okay so I was watching a video about videos and decided to write about writing (specifically, fanfic)

Typically I don't share my thoughts on fandom as a subculture and how it's changed because I don't have the stomach for the kind of things that can happen when one posts their opinions on social media. But I'm gonna give it a go today because I watched this:

You don't have to watch it, I'll tell you the thing that got me: it was about how on YouTube, people are likely to be fans of specific channels, and if you subscribe to one, you could probably, if asked, discuss what you like about that channel/creator with others. But the way TikTok's feed works (turning you into a passive consumer of an endless stream of short videos), it's more difficult to differentiate who the creators are, even when you subscribe to them. You're more likely to just say, "I'm a fan of TikTok" (...or "I'm addicted to TikTok"). This is evidenced by the fact that at a recent VidCon, TikTokers who had millions of views and hundreds of thousands of subscribers faced empty lines at the meet-and-greets, because their content was just part of a blur of content their subscribers passively put their eyeballs on every day.

And I had a thought: Has AO3 done this for fanfic? Of course AO3's content cannot be passively consumed; you have to enter search terms and use filters to find what you're looking for. But once you have entered such a search, you could well be faced with thousands of results, which you begin consuming by opening tab after tab after tab. If you were not in fandom before 2012, I cannot stress how ludicrous this amount of fanfiction is. Before AO3, unless you were in a MASSIVE fandom (like HP or LOTR), you eagerly awaited the arrival of new fics because there just weren't that many -- and even if you were in a massive fandom, if you shipped one of the less popular pairings (or preferred Gen), you still could not necessarily count on even one new fic a day that was to your tastes.

And in those days when fics were fewer and farther between, and when fandoms were more siloed, you got to know fanfic authors. You recognized their styles. When someone posted a new fic, you were excited because you knew what you could expect based on what you already enjoyed about that author's talents and inclinations. In a small fandom I was in long ago, where only about ten people wrote fic, we once sat around and brainstormed which popular music act's vibe corresponded with which each author's style! (I was The Clash.)

Compare that to now, where many readers in fandom have the opportunity to just click-read-click-read-click-read, not just as a reward at the end of a long day, but on the bus or anywhere. I don't think it's a coincidence that fics get fewer comments than they used to, and there's far less discussion of individual authors. There's no incentive to linger on something even if you enjoyed it, when the next fic is waiting in another tab.

Now perhaps it's better that the structure of fanfic culture has changed such that we have less potential for BNF drama. But it also means that whenever I see newcomers to a fandom asking for recs, most of the responses are "Have you read [the fic with the most kudos and comments on AO3]?" It's not just that this response is a bit superfluous, as the newcomer has probably already sorted the AO3 results by kudos/comments -- to me it also indicates that folks get so much fanfic from The Fanfic Website and so little community from The De Facto Fandom Platforms that it becomes difficult to remember individual fics, what you enjoyed about them, or how an individual author's style might make them a better match for a certain reader. (Yes, I am aware that AO3 has histories/bookmarks for people to refer back to, but when one accumulates 1000 bookmarks and then someone asks for a rec, most likely the bookmark holder is only going to remember, off the top of their head, That One Crazy Outlier Fic That The Entire Fandom Lost Their Shit About Seven Years Ago.)

I dunno, this is all I got in the way of thoughts. I'm not saying I want to go back to the way things were 10 or 20 years ago, but I sure do wish I could a-la-carte it a little, you know?

can’t speak for what his content/personality was like after 2013 because i had completely dropped him by then for associating with people who made me really uncomfortable (and were later proved to be the worst) but from 2011-2012 he was also a closeted emo nerd who liked studio ghibli and video games so it wasn’t the furthest leap from one to the other. in 2012 joey was a daily vlogger and in one of his vidcon vlogs he went out to lunch with dan, phil, and cat since joey and cat were friends and dan, phil, and cat were friends and that was my initial introduction to them. then a year later i came across a phan edit on youtube that made my heart warm so i looked into their channels and have been watching consistently ever since.

How'd you get into phan?

The tl;dr is that i 2012 I saw a Dan video and thought it was hilarious, so I watched his livestreams. I didn't like his sense of humor and thought he was homophobic af so I just wrote him (and Phil) off until 2015. In my mind they were just like Caspar and Joe, straight roomies baiting their relationship for content because they found it funny/profitable.

In 2015, I kept seeing them in the background of people's vlogs at Vidcon, since I watched a lot of other vloggers at that point. Somehow they must have just kind of incepted themselves into my head because I had a dream about them cuddling? So the next day I googled them to see what they were up to and I came across the Guru Gossiper threads about them. I read those from page one to what was then current day, then I found the phan timeline and read it start to finish.

Then I decided I'd actually watch some of their content, and my fate was sealed.

Why shouldn’t the green brothers be in charge of teens

At the end of the 00s/start of the 2010s, the Green Brothers set up a record label called Don't Forget to Be Awesome, also known as DFTBA. At the time they also ran events such as VidCon.

In 2012, it came out that a number of the "content creators" involved with one or other event (or both) had been involved in sexual abuse/inappropriate relationships with minors or both. I have a long post about this which I'll try to find and reblog, because interestingly, it seems like since making that post, some of the information has been removed from Wiki and other sources.

One of the most serious of these was Mike Lombardo, who was exchanging sexual pictures with underage fans, and ultimately spent 5 years in prison. Mike didn't just release music via DFTBA, he was friends, or at least friendly with the Green Brothers, especially Hank. A lot of the evidence for this has been erased from the internet, but some of it still exists- there's some stuff on this redit thread if you are willing to scroll through all the innocent until proven guilty stuff: https://www.reddit.com/r/nerdfighters/comments/puuf8/mike_lombardo_under_fbi_investigation_for_child/

Another is Tom Milson, who had a relationship with a teenager which began when she was 15, and he was 21. When the relationship ended, the girl stated that he was emotionally abusive and sexually manipulative. Again, Tom Milson wasn't just signed to the label, he was close to the vlog brothers, and Hank actually met the teen in question (see this link: https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/tom-milsom-underage-sex-scandal/). He says he wasn't aware they were in a relationship, but he was quite happy for a teenage girl to be hanging out "backstage" with adult men at an event he organised because she was "cool".

There are also other people associated with the label such as Alex Day, Ed Blant etc who were in abusive relationships with adult female fans at the time when some of this came out.

These aren't the only incidents, as I say I'll try and find the post I wrote about this a while back- but the point is that the Green brothers created a platform which allowed men to abuse (mostly younger, and in some cases underage) women and girls. They also ran events like VidCon where some of this abuse took place, it's very clear they had no real concept of duty of care, or any desire to protect young female fans at these events.

Now, people will argue/debate the whole thing- and I'm not saying the Green brothers 100% knew what was going on (although I sort of think they must have been turning a deliberate blind eye to these things) but as someone who teaches this age group in the UK, part of my duty is to keep them safe and keep an eye out for e.g. relationships that may be inappropriate or abusive so we can help and support the people involved.

I think, through their past actions, at best the Green brothers have shown themselves to be dangerously oblivious, and I also think it's very clear they HATE this being brought up, and then minimise it (about the time Paper Towns, or whatever it is came out a lot of this 100% disappeared from the internet too).

At the time, they paid lip service to teaching people about consent, but they are the last people who should be teaching anyone about anything, because as far as I'm aware they have NEVER accepted their own culpability about these things, and that they created an environment where this abuse was possible.

So yeah, I don't think they'd be very suited to being high school teachers, no matter how "cool" they might seem.

this was my whole world for my entire hs existence and into my early college years. half of the shows listed here stems from my first love of the ensemble cast, their interwoven yet clandestine storylines, and the mystery box. at my first sdcc, half of the cast was present when they debuted p1 of the series finale (you’d think i was dead the whole time fksfsk;lv)

yes, i faithfully followed jj abrams into another insane show. i think it actually altered my brain chemistry, rewired something in me, devoured a piece of me. once LOST was over and Fringe brought in the alternate universe, i dove in head first and never resurfaced

i think it was technically winter 2010 when i started binging this show because s6 was my first time catching it live (was young and naïve, i caught it on bbca lol) ive been on hellsite for almost two years at the time and fully became a fandom blog, so it was inevitable i would love this series. i think it was the first show i made gifs/edits for???

a show about eight children than i gave birth to, that i raised on my own, that i will defend on my death bed and beyond??? that show sense8?? yes that show sense8. fun fact, when they did the screening of the finale in Chicago, the cast ended up sitting three rows behind me in the theater and i could hear them talking in between scenes the entire evening. wish i could bottle that feeling up

viii. Bad Buddy (2021-2022)

and we finally made it to the current decade! its nov 2021, im fresh off leaving my previous job and still getting situated in my new position, yet this show was a siren calling to me in the dark mist of my life. i ended up saving the binge watching for the week of my bday and my whole life shifted again. it must have been so alarming on the outside, seeing me go from making 1-2 edits a month to 1-2 edits a day for almost THREE MONTHS. the fact that i still cont to avg two edits/week since then... oy lol

i would absolutely love for the missus to be besties with Dan and Phil.... and that 2012 interview with One Direction is one of the first times Harry and D&P meet properly and afterwards they all hang out and Harry is just so happy because he has his boys and his girl has hers. And as the years go by, they buy apartments and houses not too far from each other, and when the babies are born, DnP are named as Godparents and it's just such a humble friendship group. (Even if Harry gets the piss ripped out of him when the missus jokes around with DnP)

the idea of yn being a part of the 'british youtuber' gang is something i absolutely love...

going to vidcon and all of those youtuber meet-ups in america or in london, going on big trips away with a large number of them, being one of the only ones who knew about zoella and alfie being in a relationship, collab-ing with marcus butler or caspar lee, doing silly challenges with joe sugg, doing chatty videos with louise pentland, and her being best friends dan and phil and always appearing in some of their videos.

yn would be one of the prime british youtubers back in the day.

and there's always been such a bond between her and dan and phil; they were her first youtuber best friends when she came onto the scene, they were there to guide her and help her when she needed it, she could always go to them for ideas and they were never against appearing in her videos to help her gain some clout and some popularity as she created her own youtuber personality. and they'd be the only two youtubers, from back in the day, that she would see a lot more of than others.

and she'd never fall shy on showing her affection towards one direction - in particular of harry so it makes everyone feel so happy when their relationship comes to light of the public eye and people are so supportive and loving towards the two of them. and that's why everyone could relate to her. and dan and phil would always joke around with her about how she'd get to be with him and marry him and have his babies and have a whole life with him - not knowing that that was how her life would actually unfold in the future. x

Hank and John have affected my life in an extremely positive way.

I found them when I was a 6th grader (back in 2006) thanks to a friend of mine, and instantly I was hooked.

I watched every video of Brotherhood 2.0 and I personally feel like Hank and John were teaching me and guiding me as I grew up.

I’m almost 20 now, and the Vlogbrothers and Nerdfighters have turned me into the young adult I am today. I feel well informed, intelligent, and supported by a community. I feel like I belong. (I first met Hank and John on the TFiOS tour in San Francisco and I was lucky enough to go to Vidcon 2012 and see them again and meet the other YouTubers who have inspired me since I was little.)

Hank and John let me know that I wasn’t alone in the struggles of growing up.

That the fear and uncertainty I felt was not going to defeat me.

More than once I have looked to the Vlogbrothers as leaders and inspiration to take action or try something new.

They have helped me in my school work and my personal life and have given me laughter and joy when I needed it most. I still have a long way ahead of me, but with the Vlogbrothers as role models and the Nerdfighter community by my side I know that I will be able to take on any problem I may come across.

I know I will be able to succeed- Hank and John taught me that.
