Just met with Governor Ducey's Executive Staff (including the AZ Chief of Staff; DeputyChief and ) encouraging them to Veto SB-1445. The meeting provided a platform to have concerns aired. And I made it perfectly clear that Governor Ducey needs to make a decision on this bill one way or the other (as opposed to sitting idle and allowing this to become law at Midnight without his intervention). So that means, "We're not in the clear just yet!!!!" PLEASE call his office and request that the Governor Veto SB-1445! Many mischaracterize our Activism STRONGLY OPPOSING SB-1445, as Anti-Police demonstrations of our voices. That's entirely wrong! We're Pro-Justice if anything! I don't wish to see any officer or his/her family threatened; assaulted; etc. though, this is the argument made by Legislators to justify the necessity of this 60 day suppression of identity Law (when an officer is involved in a use-of-force-incident or Murder of a citizen). We want Transparency, because an informed public is a rational public, and secrecy breeds distrust & screams COVER UP! In a time where officers nationwide are in the spotlight for questionable policing tactics that have led to blatant homicide of citizens (based now on video evidence in more than a few cases), though they've gone on without ANY findings of criminal wrong doing. The last thing we need is to have a veil of secrecy cast on Law Enforcement, almost as to suggest that they're under attack and need protection. It's quite the opposite in reality, and we need NOT sit by idle while Laws are passed that allow potential murderers to hide from their crimes. Especially not when they're licensed to carry weapons, discharge them and execute us on the spot! SB-1445 is a dangerous piece of legislation that if signed into Law, spells an imminent end to trust & respect for Police Officers. It's NOT the fault of Law Enforcement here, because they only enforce the laws that Legislators pass. So that begs the question, "If as a Law Maker you're intent to protect Police Officers and their families, why then are you hell bent on passing laws that threaten to tarnish their image and enrage the people?" How much sense does this really make? Call & DEMAND that Governor Doug Ducey do what's in the best interest of Law Enforcement & the People alike! To those of you who've placed calls to Governor Ducey demanding a Veto of SB-1445, keep pushing. Those calls & tweets are helping. He wouldn't put himself out there publicly if he already had his mind made up. Local Community Leadership who've spurred this movement are hopeful to sit down with @DougDucey in the coming days to share our concerns surrounding this important piece of legislation.
