with other Nutrisystem customers in your space for sports activities activities. I did not lose any weight on Nutrisystem even whereas pared with every day exercise as a result of my body went into hunger mode. Individuals typically want to know how this system works, whether or not you continue to eat the nutrisystem meals, and approximately how a lot this program costs. Therapeutic Life-style Changes , or TLC, is a really stable weight loss plan plan created by the Nationwide Institutes of Well being. I additionally wasn't used to the chocolate taste but now i'm and that i find it irresistible. This diet is the one one that has labored for me, i have 50 kilos to lose. They are not out there to you as part of your meal plan shifting forward except you need to pay individually for them. In a scientific examine sponsored by Nutrisystem, those that adopted Turbo10 lost 3x more weight, 3x more complete physique inches and 3x more physique fat within the first month in comparison with those that adopted a do-it-yourself (DIY) weight loss plan. Nutrisystem has so many constructive things going for it that so long as you stick to the food regimen, it'll be just right for you and you'll drop a few pounds. A true Paleo weight loss program could be an amazing option: very lean, pure meats, numerous wild crops, stated one expert-quickly adding, however, that duplicating such a routine in fashionable times could be difficult. Lack of weight reduction when on a calorie managed weight-reduction plan is usually attributed to a slowdown of metabolism to match the lower calorie rely. Some sample Nutrisystem meals include: Butternut Squash Ravioli, Candy and Bitter Rooster, and Hen and Cheese Quesadilla. I plan to continue as a member of Nutrisystem and revel in all the advantages they have to supply. Ice cream would've been a nice addition, however I think it has a bit of too much fat to be thought of part of this weight loss plan. I discovered methods to use my vegetables to my meals in inventive ways comparable to including spinach or olives to my Nutrisystem pizza or including spaghetti squash to my Nutrisystem meatballs. We've been going with nutrisystem for 3 weeks and he misplaced 11 lbs to my 9 lbs so far. In short, it is fairly unlikely that you'll able to hop in your automobile after which come home with bags filled with Nutrisystem merchandise. A whole lot of the meals tastes like food plan meals, but read the food opinions and choose what sounds good to you. The weight loss plan is decreased calories, and scientific trials undertaken by Nutrisystem have proven vital weight reduction (on the newer programs using the Turbo 10 start). By going to the official Nutrisystem web site, you will note that there are quite a few choices which you can select from, together with women's weight loss program plans, men's food plan plans, and plans which can be particularly for individuals who suffer from diabetes. You get any two days off on the flex plan so it is the cheapest option on the market. I was planning to continue this system after I get settled but after this, I wouldn't want to, said another. A lot of people do not understand that if they tough it out for a few days they can get used to this weight loss program and begin feeling nice, it is the primary few days that are the toughest. Not like many of its opponents, this weight loss program program actually has one thing to supply. For the past forty years, Nutrisystem has helped millions of people obtain real, vital weight reduction results. I also save slightly bit extra money by going by means of a web site called TopCashBack that just hyperlinks to on-line websites like Walmart and then provides you money again in return. This sample of eating is often referred to as the 5:2 weight loss program - you eat normally for five days of the week and minimize your energy to about 25 p.c of regular intake on two nonconsecutive days of the week. So should you wanted to lose 30 pounds, your complete cost to reduce weight on Nutrisystem could be roughly $1619.ninety four - $2,159.ninety two depending on whether it takes you three months or 4 months to lose the weight. Actually, simply counting the energy, and eating normal food is a lot healthier than consuming special weight-reduction plan meals. Whats up, I have been on nutrisystem for 3 and 3/four months and I've misplaced 60 pounds. My husband came dwelling, took one have a look at me, and told me I wanted to get off this diet. I would like to have the ability to order their meals without having to commit to a selected plan and pay more. As a result of you can get sufficient food for a month generally within the mid $200 vary which is more economical and will final you for much longer and provide you with far more meals to work with. He assured me that the eating regimen was based on the under 2000 mg a day that my own doctor has beneficial. Most cost-effective plan: Not customizable, and is fairly basic, costing from $239.99 for a 28 day package deal. What I did not understand on the time is that the nutrisystem meals and program goes to be the same no matter who is buying it and using it. They don't make different food for celebrities or for the people who have essentially the most success.

Character Task 002
warning that most of the theme song choices are meant to be comedic, since I just joined and most of these relationshps have been HC’d with the other players, and that I’m awful at coming up with playlists/theme songs so I figured I would go for comedy where I was lost
Adrian & Philippe - The Ride Or Die  - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John @philippexlinwood
song explanation: Adrian immigrated to London from South Korea without speaking a word of English. He learned English by listening to Elton John, Queen, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Madonna, Elvis, and other records. Adrian’s hidden talent is music and he always sang Erin to sleep as a little girl, and then into her teenage years after she had nightmares or really bad days and she’d cry for hours, and now he sings to five year old Maisie. Philippe can’t carry a tune to save his life, but that doesn’t stop him from drunk-singing with Adrian. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the first song Philippe ever heard Adrian sing, as a lullaby to then three year old Maisie, one of the first nights he had his niece-turned-daughter after his sister’s murder. Philippe has loved hearing him sing to Maisie ever since, so he never minds when he bedtime comes along while he’s over, it’s an excuse to listen. Elton John is one of the singers that Adrian and Phil can always agree on when it’s tunes and booze night.
quote: It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics to set you on your feet again
Philippe and Adrian are the kind of best friends who everyone assumes are actually boyfriends. In fact, other members of the Royals gang refer to them as husbands to their faces. If they’ve been seen in public together several days in a row and then another Royal notices one without the other, the standard approach is “Where’s your husband today?” They think it’s hilarious. But lowkey, are they attracted to each other? Who knows. Who cares? Not Adrian. He’s just grateful to have Philippe in his life. Because Phil is Adrian’s best friend and he really truly seriously loves Phil. Except, you know, it’s kind of embarrassing to say those things out loud. He’s beyond glad that as Phil became more involved in the gang, he heard rumors about a doctor who occasionally performed a hit and that the paradoxical existence of a healer and killer in one person intrigued him enough to seek him out and meet him. One wouldn’t think that the Royals’ second-in-command would be anybody’s go-to babysitter when gang duty didn’t call, but that’s also exactly what Philippe Linwood is. He’s always wanted kids, though if Adrian spreads that around he’s getting punched in the dick. Phil’s developed a soft spot for Adrian’s twenty and five year olds, offering to help link up Erin to connections in the music world, and always reminding Adrian he’s happy to help out with Maisie. Four months following Adrian’s sister’s murder at the orchestration of their own father, Phil gifted Adrian the gun he would finally use two years later to kill his father, Won-shik Jung. Adrian never thought that someone like him would be able to have anything resembling a normal friendship, but that’s exactly what Philippe is to him. Aside from, you know, the organized crime ring they’re part of, the Phil congratulating him on his successful patricide thing, and the occasional only part-jokes about killing other mobsters in the city.
Adrian & Jack - The Reluctant-ish Companion - Gravity’s A Bitch - Miranda Lambert @jack-is-back
song explanation: This choice is largely comedic; they’re two men in their mid thirties, Jack at 35 and Adrian at 36, and though they are both healthy and fit men, they’re still nearing 40, not nearing 30.
quote: Then thirties come around and you finally feel the ground ... and though you're far from old, you moisturize and spend less time tanning
Adrian and Jack are an unlikely pair. The doctor, though serious where it counts in raising his daughters, can be playful and frivolous when it suits him whereas Jack Monroe...can’t. Adrian is at least 5% sure he’s a cyborg. Despite the odd pairing, Jack has become a steady presence in Adrian’s life. Ever since he first asked him to teach him fighting, self defense, and teach him a good workout regimen (to make sure he could take on anybody who may hurt Erin to get to him) Jack has happily took him on as his project. As his friend, though? It’s debateable at times, but Jack seems to enjoy time spent with Adrian now and again. It’s probably good for him once in a while when Adrian goes on rants about his personal life; sometimes it’s good to be reminded you’re a human capable and deserving of friendships, not just a bad person who accidentally killed someone and has to live mired in guilt.
Adrian & Chrissy - The New Intrigue - Doctor - Emily Kinney @chrissyxstorm
song explanation: Other than the last few lines, this adorable af song totally fits the direction in which I feel their relationship may be headed. And it’s a little on the nose since she’s a nurse and he’s a pediatric surgeon turned back-alley doctor.
quote: No I am not a doctor, but I've got some extra time, I've got some drugs I keep in stock called vodka and red wine
When one thinks ‘mobster’ one doesn’t think a kind man involved in the parents’ council at his five year old’s school. But, well, that’s how Adrian and Chrissy met. Adrian isn’t entirely sure what he thinks of her other than he likes what he’s seen so far and wants to learn more. Maisie plays with Kaeli on the playground at school so it’d probably be a good idea to get to know her mother a little bit. There’s got to be more to Chrissy Storm than meets the eye, but hell, she probably has no idea he’s a back-alley doctor who’s accepted money to kill people before, so...even, right?
Adrian & Teddy - The Bonus Kid - Vagabonds - MisterWives @sincerelytheodosia
song explanation: Not as much a theme for their relationship as it is a theme for different aspects their lives at different points in time. Teddy, in a new country to search for her mother, on an athletic scholarship but otherwise lost in a strange place. Adrian at her age was a single father to a toddler struggling to figure out how to keep his daughter safe from his father, and Adrian now feels just as alone if not more than he did when his daughter was placed in his arms when he was sixteen but for different reasons.
quote: Troubled sea so deep, troubled none no sleep, you've been flying so high avoiding the road, pretending to not feel alone
Teddy is probably the least expected on this list. What would a 19 year old have in common with thirty-six year old Adrian? Adrian’s twenty year old daughter, of course! Teddy Wilcox and aspiring singer/songwriter and musical actress Erin Jung met at a coffee shop Erin was performing at when Teddy approached her after her set to excitedly ask “did you seriously just sing a soul version of a Metallica song? Who even are you?” And a friendship began. Erin soon began bringing Teddy by the house after she found out Teddy was in London alone and didn’t have any family. Adrian insisted Teddy let him know if she needs anything - like a nice homemade meal if she’s short of groceries and too tired to make a trip, to borrow twenty pounds for rent, anything a girl her age should usually run to a parent or grandparent for he said he’s glad to help any friend of Erin’s.
Adrian & Atrius - Okay, So We’re Doing This - Guys My Age - Hey Violet @atrius-trower
song explanation: I was between multiple songs so I may have to make a full playlist later for lulz but (shrug) I settled on Guys My Age because it’s well known Atrius has a thing for older men.
quote: Guys my age don't know how to treat me, guys my age don't know how to touch me
On one hand, Adrian’s lost count of the number of times they’ve ended up with their clothes on the floor. On the other, Adrian always felt a little guilty because until he found out Atrius was in fact twenty-eight whole years old, he was positive he was at most twenty-two and sleeping with a man fourteen years his junior on multiple occasions felt...somehow morally wrong. But eight years? That’s comfortable. He isn’t sure how he’d describe their relationship. Friends? Kinda. Friends with benefits? Sure, but that usually implies there’s more feelings there. Adrian has always been good at separating sex from emotions, so it’s not strange to him at all that he’s also admittedly fond of Atrius from a non-romantic angle. He’s a nice guy, someone who deserves to keep smiling as much as he does. It’s not like he ever meant for Artius’ curiosity of him and his mild adoration of Atrius to turn into an ongoing albeit irregular sexual relationship. It just sort of, em, happened. Just like everytime they end up sleeping together it just...happens. The thought that inevitably crosses Adrian’s mind is, “oh shit, are we about to sleep together again?” because it’s never exactly expected.

Types of Saxophones: What One is Right for You?
The saxophone is one of the world's most popular instruments and is technically in the woodwind family/woodwind instruments although they are usually made of brass. It was first conceived around 1840 and developed in 1846 by a Belgian born instrument maker/inventor by the name of Adolphe Sax. Find out more about the different types of saxophones here and which one is right for you.
The saxophone is a fun-to-play instrument that is commonly used in a variety of musical genres, including classical, rock, blues, and reggae and they are used in chamber music, such as saxophone quartets and other chamber combinations of instruments. A brass instrument dates back to the mid 19th century but they are mostly used as an ensemble instrument in concert bands, symphonic bands, marching bands, and occasionally orchestras.  They were the E flat sopranino, F sopranino, B flat soprano, C soprano, E flat alto, F alto, B flat tenor, C tenor, E flat baritone, B flat bass, C bass, E flat contrabass, F contrabass, and subcontrabass.
Other types were created since then including the C-melody saxophone, Conn-O-Sax, F Mezzo-Soprano, F baritone, and the sopranissimo (nick-named the world’s smallest saxophone or soprillo).
If you've never played the instrument before, you might be under the impression that there's only one type available. However, the truth of the matter is that there are several.
Curious as to the different types of saxophones this world has to offer? Read on! These are the various types of saxophones.
Types of Saxophones
youtube
Saxophones come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes and produce a wide variety of sounds. Here are the different types of saxophones in the saxophone family. Highest Pitch (also marked "H" or "HP") saxophones tuned sharper than the (concert) A = 440 Hz standard was produced into the early twentieth century for sonic qualities suited for outdoor uses, but are not playable to modern tuning and are considered obsolete. Lowest Pitch (also marked "L" or "LP") saxophones are equivalent in tuning to modern instruments. C soprano and C melody saxophones were produced for the casual market as parlor instruments during the early twentieth century and it was marketed in the mid-1910s to 1920s as a non-transposing instrument.
1. Subcontrabass
The biggest saxophone in the world, the subcontrabass saxophone possesses nearly comical size. It stands in at around 10 feet tall, making it taller than just about any human who has ever walked the earth.
This saxophone creates absurdly low notes, some of which are so low that they can barely be heard by human ears. Loud and powerful, the subcontrabass saxophone is about as booming a brass instrument as you're ever going to find.
There are very few subcontrabass saxophones existing in the world today. This is because they're almost impossible for most individuals to play. As a beginner, you won't get anywhere near one of these instruments.
2. Contrabass
The next biggest saxophone is the contrabass saxophone. This instrument stands in at around 6 feet tall and typically has to be held horizontally in order to be played. However, if you're sitting down, it can be played upright.
While it doesn't get an extraordinary amount of play overall, the contrabass saxophone is used much more frequently than the rarely seen subcontrabass saxophone. In most cases, you'll see it used by virtuoso jazz players. It has a bit of a novelty quality.
Creating a big, resonating sound, this saxophone is not designed for beginner players. It requires far too much lung capacity in order to be played correctly.
3. Bass
Next up is the bass saxophone. While not as large as the subcontrabass or contrabass saxophones, this saxophone is still rather large, measuring in at around 4 feet in height.
These days, this type of saxophone is not used often. However, you might still see some jazz players playing it on occasion. It was fairly popular in the early 20th century, providing good low end for jazz big bands.
As a beginner, there's essentially no chance of you learning the bass saxophone. Its necessity for a large lung capacity makes it more conducive to the talents of seasoned musicians.
4. Baritone
The baritone saxophone is the largest of the commonly used saxophones, standing it at around 3 feet in height. Weighing in at between 12 and 35 pounds, this saxophone is bulky but manageable.
You'll see the baritone saxophone being used in a number of different musical genres. Not only is it used by jazz musicians and classical musicians, but by rock musicians as well.
While this musical instrument produces fairly low notes, its notes are easily distinguishable, allowing them to be heard with great precision and clarity. Nonetheless, it's generally used to provide songs with low end.
Though beginner players don't typically jump straight to the baritone saxophone, they're usually able to pick it up within a few years of beginning lessons. The reason that it's not typically picked up immediately is that it requires a great deal of lung strength.
5. Tenor
The tenor saxophone is one of the most widely used saxophones in the world. This saxophone is used extensively in a number of genres, from jazz to classical, to rock music, and much, much more. Some of the more prominent players of the tenor saxophone include John Coltrane, Clarence Clemons, and Coleman Hawkins.
This is a mid-sized saxophone, capable of being handled by players of all sizes. Often used in marching bands or military bands, it produces a full, but crisp sound that's great for rhythm work and harmony alike.
Many beginner saxophone players start off by learning the tenor saxophone. It's a great bridge to all other types of saxophones.
6. Alto
Like the tenor saxophone, the alto saxophone is one of the most commonly played saxophones in existence. This type of saxophone is used heavily in all types of music, including classical, jazz, and rock. Some famous musicians who played the alto saxophone include Charlie Parker and Jimmy Dorsey.
Designed to play melodies, the alto sax produces a clear, mid-level sound that cuts through the mixture of other instruments. Often used by soloists, it's one of the premier lead instruments in brass bands.
Alto saxophones are fairly small in stature, making them not only easy to hold but easy to play as well. Because of this, they're great for beginners.
7. Soprano
While soprano saxophones make similar sounds to all other types of saxophones, they are shaped far differently. Whereas other saxophones have a curved shape, soprano saxophones have a straight shape. In fact, they look similar to recorders and clarinets.
This type of saxophone is more difficult to learn and not recommended for beginning players. Correct embouchure or mouth position is critical to play this type of saxophone successfully.
Soprano saxophones are generally used by soloists in jazz music and classical music. Instrumentalist Kenny G can often be seen playing a soprano saxophone.
In general, beginner players should avoid soprano saxophones. These saxophones necessitate a very precise technique in order to be played appropriately. Most beginners will not possess this technique.
8. Sopranino
Visually, sopranino saxophones are like soprano saxophones, but smaller. Sound-wise, they produce slightly higher notes.
Sopranino saxophones are specialty saxophones that are generally only brought out to provide unique coloring to specific songs. Most often used by jazz musicians, they excel in improvisation.
Like soprano saxophones, sopranino saxophones are difficult for beginner players to learn. Those who are just starting out should generally not opt for sopranino saxophones.

Years and years of analysis have elapsed within the pursuit to utterly perceive the intricacies of human skeletal muscle contraction. It has included human, amphibian, and feline muscle biopsies, laboratory checks, sensible hands-on experiments, and deductive reasoning. Thankfully, we now have a stable grip on evidence-based sensible purposes in relation to designing and implementing resistance coaching packages. However, there nonetheless exists a lot controversy, ignorance, and confusion, even amongst educated trainers and trainees on this matter.
Before I start to simplify this situation, I perceive it could possibly grow to be an emotional matter as a result of varied faculties of thought that exist concerning one of the simplest ways to get stronger, enhance energy, maximize hypertrophy, enhance endurance, or enhance talent. Because there are a variety of philosophies on one of the simplest ways to achieve these attributes, each ego and monetary acquire are on the root of this. Hey, it’s the world we dwell in, however hanging on to confirmed science and analysis will give you some solace and customary sense to maneuver ahead.
If everybody simply accepted the next three indeniable info, coaching program design and implementation could be far more goal, safer, and smart:
Activity on Earth is ruled by fundamental legal guidelines of physics - one being gravitational pull.
The Henneman’s Size Principle of muscle fiber recruitment is the accepted gold-standard.
Your genetic skeletal construction, muscle fiber endowment, and nervous system "hook-ups" can't be ignored.
  Gravity's Pull and Resistance Training
The legislation of gravity clearly dictates you can't transfer a comparatively heavy resistance shortly. That is that if a resistance strikes shortly it should be “light” relative to your capability. Similarly, you'll be able to transfer a light-weight resistance comparatively shortly as in comparison with “heavy” resistance. The lighter resistance is, the quicker your potential pace of motion, all different elements being equal. Common sense, individuals.
Take Olympic lifters. These persons are robust. Look at their coaching regimens: they use coaching protocols to extend muscular energy, after which apply the talents of lifting heavy resistances with correct method.
They can solely transfer heavy resistances so quick and so excessive, so that they want the power to maneuver quick to safe it. That is, the resistance doesn't transfer quick, however their method does. Slower-moving entrance squatting, again squatting, and overhead urgent is completed to get stronger. Faster-moving talent apply is then carried out to excellent the required physique actions.
What a couple of typical train equivalent to a bench press or leg press? It's fairly straight-forward: load extra resistance on the bar or machine and it'll transfer slower as in comparison with utilizing a lighter resistance relative to your capability.
Think about it: you'll be able to certainly throw a baseball additional than a 16-pound shot used within the shot put. Likewise, all different elements being equal, a stronger individual can throw each implements even additional as in comparison with somebody comparatively weaker.
Henneman’s Size Principle: Slow vs. Fast Muscle Fiber
Muscle fibers are recruited sequentially primarily based on want. That is, the decrease the demand, the less fibers required and the better the demand, the extra fibers required. Low-demand efforts recruit the smaller, decrease threshold, slower-to-fatigue motor items.
When extra effort is required, the bigger, larger threshold, faster-to-fatigue motor items are known as upon. It makes excellent sense and explains why you'll be able to jog for an extended time as in comparison with sprinting, or why a lighter resistance will be moved for extra repetitions as in comparison with heavier resistance.
The "slow" versus "fast" muscle fiber classification is a misnomer and has created mayhem amongst each the scholarly-educated and the typical Joe Schmoe coach and trainee. Conventional knowledge suggests the smaller, sluggish muscle fibers contract slowly and isn't able to "fast" muscle contraction.
Similarly, bigger, quicker muscle fibers are regarded as the one fibers recruited for lightening-fast muscle exercise. Yes, sluggish fibers do contract comparatively slower than quick fibers, however the distinction is between 60 to 90 milliseconds. Yes, milliseconds. This distinction is just about negligible.
Understand the quick versus sluggish fiber classification doesn't solely consult with the pace of contraction. It additionally refers to a fiber’s fatigue capability. The bigger, better force-producing muscle fibers are quicker to fatigue as in comparison with sluggish fibers, which exert barely much less force-output however are slower to fatigue.
An explosive, bodyweight-only vertical bounce is a good instance:
A single maximum-effort bounce recruits each sluggish and quick fibers. Although it's high-effort, it creates minimal fatigue due to its brevity. Perform a number of jumps and fatigue will ultimately ensue due to the better demand and recruitment of upper threshold, quicker fatiguing fibers.
Now, bounce whereas holding heavy dumbbells or sporting a weighted vest. What occurs? The pace of motion and bounce peak will lower attributable to gravitational pull, however you may be utilizing extra muscle fibers. Jump a number of instances and fatigue will come sooner as a result of extra fibers are initially required (the faster-to-fatigue sort). This higher-demand occasion can't match the timeframe as leaping with out resistance.
Finally, use a five-repetition most (5RM) resistance in a squat or deadlift and attempt to bounce (which I don’t advocate, by the way in which). Because it's ultra-high demand, a big pool of muscle fibers can be recruited, the resistance can't be moved quick, and fatigue can be realized shortly.
Genetics, Body Type and Your Ability to Contract Muscle
Touching simply briefly on this matter, your physique sort, and the neuromuscular system can have an effect on your capability to contract the muscle and carry out, all different elements being equal:
Longer limbs could transfer slower than shorter limbs.
Having distinctive tendon origins and insertions could assist you to exert better power/pace as in comparison with poor origins/insertions.
Greater muscle mass could exert extra power than smaller mass.
Possessing extra high-threshold, quick muscle fibers could assist you to exert extra power than possessing extra slow-type fibers.
If you don’t “look the part” (i.e., small muscle groups, gangly, over-fat) however can contract muscle/exert power with above-average capability, you most likely have good neurological capability (muscle fiber-nervous system “hook-ups”).
  Training Mode Implications
If you despise gravity, transfer to the Moon.
Relatively heavy resistance requires the recruitment of many muscle fibers, together with the high-threshold, better force-generating fibers.
High-threshold/better force-generating fibers are utilized in explosive/pace actions outdoors the load room in sports activities competitors.
Relatively heavy resistance can't be moved quick. If you'll be able to transfer a resistance quick, it's gentle relative to your capability.
Although inherently unsafe, transferring comparatively quick with resistance can recruit and overload many fibers supplied most repetitions are achieved (i.e., purpose for full volitional muscle fatigue).
If a quick pace of motion had been necessary in resistance coaching, what quantity of resistance would you utilize and how briskly would you progress it? 35%, 50%, or 80% of a 1RM? 115, 360, or 600 levels per second?
You don’t have to maneuver quick when resistance coaching to develop energy. Power = power x distance/time. Get stronger, (enhance power) then apply your sports activities abilities/timing (maximize distance and time), which ends up in this:
Move quick when talent coaching, unabated by resistance. Refine and hone sport-specific abilities as they are going to be required in competitors.

When does old age begin? (Part 1 of Your Brain at 100 series)
This is part 1 of a series examing lessons in brain health learned from our elders — those folk who lived the longest and healthiest.
We’ve living longer, but how do our aging brains fare?
To answer this question, I’ve looked to two sources — those exceptionally old folks who remain in robust physical and mental health till the very end of their lives, and our evolutionary past.
Over millennia, Mother Nature equipped us to survive and thrive in the wild. Our brains evolved such that from womb to the tomb we’re required to move, eat well, sleep, immerse ourselves in nature, avoid stress, love and befriend, and seek meaning. These requirements neatly map onto the principles of everyday life followed by the world’s longest living people.
    When does old age begin?
We can’t seem to make up our minds, and the older we get, the further we move the goalposts marking the last season of our lives.
A 2009 survey of Americans asked participants when they believed someone grew ‘old’.
Young folks in their twenties believed said old age began at 60. Those under 50 put the threshold closer to 70, whereas those 65 and above said that the average person does not become old until turning 74.
Getting old wasn’t nearly as bad as people think it will be. Nor was it quite as good.
On the downside, one in four adults ages 65 surveyed reported memory loss. One in five had a serious illness, are no longer sexually active, or often feel sad or depressed, lonely or have trouble paying bills. One in ten felt like a burden.
On the upside, the same group said they have more time for hobbies, travel, volunteer work, and more financial security. Of all the good things about getting old, the best by far, according to older adults, is being able to spend more time with family members.
“Am I Old? Certainly not!”
One of my boys said to me recently he couldn’t imagine me as a little girl and how did it feel to finally be “old”. I told him I feel the same now as I did when I was 10.
“Am I Old? Certainly not!” This was the answer survey respondents gave too.
In fact, the older they got, the younger they said they feel. About half of those under 30 said they felt their age. But those who were 75 and older? Just 35% say they feel “old”.
It seems we remain on intimate terms with our much younger selves — I sometimes wonder how ten-year old me suddenly became forty-three?
We enter the end of our lifespan with our past woven intimately into our biology.
From birth, our neural architecture is shaped by life’s ups and downs, the decisions we made, the places where we lived, worked and learned, the meaning we’ve derived, and who we loved, gave life to, and travelled with through time. How we spend our early years will determine how we age.
More and more of us are living to into old age, and there has never been a better time in which to do so. Our large clever human brains have bequeathed us with modern medicine and tools with which we manage our reproductive health, avoid maternal and neonatal death, vaccinate against disease, prevent pain, treat infection and some cancers, and perform surgery if required.
One hundred years ago, women lived barely long enough to see out their 50s. A baby girl born today can expect to live to see out the first decades of the 22nd century.
Uncovering the secrets of exceptional longevity
On February 21, 1875, one year before the Alexander Graham Bell filed his patent for the telephone, a baby girl, Jeanne Louise Calment was born in Arles, France. She was alive to witness the invention of the aeroplane, cinema, and on a trip to Paris saw the Eiffel tower being built. When she was 13, Jeanne met Vincent Van Gogh; although apparently, she was less than impressed saying he was ”…very ugly, ungracious, impolite, sick…”.
In 1997, the same year Princess Diana died, Calment finally passed away. She was 122 years and 164 days old. Although blind, almost deaf, and confined to a wheelchair, Calment reportedly remained spirited and “alert as a hummingbird” till the end. The French called her “la doyenne de l’humanitè” (the elder of humankind) and she still holds the record for the world’s longest ever living human (although this has been recently challenged).
In April 2017, the latest longevity record holder, Emma Martina Luigia Morano of Vercelli, Italy, died aged 117. Born in November 1899, Morano was the last known living person who was born in the 1800s. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Morano followed the same extraordinary diet for around 90 years: three eggs per day (two raw, one cooked), fresh Italian pasta, and a dish of raw meat. The current longevity crown belongs to Polish Holocaust survivor Israel Kristal, who celebrated his 113th birthday in September 2017.
Once rare as diamonds, the oldest of the old are the fastest growing sector of our global population.
If you were born in 1900, the odds of living till age 100 were less than 1 in a million, and few people lived long enough see out the 1950s. For girls born into wealthy countries today, the odds of blowing out 100 candles on a cake are roughly 1 in 50.
Israel Kristal claims he doesn’t know the secret of his long life.
I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why. There have been smarter, stronger and better-looking men then me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost.
When asked her secrets, Jeanne Calment attributed her longevity to immunity to stress and a good attitude,
I wasn’t afraid of anything. I was often reproached for that … I took pleasure when I could, I acted clearly and morally and without regret. I’m very lucky.
Calment reportedly ate more than two pounds of chocolate a week, treated her skin with olive oil, rode a bicycle until she was 100, and only quit smoking when she was 117 because she became too proud to ask someone else to light her cigarettes. Known for her wit, she is widely reported as saying,
I’ve never had but one wrinkle, and I’m sitting on it.
Hard work, raw eggs, biking, and no regrets. We clamour to learn their secrets, and typically the oldest of the old love to share their long-won wisdom. Calment once quipped.
I wait. For death and journalists.
Blue Zones lessons for longevity
In another longevity project, National Geographic writer Dan Buettner together Professor Michel Poulain famously described five ‘Blue Zones’ around the globe where the residents live to exceptional old age. Despite being very different parts of the world, there are commonalities to the resident’s lifestyles.
Their longevity has nothing to do with brute discipline, diets, exercise programs or supplements… In Blue Zones areas around the world, longevity happens to people. It’s the result of the right environment that constantly nudges them into moving more, eating more plants and beans while eating less meat and sugar, socializing with the right people and living out their values. It’s that simple, really.
Residents of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, prioritise friendship and family, and they almost never work extra hours if it means they have to forego a good party. They also foster ‘plan de vida’ or ‘a reason to live’.
In Loma Linda, California, the strong sense of purpose, day of rest, no-smoking policy, and healthy diet practices of the local Seventh Day Adventist community has rubbed off on the health of the whole town.
Residents of the mountainous villages of Sardinia, Italy and the Greek island of Ikaria, nap, fast, grow their own food, and drink wine daily with friends. It’s thought the clean air, warm breezes and rugged terrain of the Mediterranean islands draw locals outdoors to move naturally.
The residents of the Japanese islands of Okinawa, home to the world’s longest living women, are dedicated to family. Okinawans practice ‘Hara hachi bu’, a reminder to stop eating when they’re 80% full, ‘Ikigai’, which roughly translates to “Why I wake up in the morning,” and form ‘Moais’, groups of five friends that remain committed to each other for live.
Buettner has distilled the lifestyle practices of Blue Zones into lessons for longevity. As he says, to make it to 100 you may have to “win the genetic lottery”, but the average person’s life expectancy can be increased by moving move, prioritising friends, family and social gatherings, eating less, drinking wine, and fostering a sense of purpose.
Sydney Centenarian Study lessons for longevity
Due to the rarity of extremely old folks, the Sydney Centenarian Study has partnered with a consortium of centenarian research teams from around the globe to pool their resources and data to enable more powerful conclusions to be drawn. Their data support the Blue Zones observations.
Charlene Levitan, who once headed up the Sydney Centenarian Study says,
What is emerging from the global research is that around 30% of longevity is contributed by genetics. The remaining 70% is to do with our lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet, exercise, and remaining socially integrated.
One of the strongest themes to emerge is related to the personality traits of resilience, adaptability and optimism.
Most of our centenarians will report optimism as a life-long personality characteristic.
This is an excerpt from my book The Women’s Brain Book.

HP ProBook 5330m Review
We often really need to chuckle when laptop makers talk about creating company methods look a lot more palatable to the staff members toting 'em.Soon after all,it really is not like we're about to stroll off the task since we don't such as appears to be like of that black box we have been assigned.Even so,laptop computer manufacturers are going away from their strategy to make their corporate systems search additional consistent with their sexier consumer cousins.Take the Lenovo ThinkPad X1,for example,a slimmed-down model of the firm's signature layout Dell Latitude E5530 Accu updated using a buttonless touchpad,Dolby audio, and also a much-maligned glossy exhibit.Toshiba, meanwhile, not too long ago revamped its line of business notebooks to seem like the lightweight Portege R705 - also a crossover hit.Which provides us towards the HP ProBook 5330m.This thirteen.3-incher provides a metal-clad human body and Beats Audio - a primary on an HP company equipment, but a staple throughout its client stable. And yet,the company's wooing the IT fellas, way too, having a matte screen, optional prepaid cellular broadband,Intel vPro engineering, and TPM circuitry. It scores major details for benefit, but can it dangle  Let's come across out.
Design
We'll be sincere: right after spending a few minutes with all the 5330m again in April,we arrived away while using the visceral experience that its two-tone keyboard deck, beige trackpad, and boxy form weren't specially attractive - enable by itself youthful. Therefore you really know what  We nonetheless never feel it truly is current, for every se,but immediately after each week of tests,we will at the least respect what a well-made device it is.An enormous aspect of that, obviously,is definitely the elements employed. With the exception of the bottom, the chassis Microsoft Surface Pro five Oplader as well as hinge are both equally fashioned out of durable aluminum. As for your underside,it truly is crafted from magnesium, whereas even some high-end notebooks revert to plastic, and it has a soft, rubbery complete. The bottom also appears to be like thoroughly clean, having a pop-out door housing the removable battery. It is really also negative, then, this laptop that tries so hard to be hip continue to manages to glimpse dated. Our big bone of contention has often been the strip of matte aluminum ringing the keyboard deck Asus FX502VM Oplader and palm rest. The contrast in between the brushed and clean metals and the light and darker greys is just one occupied combo, and would make the keyboard deck feel additional cramped than it is actually.Even if HP had opted for a completely brushed aluminum chassis, the 5330m might have even now seemed the portion of a really serious business notebook, only additional exquisite in comparison to the a single we are considering.Within the conclusion, plainly,it will come all the way down to notion. An HP rep explained the look as "timeless." We say it is stodgy. Also, one previous gripe which is neither right here nor there: what is up together with the gratuitous Beats Audio branding  You'll find the logos painted within the upper-right hand corner on the bezel, plus the front edge of the notebook - equally stinging annoyances because you can not do anything to eliminate them. And indeed,we all know the number of of you fellas experience about stickers, but if HP has some contractual obligation to advertise the hell out of its partnership Asus A32N1331 Accu with Dr.Dre,at least use a medium folks can dispose of at the time they unbox the laptop.
These quibbles apart,we had been pleasantly stunned by how light-weight the 5330m is.Specified its boxy 0.99-inch thick profile,we would not blame you in the event you guessed this thing felt significant. In fact,at 3.99 kilos it weighs more than the 3.7-pound ThinkPad X1,though the wedge-shaped X1 is substantially thicker at its chunkiest point. In truth, the 5330m's heft suggests it's going to really feel extra grounded once you utilize it with your lap.Not which the X1 ever slipped off even though we were typing, not surprisingly;it is just which the 5330m features a additional reassuring weight distribution. Rice is one of the great wonder foods.
While rice alone cannot keep you alive it should be an important part of your survival stores, especially if you’re on a budget.
A 10lb bag of rice is full of carbs and is cheaper than dirt. It’s like a 10lb bag of energy!
White rice is all starch (carbs) and metabolically equivalent to potatoes, white bread, pasta, flour and even raw sugar.
Starches are not completely digested by our bodies and the indigestible carbohydrates are not just neutral bulking agents, but have important physiologic effects, and contribute energy to the diet.
Starches are not all equal in their effects on blood glucose and lipids, but some studies have linked eating large amounts of white rice to an increased risk of diabetes.
This is why it is important to vary your diet and your food stores. You don’t just eat rice every day, do you? So don’t stockpile rice exclusively but also include lentils, corns, wheat, pastas, and beans.
The Best Rice
While brown rice may be more nutritious avoid storing it as the fats and oils in the husks will go rancid fairly quickly. Brown rice stored in mylar bags inside 5-gallon bucks with o2 absorbers stores about 6 months, whereas white rice stores roughly 20+ years in the same mylar bags.
How Much Do You Need
The easiest way to figure how much rice one person needs for one year is to determine how many cups of rice you want to eat every day and then divide that by how many cups there are in a pound of rice.
Why not figure it by calories, you ask through your screen? Because man cannot live by bread…err rice (or any simple carb) alone. For this reason, storing rice by calorie count alone is a mistake because it will not be your only calorie source. For most people with a varied stockpile of food 1/2 cup of rice per day is enough. Most people balk at this idea and end up throwing money away on unneeded food “just in case”.
Remember these are your emergency food stores, and not intended to be a feast. Your food stores are temporary and only intended to get you through until another sustainable food source can be found, such as a garden, so they should be eaten sparingly.
For the record, 1/2 cup of rice is about 300 calories. 1,500-2,000 calories/day will get you by just fine. Mixed with other foods such as beans, meat, and wheat, 1/2 cup per day will round out your new diet nicely.
There are roughly five 1/2 cup servings in 1lb of rice. This means for every 1lb of rice you have 5 days of stored rice, so by doing some simple math we find that 73lbs of rice will last one person an entire year and a family of 4 will need about 300lbs of rice, 292lbs to be exact.
The Do It Yourself Way
You should buy your white rice in bulk 50lbs bags to save money.
Large warehouse chains like Costco and Sam’s Club always have plenty of 50lb bags laying around. You can also try your local Asian marketplace for great deals on bulk rice.
Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need:
Several food grade (best) or Home Depot/Lowes (they’ll work) 5-gallon buckets. Each bucket will hold roughly 35 lbs of rice.
5-gallon mylar bags
Oxygen absorber packets (1,000 cc per piece)
Bag sealer (or just a flat iron or an iron)
Before we begin let me clarify a few things. You do not need food grade buckets and if money is tight you can use any new bucket. This is because you’re food will be inside a air-proof mylar bag, so if you’re planning to skip the mylar (bad idea) then you’ll want to make sure you use food grade buckets.
Don’t spend money on fancy lids, a regular snap on lid will work just fine. You do not need a $10 screw on super sealer lid so save your money. The mylar will do the final air-tight sealing and you will not open your buckets enough to warrant an expensive screw on lid.
Do not buy O2 absorbers in bulk thinking that you will save them. Buy only what you need and buy them new for every batch. Oxygen absorbers are highly reactive little tablets, so much so that they will activate and go bad even in their vacuum sealed packaging.
On the mylar…. Mylar bags are cheap and can be bought from Amazon for a little bit of nothing per cu ft. They offer a vital extra layer of protection from insects and punctures, ensure that your air-tight seal will really be air-tight, and mylar protects your food from off-gassing and flavors given off from the plastic buckets.
Mylar is your insurance policy that in 5, 10, 20 years you can still open your emergency food stores and still actually eat it. Don’t be penny-smart and dollar-foolish here.
Let’s Get Started
Clean your buckets and dry them thoroughly. Place a mylar bag inside one of the buckets.
Add a 1,000 cc O2 absorber in the bottom of the mylar bag. Slowly pour your rice into the mylar bag, lifting up and down on it as you pour to ensure all the cracks and crevices are filled in.
Once the bag is full (leave a 1-2″ air gap from the top of the bucket) add another 1,000 cc O2 absorber.  Squeeze all the air out of the top of the bag and either use a clamshell sealer or an iron to seal your mylar bag.
Snap the lid on your bucket and store it in a cool (room temp or below) and dry (minimum humidity) place such as a basement or closet.
Your first thought may be a root cellar, but the humidity may vary too much, and don’t even think about storing it in a hot attic. Garages are usually a bad idea too because they are more likely to get insects and rats and their temps usually get too high for storing food.
Remember, your biggest enemies are heat, moisture, and insects.
More in-depth info on Food Storage with Mylar…
What is Mylar?
The trade name for Mylar is biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate.  It was originally produced in the 1950s and is used for things like insulation, solar filters, blueprints, and even kites.
Why Mylar is Great for Long-Term Food Storage
As far as food storage goes, Mylar is amazing because it is:
Non-porous
Impermeable to gas
Reflects light
Flexible
Durable and puncture-resistant
Cheap
Easy to use
There are certainly other packing materials you can use for long-term food storage, but they tend to have a higher learning curve, are more expensive, or simply not as good as Mylar.
Mylar vs. Vacuum Sealing
Many people confuse Mylar bag storage with vacuum-sealing.  They are completely different processes and get different results.
With vacuum-sealing, you are using a machine like a FoodSaver (Amazon Link) to suck air out of the bag while sealing it. While this does have benefits (like being cheap and fairly easy to do), it isn’t the best option for long-term food storage.
Vacuum-sealed bags:
Leak: The plastic bags used in vacuum sealing are porous. You can’t see the little holes but, over time, vacuum sealed bags will allow air to leak through.
Don’t remove all oxygen: Vacuum sealing will remove most air (which includes oxygen and nitrogen) from the package. However, some air will remain.
Allow light through: The bags used in vacuum-sealing are clear – which is great if you want to see what’s packaged inside, but not great if you want to prevent food degradation from light.
By comparison, Mylar bags will not leak. When used with oxygen absorbers, virtually all oxygen will be removed. Finally, Mylar has a foil layer which blocks 100% of light from coming through.
This doesn’t mean that vacuum-sealing isn’t good for food storage.  Vacuum-sealing can increase shelf life of foods by 3-5 times.  But, when it is long-term storage that you want (5+ years), then Mylar is the way to go.
What Foods Can You Store in Mylar Bags?
Any dry, low-fat food can be stored in Mylar bags.  That means things like:
Dehydrated fruits and veggies
Flour
Grains
Pasta
Sugar
Dried beans
Powdered milk
Cereal
Spices
Remember the key words here are dry and low-fat.  Any food which has moisture in it may start to go bad in the Mylar bag.
The same goes for foods which have fat in them – the fat will cause the foods to go rancid in around 3-12 months.
Not Suitable for Long-Term (5+ Years) Storage
These foods can still be stored in Mylar bags, but you’ll have to rotate through them about every 2-5 years (depending on the food).
Whole-wheat flour
Pearl barley
Brown rice
Brown sugar
Chips and greasy junk food
Granola
Dried meat/jerky
Nuts
Seeds
Fresh or wet foods
Dried eggs
Milled grains (other than oats)
Any dehydrated fruit or veggie which is not so dry that it snaps when bent!
Mylar Bags and Botulism Risk
If the Mylar bag is bulging (a sign that bacteria is growing inside), then don’t eat its contents!
Botulism is usually only talked about in regards to home canning.  However, because the botulism bacteria grows in no/low oxygen environments, it could also grow in Mylar bags packaged with oxygen absorbers.
Botulism requires moisture of 35% to grow.  However, to play it safe, virtually all food preservation guides will say that food must have 10% or less moisture to be packaged in airtight containers with oxygen absorbers. (1)
This shouldn’t scare you away from self-storing foods with oxygen absorbers.  Just make sure you aren’t storing any moist foods in Mylar with oxygen absorbers for the long-term.
Some moist foods – such as dehydrated fruits — can still be stored in Mylar bags. They will be fine for the semi-long term (such as up to five years).  Home dehydrated fruits and veggies just need to be so dry that they snap when bent.
The good news is that botulism toxin (which causes the disease) can be easily destroyed by boiling for 10 minutes. (2)  Many of the foods which get stored for long-term need to be boiled anyway (dry beans, dry grains, etc.), so this in theory would kill any contaminants.
However, that doesn’t mean you should eat any foods which you suspect are contaminated with botulism.  If the Mylar bag is bulging (a sign that bacteria is growing inside), then don’t eat its contents!
Shelf-Life of Foods in Mylar Bags
When trying to figure out how long foods will last in Mylar bags, you will see a lot of different ranges given.   Here’s why it is so difficult to give an exact number of years that food will last.
1. Nutrients Break Down Long before the Food Goes Bad
Part of the reason for these varying shelf-life dates is because nutrients can break down.  For example, the nutrients in rice may start to degrade after 10 years.  However, the rice will still be safe to eat for approximately 30 years.
2. Mylar is a New Product
The process of checking how long a food will last is called shelf life testing. Big manufacturers are required to do shelf-life testing.  However, aside for a few studies on canned foods, there haven’t been any tests on how long food can last.
Also, consider that Mylar is a relatively new product (it was made in the 1950s).  We think some foods will last 30+ years in Mylar, but I don’t know of anyone who actually tested food that they packaged in the 1980s!
3. It Depends on Packaging Conditions
Mylar only protects food from degradation due to oxygen and light.  Assuming that you used oxygen absorbers correctly and properly sealed the bag, you still have to worry about degradation from heat and moisture.
According to the USDA, each 10.08 degree F increase in temperature will half the storage life of seeds.  This applies to other foods too.  So, if you are keeping your Mylar bags in a cool area (such as a root cellar), they will last longer than if stored in a hot area (such as your garage).
With these factors in mind, here is what you can reasonably expect in terms of shelf-life for foods in Mylar bags.
Food Type Shelf-Life (in sealed Mylar bag with oxygen absorbers) Hard Whole Grains (Dry corn, buckwheat, hard red wheat, soft white wheat, kamut, durum wheat, spelt) 10+ years Soft Whole Grains (Oats, quinoa, rye, barley) 8+ years Professionally-Dehydrated Vegetables 10-20 years Professionally-Dehydrated Fruits* 10-15 years Home-Dehydrated Fruits and Veggies* 2-5 years Freeze-Dried Fruits and Vegetables 25 years Legumes (Beans, lentils, chickpeas, split peas) 25+ years White Rice 10-30 years Brown Rice 2-5 years White Flour 10-15 years Whole-Wheat Flour 10 years Corn Meal 5-10 years Potato Flakes 30 years Pasta 20-30 years Dry Non-Fat Milk 15 years Cheese Powder 10-15 years Powdered Eggs 5-10 years Nuts ** 1-5 years Granola 1 year Yeast 3-5 years TVP 10-15 years Baking Soda, Baking Powder 30 years Sugar Indefinitely Honey Indefinitely Salt Indefinitely
(Sources: 4, 5)
*Dehydrated Fruits and Vegetables in Mylar Bags
Most dehydrated fruits and veggies usually aren’t suitable for long-term storage.  They simply contain too much moisture.
Many people report that their dehydrated fruits/veggies last much longer than 5 years.  However, it’s important that they have very low moisture (10% or less) before storage. That means the fruit/veggie will snap when bent.
Some people also recommend using a desiccant to remove moisture from the dehydrated fruits/veggies before packaging.  More on this later.
**Nuts and Seeds in Mylar Bags
Putting nuts and seeds in Mylar bags will extend their shelf life.  However, because they contain so much oil, they will start to go rancid.
Most people put the shelf life of nuts/seeds in Mylar at about 2 years.  However, some nuts and seeds will last longer than this even outside of a Mylar bag.  The key is keeping the temperature low.
Since nuts are so expensive, I wouldn’t want to risk having an entire batch get destroyed. Only package as much as you actually eat and rotate through them regularly!
Removing Oxygen
Mylar bags only work for long-term food storage if the oxygen has been removed from the bags.  To do this, you need to use oxygen absorbers.
Oxygen absorbers are little packages containing iron.  When you put the oxygen absorber (OA) into an airtight container, the oxygen molecules “stick” to the iron.  OAs can reduce the amount of oxygen in a container to less than 0.01%. (6)
Keep in mind that air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and about 1% other gases.  Oxygen absorbers only remove the oxygen. The nitrogen will remain, thus you often won’t get a vacuum seal.  However, nitrogen does not cause food to spoil.
Note that not all foods are oxygen sensitive.  For example, whole grains, peas, and beans aren’t too sensitive to oxygen.  If you plan on using the foods within 5 years, there won’t be too much difference in freshness regardless of whether you use an OA or not.
However, oxygen absorbers do protect against pests and have other benefits.  Since OAs are pretty cheap, it is smart to use them anyway.
  Benefits to Using Oxygen Absorbers:
Keeps food from degrading due to oxidation
Prevent mold and bacteria from growing on the food (mold and most bacteria require oxygen to grow)
Preserve flavor
Prevent vitamins from being destroyed by oxidation
Kill pests (tiny pest eggs which are invisible to the eye may be on your food; without oxygen, they cannot hatch)
Foods which Should NOT Be Stored with Oxygen Absorbers
Salt: Will become rock hard if stored with an OA
Sugar: Also will become rock hard; brown sugar also contains too much moisture for storage with OAs
Baking soda/baking powder: These may explode when stored with OAs
Wet foods: Foods with a moisture of 35% or more can grow botulism in airless environments. To play it safe, it is recommended that foods stored with OAs have 10% or less moisture.
Oxygen Absorbers vs. Gas Purging/Nitrogen Flushing
I’ve recently come across many guides and videos about gas purging (aka nitrogen flushing) Mylar bags.  The basic idea is that you use a special machine to force nitrogen gas into the package.  The nitrogen flushes out any oxygen. Then you seal the package so only nitrogen remains.
Nitrogen flushing is used by some food manufacturers to keep their greasy foods (such as chips) fresh for a long time.  That’s why bags of chips are puffy when you get them.
However, unless you have access to professional equipment, nitrogen flushing is very difficult to do! You have to displace all of the oxygen and make sure none gets back into the bag before you seal it.
Packaging with oxygen absorbers is much easier, and leaves just nitrogen in the packaging.  Don’t mess with what works – use oxygen absorbers for your home food storage and leave nitrogen flushing to the experts. (7, 8, 9)
How Many Oxygen Absorbers To Use?
Here is where things can get confusing: For food storage to be successful, you need to have enough OAs to absorb all of the oxygen in the Mylar bags.
Oxygen is in the Mylar bag in two ways:
In the space between the food
Inside the actual food
To figure out the correct amount of OAs you can do some tricky math or just use our handy graphic and table instead. (I have included the math in a dropdown for those who are interested)
Oxygen Absorbers – The Math
As Fresh Pack points out, there can be a surprising amount of oxygen within the actual food. For example, dry foods like TVP contain a lot of air inside of them.  The same goes with dry beans.
They also point out that there is mistaken information about how density affects air amount.  The idea that “items with small particles (like flour) are ‘dense’ and have less air volume” is FALSE.  Here is why:
“A pool filled with marbles will have the same interstitial air volume as one filled with basketballs. Yes, the basketballs will have much larger pockets of air, but there are far fewer of them. Think of a checkerboard with just 2 large black squares and 2 large white squares… ½ of it’s area is black and ½ white. What if it had 100 small black squares and 100 small white ones? 1000? Even with tiny squares it is still ½ black and ½ white as long as the squares are all a uniform size.
What does matter is particle size distribution, or in other words, whether you have particles that are all a uniform size or if you have a lot of particles of different sizes. If you have a pool filled with basketballs AND marbles, the marbles can fill in all the large pockets of air. So, products with uniform particle sizes will have more interstitial air than products with a greater distribution of particle sizes.”
Calculating How Much Air is in the Container
To figure out how much air will remain between the food spaces in a filled Mylar bag, you can do this test:
Put 1 cup of product in a large measuring cup.
Add 2 cups of water.
See how many cups you get total (the amount won’t be 3 cups because the water is filling in the spaces between the product).
Calculate: 3 cups – (how many cups total you got)
The answer is how much of the product was air. For example, let’s say that you got 2.5 cups total: 3 cups – 2.5 = 0.5 cups.  Since 0.5 = 50%, that means 50% of the product was air.
With this information, you can do a fairly exact calculation of how many oxygen absorbers you need.  This requires some more math:
Figure out how much air your Mylar bag holds. For example, a 1 gallon Mylar bag holds 3785 cubic centimeters (cc’s).
Determine how much air will be left in the bag once filled by product. For example, if you determined that 50% of the product was air, then you’d have 1893cc of air space.
Only about 21% of air is actually comprised of oxygen (the rest is mostly nitrogen). So, calculate 21% of your air space.  For example: 0.21x1893cc= 398cc.
*Some products like beans contain a lot of air inside of them.  For the water test to work, you have to let them sit for at least 6 hours so they absorb the water. Note also that beans require a lot more oxygen absorbers than typically shown in charts.
  Top Tip
It is always best to play it safe – use more oxygen absorbers than you think you need!  Using extra oxygen absorbers won’t impact the food. OAs are cheap,  better to  spend an extra 25 cents on an additional oxygen absorber than throw away 5 gallons of food when it’s needed most.
  Food Type 1 quart 1 gallon 5 gallon Beans, lentils, split peas 125-150cc 500-600cc 2500-3000cc Rice 100cc 400cc 2000cc Flour 100cc 400cc 2000cc Instant mixes and powders 100cc 400cc 2000cc Coffee beans 100cc 400cc 2000cc Pasta 125cc 625cc 2500cc Cereal 125cc 625cc 2500cc Instant potatoes 125cc 625cc 2500cc Whole grains (barley, corn, wheat, oats) 125cc 625cc 2500cc
How to Save Unused Oxygen Absorbers
The moment you take oxygen absorbers out of the package, they will start to absorb oxygen. You must work quickly!
The moment you take oxygen absorbers out of the package, they will start to absorb oxygen. After around 2-4 hours, they’ll have absorbed their maximum capacity of oxygen.
It is important that you have a plan on what to do with any unused oxygen absorbers before you begin working.
Ideally, you will reseal oxygen absorbers in the packaging they came in.  Then you vacuum seal them.
If this isn’t an option, you can also store unused oxygen absorbers in a mason jar.  Fill up any extra space in the jar with marbles (or something similar).  The less air that is in the jars, the less air the unused OAs will absorb.   Be sure to seal the jar tightly!
How to Tell If Your Oxygen Absorbers Are Still Good
If you buy OAs from a reputable company, they should be good. We like the supplier DiscountMylarBags, they are the cheapest around and provide good quality products. They also sell on Amazon if you prefer to shop there)
They will arrive in a vacuum-sealed package.  Most oxygen absorbers have a “margin for error” added into their abilities (DiscountMylarBags use ShieldPro absorbers they absorb 200 to 300% of their rating).  So, they will actually absorb more than specified.  This is so you can have a good 10-20 minutes to work with the OAs and not have that air exposure count against you.
Here’s how you can check:
They arrive in a vacuum-sealed package.
The oxygen indicator is pink or red and not blue.
The packets feel soft and not crunchy.
Sealing Mylar Bags
The trickiest part of using Mylar bags for long-term food storage is sealing them.  They must be sealed with heat in order to create an air-tight seal.  Even the Mylar bags with zip seals still need to be heat sealed (the zip is just there for convenience).
According to Top Mylar, you need a temperature of around 375-425 degrees F to get a good seal. Thicker Mylar bags will require a higher temperature.
There are 4 main ways that you can seal a Mylar bag:
1. Clamshell Heat Sealer
This is by far the easiest way to seal a Mylar bag.  They are great because they are hand-held.  They also squeeze, which helps grip the bag.
It makes it very easy to close the last 2 inches of the Mylar bag after you’ve squeezed out the air.
This clamshell sealer is a bit pricey, but it is very easy to use.
It has two heat settings.  The higher one is 410F, which is perfect for sealing Mylar bags.
2.  Impulse Sealer
I personally wouldn’t recommend impulse sealers.  Not only are they expensive, but they are designed to seal an entire bag at once.
Ideally, you should seal most of the Mylar bag, push the air out, and then seal the last 2 inches.  This takes some practice with an impulse sealer.
There are some affordable impulse sealers available which get good reviews. For example, this one by Metronic is well liked and doesn’t cost much.
  3. Hair-Straightening Iron
While I personally don’t have experience using one of these for sealing Mylar bags, it seems like it would be better than a normal iron.  You’d be able to keep the bag vertical so bits of produc
t don’t get into the seal area.
Just make sure you get a hair-straightening iron with adjustable heat settings.  This one, for example, gets up to 450 degrees F at the highest setting.
  4. Home Iron
If you’d rather not buy a special product for sealing your Mylar bags, a home iron will work.   You’ll need to have a piece of wood to put the Mylar bag against while sealing.
Also be warned that, since you’ll be sealing the bag as it lies horizontally (as opposed to being able to keep it vertical), you might end up with bits of product shifting into the area you are trying to seal.
It’s not impossible to do. However, it can be a bit frustrating – especially when you are trying to work fast because of the oxygen absorbers!
Step-By-Step Instructions
Materials Checklist
Food that you will be storing
Mylar bags
Oxygen absorbers
Bucket or container (that you will be putting the Mylar bags into)
Sealer (clamshell sealer, iron, hair straightening iron)
Work gloves
A piece of wood with a towel wrapped around it (to serve as an ironing board if using an iron for sealing)
Scoop or funnel
Permanent marker for labeling
Mason jar (or another way to store unused oxygen absorbers)
Step 1: Preparation
It is really important that you get everything set up in an assembly line.  You can take your time filling up the Mylar bags.  But, once you open those oxygen absorbers, you need to seal them quickly!
Open Mylar bags and put each in a bucket/container
Line up the containers
Make sure your sealer has a cord long enough to reach the buckets
*If you are going to put lots of smaller Mylar bags into one bucket, then you obviously won’t be propping up one bag per storage container.  It’s really helpful to have the bags propped up during the process.  Consider rigging a shelf system for holding the bags, or bust out all of your Tupperware to use as holding trays for the open Mylar bags.
Step 2: Loading the Food
Using a scoop or a funnel, fill up the Mylar bags with food. You’ll need to give the bags a good shake to ensure the food particles are settled (which means more food per bag and less air).
Fill the bags to about 4-5 inches from the top. Make sure you don’t overfill the bag or it will be very difficult to seal.
Label the bags and container with the contents plus the date.
Tips
If you are using 7.5mil Mylar bags, wear gloves! The bags are sharp and can easily slice your fingers!
To protect the label from rubbing off, put a strip of clear packing tape over it.
Step 3: Partially Seal Bags
Let your sealer heat up.  Irons and hair-straightening irons need to be on the highest setting. Seal all but the last 2 inches of the Mylar bag. Make sure there aren’t any little pieces of food in the seal.
It is also smart to wear gloves during sealing.  The sealer can make the Mylar bag get very hot and burn your fingers!
If Using an Iron: The easiest way to seal with an iron is to put your 2×4 over the rim of the 5-gallon bucket.  This will make an ironing board so you can seal the bag without having to lift it out or turn it horizontal.  Once you’ve sealed one bag, then just move the board to another bucket.  You’ll definitely want help – one person moves the board and the other does the sealing. Tip: Make sure you seal as close to the top of the bag as possible.  That way you’ll have room to reseal the bag again.
Step 4: Add Oxygen Absorbers
It takes about 2-4 hours for an oxygen absorber to do its job.  However, you should really try to get your bags sealed as quickly as possible (within 10 minutes, 20 tops).  Otherwise, you risk the OA absorbing too much outside air and not being able to absorb all the oxygen in your Mylar bag. Tip: Before you open your oxygen absorbers, mark each bag with how many OAs the bag needs.  This will speed up the process.
Step 5: Fully Seal the Bag
As soon as you’ve added oxygen absorbers, you need to quickly seal the bag.  Press the bags to get out as much air as you can.  Then seal the remaining 2 inches.
Step 6: Checking the Seal
Wait at least one day.  Then go and check on your Mylar bags.  Look at the seal and see if you can squeeze any air through them.
When oxygen absorbers have done their job, the bag may look “sucked up” or vacuum-sealed.  However, since so much of air is actually nitrogen, it is possible for the bag to be properly sealed but not sucked down.
Step 7: Seal Buckets or Containers
Once you are sure that the seal is good, you can close up your buckets/containers and put them for long-term storage.
Ideally, you will store them in a cool place which is accessible during an emergency (for example, you wouldn’t want all your emergency food in the basement during a flood!).
Which Mylar Bags to Use?
Aside from the brand, there are a few key considerations when choosing which Mylar bags to use: size, thickness, and whether you want zip tops.
Size
Mylar bags come in various sizes, typically ranging from 1 pint to 6 gallons.  To give you an idea, a 1-gallon Mylar bag will hold about 6-7lbs of rice. A 5-gallon Mylar bag will hold about 33lbs of rice.
That’s a lot of rice!
If you are only doing long-term food storage for your family, you probably don’t need anything larger than 1 gallon Mylar bags.
Yes, you will need more food than this – but it is probably smarter to store the food in smaller bags.
Imagine that a disaster has occurred.  If you opened up a 5 gallon bag of rice, there is no way you could eat it all before the food got destroyed (by water, rodents, etc.).
Also consider how you’d use the food.  Eating 6lbs worth of rice might be feasible, but 6lbs of dehydrated onions?  You’d be much better off putting the dehydrated onions in a smaller bag.
The downside, of course, is that it takes more work to store food in smaller bags. You’ll also have to do a lot more planning to figure out how you’ll divide up the food.
How Much Food Will Fit in a Mylar Bag?
  Food Type 1 quart 1 gallon Rice 5-7.3lbs 25-37lbs Whole Grain White Wheat 5-7.5lbs 25-38lbs Flour 5lbs 25-33lbs Cornmeal 5-6lbs 33lbs Beans (black, pinto, white, etc.) 5-7lbs 25-40lbs Lentils 7lbs 35-36lbs Macaroni 4lbs 20-21lbs Potato Flakes 2.5lbs 12-13lbs Diced Dried Carrots 3.3lbs 16-17lbs Dry Milk 5-6lbs 29-30lbs Powdered Eggs 4.2lbs 20-21lbs

*How much food you can fit in a Mylar bag depends on a lot of factors.
How big the food you are trying to store is (for example, some beans are smaller than others).
How well you shake the food to pack it down and how high you fill the bag. It’s easier to seal a bag which isn’t completely full.
You’ll be able to fit more food in thinner Mylar bags because they are more flexible.
  Thickness
Mylar bags come in various thicknesses, with 4.3mil and 7.5mil being the most popular.  The 7.5mil bags will hold up against damage better.  However, they aren’t as flexible.
Because the thick bags are so much stiffer, you probably won’t be able to get as much food in them as a thinner bag.
Also note that the 7.5mil bags are sharp! You should wear gloves when working with them so you don’t slice your fingers.
Mylar Bags with Zip Tops
There are some Mylar bags which have zip tops.  The zip top does NOT replace heat sealing.  However, it is great for convenience.
During the sealing process, you can first squeeze the air out and zip lock it before heat sealing.  It prevents little pieces of product from getting into the seal.
Once the bag is open, the zip is also great for closing the bag while you use the contents.
