The first time Bdubs finds Etho curled up asleep in the snow, he thought he was dead.its a very understandable conclusion to jump to but the panic Bdubs felt was expressed in jostling the hell out of Etho who was actually just taking a nice nap. Waking in such a way made him panic too so they were both just screaming crying inconsolable for way the hell too long.

Bdubs took him inside, insisting he get warm. Etho was already warm, his fingers weren't even chilled, but he listens to Bdubs anyway.

Arctic foxes can maintain homeostasis in much colder temperatures, Etho explains, he wasn't cold at all and the snow makes a nice bed.

Bdubs still worries briefly whenever he stumbles across Etho all cozy in the snow, and even if he doesn't need it Bdubs makes them both hot coco with a warm blanket anyway. Etho will never complain about getting to be all cozy twice in one day.

The main problem to emerge from this whole conversation is that now Bdubs will try and lie in the snow with Etho too. This, for the understandable reason of 'Bdubs has no arctic fox blood', does not work. Bdubs refuses to accept this and does it anyway.

That, or he likes it when Etho carries him inside. It could be either.

minho falls in love with you in the spring, over blooming cherry blossoms and vibrant daffodils that greet you on your weekly sunset walk. over the feeling of your fingers intertwined with his own without soft fluffy gloves getting in the way, now that it's finally warm enough to retire that extra layer of protection for the season. over the sun coming out of hibernation and filling your days with golden light, falling upon your face and casting you in a magical hue. over the remnants of winter that still leave behind a palpable chill in the air early in the morning or late in the night, that has you reaching out for the comfort of his warmth. over your delighted smile when he brings home a bouquet of tulips after a long day at work. over your glassy eyes, reddened nose and flushed cheeks as he takes care of you when the seasonal allergies kick in.

minho falls in love with you in the summer, over picnics in the park where you both lay on blue gingham picnic blankets, your head on his chest, as you watch the clouds overhead drift peacefully. over watermelon gelatos passed between teasing lips, the confectionary melting too quickly for your liking under the blazing sunlight. over spontaneous drives to the beach even though neither of you can swim, but you go just for fun, just to build sand sculptures in the shape of your cat babies and stand on the edge of the water to splash at each other. over long naps on the couch on days where you're too lazy to venture into the outside heat, preferring to stay cuddled up together under the air conditioner with niki playing in the background.

minho falls in love with you in fall, over shared slices of pumpkin pie as you watch the leaves turn yellow and red right outside your window. over the adorable way you hide your face behind your hands on nights where he puts on a horror movie because he insists on honoring the halloween spirit. over your off-key rendition of taylor swift's all too well (the 10-minute version) for most of the season because you adamantly claim that it's autumn's official anthem. over weekends spent attached at the hip, baking sugar cookies for hours on end. over your crestfallen pout as you take note of how the days keep getting shorter and shorter, already missing warm sunny weeks with all your heart.

minho falls in love with you in winter, over matching scarves and beanies, even though he often has to carry them for you because you have a bad habit of forgetting them before you go out. over the first snow of the season because they say that if you witness the first snowfall with the person you love, then you will stay together for a long, long time. over sweet cuddles in bed as a bad christmas movie plays on tv, and you fall asleep on his shoulder about half an hour into the movie despite being the one to select the movie in the first place. over your return from a shopping spree with your girlfriends with nothing for yourself but everything for soondoongdori, from christmas themed clothes to treats and toys.

but then again, maybe it's not entirely accurate to say that minho falls in love you merely four times a year. if he wants to be precise, then he would say that he falls for you anew every morning he wakes up and sees you asleep in his arms like a delicate miracle granted by a star he once used to wish upon. if he wants to get technical, then he falls in love with you with every smile that you send his way, which is a terribly sappy thing for him to admit but it doesn't make the statement any less true.

minho loves you every day of every week, of every month, of every year. he's loved you before he even met you, when you were just a romanticized idea in his head and hadn't yet walked into his life like the angel he was always meant to find. he loves you every minute of every hour; there isn't a second where you're not on his mind, not a single beat of his heart that doesn't spell out your name. he loves you throughout the seasons and a million times in between.

First Week Day 6: First Snow

Winter Themes at The Lotus Flame: A Harbor Herald Exclusive!

Good evening to all of you, lovely readers! Your faithful reporter here taking a break from her usual Captain’s duties aboard the Nixie to enjoy one of the many Starlight concerts the entertainers of the realm have to offer. This evening, I had the pleasure of attending my first (but their second) Lotus Flame Annual Starlight Concert! Tucked away in the Lavender Beds, the stage was lavishly decorated with all the finest glitter and gold one might expect around this time of year. Though yours truly arrived a bit late, she still managed to snag a seat right up near the action; a bonny thing, too, as the musical talent on display was quite impressive!

Vit’oro Tyanu and  Seraphina Cantatrix played a few starlight classics on harp and flute, bringing some much-needed peace to this hectic time of year. These classics were followed by a very haunting, familiar tune as a harp duet; it brought more than one tear to my eye, I must confess. Astrid Adonalsium joined the duo to play about a little drummer lad and how all this trio seems to want for Starlight is...this audience! They closed out their set with a fearsome tribute to a one-winged primal of some sort, though your dear reporter confesses, Herald readers, that she has only heard of said primal in legends.

The next performer was one Clayde Lockheart, who started off with a flowing, expertly-fingered harp rendition of a song inquiring where, indeed, is Starlight. The answer seems to be in this concert hall, right now, by the reactions from the crowd! This song was a promise of skill that continued to deliver for the rest of Clayde’s set; the music of their harp was easy on the ear and well-played. There was one interesting comment by the performer reminding the men in the crowd from refraining from slipping anything into the women’s drinks, which...this reporter will take in the spirit it was intended instead of launching a full-scale investigation into this performer’s personal life.

Lada Gala followed Clayde’s closing number, and cut quite the figure on stage, garbed in whites and silvers with brilliant wing stage effects. Featuring her skill on the harp, she began with a lyrical rendition of Greensleeves, which just so happens to be one of this reporter’s very favorites. The few numbers that followed can only be described in the purple prose yours truly tends to favor from time to time; a journey through the gentle quiet of new-fallen snow in a distant forest, the smell of woodsmoke rising over the scent of ice and pine, as one returns to a home they didn’t realize they missed until hearing the silver notes fall from the harp upon the wind. Snapped back to the show from her music-and-booze soaked reverie, this reporter indulged in a bit of dancing to one of Lady Gala’s originals, “Starlight Romance”, widely available as an orchestrion roll! The Lady closed down her set with a somber reminder of the cold loneliness many feel during this season.

Taking the stage to drive those cold winter blues away entirely, the final act of the evening was none other than Savo Kesslivang, playing her, shall we say, colorful Starlight lineup. Anyone who has been reading this paper for any amount of time is aware that this reporter is a devoted fan of the Noise from the North Shroud, so I shall spare you my usual glowing review and say only that I enjoyed myself as I always do when Savo performs.

In closing, I highly recommend the talented performers, gorgeously-appointed and thoughtfully-stocked venue, and overall atmosphere of The Lotus Flame. If one is so inclined, one may visit their nightclub every Saturday night.

Here’s what I’ve been working on! Though I’ll be working on a much better cover soon, more than likely going to be snow themed. (Feedback on either the cover or the blurb is more than appreciated by the way!)

Here’s the blurb:

Game Night

Part. 1 ?

✰ Natsu & Lucy Fic

Lucy sat in her bathtub allowing her muscles to relax in the steaming water, the strong scent of vanilla and sugar wafting in the humid air. She sits with her head back and blonde hair swirling like ink in the water around her. The heat of the room causing her to almost forget the stress that she has been under lately.

Her parent’s anniversary is just around the corner and she hasn’t found the courage to tell her friends she isn’t going to be in Magnolia for at least a week. She promised herself she would spend this time with her parents this year. She hadn’t seen them in a long while and her heart always aches for them when this time comes around. Anna had offered to go with her to their graves, but Lucy declined. She didn’t want to bother Anna and take her from her own friends back at Blue Pegasus. Seeing her parents was something she wanted to do alone.

After all, these were her parents. Lucy knows her friends would go for support but the hole in her heart can only be filled by being as close as she can to her parents.

Lucy sighs heavily and sinks deeper into the soothing hot water to where the steaming water is over her ears and she can hear herself breathing. Each thump of her heart echoes in her ears and the outside world is silent.

Suddenly, her bathroom door swings open to reveal Natsu.

“Kyaaaa! Get outta here!” Lucy screams her cheeks fuming red as she covers her bare body under the water. Natsu remains unphased and doesn’t even bother looking away from Lucy’s naked body.

“I called you from your living room and you didn’t answer,” Natsu defends himself.

“That doesn’t mean you come barging in!” Lucy shouts throwing a bar of soap at him, “Get out and I’ll be there in a minute!”

“Alright, geez calm down,” Natsu surrenders and steps out of the bathroom shouting to Happy that he found Lucy.

Lucy grabs a towel and wraps it around herself before opening the door again. Natsu has already made himself comfortable on her bed and Happy is munching on a fish at her low table.

“What did you two need?” Lucy asks walking over to her underwear drawer and starts pawing through the contents, all of them seeming to be too revealing to wear around Natsu all of a sudden.

“We were bored,” Natsu shrugs watching Lucy’s movements as she settles on her set of satin pink pajamas and laced white panties. Natsu adjusts the way he’s sitting as she moves into the bathroom to change. She doesn’t even bother closing the door.

They’ve seen me enough, Lucy thinks.

“What makes you think I’d entertain you two,” Lucy comments as she walks back out combing her long blonde hair. Natsu stares at her pajamas that are much shorter and tighter than Natsu remembers.

He tilts his head to the side, “Is something bothering you Luce?” He asks her wondering why she’s more crabbier than usual.

Lucy stops combing her hair and looks at Natsu, “I’m fine. I’m just tired is all,” she answers the thought of her leaving soon lingering in the back of her mind.

She doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal but she doesn’t want to bring up parents to Natsu and Happy. Natsu would be thinking of Igneel and she doesn’t want him to be sad. Seeing Natsu cry for Igneel like he did broke her heart because she felt powerless. Her best friend was hurting and she couldn’t fix it.

“You sure Lucy?” Happy asks concerned no longer chewing on his fish.

“Lets play a card game,” Lucy suggests changing the subject and grabs a deck of cards and the bottles of saki Cana had gotten Lucy after Cana got back from a mission.

Lucy motions Natsu to join her and Happy at the table as she settles on the floor. Natsu decides to ask questions later and opts to sit across from Lucy.

Lucy starts shuffling the way Cana taught her and Natsu watches in a trance.

“Whoa where’d you learn to shuffle like that?!” Natsu exclaims in amazement as Lucy does a bridge shuffle.

“I play cards with Cana a lot,” Lucy answers blushing as she passes the cards out.

“What kind of cards are these?” Natsu asks looking at the cards that have numbers and different colors. Some have arrows and what looks like a do not enter sign.

“She called it Uno,” Lucy begins and downs her first bottle of saki before launching into the explanation of the game.

“So this game was made to ruin friendships,” Natsu summarizes when Lucy finishes.

Lucy laughs almost too loud thanks to the alcohol Cana gave her, “It’ll be fun!”

“How about whoever loses has to tell a secret,” Natsu suggests giving her a smirk.

Lucy isn’t sure if it’s the alcohol pumping through her system or if it’s her natural curiosity but she agrees. She doesn’t suspect she’ll lose anyway.

• • • 3 hours later • • •

“Natsuuuu who’s, your favooorite person in the whole guild?” Lucy asks leaning on Natsu’s side for support as she looks up at him browns eyes shining.

The card game being long forgotten but the pair had gone to simply asking each other questions.

“Happy, duh,” Natsu answers looking to his best buddy who is currently asleep on Lucy’s bed.

Happy had fallen asleep an hour ago and hasn’t stirred since even though the two Fairy Tail wizards had been more vocal than ever.

“Why isn’t me?” Lucy asks pouting at Natsu her tone a clear indicator of how many drinks she’s had.

“Happy is my best friend and always will be,” Natsu shrugs looking at his bottle of saki that he hasn’t even touched since Lucy opened it for him.

“If yowon’t finish this, then I will since I’m not your favorson,” Lucy slurs as she snatches Natsu’s drink the side of her breasts brushing against his exposed chest. Natsu feels his cheeks flare up and as discreetly as he can he adjusts himself. Lucy doesn’t notice and happily drinks from Natsu’s bottle as she returns to leaning against his side.

“Why were you so bummed out earlier?” Natsu suddenly asks Lucy, who is now making both of them sway from side to side.

“I wasn’t,” she sings as she downs the last of the saki another hiccup escaping her throat. She sets the bottle down and tosses her head onto Natsu’s lap.

“You’re always so warm,” Lucy smiles snuggling close to him, “Natsu, don’t leave me alone again,” Lucy mumbles her hand reaching up to feel the soft tufts of his pink hair, “Why did you leave?” She asks tugging at his hair. She finds herself wondering how his hair can be so soft when it looks so spikey.

“I was on a training mission, I told you that,” Natsu answers unable to look at her as she runs her fingers through his hair. He can feel goosebumps form on his arms, which is something that has never happened before.

“I thought there weren’t ‘posed to be any secrets between us,” Lucy pouts stopping her hands, “It’s okay if you were hurting because of what happened to Igneel and needed space from the guild...and from me...” Lucy trails off her eyes growing watery.

“It wasn’t like that,” Natsu whispers still unable to look at Lucy.

“It’s okay Natsu. It’s just when you left, I...” Lucy trails off unsure if she wants to say what’s really on her mind now.

“What?” Natsu presses looking at her now.

Lucy untangles herself from Natsu, “We should go to sleep,” she says managing to crawl to her bed and flops on the mattress passing out.

Natsu remains still on the floor and frowns. Whatever she was going to say will never come out again. He knows her better than anyone and getting her to admit any sort of feeling is like pulling teeth. She never wants to let him in sometimes.

Natsu finally brings himself to look at Lucy and she’s now curled up with Happy. He can’t help the half smile that tugs at his lips at seeing the two of them. The two people he couldn’t live without.

Natsu looks around the apartment and finds the usual framed photo of Lucy and her parents as well as Michelle right next to it. Another photo he hasn’t seen before though sits next to the family one. Natsu’s eyebrows furrow and he stands to get a closer look. He picks up the framed photo and see it’s one of Lucy, Happy, and him. Lucy is in a Mrs. Claus outfit, Happy is in an elf costume, and Natsu is dressed as Old Saint Nick himself. The shot is a photo of the two of them blushing under a mistletoe and Happy is the one holding it.

He remembers Mirajane tricking the trio into taking one. Mira had begged Lucy that morning to take her place for a Sorcerer’s Weekly family Christmas themed photo shoot Mira was supposed to do with Lisanna and Elfman, but the siblings surprised Mira with a vacation trip.

Lucy had been so excited to take an easy job that also paid good. When the group got there, Lucy was so shy at first taking pictures with only Natsu that Happy had to jump in to make her more comfortable. Natsu was so busy trying to help Lucy feel better that he forgot about being annoyed with the flashing lights and cameras. He only saw her and how happy she was.

Natsu smiles at the memory and sets the framed photo back to in its place. It’s when he turns back to look at Lucy that he notices outside the window a snowflake drifts on the window pane and soon more follow. He grins at the change of weather. Lucy will no doubt be happy to see the first snowfall of the winter when she wakes up. The weather may even snow them in, Natsu finds the thought of spending an entire morning with Lucy comforting.

He wasn’t planning on leaving Lucy in this state anyway. Natsu helps Lucy get under her blankets and against his better judgement he wiggles in next to her, Happy lays curled on top of the blankets.

Natsu stares out the window watching each snowflake stick to the window pane to pass the time when Lucy suddenly shifts to where she is practically laying on top of Natsu, her soft breasts pressing against Natsu’s chest and her smooth legs tangled around his own.

“Luce,” Natsu mutters trying to untangle her from him but she doesn’t let up even a single bit.

“Don’t ruin it,” she mumbles and nestles her face into the crook of Natsu’s neck, “You’re so warm Natsu.”

Natsu lays in the bed for the first time in his life frozen stiff and he wonders if this is how Gray’s enemies feel. Natsu was used to Lucy being handsy when she’s drunk but this was something different. He can feel her hips pressed to his and her arm crosses over his chest. Natsu can feel how close her lips are to him, so close he can feel her breath on his neck. The feeling of her breath on his neck is stirring something inside of him he forced himself to suppress a long time ago.

As careful as he can, he puts an arm around her to draw her closer and naturally she takes the bait. She snuggles into Natsu even closer and he feels her relax meanwhile his heart is racing.

It has to be because she’s cold, Natsu tells himself.

That’s when Lucy’s lips lightly touch Natsu’s neck and it drives him nuts. His arm that was holding Lucy tightens and he has to steady his heart. He doesn’t know what to do but he knows he is definitely not going to get any sleep tonight.

When you have so many things on the go

Maybe it’s simply due to the current stage of my life, but my days can feel so busy and scattered that I have to fight the feeling of being overwhelmed. Where all the different scenarios or locations in my day bring a reminder of another thing that needs tending to, anything thing that I should be doing something about.

And that sense of being overwhelmed leads to the feeling of not even knowing where to start.

How It Looks

As I work from home, usually alone, there are a lot of ways this feeling can come at me. It’s also one of the dangers of working remotely from your home: people think pleasurable pursuits are a distraction (like binge-watching Netflix shows), but in reality, it’s my other responsibilities that distract. When you work in an office, the triggers and reminders of the tasks from the rest of your life are largely out of sight, out of mind.

Anyway, here’s how it can look on any given day for me:

I’m working on my most important work task of the day, the kind of activity where I want to be most focused. As I hit a moment of uncertainty about how to solve the problem, I take my fingers off the keyboard and look out the window as I meditate

At that moment, I observe that is stopped snowing … I wonder if I need to shovel the front deck

Then I question whether I’m going to get in the lunch run I had planned — I dislike running right after a snowfall, but I know I’ll feel pressure if I don’t do it

I return my attention to the task at hand, but just as I start to type, I hear the beep of the washing machine. I’ll need to get the next load going (6 people make a lot of dirty laundry in a week)

Dang that reminds me — I still haven’t taken any meat out of the freezer for dinner. I quickly do that, and put on the next load of laundry, before I forget again

I get back to work and make some progress. But once the uncertainty of how to handle the next unknown strikes again, I glance down at my hands as I stop to think

And then I notice the papers on my desk. Oh man, I need to get that account set up for the latest software tool our youngest’s teacher wants him to use. I write that down in my planner as a task to handle later in the day when work is finished

On the opposite page, my weekly goals are listed out. Sigh. It’s already Thursday, and I haven’t even started on my annual report for the church IT ministry. The board meeting is next week…

And on it goes. Every moment of every day does not feel like this, but the fact that I play multiple roles in my life and work from a space where all those roles converge means I often come face to face with all the reminders of my responsibilities.

How I Handle This Anxiety

How does one cope? Well, different people will have different responses. Not everyone is cut out for remote work, for example.

But here’s what works for me.

Be ok with working in small, micro chunks

You have to change your mindset. Even small bits of progress are just that: progress. I have had to recognize that even if it takes me 4 weeks to complete a task that could actually be finished in 4–5 hours, that’s the reality of the current stage of my life. And it’s ok.

With 4 kids coming up to their teen years, I’m likely the busiest I’ll ever be in my life. We have extracurricular activities 4 nights during the work week (and two on the weekend). I simply have to be on my game and as organized as possible. And some of my own desires have to be laid aside.

This is serving. And it’s a worthy sacrifice.

Process effectively

Another key here is straight out of GTD. I’m being inefficient if I handle the same thing more than once. Whether it’s a piece of paper or an email, I’m always needing to remind myself to process these items (and schedule a related task) and file them away rather than leaving them around.

Do not underestimate the power of the visual trigger. Seeing these items repeatedly will cause anxiety.

Have a weekly routine

This is an area I have struggled against for a long time. Matt Perman makes the recommendation for having a weekly routine, and I have fought this idea for far too long.

But it makes sense. If you wear multiple hats and those hats represent responsibility in a certain sphere of your life, you do well to give each of those roles some attention each week. I am in charge of the IT ministry at our church. It’s not a role for which I have a lot of time to devote, but I serve better when I give it at least a few minutes each week.

I’ve recently themed my weekdays so that each one has a different role in focus. It helps me to overcome that feeling of where to start. If I have a free moment, I focus on the day’s role.

Of course, I didn’t mention the fact that it’s always good to step back and evaluate whether you should cut some things from your life (and learn to say no). That’s a given.

But some things are worth saying yes to, even if it means you’re busier than a one-armed paper hanger.

Halloween is a much-loved and highly-anticipated event at North Country School—one that takes a great deal of planning and the work of many hands. Like so many NCS events and traditions, our Halloween celebration looked a bit different this year, but still brought with it plenty of fun and excitement. After weeks spent working on scary decorations, designing socially-distant candy dispensers, putting together homemade costumes, and creating a COVID-friendly haunted house, our students were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor in an evening filled with seasonal celebration. We were, as always, thrilled to see our community adapt to new circumstances and creatively take on challenges, while never losing the collaborative spirit or playful silliness that makes North Country School so special.

Our 4th-grade social studies class has spent the past several weeks exploring the history and culture of the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois), who are the Indigenous people of the Adirondacks. During this unit, students have focused on the development of the Haudenosaunee civilization, which celebrates connection to and preservation of the natural world, as well as learning about the mythology, village life, family structure, and rituals embedded in the Haudenosaunee culture. 

Last week, the class was excited to welcome two sets of visitors. Karonhianonha and Maie, cultural educators from the Native North American Traveling College, joined in via Zoom and taught the class some of the traditional song and dance rituals still practiced by members of the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne. The class was also visited in person by Dean of Students Bryan Johansmeyer and his son Sam, who showed a video on the origins of lacrosse within the Haudenosaunee. The students headed outside to learn some lacrosse skills for themselves. The class has also continued working on their hands-on project of constructing a Haudenasaunee longhouse using materials from around campus.

In Earth science class, students are beginning a unit examining the effects of carbon on climate change. This Halloween week, our costumed 8th-graders learned about the carbon cycle, playing a game to demonstrate how carbon moves around the Earth through fossil fuels, plants, and animals. Using a playground ball to represent carbon, each student selected a different part of the carbon cycle and sent the ball through different carbon cycle scenarios. The class observed that by changing the amount of plants in the world, carbon can either become sequestered in a safe way or increased to dangerous levels in the atmosphere.

 To kick off their unit on cells, our 9th-grade biology students were tasked with making a creative and accurate representation of either a plant or animal cell. The goal of the cell project is to familiarize students with the organelles found in the cells of eukaryotes, or organisms with complex cells containing organelles and a membrane-bound nucleus. Once they completed their projects, each student presented their creation and what they’d learned to their peers. Some students chose to construct their cells from fired clay,  wallpaper, or thread, while one student presented their cell information in musical form. The class (fully decked out in their Halloween costumes) then looked at magnified plant and animal cells through a microscope, drawing what they observed.

At North Country School, we celebrate Halloween as a community on the Wednesday homenight of Halloween week. It is one of our most anticipated days of the year, with many beloved traditions including a costume parade, a scary themed dinner, games and contests, a dance, and a haunted house. 

As with so many events and traditions this year, this week’s Halloween festivities were celebrated in smaller groups and relocated to different areas of campus, but none of the scary fun was lost. Our annual costume parade moved outdoors to Bramwell Run, where everyone marveled at all of the creative homemade costumes including Katniss Everdeen (complete with homemade wings), characters from Despicable Me, and a breakfast complete with cereal, milk, a spoon, and a bowl. In lieu of our usual indoor carnival, this year students went trick-or-treating with their advisory groups, visiting different on-campus stations to collect candy from socially-distant candy stations designed by our 8th-graders. After eating a gory (and delicious) dinner of worms, green slime, and mummies in our festive dining room, small groups visited a scary haunted house in the woods conceived and acted out by the 9th-grade class. Though it may have looked a bit different than past events, this year’s NCS Halloween proved once again that by being flexible, thinking creatively, and working together, our spirit of collaboration and community will continue to shine through.

Over the course of the past week, students in our Outdoor Leadership Program have been working toward their certification in First-Aid and CPR. During their weekly class, each student practiced their CPR skills and watched videos showing them how to approach emergency situations safely. On Saturday, they were able to practice responding to emergency situations, with the help of other students playing the role of victims. The students in the class applied their emergency First-Aid knowledge to each while their peers (wearing gory makeup for extra authenticity) acted out the parts of patients needing different types of medical care. Once the students successfully complete their training, they will receive a certification in First-Aid and CPR for adults, infants, and children through the American Red Cross.

This past Saturday saw a group of our younger students finishing up their homemade swings in the woodshop, before installing their completed projects on our campus trails. The five swings, made from pine cut from our forest, were hung from trees near Hubbard Lean-to, and will surely be enjoyed on weekend camping trips and during out-times for years to come. 

This week, in addition to celebrating our Halloween festivities, we also celebrated the first real snowfall of the year. Everyone rushed outside to play in the fresh dusting of fluffy powder, creating snow angels and making the first snowballs of the season. The first snowfall means that our mountain winter is truly on the horizon, and we are all excited to begin a fun season of skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating in the upcoming months.

This past week our 7th- and 8th-grade Edible Schoolyard (ESY) classes planted this season’s garlic crop. Garlic, like many bulbs, must go in the ground in the fall, and then spends the darkest, coldest months of winter buried under the soil. At North Country School we save some of our own garlic harvest each year for planting, and this week our students, alongside Garden Manager Tess, Farm Intern Hania, and ESY teacher Elie, met in our gardens to go through the planting process together. 

Heads of garlic were first broken into cloves, and then those cloves were spaced apart and planted in the freshly turned soil. The beds were then covered in straw that will insulate the crop as it overwinters, before appearing as one of the first vibrant green shoots in the spring—an early harbinger of the harvest bounty to come in the warmer months. Each garlic clove will grow into its own plant, sending up grassy leaves and an edible flowerstalk (or scape) in early summer, and will be ready to harvest as a garlic head in late summer. The garlic grown on our campus will be stored in our root cellar and cooked into delicious meals by our kitchen staff throughout the school and camp season.
