La Historia del VHS o Video Home System

Fue desarrollado en la década de los `70 por la empresa JVC y fue lanzado al mercado en 1973 por Matsushita (Panasonic) para competir con el entonces único sistema doméstico del mercado, el Betamax de Sony.

Gracias a las alianzas que logró JVC con las distribuidoras cinematográficas (entre ellas Paramount y Disney) que hizo que se popularice rápidamente logran posicionarse en el mercado hogareño con mucha facilidad. Eso hizo que en 1988 Sony admitiera la derrota y anunciara una línea de grabadoras en VHS.  Convirtiéndose así en el sistema estándar hogareño por más de 15 años.

Detalles técnicos

Grabación de Video:

Un cassette de VHS puede tener un máximo de 430 m de cinta ofreciendo alrededor de 3 horas y media de video para el sistema NTSC y 5 horas para PAL en modo de calidad "standard" (SP).

Otras velocidades incluyen LP y EP/SLP que duplican o triplican su duración, para regiones de NTSC. Estas reproducciones lentas causan una ligera reducción en la calidad de vídeo (desde 250 líneas a 230 líneas analógicas horizontales); también, este tipo de grabaciones lentas no se pueden reproducir en reproductores VHS que no van equipados con la tecnología necesaria de velocidades de cinta. Por eso normalmente, se comercializaban vídeo reproductores sólo de modo SP.

Longitud de Cinta:

Tanto los cassettes de VHS NTSC como los de PAL/SECAM VHS son físicamente idénticos (aunque la señales de grabación en la cinta son incompatibles). Sin embargo, como la velocidad de la cinta difiere entre NTSC y PAL/SECAM, el tiempo de reproducción entre ambos sistemas es ligeramente diferente. Con el fin de evitar la confusión, los fabricantes indican el tiempo de duración en minutos.

Es perfectamente posible grabar y reproducir un casete T-XXX en un vídeo de PAL o un casete E-XXX en uno de NTSC, pero la duración puede ser distinta a la indicada. SP es el modo de reproducción estándar y LP el modo de reproducción larga.
