hey i just saw your rb of the jiankui he tweet and he didn’t actually manage to make the twins immune to hiv - the mutation is a 32bp deletion and you have to have it in both copies of the gene for it to confer immunity (but there’s evidence that it’s not 100%) and his results were a 15bp deletion in one copy for one of the twins and a 4bp deletion in both copies for the other, so not the mutation that confers HIV immunity. it’s unclear what effect these mutations would have, if any. just wanted to clarify bc i’m a biologist haha

bingeing just.. happens to me when an obsession starts, i don’t control it lol. i usually have a short attention span but i keep the transcript open on a tab so i can follow it if i know my focus is dwindling, and i try to do stuff that don’t take up much of my brain while listening, like folding laundry or doing sudoku or something 

and you haven’t met martin yet but once he started showing up i was like OKAY WHAT EPISODE IS HE IN NEXT and checked the wikia like “OKAY three more episodes today then”... you’ll probably understand once he shows up..!

also i was just so into the mystery element of it like i wanted to understand what was going on so badly but the questions kept piling so the only thing there was to do was to keep listening and i’m VERY impatient.......

hello manny my tlhod mutual!!!! i was looking through my friend’s ACE 1982 edition of tlhod and noticed at the end it says “this is Sorve Harth […] heir of Estre, my sons’ son” but in my two recent editions (2010 and 2016) it says “this is Sorve Harth […] heir of Estre, my son’s son.” do you know why recent editions use the singular possessive rather than (the correct) plural possessive? i couldn’t find anything online about the change

I have noticed that too but I don’t know what caused the discrepancy. My ‘76 Ace, ‘09 Orbit, and Library of America editions all have “sons’ son.” My 2019 Ace has “son’s”

I think the Library of America edition is the authoritative one, since it corrects Estraven’s spelling of Ashe’s landname (in other editions, Estraven inserts an extra R and writes down Osborth, but Ashe gives his name to Genly as Osboth) along with other typos. Though Lord Esvans would be correct to say both “sons’ son” and “son’s son,” I am inclined to think the “son’s” textual variant is simply an error, since Genly’s immediately subsequent reflection on Karhidish sibling incest taboos would incline me to believe the emphasis was on Sorve being both of Esvans’s sons’ son.
