I recently found a copy of the graphic novel version of Straight on Til Morning at my local used bookstore and got a great deal so I wanted to share a few of my likes, dislikes, and general observations. I’d been meaning to write up a proper review of the book for awhile now but have been SUPER behind. Anyway, the graphic novel follows the book pretty closely and I’ll be sharing some images from it, so this WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS for those of you who haven’t read it.

First off, the artwork for the graphic novel is beautiful and some scenes are illustrated in a really creative way. For example, I love the depiction of this particular scene where Wendy is writing her stories and Hook sort of…comes to life off the page.

I also really love that while (most of) the characters are still recognizably Disney’s version…they also look a tad more realistic and have some of the illustrator’s own personal interpretation mixed in.

George Darling is a great example. In the graphic novel he is slimmer than in the film and looks remarkably like J.M. Barrie…which I have to consider was probably intentional.

And then there’s the Lost Boys in their animal costumes…Tootles, Skipper (excuse me, this is Nibs erasure—you can add Skipper but don’t just eliminate Nibs!), Slightly, Cubby, and the Twins.

The pirates, however, are a totally different story. Who the heck are these guys???

Anyway… at least they get Hook’s personality right. I love this bit, in particular, where one of the pirates gets a little rough with Wendy and Hook is having none of it. Also, the idea of Hook capturing Wendy to be a mother to the crew is a nice nod to the book.

One big complaint I do have is that the characters are, on occasion, a little TOO self-aware. Like in this scene where one of the pirates makes a sort of on-the-nose observation about Hook’s feud with Pan.

But I will admit, I did cackle at Hook’s reaction.

He said would you please stop trying to psychoanalyze me and look for symbolism and just let the story be about a boy and a pirate? (Hook, how do you even know who Freud is??)

You may have noticed by now that I haven’t said anything about Peter… That’s because Peter barely features in the story at all and honestly when he does show up, he’s…kinda useless and clueless. Now, admittedly, Wendy is meant to be older in this (around 16) so of course, it’s reasonable to think she might not quite view him the same way she did at 12…but in having her team up with Tink to do all the heavy-lifting of the plot (because, ya know, girlpower and all that), Peter sort of ends up not really doing anything. I’d almost rather have an evil Pan, as annoying as that trope is because at least then he actually does something. In this story, it truly feels like Wendy has just…outgrown Peter altogether. And that hurts.

Speaking of which…ya know what hurts even more for me as a Hook fan? THIS.

This poor man is curled up on the deck in the fetal position, terrified of a crocodile who has been long-dead, crying out for a best friend who never even existed except inside his own mind because he was so alone that he made him up.

O W !! Why would you do this to me, Disney?!

It ends for Hook with the crew deciding to drop him off somewhere with enough gold to pay for his keep and hire a caretaker because he’s so mentally unstable they don’t trust him to live by himself.

I hate to say it, but honestly, watching him die would be less painful. At least that would be over with fairly quickly. This just hurts.

But everyone else lives happily ever after, so it’s okay, right? Right??? 😫😭 (Don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here in the corner, crying over my pirate boy.)

Imagine This #3 - Dragon

You face the huge dragon who clearly isn't intimidated by you and take a deep breath. Bars separate you, but that doesn't mean you're safe. His head rests comfortably on his paws as he stares back. You're in awe of the sheer size of him and the story his body tells; he has a hunch where his back was once broken, tough, leathery skin where scales have been ripped clean off, and pale scars on his haunches from the swords of valiant knights.

He huffs and smoke puffs all around you, stinging your eyes.

"I have been through torture you can't imagine. I have been attacked, starved, beaten, humiliated. What makes you think you will be the one to break me, scrawny thing?"

This is your moment. You drop into a bow and blurt out the words you had been repeating to yourself the entire walk over.

"I am not here to conquer you, mighty dragon! I have come to propose a trade!"

A rumbling laugh of disbelief from the great creature.

"YOU?"

He reaches through the bars and taps the blunt edge of a claw as big as your body ever so gently on the top of your head. You know the dragon is referencing your appearance. You look like you crawled through a ditch to get here. You did and it was the sewers, actually. Breaking into an arena isn't an easy task. Realistically if there's anyone with even the slightest possibility of offering the ancient creature his freedom, it shouldn't be you.

But people constantly underestimate you. You haven't lived this long on sheer luck.

"Yes, me." You straighten to your full height and look the dragon in his golden eyes. "I want revenge with something big and you're the only one who can help me. In return, I can give you your freedom."

The dragon just stares at you. He doesn't buy your offer one bit. You want to press on, but someone is approaching and you have to get out of sight. There's a party going on, which gives you the perfect opportunity to steal the keys to his cage, first of all. Otherwise, neither of you is going anywhere.

However, a mere hour later your plan topples when you get caught. Guess the punishment you get? Death by dragon.

The beast chortles when you are thrown into his cage, looming over you.

"So much for your plan. I suppose I should eat you now."

"Wait! I propose a different temporary trade!" You squeak.

The dragon rolls his eyes and mutters, "Why am I entertaining this?"

You dig around in your satchel and pull out something wrapped in a napkin. Another stolen item you were planning to savor later. Right now, it's your only hope.

"I'll trade this delectable sandwich in exchange for my life," you say with your sweetest, most persuasive grin. "And to sweeten the deal, a set of keys to your cage."

You pull the keys out of your boot. The guards didn't bother searching there, that's how filthy they are.

The dragon tilts his head, considering. He's been locked up for decades.

"You have yourself a deal," he says.

Imagine this duo: a grumpy ancient dragon with a bouncy sunshine sidekick and they end up going on some kind of crazy adventure together. 😫

I mean, in the myths so many gods do it terrible things... Apollo on Cassandra and Marsyas, Dionysus on Pentheus and Orpheus, Artemis on Kallisto, Hera on Zeus's lovers and offsprings...

The most important thing to remember about the myths is not to take them literally. The myths are just that: myths. They are stories written over 2,000 years ago in a culture where many of these things were, unfortunately, considered normal. These days, we look back and frown upon these things, but back then, it was widely accepted.

The myths are not "The Bible" of Hellenic worship. Mythic literalism isn't encouraged. The myths were meant to explain things that happened in nature or why we should respect the gods (due to their power and influence), but they are not meant to be taken literally. There are lessons to be learned from them, such as to not be rude to others or to be kind to strangers and guests, but in my opinion, they're not literal representations of the gods.

In my experience, the gods are significantly different from how they're represented in the myths. Apollo, for example, is extremely kind, respectful, and doesn't overstep the boundaries that I've set. He's helped me through some of the darkest moments in my life and has been there for me right after I was SA'ed. As another example, Zeus helped me escape from a horrible abuser. He helped me cut all ties with them and protected me from their influence. He forgave past transgressions that I had made under the abuser's manipulation. He was kind, understanding, and made me feel safe. Hera, as another example, helped my family when I had prayed for her assistance during a time where my family's future was entirely uncertain. She came to me with a warm, motherly energy, and even though I had been nervous, her presence was reassuring.

Ultimately, it's your choice if you want to take the myths literally; I'm not going to stop you or anyone else from doing so. However, I disagree strongly with that point of view. The gods have proven themselves, in my experience, to be nothing but compassionate, accepting, and respectful. They have lent me their aid freely and helped me grow into a more mature, better person. I don't believe we're meant to take the myths so literally. I think the myths are stories, written thousands of years before our lifetimes, by people who thought atrocious actions were ok based on the culture they stemmed from.

I hope this clarified my opinions on the matter, and maybe it brought you some peace of mind. Take care, Nonny, and best of luck on your journey. 🧡

Guess who found your fic on ao3 at 11pm, not noticing the 108k words on the bottom and got so hooked even by the half quarter of the first chapter that resulted in her staying awake until 10 am, reading all 108k words in one sitting. Yes me. Me, who got so hooked she read it all in one sitting. Me, who’s now so emotionally attached to this fic that she’s anxious about your comments under the chapters, stating that THE MAIN PLOT hasn’t even STARTED YET. Me, who knows DAMN WELL the little caterpillars and butterflies and the moths story Megumi and y/n read out is for sure foreshadowing. Me, who’s noticed several butterfly symbolism used over the course of the story. Me, who screamed into her pillow when it was stated that y/n’a dress resembled a butterfly. Me, who’s seen your comment replying to someone, stating that there MIGHT be some kind of drifting apart. Me, who’s well ware of the Heavy Angst tag on the fic. Me, who knows that an author who’s this good at delivering humor and fluff is gonna DESTROY me when the angst is gonna be written. Me, who half regrets now that she’s discovered the story because she’s scared of all that’s about to come.

You seriously have a way with words, dialogue, symbolism, humor, the bond between every character. It’s not so simple to put more than 5 characters in a setting and deal with them all while trying to make it as natural as possible but you SOMEHOW do it SO WELL. I’m just. God. All the thoughts I have on this fic would maybe even rival the 108k words you’ve written up until now but I don’t have the capacity to put them into words as well as you do.

just know that this fic impacted me so much, so badly, years from now on after it's finished, I'll still think about it and re-read it.

Her side was in agony, searing white hot pain flooding the lower end of her body. Zdinarsk did not expect to live from that, Sully’s crazy bitch shot a long arrow into her and yet she still stands. Barely. All the soldier could think of is whether the rest of her team is ok, she knew not all of them survived, seeing one of her comrades just a few feet from her, lying on his front and a puddle of blood surrounding his body proved that.

Her heart quickened and her breath became shallow, these where her brothers. They fought together on Earth, they shared memories of each other that not many people get the pleasure of. They laughed together, cried together, and now they die together.

A small thump sounded behind where she sat, slouched against some crates by the edge of the SeaDragon. Zdinarsk had no energy to fight, her gun long forgotten by her feet, turning her head at the sound and glancing behind part of the crate she saw a woman. A Na’vi woman. She was checking the pulse of one of the recoms a bit further down. The savage was teal like the other islanders, with the weird tail and funny arms. Z-Dog thought to grab her gun and shoot her but she decided not to, seeing the alien move around towards some humans and doing the same.

What was she doing?

___ glanced around the ship checking for survivors, she wasn’t in Tonowari’s clan. She didn’t live in Awa’atlu but another island more further away, her Tsahìk knew of this attack against the people and like any other Na’vi she was angry, but Eywa has spoken, talked of redemption in blue demons. She was one of the best warriors in her clan and was sent with a few others to look for these strangers, to help guide them and see.

The Metkayinan saw movement in the corner of her eye and shot her head towards it, seeing the quick turn of a head. Creeping towards it the woman looked around the hard box, at first she saw an arrow, it was long and had yellow and green feathers sticking out the end. She could only assume it was from one of the Omaticaya people since the Metkayina only use spears. But upon closer inspection her blue eyes landed on blue skin, a darker shade than her own green with different markings and thinner limbs. Looking at the face she was caught off guard by bright golden eyes, slightly dimmed with lost life but marked out by the bioluminescence freckles that dotted the skin.

___ went to grab the arrow, she had to pull it out or it would cause more trouble for both of them but a growl made her pause her actions. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” the sky person sounded angry, her thin tail swishing and smacking on the hard wet ground below them, her forehead creased and teeth bared.

“Oe srung nga” the Metkayina woman blinked, her extra eyelid getting the excess water out from her eyes. She went from looking at the other woman’s face towards her hovered hand, then to the arrow piercing her side.

Zdinarsk groaned in annoyance, of course they wouldn’t be able to understand one another. But at this point she didn’t care, if she where to die here, on this ship with her comrades. She’d be happy to. Not to mention the woman next to her wasn’t half bad looking…

While the soldier was distracted ___ grabbed the hilt of the arrow and pulled. A gasp forced its way out of the forest Na’vi’s mouth and a choked scream refused to come out. Z-Dogs eyes widened, her hand immediately left her side to grasp the strangers wrist, clamping it in her grip and turning it slightly purple. “syeha si, just breathe, you’ll be ok” ___ reached into a little pouch on her side and brought out a few long pieces of seaweed, pressing it into the woman’s side and wrapping them around her torso. She held the hand that was connected to her wrist onto her chest and breathed deeply to instruct her.

Zdinarsk felt the slightly wet chest of the woman and in any other circumstances a smirk would’ve etched its way onto her face. Maybe she would’ve said a few sly comments too, but instead she listened to the slow beat of her companions heart and followed it. Breathing in deeply and slowly pushing the breath out. “Oeng zene hum” ___ pointed to the water and moved her hand slowly across the sea, telling the recom that they must go back to her home and away from this fight. The soldier got the point and nodded, she figured that the Na’vi woman wasn’t a threat to her, she would have killed her by now if she were right?

___ helped the recom up onto her feet with great effort and as soon as they both stood up she noticed a height difference between them. The sky person was a few inches taller, the tip of her head only reaching just below her shoulders. The Metkayinan heights usually differ from person to person, but a female would typically be smaller than a males, being tall isn’t something valued in the sea like in the forest. Both woman walked (or limped) closer to the edge of the ship and ___ did a series of clicking sounds from her mouth, calling out her tsurak. She helped Z-Dog get over the banister and into the water, luckily the boat was tilted far enough to do it without struggle. Then she dived in herself and linked with the creature, staying above the surface while they swim back to her home.

Zdinarsk can’t remember the last time she got to relax.

It’s been a few months since the fight broke out and her wound has fully healed, the flesh however was scarred and tender to the touch. But she has never felt more free, her clothes have been changed to those of the Na’vi and she has learnt the ways of a warrior, being a soldier it came easy to her. That and she had a great teacher.

___ has looked after her, cleaned her wounds, made her food, taught her the customs and the language. She also comforted the recom when she woke up from sleep, sobbing out for her comrades and experiencing that of extreme stress. War does that to people. The Metkayinan always rubbed her shoulders and sang comforting songs to ease her back into slumber before dozing off next to her, they were never too far from one another.

Currently Zdinarsk was feeling her hair, she kept the shaved sides but the mohawk grew out, it being put into little braids that would make it easier for her to have in the water. “Do you like it?” ___ softly whispered out, her tail flapping on the floor nervously, “if you would like beads i can add them, i know the forest people use them”.

“Oe tìyawn fi’u”

___ grinned and grabbed her companions hand, placing it onto her chest where her heart beat can be felt. It was pacing fast. Zdinarsk couldn’t help but tease her “I thought that a fast beating heart is bad for the water” she chuckled as her tail swung in glee, they knew of the feelings they held for one another, but it was unspoken and whenever approached words where shy. She wanted to change that.

“It is, but you are not water” ___ looked at her through lowered lids and Zdinarsk couldn’t help but take a breath. She was absolutely beautiful, eclipse was near and the sky’s where filled with pinks and oranges, it reflecting sweetly onto her teal skin and shining off her blue eyes. The recoms eyes drifted to her lips where they sat plush on her skin, they were soft and kissable, a cute shade of pink.

___ caught the other warrior staring and grinned, fangs slightly poking out “What is it you say? See something you like?” Z-Dog choked on her own spit. I guess ___ caught more onto English than Zdinarsk with Na’vi. The Metkayinan chuckled at her expression, the atmosphere went from playful to calm, blue eyes met yellow and it was like the world stopped.

Z-Dog cupped her face and leaned in, lips meeting each others in a sweet kiss. Both faces flushed in a scarlet, tips of the ears becoming darker. Zdinarsk would never have thought she’d be here, in the enemies home learning their ways and falling in love with one of them.

“The way of water connects all things” ___ broke apart from the kiss to exclaim, “from your birth and after your death” she whispered. “A part of you died on that ship, the human side. Now you are Metkayina. You are one of us now” she rested her cheek on Zdinarsk’s shoulder, looking towards the setting sun. The other warrior couldn’t help but agree, she found a new life, a new home, she knew that the sky people will be back, but unlike her old life, this time she’ll fight amongst her people. With her mate by her side.

Sanemi hasn't been focusing well lately, even in his classes. He's less harsh than he usually is, and even his closest friend, Obanai, notices this. But of course, knowing the chemistry teacher, he won't really pry that much.

Genya shifted in his seat, looking at his big brother with worried eyes. Usually, Sanemi would say things like...

"Why do you fucking care?!"

or

"Mind your own damn business, you goddamn brat!"

It's not like Genya likes being yelled at by his own brother, but Sanemi's been acting weird.

"I'm good Nii-chan. I hope you are too. Just remember that you're the sweetest brother in the world. And the greatest teacher too."

Sanemi blushed at what his little brother told him. He scoffed and rolled his eyes, gripping harder on the steering wheel. But honestly, inside, his heart was suddenly filled with warmth.

You were a wreck. The day after that incident with Sanemi, you couldn't find the guts to face him at school. You can't even talk to Kanae well after the jealousy that you just felt from her presence. The science teacher doesn't deserve it, as she was really nice towards you, but you just can't help it.

You're a history teacher, but damn, you don't know how to write your story well enough that it'll be good history in the future.

Sanemi had avoided you as well, and that made you feel worse. Whenever you're in the faculty room, he will walk out, even if he's in the middle of a conversation. Of course, you know that what he tells his other colleagues is just full of excuses.

You silently watched him, noticing how he became less aggressive with his students. But of course, sometimes you'll see him talking to Kanae, and you'll end up sulking once again on a corner with Tomioka, who has no idea why you're there with him at all.

But as if the fates were testing your patience, today you found yourself alone with him inside the faculty room.

The teachers decided to go out tonight, but of course, because you were sulking badly, you declined. Even if Tomioka wanted to decline too, Shinobu forced him to do so. So now you're alone at your desk, finishing checking the test papers on the table.

You heard the door slide but didn't look up, as perhaps it was just one of your students.

"If you're looking for other teachers, they're not around. Just come back tomorrow."

"Need a hand?"

You looked up, and standing behind you was Sanemi. With his sleeves rolled up and his arms crossed, you can't help but feel hot on the face. But yes, you longed to hear his voice. You fucking missed the scent of his minty perfume.

You missed Sanemi so much, and him talking to you right now fucking hurts so much.

But of course, you're at school, and this is work. You need to separate your personal life from your career, which you also messed up on doing the last few days.

You gave Sanemi a soft smile, trying your best not to pull him down and just hug him. "Oh, sure, Shinazugawa-san. My students are giving me a hard time!" Your voice sounded as professional as you had imagined, and it had made Sanemi scoff.

He pulled Giyu's chair over and sat next to you, snatching some of the test papers from your table. "Where's the answer sheet?" He asked, and you handed it to him.

Sanemi's fingers brushed against yours, and that immediately almost made you pass out. You were paralysed by the sensation that the little motion sent through your body. You watched as the man checked the papers silently, wishing he'd bring up something from that time, but nothing came.

"For a delinquent kid, Hashibira-kun did well." He muttered under his breath, praising your student which made you smile. "Yep, he's good at history. And Kamado-kun's a great tutor." You replied, smiling as you easily checked Tanjiro's papers. The kid had aced the test once again.

"Eh, I hope he does well in math, though. That kid gets fucked up with numbers!"

"Oi, mind your language." You said, chuckling, which also definitely made Sanemi smile.

You remembered the night when he confessed to you, as he said almost the same words when you cursed at him.

"Why are you still here, though? I thought the teachers would eat dinner together or something. Where's your best friend? Tomioka?" Sanemi asked as he continuously checked your students' papers. You gulped and paused for a bit.

"Oh, Kocho-sama took Tomioka-san. And as for me, I'm busy. I can't go." You lied through your teeth, wishing Sanemi would never notice. "How about you? I thought you went with them?" Kanae's there... You wanted to add but stopped yourself from doing so.

"Oh well, I'm not in the mood for those gatherings. Okay, I'm done here. Do you have more tests to check?"

"Oh, none. I think I can go home. Finally!"

You said, stretching out on your chair. You didn't notice, but a button on your blouse popped out, hitting Sanemi on the cheek. You gasped, immediately caressing his cheek to check if you had accidentally wounded him again. But thank goodness, there are none.

Sanemi undoubtedly blushed slightly as you caressed his face and let your fingers run up his scars. When you realised it, you pulled your hand away, apologising for what you just did.

You were expecting that Sanemi would pull your hand or anything, but that didn't happen. Disappointment filled you, but this is the reality. You turned him down, and that's the end of it.

A warm fabric suddenly blanketed you, making you look up. There, you saw that Sanemi took off his outer vest and placed it over your shoulders. "I don't wear any jackets, but perhaps this vest could cover you up." He said it sweetly, and that definitely tugged at your heartstrings.

"Thank you, Shinazugawa-san."

"You're welcome."

Silence. A deafening silence came right after you wore his vest, covering up your bra that was exposed earlier. His minty scent embraced you like a lover longing for his significant other, and there, you wished it was him instead of just his vest.

The math teacher didn't try to start up a conversation; instead, he played with Tomioka's pen that was left at his table.

You suddenly wondered why he was mad at your friend in the first place. So you asked.

"Why do you hate Tomioka-san so much?"

Your question caught Sanemi off guard, and he was undoubtedly staring at you with wide eyes as a result.

"Uh, sorry to pry—"

"I don't hate the man. But I consider him my rival. He's smart; I'll give him that. But I fucking hate his I am different from you vibes and shit. And the Kochos seemed to still like him despite that. You know that Kanae's my ex. I even became jealous of him before."

Kanae again... You looked away and sighed. "I see."

"But now it's different. It's more like he doesn't vibe with me as much as Obanai does. And he looks like a fucktard."

"Hey! Tomioka's handsome!"

You said it in defence of your best friend, which made Sanemi laugh. He shook his head and continued. "But yeah, that's it. I don't really care if he lives with the Kochos or anything. I have more priorities than thinking about them."

His words moved you. So, does this also mean that he isn't thinking about Kanae anymore? You wanted to ask once again, but you have no right to do so.

"And you're one of those priorities, Y/N."

Your world stopped as Sanemi's voice echoed in your senses. You shot him a shocked look, but he was already looking at you with sadness in his eyes. This sight was too different from his normal attitude, and it makes you feel bad. You want to comfort him.

"I can't forget about you, Y/N. I fucking tried."

"Sanemi stop."

You tried stopping him, but the man held your hand once again and gripped it tightly this time, assuring you that you wouldn't leave him again.

"Please let me start over, Y/N. Please let me prove myself to you. Please give me this last chance. And I swear that if this doesn't work this time, I'll stop for good. I'll fucking leave you alone even if that shit hurts."

This time, tears finally rolled down your cheeks as, for the second time, you saw the usual strong and cold Sanemi beg for you to give him another chance.

You hate how he looks right now. You hate seeing him sad. And with that, you let your impulse take over your body as you gave him a warm embrace and whispered in his ear.

So I've been in my happy, smiley Buddie feels all week and am throughly unwilling to let them go, so its insane theory time. And we're going to start with Maddie, Buck's beloved sister, who raised him, is (almost) the most important person in his life, and who unless I'm wrong has never spoken with a single one of his love interests, even Taylor who he lived with and spent decades on the show (it felt like that anyway). Not even Tommy and her spoke when they were at the same ceremony (maybe related but its a problem Eddie, his best friend, never has, though many of those have been on calls, but still he's directly interacted with them, not just been in the same room). Now with Maddie at dispatch and Buck usually sequestered in a separate narrative bubble when he's dating, this maybe isn't that hard to understand. But on the flip side, when it comes to the firefam, Maddie has directly interacted, not just been in the same place, with every one of them, except of course Eddie, Buck's bestie. Its something that people have been clamoring for for years, but for some reason just doesn't happen, to the point JLH even emphasized it in the group interview before the season started. So my theory is that this isn't coincidence or the stories not lining up right, I'm thinking its deliberate and meeting Maddie is more or less endgame in Buck's search for love. Like Maddie talking to Buck's LI and passing the torch sort of is the signal Buck is done, he's found the one. And well, she hasn't talked with Eddie yet, because him and Buck aren't there yet, they're still figuring themselves out and still have no clue they're in love. But when Eddie figures it out, that's when him and Maddie will finally share a scene. What do you think, too much for a random Tuesday??

Well, this is a day late since I spent most of yesterday driving back home, but I love this theory!

I would love some Eddie and Maddie interactions, and how great would it be if it's a moment where she clocks Eddie and his feelings and they have a moment and he knows that SHE knows, but is letting them get there on their own terms.

Buddie stuff aside though, we really do need more of Eddie interacting with literally everyone in the main cast. Hopefully, once he and Buck get together and stop getting shoved off into separate side plots with rando LIs, they can spend more of his time interacting with the main cast. Ryan is great and beloved by all, and I would just like to see more! More of him and Chim! (FOREVER bemoaning Chim not being allowed in the boils-curse arc 😫) More of him and Hen (and Karen and the kids)!! More of him and Maddie! More of him and Athena! More of him and Bobby!

Legitimately, Buddie not only makes the most sense for the characters, it also truly opens up avenues for more new and interesting stories for Buck and Eddie together as a unit, as well as separately with the rest of the mains!

OK, so, personal story time. Skip for TMI, or something. IDC.

When I was nineteen, I was living away from home for the first time in a dormitory and I had these roommates. I was a very stupid, naive, sexually inexperienced, frontal-cortex-still-entirely-udeveloped nineteen. I was studying architecture, the hours were ridiculous, the living conditions were atrocious (and I mean no hot water, communal toilets for the entire floor, no privacy whatsoever, perpetually drunk, eternally partying next-door neighbours bringing creepy men over, it was absolute hell with no recourse) and I was really, really struggling to keep afloat.

My self-esteem also wasn't the greatest and I'd spent my entire teens feeling unlovable and unattractive because, idk, I didn't look like Naomi Campbel, and was told from numerous sides that being some random average girl was just not enough. My mental health went down the drain that year and it never really recovered. I hadn't been doing particularly great even before that, but it was like that whole hellish mess snapped some final thread in me and it was just a downward spiral after downward spiral for years after that. It took an additional ten years to get diagnosed and put on meds because everyone is just so stupid and when you are young, you don't know how to advocate for yourself, or even that you should be doing so.

And then there were these roommates.

There were three of them, all older than me, and we lived in this tiny twelve-square-metre room with three single beds (two of them had to share because one of them was a friend who was there "illegally" because she had lost her right to accommodation for repeating the year and didn't want to go back to her parent's home for the time being and I was too stupid to put my foot down, report her and tell her to fuck off). The two legal ones were sisters.

And let me tell you, I was so in AWE of them! All three were tall, beautiful, put together and confident! They were incredibly popular and had men crawling all over them. I felt pathetic in comparison. I wasn't jealous, not exactly, I just felt inadequate and held the two sisters on this incredibly high pedestal because they seemed so smart and gorgeous (not so much the friend, because even though she was beautiful too, she had this self-absorbed, self-centred, flighty, shallow character that I just couldn't respect). The sisters, however, were everything I wished I could be, especially the younger one.

That particular sister, let's call her M, was also studying architecture. She was in year four (compared to my miserable first year) and she was doing so well, her work was amazing. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She was the epitome of elegance, intelligence and beauty in my eyes. She could do no wrong. Hero worship was in full swing, I couldn't imagine she could be any more perfect even if I tried.

And then a few months into our hellish living arrangement, I found out that she was fooling around with this worthless guy who was cheating on his long-term girlfriend with her. They had an on-again-off-again relationship. They had broken up before because he refused to leave the official girlfriend, but for whatever reason, she was in love with his mediocre ass and kept going back to him. I was shocked when the whole story came out. There she was, the most perfect girl I had ever known, letting this cheating loser string her along like that. It was gross.

Let me tell you, that pedestal I put her on came crumbling down so fast because even my infatuated, naive, sleep-deprived and chemically imbalanced brain knew this was very wrong (it took me several more years and another incident with a woman I was super close to and had adored for years to teach me not to mess with cheaters and the people they cheat with because they are always fundamentally deficient in some hidden (or not so hidden) ways and that whatever damage they have that lets them act in this way will eventually drag you down too, but I digress).

In my shock, I asked her, why? Of all people, why him? This girl was so gorgeous, she could have had any man on the planet. She said they were in love. And I asked her, if he loved her so much, why didn't he break up with his girlfriend (mind you, the girlfriend fully thought they were getting married sometime in the near future). It seemed so obvious to me, if he truly loved her, he should have ended his previous relationship and dated her openly.

AND SHE TOLD ME THIS EXACT SAME LINE. THIS COMPLETE BULLSHIT OF A MANIPULATIVE EXCUSE.

Apparently, the shitty cheater couldn't break up with the girlfriend because the girlfriend had sworn that if he broke up with her, she would never marry anyone else and stay single her whole entire life. And he, the poor baby, couldn't live with that, so he couldn't leave her 🤯🤯

I had never heard something more ridiculous in my life. It was so absurd, and it was so world-altering for me that this perfect girl, the girl I had thought was so put together and so incredibly smart, was TAKING THIS UTTER STUPIDITY SERIOUSLY. I still remember it so clearly, even after all these years. It didn't make sense then and it still doesn't make sense now. It's the XXI century!! Break up with the woman you don't love!! What the hell is this nonsense?? WHO THE FUCK CARES IF SHE DECIDES TO NEVER MARRY ANYONE ELSE? IT IS NO LONGER YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM!!

Also, all these people were in their early fucking twenties, the absolute delusion that any of her threats (if they were even real and not made up by the loser cheater because all cheaters ever do is lie) were in any way a real and enforceable thing that would come to pass. BUT EVEN IF SHE NEVER DID GET MARRIED? SO FUCKING WHAT? NOT YOUR CIRCUS, NOT YOUR MONKEYS.

And there she was, sneaking around with this garbage man because he gave her this nonsensical excuse. The stupidity is unending. I cannot. I could not and will never be able to can 🙄🙄

And back to the actual show now.

WHO THE FUCK CARES IF SHE NEVER MARRIES? WHAT KIND OF BULLSHIT BLACKMAIL IS THAT? FUCK ALL THE WAY OFF AND THEN KEEP FUCKING OFF SOME MORE UNTIL YOU DROP INTO A DEEP BLACK HOLE AND KEEP DROPPING UNTIL YOU REACH THE EARTH'S CORE AND DISINTEGRATE IN THE LAVA.
