I was watching an episode of 'victorian pharmacy' and they grind up dried earthworms to make worm oil.
They mention they didn't dry the worms themselves. It's unclear if they bought it or if it's something the museum they are in had. That means that somewhere out there, in space or time, there's a person whose job involves drying earthworms for later use

haunted apothecary from the 1800s, supposedly a serial killer who used to own this shop would target pregnant women to practice c sections. he murdered the mother and child after the operation was complete even if it was successful.
lots of incredibly cool things in here, even saw love potions and different types of poisons that were used for treatment

Do you write fem readers?!? 😭 If so can you write some head cannons about the Cullens with a goth s/o
i proudly write for all readers, nonny! and I'm gonna assume this about about trad!goth, but I'll try and make sure this applies to most goth subcultures!
Cullen Clan x Goth!Fem!S/O
Tumblr media
Carlisle Cullen
He's confused but supportive. Back in his day, the term 'goth' only applied to the people who sacked Rome, which he'll remind you of regularly, especially if you're visiting the Volturi (who will also assume that you are directly connected to the ancient Goths, and would fear you as a result).
He'd be interested in your genealogy, because he thinks you're connection to the goth style can't be mere coincidence or personal choice, and it wouldn't be difficult to find out either, all he'd have to do is check if you have any Germanic ancestry from the last 2000 years.
Tumblr media
Esme Cullen
If you're happy and comfortable, she's happy and comfortable. While it probably isn't her style personally, she's quick to see the benefits. For instance, black is a very easy colour to maintain, particularly with regards to cleaning.
Her only concern is getting you clothes other than black so that you can have something to wear to events that may require specific colours, like if you two are guests at a wedding (she wouldn't want you wearing black as it's bad luck for the couple).
Tumblr media
Edward Cullen
Edward himself is basically a diet-corporate goth, so dating you will probably help him develop his own sense of comfort in the style.
The two of you are regularly seen brooding in the Forks CVS, loitering around the hair dye section, silently terrifying all of the elderly people waiting at the pharmacy.
Edward is likely already very familiar with goth music, has absolutely been to some Bauhaus concerts in his time, and probably has a respectable collection of gothic rock records in his room.
Tumblr media
Rosalie Hale
It'll be like a Barbie/Oppenheimer-esque clash in aesthetics. I personally see Rosalie with a very Y2K aesthetic, so the two of you walking down the street together might turn some heads.
That doesn't mean that she isn't fully supportive of your style though, and appreciates the philosophy of the aesthetic, how it's a style built on defying expectations of conformity and obedience. In her short life, all Rosalie knew was to dress properly, smile, be open, happy, a willing host, an amusing guest. In death, she's proud to be herself, and even prouder to be with someone so comfortable with dressing exactly how they want, regardless of what others might think.
Tumblr media
Emmett Cullen
You dress scary and Emmett loves it. He has regularly compared you to a venomous snake, your black clothes and aggressive makeup mean that almost everyone in Forks steers clear of you. But not Emmett, he's never had the survival instincts to stay away from things that could kill him, in fact, your "unapproachable" style only drew him in more.
Absolutely loves wandering around Forks with you, even if you aren't particularly doing anything. He thinks it's hilarious that some people cross the street to avoid you, it's like having 'scary dog' privileges.
Tumblr media
Alice Cullen
She'd seen you in her visions for some time, but she almost didn't recognise you when you started dressing strangely and wearing heavy makeup. At first, it disturbed her, you looked like the sleep-paralysis demons that used to haunt her in the asylum.
Once she gets the chance to meet you in real life, that fear quickly subsides. Through your relationship, Alice learns how much of a safe space goth society can be, and that she can rely on other goths to not be judgemental towards her like so many others are.
Tumblr media
Jasper Hale
Greatly appreciates the Victorian-era elements that are incorporated into your clothes, it helps him feel less old. You'll make his day if you show any interest in his clothes and jewellery that he had in life, particularly the more morbid pieces (such as the ring made out of his mother's hair).
If you're looking particularly historical, he'll love to get in his original clothes from when he was alive (except the ""uniform"" that shan't be mentioned), and stroll about Forks with you, arm in arm, like a true Southern gentleman.

The Second Mate
Also on AO3
Chapter 1
Something was going to happen today.
She wasn’t sure how or when or if, but something inside her screamed imminence. Of course, it could be her anxiety that she was taking a pharmacy’s worth of meds for; Nevertheless, something felt off about today.
It was first day of 12th Grade in a new school in a new town, and after looking around a bit she was sure she was the only immigrant there. She was, however, used to being the outsider. She was a 200-pound-something, Foreign nutjob with mental illnesses that would petrify a small Victorian child. ADHD and Anxiety was pretty common to be fair but she was pretty sure Psychosis wasn’t.
She went through her morning routine as usual. It was more of a ritual than a routine at this point. It had to get done otherwise something bad would happen. She started her routine by doing her skincare routine. Face wash first, then toner, then serum, moisturizer and SPF. She had to look her best at all times otherwise… well there was no otherwise. She had to look perfect. She continued with brushing her hair and tying it into a neat ponytail. She then brushed her teeth for exactly 60 seconds then followed up with mouthwash for 30 seconds.
After finishing her ‘ritual’ she left her little en-suite and went back  into her cozy little bedroom. She decided on a beautiful dress with tiny pink flowers on it. She forwent a bra as she usually did (they were evil boob prisons) and put on her white frilly socks. She put on a pair of gorgeous but fake pearl earrings and necklace and went downstairs to leave the house.
“You’re going to school, not a fashion show,” greeted her mother. She ignored her as always and went out the door after picking up her backpack, which was pink of of course, and wearing her her shoes. It was time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Are you sure we’re meeting her today?” Asked Emmet, who was excited but suspicious he would finally be meeting his second mate after waiting nearly 70 years. Rosalie, on the other hand, was anything but excited. She did not like the thought of sharing her only mate to a puny little human girl. She frowned.
“Yes! Stop hounding me, I saw it happen, you’ll meet her today!” Alice being Alice didn’t really mind sharing hers. She was actually kind of excited too.
“Are you sure?”
“YES, EMMET!”
Jasper, however, wasn’t sure what to expect today. He too had waited for nearly 70 years for his second mate alas he was more apprehensive then excited. He was scared. She was human and humans were fragile little things. What if he broke your hand while trying to hold it, or finally broke his streak and ate you?
“You’ll be fine” declared Edward. The little asshole couldn’t help listening his  thoughts.
Jasper ignored his brother and gave a big sigh. He followed the rest of his siblings to their cars that would be taking them to school today; Rosalie’s red Cadillac and Edward’s silver Volvo.
The ride to school was terrible. Though at least Emmet was happy. Jasper could feel his giddiness. He kept hounding Alice questions about their mate except he didn’t allow her to answer any of them.
“How does she look like?”
“Is she short, or tall?”
“Is she a blonde or a brunette?”
“Will she like us?”
“Do you think I’m her type?”
“When will we meet her again?”
 “SHUT UP, EMMET!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She was lucky she lived only about 30 minutes away from school. Americans would probably think that an absurd amount but where she was from it was a perfectly acceptable distance.
She wiped the sweat off her face and stared at Forks Highschool. It was definitely one of the smaller schools she’d went to. As she was walking into the building to find the secretary she was stopped by a small girl.
“Hi! You must be the new girl! We’ve been expecting you for ages!”
Her cheeks blushed a soft pink. She didn’t know she’d be this popular already.
“Hi, umm yeah this is she- I mean I am her.” Fuck, she was awkward. Come on sertraline, do your job!
Alice giggled, Jasper’s mate was cute. “I’m Alice, and these are my siblings.”
Just as she was about to wonder where they were, four beautiful pale strangers appeared before her. Her heart was fluttering like crazy, the blond and the brunet guys were HOT.
Alice went on to introduce Edward, who gave her a small smile, then Rosalie, who had already decided to hate her and answered with a glare. The giant brunet left Rosalie’s side to her dismay and extended his hand and gave a charming smile: “I’m Emmett, we’ve been expecting you.” Just as she was about to answer Emmett she was interrupted by the tall blond guy. Well, his sudden departure.
Her heart was palpitating, what had she done? She had just met them she could not have possibly offended them already, could she?
“Jasper is just anxious, nothing to worry about.” Edward had heard her thoughts and decided to take pity on her.
“Oh, okay…” He answered her thoughts as if she spoke them out loud, was she that obvious? Alice meanwhile had linked their arms together and was dragging her to the school. “You have AP Gov first period, let me take you!”
Wow, how did Alice know what her first period was? She decided she would not be friends with the beautiful pale siblings. They were weird and they overwhelmed her senses. She removed her arm from Alice. “Uh, I’ll just have to go to administration before class. You can go ahead, don’t miss class for me.” She didn’t care if Alice and the beautiful pale siblings following behind her missed their classes; she just did NOT want to be near them anymore.
Rosalie suddenly huffed and left their side, which led Emmet to follow behind her after giving her a wink and an excited smile. Edward gave a sigh of exhaustion and left after giving them a small wave. She was alone with Alice now.
“No worries! I’m sure Mr. Webster will understand when I tell him I was helping the new girl!” Her smile never left her face. It creeped her out to no end.
Alice took her arm without even allowing her to give a reply and dragged her to what she thought was administration. She had a feeling she could not escape Alice, nor the other siblings.

Rating victorian era remedies based on how much I think Oliver Quick would enjoy them.
Blood letting 9/10
Hot, sexy, innovating, fun, thrilling, erotic, game-changing, and boner inducing. Cutting into supple flesh and seeing the blood slowly bleed out of them. Very sexy, Oliver would get absolutely bricked up over getting to slice up his patients, licking the wound, and scars would be an extra bonus for this procedure.
Leeches 8/10
Similar to blood letting but with a little extra step involving leeches. Fun to look at the leech getting fatter and fatter as they drain the blood. Not as fun and also a hassle to buy and store all the leeches for this procedure. You get to pull the leeches off and see a bruised mark, like opening a wrapped present. Oliver enjoys this, but obviously not as much as blood letting.
Opium 7/10
Gives you a high like you wouldn't believe, down side is that it is incredibly addictive. If he was a doctor he would absolutely love prescribing it to his patients because it makes them more pliable, agreeable, and relaxed. Oliver would also occasionally get high of his own supply when he needs to relax, he will also convince his friend Felix to try smoking opium with him because he likes how uninhibited, soft and gooey it makes Felix becomes.
Vibrators 6/10
A great cure for "Hysteria", Oliver recommends this to all his female (and some male) friends. He prefers his cures the more traditional way with fingers and hands (and mouth), but when more stimulation is needed, he doesn't shy away from mechanical help.
Cocaine 5/10
He likes them a normal amount, it is the tired and true work horse of the pharmacy. Perscribed for every thing from coughs to colds to headaches. A fun little drug but nothing too exciting for him.
Chloroform 5/10
They pass out, not much fun unless you enjoy an unconscious body (and Oliver can enjoy that occasionally). Nice for annoying people who talk too much, perscribed for when you need quite alone time.
Vomiting 3/10
Messy messy messy, Oliver is a messy boy who enjoys bodyfluids, but inducing vomiting is such a hassel. It spews everywhere and smells putrid, can be occasionally sexy if they have a nice vomiting face. The aftercare is nice because you get to pamper them with soft food and liquids, but is not quite worth all the trouble.
Fresh air 1/10
A trip to the sea side for fresh air is nothing a little absinthe, and opium can't cure.
Lobotomies 10/10
Fun for the whole family! Scrambling someone's brain for fun and for profit! Surgery can be oh so sexy. Especially when they squirm and resist.

Disability and Worldbuilding
I will state you can't change the actual disability, though you could theoretically make up ones. This isn't going to be one of those "Oh let's play roulette and give your characters a disability you've never heard of before". This is a short post trying to ask you to look at how disability is thought of and treated in your society and maybe changing the longtime European default settings to one that could look at disability on a cultural level.
Europe's ideas of Disability over time
There's some loose thought that Druids were semi-Shamanistic and if that was so a few things are true: Higher likelihood of acceptance of LGBTQIA, though this was likely erased by later Christian Missionaries, but some stories do survive that indicate this might be true. Of course LGBTQIA isn't a disability, but putting it out there that Druids likely accepted it from Historical thinking.
But also it's likely that disabilities, particularly congenital, etc weren't regarded the same as they were later.
Mental health disabilities were likely? treated as a cause of celebration because those people were closer to understanding the divine. Many Shamanistic religions are like that.
Then Romans came, and Romans, unlike the "sanitized" version of them were not anti-sex, homosexuality, but there is evidence that there was some "kill people with disabilities" mentality probably leftover from the Greeks. (Baby death by exposure for having a disability).
This belief system probably synchronized with Christianity in Europe, and thus by the time you get to Shakespeare in the 1500's, etc, it was commonly thought that if you had a physical or mental "deformity" (language of the time period) that it was punishment from God. This is why in much of the plays of the time period physical disability comes at the heels of a moral failing in plays. If you notice, this is a more extreme version of the previous. But the justifications have changed and the culture has changed with it.
(Lucy Worsley goes over this when she talks about Shakespeare and Richard the III—often disability was feared, mocked, and hated.)
Your arm got chopped off in battle and somehow despite the terrible medicine, you survived, well the Church would tell you, "You know what? God willed it because you were evil."
TT Ultimate in blame the victim?
Of course with the advent of science, some of this started to change, but was still prevalent until the late Victorian era where it changed. (You can watch the doc Victorian Pharmacy to get an idea of when the Humour system finally died, etc.) But then Eugenics kinda took over the mantle of what had been put in earlier with a more extreme version and justification to go after LGBTQIA, (Mostly the first 4 letters, to be honest) They used Wallace and Darwin's work (unfortunately it got Darwin's Grandson) to argue against disability.
But then this history also attacks ND identity too.
But do you need to write an antagonism towards disability? Couldn't you expand on the supposed Druid version and play that up?
You do not have to do the whole "Punishment from God" antagonism. And it may be inconsistent as well. Some disabilities are more liked than others. Finding and asking about the justifications would make this a good bit of world building to work on.

About Weeping Clown's Deduction 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Acid attacks were a regular if not common occurrence in 19th century Britain, back then known as vitriol throwing, after oil of vitriol, the common name for strong sulphuric acid, an oily liquid heavier than water which was colorless when entirely pure. Nitric acid was also common, which could also be a colorless liquid. Both had a number of legitimate uses.
Tumblr media
Acids were mass-manufactured, easily available (and cheap), and generally unregulated until the early twentieth century.
Acid attacks were quite frequent between the 1850s and 1899. Common motivations included personal conflict, jealousy, revenge, etc… Almost without exception, it was thrown at the head, neck, and upper body, sometimes directly in the face.
Tumblr media
Didn't become a felony to burn, main, disfigure, or disable anyone with a corrosive fluid or destructive substance, or attempt to do so, until the Offences Against Person Act of 1861.
The severity of the damage depends on the concentration of the acid and the time before the acid is thoroughly washed off with water or neutralized with a neutralizing agent.
It mutilated and maimed victims by destroying skin and supporting tissues; its corrosive action could liquefy muscle and dissolve bone. It combined with water in organic matter, generating a considerable amount of heat, to which the resulting damage was in part due—a charring effect that caused noticeable blackening. If the acid got into the eyes it caused blindness. If the injuries were extensive victims could be permanently disabled; those who recovered were likely to be badly disfigured, with no hope of regaining a semblance of their former appearance prior to the advent of plastic surgery.
In 1930 a horrified witness described how a victim’s skin sizzled and moved as the acid acted.
Although vitriol throwing was certainly painful, it was rarely fatal (poisoning/ingestion is different).
Vitriol throwing continued until the Second World War, after which it became much less frequent. The Pharmacy and Poisons Act of 1933 restricted the sale of strong acid, so weaker corrosive fluids were used.
---
As for the lead paint:
Many cosmetics back in the day contained a variety of chemicals, including ammonia, mercury, opium, arsenic, and lead.
Tumblr media
People commonly used lead-based makeup on their skin to look paler, especially upper class white women who chased even whiter skin due to victorian beauty ideals, to show how their privilege never left them working in the sun.
Tumblr media
The corrosive nature of lead would leave your skin damaged and in far worse shape after every use, requiring you to use more and more to cover up its effects.
Side effects of lead poisoning, besides creating wounds and scars, include severe headaches, nerve illnesses, memory loss, pain and numbness, and if ingested in large enough quantities, will cause paralysis and death. In children, it also affected their body development and neurological issues.
These thick layers of make-up cracked like porcelain if a woman was too expressive.

Victorians believed that arsenic in cosmetics can enhance the pale and delicate look that was fashionable in that period.
The Victorian era valued white skin as a sign of wealth and status: women of the upper class wanted to look even paler, as if they never had to work under the sun.
“It was all about how to make your skin more translucent,”
explains Alexis Karl, an expert on Victorian cosmetics and a perfume maker.
Makeup in the 1800s had two main trends: “natural” and “painted.” The “natural” look aimed to emulate the “English Rose”; a virtuous and lovely woman, but Karl points out “it was understood that there was a lot of artifice going on.” The “painted” look was more daring; these women did not conceal their use of makeup or their desire to be beautiful.

Harper’s Bazaar had been publishing a column “The Ugly Girl Papers: Or, Hints for the Toilet.” It was written by a Mrs. S.D. Powers, a beauty expert of the time, and became so popular that it was re-published in 1874 as an anthology. The “Ugly Girl Papers” has the tone of a wise aunt with endless advice on how to solve your beauty woes.
Tumblr media
An 1898 advertisement for Dr. Campbell’s Safe Arsenic Complexion Wafers
To get this near-death look, women would squeeze a few drops citrus juice or perfume into their eyes, or reach for some belladonna drops, which lasted longer, but also caused blindness. Pale skin was encouraged with veils, gloves and parasols, but could also be bought: Sears & Roebuck sold a popular product called Dr. Rose’s Arsenic Complexion Wafers, which were just that–little white chalk wafers filled with arsenic for delicate nibbling. They were specifically advertised as “perfectly harmless.”
Arsenic, a natural metalloid found in the earth’s crust, is an extremely toxic compound that can be tolerated for a time when eaten in small amounts (and has occasionally been used in medicine). Long-term exposure, however, is extremely unpleasant: nervous system and kidney damage, hair loss, conjunctivitis and growths called arsenical keratoses plague the body along with, yes, vitiligo, which causes pigment loss in the skin. Arsenic, which became addictive as a person’s tolerance built, was used in as many forms as possible.
Lola Montez, a Victorian actress and traveling beauty writer, wrote in her book The Arts of Beauty about how women in Bohemia (now a part of the Czech Republic) regularly bathed in arsenic springs, “which gave their skins a transparent whiteness.” She also warned of the price: “once they habituate themselves to the practice, they are obliged to keep it up the rest of their days, or death would speedily follow.”
Though beauty-related deaths were not always reported as arsenic poisoning, it wasn’t that Victorian women didn’t know arsenic was toxic or addictive. It was not uncommon for it to be used as a poison by murderesses of the era, and by the late 1800s arsenic was known to be a dangerous ingredient when used in dyes and wallpaper. The use of arsenic in small quantities for skin lightening was considered so effective that it continued for decades.
