a coswave first date fic ft. miscommunication and cultural differences

“Hello Cosmos.”

“Uh, hi.” Cosmos looked down at his maybe-friend-slash-definitely-landlord, who was staring back at him, unreadable as always.

They lingered in silence for a moment.

“You called?” Cosmos managed, finally. While Soundwave’s hospitality certainly didn’t feel like a farce, this was the third time he had asked Cosmos to help him during his off-shift.

First, it had been installing an energon dispenser in one of the habsuite blocks. The next time, he and Soundwave had spent half the night planning the station’s duty roster for the next month.

“It is good to see you.”

“You too.” Already feeling uncomfortable, Cosmos shifted in place, feeling the sting of the finally-healed welds on his armor.

“So…” Cosmos said, after another moment of awkward silence. “You needed help with something.”

Soundwave nodded. “Your assistance: greatly appreciated.”

“Sure.” Cosmos wasn’t entirely certain how much he believed Soundwave. He was happy enough to help out, but there was just something so strange in the way Soundwave looked at him, as though he expected him to do something other than pull up a seat next to Soundwave and pick up a datapad.

Soundwave pushed an energon cube over to Cosmos, who cracked the seal and gave it an experimental sniff.

“You got the refinery fixed?”

“Affirmative.” Soundwave seemed to sit up a little straighter. “However, there is now a shortage of spare parts.”

“I can make a trip to Cybertron,” Cosmos said, without thinking. It wasn’t like there was anyone left on Cybertron who would care one way or another if he showed up, but it also meant Cosmos wouldn’t be pressured to return to active duty with the Autobots—or worse, stay on Cybertron with King Starscream or whatever he was calling himself lording over everyone.

Besides, it would be good to get off the station. Even after the few short weeks he had spent recuperating from Galvatron’s attack, Cosmos had already begun to feel like the station’s walls were closing in on him. He didn’t think he would need to leave so soon, but…

“I haven’t been cleared for active duty yet,” Cosmos said, almost apologetically, but there wasn’t a reason for him to feel bad. Was there? Soundwave had told him he was welcome to stay as long as he wanted. Cosmos, riding on the heady combination of pain suppressors and adrenaline, had just nodded. He was very sure that once Optimus called him back to the Ark, the invitation would be rescinded.

But Optimus hadn’t called him back. Personally, Cosmos thought he had been doing a good job of ignoring that fact, and was immediately irritated with himself for thinking of it. He had hoped the relative quiet and tentative peace between the Autobots and the humans and the Decepticons would have

Or maybe he wanted Cosmos to reach out first. Which would be weird. He probably had other things to worry about. That was it. Cosmos archived the thought.

“You should not push yourself,” Soundwave said, as though he hadn’t asked Cosmos to help him install an energon dispenser in a habsuite just last week.

“Yeah,” Cosmos said. “About that.”

There was a quick beat of silence before Cosmos realized Soundwave wasn’t going to interrupt. He still hadn’t gotten used to the mech’s apparent willingness to listen to him. If he was being entirely honest, most of the Decepticons on the station were generally willing to listen to him—bad jokes from the birds aside.

“I’m a little confused about…this.” Cosmos gestured lamely to the datapads on Soundwave’s desk. “It’s not that I don’t mind helping you out—I really don’t. But, uh, why me? If I’m not doing enough around the station, I can pick up another shift, but I feel like you have better things to do with your time than spending your evening with me going through paperwork—not that I mind spending time with you. I just…don’t see the point?”

Soundwave stared at him.

Cosmos felt his spark sink, and he wasn’t sure why.

“Clearly, there was a misunderstanding.”

“Clearly.” Cosmos wished the itching on his welds would stop. “About what, though?”

“Soundwave thought…” Soundwave trailed off, gripping one datapad so tightly Cosmos feared the screen might crack. “Soundwave: believed these meetings were the start of courtship.”

It was Cosmos’ turn to stare.

His systems stalled as his processor struggled to make sense of what his audio receptors had clearly heard.

“Misunderstanding,” Soundwave repeated, clearly desperate for Cosmos to say something. “Clearly. Soundwave: apologizes.”

Cosmos hadn’t failed to notice the flood of unease that teeked Soundwave’s field—and he had no doubt that Soundwave could feel his shock.

“Autobots do not date?” Soundwave sounded genuinely surprised.

“Not like this.” Cosmos tried to think back to the few dates he had been on over the course of the war. There had been stops at the dispensary, a kiss in a hallway that had been ruined because someone had noticed them, awkward flirtations between him and his on-ship contact that ran their course a year before he ever returned to base. “You thought we were dating?”

Soundwave nodded glumly. “My assumption was clearly incorrect.”

Cosmos laughed. He forced himself to set down the cube.

“Dating?” He said. “Me?”

“Affirmative.”

“Is this a Decepticon thing?” Cosmos asked. “Like how every Decepticon is required to memorize Megatron’s poetry before they receive their badge? We sit down and do paperwork together?”

“Laserbeak, Buzzsaw: lying.” Soundwave said, but continued before Cosmos could feel properly irritated at the birds. “Soundwave: made incorrect assumption that Cosmos was familiar with c—” Soundwave stopped, and didn’t seem to be able to say the word a second time. “Precursors to romantic relationships.”

“Excuse me for not thinking organizing a schedule was very romantic,” Cosmos said, then immediately regretted it when Soundwave winced.

“Apologies.” Soundwave looked like he was one wrong word away from running out of his own office.

“No—wait.” Before he could move, Cosmos reached out and grabbed Soundwave’s arm. He felt Soundwave stiffen under his touch. “Crap. I’m sorry for saying that. I was just, uh, surprised. It was rude. But you were asking me out on a date? Really?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Okay. Look, I’m not—I’m not upset?” Cosmos didn’t think he was upset. Irritated, yes, at not noticing it earlier, irritated that Soundwave hadn’t brought it up until now, but not…upset. Probably. “It’s a little flattering, I guess.”

Was it? Entirely aware that Soundwave was pointedly staring anywhere but him, Cosmos studied Soundwave. The mech wasn’t bad looking, and if he was being honest, it wasn’t as though Cosmos hadn’t thought about it. It was just very, very far down on the list of possibilities.

And he liked spending time with Soundwave—not just because Soundwave apparently liked listening to him talk. He had seen hints of a quiet, earnest energy hidden beneath Soundwave’s normally stoic nature that surfaced on the rare occasions he strung more than two sentences together.

“Why don’t we go out for drinks?” The words were out before Cosmos could think about them properly. “You know. To get to know each other better.”

“Romantic…drinks?” Soundwave spoke as though the idea was entirely foreign to him.

“Yeah.”

Wordlessly, Soundwave gestured to the cube resting in front of Cosmos.

“Oh. Oh.” He hadn’t thought himself prone to nervous laughter, but for the second time that day, Cosmos laughed. “Yeah, I guess that counts.”

Before he could second guess himself, Cosmos removed his battlemask and downed the cube in one go, desperate to buy a minute to think. He set down the empty cube.

“Tell me about yourself.”

“Soundwave…is Soundwave.”

Cosmos waited.

“Third in command of the Deceptico—” He imagined Soundwave frowning before correcting himself. “Former third in command of the Decepticons. Founder of Sanctuary Station.”

Cosmos supposed he shouldn’t have expected anything else.

“Request: Cosmos shares information.”

“Right. Uh, I’m…Cosmos, obviously. Currently serving directly under…Arcee, I guess, since Prowl’s gone. No one ever really cleared that up. Um. That’s…about it.”

“Unfortunate.”

“Hah. Yeah. I bet you guys didn’t have people up and leaving your side unexpectedly.”

“You would be surprised.” Soundwave indicated his head at the datapads. He seemed to relax incrementally, and Cosmos found himself doing the same.

“So.” Cosmos said a moment later. “When we first met…you said you had good hearing.”

“You remembered that.”

“It wasn’t exactly forgettable,” Cosmos admitted. “What did you mean by that?”

The ensuing moment of silence was awkward but…not as awkward as it had been earlier. Cosmos decided to count that as a win.

“Soundwave requests…” Soundwave trailed off. “Explanation be rescheduled to the second date.”

“Second date, huh.” Despite himself, Cosmos felt the hint of a smile beneath his faceplate. “Since the first one went so well?”

“If Cosmos is willing.”

“I think I am. Maybe after I get back from Cybertron?”

“Soundwave: would like that.”

Besides, Cosmos thought with a small amount of relief, there was something comforting about dating someone who also had a battlemask.

So Many Fanfics So Little Time

This is just my list, I have seen so many (but if you want to use it it’s all yours too!). I’m not a writer. But I am a hell of a reader. Voracious one might argue. I just wanted to track my progress through the weeds of the absolutely never ending supply of Destiel and Cockles fanfic.

Read on if you want to see what I’ve read, and what I’ve thought. I am but one person with opinions - some of them may be unpopular - some of them you might agree with, but if you find something you haven’t read here, I encourage you to do so.

Honestly, this is just so I can track what I have read already, and when my friends ask, I can reference something easily. I have found some different fics on all kinds of ‘best of’ lists all over the interwebs. And I love recs - so rec away friends.

As someone who reads a solid 40 novels a year typically, I don’t come by the “I read a lot” innocently. I do actually read a LOT. When not reading fanfic (a new obsession, all things being fair), I usually read a lot of Fantasy/high fantasy, romance/erotica, and or YA (yeah, that was a bit of a ride no?). So from this one might digress that I like fluffy, cute stories, complicated and supernatural/paranormal type stories, and I sure do not shy away from violence or smut (or maybe violence with smut? *smirk*).

I have read all of these in the last 2-3 months (I will continue to add as I go). I had never read a fanfic until 2-3 months ago. A lot of these wonderful people are on here, and I mean you no offence by not directly tagging you - I’m still learning how to actually properly use this site. Links to AO3 are included (and I love you all).

These aren’t necessarily in any real order - I did read T&S first, followed by 91W, and 4LW...after that it’s just a shit show of Long or Short, Destiel or Cockles - smorgasbord. Some of these are the most popular Fics out there, and others I’ve never seen recc’d anywhere (just sort of accidentally happened upon them). So let’s get to it, shall we?

Twist and Shout - ok look. I understand the stigma associated with this one, but it was the FIRST one I read. It was the ball that shot me down the hill, and I haven’t stopped since. So. I loved it. I CRIED like a baby. SOBBED. It was not the quality of the writing but the way the story was developed and delivered. I have Never Cried Like This Reading a Story IN MY LIFE. It’s a rite of passage. Read It and have an opinion - it doesn’t need to be mine.

Ninety-One Whiskey - aka 91W, it is mentioned so much, and is SO worth the read. I continued my dive into the war fics (not typically my bag really and here I was reading 2 in a row). There are a couple of followup stories as well to this series (and yes, I’ve read them all). Although I’ll say that the original is my favourite. I often got lost in a bit of the War/Tactical descriptions, but would recommend it to anyone anyway. Ugh...the “stolen moments”...they were at the same time tragic and the most amazing things ever. You feel me? no? go read it.

Four Letter Word for Intercourse - aka 4LW. OMG just, OMG. I loved this story. I loved it so much. I think I read it in a day. Devoured it. It’s so HOT. Just read it. If you haven’t you’re missing out. LEMME AT IT. I loved “knowing the secret”, and had some major anxiety about that realization dawning (I had to take a breath, and be like, no, no, this is gonna be a mess, but it’s gonna be SO GOOD - I was not disappointed). There’s more than one work here too - read them all. PLEASE.

Memories Bring Back Memories (Bring Back You) - This was the first Sobs one I read, but it sent me on a spree. this is the Memory Loss one. I have one piece of advice here - read everything by Sobsicles. You can thank me later...just go to her page, and fucking sort to supernatural (or not, read it all!) I’d list them but I’d fucking seriously be here all day. Also, her tags make me laugh so hard.

Orpheus - I love this one too, Tattooed!Cas, my LOVE. paired with Mechanic!Dean, my HEART, #help. Read this one in one evening as well. (I was on a roll). It’s a one night stand that turns into more (much like my last relationship)....hmm...maybe this is why I was pulled in - although to be fair that is the last similarity to my shitty love life! I do not remember how I stumbled onto this one (tattooed Cas may have been the draw...tbh). Read the warnings though, there is some triggering stuff in this one - but if you can handle it, it’s definitely worth the read.

Ad Astra - This is another short(ish) one, just one chapter. And by that I mean that this is written like a very long poem. Cas as a star who has visited Dean many times over the years of his life, that culminates in 4x01 barn scene. It’s ‘awe’ sad. ‘puppy dog eyes’ sad. The writing format took me a bit to understand what was happening - it’s my lack of poetry knowledge, not the writing.

Never Have I ever S2

SPOILERS.....Turn back now I’m serious.

I’m waiting....

Okay cool your fault at this point

I was fairly critical of NHIE S1, I won’t lie. And I’ll be real I still stand by the fact that NHIE S1 was fairly meh overall.

But holy shit, they knocked this season outta the world man. The show really really found its proper footing this season. They were smart to keep the cheating for only two episodes and explore the repercussion for the other 8.

1.Devi Vishwakumar.

Let’s start with the main character. Devi still does immensely fucked up shit this season. Dating two boys and have them find out in the MOST humiliating way possible. Yikes. Being a really sucky friend to Aneesa and starting that rumour about her (inadvertently) and pretending to her. Stalking her mother and being possessive of her. The really awful apology that was pretty self centred, a bit not good.

But she really does do her best to improve and I am SO proud of that. She uses her father’s advice and apologizes better to Aneesa, she actually handled the Ben and Aneesa dating WAAAAY better than I’ve seen some people handle things like that. I might’ve blown a fuse if two of my friends had 4 tickle fights and had major PDA sessions when we were trying to do a group project. Like she handled that shit fairly well all things considered. Devi actually gets into the beginnings of delving into her trauma and her temporary paralysis and healing from it. I

really see how the label ‘crazy’ weighs on her and how she blew up with it and the message of destigmatizing mental illness. (Crazy Aneesa and Crazy Devi) Her properly bonding with her mother and watching videos of her father and remembering/honouring his memory hit REALLY HARD (since I lost many people in my family recently and that fear of forgetting them has been real). Devi is actually beginning to heal from the loss of her father by strengthening the relationship with her Amma. And the slap from Paati was so so needed, it really gave her a better respect of her mother and fixed the problem I had with Devi mouthing off so much to her Amma. I live to see good maamiyar marumagal relationships. Her relationship with Paxton is really good and it gets developed very logically and having her be scared of being pathetic but in the end she accepted her own self worth and stopped chasing after them which was good.

Overall Devi really blossomed into her own developing person and I actually like her so much more this season.

2. Paxton Hall Yoshida

I was honestly, like genuinely sad last season he was like 80% eye candy with not much else going for him. Paxton had so much faith as a character and Ms Kaling has really pulled him into such a better person this season.

Paxton got hit by a car before swim season, lost his ticket to college and wow, got two timed by a girl he liked all in two episodes. If he was salty about that for more than one season I would’ve completely accepted it. Cause that’s a bad public humiliation.

Paxton episode really really made me love him as a character (honestly more so than Ben) I think because I heard Paxton’s entire worry and irritation that he was being underestimated and no one really expected him to go to college from a friend of mine not more than a month ago. That shit is real, and it hurted my friends a lot that people were really underestimating them and just seeing them as a dumb athlete who has no hope of college. It’s really nice to see Paxton actually want to go to college and learn Japanese American side with his Oji-chan giving him advice and supporting him. And him bringing his grandfather to speak about the internment camps, that seriously do not get spoken about enough.

Also him putting effort and making a genuine effort to work hard and bring up his grades with Devi and therefore bonding with her was really nice to see. I wouldn’t mind them being endgame but Devi does really work a lot better as his pushy Indian mom/best friend/tutor. And Devi getting mad at him for him expecting him to hold his hand throughout really hit well. Was it deserved yeah. But Devi also did blow him off after promising him to study so his anger is justified there. I’m just kinda vibing with Paxton like coming up and taking a better interest in school and being a full 3D character. And that one scene where he gives the extra credit presentation and Trent high fives the man. Classic.

Can I also just say, it’s kinda valid that Paxton didn’t want to date her in public. Is it a dick move...yeah? But he’s within his rights to ask and she’s within her rights to deny. And he didn’t press her once she said no, he went along with it. And what Devi pulled on him is awful, and speaking as someone who’s seen popular kid cliques. Reputation really is important. Like what Devi did made Paxton lose face, if he gets back with Devi he ain’t gonna have any respect left in him. And Paxton was pretty right in deciding to not date her publicly, like even in the end he knows that his reputation is shot for what he did. Do we even know if Paxton has friends that aren’t fixated on his social status? Because becoming a social pariah without having any support of friends is gonna hurt like a bitch. Lord knows how Paxton gonna deal with it. I think Trent might be his only homie after the social downfall he will inevitably face.

I’m just gonna say, Paxton is my favourite now and I’m really rooting for him. Something I decidedly did not do last season. I’m happy Ms Kaling developed him so much and got me interested.

3. Ben Gross

Ah. Ben. Ben’s not my faaavouriteee.......like he’s fine. But I don’t love him. I can definitely see him and Devi becoming an almost endgame couple though. Especially with S2 ending.

Ben is fine and he’s pretty developed, especially with his episode in S1 and it was good he took a backseat this season and let everyone else star. I feel like he’ll come back strong next season though.

Personally do I ship him with Devi? No. I’ve been in a friendship with the similar competitive dynamic as Ben and Devi. And it was terrible. We loved to argue and we got each other’s super brainy side as Devi puts it. But we pushed each other faar too much and even the small things became arguments and each pthers achievements became jealousy. So yeah....I don’t have too much faith in the dynamic due to personal bias, but I’d love to see how it gets handled.

Also my brother Ben, PDA is a thing and it is common courtesy to refrain from it. Man’s really going at it with Aneesa half the time. But also the moment where Aneesa sort of choked on the presentation and Ben’s irritation at it gave me BAAAD vibes. It feels like while Devi can match him, they might push each other too far,

4. Kamala

I LOVE KAMALA. Girl is an ENTIRE vibe. My sweetheart, love of my life. I could go on. I really like her development as well and the banter between her and Nalini. The part where Nalini practically said she looked like a call girl and she was like ippadi potathaan velaila mariyaatha kidaikum. I legit had to pause, scream in laughter for a good few seconds.

They had such a good story with her and wanting to fight against the fact that they took her work and didn’t credit her and everyone was telling her to like take it bowing. Prasanth’s advice unfortunately checked out to me, because I’ve been told that all my life. My dad says it a lot and I know he doesn’t say it cause’ he doesn’t believe in me, but he loves me and wants my life to be easier and for me to succeed and his experience is that he’s had to deal with things like this and fighting won’t help. So yeah, what Prasanth said did not rub me the wrong way at all and I agreed with it and I’m fairly disappointed about that. I get that she got nervous and had cold feet about marriage but I do hope she and Prasanth can work this out through communication. Because I really don’t feel like Prasanth is the bad guy here. It’s just a miscommunication.

So yeah, a LOT of Kamala’s storyline continues to really hit me hard.

5. Nalini Vishwakumar

Nalini really had so much more screentime to blossom. I love that she has a good relationship with Mohan’s amma. It’s wonderful and I love it. Also I was shocked to see the house in Chennai. Like this house...in Chennai. The Chennai I’m used to and the Chennai they are used to are different Chennai’s. Basically wealth gap is crazy as hell and I was lowkey highkey confused if the actually shot this shit in Chennai. But props to the directors for putting some proper Tamil vibes in there. Like the scene where they kaala thottu kumbudurathu (touch the elder’s feet) before they leave for the US is so real and so vibes. I like that they decided to bring paati back. I was like hoping for it.

Also they really went at developing Nalini’s character as a workaholic mom who doesn’t get her daughter. That’s also a really common thing in Indian households with one working parent so I’m happy they portrayed that. I’m happy Nalini actually has a life outside her family portrayed and is still such a typical mother that it hits HARD. I love Nalini and she really developed as a character dealing with grief from Mohan’s death, the wish to move on with Dr.Jackson but knowing that she isn’t ready yet.

They gave her character a life and proper working outside Devi and it really has shown to develop her character and impact her relationship with Devi. The advice to “just say yes” works with cousins and younger siblings as well, I’ve heard it before and used it..and it saves so much time. Especially with small children.

(A memory I have is of my younger cousin going on and on about a princess and a castle and fighting a dragon and the witches and so much fantasy shit and ended with do you wanna come? I just clocked off my CCA’s and I had no energy left to question it so I just went yeah sure. Easiest decision, and 10/10 advice. )

6. Aneesa

I’m not gonna lie. I was skeptical of Aneesa and I didn’t like how Devi saw her in the trailer. But Aneesa reminds me so much of me....and its killing me.

Also the scene where she charms the hell out of Nalini and paati ma has literally happened to me before. Most of my Indian friends hate it..because I was raised with a lot more traditional manners with my grandparents so me and my siblings all are old fashioned which parents LOVE. And I really saw that Aneesa charming them and Devi also realizing, Damn none of my friends actually treat my family the way they should be treated, perks of having an Indian friend.

Also the scene where she gets Devi out of trouble is so so real. Because if you have one responsible friend that you parents trust, you could lie the hell to them, get you homie to back you up and it will work. Personal experience. So yeah, Aneesa character resonated with me a lot.

I also like that she wasn’t just a popular 1D Indian girl but she was genuinely cool and actually had proper issues and development where she gets more open to Sherman Oaks and actually kinda properly rebels against Noor, with having Ben as a boyfriend.

I feel like Aneesa has a lot more potential for growth, especially with the relationship with Ms Noor and Aneesa acting as a foil to Nalini and Devi’s. Also, I feel like Aneesa can grow within her social status at school as well and have Devi maturely handle it. Aneesa I feel will really really challenge Devi’s ability to be mature.

7. Eleanor and Fabiola’s plotlines

Okay like actually, major props to Ms Kaling man. This show touches so so many teen issues in one goddamn show. Emotionally manipulative relationships. So SO good. A lot of newer age relationships have a much more subtle and dangerous line of abuse that’s hard to find out. Like honestly it took me a while to see it as well and I realized oh fuck. oh fuck...I see it it’s bad. They really got the essence of Eleanor’s flamboyance matching with Malcom? (is it Malcolm..fuck it it’s Malcolm now) his “suaveness” and traditionally charming tendency. It made sense and it’s very realistic how Eleanor got played like a damn fiddle. I also again feel that the make up was faar to quick but I really appreciate that Eleanor got her own storyline with her step-mom and understanding of relationships instead of the show hyperfocusing on just Devi. I respect that a lot. Petition to get a Eleanor narration episode.

Fabiola’s storyline also was well taken. It’s an interesting added layer to the queer experience and how queerness can be expected to be performative and but really its all about being more of yourself. The idea that queer people don’t owe nobody anything or have to perform an ideal version of queerness and Fabiola struggling with that kinda hit. The part where they talked about her mother learning to support them and being Cricket? Queen/King. Like being trailblazers for the POC community and the LGBTQ+ community having overlapping struggles. Again, I liked that Fabiola was getting more personal screentime and less of her story revolving around Devi’s.

8. Everything else

I liked that there was more Tamil being casually thrown around. Like the Kamala vaadi to hold the suitcase down as they zipped it together was funny and relatable. The accents were really interesting because I promise you, I had no clue what they were saying sometimes. Nalini’s dialogues in Tamil were like immensely difficult to understand, and my Tamil is fluent. This isn’t a criticism... I’m fairly certain the difference is to do with the regional difference. American Tamil and Malaysian + rural Tamil slang are going to have huge accent differences so there’s no surprise that I found Nalini’s Tamil hard to understand.

I’m really really really meh about the Kamala and Manish/Mr Kulkarni thing. I still think she should sort it out with Prasanth maybe but I’m open to seeing where it goes. I might change my mind with it.

This show like any other show had its highs and lows. But I really really do feel that NHIE season 2 managed to truly figure out what the hell it wants to do and developed into a very strong and very entertaining show in terms of representation and diversity. I’m looking forward to season 3.

some feelings abt touya and bnha 302 in general! (long post)

jesus this whooooole chapter makes me so so so sad for touya, like he's canonically a crier and i just have all these images now of him crying off to the side while enji looks at his other kids and gives them the time of day. knowing that he was/is a frustrated crier makes the fact that dabi cant cry cuz of his burned tear ducts that much sadder ohhman

one of the things i cant get over is how touya was SO shunned by his dad that when he went to go tell enji about his fire turning from red to blue, he says "i might be as awesome as shouto sooner or later!" like?? this boy is 13 and shouto is 5 yet he's talking like the brother that's eight years younger than him is better than him and thar it's just a fact. the sky is blue, enji wants to beat all might one day, and shouto is better than the rest of his siblings. nevermind that he's only five and just wants to play with his siblings (and dont even mention to me how shouto says he wants to play with "touya and them" cuz im gonna fucking cry abt it. like even though touya's accepted he's bottom of the ladder in this family, shouto clearly wants some sort of acknowledgement from his older siblings and especially his older brother. IM FVCKN SOBBN). enji has made it clear in this family that shouto was what he was looking for and everyone else is not as important, and i knew this from shouto's pov but it's kinda wild to see it implied so casually in touya's words.

"you'll be glad you created me! i just know it!" HOLY SHIT. god my heart. oh my fuck. literally all enji had to do was show up to the fucking mountain, and he couldnt even do that? what the hell?? your son asks you to go to the mountain, you tell your wife not to let him go traim but she said she couldnt stop him, and instead of going yourself to make sure he's okay and BECAUSE HE ASKED YOU TO COME (and with an actually valid reason, no less! fire changing colour is kind of a big fucking deal!!!) you just?? let him go and let him stay there??? my god the amount of times touya must have burned himself and the trees with tears in his eyes. ahhhHHH!!!

what kills me (and touya too soon?) was that we thought before the back story started that enji forced touya to train till he burned up. then when 290 came out--and definitely after 301--we thought maybe touya overtrained himself and burned up. and sure, he was definitely overtraining, but to find out that the burns that "killed" him started just bc he was crying so much he lost control and didnt know how to ease up on his flames? he was upset and literally trying to get himself to stop crying, and then he just set himself aflame and burned up cuz of all his emotions??? that HURTS. holy fuck.

i cant believe natsuo's feeling lowkey guilty for not socking enji in the face like he wasnt EIGHT???? and let's be real, enji woukdnt have fucking listened to natsuo telling him to talk to touya--he already wasnt listening when touya would straight up say "look at me" and when even rei said touya just wanted enji to look at him and notice him. listen, i know sometimes miscommunications happen in families and children are embarrassed to admit they want attention and so their parents remain unaware that theyre not giving their kid something they want, but touya was as clear as can be on MANY occasions, and even rei agreed touya needed the attention and enji just wasnt listening.

also i know there was discourse abt touya being sexist by telling natsu that "the women in this house are good for nothing" and mb it was partly diff translations cuz i feel like saying "this house" makes it specific to rei and yumi instead of all women everywhere, but even disregarding that--i think it's a valid thought for him to have when rei wasnt standing up for him (where he could see, at least) and yumi admitted herself that she was too scared to interfere and so just tried to fix things and keep appearances. i feel like based on what touya's seen from them, it makes sense that he has that opinion. (also gonna mention that i think rei's and yumi's choices also make sense and i think they were valid, seeing as how they were afraid as well.)

and poor natsu being woken up in the middle of the night (what was implied to be often enough, esp cuz it seemed they share a room and their futons are close) bc of touya's pain. that's a lot of emotional responsibility for an eight year old, and it is also so sad that at 13, touya didnt have anyone else to turn to but his kid brother. at 13, i remember being fully aware of the distinction in maturity between an 8 year old and myself, and it sucks that touya couldnt go to anyone but a younger child with all his pain. i bet yumi being too scared to interfere translated to touya as "she wouldnt help me" and thats another reason he didnt go to the 2nd oldest when he needed to vent. (also not related to this but how the FUCK was natsuo so tall at 8 years old? wh a t)

this chapter. this fucking chapter. my heart aches for touya, and it's just such a huge fucking shame he didnt get the attention and validation and support he needed. there must have been workarounds so that touya could safely use his quirk. there weere DEFINITELY better ways to support your son through a self-destructive quirk, ways that involved actually being there and seeing him. i feel like if someone showed him the attention he needed and talked him through how to better control his emotions (and by extension, his flames) and a positive and healthy way, he could have been someone so great. and if he ever learned how to set aside the way he felt infefior to shouto and saw that shouto just wanted to play with his cool older siblings, it might have been really beneficial to see that there was someone there who thinks he's cool and gave him attention just bc he was an older brother, who needed him when everyone else in the househild didnt seem to need him.

and lastly, the fact that the chapter ends with rei saying that shouto is the family hero and that shouto will have to face dabi?? and it makes me angry that shouto has to take on that responsibility. that he was five and suffering for things he wasnt even a part of, couldnt be properly aware of, bc he was so young. he just saw that he was separated from his siblings and that his dad bullied his mom, then grew up shouldering enji's heavy goals and high expectations and abusive training alongside the barely-there memories of his older brother who died (i say barely there bc if natsu didnt even know shouto liked cold soba, shouto was definitely not around enough to have solid memories of touya before he "died"), and now he has to do the emotional labour of fighting his villain brother (who i bet shouto lowkey empathizes with when he thinks abt it late at night) as well as suffer the physical consequences of that agni kai. and it makes me angry that he has to do that, bc he's a Good Guy and he probably feels he has some sort of filial and familial responsibility. he's only 16. he just wanted to play with touya and them, and now he has to deal with this horse shit dabi's causing cuz his dad's an emotionally neglecting asshat who couldnt see past his dumb fucking ego until he saw shouto play with a bunch of kids during shou's remedial exam a decade after his eldest son burned himself to death. what the fuckety fuck.

lastly, since we saw touya burn uo the way he did... did he really just like... burn so much his jaw fell off, and that's how they found the jawbone? cuz holy hot (BURNING too soon???) damn that must have been painful as all hell. i wonder if next chapter we get to see if someone found touya at the park and helped him out and sorted out the jaw bone thing, or if we finally get to see if deku wakes up lol.

anyways this chapter hurt my heart big time, and i kinda wanna draw kid touya crying while being overlooked by his family to let out some of those feelings but we'll see.

and i still stand by my idealistic and naively optimistic hope that dabi gets redeemed and they soend some actually time together as a family (without enji. or at least, with an enji that has apologized to touya in seiza. like, forehead-to-floor apologize.)

does this hope sort out how dabi redeems himself, seeing as how he's murdered people in cold blood and shouldnt be excused for that bc those actions are also inarguably terrible? no. not sure how he could redeem himself for that kinda stuff honestly, but it doesnt mean i dont still somehow want the todoroki sibs to get along, cuz im weak for mending families.

also id like to send a huge kudos out into the world to rei todoroki for being firm for once and for also not running away from her mistakes like her asshole husband has been. i really admire and respect that. she was afraid and being abused, but now that she's been away from enji and has had time to heal, now that her and shouto are in the mend and she's seen that her eldest son is alive and a villain, she's a place where she can acknowledge that even though she was a victim too, she played a part in touya's emotional neglect and she's taking responsibility and that speaks to some incredible fucking strength. damn.

i hope one day that dabi realizes the same in regards to his mother and natsuo, who shouldered a lot of his emotional pain and suffered the consequences of his outbursts (even though his emotions are valid and his outbursts understandable, he still hurt rei and put a lot of pressure on natsu), and i also hope he sees that for all that he hates his father, his whole existence revolves around enji and it's a shitty place to be (and then he'll have ANGST abt it and that shit will be!! so good!!!)

yeah i think those were all my feelings. i had so many lol. their family situation is so difficult, i hope they all turn out okay and alive and healing.

oh i guess i also wanted to say that i kept calling enji an asshat and asshole cuz he was for sure, but i still think his redemption is valid and im glad he's taking those steps to be a better person by being a better father. i dont know if id want his family to forgive him for all that horrible shit he put them through (im personally hoping that no matter what anyone else does, natsuo will choose to to cooperate in the healing of his family as a unit but will never forgive enji) but i think it's good of people to try to be better than they were yesterday regardless of whether or not they get forgiveness. i dont personally like enji, but i dont hate that he's getting a redemption. i just hope it's a redemption that makes sense and forces him to put in the work, and isnt something like a death sacrifice for shouto or dabi. i want him to be alive and i want his redemption process to hurt like a fucking bitch while he forces himself to make better choices and be a better person, cuz redemption isnt supposed to be easy in the slightest. i GUESS all the crying he did in 302 was a good start.

Kyle Valenti had prepared for a lot of up and downs in life. It came with the territory of being pre-med.

What he had not prepared for was coming home for Christmas break after his very first semester in college to see that his father had moved in Alex Manes so he didn’t get shipped off to war. He was even further less prepared for the following two weeks of seeing Alex Manes in increasingly more compromising situations--bent over to get something out of the oven, reaching up to get laundry detergent, stretching in the morning, parading around shirtless before bed, choosing tight little biking shorts to run in, sweating after working out, working out, just to name a few.

By far, the last thing he’d been prepared for was, when his parents were at the station’s Christmas party, getting a little too drunk on whiskey with Alex Manes in a hot tub while discussing Lord of the Rings which somehow led to giving him head on the back porch like a fucking disaster who had no self control.

Now it was morning and Kyle was replaying the entire night over and over, staring at his bedroom ceiling with wide eyes. Up until college, Kyle had figured he was 100% straight. He’d seen cute guys, but no one he’d actually want to do anything with and, to him, that felt heterosexual enough. But those measly three and a half months that he’d spent at UNM had completely fucked up his world. Who knew so many boys got hot after high school?

But, still, he’d never really thought about acting on it outside of a fleeting, intrusive thought. Those thoughts got more frequent and stayed a little longer with Alex in his house, but he thought he had control. He thought it wasn’t a problem. Clearly he was very wrong.

In the next room over, Alex was sleeping in what used to be the guest bedroom. Disgust filled his mind as he remembered his parents explaining that having Alex around would be just like having a brother. You grew up together, they’d said, it’s no different than an adoptive sibling. There was nothing brotherly about the way he thought about Alex.

When someone knocked on Kyle’s door, he sat up and immediately started thinking of ways to explain himself. It was an accident, he didn’t mean to get on his knees. He simply fell. Alex went to help him, it was totally innocent when his shorts slipped off his hips. Water was heavy, you know? Besides, he wet ass-print on the wall had to be dry by now, there was absolutely no evidence that anything had been done for a long period of time.

“Come in,” he said, voice slightly strained. Funnily enough, he wasn’t even hung over. At least, not on the whiskey.

Alex peeked his head in, seeing a little hesitant as he stared at him. His hair was ruffled, his septum piercing crooked, and, instead of his usual shirtless morning body, he had on a baggy sweater that engulfed him entirely. Kyle wanted to die. Why the fuck was that attractive? Who was calling the shots in his brain? He’d like to have a talk with them.

“Hey,” Alex said, clearing his throat, “Could we, uh, talk for a sec?”

“Yeah,” Kyle said, fidgeting in his bed.

Alex entered the room completely and closed the door behind him. He seemed hesitant to come near him, but he did anyway. Kyle prepared himself for the absolute shit show about to come. He knew it would be bad because, honestly, he didn’t know what he wanted him to say. Did he want to be rejected? Did he want to find out what his lips tasted like? They’d skipped the kissing stage on accident.

“Um,” Alex whispered, his sleeves pulled over his hands as he tried to look natural. He just looked scared. “I just wanted to apologize about last night. I-If I made you feel like you had to do something you didn’t want to or just made you feel uncomfortable in anyway, I’m genuinely sorry. The whole lead up is blurry, so I don’t know if...”

“No,” Kyle jumped in, shaking his head, “No, dude, no. That’s, that’s not what happened.”

Alex eyed him and nodded slowly, not quite believing him. Which made sense. They had a weird time in high school. Or, just, bad. A bad time in high school. Why exactly was Alex the one apologizing again?

“I’m sorry,” Kyle added, “If I made you feel like-”

“No,” Alex said, voice soft and adorable and what the fuck, “No, I wanted it.” Kyle swallowed harshly. Was it getting hot in here? “I just, I know how you feel--or, felt, I guess--about me being gay and I wasn’t sure if there was some miscommunication happening. Because, like, I don’t actually remember any communication happening at all.”

“No, look, I’m sorry. About high school. All of it, I was stupid and confused,” Kyle told him, watching Alex’s eyebrows furrow a little bit, “I’m still stupid and confused. I do know I don’t... regret it. But I am still trying to wrap my head around it.” Alex didn’t say anything, simply nodding to show he was listening but didn’t want to put any words in his mouth. “Like, does this mean I’m gay now?”

Alex smiled a little in relief, shaking his head, “No.”

“Well, do you know what it does mean?” Kyle asked, “Because I definitely enjoyed myself, but I have never wanted to do that before the last, like, week. Then I get the opportunity and I throw caution to the wind. How’s that for impulse control?”

Alex gave a little laugh and it eased Kyle’s mind a bit more.

“Um, could mean a couple things. Could mean you were just experimenting which is normal. Could mean you’re bi or something. It, uh, it takes awhile to really find a good word. Even then, it’s hard to know if it’s permanent. Stuff’s weird,” Alex explained, shrugging his shoulders. Kyle licked his lips and then moved his legs to sit criss-cross, giving Alex a space to sit on his bed. It took a little bit of silent confirmation before he did so.

“So, I’m gonna be confused for the rest of my life?”

“Not necessarily,” Alex said, biting his lips momentarily and Kyle really felt like it was on purpose, “Like, for me, I know I’m gay. I know I only want to have sex with men. But sometimes I still am like, okay, am I really though? Which, I don’t know, I think it’s pretty normal ‘cause, you know, heteronormativity is a thing.”

“Heteronormativity?” Kyle repeated. Alex again gave that sweet little smile.

“You know, like, thinking being straight is the default in society and, because of that, it makes it hard to understand your own sexuality and your own outlook on life because, well, it’s different from what’s been instilled in you from a young age,” Alex rambled. Maybe he was a little hungover because it felt like he was getting a little too fancy for first thing in the morning.

“Right, so what I’m hearing is that wanting to see you naked and wanting to get your dick in my mouth was the beginning to a whole goddamn deconstruction of the way I view my own personality and, by extension, existence,” Kyle responded. Alex’s cheeks were a little flushed as the more blunt statement, but he nodded nonetheless. “Cool. Nothing quite like an existential crisis for breakfast.”

Alex gave a more genuine laugh this time and Kyle felt like, of all the things to be confused about right now, his mouth was not one of them.

“So, you’re not mad?” Alex clarified.

“No,” Kyle said honestly, “But I’m sorry I was a dick to you in high school for clearly my own issues.”

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not.”

“Yeah,” Alex agreed, licking his lips. He again pulled on his sleeves. “So... What now?”

Kyle didn’t have an answer. In fact, all he could do was stare at Alex and his lips and his cheekbones and his crooked little septum ring. He glanced up at Alex’s eyes for a moment before letting his gaze drift back down to his lips, feeling a little overwhelmed with desire. It was really hard to have a full freak out about things when Alex was literally sitting on his bed and looking too good to fathom.

Kyle lifted his hand mindless towards Alex’s face and was only remembered that it was weird when Alex flinched in response.

“Sorry,” he said, “Can I?”

Alex looked a little concerned about what he was asking for, but he gave a short nod to say that he trusted him not to be cruel. Kyle took that as the best thing he’d ever seen, but also acknowledged that he had a lot more to work on than just his own self-discovery. He should definitely work on making things up to Alex.

But, for that moment, he straightened out the little metal piece and rested his hand on the side of Alex’s neck. Alex just watched him, waiting for him to be the one to make the first move. So he did.

Kyle moved in slowly, telling himself he’d already gone way further than a kiss and so it shouldn’t be scary. It was still terrifying. He could feel Alex swallow harshly as he got close. Then they closed the gap.

The kiss was short and PG and, honestly, a little awkward. Yeah, they definitely need to fix some other things before this would be as fun as it was last night.

Alex gave a short little laugh as they pulled apart, eyes sweet and kind and really helping Kyle make more sense of the world. How the hell had he ever been mean to him?

“Maybe we should go downstairs so you parents don’t get any ideas?” Alex suggested. Kyle nodded, tempted to kiss him once more just because. He knew it would be a little weird, though, and wasn’t sure if Alex wanted him to, so he didn’t. “And, don’t worry, I’ll keep your little revelation to myself.”

“Thanks,” Kyle said, feeling a little relieved over that despite not having considered that he would’ve told anyone. This was so fucking weird.

“And, when you go back to school, you know you can always call me if you need to talk about it. I get that it’s hard,” Alex offered. Man, Kyle really wanted to kiss him again.

“Can I kiss you again?” Kyle asked. Alex laughed and rolled his eyes.

“Just a little bit.”

“Fair enough,” Kyle agreed, leaning forward with a little more confidence. The kiss was better than the first one, more comfortable and expected. It still didn’t go past anything you’d see on Disney Channel, but it had Kyle feeling ready to start his day.

“Okay,” Alex said against his lips, “Ready to go pretend like we didn’t defile your family’s backyard?”

“Yeah,” Kyle said, “But I can’t wait to do it again.”

Alex snorted a laugh and stood up off the bed.

“You sound so sure it’ll happen again.”

“Oh, it won’t?”

“We’ll see.”

And Kyle was definitely willing to wait.

Episode 21: This Ol' Gal's the Leader of the Amazon Tribe!

*checks watch* Oh, hey, it’s time for more Ranma 1/2! Hope things are going well for you, person reading this. I’m...fairly sure I know what’s coming? I just don’t really remember exactly how it happens. Will I like it? Will I not? We’ll have to see, next paragraph, after I’ve seen the episode again.

That was...not what I was expecting? This storyline is both moving much faster and much slower than I remember, if that makes any sense. How? Well, let me recap it a bit first.

The episode starts with someone flying into the city on birds. More specifically, a bunch of small birds supporting a larger bird who doesn’t seem to fly, and the person is riding on that bird. It’s weird. She arrives in a construction zone, an old woman with a walking stick taller than she is, and she says something about looking for her son-in-law. Actually, she says it a lot. A steel girder almost falls on her head, but she hits it with her stick in mid-air, shattering the metal into dust, before running off.

It cut from that to Ryoga attacking Ranma. Why? Well, Ryoga doesn’t really need a reason, but this time he does. Namely, the whole Ranma kissing Akane thing from the last episode. Of course, Ranma was in cat-mode at the time and doesn’t remember it at all, no matter how much Ryoga tells him it’s real. After Ryoga gets splashed with cold water, Ranma is then attacked by Sasuke and Kuno for the same reason, and combined with piglet-form Ryoga’s help, Ranma actually gets kinda beat up in the process.

Heading back to the home, he realizes that Akane’s probably mad if it is true, and we see her in the dojo, but she isn’t really working out the way she usually does when she’s mad. If anything, Akane seems conflicted. Ranma shows up to talk about it with her, and immediately apologizes. Akane asks if he remembers doing it, and he admits he doesn’t. Then, Akane wonders, did it not matter? Would Ranma have kissed anyone, and it just happened to be her?

Not understanding what is going on, Ranma stumbles over answering too long, until Akane starts actually getting riled up, calling him a flirt. That pisses Ranma off, so they get into an argument. There’s also a scene where their dads are playing shogi, and they wonder about that pink cat Shampoo sent them, especially since it’s unlikely she knew about Ranma’s fear of felines.

The answer to that comes as Ranma goes to take a nice, hot bath to clean off after the fights he’s had. The cat jumps in with him, and before he can freak out about his greatest fear being in the room, Shampoo emerges from the bath right where the cat had been, and she’s very naked. Yep, the cat was her that whole time!

In a case of Ultimate Bad Timing, Akane comes to take a bath herself and sees Ranma in the bath with a naked Shampoo. We cut directly from that to Ranma practicing what to tell Akane later. Namely, that he won’t apologize or back down, instead being firm on the fact that it wasn’t what it looked like and he did nothing wrong. And we wonder why Ranma has relationship problems.

Akane appears, and she seems fine...before knocking Ranma into a pond. Not long after the water changes him into his cursed form, the old lady from the beginning appears, and Ranma has a very hard time fighting her. She won’t explain who she is or why she’s fighting him, then disappears. That felt...a bit pointless, honestly.

Later, Shampoo comes by the house again, with food. It seems she has moved to Japan officially, and lives and works at a nearby ramen shop. As everyone’s eating the food, the old woman shows up again, taking a place at the table to eat. It’s revealed that she is Shampoo’s great-grandmother, named Cologne, and she’s there to make sure that Shampoo and Ranma get married. Soun fires back about the engagement Ranma already has to Akane, but Shampoo seems to think she has a good argument for why she should be the one to take Ranma’s hand.

She takes him into the bathroom and uses cold water to turn back into a cat, and it’s revealed exactly what happened. Heading back to China, she was shamed for failing to either kill or marry Ranma, and thus had to train with Cologne. They did that at Jusenkyo, for some reason, and Shampoo fell into the Spring of Drowned Cats. So, apparently the curse is Ranma’s fault, and thus he has to marry her. He rightfully points out that’s utter nonsense, but Cologne doesn’t care.

They fight for a bit, with Cologne showing off one of those moves where it looks like there are a bunch of her but only one is real. Ranma uses food and Cologne’s hunger to figure out the real one, but that doesn’t really matter. She’s a bit impressed by him, but still knows he’s far too inexperienced to ever really stand a chance against her. Then she hits him with her stick, and says something about how he’ll be begging to marry Shampoo in a few days.

Why is that? Well, it seems she did something quite diabolical. She apparently hit a pressure point that has caused Ranma to be incredibly sensitive to water. Even cold water feels boiling hot, but it still activates his curse. To turn back to his preferred form, he’d need to use hot water, but with how sensitive his skin is, hot water would be torture to endure. Thus, he can’t turn back into his uncursed state unless he does exactly what Cologne tells him.

Let me start with the stuff I like about this episode. First off, this is a really interesting way to build a story arc that’s very different from the ones that came before. All the story arcs in season one were pretty typical for anime. Each event led directly to the next, it all felt like single stories that just took multiple episodes to tell.

But if you didn’t know the last episode was part of a story arc, you wouldn’t guess that to be the case. It felt like a single-stand alone episode. And it kind of was. Only two things really carried over: Shampoo the Cat being mailed to them, and Ranma kissing Akane at the end of the episode. In fact, when I saw Ryoga and Ranma fighting, it took me a second to realize what they were talking about, because I didn’t think that event from last episode would be carried over.

I really like how it was done, though. The show made it pretty clear that Akane was feeling some feelings about the whole thing, but Ranma was too caught up in the idea that she’d just be plain angry about it to miss what she was really telling him. She wanted him to tell her that actually it did mean something that in his cat-state, he still sought her out and was affectionate towards her. She didn’t want it to be meaningless. That’s really cute, and the miscommunication there was less annoying than it sometimes is and more adorable. Free relationship tip: learning how to properly communicate to your partner is really important!

The concept of finally introducing a character who is actually a better fighter than Ranma is good. Cologne isn’t Ryoga or Shampoo or Kuno. He can’t just beat her in a cool fight, she’s far more experienced and skilled, something that from here will kind of drive the entire arc. The fact that Shampoo ended up with a cursed form that Ranma finds so terrifying is also interesting. She’s kind of scary to him anyway, this unrelenting force who won’t leave him alone no matter what he does, so making her cursed form that but to the tenth degree is pretty neat.

Last good thing: I really love how nonchalant Kasumi is with Shampoo. Like, to her it’s just like, “Oh, Shampoo! You’re back, that’s lovely, do you want to stay for a meal?” Either Kasumi doesn’t understand the complex romance plot going on, or she does and finds it not reason to stop being a good host.

What didn’t I care for? Well, like I said at the start, it feels like this arc is moving too fast and too slow at the same time. In one episode, this story resolves the Akane/Ranma kiss from last episode, the mystery of the pink cat, introduces a new focal player in the story, and curses Ranma with something he’ll have to fix. That’s a lot to happen, and I was really shocked the pressure point thing happened in this episode too.

But at the same time...I really found my interest waning in the back half of this episode. The Cologne fight just isn’t super gripping, to me anyway, especially when the technique she uses just feels very bland. There’s a good five or so minutes, about a quarter of the runtime of the episode, that I was just bored in.

I also like reintroducing Shampoo, only three episodes after she left, was a bit of a mistake, especially when she’s basically a main character from here on out. I know she was very popular, but even then giving the audience some time away from her let’s them miss her, if that makes any sense.

There was originally going to be a Cologne based Character Spotlight, but then I decided not to because we still haven’t seen a lot from her, and also I’m very tired and my birthday was Monday please stop bullying me

So, yeah, if you couldn’t tell I’m kind of meh on this episode. It’s not bad. It’s not great. I enjoyed the first half quite a bit, but the back half was a little more of a struggle. It was in fact a big enough dip that I’m putting this episode fourth from the bottom, just above the P-Chan introduction episode.

Episode Review- The Real Ghostbusters: Beneath These Streets

Oh, let’s just get this over with.

The Ghostbusters are facing another dry spell in terms of ghosts to bust as they haven’t seen any action in two weeks. But this time, the city is facing another strange phenomenon. Apparently, there’s also some sort of massive heatwave that only seems to be affecting Manhattan, as all other areas aren’t experiencing such high temperatures. And there are a series of unexplained earthquakes to boot. Ray, upon doing some research on the matter, speculates that maybe all three of those things are related somehow, as there’s unusual pockets of energy beneath the city. The others, on the other hand, are more focused on keeping cool during the heatwave, and Peter steps out of the room to take a cold shower. However, when he enters the bathroom, the water pressure goes ballistic, with the showerhead spaying water all over the place and the toilet bowl spinning around. When the other Ghostbusters hear the commotion, they hurry into the bathroom to find Peter wrapped up in toilet paper, sitting in the overflowing tub, shaken but overall unharmed. Winston ends up draining the flooded bathroom, but they notice a large mass of water hovering on the ceiling for a few moments. Which is clearly unusual. Sure enough, when Egon consults his P.K.E. Meter, they determine that there’s a high concentration of ectoplasmic energy within the bathroom. This leads to Ray getting super excited, declaring they must be dealing with water ghosts and saying they should investigate the sewers to figure out what is going on. Despite Peter’s obvious reluctance, with him saying it’s probably just a wild goose chase (not to mention the late hour), the Ghostbusters are soon investigating in the sewer.

During the sewer investigation, Winston notices that it’s unusually warm down there, despite the fact that it’s usually cooler underground. Egon gives some sort of explanation for this, but it’s mostly a bunch of big nonsense words as he then admits that he doesn’t actually have an answer. But that’s when Ray mentions an old urban legend of sorts he heard as a boy. According to this urban legend, the island of Manhattan is actually held up by a giant stone pillar, and if that pillar ever broke, Manhattan would sink. Not sure if this is an actual urban legend or something they just made up for the episode, but I’m leaning towards the latter, as quick Google searches don’t reveal any mention of it outside of this episode.

Right after Ray mentions this urban legend, they come across this extremely corrosive orange gel substance flowing out from the wall. But when another earthquake begins, Peter and Ray end up getting briefly separated from Winston and Egon. In the process, they accidentally stumble across no less than 40 ghosts lurking about down there. Ray is all for catching them on the spot, but Peter points out that they only brought two traps with them. And besides, nobody is paying them for this. They can’t just go chasing after every single ghost that crawls out of the woodwork, after all. While this is going on, Egon, being true to character, is quick to try and gather up a sample of the orange gel, but collecting some proves to be difficult, as the orange gel just ends up eating through the glass sample jar he was using. So Egon is forced to collect his sample with a Ghost Trap instead. While the Ghost Trap does hold the sample, it’s clear that even that is hazardous, as the Ghost Trap begins emitting sparks.

Upon returning to the Firehouse, Egon places the sample of the orange gel into his analyzer and then proceeds to head to bed in order to allow the analyzer to do its job overnight. And he falls asleep unrealistically quickly. (I WISH I could fall asleep the instant I close my eyes.) Peter and Winston soon follow his example. Ray, on the other hand, is still too gung ho about the whole thing. As such, he decides to head back out. While I admire his dedication, it’s not as if the investigation couldn’t wait until morning. There’s no sense of overtaxing himself and denying his body rest. Nevertheless, he heads back to the sewer, taking Slimer along for the ride by bribing him with food. Upon going back into the sewer, Ray ends up falling into a large pool of sewage. But while submerged in the sewage, Ray notices a strange looking plug at the bottom of the pool. Unfortunately, the moment he makes that discovery, Ray finds himself surrounded by a large number of ghosts. Ray instructs Slimer to head off and get help. And as Slimer flies off, Ray blasts away the strange plug he discovered, which results in him going down the drain (which probably scarred the number of children who feared going down the drain in the bathtub.)

Sometime later, Janine arrives at the Firehouse to begin her shift. (Hooray for the show allowing Janine to actually go home in the evening!) Shortly after her arrival, Slimer charges in and, after a few moments of miscommunication, Slimer is able to convey the message that Ray is in trouble by spitting out the Ecto-1’s license plate and showing her a picture of Ray. Don’t ask me why Slimer swallowed the license plate in the first place, because I have no idea. So Janine heads up to inform the Ghostbusters, going so far as to threaten to fire them if they don’t head out after Ray in five minutes.

Before they head out, though, we get a quick moment of Egon announcing that the analyzer has finished analyzing the orange gel. Turns out, it’s some sort of super lubricant with extremely high P.S.I. readings. Winston is able to sum it up by comparing it to axel grease. We then get an awkward moment of Janine seemingly apologizing for threatening to fire the Ghostbusters. Peter tells her that she did nothing wrong, but they still have to borrow her car, as Ray had taken off with the Ecto-1.

Meanwhile, down in the sewer, Ray has woken up after losing consciousness off-screen. While he’s exploring, he comes across a large stone pillar, which he realizes is the Pillar of New York from the urban legend. However, in the process, he discovers the pillar is actually turning, meaning it’s actually some sort of gyroscope that keeps Manhattan level. Which leads to him figuring out that the orange gel they discovered is actually a lubricant meant to keep the Pillar of New York turning. Of course, there’s no time for him to really celebrate this discovery, as ghosts suddenly appear, surrounding him. As Ray tries to fend them off with his Proton Pack, he fills in the blanks, concluding that the ghosts in the city had gone down there to try and block the flow of the lubricant so the Pillar of New York would break, resulting in the island to sink. And that’s why the city has been experiencing the sudden heat wave and earthquakes. Because without the orange gel keeping the gyroscope lubricated, it started to shake and generate heat.

Of course, when things start to look hopeless for Ray to escape alive, the other Ghostbusters arrive on the scene, helping him drive away the ghosts. When the ghosts are driven off, they all take a moment to observe the Pillar of New York, wondering who built it. While Egon offers some suggestions, such as the Babylonians or the people of Atlantis, he ultimately decides that’s not as important as making sure the gyroscope can keep functioning properly. So they unclog the flow of the orange lubricant, and the day is saved.

Of course, nobody really believes their stories of the Pillar of New York. But since they did manage to put a stop to the earthquakes, the Ghostbusters are still given payment for their services. And the episode ends with Peter and Winston fixing up Janine’s car (since it ended up falling into a hole during another earthquake) while Slimer is allowed to stuff his face with a small feast, as a reward for his small contribution.

This episode was just stupid. Really? A giant pillar/gyroscope is holding up Manhattan? What moron thought something like that up? Yeah, people do believe in some pretty dumb things. (Just look at the seemingly growing number of Flat Earthers.) But this was just….too out there. What, do ALL islands have giant gyroscopes under them, too? Not only that, but it was a really boring episode. I just kept wanting it to be over. The only thing that’s worthy of note is this small moment when Janine is trying to wake up Egon, and he mutters a half-awake apology to his mother for burning down the garage. Can we get the story behind that, please?

So I've finally watched CA:CW.

And I hated it.

So I got the DVD copy of CA:CW so I could watch it with Subs and figure out what everyone else in the Fandom is screaming about beyond that last, iconic fight WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE NOT THST ICONIC 'CAUSE IT'S JUST A BLEND OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA, PTSD, RAGE AND MISCOMMUNICATION ALLLLLLL WRAPPED INTO ONE, MASSIVE BATTLE-BURRITO!!

Let's start from the beginning, shall we?

We're shown the book, shown Bucky being put under, shown The Incident.

Cool: Bucky's innocent. Nice to know.

We have Lagos, we have a fight. That explosion seemed to me like it would take out more of the people on the ground had it gone off there, but we can't exactly see who's in that building, right? Can't see those casualties beyond Ross' Damned Photos.

But that Entire Thing was a set up! We are told Three Times that Crossbones had this planned, that he KNEW they'd be there. That's most likely why the guys dumped their gear, made of weapons and other handy stuff, because not only can you escape looking like a Civ, but now the Civs could mistake the attacks by the Avengers for "the payload" as attacks against Other Civs. That would stir up more unrest.

So they get home, America is five hours behind, so whilst Steve stews in PTSD brought on by Crossbones mentioning Bucky and Wanda listens to the TV saying a Wakandan Embassy had been in that building (hmm, how "coincidental", how "Convenient for Ross"?) We have Tony doing his talk at the University. Where he uses BARF, mind-bending technology to help people with Childhood Trauma, PTSD and any other memory-related problems. But then he's both slapped with Pepper Not Being There and Mrs Spencer and her Dead Son. When Tony is obviously not listening to the teacher wanting to get more money and the PA who's trying to apologize for the prompter problem, when There's Something Off.

He arrives back With Ross. We have no idea how long he's been speaking with him, and during Ross' Entire Speech he occasionally glances round, but looks mostly at Tony, as shown by a shot from over Steve's shoulder, where Tony is sitting.

The Guilt-Images are for all of the Avengers, but Ross probably knows by now as There Is No Lawyer or Third-party with Little to No Bias for a New Freaking Law that Directly Affects them.

Natasha asks "and if we don't sign?" And Ross says "You Retire", he is claiming this supposedly-democratic law not even in play yet as Already Firm Law.

Then Tony says "I have an electromagnetic headache" whilst visibly shaken and furious.

This being not long after his last use of New Technology that Uses Multiple Memories to form a moving 3D image. After he's seen one picture of a boy, heard one Mention on their name and Then Recites It Back To The Others.

I'm seeing a lot of coincidences and, you know what they say about those, right?

So all Tony can think about is Responsibility and his fears, he moves and speaks with fury whilst making coffee, a common stress-relief. He's locked up in his head with Anxiety and PTSD thumping on his brain.

So all Tony hears is his own fears being spoken aloud by the others, Vision doesn't even help by saying that world-threatening crime increased with Tony's appearance as Iron Man.

But Steve is hearing Tony and Rhodey basically backing up Ross. He hears them resoundly saying "these Accords won't give you a choice, these Accords Will Cage Us", like the ice encaged him, like Fury tried controlling them with HYDRA puppeteering them.

It's the same conversation, they're all just hearing different things.

Oh.

Then Steve gets a text saying Peggy's dead and he runs off without a word, because everything is Too Much and he just lost his last link to the past, the last person who remembers him not as Captain America, but as Titchy Squirt Steven Grant Rogers.

But Bucky's alive.

And he's Steve's last chance.

Else his PTSD and Imposter Syndrome is gunna screw him over.

Oh, and Sharon, who also said (for 18 seconds) a quote from Peggy about sticking it to the man, tells him they've been told, right after The Incident, to shoot on sight.

So he goes after him, activating Bucky's PTSD because he's a Prisoner of War, then destroying a tunnel and being made a criminal, before getting arrested and told No One is getting a Lawyer, which goes against Basic Constitutional Rights.

And what does he see when marched in, but Natasha acting like a worker drone because she's a spy and Tony walking down towards them like he's one of the leaders for the entire thing, calling someone on the phone "Sir".

And we can all think of Guy Number One for that, right?

I had to pause the movie again at this point because none of these Idiots communicate properly. They both run with thick prides and biases, like humans do, and screw up everything as they go.

Tony and Steve talk and they set eachother off about three times more, each. Tony shows the pens that started America into WW2, Steve asks about Pepper, Tony says about his Dad and Steve says "I met him", Tony says "I know, he told me a billion times and I gated you back then for it but now I just think you're kinda cool for your abilities" and then says about keeping Wanda in the compound, to which Steve yells at Tony (and believe me: when your dad just yells at you and someone he believes in yells at you, that's A Big Fucking Trigger Right There.)

So Tony leaves to cool off.

Then Sharon comes in, hands Steve the live feed of Bucky and Steve realises this all was another set up by the guy who then sets the Winter Soldier loose again.

Neither Steve nor Tony help Bucky with his PTSD and Steve is still determined to not be alone, to follow his "no man left behind" ideal but this time centered around the key comfort against his PTSD and Imposter Syndrome, who is Bucky. Even if Bucky's already unable to remember him well...

Until he does, after they Almost Drown again.

Yey! More Triggers!

So now Steve is terrified and suggests they go to Tony, but Sam says "No. Accords" and Steve's like "Yup, hecc we're going in the Buggy."

Cue Tony being told he has 36 hours.

Cue Peter once again speaking about Blame On The Witness and triggering Tony's self-guilt.

Cue The Next Fight Scene.

Cue Rhodey getting hurt by Steve's Team and Vision.

Steve and Bucky, meanwhile, stew in their own and eachother's PTSD, Imposter Syndrome and good old fashioned Guilt.

As Zemo escapes and gets to Sokovia as Tony finds out about Zemo.

Tony sets off Bucky and Steve again, they find Zemo as Bucky has Mega PTSD Material around him on All Sides, Tony has his Childhood Trauma brought up with the video of them dying Just After He Said To His Dad That He Loves Him (still don't agree with that, don't forgive your family for being abusive just because they're dead. Especially if they were never caught and tried for that crud.)

So Tony fights running on Fury and Trauma and Betrayal as Steve and Bucky fight based on Pure Fear, PTSD and not as much Imposter Syndrome as before but Steve just wants His Anchor and Bucky just wants to Live.

But the last few times Tony was Betrayed, he was almost killed.

That whole fight shouldn't have happened and it's Seriously Messed Up that it Did. My feelings were reflected in T'Challa's face as he sees that fight happen.

Then Tony is Abandoned, Again. No one trusts him anymore but for Rhodey and Some Kid in Queens.

And Steve loses Bucky, Again, because Bucky doesn't want to be a danger to anyone until he's fixed.

And that just, pardon my language, Pisses me the Hell Off.

Team Cap? Team Iron?

Fuck that, Neither Side was Right. Both were Wrong on So Many Levels, None of that was honestly the least bit legal and I was Horrified that Ross got away with What He Did because, at No Point, did they ask for the Avengers to say their side of things, at No Point did they say "you can ask questions about this set of Laws before they're put in place"-

WHEN LAWS LIKE THE DISCRIMINATION ACTS AND ARTICLE 13 WERE ANNOUNCED, MEDIA OUTLETS BROADCASTED TO EVERYONE ABOUT THE LAWS THAT WERE BEING ARRANGED AND DID THIS HAPPEN FOR THE ACCORDS?

NO! NO IT BLOODY DIDN'T!!

EVEN THOUGH IT WAS APPARENTLY A PLANET WIDE NEGOTIATION!!!

NONE OF THE NEWS OUTLETS EVEN MENTIONED IT WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE AVENGERS!! OTHERWISE MRS SPENCER WOULDN'T HAVE GONE TO SHOVE HER SON'S PICTURE INTO TONY'S CHEST!!!

A Slow Death

Where once their meetings might have raised suspicion among Ingvald's Garlean superiors, there were all too few who would now question his habit of summoning Orella aan Steelhand to his chambers after his promotion. If the imperials thought her cowed, he told himself, it would have been through his doing. The thought invariably made his stomach turn.

Ingvald received a modest salary as an officer for the Garleans, comparable to the savings he might have accrued as a tenured Kingsguard knight. It was only barely enough to offer him the means to cook for himself in his private lodgings every once in a while, and without exception, he saved such occasions for whenever he knew Orella would be present. They ate without fanfare, with the knowledge that she was welcome to as much as she would like. She ate far worse than he did on a regular basis: he could see it in her frame, in the way she stared at her emptying plate with sunken eyes and took second and third helpings of even the blandest foods he made.

He noticed her relative silence for over a year before he said anything of it; had she not been particularly sullen one evening, he might not have commented at all.

"What is it?" he asked at last. He set down his fork and knife and leaned forward on the wooden stool he'd purchased for himself off of a washerwoman selling it for a pittance; he'd only been given the one chair in his chambers, and he'd left that for Orella out of some extension of courtesy.

She glared down at her plate, stuffed another bite of roast dodo into her mouth, and said nothing. Orella always avoided eye contact whenever she was frustrated with him; the one time he'd called her out on the habit, some few weeks before the Garlean invasion, she'd swung her training sword directly into his groin but had later divulged some slight he'd made in front of Grand Steward Atkascha. Now she sat before him and the silence between them grew more cumbersome by the second.

"Fine," he snapped, and stood from his stool. "Bugger me for hoping for some conversation, then." He wasn't accustomed to swearing and knew it was childish, as childish as his holding her to any sort of unspoken expectation, but he nevertheless stomped into his washroom to tear off the dark leather jerkin he'd been given to wear beneath his uniform.

"'Conversation'?" she shot back, only after he returned into the dining area in a bleached undershirt and culottes. "That's all you've had in mind for this evening, then, Tesserarius? Or is it 'Optio' now?"

He didn't realize he was pacing until he stopped, turning to stare at her in incredulity. "What the-" He took in her face, drawn with fatigue, her gaze fixed on him with a fury that nonetheless went well beyond him. As the implications of her words at last sunk in, he recoiled. "No. No, gods, no. That you think I would- After all this time...!"

She rose to her feet and gestured around the interior of his chambers. "Forgive me for asking, my lord. I wasn't certain, what with you living so comfortably. We aan aren't used to such luxuries, you know."

"Orella-"

"Stop it."

"I was promoted nearly four moons ago." Four moons, and they'd seen each other only twice since then. It was the longest they'd gone without considerable contact, save the stretch after they'd been hauled from their respective cells in the torture chambers. "You've said nothing of this until-"

"Until you prodded me for an answer. Happy now?"

"Gods, how-" How must he have looked to the rest of the world, if even she of all people had thought him willing to turn imperial for a slightly warmer room and a slightly cleaner bed? He lowered his voice to a vehement whisper. "I know why I made tesserarius, Orella. It's so they can point at me to everyone else, to the Mhigans and the Garleans and all the rest, and show how damned inclusive they are - that nice little lie that anyone at all can move up in their ranks, if only they try. And then they conveniently have their savage to scapegoat, should everything in the territory go tits-up. They don't give a single fuck about me or my swordplay or anything else. They only ever chose me because I look enough like them for them to tolerate me - to keep themselves from getting too intimidated."

I hate them, he longed to say, but the words stuck somewhere on the back of his tongue.

But now Orella was staring at him as he'd only seen her stare at him a handful of times since he'd met her. It was an expression he wondered if he had ever been worthy of: she took in his measure with something akin to wonder, and as always, he was never certain he knew what she saw to merit such study. Then she wrenched her gaze away, as if it took her a great effort to do so - and worse still, her face was screwed up as though she were about to cry. "I'm sorry," she said.

"No." She could have retorted with any number of insults or accusations, but her apology rankled him in a way he could not entirely explain. "Don't." She of all people needed to offer no explanation as to the things she had endured to cause doubt to fester. Not even he knew the extent of her torments over the past several years, and neither would he insist on dredging them up to satisfy his own curiosities. "You... We haven't seen each other. You didn't know." And if he hadn't made his allegiances clear to her in the meanwhile, the blame for any miscommunication could only fall to him.

"I saw you with the others of your rank, conversing and laughing and... that is, I assumed the worst. I won't do so again. Not ever again."

Ingvald did recall the meeting: earlier in the week, he had been summoned out to the courtyard to go over safety procedures for some visiting cousin of van Baelsar and had endured their banter. Yet his thoughts fixed instead on a point further in their past, when Orella had discovered him for the first time since the invasion, after several of the same men who had so recently tasked him with the protection of a Garlean dignitary had been intent on beating him unconscious in a shower stall. He did not illustrate to Orella the connection between the past and the present; she had enough cause for misplaced guilt and regret without him adding to the burden. "I know you won't."

They cleared their plates away from the table and washed them in his small sink, speaking no more until Orella expressed a desire to sleep.

And this, at least, had not changed between them since the invasion: sharing a bed had been his only real source of intimacy even before the Empire, in the days when the Kingsguard would bunk together out of convenience or necessity. Despite the early hour, despite the shame that lingered between them, they at once divested themselves of all unnecessary clothing and curled up into each other's arms to partake of whatever peace they could gather until the night ended.

One guess which pairing I fell head-first into this time...

Need more time? No problem, I’ll give you a hint. It involves SHEILD’s #1 eye in the sky and his long-suffering, slightly anal-retentive handler. The purple Avenger and the dead-not-dead agent. You know them, and if you don’t already love them, these fics will fix that for you. Sorry in advance for how long this is, but there are so many fics and I have too many feelings.

College AU

Phil Coulson was more than halfway through his six year plan, and everything was chugging along nicely.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t foreseen a cocky junior Art major waltzing into his life, or his floor.

So this is within the same universe as Bulletproof, a stony College AU fic, but I never read that one. Phlint College AU’s I love, but not so much with stony? I have weirdly subjective preferences when it comes to fics.

However, I will rec this one with my dying breath. It is Phil’s POV, and I have such a soft spot for college age Phil now, thanks to this story. As a college student myself, I felt that everything was really realistic and I believed everything. More than that, I want to give both the boys a hug. They need it after this.

Also, as you’ll see later on in this list, I love the “fuck buddies” trope with hidden feelings that are so not hidden it’s embarrassing. And heartbreaking. As much as I want to hug Phil, I also think he needs a swift kick or seven.

Safety Not Guaranteed by foxxcub words: 4k+ (nearly 5k) Rating: M

Phil was informed of the Sigma Iota tradition of White Elephant two weeks before Christmas break. He’d heard of other chapters on campus having holiday parties and had figured the SI’s did the same.

But he was quickly learning the SI’s didn’t do things quite like other fraternities.

Short, sweet, and funny. Of course this would happen to them, within a group of people where blatant, verbal communication is a practically a foreign notion. I laughed, I sympathetically cringed, and there are sexytimes, too. What’s not to love here, really? (Wade has a great cameo, too, so of course this was going on the list)

I'll Learn To Dance If You Promise Not To Laugh by torakowalski words: 10k+ rating: E

A College AU in which there are long distance relationships, misunderstandings, and no one actually spends any time in college.

The insecurity in this fic kills me in the best way. Clint puts on an act sometimes, acting stronger and suaver than maybe he feels. When your bf is older and cooler and smarter and too good for you, what else can you do? Naturally, that strategy works great until it doesn’t.

Thor, Darcy, and Jane are wonderful and I just want more of them! I would never have pictured them as Phil’s roommates, but it works so well and watching Clint interact with them is great.

Everyone deserves a hug: Clint for being a sweet idiot, Phil for being a well-meaning moron, and the roommate squad for putting up with their shit and making it fun.

Kindergarten teacher Clint Barton has never been in a healthy stable relationship in his life. Hell, mostly he doesn't bother leaving his house unless his best friend drags him out for 'socialising'. He's happy with his life as a hermit; he has a dog, and fifteen sticky tiny humans to teach core skills to. That's more than enough commitment for him

But that's all about to change when the new school year brings along with it some major surprises, such as Phil Coulson, the widowed father of one of his students and owner of the bluest eyes Clint's ever seen.

I am rec’ing the whole series here, because I want to curl up and live in the world the author created. It has everyone you could think of wanting to see from both general Marvel canon and also Agents of SHIELD. Look, as I’m writing this, I want to go back and re-read the first fic. As the author states in the tags, it’s totally Fraction’s Hawkeye, aka my favorite and the best (soz MCU Clint, you’re cool too, sometimes).

This could have been so stupid. It’s a kindergarten teacher AU, it very easily could have been something I read two paragraphs of and clicked away. But it isn’t. When the author says fluff and angst, they mean it. It hurt my heart and made me giddy by turns. Also, sexytimes. But the feelings! I connected so much with Clint in this, and felt so much for Phil, and the payoff feels so earned by the time it happens.

The supporting cast is phenomenal, and it may be my favorite of this whole list, which is saying a lot because I love them all. Even the smaller cameos were hilarious and made me smile.

EVEN IF YOU READ NO OTHER FIC ON THIS LIST, READ THIS SERIES.

Pre-Avengers (mostly)

Slow and Soft by onthewaters Words: 23k Rating: E

When Coulson adds Barton to his team, he expects smartassery. Except there isn't any...

This is it. This is the story I was looking for and craving without even knowing it. That may make zero sense, but I don’t know how else to put it. The writing and the storytelling here are on another level, and I mean that in the best possible way. It shows them getting together - including the beginning of the incredible friendship between the trio (Nat, Clint, and Phil) and Nat and Clint's bond - as well as the most believable/subtle pinning I’ve read in awhile.

Phil's characterization is the best in this one. It’s his POV, and his personality just shines. This is one of the ones I really treasure, and I won’t apologize for how extra I am about it.

Operation Snapdragon by Laura Kaye (laurakaye) words: 10k+ rating: E

They’d decided to call it Operation Snapdragon, Jasper had explained, because snapdragons meant “deception” in the language of flowers.

It would be more accurate to call it Operation Rip Out Phil's Heart And Grind It Beneath The Feet Of Mobsters, but apparently there wasn't a flower for that.

The humor is on point, and I am a sucker for pining!Phil and sarcasm. It’s a fake marriage fic, where they’re undercover as a couple. Tell me that doesn’t sound perfect for these two. BUT WAIT, there’s more: they’re already a thing before the fake marriage mission, and Phil has been feeling insecure in the relationship! Voicing concerns in a healthy manner is out of the question, naturally. Idiots.

It takes place over six months, featuring flashbacks to how Phil ended up in a strip club run by the mob, smiling lovingly at his husband while a mobster talks about how great they are together.

Plenty of miscommunication on par with the trope, and you just want to give Clint a hug, becasue you know what’s going on, but Phil can’t catch a hint. It has art at the end, too, which is adorable.

The Clothes that Make the Man by orderlychaos words: 17k+ rating: E

There was something comforting in the way Clint could focus on Coulson’s dry, deadpan tone as bullets and explosions sounded around him. Come rain, hail or bursts of experimental weaponry, Agent Coulson would be there, calm and controlled in that damn suit, like the personification of order against chaos.

However, contrary to rumour, Phil Coulson was not born in a suit. This is the story of how Clint Barton glimpsed the man underneath and fell in love.

(Or five times Clint saw Phil outside of a suit and the one time he wore a suit himself).

IT’S A FIVE AND ONE, boys, we’ve made it. This my favorite trope in all of fanfiction history. It’s also pre-avengers for the first half, but then kinda after? Coulson isn’t dead and doesn’t appear to ever have been, but in the later chapters, the Avengers are a thing? I’m not sure about timelines. It’s an AU, and it’s awesome.

The important part is that there’s Clint POV and insecurity on both sides, as well as really sweet moments and pinning galore. Plus, it’s rated E, so obviously that too. It’s fairly lighthearted in general as well (meaning there are feelings and angst but there aren’t feelings and angst, if you know what I mean), and after some of the angst on this list, lighthearted fics are a gift.

Coulson Lives - Reunion

Give a Dog a Bone by Laura Kaye (laurakaye) Words: 86k+ Rating: E

What do you do when your dead best friend turns up alive after three years? a) yell at him b) hug him c) ignore him to his face while following him around the Tower like a creeper d) maybe fall in love with him a little e) all of the above

Best summary, or best summary?

This does not have enough kudos or recognition. I know it’s at nearly 960, and that’s a great amount, but it deserves so much more! I still think about this story, and it’s another one I want to re-read soon.

When I mentioned Pizza Dog, this is one of the ones I had in mind.

And Kate!!! His friendship with Kate is everything I’ve ever wanted. And his friendship with Tony, and obviously Nat. Basically, I love Clint having friends and getting to be petty becasue holy shit he deserves to be petty after everything SHIELD has put them all through. At the same time, nothing feels like Phil!whump or emotionally beating a character down unnecessarily.

Clint does everything I want him to, and some stuff I didn’t even know I wanted him to do. There is so much pain, as you’d expect, but there is so much payoff and the balance is perfect. I connect with Clint’s characterization in general, but especially here. Just yes.

Phil’s journey with the loss of his hand and adjusting to life with a prosthetic is also really cool, and something I hardly ever see. Same goes for Clint’s hearing loss. He isn’t deal, but and is completely capable/confident in himself, but there are struggles at times that make me wonder if the author has personal experience because it’s stuff I recognize from my mom’s experiences.

Clint's never pretended to be deep. He's just the guy who sits back and watches, the guy who makes the shot when he needs to. He's seen a lot of crap in his time, sat through a lot of fucked-up scenes to get to where he needs to be, but this, now--he can't stand another second of it.

This feels like an argument for why the pairing works, and I loved it. It really deep dives into the issues all three of them - Clint, Nat, and Phil - have in a way that feels so real and relatable to me, personally, that it cut me right to the core. I still can't get over the incredible friendship between Clint and Nat in this. I loved every minute, and every win was so, so deserved. I want to curl up and live in the world the author created, tbh. Also, there are sexytimes. Can't forget those.

Tony also has the line early on that nearly made me cry: "Someone has some serious fucking explaining to do, because you," he pokes at Coulson, "we fucking buried you." The scene is already so emotionally charged, and then this and it kills me becasue of all the off-page backstory and emotional weight it gives for the rest of the story.

I’m emo and dramatic about all of these, but I mean it when I say it feels like proof for why Clint and Phil work. Just, yes.

Coulson Lives - some point after the off-page reunion

The Best Bad Ideas by copperbadge words: 17k+ rating: M

When Clint Barton put on the Captain America costume for a mission, he didn't count on Phil Coulson's reaction. Coulson didn't count on Clint crashing his new team to do something about it.

Oh yeah, you read that right. It’s just as funny as it sounds, and all of a sudden you get hit with the angst and it works. Even so, this one is a lot lighter and it’s fun. Cap and Co’s reactions are just as funny, and the gossip sessions between the ensemble are some of my favorite bits. (side note: why have I never considered the badass-ery that would be a Nat and Melinda May friendship?)

Pine Lake Oasis by infiniteeight words: 32k+ rating: E

When SHIELD gets intel that an arms dealer might soon be receiving Chitauri technology, Fury sends Clint and Coulson undercover to establish surveillance, ingratiate themselves with the arms dealer and his right hand man, and possibly intercept the sale. The catch? The arms dealer and his lieutenant are apparently posing as a couple, which means the best way for Clint and Coulson to get close is to pose as a couple, too. The longer the op goes on, the more Clint wonders which relationship is more real.

MORE PRETEND MARRIED TROPES! We can never have too many, in my humble opinion. This one is very different from the mobster one, because it’s set in suberbia with plenty of nosy neighbors and also some arms dealers who are also posing as a couple. Frankly, I’m not sure anyone is posing as anything in this fic when it comes to feelings.

The domesticity in this story is so good and it’s so sad watching them get used to it and hearing Clint think it can’t last...but then! And everything feels earned by the end, instead of just tossed in. You watch them get closer over the course of the story and I love it.

They’re sassy and sarcastic and funny, and so true to the characters we’ve come to love that it all feels so believable.

Just torakowalski Fics

(Yes. I did add a whole section just for one author. If I hadn’t, every category would be overrun, and there are so many good fics out there! But this author gets me, and more importantly, gets Clint and Phil, so it had to be done.)

Been Looking at You Forever words: 18k+ (closer to 19k) rating: E

Clint and Phil are friends. Friends who have sex. That’s all there is to it. Honestly.

Fuckbuddies with a healthy dose of accidental relationship because whoops, who knew “casual” sex with hidden feelings would lead to complications and more feelings?? Set post-Avengers movie, and including all the main faves as side characters.

Guys, I’ll be real with you for a second. I don’t ship either stucky or Tony/Pepper, and yet this has both as background but blatant relationships. And I still don’t ship them, but I believed it within the story and I wasn’t bothered? If that doesn’t tell you how good of a writer tora is...

I am addicted to the way they write Clint and Phil, and the fact that it doesn’t look like they’ll be writing more for that pairing makes me hold on tighter to the stories we do have. Sure, the premise of this fic is a trope, but the relationships between the characters puts it on another level for me. This one will make you crave more of this trope out of all your fave pairings, trust me.

And All the Clocks Came Back to Life Words: 4k+ Rating: T

Phil Coulson isn't a big fan of birthdays, but they're better than being dead.

Pizza Dog is a character again, and so is my favorite apartment complex in Marvel Comics continuity. This is the sweetest story (it’s also the shortest one on this list *gasp*) and it doesn’t have anything explicit, which I know some people prefer, but trust me. The way tora writes these boys is so worth the read. I have the warm-fuzzies just thinking about this fic again - I dare you not to feel like smiling with this one. Naturally, there are grounded feels too, and I just want to protect Clint with my whole being. Luckily, I’m pretty sure Coulson does, too.

Both characterizations are on point.

Keeping the World at Bay Words: 25k+ Rating: E

Finding out that Phil's alive and working with a new team isn't easy for Clint, and neither is helping Captain America track down the brainwashed Hydra assassin that used to be Bucky Barnes.

This is another one where I still don’t ship stucky, but god damnit I’m here for everything in this fic. Clint gets to be fucking amazing in this one, both physically and on an emotional connective-ness level. It uses his own neuroses and backlog of problem/coping mechanisms and puts them to use in the best way. You know, if you’ve seen the movie Age of Ultron (meh movie overall but there are elements I adored) that Clint has the potential to fill the mentor position so well. He gets to do that here, or at least begin down that sort of path, and I loved it.

For all my stony babes, I urge you to give it a shot. Just this once, let me peer pressure you.

I am also always here for Clint getting to be pissed off, because HELLO, he’s got a right. And my heart went out to Phil so hard. Guys, it’s a double reunion fic, as well as the first time potential best friends meet, why are you sleeping on this??

Back to The Place You Are Words: 7k+ Rating: E

Phil Coulson was sitting two tables over from Clint and wearing his Dress Blues. This was making concentrating on anything else pretty much impossible.

Normally, I am Not A Fan of fics where they are broken up from the get-go. Or maybe I just have to be in the right mood/mind set for that brand of angst. AND YET. This fic.

It’s Tony and Pepper’s wedding, and naturally Phil has to dress the part right? Clint should have been prepared, but clearly, he was not. This one is pretty much smut with angst and feels, and like Clint, I was not prepared for how much I would love reading it.

What We've Got Here Is Enough words: 7k+ rating: E

They don’t fuck in the Avengers’ Mansion, that’s rule number one of Having A Secret Relationship With Your Ex-Handler.

Military Man went AWOL on me!

I started dating this guy and we’ve been seeing each other for about 2 months. I’ve felt the most comfortable with him and he feels the same with me. I tell him how I feel exactly and he always appreciates how open I am because he’s never had someone do that with him. And we just really clicked and the energy between us and the strong connection just leaves me speechless. And I was honestly just following his energy and how he expressed himself to me about how much he liked me. But he’s expressed that he wanted to take baby steps because his past relationships have been really crazy. Which I completely understand. And he asked multiple times to help me move out of my apartment back home, and when I finally told him yes, I told him well you’re gonna meet my parents if you help, and he said he figured he would. And then when he brought up that he wants to take baby steps because he rushes into relationships and he ruins everything, I asked him, well you’re meeting my parents, is that okay for you? And he said yes and that if he ever isn’t okay with anything he would let me know, like if he ever needed to slow things down. And he even talked about when we were packing my things up that he wanted me to meet his parents, and I said oh? Excited, of course. And there’s been all these little comments like that, where he shows me that he sees me in his future. and then out of nowhere he goes MIA for a week, not responding to anything. But he deals with PTSD from being in the military and I know he’s had a hard time being back into the civilian world, but when he has his breakdowns that’s never stopped him from coming to me and letting me know what’s going on. The silence started with a photo that was taken of us at a club that I sent him saying how cute we look, and he responded with I like it! And then nothing the rest of the day, with a phone call and a good night text from me. And then the next morning he replies with “goodmorning I’m okay :)” and then I asked him what the hell happened and that I was really concerned. And then nothing for the next three days. And then he texts back saying “I’m so sorry for going ghost on you, I’ve just had a lot to deal with and I let my phone die and left it in my truck for the next three days. I need to get my shit together.” And then I reply with “okay baby just call me whenever you can” and I get no response for another 3 days. And during this time he’s been on Facebook and everything, knowing I’ve been worried about him. .

And chose not to give me any response. And then last night I wrote him angrily because I saw that he was posting on Facebook and it really hurt that he left me in the dark for so long, me thinking the worst has happened, but trying my hardest to give him patience and the space he needed, and to chose not to respond really hurt and made me feel he didn’t care about me at all. So I wrote in this text all of that and that if he ignored me for another day that he would have to stop stringing me along so I can let him go. And he never responded to that either, but again, seen him on Facebook. So I decided to call him around evening today, no answer. So I texted him “okay. I’m coming over.” And as I hit the freeway to get to his house he calls me and he responds with how sorry he is for dragging me through this and how my message scared him and he just ran. He said he’s not ready for a relationship. And I asked him to still go over because I need him to actually talk to me face to face, and he was with his family so he said it wouldn’t be a good idea and he assured me that he wasn’t with another woman cheating on me and I said I know and he said he wouldn’t do that. But if I wanted to talk another time, like tomorrow. And I told him give me a time and place and he did and we’re gonna talk tomorrow about all this.

But I feel like it’s gonna be over and I really don’t want it to be. And I know I will be completely okay if it does end, and I just want him to be happy and okay. Just I have trust issues with trusting that people will stay, and I’ve expressed that to him and he’s given me assurance that he will always be open with me and that he just needs his independence and free time to be by himself. the silence period wasn’t me freaking out about me hanging out with him, it was legit about wondering if he was safe and okay. And I gave him as much time as I could handle. And I think if I just would have left him alone,, maybe there wouldn’t be a big talk tomorrow, but I just really needed to know that he was okay and that we were okay. The way he was talking about how he ran when he saw my message and how he’s just scared of commitment and how he is gonna make time to talk tomorrow made it sound like there’s hope. And I just need advice on what to do and how to approach this tomorrow.

So this is definitely a complicated situation, firstly. And I don’t think there is any easy advice that is going to make anything better. The main crux of my advice is that you really need to sit down and speak to him, and it’s clear that’s what you both are going to do, which is the best step you both can make.

I think, however, that a lot of this is both coming from misinterpretation and misunderstanding on both sides of this scenario. Part of the fault lies with you, and part of the fault lies with him. This is a sort of disagreement that can’t always be avoided; it’s circumstantial and it’s just the way it is. So I want you to most assuredly take away from this whole thing that you just need to remain calm. I know that’s shitty to hear, but it’s the truth. You need to center yourself and remember to always work to try to find a middle-ground, and that because of both of your unique situations, it may be very hard to do that sometimes.

Firstly, let’s point out what you did wrong and get it out of the way. I think the biggest takeaway I get from your reaction to all of this is one of overreaction. I get it, the way that he acted was not exactly wise or acceptable. But you definitely exacerbated a lot of the scenarios, both by feverishly calling, insisting that you were literally racing across town to his house. Furthermore, your actions seem to suggest that you aren’t really treating him like a proper adult. Does he have problems? Sure. But he doesn’t need to be coddled, and his desire to be independent and alone are perfectly valid, especially given his circumstances. If he’s feeling pressured by you, it’s an instinctive thing to want to run away.

Again, there’s nothing inherently wrong with acting this way. But it’s clear that he doesn’t appreciate it. For your perspective, you SHOULD give him a little more space if he needs it. Ask what his limitations are, ask what is best that you should or should not do, and try not to jump to your worst assumptions. You mention having trust issues and anxiety around people leaving you. That’s valid, but you can’t let those drive people away either. You can’t keep people so close that they don’t have a choice but to stay with you. If people ask for a respectful distance, you should respect that. This is not about him being “left alone,” and you don’t need to make these BIG TALK moments to FIX ALL THE THINGS. You can just take things easy and leave them be, and schedule a time for things to get fixed in a reasonable manner without an emotional outburst.

There, that’s that. But what did HE do wrong? Because as said, he is also guilty in this mess.

His biggest issue comes from miscommunication. It’s clear although that he may have mentioned that he needs time like this, his sudden and extreme silence out of nowhere like this - the very sudden reaction that he had to you - is not exactly acceptable behaviour. From his perspective, he needs to communicate these moments better to you so as not to set off your anxiety. Again, it’s valid that he has a troubled past due to his military service, but that doesn’t excuse skipping out on your significant other when they really need to communicate with you.

When you speak to him, you need to really ask him what set him off in this situation, and what other signs and symptoms of his reactions you should be on the look-out for. Another useful thing is, tell him that if he ever has a reaction like this again, he needs to do more than say “hi i’m okay.” He really needs to express, in full detail what happened, why he freaked out, and what caused it. Furthermore, if he needs time and space, he really needs to figure out a better way of expressing how much time, and how much space he needs. I know that may be inconvenient for his condition, but it’s also a common courtesy that anyone can extend, despite that inconvenience.

Hopefully your talk goes well and a lot of this is communicated outright. If not, sit back down or text it out, and try to get all these situations dealt with, and apologize for any mistakes you may have made along the way.
