Shifters, also sometimes called the weretouched, were a race of humanoids descended from interbreeding between lycanthropes and humans. Fierce and wild-spirited, shifters were feared by many as much as their shapeshifting brethren.
Shifters resembled humans, their close brethren, but with distinctively bestial features such as sharp teeth, claws, pointed ears, or fur. Compared to humans, shifters were somewhat short, the average height range being 5.6–6.0 feet (1.7–1.8 meters), though shifters were lithe and strong and, as a result, were slightly heavier for their size, weighing 130–180 pounds (59.0–81.6 kilograms) most commonly. In many other ways, however, shifters looked like humans.
However, to a human's eye, the resemblance was less obvious than the differences. Unlike humans, shifters had flat, animal-like noses, larger than usual eyes that allowed them to see better in low light, heavy eyebrows, pointed ears, skin that was often of a brownish shade, and much more hair, also commonly brown, than was typical for the common human. Because of this, shifters, to a human, more closely resembled their lycanthrope ancestors, which was sometimes confusing and shifters were sometimes mistaken for true lycanthropes, but a shifter could avoid this by shifting minor parts of their body to look like a normal human. Like their more feral brethren, shifters were capable of minor shapeshifting and could manifest animal-like traits when under stress, such as a tail, fangs, claws, wings, gills, and more. They adapted to whatever environment they were in.
Shifters lived about as long humans did on average.
Shifters were commonly self-reliant and free-spirited. However, they were restrained in their actions by a fear that they might become lost in the savagery that dwelled in their blood. This fear of losing control made many shifters confrontational and reclusive. Some shifters overcame this self-doubt, however, becoming true friends to those they fought beside. However, this feral predatory nature could be to the shifter's advantage, and they made excellent rangers or druids.
Shifters were often feared wherever they went, much like their lycanthrope ancestors. This was due to a common misconception that all lycanthropes were invariably and irreversibly evil, including shifters. Though false, this conception shaped the lives of shifters, who rarely achieved a prominent status in civilized society. Instead, shifters preferred either a nomadic lifestyle or living close to the edges of society, supporting it as fishers, trackers, hunters, guides, or scouts. Others took up the call of an adventurer's life while yet others gave in to the expectations of society, letting their primal bloodlust fuel them in a life of crime.
Shifters favored gods of nature, the moon, and primal strength.
Just like lycanthropes, shifters could be found scattered throughout Faerûn in the late 15th century DR, but a few gathered in larger communities. The Werewoods near Baldur's Gate and the Glimmerwood in Luruar were two such locations where lycanthropes were found in larger numbers and hence, as a result, so were shifters. However, most shifters, even in these regions, stayed away from the dark influence of their ancestors. Other large shifter communities were found in the Great Dale and the Forest of Lethyr, as well as Dambrath, where the local culture was xenophobic and had a hatred for drow.

Shifter Ranking and Features (5e)
Guide
1=do not play this class as this race
2=can play but not recommended
3=decent choice
4=perfect
Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
Shifters are sometimes called weretouched, as they are descendants of people who contracted full or partial lycanthropy. Humanoids with a bestial aspect, shifters can’t fully change shape, but they can temporarily enhance their animalistic features by entering a state they call shifting.
Shifters are similar to humans in height and build but are typically more lithe and flexible. Their facial features have a bestial cast, often with large eyes and pointed ears; most shifters also have prominent canine teeth. They grow fur-like hair on nearly every part of their bodies. While a shifter’s appearance might remind an onlooker of an animal, they remain clearly identifiable as shifters even when at their most feral. Most shifters resemble a particular kind of lycanthrope.
Ability Score Increase. When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. You can't raise any of your scores above 20.
Creature Type. You are a Humanoid.
Size. You are Medium.
Speed. Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Bestial Instincts. Channeling the beast within, you have proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: Acrobatics, Athletics, Intimidation, or Survival.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
Shifting. As a bonus action, you can assume a more bestial appearance. This transformation lasts for 1 minute, until you die, or until you revert to your normal appearance as a bonus action. When you shift, you gain temporary hit points equal to 2 x your proficiency bonus. You can shift a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Whenever you shift, you gain an additional benefit based on one of the following options (choose when you select this race):
Beasthide. You gain 1d6 additional temporary hit points. While shifted, you have a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.
Longtooth. When you shift and as a bonus action on your other turns while shifted, you can use your elongated fangs to make an unarmed strike. If you hit with your fangs, you can deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Swiftstride. While shifted, your walking speed increases by 10 feet. Additionally, you can move up to 10 feet as a reaction when a creature ends its turn within 5 feet of you. This reactive movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.
Wildhunt. While shifted, you have advantage on Wisdom checks, and no creature within 30 feet of you can make an attack roll with advantage against you unless you’re incapacitated.
Languages. Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.
Eberron- Rising from the Last War
Shifters are sometimes called the weretouched, as many believe that they are the descendants of humans and lycanthropes. They are humanoids with a bestial aspect; while they cannot fully change shape they can temporarily enhance their animalistic features – a state they call shifting. Whatever their origins, shifters have evolved into a unique race. A shifter walks on the knife’s edge between the wilds and the world around them. Do they embrace their primal instincts or the path of civilization?
Beasthide often signifies the bear or boar: stoic, stubborn and thick-skinned.
Longtooth shifters typically have lupine traits and prefer to run with a pack.
Swiftstride are often predatory and feline, but a swiftstride could also be a cunning rat who darts through the shadows.
Wildhunt shifters are born from any creature that tracks its prey.
Age. Shifters are quick to mature both physically and emotionally, reaching young adulthood at age 10. They rarely live to be more than 70 years old.
Alignment. Shifters tend toward neutrality, being more focused on survival than concepts of good and evil. A love of personal freedom can drive shifters toward chaotic alignments.
Size. Shifters range from 5 to almost 7 feet tall, depending on their subrace. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Shifting. As a bonus action, you can assume a more bestial appearance. This transformation lasts for 1 minute, until you die, or until you revert to your normal appearance as a bonus action. When you shift, you gain temporary hit points equal to your level + your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 temporary hit point). You also gain benefits that depend on your shifter subrace, described below. Once you shift, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Languages. You can read and write Common.
Subrace. The beast within shapes each shifter physically and mentally. The four major subraces of shifter include beasthide, longtooth, switftstride, and wildhunt. Choose a subrace for your shifter.
Beasthide
Stoic and solid, a beasthide shifter draws strength and stability from the beast within. Beasthide shifters are typically tied to the bear or the boar, but any creature known for its toughness could apply.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 1.
Natural Athlete. You have proficiency in the Athletics skill.
Shifting Feature. Whenever you shift, you gain 1d6 additional temporary hit points, and while shifted, you have a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.
Longtooth
Longtooth shifters are fierce and aggressive, but they form deep bonds with their friends. Many longtooth shifters have canine traits that become more pronounced as they shift, but they might instead draw on tigers, hyenas, or other predators.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Fierce. You have proficiency in the Intimidation skill.
Shifting Feature. While shifted, you can use your elongated fangs to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action. If you hit with your fangs, you can deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Swiftstride
Swiftstride shifters are graceful and quick. Typically feline in nature, swiftstride shifters are often aloof and difficult to pin down physically or socially.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increase by 1.
Graceful. You have proficiency in the Acrobatics skill.
Shifting Feature. While shifted, your walking speed increases by 10 feet. Additionally, you can move up to 10 feet as a reaction when an enemy ends its turn within 5 feet of you. This reactive movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.
Wildhunt
Wildhunt shifters are sharp and insightful. Some are constantly alert, ever wary for possible threats. Others focus on their intuition, searching within. Wildhunt shifters are excellent hunters, and they also tend to become the spiritual leaders of shifter communities.
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 2.
Natural Tracker. You have proficiency in the Survival skill.
Mark the Scent. As a bonus action, you can mark one creature you can see within 10 feet of you. Until the end of your next long rest, your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make to find the marked creature, and you always know the location of that creature if it is within 60 feet of you. You can’t use this trait again until you finish a short or long rest.
Shifting Feature. While shifted, you have advantage on Wisdom checks.
Eberron Shifter
Artificer 1 no intelligence increase
Barbarian 3 Beasthide and Longtooth both make excellent barbarians. Beasthide will be more durable while Longtooth will be more effective offensively. Just keep in mind that Shifting and Rage both take a Bonus Action to activate so your Bonus Action will be in high demand
Bard 2 Swiftstride offers a Charisma bonus but that’s the best that you can get from any of Shifter’s subraces. None of the Shifting options are particularly helpful for Bard
Cleric 2 Wildhunt is the only subrace which offers a Wisdom bonus but little else works well for Cleric. Other subraces like Beasthide and Longtooth could work for martial Cleric builds but they’re still not a great fit
Druid 2 Wildhunt is workable and the additional durability of the Dexterity increase and the temporary hit points can be very helpful since Druids tend to be frail and have poor AC. Unfortunately Shifting likely doesn’t work while using Wild Shape since it’s a physical transformation inherent to your physical body
Fighter 4 Beasthide and Longtooth make excellent fighters. Beasthide will be more durable while Longtooth will be more effective offensively. Longtooth offers a great way to use Fighter’s typically under-utilized Bonus Action which offers a great way to boost your damage output
Monk 3 Wildhunt’s ability score increases work great and the Shifting option is useful defensively but since Shifting is only helpful defensively the vast majority of the time your racial traits are reduced to ability score increases and Darkvision
Paladin 4 Beasthide Longtooth and Swiftstride all work for Paladin. Beasthide and Longtooth work for the same reason that they work for Fighter while Swiftstride works for a Dexterity-based highly mobile build
Ranger 3 Wildhunt was basically tailor-made for Ranger and if the Shifting option was better it would be a great option. Unfortunately it’s only useful defensively in certain situations so it’s hard to capitalize on Shifting
Rogue 4 Swiftstride makes a great high-Charisma build and the Shifting benefit allows you to quickly move away from enemies if you’re fighting at range or if you just prefer to keep some distance between you. Wildhunt works well for a highly-perceptive build like Inquisitive but it also works well thematically with Scout
Sorcerer 2 Swiftstride offers a Charisma bonus and the Shifting benefit can keep you from being bogged down in melee
Warlock 2 same as Sorcerer
Wizard 1 same as Artificer
Mordenkainen Shifter
Artificer 4 Beasthide works great for front-line Artificers who want to stand still and draw attacks. Swiftstride is great for hit-and-run builds built around Booming Blade allowing you to move out of melee during enemies turns so that you can move back into melee on your turn to cast Booming Blade before using Boots of the Winding Path to teleport back out of reach although the extra skill proficiency isn't helpful
Barbarian 4 Beasthide and Longtooth both make excellent Barbarians. Beasthide will be more durable while Longtooth will be more effective offensively. Just keep in mind that Shifting and Rage both take a Bonus Action to activate so your Bonus Action will be in high demand. Longtooth’s additional attack also takes a Bonus Action so it’s only worthwhile on subclasses that don’t already use your Bonus Action every turn. Barbarian is perhaps the only class on which I would consider Wildhunt. Wildhunt allows you to negate the Advantage on attacks against you from Reckless Attack. Reducing the likelihood that you’ll be hit will dramatically improve your durability possibly even more so than Beasthide
Bard 3 Beasthide’s durability and Swiftstride’s ability to get out of melee are both helpful defensive options for Bard but they’re primarily useful in melee which is a place that Bards shouldn’t be willingly. Beasthide looks tempting for College of Swords and/or College of Valor but it won’t make your weapon attacks meaningful so you can wander into melee for a while but plan to rely on spells offensively. Select Intimidation as your racial skill proficiency. An extra Face skill from your race makes other sources of skills more flexible
Cleric 3 Beasthide is a great option if you’re built to walk around in melee. The extra AC and temporary hit points will keep you from dipping into your spells slots to compensate for your d8 hit dice. Longtooth’s extra attack qualifies to trigger Divine Strike which makes it a tempting option for melee builds because it allows you a second attack significantly improving the likelihood that you’ll hit and deal the bonus damage from Divine Strike. But even with that added insurance you’ll still do more damage by casting a cantrip. Survival is likely your best skill choice despite Survival’s limited usefulness. Survival is likely your best skill choice despite Survival’s limited usefulness
Druid 3 Beasthide’s additional durability is welcome on Druids who typically have worse AC than comparable clerics. This is especially appealing on Circles of Spores but their action economy is also very strenuous so it may be difficult to fit Shifting into a turn. Since Shifting is a physical transformation based on your character’s physical body I don’t think Shifting works while using Wild Shape. You may be able to combine Shifting with Circle of the Moon but spending 2 Bonus Actions on back-to-back turns can be difficult and it’s not so good that you want to spend your Action to Wild Shape just so that you can get both effects going in 1 turn. Survival is likely your best skill choice despite Survival’s limited usefulness
Fighter 4 same as Barbarian
Monk 3 Beasthide’s additional durability is great for Monk but Monk’s Bonus Action is monopolized by Martial Arts and Flurry of Blows so the action economy can be frustrating. Even so giving up an attack or two is worth the cost. Acrobatics is the only skill likely to provide any benefit for Monk
Paladin 4 Beasthide Longtooth and Swiftstride all work for Paladin. Beasthide and Longtooth work for the same reason that they work for Fighter
Ranger 3 Rangers already lean very heavily on their Bonus Action but if you can manage the action economy Shifting is helpful. Beasthide is great for melee builds. Longtooth is helpful for some Strength-based melee builds offering you as many attacks as a two-weapon fighting build while still allowing you to use a shield. Swiftstride is tempting for Archery builds but if you’re worried about getting stuck in melee you can cast Zephyr Strike. I recommend Acrobatics or Survival as your racial skill proficiency depending on your role in the party
Rogue 2 Beasthide’s durability is nice but not especially important. Longtooth isn’t appealing because the bite is Strength-based and Cunning Action makes Longtooth obsolete
Sorcerer 3 Beasthide’s durability is nice but not amazing. Swiftstride looks nice to get out of melee but it won’t get you out of grapples so you probably still want Misty Step and then why bother with Swiftstride?
Warlock 3 same as Sorcerer but Longtooth’s bite attack won’t work with Hexblade’s ability to attack with Charisma so there’s no fun interaction there
Wizard 2

Here's my set for this game, featuring my girl Pod - apologies for the poor aspect ratio.
Pod was a character I made to play the Pathfinder 1st Edition module Ire of the Storm. She is a half-Drow Weretouched Shifter/White-haired Witch multiclass with animate hair, terrible hygiene, and a monstrous were-spider form I haven't had the courage to draw yet ' 3'
All these palette swaps reference characters who are thematically tied to Pod in some way, namely:
Is a spider or has spider-adjacent powers
Has prehensile hair
Behaves in a "wild" manner in some capacity.
The 0th slot, the one with the green background, is Pod's default colors - don't try and answer for that one! All the others have been given a Star Rating based on my perception of how obscure the referenced character is. Good luck with #15!

Weretouched (Shifter Archetype)

One of the most iconic figures that comes up when thinking of shapeshifting is the various types of lycanthropes, cursed to turn into fearsome predatory beasts in response to the full moon.
However, typically being a natural or afflicted lycanthrope has its own sort of baggage, either being incapable of controlling their actions, or suffering from obligatory alignment changes if your GM focuses on rule text over flavor.
What if someone were to find a way to master the curse? Certainly, we’ve seen other archetypes do this, such as mooncursed barbarians.
Perhaps those who have truly mastered the curse are those that have combined it with another shapeshifting skillset. Such shifters are known as weretouched, and master a singular form tied to one of the variants of therianthropy.
Whether they are natural lycanthropes that devoted themselves to mastering the beast within, or the afflicted that achieved a miracle of self-discipline, this archetype represents those who have mastered the beast, rather than being its victim.
As suggested above, these shifters only ever gain one animal aspect, tied to the version of the curse that they carry. Almost every version of lycanthropy (and entothropy, if you want to go that route) that is found in official pathfinder materials has an aspect that is associated with it, with the exception of weresharks, but that can be achieved with some homebrewing. In place of gaining new aspects, however, these warriors instead gain the infamous resilience associated with the curse, which can be pierced only by silver or sufficient magic, and they are immune to truly contracting lycanthropy (or entothropy) in it’s virulent, uncontrolled form.
Their limitation also extends to what animals they share a kinship with, being only the animals of that general type.
Additionally, when using their power to fully transform, they can choose to instead take on a hybrid form like a true lycanthrope, gaining strength and attacking power while retaining hands.
If you’re only interested in one shifter aspect and/or you want to play up a were-beast connection with some extra durability, this archetype may be for you. You could choose a more combat-focused form and be able to choose when you want to go fully beast or just hybrid for the advantages of each, or you could choose a form of lycanthropy that is maybe not so good at combat and have the option for a more combat-ready hybrid form, such as the mouse aspect and falcon aspects for wererat and wereraptors respectively. Regardless, you have plenty of options for builds with this archetype. It’s worth noting that nothing in the rules text technically demands that you pick an aspect that has a canon curse of lycanthropy to it, but given the flavor I’d imagine that GM fiat is required to step outside of that particular box.
Shifters already are sometimes mistaken for lycanthropes due to the nature of their powers, but even those familiar with the discipline may hesitate when they learn that a shifter is a weretouched. This is especially relevant if your setting has specific lore for how the curse came about. If it is tied to nature, others may view your power as dubious and risking a loss of control. However, if lycanthropy is an evil thing, a curse empowering or punishing the wicked, then it may be even more reviled.
Hivehome, a city built into the colossal fallen log of the felled World Tree, is a place famous for its crawling things, including several entothropes and weretouched, that guard it’s city walls with giant bombardier beetles trained as living siege weapons.
Plying boats through the reeds, the lizardfolk that live in the delta recognize the live-giving properties of the river, but also it’s dangers, including those of their kind, as well as humans, that can take on the form of mighty saltwater crocodiles, their reputation making exploitation a deadly prospect.
Though the moon does not hold sway over her like it once did, Lady Mara does enjoy sneaking out on nights of the full moon and embracing her lycanthropic form, that of a fearsome weretiger, not to hunt, but to bask in the beauty of the moonlit wilds.

So, the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Eberron has a race called Shifters, who are basically "Weretouched." They're a race of humanoids with a touch of lycanthropy in them. Although they cannot fully transform into animals, they can temporarily enhance themselves with animalistic features, an ability called Shifting. Now, naturally this could make them into a good furry baseline race for D&D players, were it not for the fact the default artwork makes them look more like Marvel's Sabertooth. So nuts to that, I've decided that in MY Eberron, Shifters look more like Thundercats, in that they're humanoids with bodyfur, big animalistic ears, and "Dogface" noses. And some have horns, if they're of the (sadly forgotten in 5e) Gorebrute subetype. Which, frankly, already makes them 20% Cooler in my book.

A little sketch of my next D&D character. Still need to decide a name for this Shifter (also called weretouched). I think he's either going to be a ranger or a druid. Depends on how much he's going to be inclined towards nature.

I have a campaign where the players and npcs are basically isekai'd from other games/pieces of media/real life into the realm
one of my players is running one of the dinobots as a warforged, and I've given them Shifter/Weretouched for this express reason. It works... shockingly well.
If a robot was cursed with lycanthropy they'd become a transformer.

Slow, but still going
I'm merging together the first two days of Inktober, because I didn't manage to finish yesterday's in time. It's a full page in my sketchbook, and I've only just started inking. It's probably the most character-heavy art peice I've ever done, but I'm really excited to be doing it!

I’m finishing off the first concept of my Dungeon Meshi OC art wise, so while I can’t work on it I’ll talk about them!!
their a half-elf shifter/weretouched (descendant of someone with lycanthropy) who has wolf-like features! Though I have gone for a humanoid base I do want to experiment with more inhuman examples of them..
they have a ‘rage’ form that is similar to a werewolf, however it isn’t used much in their work as a cleric!
They’ve been in many traveling parties, because they don’t trust them bc of their species/ they think that they’ve got lycanthropy and are lying. The team they’ve been in the longest disbanded so people could go visit their hometowns for a bit, leaving them alone in the dungeon town.
that’s what I’ve got so far, If I’ve got any DnD stuff wrong pls correct me :)

Wade rushes out and waves a piece of raw chicken at @weretouched to get her attention.
“Oi, Merida!"
It seems to be working, but not in the way he'd hoped. She looks more interested in him than the chicken.
"You can't just go around tearing up my neighborhood." He unsheathes his katanas. "See, the landlord is gonna blame me for this, and this housing market is already so rough..."

[image description: an uncolored digital sketch of four people, arranged into a grid. They have character name labels. The top right is a dark-haired tiefling woman with fangs and horns named “Kei.” Top left is an elf man with a Sharingan eye and a flower in the other socket, named Obito. Bottom-right is an aasimar woman with middle-toned hair and three geometric facial tattoos, labeled “Rin.” The bottom-left is a white-haired shifter man whose face is almost entirely covered by a wrap and whose Sharingan peeks out over the top, labeled “Kakashi.” end description]
Even if I didn’t say I’d draw Team Minato in their final D&D forms at some point, I figured it’s been a couple of years since I did the group image and I could probably come up with some art. Three days later, here it is.
Details (and extra art) below the cut.
Kei is a tiefling, whose color scheme is almost entirely taken from that of Isobu. Her fangs poke out of her mouth even when it’s closed, because “someone” decided what she wouldn’t get in horns would be made up for in teeth.
Obito is an eladrin, a Feywild-touched elf whose body changes sharply to fit a seasonable theme. Mostly means he changes color with his mood about every other day. His Kamui’s link with Kakashi has been on the fritz since his arrival.
Rin is an aasimar, who is described in-story as having picked up purple eyes and a purple tone to her hair that did not previously exist. It doesn’t quite match her tattoos or her White Strength Seal. She’s honestly having the easiest time adapting.
Kakashi is currently a giant wolf monster that shoots lightning in it must be a thursday, but they’ll get him a humanoid form back eventually. When he’s finally human-shaped again, they’ll find that his base form is “shifter,” or weretouched.
Also, a version that takes their heights into account:

#it must be a thursday#naruto#critical role#catch your breath fanfic#crossover#team minato#alternate team minato#kakashi hatake#obito uchiha#rin nohara#keisuke gekko#art by author#concept art#Dungeons and Dragons
