just burbling about the new screenshots from this Twitter thread from a few days ago :) -
Tumblr media
I like how they are showcasing different Rooks in the promotional and marketing material (lineages, classes, ethnicities etc). ^^ it shows the wide variety of Rooks we can make in CC. this human dude Rook is the one in the release date reveal trailer. look at the eyebrow game! :D and if you compare his facial hair to DA:I and stuff, it's come a long way just like the hair-hair. looks great! the pattern at Rook's collar is a pair of wings. I wonder if this Rook is a Warden, and they represent griffon wings, or being that a rook is a bird, this motif is a more general Rook thing?
the design of the armor Rook is wearing here (bandolier of pouches, the shoulder pieces, curved lines on the breastplate etc) reminds me of the 'iconic' armor Rook wears in the key art, just sans helmet and with hood down, in a blue tone instead of purple, and without the Veilguard symbol on the breastplate. I wonder if this scene is from somewhere in the early game, when the companions are probably at that point just Neve and Harding? maybe it's like, before they get a Veilguard symbol, they first need to, well, form Voltron the Veilguard in the first place, and recruit the rest of the companions etc.
the background is the shifting surface of an eluvian, either about to be used or having just been used (cool visual effect btw). the curving gold architecture of the buildings that can be seen in the other location through the eluvian there is ancient elven, so Rook must have just come from (or be about to go to) somewhere which has those style of buildings. maybe Arlathan Forest, maybe Solas' Ritual site in the Forest, etc.
Tumblr media
elf lady Warrior Rook and Davrin. again great eyebrow game. :D she is so pretty. she also has the wing motif at her collar. again her armor looks like the key art one. hers is in a purple tone rather than blue like the Rook above though - is this due a dyeing system? ^^ this one has the Veilguard logo on it, so maybe this shot is from a bit later in the game after the Veilguard has been brought together? a few details of the armor are also different compared to above, like buttons. I wonder if this is due to rogue version of the armor vs warrior version, armor customization, or armor upgrade.
Davrin is so ears. I love elves with big ears like this. :D 2 elf warriors yeyyy
wherever they are in this scene, it looks to be inside somewhere.
Tumblr media
Davrin looks amazing! the design of his vallaslin reminds me a bit of the Ghilan'nain vallaslin design from DA:I. there are some neat thoughts on the design of Davrin's armor here. :>
Tumblr media
the detailing and texturing etc on Neve's clothes in this shot is craaazy (as in crazy good). even the netting on her hat/fascinator has a lil pattern in it. Tevene snakey scales, the folds of the fabric, raindrops on her clothes, the fact that the snake pattern on her hat is three dimensional..
Davrin and Neve - some of our companions love huge cool collars :D
also, just like her saunter, Neve's half-smile/smirk (dimple.. 🥺) here has me weak in the knees.
location: looks like some kind of ruin maybe? ^^
Tumblr media
I wanna believe that our dragon hunter Taash is looking up here into the sky at.. a dragon :D I loved getting to see this detailed close up of her dragonscale shoulderpieces and her jewelry etc. in this shot we can see that her gold-plated horn has spiky triangle bits on it and more detailing on the faces carved on her horn cuffs and the dragon piece at her neck. also I'm not sure if it's just the angle in this particular shot, but her brow looks strong, which I love and think makes sense when big horns grow from your head. :>

The Path to Hell is paved with good intentions
I think what is interesting is the drive that is the Autobots and Decpeticons. Mostly the cause of the Decpeticons and Megatron himself.
Alot of the time we see Megatron to be a crazy, battle hungry, warlord whos hel bent of causing destruction, conquering all in his path and who cares only about his goal to rule.
Over the years we have seen many version of Megatron. From silly goofy villain who's somtiems could acutally be a threat like in g1, to pash, cold, cunning like TFA, to being a crazy war lord who is incredibly cruel in TFP.
But these versions are mostly a Megatron who came from fighting, or had no good intentions to begin with besides being selfish or power hungry.
Then you have TFE and IDW/IDW2 (and possibly tf one). A different apprich to a character. Some may say its to make someone who has done cruel things as more sympathetic. But I think adds depth and personality.
Giving more than a crazy leader with silly goons, to a person who genuinely thought at the beginning, "I want things to change, for the better ,because it is broken"
Much howOptimus, the humble data clerk (hate he is a cop in idw tbh) and the hard working miner. Your everyday ppl, going through diffenrt struggles and honestly. I think woukd be fair to say that Orion wouldn't know the struggles of lower level bots that don't even have proper names..
Like D-16. The mech whis become Megatron.
Both Optimus and Megatron i think wnates to see a change , but how they both went about it i what added the conflict.
These two are basically your average everyday people. Megatron was an average everyday person. He wasn't born into the pits, net a warrior. A worker.
I think with alot of cartoon "villains" to we get older and started to see from a adult perspective. "Oh wait they are making sense." And how MESSED up the situation even was to drive these characters to this point.
Its no longer good vs evil, it is two ideals fighting aginst each other. What was once a fight for what these two sides believes in, turned into warfare and blood shed. To the mentality of Megatron being
"I can't trust anyone to right thing, besides me. I am the only one who can fix this, I can lead us."
You know what I could also see Optimus having the SAME mentality when comes to fighting megatron and restoring Cybertron. They are very much two sides of the same coin. I think that's what adds to the conflict between them. Optimus could be one bad day away from becoming Megatron onnthe sense of wanting to control the situation despite what costs just to not se Megatron when.
And you know he HAS done this. Yeeting the allspark for one to not let Megatron have ir but at the cost of Cybteron and its occupance. It was a loose loose situation regardless.
When it comes to alt-modist mentality, this high class vs low class, and the corruption of Cybertron. It is no wonder why so many people believes in the Decpeticon causes.
The reason why I clung so hard to Transformers Earthspark Megatron is because this was a break out from his character. To later learn it definitely took inspo from IDW who explored this character further sealed my admiration for him.
No one in the tf universe is less or more guilty. Both sides have done HORRIBLE things. Experimentation, brutality, killing innocence and their own soldiers just to get the won up. The autobots are not without their own blood shed. Only SOME of the autobots have a bit more regard for life and the planet they sit on. It doenst mean all of them do, and it doenst mean people within the groups around Optimus like it. But because they are painted as good guys we exapect them to.
Its when Decpeticons seem to take an interest in life do I find it way more compelling because it is out of their characteristics. They are the "bad guys"
Knockout being interested in Human cinema
Thundercracker being into writing and making movies
They are still PEOPLE. With interests and hobbies, internal conflicts and hesitations.
To see a Megatron not only fight aginst his own army , but take a human, a HUMAN as a friend that he TRUSTS?! That he gave up his Cybertronian already mode UP FOR?! Thats a bug FUCKING deal.
Just the contrast to TFW Megs to say TFP. Tfp depsite it beingbbetter for camouflage NEVER changes his alt mode. He is never willing to acutally change, he is so deeply rooted in what he is, who he is. What he is doing. That he is unwilling to change to the surroundings. No the surrounding will change BECAUSE of him.
While TFE realized a change was needed to fix things, to work together, to show I AM CHANGING, I WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
This is not a Slander Optimus rant or a WOW Megatron is such a great guy essay.
Was mostly me rambling.

Sorry, I'm a fucking idiot but what's Shadowsight's relationship with the Dakr Forest Peeps??? Somehow Don't know how to search properly 😭😭😭
OH dw djrhddj it's kind of an inside joke that just sorta happened based on this one scene
Here, I am handing you a bouquet of WIP material.
PREVIOUS CONTEXT:
In BB, Bristlefrost dies VERY early on. She is executed publically by the Impostor. She is a ghost for most of TBC.
Shadowsight has epilepsy, and since his birth in Heartstar's Rise, has had a really bad relationship with death and the idea of needing to "make his life worth it."
He's struck by lightning in early TBC, giving him a glowing blue scar that lights up his ear like radio antennae. This is a "gift" from Ashfur, essentially making Shadowsight a prophet-level interpreter. VERY powerful gift.
All Dark Forest residents manifest a "Land Mar" in the forest. An evil magic place based on the worst moment of their lives. If you live here long enough that it becomes home, you get one.
Anyway, cut ahead to the wip in question where the joke comes from;
Confronting the Impostor in the Dark Forest
Like canon, it is decided that Ashfur needs to be dealt with. He's escaped into the Dark Forest and it's not known what's happened with StarClan.
They just know that Ashfur is FREAKISHLY powerful and it's not known why. StarClan warriors can do many wonderful things, but possession? Calling down a lightning bolt to make a blessing?
The Clans are more concerned about StarClan than the dark forest though, and not super willing to stick their necks out to fight for... Hell. Or the soul of Bramblestar.
But Squirrelflight, in spite of EVERYTHING, argues passionately that they NEED to save her ex-mate. No man left behind means him too.
But I'm not sure if I'm going to have Shadowsight leave and re-enter the DF this time around, to go fetch these reinforcements, because I have a better idea.
So INSTEAD of escaping as Rootspring gets captured, Shadowsight also gets trapped. He's able to avoid capture, but injured, and not knowing how he's going to save everyone without reinforcements.
He manages to drag himself away where he finds a cave. It's the land mar of Ravenwing, the unfairly damned Cleric of ThunderClan... and he intentionally never seeks visitors. He has no idea what's going on out there with Ashfur. Man literally lives under a rock.
But Shadowsight is a young lad and he's injured. He needs help, so, he brings him deep into his cave to patch him up. That's where they have a little chat.
It's about expectations. What people want from you, vs the right thing to do. Ravenwing interpreted a sign from StarClan incorrectly, and three children died because of him. He thought he was doing what they wanted... but even if they did, it was an AWFUL thing to want.
And so he regrets it deeply. Even if it WAS their will, he should have had the spine to stand against it.
And then the subject turns around to Ashfur, Shadowsight sharing how he listened to him because he was a StarClan warrior, even against his instincts, how he feels responsible for this mess.
And yet.. how good it felt. How terrified he is that even if he beats him, he'll go back to living without him. Ashfur makes him special, this GIFT makes him special.
And how will anyone ever forgive him? So many people are dead because of him. Cousin Strikestone is dead because of him. All he ever wanted to do was be useful, but now his life is a net negative.
I plan to trim this down to be shorter and more "focused," but I do want to try and set up Shadowsight's feelings before the Final Battle in some other way.
Anyway, Ravenwing reveals that the Special Power of his Land Mar is that HE can send omens from the comfort of his own cave, very easily. With the power of his Land Mar and the Gift that Shadowsight still has, they're able to send a message to the Mortal Plane.
"STUCK IN DARK FOREST ASHFUR BAD SEND HELP"
I think it'll work better than the several chapters of arguing canon gave us, widely considered to be super frustrating. Just let Shadowsight see the "best hits" from Ravenwing's cave, like Squirrelflight’s Speech.
If I don't use the Land Mar idea, then Rootspring will break out of jail with the help of Hawkfrost's half-ghost and go get help.
Anyway. The joke
Shadowsight keeps getting put in the path of demons who aren't evil and angels who aren't good
So based on the Ravenwing Scene (which I've mentioned before but without much detail iirc) it just became a joke that people like talking to Shadowsight lmao
He'll take 2 steps and a new demon is like "oh i need to protect this boy"
Or suddenly traumadump on him
Or both

one of the most popular interpretations of blame! that ive seen everywhere online is that its a cautionary tale about the dangers of ai. while it isnt a bad interpretation per se, its a little basic and not really representative of the reality of blame! and its setting. too often scifi and especially dystopian/horror scifi is shoved into the 'ai bad' box and it's true that a lot of scifi is just really bad and leans way too much into this trope, so it's sad that thats the direction a lot of people's minds go when interacting with blame!, because thats what they expect from the scifi dystopian horror manga, but the world of blame! isnt that way because of unchecked ai. in a much more realistic way, the world is the way it is because of a combination of factors (corporations deciding which people deserved to live and be considered human and which didn't; a mysterious epidemic that affected all of humanity regardless of said corporations' idea of 'human'; a post-human species thrust into existence against their will and forced to adopt a warrior culture out of survival; plus god knows what else). unchecked ai isn't so much the cause of the chaos as it is its symptom. it's a byproduct. humans made it so that only a certain category of people deserved to live, programming the ai to exterminate everyone else and when the epidemic caused that category to lose its privileged status, then they lost control of the ai. saying that the ultimate message of blame! is 'beware bad ai' is not only shallow but also incredibly reductive, yet it is one of the most universally accepted takes. the issue in the world blame! isn't unchecked ai, it's having to deal with unchecked ai as a consequence of human error (bad programming), classism (net terminal gene ((which find a very obvious parallel to the real life passport privilege/documented citizens vs alien citizens)) + net criminals + post-human cultists) and chance (disease)

Dragon Age: Veilguard | Skill Trees, RPG Systems, Classes
▪️Player cap at Level 50
▪️Confirmed: Bellara is a mage
▪️Base management returns (called "The Lighthouse" here)
▪️Game Director: "Incredibly deep" RPG progression, "if I were to contrast Mass Effect vs Dragon Age, for instance, I really view Mass Effect as an ARPG. Big action, minor RPG. We're almost the total inverse of that"
▪️"Enormous" skill tree web that is bespoke for each class
▪️Skill tree web is a bit similar to FFX's Sphere Grid, players start in the center of it, and work outwards towards specializations they want
▪️Example: Warriors can pump skill points into something more defense oriented, weapons oriented or abilities
▪️Warrior Specializations: Reaper (can lifesteal, "freaky" powers), Slayer ("wield the biggest blades"), Champion (tank)
▪️The origin you select at the start can net you bonuses like extra dialogue options or stat boosts (ex: Shadow Dragons deal extra damage to Venatori blood cultists)
▪️Skills are unique per class, every level nets a skill point + other activities to get points
▪️Where other RPGs might see players invest all their skill points to reach a specialization, the team wanted players here to reach specializations about mid-game, and "then you can really branch out"
▪️Each companion has 5 core abilities, each with their own skill trees that players can customize (lower cooldowns, add additional effects, etc)
▪️Elemental mechanics are very important (ice, fire, electricity, etc)
▪️Each companion also has unique abilities that are tied specifically to them (Neve has ice powers, for example)

Jebalat
Tumblr media
“Huy bez laykov” © Vladimir Matyukhin, accessed at his ArtStation here
[Jebalat was a recurring NPC in my Rise of the Runelords game. One of my players was playing a hellspawn, which was a tiefling-like playable race from Fiendish Codex 2, which were pledged to hell at an early age instead of being born with fiendish blood. I really like that as a tiefling origin, and that’s been a canon way to do it in my games ever since. That character, Evangeline, will be posted in the near future as an NPC, as will a more recent character of mine who is another one of his clients. Stay tuned.]
Jebelat CR 13 LE Outsider (extraplanar) This humanoid figure is intimidating, with gray skin covered in scales and a crown of horns like a sinister halo. His facial expression is calm in a condescending way.
Jebelat has been in the soul trade for a long time. He considers himself to be one of the finest case managers in the courts of Nessus. His specialty is escrow contracts; he has some noble dupe sign away their child’s soul in order to have the child transformed into a tiefling, to be put to work as a high status slave, or just as a trophy of infernal influence. The legal grasp on the child’s soul is somewhat tenuous, as the baby cannot sign of their own free will, but such a cruel contract damns the soul of the parent regardless of any specific legalese. The baby then is coached as they grow up, encouraging them towards law and evil, and in most cases, signing their own contract when they reach an age of majority and their own ambitions have been stoked.
Of course, not all of these cases work out. Pesky free will and all that; Asmodeus’ perennial obstacle. The most prominent contract Jebelat lost was of a promising warrior named Evangeline. Although Evangeline was strong enough to resist Jebalat’s back and forth of wheedling and threats, she did die under her parent’s contract. Twice. Jebalat was able to obtain the services of the orcitimor Melamas to kill Evangeline the second time when she was resurrected by her allies. But in so doing, pushed his luck too far, and ended up losing any right to Evangeline’s soul when defeated in a fiddle contest overseen by angels of Saerenrae. A lesser devil may have ended up demoted or at least tortured for that failure, but Jebalat was able to successfully argue that, because of how many souls Evangeline sent to Hell by killing neutral evil targets, who then opted for the surety of the Pit rather than the nihilism of Abaddon, that it was a net win for the forces of Hell.
Jebalat is a mesmerist of some skill, but true to his nature as a phistophilus, prefers to entice or trick rather than force the hand of a client. Long term emotional manipulation, gaslighting and inducing the dread of uncertainty are his favorite tactics, and he has the rehearsed pace and controlled tone of an expert cult leader. He would much rather not engage in physical violence, as his body has literally been sculpted to minimize his natural weapons in exchange for being able to better move in mortal circles. Still, he is an excellent spellcaster, and his curses and the nightmares they induce are legendary, even in Hell.

Wounds created by a binding contract resemble horrifically deep paper cuts and cause 1d6 points of bleed damage. A contract devil can use its binding contract to disarm and trip foes as if the contract were a whip. If it is itself disarmed of the contract, the devil can rearm itself with a new contract as an immediate action. Infernal Contract (Su) As a full-round action, a contract devil can produce an infernal contract for a single living mortal creature. This contract can grant a wide range of abilities and effects, as detailed on the following page. To receive any of these bonuses, however, the mortal must sign its true name to the document of its own free will. Upon doing so, that mortal's soul is sworn to the contract devil, condemning the soul to an eternity of servitude in Hell rather than whatever fate would naturally befall it upon the mortal's death. Breaking a contract with a contract devil is difficult and dangerous (see the next page); as long as the infernal contract remains in effect, the victim cannot be restored to life after death save by a miracle or a wish. If a mortal is restored to life in this way, the contract devil immediately senses the development—it not only knows which soul has been restored to life, but also gains the benefits of a discern location spell targeted on the character or creature that restored the damned soul to life. Infernal Investment (Su) As a subclause of all infernal contracts, a contract devil can use greater scrying at will upon any creature it has a contract with. The target creature always fails its save against the devil's scrying attempt—this ability otherwise functions at caster level 20th. Undercover Agent (Ex) Jebalat does not have a gore attack or the impale special attack, but does gain a +4 racial bonus on any Disguise checks to appear as a tiefling, and has nondetection as a constant spell-like ability.

Wolverine vs. the Black Clan is a really great fight on the Black Clan's part but again Yukio doesn't get to look cool. Not even in a big fight with a bunch of disposable goons where there's plenty to go around.
Tumblr media
This fight pits Wolverine against an army of cultural stereotyp-- I mean badass motorcycle ninjas. You know they're ninjas because they run around out in the open dressed in stagehand costumes and engage their opponents in direct combat up-front.
These guys actually do have a pretty good understanding of how to fight an opponent like Wolverine, though. Since they can't kill him, they aim to incapacitate, and it's pretty effective.
Tumblr media
They tangle him in a net and drag him around by their motorcycles. This works for a while but unfortunately he has knives on his hands so that sort of strategy had a limited time it was going to work for.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Yukio seizes upon another opportunity to get in on the action.
Tumblr media
Which she does by. Uh. Driving a truck really ferociously.
Tumblr media
To be fair, it's not just a slow-moving vehicle. It's a mobile Arena Hazard that Logan can toss dudes into.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's driving the Stage Fatality. So that's actually pretty cool. Until she accidentally defeats herself by turning too hard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
KO!
No, I jest. She's not actually knocked out, but the truck is vanquished. Wolverine warns her to get the fuck out before he uses it for one last Stage Fatality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, she decides to get a closer look at the explosion like a useless fucking chode and gets knocked out by friendly fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jesus Fucking Christ, they really cannot let her have anything in this movie.
As for Wolverine, the ninjas finally remember that they're ninjas and decide to take Logan down through underhanded tactics and subterfuge. 'Cause. You know. They're assassins, not warriors.
Tumblr media
Binding Wolverine with rope arrows shot into his back is a really cool way to take him down and I like it a lot.
And also poison. Harada finally caves and uses poison.
Tumblr media
He hadn't been doing that before because he, the ninja master, scoffed at the use of poison to defeat an enemy earlier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think Harada is very good at being a ninja. But at least he got there in the end.
Tumblr media
Winner: The Black Clan, once they stopped dicking around and remembered how to ninja.

w/ that cute matching armour set ask i’m now imagining full primed odin holding tiny matching armoured spouse in his giant ass hand and they’re all like :) fear me :) warrior of waloed :) [said spouse is 3 apples tall compared to odin]
I had to go back and watch the bahamut vs Odin fight for scale and oh my god…a normal human doesn’t even come close to HALF of a hoof on Sleipnir, they wouldn’t even be able to hear the poor readers they’d just be wondering what the fuck is that tiny dot is that’s jumping on Odin’s hand. Besides that I think it’s very adorable if Barnabas did his thing and let his armies clean up the mess while the two of you goof around while he’s still primed, maybe he lets you try to climb him or lets you dangle from his fingers (with his hand VERY close by as a safety net, no way in hell he’s going to let you fall.)

B/S versus W/J paralleling anon again!
Sorry for the lack of line breaks last time. My worst vice is forgetting the return key exists. 😵‍💫 I appreciate the thoughtful response in any case!
And. Since you asked. (TL;DR It’s towers all the way down, to me. Also I have zero of the fandom-standard villain->hero / enemies-to-lovers hangups because I like when characters undergo foundational change.)
I don’t feel like I needed to be convinced, honestly? Except insofar as the narrative had to set the pieces up that way. Coming to the story fairly late (after V8 wrapped, so I watched all of that in one go) and being insulated from the people who are… weird… about Jaune probably helped rhghjk
My interest in RWBY is very thematically oriented—I actually wouldn’t quibble at all that the romantic arcs are key thematic centerpieces, I think that’s absolutely true. I’m just not very romantically inclined myself, in general, so fictional romance isn’t something I get the giddy, like, dollies kissing! kind of excited for normally. The flip side of that is as long as it’s narratively compelling and the characters are interesting I’m a pretty easy sell as far as willingness to believe a romantic arc.
What *grips* me in a story is like, emotional paradigm shifts, dynamic self-image—especially in relation to family identity and definition of the self apart from one’s family. V9 has been VERY FUN for me, lol.
So my focus, with RWBY, tilts more toward the breaking and healing of parent-child bonds, whether personal (Summer + Ruby) or narrative (creators + creations). I tend to read the romantic arcs in that context. I guess a succinct way to put it would be to say I’m thinking about Ozlem in terms of Salem’s eternal exile being a second tower Ozma has been unhappily conscripted into guarding? And the point of the story ultimately is to Get Her Out Of The Tower But For Real This Time, and in the same stroke save him from being her warden.
What twigged me to Jaune/Cinder is the fractal repetition of their family situations. He has this family legacy he feels quite burdened by and feels compelled to uphold it (imitate it) even as it runs contrary to his actual self—he is not a warrior—meanwhile Cinder has only ever known family as a means of control and intends to escape the control by emulating the means.
Then they’re connected by her killing of Pyrrha, who drew out the Arc stuff in the first place and facilitated his emulation of his forefathers by training him. Then Jaune vs Cinder in V5 foreshadows the Ozlem fight in V6 and suggests the shape of that connection. & Jaune has this baked-in empathy for the feeling of being in a tower (stuck in a tree, funny how that’s coming full circle right as he confronts the brittleness of his simulated heroism). It does rather announce itself.
What grips me in a story is like, emotional paradigm shifts, dynamic self-image
See, because what's interesting to me in this case is that this is exactly what I'd describe romance as, and I prefer it over genetic family relations because it's something which exists outside a given scenario you're born into. This is the Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre type shit for me. And no net ensares me. This is totally paradigm-shift type stuff because it's outside everything you thought you knew.
So basically you're saying you identified Jaune/Cinder like, on your own terms, and then you found my blog? Am I gathering that correctly? Because if so, first of all, well fucking done (not trying to gas myself up here, just most people who send asks on the matter have done so because they found my blog or my fanfic pre-Knightfall). Second of all, that's crazy, because you've approached it on your own terms, and third of all, I'm so interested to hear from someone not inoculated in the fandom. I've been in the trenches since Volume 1, so the show has really transformed for me over time.
I personally didn't twig Jaune/Cinder until the end of V7, when I was near-certain Cinder's redemption arc was set-up and the story was taking her character seriously. I had speculated upon it since the end of V3/beginning of V4, but never seriously considered it to be that emotionally sincere and thoughtful lol. As you say, the fandom was and is pretty inhospitable. Frankly you're probably lucky you missed out on it, but more importantly, I'm fascinated with your experience because you clearly have a textual grip on the matter.
I think what you're describing here about intergenerational inheritance is thematically critical to the story, but I think what's forgotten in a lot of fandom spaces is that romance is a building block of family too. People get married and have babies. Ozlem got married and had babies. Obviously I care about the marriage and babies bit, but it's not like a stork dropped Ruby out of the sky (and to be honest, I want to know what's up with the team STRQ love affairs). So I suppose I'm sort of like, curious about the false binary on the matter (and I'm for a model of romance which is like... reciprocal, unconditional, non-transactional and not forced, obviously). I do agree though, I'm a huge fan of the V9 development with Ruby in particular - I might be coming at it with a slightly different angle from you, in that Ruby's awakening to spiritual aridity (and basically outright confirmation this is her Heroine's Journey) is something I personally oscillate with, and the false image of her mother is one she actually needs to break. If we get Jungian here, Summer as Ruby's persona is very potent to me, especially if Grimm!Summer Rose theory proves true. (Your mummy comes back in the worst way possible, the truth of the situation is really painful as the illusion is broken, but that is the only way to grow up).
I think what you've outlined here with Jaune and Cinder's family backgrounds is influential to the pairing, but it's not all of it in my opinion, but it is interesting that it motivated your interest - I can definitely see what are the things you find valuable in storytelling influencing your interpretation here. I think what you've described with Jaune here is my exact issue with Jaune/Weiss, though. In the past I described what my issue is with a potential Weiss love interest; frankly the boy is simply not a good arranged match and is unmarriageable to another great house. The last thing his character needs is to join a different family weighted legacy. So in this way, I think Jaune and Cinder 'meet in the middle' on this matter, as they do with everything else. If the ideas here are intentional, it's actually quite clever. Because in this sense, Cinder needs to get out from her magical evil stepmother/godmother's thumb, and so does Jaune, and they need to get married and have babies.
I know what you mean though; I do think there is a difference between you and I in the sense that I can readily write tens of thousands of words about Jaune and Cinder falling in love with each other, which is a genuinely different experience from wanting to see Ruby's relationship with her mother evolve. But by the same stroke, I enjoy all that stuff too, especially in unusual places like with Raven (the Mother of the triple goddess cycle) in respect to Cinder (a well and proper Maiden) and Qrow and Winter. Anyway, I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, because really, you're fluffing up my ego with this 'I don't ship it but I see it' business.
I don't mean to sound weird but you said 'it's towers all the way down'; I tagged a Reverse Ozlem post this like, a year or so ago. So that's some interesting memetic repetition. (I'm not saying you're copying/referencing me, I mean this in a sort of vaguely mystical way lolololol). Because yes, I do feel the Ozlem story is basically fundamental to understanding the reincarnating/repeating pattern of the show, and this is even true outside of Jaune/Cinder itself and to do with the other canon romances. I really like how you've described the Ozlem relationship here, actually; I feel like you get it.
So that is... very interesting to me. My goodness. Very enlightening indeed.
Then they’re connected by her killing of Pyrrha, who drew out the Arc stuff in the first place and facilitated his emulation of his forefathers by training him.
Yes, yes that's exactly it. That's why Pyrrha is another persona (false self), and this is especially why the sequence of Penny -> Pyrrha -> Weiss all hurting him just in this past episode is puzzling me. These are all false images, attached to a false sense of who he is, which are assaulting him. Cinder killing Pyrrha symbolically frees Jaune of this weight but it's deeply and profoundly painful (and on a broader scale, the death of Pyrrha is the death of innocence and childhood, and then you've got the fact it makes the Fall of Beacon personal to one character who's meant to have a major connection to Cinder?). But then she forces him to kill Penny, which is even further brutal development, and now he's retreated to Weiss, which again he is dispelled away from.
The problem is that I want to analyse this on terms of character development and narrative consequences, but you can't really get past 'but she's evil for killing Pyrrha :( Jaune should kill Cinder :(', and it makes the matter rather boring. So I really enjoy the opportunity of getting to interact with someone who fuckinggggg getsssss it and I don't have to censor myself speaking about the narrative. Again: I've been in this fandom on and off for too long and I've seen it all. As bad as you think it was, imagine worse. Most of the fandom has been filled with 'Pyrrha is Jaune's tragic lost love and they should be together forever and ever' for years and years, if not 'Weiss is the replacement goldfish/Ruby is the replacement goldfish/something something', and so say, with the appearance of Pyrrha this volume my stomach's in the floor because eventually you start to wonder if the chorus is right.
But on textual terms that he is literally harmed by false images is pretty on the nose.
Regarding the V5/V6 Ozlem parallel, yeah that is the clincher for me personally with the ship. Reverse Ozlem itself is what I think to be the motivating factor (here's a recent post I made about the potential in which it can evolve as), so I'm glad you picked up on that bit too because as much as I care about all the other influences (see: my masterpost) I only take those as seriously as I do because of the Ozlem matter. Like, you know, Rhodopis (proto-Cinderella) marrying Sappho's (Sapphron's) brother. That one is so fucking weird, I really can't believe it.
I appreciate this follow-up a lot, it's really fascinating for me to hear your thoughts and I think you have a lot of interesting things to say. Really, a true joy. Also, thank you for the paragraph breaks, that really saved me and I appreciate it a lot. <3 I hope you have a good one, and please stop by again.

Universal Cross Wrestling (Year 1, Month 1)
In a distant time and a distant place, a deal is struck out between that of the WWE, the realm of Newgrounds, and the Eorzean Alliance to conjure up a one-night wrestling event featuring some of the most iconic and well-known names from all three respective brands. Though it runs under the branding of a normal Survivor Series pay-per-view, it is pitched as a 3-way dance between WWE, Newgrounds, and Final Fantasy XIV live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. What comes of this night? Only time will tell…
WWE Vs. Newgrounds Vs. FFXIV
Survivor Series
To open the show with a rather David Vs. Goliath-esque match-up, Tricky the Clown is set to face G'raha Tia in a normal one on one contest. The match lasts for around 10 minutes, and despite Graha's best efforts to keep up with the mad clown, Tricky defeats the Miqo'te in a convincing fashion to net Newgrounds their first point of the pay-per-view.
The second contest of the night is an intergender tag-team match that pits Boyfriend and Girlfriend against Montez Ford and Bianca Belair. Though both teams show much promise within the ring--courtesy of all four's shared high-flying prowess--Montez and Bianca come out on top to earn the WWE their first point of hopefully many.
In the third match of the night, Ardbert, representing Final Fantasy XIV, faces off against a returning Daniel Bryan who represents the WWE in a close-quarters brawl full of stiff strikes and excellent mat wrestling. The match concludes with Ardbert using his strength to overpower Bryan and pick up the win by pinfall, scoring FFXIV their first point.
The pay-per-view's fourth match sees one of WWE's best tag teams take on Newgrounds's most recognizable duo; Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish of reDRagon versus Sanford and Deimos of Madness Combat. In this match, the clashing styles of high-octane, mat-based wrestling of the Undisputed Era and the aggressive, heavy hitting fighting style of Sanford and Deimos go hand in hand in a 15-minute long classic which sees the Nevadan locals come out on top against reDRagon.
The fifth match of the night is the pinnacle of hoss wrestling with Raubahn Aldynn going against Brock Lesnar in a no holds barred match. The two are caught fighting before the match even begins, and from then on it escalates into a state of violence more fit for an octagon than a ring. By the sliver of a chance that his own will will allow him to keep pushing onward, Raubahn defeats Brock Lesnar in the closest match of the night and with his hand held high.
The flagship match of the show comes underway as Team WWE (Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, Finn Balor) Team FFXIV (Thancred, Y'shtola, Papalymo) and Team Newgrounds (Pico, Nene, Darnell) all face off in a 3V3V3 Traditional Survivor Series match that pits all three brands against each other for the first time that night. Elimination after elimination is doled out between teams until it comes down to Finn Balor and Nene in the climax of the 30 minute war, ending with Balor picking up the victory for Team WWE and being the sole survivor of the entire match.
As the WWE, Newgrounds and FFXIV brands are all tied for 2 points each, the main event of the night comes as John Cena, Hank J. Wimbleton, and the Warrior of Light all clash in a triple threat match to determine which brand will reign supreme at night's end. A match that lasts for upwards to a half hour, not any of the three men have what it takes to put each other away for the victory.
That is, until a blindsiding superkick knocks Cena off balance enough to give Hank the opportunity to pick up the win, securing Newgrounds as the victors of the night and prompting a celebration. That superkick that gifted Hank and the rest of Newgrounds that victory, however, was not the result of the Warrior of Light or by Hank himself, but from an outside party with an agenda of their own;
a blue haired, brown cloaked girl who is soon revealed to be Sky.
Final Score:
WWE: 2
NG: 3
FFXIV: 2
------------------------------
With the success of Survivor Series prompting demand for even more action from the three brands, a joint company is created between them known as Universal Cross Wrestling (UCW) to give its newly acquitted fans just that. With Triple H and William Regal at the helm as the brands General Managers, UCW kicks itself into high gear with its first month of programming taking place in Canada. Hank is crowned as the flagship star of UCW and is given the UCW World Heavyweight Championship to commemorate that; soon being told that a challenger for his title will be decided in the coming weeks.
This challenger will be fished from a set of 2 fatal-4 way matches, each of which will consist of the following superstars: Daniel Bryan, G'raha Tia, Finn Balor, and John Cena in the first match, alongside Nene, Ardbert, Tricky, and Raubahn in the second match. The winners of both of those fatal-4 ways will meet in a one-on-one contest, and the winner of that match will face Hank for the UCW Championship at UCW'S first official pay-per-view, Starrcade.
As a requisite reward for their victories at Survivor Series, Montez Ford and his fellow street profit tag team partner Angelo Dawkins are pitted against Sanford and Deimos to crown UCW's first ever Tag Team Champions. In a brutal and fast-paced clinic of a match, Wasteland Blood pick up the victory and secure the Tag Team titles for themselves, but not without shaking the hands of the Street Profits and showing them their due respect.
Bianca Belair and Girlfriend face each other one-on-one to crown UCW's first Women's Champion, and in a 20 minute clash full of emotion and hardship, Bianca is able to take home the gold and cement herself as champion.
The first of the two announced Fatal-4 ways takes place as Daniel Bryan, G'raha Tia, Finn Balor, and John Cena all square off against each other for the opportunity of a lifetime at the very beginning of UCW's life. In this nearly 40 minute slugfest of a match, Finn Balor is the one who's able to pick up the victory and awaits his opponent in the coming weeks.
------ Mid-Month Break ------
During an interview with Ardbert of the Warriors of Darkness, he claims that his victory against Daniel Bryan at Survivor Series was only the beginning of his path to glory, and promises to represent both the First and his friends on his quest to reach the top of UCW and become World Heavyweight Champion. During this interview however, he is confronted by Roman Reigns, who doesn't even give him the time of day with words and only stares daggers into the eyes of the axe-wielding hero.
William Regal is given the opportunity as General Manager to select two superstars for a match to crown UCW's first ever Openweight Champion. With longevity and spectacle being his main priority for such an occasion, he calls upon the likes of Karrion Kross and Sami Zayn to battle for the belt.
This results in a 15 minute David Vs. Goliath contest with a hopeful Sami coming up short against the monstrous Kross, crowing the new champion and inserting him into the titles caveat; once every week, Karrion Kross must defend the Openweight Championship in an open challenge to the entire roster. There are no limitations to who can challenge for or hold the belt no matter who they are, and Kross plans to run a warpath through UCW no matter who decides to step to him.
Finn Balor's opponent for the final show before Starrcade is decided as Nene, Ardbert, Tricky, and Raubahn all face off for the opportunity of a lifetime in one of the month's many main events. Despite a very divisive mixture of styles in terms of wrestling and fighting prowess, a 20 minute classic comes out of this fatal-4 way as Nene is able to pick up the victory and secure her match against Finn Balor. As she celebrates however, Sky emerges from the rafters above and gives the knife-crazy contender an unnoticed glare. Roman Reigns can also be seen sitting in the crowd during the match, studying Ardbert with a disappointed expression.
On the go-home show before Starrcade, the entire UCW roster is called to the ring as both GM's appoint them to a bright, prosperous future for the promotion. With two championships still undecided, however--that of the Undisputed and Submission titles--Triple H makes the decision to call upon those who he feels would be the best fit to face off for those prestigious prizes. For the Undisputed Championship, he chooses AJ Styles and Kevin Owens.
For the Submission Championship, he chooses Pete Dunne and Cesaro. Regal announces after his choices are made that the first match of a Tag Team Championship tournament will be held at Starrcade, pitting that of Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory of The Way up against Wes Lee and Nash Carter of MSK to end the segment.
Roman Reigns is scheduled to have a match against Dolph Ziggler later in the show, but is stopped by Ardbert who questions him on his intentions as per the stare he gave him during Ardbert's interview and fatal-4 way match. Roman explains that, per his own experience, he knows a leader when he sees one, and claims that someone like Ardbert who has to rely on other people to carry his baggage and can't get the job done when it counts isn't fit for the role of a leader.
Ardbert takes this claim as fighting words, and denounces Roman's point with a mentioning of the Shield falling apart and his lack of caring for his "brother" Dean Ambrose when he needed him the most. Now, with both men offended at the other's prospect, a match is made between them by Triple H at Starrcade; a No Holds Barred match.
Bianca Belair hosts an open challenge to anyone who wants to come for her Women's Championship; claiming that there is no one in UCW brave enough to take on someone of her youth and caliber after the show she put on against Girlfriend. After a moment, however, Y'shtola accepts her challenge and states that she's brave enough because she knows she'll take the title off of Bianca--the both of them agreeing to save the matchup for Starrcade with Regal's approval.
In the main event of the go home show before Starrcade, Finn Balor and Nene clash in a one-on-one competition for the ages in which both combatants give their all just like they did at Survivor Series. Despite the 20 minute classic pushing them both to their very limits, Nene is able to overcome the prince with two critical superkicks and safely secure her match against Hank at Starrcade.
The champion and challenger then meet in the ring after the match, trading words ahead of the big day. It is then announced by Triple H after they meet that their match at Starrcade will be a 2 out of 3 falls match.
