something that i've found really surprising about the death note fandom is how much discussion there is surrounding characters' religious affiliations & the religious imagery throughout the text, but how little the shinigami seem to be brought up in those conversations. in 20 years of fandom i would imagine that's something that's come up before, and maybe there have been recent discussions that i've just happened to miss, but it's not something i've personally come across in posts around the topic of religion in death note and it seems like a pretty significant thing to leave out
#i recognise that this post maybe comes across as bitchy and that is very sincerely not my intention#i'm honestly just surprised that it isn't talked about more#like i think there's a lot of additional nuance surrounding mello's religious affiliation in particular#when you consider how casually he reacted to meeting sidoh & how quick he was to pivot from fascination to scaring him into submission#if mello really WAS extremely christian. as is the general consensus afaik. you have to wonder what his thoughts would've been#about the existence of gods of death in general and the lack of an afterlife if sidoh ever told him that
