What is a PIN for a credit card?
Using credit cards has its advantages when you know how, where, and when to use it. While there are loads of advantages there is also a security concern that you would have to address. This has to do with the PIN of your credit card and the password that you use online for transactions. Â
However, if you are not safe with your PIN or the password there are chances of financial losses. The safe way to use the cards is by not disclosing either of these to anyone else. By doing this you are securing your financial interests by all means.
PIN explained
A PIN is a the number that you use when you make physical transactions with your credit card. Â It is also a number that you use when you choose to withdraw cash from the ATM (Automated Teller Machine).
This is a the number that is supposed to be secretive and known only to the card user. Under no circumstances should the PIN be shared with anyone including your banker or bank employees. This number is usually 4 digits or 6 digits depending on your bank.
While using a PIN at an ATM or a retail outlet you would have to ensure no one sees it. This secretive number is also should be something that you can easily remember to use when needed.
How to set a PIN?
Many people make the mistake of creating a PIN with their date of birth. This is not a secure way to select or create a PIN as people can guess it easily. You must choose the random numbers that you can remember.
It is also advised that you do not use "1234", "123456", "0000" or "0123456" or numbers that are consecutive to each other. A PIN usually comes either through a mail or by way of an SMS to your mobile.
Once you receive your PIN for the first time you must change it immediately. You can do this by using an ATM close by and reset it to the number of your choice.
Securing your PIN
Apart from keeping your PIN secret, it is always a good idea to change it at regular intervals. This is one of the easier ways to keep financial frauds from happening with your credit card.
Always remember to intimate your bank immediately if your credit card is lost or stolen. Upon receiving a new card and a PIN ensure not use your old PIN for the replacement card.
