mm...i think i know what you're getting at, but hostile reports about anne's character existed way before hviii went to the concerted effort of degrading her legacy.
#that's not to say those didn't have their own motivations and biases...but#it cannot all be attributed to him#i think the counterfactuals about this period that exist are all the more interesting for thinking about how different the historiography#would be had events shaped differently#what if anne boleyn had a son; but he was papist as hell?#what would her legacy be then? etc#as some have argued (weir)... variously...#we would not remember anne had she not died how she did ; A#had she had a more 'triumphant' ending we would have gotten a more 'honest' rendering of her flaws#B...#and C; as norton has argued#maybe the historiography of AB in the case of her being regent for a future son#would be 'mellower'? as perhaps this also would've '#'mellowed' her out#and i don't necessarily believe or agree with any of this#(or maybe i do...guess)#im just speaking recreationally
