like, last night i decided to play ponytown again like i do every few months to see the updates and chill for a bit

I think I might need a new home

You would not believe what is happening here at Spread Too Thin Farm. You do remember, I am sure, about my recent tummy troubles and the new sticker lady. She did get me to feel better, I will give her that but I have to stop with the praise there. Normally once I am back to eating and pooping I get left alone. Hay feeder gets to pat herself on her back for saving me again and we just go about our business. Things are different now with the new kid driving the blue truck. Not only does she talk about my weight, which no one likes to hear. She uses words like obese and morbid. Well, you can imagine what that has done to Hay Feeder. She is in a tizzy, agreeing to all the crazy ideas being thrown around. 

Take today for example. Kind of a normal day. Breakfast, stupid new meds added to breakfast, hay with the ponies. All good. Then out of the blue, my halter goes on and I am lead out of the pasture and up to the stall that the cars live in. 

I was asked to stand on a carpet like I was some sort of house pet. I didn’t really want to, so I did some spins, stepped on Hay Feeders feet a few times. Thought I had out witted them and they would give up. I should have known better. This new sticker lady is pretty free with the happy juice. ( think I will call this new person Juice) Quick poke and I was out like a light. She said it was a light sedation, but it was heavy enough that I could not pick my head up. What I saw happening, I could only see from my knees down, but it went something like this. 

Juice got some sort of buzzy tool and stole a layer of my coat. If she wants a coat, she can go out and get one off the rack, like normal people. Don’t be stealing my fur. Then she sprayed my bare side with cold liquid, smelled a bit like Hay Feeders evening drink, only stronger. It was cold, as you might imagine, since it is winter in VT and I now have a big furless spot being soaked. She had a magic camera that showed my insides to them. She moved it all around my belly, side, underneath, other side. More fur was gone it was crazy but it didn’t hurt, thank goodness. 

What did they find you wonder. Well, who knows. I can tell you that whatever it is I don’t like it. It will require more meds, twice a day. One set I will get squirted in my mouth and the other, are you ready for this, will go up my BUTT. Do you remember that Hay Feeder can’t deal with shots, how the heck is she going to stick a tube 2 feet up my butt. Here come some KOWPOWs. 

I don’t even know what to think. I just had a simple belly ache like weeks ago. What does that have to do with any of this? 

Hay Feeder - Twinkles has some elevated numbers in her blood. We checked her liver today. It was ok, but we did find some inflammation in her gut so we are treating her with some antibiotics for 7 days. We will do some more blood tests, but we think we are dealing with an infection. Her white blood cell count was low. and because of her weight her leptin was elevated. If any of my friends want to help with giving the meds and aren’t afraid of a little minis kicks I would not turn down the help.

Because I was tagged twice and I tend to ramble on, here’s a cut.

Starr’s Questions:

1) How long have you’ve been playing the sims franchise? No idea... about 13 years? My first Sims game was Bustin’ Out for PS2, then my uncle gave me a copy of TS1 Complete Collection which was promptly installed on my late Mac, Terry. I started playing TS2 when OFB was the newest expansion. So yeah... more than half my life.

2) Do you have a favorite sim? why? I love all my Sims! I’ll admit there are some I’d be more likely to reroll a death ROS for than others, but I’m not naming any names. If I do the others will get me. :P

3) What’s your favorite sims career? I don’t really use careers in my game, since Kulo Seeri isn’t the sort of hood that has them. My Sims do have professions and crafts, and I think the one I enjoy most out of them is the not-quite-school run by Otolo zan-Ave and Markal Go. I haven’t shown it on my blog yet, but basically the two elders summon the village kids to their lot with Simlogical’s meeting controller. They offer lessons on various subjects using Sophie-David’s opportunity objects (usually invisible) but for most of the time the kids just run wild together and make friends, enemies and occasionally childhood sweethearts.

4) What’s your CC weakness? Rugs, paintings, hair, etc? CC in general! My good old external hard drive Trixie contains *checks* 190 GB of hoarded stuff. Most of it I will probably never use, but it’s there in case I ever need any of it. This is a side effect of my hoarder nature and obsession with TS2 and I’m not ashamed of it in the slightest. Fun fact: That same hoarder-obsessive nature applies to dice. I have over 1000. Dicedicedicedice... yay :)

5) What aspect of the game have you not played with, or tried, yet? Businesses, vacation hoods, or university. I’ve been wanting to experiment with them for a while but they fit into Kulo Seeri like a foot into a glove. However, that doesn’t stop me occasionally trying to shoehorn bits in - an in-hood “university” might be a possibility for KS, maybe representing a craft apprenticeship. I will have to test that out.

6) When do you usually play? When I’m awake. No kidding - since I’m unable to work due to a combination of autism, depression, social anxiety, semi-regular bouts of ill health, several debilitating phobias and a distaste for the “cog in the machine” life, I am essentially a professional Simmer.

7) What’s your simming routin? (settle in with a drink and a few hours, keep the game open for days, etc) Play in bursts throughout the day, occasionally taking screen breaks to play board games or dice games or kick ideas around with my mum, or to snooze.

8) Do you talk sims with others outside the simming community? My mum and support workers, yes. My mum is probably the non-Simmer who knows most about the game - when she’s home, she’s my go-to person to bat around ideas for KS.

9) Besides tumblr, how else do you interact with the simming community? Through my story blog on Blogger, and also through Plumb Bob Keep and Garden of Shadows’ forums. I don’t know any other Simmers personally, only through the forums and blogs.

10) Why the sims vs other games? It’s pure escapism for me - it lets me immerse myself in another setting without being too focused on achieving certain objectives (the reason I could never get into computer RPGs and still haven’t completely warmed to TS4). I love being able to customise pretty much everything the game has to offer and create new worlds to explore through the eyes of my Sims.

Shannon’s Questions:

1) When you’re playing, do you have the game music on or off? Sometimes I listen to my own music while I’m building, and my Sims don’t really have stereos, so mostly off. I do have a few disguised/invisible stereos but I don’t use them much, and I have - thanks to a tutorial by @greatcheesecakepersona​ - added my Unofficial Kulo Seeri Playlist to the selection of loading tunes.

2) How long have you been playing your current hood? In one form or another, Kulo Seeri has been around for ten years. I started it in April 2007 as a third rate legacy, and it ended up taking me in all sorts of directions I never expected. It’s currently on Generation 7 and has a lot of in-game history, folklore and dreaming behind it. I love it to bits <3

3) Uh-oh! Your game just exploded: are you going to rebuild or start afresh? Rebuild, of course. I couldn’t imagine being without Kulo Seeri after all this time. Although I’ve rebuilt it what feels like a million times and hate setup and hoodlessness, I’m still too invested in it to let it go.

4) What is your favourite Sims version and why? Sims 2, of course! It’s pure sandbox fun, easy to customise and remove from the default modern setting, lends itself well to a huge variety of playstyles, and IMO it’s got more heart than 3 and 4 put together.

5) What’s an expansion you’d love to see that EA never did for any version of the game? I have to second Shannon’s idea of a prehistoric-style one. I’d also love to see more ways for younger Sims to act out that don’t require modern vehicles or technology.

6) Do you use cheats (apart from building cheats) when you play? Yes, not too often because I enjoy having a challenge, but I do use money cheats (KS doesn’t have money, so I always give them enough to move into their homes) and mood cheats (when I can’t stand to see a struggling family suffer any longer, or I need a Sim to stay awake for a photo opportunity).

7) Do you consider yourself primarily a player, builder or decorator? Or other? Player first, storyteller second, don’t touch Build Mode unless I have to. I’m not bad at building, landscaping or decorating... I just find it tedious and avoid it.

8) Do you play pre-mades, your own sims or a mix? Most of my Sims were born in Kulo Seeri, with a handful of premade Sims (mostly from TS3 hoods) who have moved there over the years. Some of my Sims originate from other players’ games, too.

9) What is your favourite kind of business to run? Or what kind would you like to run, if your game version allowed it? Hmm. Never really done much with businesses, but I’d like to have a small trading post of some sort in Kulo Seeri, once the population reaches the point where it splits into two villages. However, KS culture regards trade as the most unclean occupation, so I’m not sure who’d run it.

10) If you were a sim, what would be your aspiration and lifetime want? Feel free to translate that to your own game version - I only speak TS2! My aspiration is Pleasure/Knowledge, with the Pleasure bit being more “stay at home and play games all day” than “go out clubbing and dating”, and the Knowledge bit being limited to my major obsessions: Sims, dice, notebooks, vintage 90′s My Little Ponies, and Plants vs. Zombies. But my LTW would be "reach golden anniversary” - I am a hopeless romantic despite my asexuality, and I’m fed up of getting close to people (mostly support workers and therapists) and then never seeing them again. I want a long-term partnership like my parents have (over 30 years and counting!) with someone who isn’t a support worker or a therapist or other person who listens to my problems partly because it’s their job.

11)  What do you think Sims 5 will be like? *VT Cynic Powers Activate!* It will probably feel more mechanical and repetitive than TS4, and be more goal-orientated than sandbox play. It will probably also have more online features and in-game ads. The hoods or worlds or towns or whatever they’ll be calling them by then will be harder to customise, be designed for legacy style play with some form of annoying story progression, and feature several familiar TS2 premades warped beyond recognition. Modders will find that game behaviour will be much harder to alter, because EA will want to stop fans adding new features so they can release said features as overpriced add-on packs. It will run on patch levels which will force players to update every five minutes, then sneak little bits of the latest pack’s coding into games that don’t have it installed, so that everyone has to have ALL THE PACKS for it to work correctly. (This was one of my major gripes with TS3 patch levels - and then TS4 topped that by adding new functionality into the stuff packs.)

So after some thought, I pulled a paragraph from Wednesday’s post. Not because I felt remotely guilty for anything that I said, but I’m trying to keep the peace until everything is completely finalized. I’m so close.

While yesterday was about looking back, today is all about looking to the future! 2019 is proving to be an exciting year already.

Maui

Back in December I decided that I was going on a big trip for my 30th birthday whether I went alone or coerced someone to go along, so I proceeded to plan a week long trip to Maui. Initially I wanted to go abroad somewhere for the first time (I’m still coming for you Italy…), but I really wanted to go away over my birthday week and the odds weren’t high for me getting my name changed in time to apply for a passport and get it back in time. So, darn, going to have to compromise and go to Hawaii. 😉

After booking my flight and AirBnB my mom decided to go with me. She and I spend a lot of time together and go on adventures together regularly, but this will be our biggest adventure to date. I’m looking forward to going with her and stretching both of our comfort zones a little bit while we’re gone. So far I’ve booked a whale watching boat tour since we’re going right at the tail end of whale season in Hawaii. There is also talk of kayaking, snorkeling and maybe horseback riding, though apparently I’ve booked a trip to an island that doesn’t allow you to ride on the beach, so I’ve yet to determine if riding on the island is worth the cost if I can’t ride on the beach. If anyone has any experience with this, feel free to fill me in. I’m pumped about this trip though, and beyond grateful that K is willing to keep my dogs and run by the farm for me to check on the horses. I truly don’t know what I’d do without her.

Joey

Another reason to not spend money on potential horseback riding in Maui is that soon enough I’ll be able to sit on Joey. I’ve been watching him pretty carefully this winter and have decided to go ahead and send him to the trainer to be started under saddle during his two year old year. He’s mentally more than ready and physically I think that the exercise will do him well. He’s looking very round lately, though there are random glimpses of the horse to come underneath the polar bear fluff. It’s next to impossible to get a picture of him that demonstrates the good moments; they all turn out to show him still looking like a pudgy little kid’s pony. For example:

I haven’t been graining him since before Christmas, though I didn’t make a conscious decision not to, I just didn’t start him back on grain after the big snow we had. When I talked to the trainer last weekend he said to go ahead and start him back on grain despite the fact that he looks like a walrus. My words…not his…he is unaware that he is getting a walrus/polar bear hybrid in for training in April, though the polar bear tendencies will be gone by then. I did end up going with the trainer that is 30 minutes from home. I went down on Saturday and watched him work with three different horses. From what I’ve seen, I think he’ll be a good fit for Joey. He’s a quiet and kind rider and agrees with me that Joey’s long term soundness is our first priority and that developing him to be a safe amateur ranch riding horse is second. Any competitive successes are just the icing on the cake.

So just like that, young Joey will be thrust into adulthood this spring. It generally takes a ranch riding horse a year to get to the point where they’re ready to go out and show after being started under saddle, so by starting soon, we’ll be more likely to be able to show next year. Of course, you guys know how horses are, so anything could happen.

Paige

Speaking of how anything can happen to horses, Paige is still mysteriously lame. With how much of a cluster my life was at the end of 2018, I was unable to get her to VT to be xrayed. I had anticipated that I would be living in an improved two income household during the fall and would be able to afford to get caught up on a bunch of things, but instead I found myself re-calibrating and figuring my situation out. Now that I’ve got a better grasp on things, I want to get her in to be looked over soon. She doesn’t seem any more lame than she was last summer, but nothing has improved with months out of work either, so I’m apprehensive to find out what’s going on. That appointment will hopefully happen prior to Joey moving out, but after the weather around here becomes less sketchy for trailering.

Copper and Robin

These two are allowed to exist and be happy and healthy on the property for as long as I’m lucky to have them, but I also don’t have any grand plans for them outside of that in 2019. Pasture sound and mental sanity is a lot to ask for these two sometimes, so we’re going to keep things simple for them. 😉 On another note, the Clydesdale boarder has been sold and moved out over Thanksgiving, so I’m open to

Donkeys

Luckily there will be no donkey births this year. Russell was gelded in December of 2017, so his swimmers should’ve been long gone by June when the girls had foaled and became able to be bred again. Rudy moved in with K this fall, so Russell and the three girls are the entirety of the donkey herd right now. If I knew of someone I trusted who wanted a donkey, I’d be willing to let Russell move in with them. The girls have been bullying him more lately and haven’t been letting him eat as much as I’d like, so he’s loose in the barn with a free choice round bale and is getting grain rations until I feel better about his weight. So if anyone local-ish is looking for a little gelded jack that is easy to get along with, I’m willing to part with Russell if he’s going somewhere where he’ll be taken care of.

Horse Shows

Originally I intended to show Joey at the APHA Eastern Nationals that are being held in Lexington (two hours from home!) this year. The combination of lack of funds due to him going to training in April plus the fact that it is coming up soon in late March with limited information available about the event has caused me to reconsider that and I’ll just be driving myself down to cheer on friends and leaving Joey at home. I really hope it is here again next year when he’s able to be shown in more than two classes so that I can support the concept. It just doesn’t seem to be worth the money to me when we’ll only be eligible for tobiano and two year old lone line.

We will still be attending the VPHA Futurity show on Labor Day weekend, though not showing under saddle. I intend to take him in the two year old versions of all the same classes we did in October and try to win some more money. We should be much more competitive in longe line since he will have been in training for months at that point. He will lope on a circle by then I’m confident. 😉 They also do not have two year old ranch classes, so his first opportunity to show under saddle won’t be until next year, which is preferred in my opinion. We’ll see how he’s doing training wise…I may get to ride him around the showgrounds for fun? Or maybe my trainer will come down? Who knows…this is a new world for me…I’m certainly not used to having a trainer.

Everything Else

I don’t have much else planned for 2019 at this point, but it is still early in the year and my life changes constantly. I do plan to have some vet work done on the dogs this spring. Ariel needs her teeth cleaned and Tucker needs to be neutered. 2018 was one of the lowest maintenance years for vet work on the dogs, so I’m hoping this year will be comparable outside of those procedures.

As always, there are a few house projects and a few farm projects I’d like to do, but with prioritizing Joey’s education, anything that costs significant amounts of money will be put off for a while. I’m very lucky to be in the position in life where my financial decisions only impact me, so prioritizing something so incredibly first world isn’t as big of a deal as it would be in many situations. I’m not saying everyone should be en route to divorce before thirty, but it certainly makes it easier to make these sort of decisions alone.

So, here’s to a year of selfish spending and (low budget) self improvement. Hopefully I’ll even get to ride a horse more than 6 times this year? 😉

John Killacky’s “Embodied Voice: Video Narratives”

Editor’s Note: A retrospective of John R. Killacky’s videos will be on view Jan. 19 through Feb. 16, 2018 at the Champlain College Art Gallery. Killacky, executive director of the Flynn Center, has made numerous films and videos in his hybrid career.

The opening reception with the artist will be Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:00 p.m. Included will be three AIDS-related works from the ‘90s, three disability-themed pieces from the 2000’s, and two recent video collaborations with Vermont artists Todd R. Lockwood and Art Bell.

The Champlain College Center for Publishing and the Champlain College Art Gallery collaborated to produce an Artist’s Catalog for this exhibit, and Professional Writing Student Lenny Farrell ’18 interviewed Killacky about the show.

Lenny Farrell: I wanted to begin with an introductory piece for people who do not know anything about you or the exhibit. What do you want people to take away from it?

John Killacky: When I was invited to do this, it gave me an opportunity to look at my past videos. These are agitprop works, politically engaged narratives that I was doing in response to what I was experiencing. The early works are about AIDS. It was in the early ‘90s, still early in the AIDS crisis, a different era than it is now. People were not living with AIDS; they were dying. It was a carnage. I started making those early videos as a way to grapple with the immense loss of so many people and commemorate friends, and hold them dearly.

I had to embrace bodies. The body was so feared back then in the ’90s. People were afraid of people with AIDS. Medical staff did not want to handle them. They were wearing gloves and masks.  It was very frightening. In these three AIDS pieces, it was about claiming the sacredness of the body. In the works, others and I are nude reclaiming the body. It is not to be feared.

Then I had surgery that went very badly in 1996, where I was paralyzed from the neck down. It took some months to learn how to walk again. Suddenly I had a new relationship with the world.  I had to reorient my own perspective, so I began to make video works about my reality. Again, I went back to the body.

The disabled body is something that society does not want to look at. I found myself again drawn to the body and saying to myself, “Okay, I have to celebrate these bodies to revere them, to hold them sacred.”

When people come into the exhibition, they will be looking at time capsules of what I was dealing with in the ‘90s and in the 2000’s. Last year, here in this gallery, Todd R. Lockwood worked with me to adapt one of the disability-related videos for his exhibition Portraiture Reimagined. I include this work, along with a new piece, which I see as a cleansing ritual, a purification, a coda for the entire exhibition.

In preparing, I realized the gallery experience is very different from screening videos. Few people are going to spend thirty minutes sitting in front of each monitor, listening to every single piece. Therefore, I organized them visually, imagining that people are only going to spend about ten minutes in the space. I created an audio loop with excerpts from all the pieces for people to hear. I hope that it draws the viewer experientially into my world. It was fun to reconceive these works as more of a visual and audio collage. I hope people engage with Embodied Voice.

LF: You transformed what was already there into something more cathartic to watch, to experience.

JK: I hope so. People have told me these works have been cathartic for them, so it will be interesting to see if people are willing to sit with the individual works. I recently read that in museum galleries the average time someone spends looking at something is 27 seconds. We are painting the walls gray and have three monitors in a darkened room. People enter through a dark curtain, thrown into my psyche in a disorienting way. If I can startle misperceptions of the viewer, I will be very happy.

LF: How would you say that your process has evolved or changed through this work?

JK: I continued making other kinds of films as well: an hour-long PBS concert video, Janis Ian: Live from Grand Center, and my husband Larry Connolly and I did  a 30-minute documentary Holding On featuring three couples dealing with disability, shown on Vermont PBS.  I also have a blast on YouTube with the little pony videos, because I have a Shetland pony, making lots of those silly little things. Those are much more light-hearted.

The works in the exhibition are political pieces. If there is an organizing principle, it is agitprop. I hope to startle people’s misconceptions. It is important; there is a history of AIDS activism that is not being remembered. In the early ‘90s, artists were picking up any tool they can, to rage against the government, rage against the medical establishment, and rage against families who were just throwing their children aside. This kind of an activism also infused my disability work, bringing forward issues, misconceptions, and fear. People feared people with AIDS. People feared people with disabilities. I hope I can break down some of that fear.

LF: Do you plan continuing your activism after you have retired from the Flynn in 2018?

JK: I used to bifurcate my identities as an arts administrator and as an artist. Once I was at the Harvard Film Archives showing one of my AIDS-related works. At that time, I was working at the Walker Art Center. Someone afterwards raised their hand and said, “Do you ever get confused with that guy with the same name who works at the Walker?”

I used to think, “People will think I am a less-serious arts administrator if I’m also an artist. And people will think I’m a less-serious artist if I’m an administrator.”  Since then, I integrate both identities.

I do ongoing commentaries at Vermont Public Radio (VPR) and VTDigger and occasional op-ed pieces for the Burlington Free Press. Therefore, I would say my political activism has remained in print form.

LF: Do you have any other plans or goals moving forward in 2018?

JK: In June, I will be stepping down as the Executive Director here at the Flynn, after eight years. I still have a more than full-time job running the place and I am trying not to figure out what I am going to do next. Next summer, I want to spend time figuring out what my service is going to be. My entire career has been in service to artists, to support artists, to make it possible for them to make their work, for them to share it with audiences, so part of that I hope will remain. In addition, in the ‘90s, I did a lot of hospice work, when my friends were dying from AIDS. I may do some of that work again; however, I am not going to determine it now. I plan to wait, give myself some space, and hopefully the universe will provide.
