mobility aids to consider with questionable joints: forearm crutches, especially those at a modified angle so less weight and stress is on the joints themselves. rollators, and the ones that turn into both a push and automatic wheelchair give you options if your arms get worse but you need to walk. gait trainers that have harnesses or seats so your legs don’t have to hold up your whole weight. standing bikes or removable pedals to work as a less ideal version of the gait trainer. those “outdoor steppers” or “elliptical bikes” to put less strain or knees and hips than normal walking, can add wheels to make them more stable. body braids for increased stability, custom fitted braces for problem joints. Cane with fold out seat to take breaks. weird seeming but those wearable “invisible chairs” if they fit and work for you. compression, so much compression. some people really like hand cycles, good if your wrists tolerate that better than wheelchair. expensive but those exoskeletons can help you walk when joints won’t hold you up. sorry this is stilted, i am autistic and trying to answer your questions, and these vary in terms of how much support is needed. i hope this gives you some helpful starting place!
this is sooo helpful! i neever wouldve even thought of a lot of this stuff, so thank you so much!!

Also I feel like you might have mentioned this before but I can't remember, in World Away, how quickly does Donnie establish a "lab"?
Does he still build a battle shell and tech-bo? Does he invent Shelldon? What about the Tank?
Also now wondering what his encounter with the Purple Dragons would be or is like, if he runs into them at all in this AU.
It takes him a little while, probably the better part of a year before he really gets a space you could consider a "lab". Donnie's still a genius, but his knowledge of tech prior to escaping was largely situational. He worked out how to use a computer and some programming basics from watching the scientists, he's worked out some basics of circuits by messing with the security measures around his enclosure, he's figured out some basics of physics just from pure observation and understanding of the world, but he's got a lot of gaps in his knowledge that he'll have to catch up on. Of course, as soon as he's free, April starts bringing him books from the library and eventually sets him up with a computer so he can study on his own and he covers ground really fast. It will take him until he's a few years older to catch up to canon Donnie but he moves fast.
He also has a tendency to take apart literally any device Splinter brings into the lair, and at some point Splinter decides it would be better to give him a space to play so there aren't exposed wires and screws and gears everywhere. He's not allowed to lock the door, and Splinter is a lot more diligent about checking up on him throughout the day, to make sure he hasn't hurt himself and is remembering to eat.
(In general Splinter is a lot more attentive in this AU than in canon - having his kids stolen right out from under his nose did a lot for his character development off screen.)
I kind of like the idea that 100ft Donnie actually doesn't build battle shells - after so long with his shell exposed I think he would find it a bit constricting. He does still build himself wearables that he can use for different purposes, including jetpacks and spider arms, they just connect to his body with more of an exoskeleton type design than a shell.
He will absolutely make his baby the tech-bo, the second his dad hands him that normal wooden bo he'll go "haha no thanks" and make his own. It'll take him awhile to get it right, though. And he'll definitely make Shelldon eventually, we can't leave his son out!
The tank is my favorite thing that Donnie has made so I'd hate to not have it... I think it just takes longer. Plus the kids aren't obsessed with Jupiter Jim right away anyway. They will be soon enough, basically the first time Leo sees one of the movies on TV it's over, but the moon buggy isn't something he'd recognize right away so he'd have to find it later.
Thinking of how the Purple Dragons could come into play IS interesting! I don't think they'd be classmates of April's in the universe, but still teenagers. Maybe in this timeline they meet Donnie while they're in the middle of their own heist and Donnie, attempting to get something for a project, just happens to run into him? He'd likely still be enchanted by the jackets, though, but I think he would just try to steal one haha.
They think he's some kind of weird gremlin and they don't understand how he keeps messing up their tech.

Incredibly Random Starfinder Character Concept
Okay, so. The Diaspora is far and away my favourite area of the Pact Worlds system. The asteroid belt is just … so many of my favourite things. And one of my favourite bits of the Diaspora is the House of the Void, which is an asteroid monastery, ostensibly for the contemplation of the mysteries of space, and actually for the worship of the Empty Traveller, an aspect of Nyarlathotep.
(Sidenote: such a cool aspect, btw, an empty spacesuit full of tentacles and void, that’s such a classic Doctor Who vibe)
Starfinder is absolutely chock full of cults of dark space gods, because it’s a space fantasy horror setting, and I am loving that, absolutely not going to lie. And if you want to be a cultist of a dark space god, or an ex-cultist of a dark space god, the Pact World setting book gives you the Cultist theme, in the section on Aucturn, which is the horrifying Lovecraftian living planet on the edge of the Pact World system. Because Starfinder has one of those. Heh.
Now. I don’t necessarily want to play an Aucturn cultist, because they’re a little bit on the overt end. But the House of the Void …
And, for some reason, this merged with something completely separate in my head. Starfinder has a race of bee people, the Astriapi, from the Near Space planet of Colveare. Colveare is sort of a communist theocracy, a techno-organic utopia that will potentially soon fail, because all the knowledge of how to run the technology behind it was lost with the Gap. Society is quite regimented and focused on service to/protection of the planet and its systems, and guided by a theocracy of priests called the Hierarchs who have visions of how things should be done. You don’t have to serve the planet or take up your assigned role, you can become an Unworking, a caste of essentially outsiders to society who do their own thing, and this mostly won’t be minded, but there has been heretical thoughts and leaning-towards-religious-uprisings among that community.
Now, the god those uprisings are focused around is Oras, the god of evolution and change, and I’m not necessarily sure I’d want to play an actual Colveare Astriapi either. But. For whatever reason, reading this merged with the earlier thoughts on space cults. Colveare is quite cultish, as a society (down to the rumoured secret police and brainwashing). Maybe an Astriapi raised there, even among the Unworking, might have a slight tendency towards cult thought. And if, say, a travelling Astriapi later stumbled on one of the many, many other creepy space monasteries knocking around the setting … The House of the Void. The Fastness of the Ordered Mind. Dealers choice.
Because. There was one other thing about the Astriapi that caught my eye:
“Some astriapis carve intricate patterns, pictures, or phrases into their exoskeletons as a method of conveying their individual passions and interests; the astriapis of Colveare prefer religious and spiritual poetic prose and geometric patterns, but astriapis living away from Colveare display carvings as varied as any spacer’s tattoos. Astriapi exoskeleton scrimshaw is displayed as a wearable work of art as well as a symbol of an astriapi’s identity, societal role, and personal goals.”
Spacer tattoo exoskeleton scrimshaw. That is such a fantastic set of words to string together. And, look. If we’re in Lovecraftian territory, and we’re talking about the Empty Traveller, so we are … then how gnarly could you get with a insectoid Lovecraftian cultist who could carve eldritch sigils into their exoskeleton? Astriapi tend towards religious body art from a standing start. So during their years at the House of the Void, contemplating the darkness of vacuum and the emptiness of the soul, they carved secrets and sigils and signs of their devotion into their own form.
And then. If they tried to leave the cult. If this is an ex-cultist of the Empty Traveller, trying to move past how they were raised and how they spent their early life … then that’s a hell of a thing to have to carry with them. Like the worst gang tattoos in the galaxy. You see them naked, see their exoskeleton, and scrimshawed across their entire form are these strange symbols that make you uneasy. And, if you’ve got the Mysticism to know what they mean, extremely uneasy.
Then you put a class on top of that. And obviously we’re leaning towards a Mystic, here, because cultist. And of all the mystic connections, the sources of power or devotion, the Delusion connection feels most apt. Deception is truth. Nothing is real. Reality is a thin tissue paper of botched perception over a void. And you’re not saying this because you’re still a devotee of Nyarlathotep, but because that’s what you learned on your childhood and young adulthood journey from one cult to another. Deception is reality, in as much as anything is reality. It’s lies all the way down.
You’re not a bad person. Mostly. Anymore. You’re not evil. You don’t worship a dark god, at least not any longer. But you are cynical as fuck, because you were born in an (arguable) cult utopia, and then spent your defining years in a cult dystopia, and all of them were lies.
You still have magic. You touched the void, during your time. You communed with the Empty Traveller. Nyarlathotep doesn’t care what you do with it. The Empty Traveller has no anathema. If you want to be a saint wearing a cultist’s exoskeleton, you go right ahead. You both know the truth anyway. A thin tissue over darkness. A lie across the void. But feel free.
So you do your best. You try to be kind, because it’s not like it matters anyway. You’re an ex-cultist bee person trying to make your way in the galaxy, with healing honey in one hand and mind-warping magic in the other, and the scrimshawed sigils of a dark god scrolled across your spine.
A Starfinder character. An Astriapi Cultist Delusion Mystic. Heh.
I think I like the bee people.
(Also, I love that in both Pathfinder and Starfinder, Nyarlathotep, and I’m pretty sure the other Outer Gods, don’t have anathema. They don’t care. The Crawling Chaos says do whatever the fuck you want. You will work to his aims whether you want to or not. It’s very fitting, and I love it. In Pathfinder he still has the alignment requirement for clerics, but in Starfinder mystics don’t work that way, you’ve just got to pick a broadly matching connection)

12.19. Assembly
A conveyor, flanked by rows of mechanical arms. Its most recent function was to construct the robot chassis found in the room to the north.
Additional mechanical designs have been saved to the console on the west side of the room. Raw materials are needed for construction.
The designs include (1D4):
1. Automaton Technician - A basic automaton.
2. Palm-sized Service Arachnid - Can access small spaces and perform basic repairs.
3. Portable Bore - Capable of drilling through most surfaces.
4. Capriole Chassis - A wearable exoskeleton, designed to emulate the jumping power of a horse.

Last Hour References Part 1
Poor Lighton, disoriented, confused, and doesn't even have a shirt on his back </3 At first, I pictured our boy as blond but at this point, I do think the dark hair suits him in a different way :)
My favorite thing about Heliogabs outfit is the rubber boots :) And of course I had to feature the hook since they're putting it to such diligent use
I like Aiden's freckles, they make him look so cute. And how could I deny him his signature bow? Getting ready to shoot! The glass blower outfit. In the beginning the sleeves were just as poofy as his trousers but that looked quite ridiculous. Also ever since Phi pointed it out to me, I can't unsee that the pockets on his apron form a fucking smiley face. You're welcome.
I had a very clear vision for Caviens outfit from the beginning, with the one exception that I only added the pattern for his coat at the last minute though. I like that I did that though because I think it pulls the look together and makes it seem just a bit more fancy for our mayor here.
If you talked to me at all it's been pretty clear that I like Tesla a lot and I think that's evident from the way I draw him.
Honestly, I really like Lithos overalls, he looks adorable. I was a bit sloppy with the plaid pattern but I think you can still tell what it's supposed to be.
Diego's whole get up was super clear to me from the beginning, and it was one of the ones that already had a design before I did any of the others. The feather cape isn't even that much of a pain to draw and I think it really fits the whole vibe. It was the mask that I designed fresh for these, and I'm happy with it, I think it's the most "Venecian" mask out of all of them.
Speaking of masked dancers, I really wanted to emphasise the whole insect theme with Cas. This is why he has like, this almost armor-like body suit. You know, like an exoskeleton. With every body part being partitioned in its own section. Originally, I had the wings at his shoulders like a cape, but I like the look of this better, more ornamental at his hips. His mask has a pretty clear and detailed description in the story so I didn't have to interpret too much.
Fun fact! Joule is the only person in this arena wearing a dress! I even gave her a corset for it, and - sorry to gush - I think she looks just to die for. With her role, I thought it made sense to give her something-coat like, but I wanted to be cute, so I give her a little coat dress. She even gets a silly little hat^^
I've been told that Silvins snake theme isn't quite as obvious as I'd like it to be with his costume, which uh.... fair enough. I mean, he does have a snakeskin texture through his jacket and the flaps around his hood are supposed to be reminiscient of a cobra, but I can see how that doesn't totally come through. His mask is also the one that I'm not 100% satisfied with... it doesn't look very wearable ^^'
Tiffany's outfit is another one that's pretty clearly described, so I didn't have to add all that much. The fun is in picking the coloro f her headwrap.
I have an entire folder full of tattoos for Mateo^^ He's got a lot of them and only some of them are specifically described. Although I don't think I'll be drawing him shirtless any time soon for this exact reason.
I think Tave's outfit is the one that gets the most thorough description of all them in the story, so I honestly just drew what was described. My only addition is the off-the-shoulder cape. I just think it looks cool^^
