for my @/browniepokemon username (the oldest username that i've kept), it was because i liked- and still like- brownies (the dessert), brownies (the faeries in fae mythology), and pokemon (from the pokemon franchise lol).
for my @/fanvoidkeith username, it's sort of a play on fanboy/fangirl, but like... void. fanvoid, because i didn't feel like much like a girl or a boy for most of my life, so... void. (i eventually figured out i was nonbinary, lmao). i also am a very big nerd about space and stuff, and the void of space is fascinating. and keith is one of my names that i regularly go by, among many others on my list of names that i keep in my (metaphorical) back pocket.

Origin welcomes you
I've decided to make a dedicated location for my story and to give me more motivation to draw! I do have a set schedule so I won't have every day to work on the story, but hopefuly that won't hinder the pacing =3
Rules and Info:
This isn't going to primerally be an ask blog, however you are allowed to ask the mews, two and other mons anything you'd like. They can give you lore bits.
You are allowed to interact with the mons as you please as long as you be respectful, however the interaction itself likely won't be cannon to the overall story. Some might if you're lucky.
There is going to be multiple origin stories told in a set structure so that as the story is told, everything makes sense.
I do not want to hear any abusive language towards me or even directed at the characters, and i'd rather keep away from NSFW contect as much as possible.

is there any faerie/fae lore we're allowed to know (besides the fact that Pop got cursed by them that one time with the mushroom ring) 👀

The fae that are in ebott like to disguise themselves as mages or magic animals, and they definitely didn’t live in this world before the crash ;)

of course, i can’t pass on a chance for keith lore !!could i maybe get an uhh 💔 for them? 👀
SORRY IT TOOK A HOT MINUTE TO RESPOND I LOVE U MY NUMBER ONE KEITH FAN <3333
💔 BROKEN HEART - what could their partner do that would absolutely break their heart?
This is a little tricky to answer plainly. You must have the Context about Keith's major relationship and I will gladly infodump <3
Because of a past relationship, Keith hardly opens up emotionally Ever, but they still ended up dating Jaquoya (Jaquoya asked them out)
((also here's Jaq bc I hardly talk about her so u have some visuals LOL))
Tumblr media
They met thru Void Bliss, a night club that Jaquoya owns and she holds a lot of dance challenges there, which is the main thing that people come to the club for bc it's rly fun and people are good sports with the dance offs because it ultimately is just a fun activity with silly prizes or drinks as rewards. AND it's a great way to make new friends :]
They became friends bc Keith began coming by frequently and was getting attention bc they're a pretty good dancer and they just also quickly improved a lot bc they visited so often - and they were bold enough to challenge Jaquoya to a dance off at some point. It became less competititive because they just ended up dancing WITH each other than against it each other. Cute stuff.
Keith said yes to dating her whenever she asked bc they didn't want to keep being mopey about the past and they did also like Jaq. She's a very patient person and also very different from Keith's ex, so they felt safe with her :] It was also a romantic relationship bc Jaq is ace and Keith felt more inclined to be open about themself because Jaq wouldn't hurt them in the same way as they were hurt in the past. (it would just be another flavor of hurt lol)
Anyway, things were lovely and delightful and Keith had a bit more of their energized self back - but when Keith ended up dipping real low, they made it very difficult for Jaq to be there for them bc they just shut off emotionally and that's how they cope with overwhelming feelings, but it's not a very good strategy.
AND THEN KEITH DISAPPEARS FOR A YEAR. and then they come back, now infected with Kqo'twec the Parasite God, and Jaq is the first person they seek out. And there's A Lot to talk about but they first try to get the gang back together (bc Black Orbit kind of fell apart when Keith disappeared) but Keith does talk to her and apologizes bc they didn't tell her a lot of things when they were struggling and left things in very poor taste. Keith wasn't actually expecting they'd be around anymore to deal with the consequences of their actions, but they got a second chance because of Kqo'twec and Keith wanted to do better because Jaq deserves better than what they gave them.
They make up and like 'officially' break up bc Keith isn't in a place to handle a relationship and Jaq is still a very good friend (also they wanna focus on getting back the gang's footing in Sunjin.) yada yada, story goes on, they might be developing feelings for each other again bc lots have happened and Keith is more open and honest and generally more confident than in the past and the two of them might be getting close again but WHOOP who would've thought, Keith STILL struggles when things go sour and they're too afraid to tell Jaq things because being honest and confiding is what hurt them badly in the past and they still haven't completely worked that out. At least this time, Keith is able to tell her that they ARE afraid to tell her some things and they shouldn't act further on how they feel about each other. Which is still a huge improvement. Jaq is patient and if Keith ever feels like telling her, she'll be around because they're still very good friends :]
ANYWAY TO ACTUALLY ANSWER THE QUESTION
Jaq could very easily break Keith's heart by just deciding she doesn't want to be involved with them anymore and leave them and the gang - and Keith is by no means an easy person to deal with because they don't ask for help or support when they're struggling with something personal. But Jaq is a very patient and understanding person and even if Keith is frustrating as a friend (and especially as a partner), she cares about them and so does the rest of the gang. Honestly I think Keith would prefer that she would actually just break their heart and leave them so they can validate self destructive feelings and isolate more because they honestly don't feel good enough to be worth the effort to deal with their behavior.
And even when Jaq actually gets Mad at them and loses her chill a bit and yells at Keith and tells them they need a Time Out from being the leader (Jaq is 2nd in command) because they're not being honest with the gang - she's not mad because Keith is keeping secrets but because those secrets are actively harming them more and just. [shakes Keith] stop being a self-destructive bastard damn you!!!
This obviously hurts Keith a lot bc Jaq hasn't ever snapped at them, but what hurts the most is that she isn't giving up on them. (She is however creating breathing room by putting Keith in Time Out and taking command while Keith goes to sort out their shit with themself before they're allowed to come back to the gang bc Jaq also needs a damn breather bc ngl Keith can be so frustrating and if they won't let her help, then another approach is needed to get them to work on their issues)
Breaking Keith's heart would be a mercy instead of inflicting them with the Pain and Suffering of being Cared About despite their flaws, squeezing their poor heart so hard - that shit hurted ✌️😔 [Hits Keith with a beam infused with The Power of Friendship]
This is spoilers for their relationship, but not that plot relevant - they settle with being (best) friends. It's bittersweet bc they both do like each other, but being partners is just too draining for both and channeling those feelings as friends work better. This fact doesn't reaalllyy change much, it just like. lifts the contraints that the concept of being partners have and it makes their friendship work very well :] also post-story they aren't hanging out as much bc Things Happen and Keith is spending a lot of time travelling and work thru stuff that happened in The Plot, but they still keep in touch.

Love Me Twice, Save Me Thrice || Chapter Seven on Patreon
Keith/Lance - Rated M - Chapter Word Count: 9.5k - Total Word Count So Far: 96,000+
Keith has always lived his life by a few simple rules that boil down to one ultimatum: never let the fey know he’s an ironblood. The byproduct of the rare union between a fey and a human, he’s seen as dangerous. Able to harness the power of his fey bloodline without the drawbacks that keep them in check. He doesn’t remember much of his life before Shiro found him, but things have been pretty good since. Despite the fact that his guardian turned brother figure is a fey, his best friend is a druid, and his dog is a blink wolf, his life is pretty ordinary.
That is, until he runs into a beautiful fey with eyes like ice and a touch like fire. A fey that makes him want to break the rules and calls out to a part of him that’s remained shrouded for so long. With their lives irrevocable intertwined, drawn to one another despite all the warnings, they’re set on a path that threatens to destroy who they are and save who they might become.
The course of love never did run smooth.
Chapter Excerpt Below!
Chapters will be made available to the $15 tier as they’re finished. Once the whole fic is complete, chapters will one-by-one become available to the $2 tier before uploading to Ao3.
This fic will be my shot at one of my favorite genres: modern faeries and modern fantasy. Bleeding together a magical world of lore with the ordinary of modern society. I’m hoping I can do the genre justice.
Reblogs are very appreciated! Since tumblr killed links and tags

“Lance.”
His voice echoes in the void that’s been carved out of his chest. A void he’s lived with for so long. A void that is suddenly being filled. Memories slotting into place. Piece by piece. Filling a place that’s always been empty and cold and nothing.
But now it’s something.
Something so wonderful.
Something so beautiful.
Something that aches.
“Lance.”
It’s a mantra. It’s a prayer. It’s a name that brings so much comfort. A wholeness he had never known he was missing. A warmth he had been lacking. An important piece of himself that had been missing.
A treasured piece he can’t believe he had been able to forget.
The name slips from his lips as every memory drifts into that voice in his chest. As each one settles into place. Slowly clicking together. Weaving together a fabric that binds together the fractals of himself. Each one making him more whole. More fully. Until his chest feels fit to burst.
“Lance.”
Slowly— achingly slowly— the disjointed memories start to settle. Start to bind together with his known memories. And his frazzled mind starts to see them as one whole. Starts to process. Starts to understand.
All the implications.
All the truths.
His history with Lance.
Because they have a history.
A crazy, convoluted one of youth, loneliness, and innocent young— well, love. Because he had loved Lance. He had fallen for that young fey boy when he knew that he shouldn’t.
And—
He had done it again.

Void - UPDATE
Okay, so yesterday I typed out a timeline for my VOID fic and after several agonizing hours, here’s the run down:
Since I’m trying to include some elements from the series along with my own lore, the whole fic as a whole amounts to a good 20 or so chapters. My only fear is rewatching Season 8 to get certain scenes since the transcripts I’m using for quotes are pretty lackluster (they don’t even put down who’s speaking at which part from time to time.)
Some original elements that were supposed to be in the show (via from the mouths of the VAs) and moments from Season 7 will be mentioned as the story progresses and certain moments will be flipped and given to Keith and/or Lance respectively to fit the story.
Also, as the story gets longer, so will the word count. Basically, the chapters are going to be longer than usual.
TL;DR I’m glutton for punishment, but KICK, y’know?
I’m still debating on starting an Ao3 account and posting the story there as well to expand on sites to write for in order to keep myself busy, but I’m currently in a “maybe” kinda space.
I’ll start getting back to work on the next chapter when I’m in a better mind space...again. But thank you guys for sticking by my story and I sincerely hope that Void helps you forget Season 8 and gives you a better feeling of enjoyment than the actual season. :)

“Uncanonical” Lionswamp Headcanons...with a side of Pilots and Void SOS. (salt to taste)
Princess Allura really should’ve been the one to Pilot the BlackLion when Shiro went missing, we all know that. Not only did she actually have Leadership Experience, King Alfor literally connected her Soul and Quintessence to the Lions. Allura even later connects to a White Lion, which suggests that although thematically she’s shown as Pink, she actually has White Quintessence.
(Sorta like how Shiro’s the Black Paladin, but is often represented with shades of purple and indigo. Also Pink contrasts while White-on-white...sorry just not a fan. Her clothes are also Thematically White, with touches of Pink and Altean Blue seen on Coran and in her...well. White Castle.)
You know. White Light splits into visible colors? (Which going off that? Red and Purple light reeeaaallly couldn’t be any further from eachother. Just saying.)
Which, great! That fits the original lore pretty well! So...why did BlackLion not choose Allura, and Allura ended up with BlueLion? *offscreen salt and ranting. Okay. Better now.*
BlackLion knew where Shiro was. Black didn’t want a new Paladin, Black wanted Shiro back. And considering Shiro only spent any significant time with the rest of the Team for about two months my timeline, and really only knew Pidge and Keith pretty well before Kerberos...and Keith’s closer to Shiro than Pidge is...Black borrows Keith, and even lets Shiro’s quintessence slip through as a “Shiro Is HERE!” beacon. Not...that anyone got the memo. Also monsantos. Which it helped that despite being Literally As Incompadible As You Can Get, Black successfully used Keith as a battery to save Shiro previously while recovering from a doublewhammy of Zarkon&Haggar. (All the other Lions only had Haggar, and that was more than enough to get them out of commision for the better part of a day.)
When Allura sits in Red, she’s wanting to follow in her father’s footsteps. Red didn’t want that for her. Allura is Allura, not Alfor. (And Red borrowed Lance because the Lion got frustrated at Lance for doubting himself. Blue really could have handled that better.)
When Blue “rejects” Lance, it’s out of frustration for Red “making Allura cry” and Black borrowing Red’s Paladin. So...basically picking up the pieces, when either Lion shouldn’t have been so sentimental and just accepted Allura as their Pilot. (Also, Allura’s the one Bonded to Voltron and has the quintessence talent to eventually pull Shiro back out...Black!)
When Black later saves Jiro, it’s twofold: Jiro’s quintessence is a much better (but not ideal) fit than Keith’s (plus he has the heart of a leader...which Keith...doesn’t, and apparently Shiro’s Stuck if not even Keith can sense him (and can’t tell the difference between Shiro and a cloned sibling...)), and Jiro was hurting. (I’d like to think that Black loves all Shiroganes.) However, Jiro pushed himself too soon (at...sigh...Keith’s insistance), and beyond having (valid, unfortunately) doubts about himself, Jiro kept trying to respect what he thought was the Lion’s choice until Keith’s repeated neglect forced his hand. (Also Kolivan intentionally poaching a Paladin/BlackPilot despite being the one to insist Black get a NEW Pilot...)
When Shiro later contacts Lance from within Voltron Quintessence Field? Jiro’s quintessence is “just enough” to form a Bridge Shiro can use. (But, Jiro himself has less quintessence than Shiro, especially with his HaggarMigraine being pretty severe that episode with how he snapped at everyone. Hence why Jiro isn’t present, and only able to be used as a Bridge finally instead. Which stress exasperates migraines, and they were under a LOT of stress about Sam, Zarkon, and Lotor.) Which...although Pidge still should’ve been the closet to Shiro after Keith, making a “kill switch” for Shiro’s prosthetic but not fully knowing what it’d do and hoping she never has to find out would make her pretty emotionally distant from guilt. Which if both Keith and Pidge are out, that leaves Quintessence Color Theory again. Ideally Allura should’ve been the solution (again...) with her alchemical skill and being Bonded to Voltron and having White Quintessence, but whatever. So, Lance is left as a sorta callback to That Guy’s My Hero and Blue Quintessence is Pretty Close-ish to Purple/Black. Buuuuut...not close enough to get a full message out, and while Lance is closer to Shiro than Hunk? He really only had about two months. And with Jiro’s confessions, Lance probably thinks whatever’s going on is stress related and thinks offering himself as an emotional support is the solution “Shiro” needs to not break his trust. (Aka, thinking like a Leg vs an Arm.)
(...so I’ll just have Jiro be the one to finally find Shiro, then make it a Team Effort to get Shiro back out! Aaaand explore everyone trying to sort themselves back out because it’s fertile ground for character and relationships development and finally sorting through Fresh&Stale angst.
(Once everything’s finally sorted back out and the OG Lion-Paladin lineup is restored, Allura’s EveryLion’s top pick for Pilot if they can’t fly with their Paladins. Wellll except BlackLion. She’s second for Black—the Lion’s grown even fonder of the cute lil’ clonecub. Less to do with Allura’s Ability (she’s got plenty of it), more to do with Black just being sentimental. Which by this point Allura’s finally confident in her position of being Voltron’s MissionControl Commander. Which, Quintessence Compatibility isn’t the only thing that matters with being able to fly a Lion, it’s just at least half of it. 60/40, maybe?)

New Content ≠ New Information
- or why you might have been underwhelmed by the recent Voltron: Legendary Defender trailer.
A few people dropped into my messages yesterday and said the exact same thing, “But Dev, we got new content in the Season 8 trailer. How did we not learn anything new?”
I’m paraphrasing a bit here, but the intent was all the same - we got new content, so we know more about Season 8, right?
Not really, no.
Tumblr media
Below the cut - what trailers should tell us, how Season 2′s trailer rocked, what we didn’t learn from the Season 8 trailer, and - okay, I give. There are two new things we learned about Season 8 from yesterday’s meatless burger.
(I can do food metaphors, too.)
A trailer is supposed to do a few things, but its main purpose to explain what plot is coming up and give relevance to the new content.
Let me put this in a food metaphor for you. Let’s say the Voltron Twitter handle promises you food. You assume a burger. Now a good trailer is just about half the burger because a season has two main obstacles - the first problem the heroes must overcome and then a second, harder issue at the season’s end.
So a trailer should explain the initial problem and foreshadow to the final problem. That means you’re still hungry at the end of the trailer, and that’s a good thing. You now need to eat the rest of the burger - or see the season.
Do me a favor - rewatch the Season 2 trailer on Netflix. I’ll wait.
...
You didn’t, did you? *mock glare*
Tumblr media
Within the first 31 seconds, you know the “lions of lore” have returned. You know Zarkon, the villain, can only be defeated by these lions, and you know that Zarkon is actively hunting Voltron PLUS to raise the stakes, Zarkon can find Voltron anywhere.
...that’s pretty much, in 30 seconds, is a recap of Season 1 and the entire plot of Season 2.
Then we get -  New Worlds, New Allies, New Villains - which rounds out the new places we visit, the Blades, and the Robeasts. The trailer ends with the defacto showdown you’ve been waiting for since the end of the previous scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, we don’t know if Shiro will win this battle verse Zarkon, so we’re not hungry but ravenous for the rest of this burger. And double points to the creator of this trailer because the scene above in “Space Mall” also foreshadows the second showdown between Zarkon and Shiro in “Blackout,” the second problem of the season.
Tumblr media
You essentially have S2 wrapped up in a 1:45 trailer.
Then, when we watched Season 2 - not only did Voltron deliver the rest of the burger, they also threw in some fries and a milkshake.
Good job, VLD Season 2.
Season 8 Trailer - where’s the beef?
The issue with the Season 8 trailer is that it gave us a salad, not even the burger, and I’m not hungry after eating the salad. But I’m also not satiated. In fact, I think the tomatoes weren’t good, and I’m just...not...feeling right.
The trailer starts with a longer version of the teaser trailer from October. I wasn’t thrilled with the original teaser trailer, but I understood it. The paladins have changed over the last two years. Now, we’ve arrived at the final season.
No need to redo that in the first 30 seconds of the new trailer and certainly no need to just take random quotes that don’t really reflect where we are now. But - I’ll give. Okay. You want to set the scene, Voltron. Got it.
But then once the new stuff is supposed to show, you cut to a scene from “The White Lion,” an episode from Season 6.
Tumblr media
And okay - the paladins are heading back into Oriande, but...we knew that from the NYCC trailer. Show us something we don’t know.
Then we see Hunk firing his bayard -
Tumblr media
- which was great in the Season 7 trailer, too. How about something new? ...sure, okay. He’s in a forest. That... doesn’t thrill me - unless I know the forest is the Forest of Life or something. ...more on that in a moment.
Next, the trailer cuts to Lance who is going into the Void - an old scene from “Postmorteum,” Season 5.
Tumblr media
Then we see Allura making a tree glow.
Tumblr media
So? Allura can make Voltron glow. She did it in Season 4 - “A New Defender,” so why is this tree important? I have no attachment to this tree - or Hunk’s forest adventure. You gotta give me a reason to care about this forest, Voltron.
Then we see Hunk and Lance flying through the forest, so...again, we’re in the forest. Good. We know Pidge is also in this forest from the NYCC trailer, so...I’m glad the paladins decided to go for a picnic.
Then we see an explosion with the lions - which we’ve seen explosions with the lions before. Why should I care about this particular explosion? (I have a point! I’m getting there...)
Tumblr media
Then we see Matt from the NYCC trailer. Not new. Green comes for Pidge. That happened in the first season, “Return of the Gladiator.”
And here - 49 seconds in - is when we get our first new information of the trailer!
Tumblr media
We didn’t know that Haggar fired on the original paladins, possibly killing them. Yes! FINALLY. After all, we knew the original paladins were going to show up from the Voltron Tumblr Questions after SDCC. So good. Now we have context. (More on to that in one moment. I have to put Keef in cuz it’s Keef.)
Then Keith uses his Blade of Marmora blade -
Tumblr media
- which he’s been wielding since Season 2.
My point is - none of these things mean ANYTHING without context, which the trailer does not give us.
Who is Keith attacking? Why is he using his BoM blade and not his bayard? Without the context, as far as I know is - he decided he likes to use his BoM blade, which he did in “The Black Paladins.”
The forest! Why is that forest important? Give me a reason to care about this forest - that it holds the Tree of Life and the universe grew from that tree. Something! Anything!
Even Allura’s end remarks -
Tumblr media
- are a lie because there was an episode called, “Defenders of All Universes” in Season 6.
Voltron, DreamWorks, been there, done that. Move on.
The trailer needed to explain what is actually happening in Season 8 and what makes it special, the final dark night, what are we facing? Haggar? And what? What is she really trying to do and how is it different from what Lotor did in Season 6?
That’s the beef.
Instead of having Shiro promise the team is going to come home triumphant - it’s Voltron. Of course they are going to win. If you actually have them lose and the universe be destroyed, then at least that’d be a true plot twist. Ultimately - the Defenders of the Universe fail to defend the universe. -
- tell us Haggar’s plan. Have Allura say, “Haggar wants to go back in time and change what happened to Altea and Daibazaal. She wants to rewrite history using the Tree of Life.”
What’s the hook here? The reality that we know might never exist. The Voltron Paladins may never have existed, and more over - should the paladins try to stop her - or help her? Is it wrong for them to wipe out the last 10k years of Galra conquering, and if so - why?
And then the lions are also in the middle of this - because they are the reason Altea and Daibazaal ultimately destroyed each other.
Then, show us context or delete context and show us new aspects of the show. Don’t show me Lance and Keith plugging in their bayards to create the big thrusters on Voltron again.
Tumblr media
We watched Season 7. We know!
Tumblr media
And explosions don’t thrill us anymore without the context. So either show that this is Earth being destroyed - OR better yet - show me the Blue Bayard being plugged into its slot by Allura or Lance. Show me the Blue Bayard and the Red Bayard. Show me the Yellow Bayard and the Green Bayard. Show me the Black Bayard and Yellow Bayard. Show me Black and Green, Red and Yellow, Black and Blue - these are all combinations that have never been done!
Give me something to look forward to finding out, not things we have already seen.
...Okay, there are two places where the trailer achieves this. The first place was above with Haggar and the original paladins, and the second was here -
Tumblr media
Sincline or Haggar attacking Atlas, which arguably isn’t new content because we just saw them on different sides of the battlefield in the NYCC trailer - but I’m making an exception because we didn’t know that Sincline and Atlas would actually meet up.
TL;DR - Where’s my burger, Voltron? You’re dropping thirteen episodes two weeks from today, and yet - we’ve only seen 53 seconds of new content. What gives?
I’m not asking you to feed me like YJ, with the entire Dollar Menu. They gave me a five-minute trailer six months before the drop, then a scene three months before the drop, and then a full trailer a month and change out.
I’m just asking you for a solid two-minute trailer. That’s it.

I rewatched RWBY and decided rewriting it klance version would spread the pain bc if I had to go through it so do the rest of you Pyrrha: Keith Jaune: Lance Cinder: Lotor Ruby: Allura (bc she tote would have silver eye powers) (I switch out “maiden” for “Knight” simply bc the lore states men can’t be maidens and since Lotor is the antagonist I made an adjustment to fit the lore)
---------
He didn’t want to do it. He didn’t want to leave a distressed, confused Lance behind, his stance screaming to follow Keith rather than turn around to the bigger fight at hand. But what could he do besides the right thing? Besides put his all into delaying the inevitable. At least give enough time for the survivors of beacon to escape. For Lance to make it home in one piece. Even as they were running out of the building, leaving Alfor to fend off against Lotor Keith knew he was no match to whatever Lotor had become. After taking in the Fall Knight’s he became indescribably powerful. Enough so to beat the headmaster, using his stolen power to continue the Grimm attack and wreak death and violence on the rest of the world.
He couldn’t stand on the sidelines. Not after being exposed to the existence of the knights and now Alfor’s most likely death.
If Lotor made it to the top of the tower, that means Alfor is dead. And they in turn will be dead if someone doesn’t go up and ceases his bloodshed.
Keith did not make his way in the top ranks of Beacon just to watch behind glass, knowing he could intervene. Knowing he could do what it takes to save the people he loves.
Even if it costs him his life.
"Alfor...” Lance whispers, watching up at what used to be the headmaster’s tower, shock and fear laced in his tone. “He...”
“He’s gone.” Keith finishes, morose. “Whatever Lotor is, whatever power he stole, it was enough to beat Alfor.”
Lance frowns. “Keith, What the hell is Lotor? What did Alfor mean by Fall Knight? There is no one on the planet with that power. And the only time we have heard of the Knights is in fairy tales--”
“That’s because it isn’t a fairy tale.” Keith says, looking at his device to summon his empty weapon carrier. “What you saw was someone who forcefully stole a power that is bigger than our aura. Something larger than the age old, lost ability of Dust.”
“Woah woah woah,” Lance waves his hands in the air. “You’re telling me HE can use DUST? Who made themself a Knight?”
Keith clenches his jaw, thinking back on the arrow lodged into the previous Fall Knight’s chest, their eyes wide and unseeing as their life force was drained to the last drop. Their body slumped, and while Keith prayed they would take a breath and hold the potential to beat Lotor, his hope dwindled as the body cooled.
“He didn’t make himself anything. He killed for it.” And he will kill again if nothing is done.
Lance focuses his gaze up, the sound of Lotor traveling to the top reverberating off the walls, a warning of the abilities he now wields. He killed for it. Destroyed the school and a life for what does not belong to him. The Grimm invading what is left of the school’s barriers, the murder of a fellow student, the carnage he inflicted upon innocent students and faculty, a trail of blood left behind their soaked footsteps. No one capable of so much disregard to the lives at stake should not be left with the storm roiling in their tainted veins.
“We need to get help.” Lance states, looking at Keith. “If Alfor was aware of the Knight’s existence, Coran may know someone who can rival their power.”
Keith doesn’t look at him. “There already is.”
“Great, then lets go find Coran so he can retrieve them.”
“It’s...Coran can’t do anything.”
Lance, confused by Keith’s contradicting words, turns his full attention to him. Keith is a few feet away, his eyes dull and void, a statue staring at the scenery displayed before them, frozen in time and thought. His indigo eyes, so bright and practically like starlight in a sea of black, is snuffed out by a force Lance cannot decipher. There is something Keith isn’t telling him. An emotion that goes beyond mourning Alfor and Beacon; a certain tilt of his brows that indicate Keith has a plan burrowing in the deepest part of his mind. It has only been present when Keith was talking to him a week ago, asking strange questions.
Asking Lance if he would still see him as a friend if he wasn’t the same person Lance knew; if his soul changed. It was a strange question to ask Lance. One he did not fully comprehend, for how can a soul change when the person obviously knows who they are?
He spoke as if he was going to be experimented on.
As if--
It hits Lance like a ton of bricks.
“No, no, no,” Lance shoves his body in front of Keith, getting very up close and personal with the surprised boy. “I know what you’re thinking, mullet. And you are not going to face Lotor.”
“Lance--”
“Did you not see how he came out of the fight unchanged?” Lance yells, motioning with one arm up towards the heavens. “He beat Alfor, a PROFESSIONAL HUNTER. Someone better than Allura, better than you.”
“Lance,” Keith whispers. “I know what I’m doing.”
“Obviously you don’t! You saw how powerful he is, you can’t go up there!”
“That isn’t for you to decide.”
“UM, yeah, it is as your friend who doesn’t want to add another number to the body count!” He took another step towards Keith, close enough he can smell the soot lingering on his hair from the two abandoning the fight for safety earlier. “We are leaving for actual help and that is final.”
Keith has been avoiding Lance’s look, not wishing to be pulled by those mesmerizing azures. He didn’t want to give in to his pained heart, afraid he would back out of his decision. But if he were to go through with it and Lance ended up right, he wants to have one last moment with Lance. One last look at the person he held most dear to him, even if he isn’t fully aware of just how much in those moments. Keith is about to sacrifice everything for the greater good, the least he could give himself is one last gift; one single second of pure love and unlatch those chains and shackles he had locked around his beating heart.
His pulse quickens, but he does not back down. He can already hear the empty locker nearing their destination, the hum of gears and fire being the only sound permeating the atmosphere if one listens carefully. He doesn’t have much time, internally saying sorry to Lance.
So he lifts his head to the boy opposite of him, the one he butted heads with their first semester. The goofy yet determined boy Keith trained, remembering their long night of sparring and wrestling to aid Lance in improving his sword mastery. The beautiful man he danced with at the ball, spinning him around among lights mirroring snow’s tears and a star’s explosion, leaving Keith breathless. The person who accepted Keith for who he is, looking past his elite history and deeming him not as some untouchable God, but just a student trying to get by and make a difference. Just like him.
Slowly, Keith gives him a sad smile and, with one swift movement, takes him by his shoulders and kisses him. It is not hard nor desperate, but a soft caress of his lips, a taste of what he can offer. Of what he could have offered, if worst comes to shove. Keith closes his eyes, basking in the gentleness as Lance--surprised but not disgusted--kisses him back. It is a small push, but enough to satisfy Keith.
They stay like that until the locker lands, that being Keith’s cue to let go and embrace his warrior status. His armored hand, lightly holding Lance to him, tightens and flings him in the locker. The boy’s eyes widen in shock, Keith forcing himself to shut and lock the metal container as soon as Lance is starstruck.
Lance bangs on the locker, his lithe frame throwing itself against the lock.
“What the--Keith!” He bangs again, frantically staring at Keith through the slits. “Keith don’t do this! Please don’t--”
“I’m so sorry,” Keith says, hushed and aching on the inside. His fingers are cold as they input the location for the locker to fly to, the stinging in his eyes growing almost unbearable. “Protect the others.”
He stands back, the fuel for the locker revving itself up again.
Lance continues to bang on the locker, cursing and screaming for Keith to stop.
“Keith I’m begging you, don’t do this!”
Keith just gazes up at him, the words on his lips dying as Lance registers what he is saying by a single, last look.
I love you. Goodbye.
And as Keith turns away and marches to the tower before him, the screams of Lance rings in his ears, his breaking heart stabbing Keith with its shards.
-------------------
“Lance, what is it? Where are you?” Allura asks, seeing her communicator go off and display Lance’s icon. Relief floods her, happy to see he is alright. Most likely Keith too, since they went off together.
“There is a cargo ship--”
“Allura you need to stop him!” Lance yells through the communicator, Allura frowning in confusion.
“Wait, Lance what do you mean? Who are you talking about?”
“Keith! It’s Keith! He--fucking shit--he is going to the tower to face Lotor. He doesn’t stand a chance, you need to stop him!”
The cool wave of calm freezes, ice crackling its way into her body. Keith. Lotor. The tower. No, this cannot be. Keith is an exceptional fighter, but Lotor is a whole different level. He hurt her friends--most likely hurt her father--all without breaking a sweat. What the hell is he thinking.
Shiro, who is next to her during this conversation, widens his eyes. “What?”
Allura puts on her best warrior voice, ignoring the horrible dread plaguing her mind. “Lance, I hear you. But where are you? Are you alright?”
“DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME!” Lance screams at the top of his lungs. “Go get Keith before he gets himself killed!”
Allura heard a hitch in his voice, a sob etching its way into existence before Lance lets out a frustrated scream and the connection goes dead. Allura yells Lance’s name, but already knows she has lost contact.
Now she must hurry, before it is too late.
--------------------
Keith couldn’t move. His vision is blurry, his body aching and his aura depleted into nothing. He gasped for air, the pain in his calve excruciating. His shield missed Lotor’s arrow, its dust form activating and went right through Keith’s attempt at blocking the attack. His body couldn’t handle more damage. His aura, always thriving because he was careful in its use, can no longer help him in stopping Lotor.
He met his match, and there is nothing Keith can do about it.
Lotor, bathing in his victory, smiles to himself and forms a bow and arrow, taking aim at Keith’s heart.
“Any last words, Champion?”
Keith doesn’t know why, but the words came out without a thought. He levels his eyes with navy blue, glaring up at the threatening figure in defiance. Though he may be  dead man, he knows one thing: fate does not favor the wicked.
“Tell me. Do you believe in destiny?”
Lotor grew serious.
“Yes.”
With that, he lets go of his prepped arrow, the sharp, minuscule dagger piercing Keith’s chest. Keith’s eyes grew big, the ache bursting into white hot agony as his insides are engrossed in unseen fire. He gasps and tries to form words, tries to yell out curses—anything really—but all he can utter is a choke before he gives in to his fatal wound, his vision dissolving into darkness. He is so far gone he cannot even feel his body be dissolved into dust, Lotor’s hand a kiss of death as he slowly scatters to the wind.
His last thought is of Lance, and how he will never be able to dance with him again.

I was talking to friends the other day about fancharacters (kicked off by this post by my friend @leonawriter)- that is to say, original characters inserted into a canon universe via fanwork and specifically there to interact more with canon characters than with other fancharacters- and when the only real litmus set to them is “are they a Mary Sue?” that’s not very helpful.
I think the criticism of “Mary Sue” is fundamentally misguided, not only for its lurking misogynistic attitudes (female characters are not allowed to be special or if they are special they have to work, and suffer, twice as hard as the male characters to “justify” their specialness) but also because the character being special is not the problem.
What I would consider one of the most important things about a fancharacter is niche.
All characters in a story have a reason they’re put in the story. They explore something about the larger setting, they contribute something to their allies, they change the plot somehow. They have friends, enemies, opinions, interests.
If you’re adding a character to an existing group, look at the group, say, “what do they need here, or would benefit from, that they don’t have?”
For example, in VLD, if you consider the Generals don’t really have prior-continuity counterparts, they’re just successfully integrated OCs. Many of their niches, they fill just by being interesting complex characters- they have different personalities, history, and connections, and meaningfully play off of each other.
But they also serve a larger storytelling niche. The first obvious one is that VLD as an adaptation distances Lotor from Zarkon and Haggar, and the main empire. Unless you want to make an antagonist talk to themselves needlessly much, it’s good to give them allies to diversify their situations and how they operate, and also give them ways to assert their presence without being personally in attendance. VLD could have included Cossack, Mogor, Merla, or Maahox from prior continuities- but they chose instead to create original characters to fill that void (and I, for one, am grateful)
Furthermore, Lotor has in prior continuities been set up as a counterpart to the Black Paladin (usually Keith)- but when he’s operating in that role, he’s never in the past had four other subordinates to actually complete the unit and drive the “anti-Voltron” symbolism home.
So this is the obvious tidy storytelling niche for the generals: the writers of VLD basically went “so if Lotor’s a dark analogue to the Black Paladin, where’s his Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow paladins? Black is a leader, a head, so who are his arms and legs?”
Because of this, the generals don’t “feel” like people expect OCs to, because they’re nicely integrated. Their personalities slot together nicely because they’re rooted in the same five-man team mold that’s so popular and effective (There’s a reason it’s a pain in the butt to actually integrate a sixth character into a five-man team)
Conversely, I would cite the character Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X as an example of not doing it right. Not because Chris is a bad character at all- but he’s been dealt a bad hand. Because he’s supposed to be a major character, but both personality-wise, story-wise, and in terms of capabilities, he’s effectively a second Tails. And since Tails is the more beloved legacy character everyone’s familiar with, the writers made Tails better at everything Chris is trying to do- so Chris’s victories feel arbitrary and his role feels tacked on.
This is ameliorated in earlier episodes when Chris has more of a role as Sonic’s liaison to the human world, but the more that becomes unnecessary (he doesn’t need anyone to hide him) the more, tragically, Chris himself feels unnecessary. And again, I don’t say that because I hate the character- it’s because as much as you can love a character, they still need to have something meaningful they’re bringing to the plot.
Another way this can be important is that your characters’ backstories or settings they’re connected to shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. If they’re from somewhere nobody’s heard of, anchor this setting to the plot in other ways. Make it important- and this is contrary to a lot of popular “anti-Mary Sue” advice I saw before.
Successful integration of a new character into a narrative results in the fact that your audience will generally, immediately care about them. Here’s what I think is a really successful example of that by @joleanart. So I’ve never seen these five Altean OCs. All I have on them is this one set of pictures.
Niche established: they’re people Allura knew, good friends of hers. This is a canon niche that’s lying open: we know that Allura lost people, we know that a gregarious person like her would have good friends. We know, as the artist points out, there was a battle for Altea, that it fought back against the empire, that they were more than just defenseless victims who languished and died.
Integrating threads: These are specific people, not just random strangers. They have connections to people we already care about. Seeing these people in what we know are their final moments, their losing battle, putting their faith in the idea of Altea, in Allura specifically- emphasizes Allura’s canon role as a beacon of hope in the face of grief and despair.
While it overlaps with Alfor’s sacrifice for Allura’s welfare, it doesn’t diminish, but rather, adds to it, enriches and explores it. They may not have been there when Alfor put Allura in stasis and launched Coran with the castleship, but they were the people outside fighting on the front lines giving them the time to do that. Alfor was Allura’s beloved father, but he wasn’t the only person that loved her and he wasn’t the only person that died for her that day.
Differentiation and personality: some of them are sad, some resigned, some defiant. Some are speaking to more distant ideals, other make it personal. Their situations, even as little as we see them, are different and how they respond to them are different.
The result of it all together? I get really invested in these guys really fast. With only the tiny scrap of “this was the battle for Altea, as illustrated by good friends of Allura’s” I’m not just emotionally moved, but now the meta gears in my brain are turning, grabbing onto this for how much it enriches the narrative- but who were these people specifically, what are the things Allura shared with them- she probably thinks about them, remembers them going forwards. Are there qualities they have that she sees in the paladins, and how does she feel about that?
This is a really successful emotional suckerpunch. With very minimal “lore”, and five characters at once, this artist has very successfully integrated and landed that emotional connection and they did so because they started really effectively from “so, hey, this canon character logically had to have known people during this phase in her life, and because of how canon ended up... we know she lost them. What did that look like? What was their story, the one we didn’t follow but we kind of know how it ended?”

that's why it'd be funny. everyone would be so confused
i'm considering adding [my au, havenplace] mettaton as canon lore. just because it'd be hilarious to see how characters from outside my au react to that fact
-void keith
Pff they’d all be so confused. All the repeating names made things difficult for a while
