when i was growing up i lived with an alcoholic parent who used to grab his keys and go drive who knows where super drunk after fights with my other parent. every time we called the rcmp (nb) and the rnc (nl) and told them he was out drunk driving and gave them the details of his truck and plates and not ONCE did they do anything about it. he could’ve killed someone, going out multiple times a week like that for years. the police don’t care about public safety.

For “The Game,” oh man, I had such a great time writing this story. @ellydash had sent me a really lovely prompt for a short fic, but I realized I wanted to tell a much longer story and decided to write it for a birthday present. 

I don’t know if this really counts as a secret--and it might be disappointing to read depending on how much fun the original idea sounds--but my original idea was to extend the game Grace and Frankie play to a much more explicitly sexual place. I was really captivated by the idea that they could basically start having sex with each other but categorize it as something else (somehow?! brains are special places?!) in order to fit it within the construct of the game. However, that quickly started to feel untrue for the characters...even before I tried writing any scenes in which the game escalates to the point that they’re truly intimate with each other. 

I decided to keep the game to kissing only and to try to make the kisses feel sexier and more intentional over time. That ended up feeling like a better challenge, actually, and it created more room for the specific character growth I wanted to map in the story. The first time they kiss on the lips it propels Grace into a memory of the roommate she kissed in college, which in turn propels her into a greater awareness of what she’s doing with Frankie, why things are different now. I didn’t want a person having those realizations to end up having yet another overtly sexual experience that gets laughed off as something experimental or just for fun, so it ended up feeling important that they consciously articulate their desire for each other first.

I saw your tags that you wanna hear RF5 theories and I don't have a theory so much as something I think would be neat? What if a RF game was set in the Sechs Empire? Like post-Ethelberd so ideally not so antagonistic and evil like but you had to unite the two kingdoms from that side of the border. I think it would be interesting 🤔 I also just want more RF, its been so looooong

Honestly, Sechs Empire location is probably on the top of my RF5 wishlist. We’ve always heard about the empire from other people but we’ve never seen what it’s actually like on the inside. I think it being set either pre or post-Ethelbread would be interesting. Maybe there could be a successor to Ethelbean that you have to work to overthrow since you’re so close to peace and nature and all that stuff.

It has been so long since RF4 released I feel you hard on that. When will Rune Factory return from the war?

Oh, I thought the same thing too! Like, he gets that look like he's trying to suss out what's really going on in their relationship dynamic, and then she gives him this info and I imagine his surprised "New Mexico?" is laced with the thought "but that's so far! What about Grace?" which she then confirms with "I've got my life here with Grace" (who she puts first before her own children.) I'm really curious what that car ride home is like for Robert and Sol. Because Grace just got done telling him how happy she was because of her life with Frankie and how she doesn't need another man in her life because she has Frankie. So if Robert presents his case for why he thinks there might be something deeper to the relationship between their ex-wives that they may not even realize, then I think Sol would provide his supporting evidence on the state of Grace's mind as it pertains to Frankie. And since I think Sol's main motivation in helping Grace with her love life is absolve his guilt about stealing her husband, and Robert's new outlook on life has him apologizing to Grace and hoping she thinks well of him when he's gone... I think they would probably want to both shield her from the pain of Frankie potentially leaving and perhaps try to get her to realize why it's so easy for her to replace the love of a man in her life with the companionship she shares with Frankie. I just see this as having had the potential for some well-intentioned meddling from the men who uprooted their lives.

Do you (or any of your followers) know of efforts in Canada similar to the memorial fundraising for George Floyd and/or the bail funding that's been circulating in the US? Like BLM related causes that I and others can give what we can to up here as well (not in lieu of, but in addition to the aforementioned ones, obviously). I have been looking rather unsuccessfully.

@chainofclovers ok so now that I have, I definitely stand by what I said, but also I feel like you captured that way we can have little moments that seem to exist in their own piece of time and space that feels so big, even if it would seem so inconsequential otherwise and I absolutely ADORE it

Thank you so much, @veroniquemagique​! That makes me super happy. There was basically no way I could put myself into a vacuum and forget about the pandemic and all the weirdness; I obviously wasn’t writing ABOUT it but I did feel like I was writing FROM it in some ways. Writing the crowded coffeeshop scene felt illicit, somehow. 😂

I’m really glad that you enjoyed reading all the little moments. I knew it would be frustrating to “listen in” on Grace and Frankie’s circular conversations, knowing they’re trying to talk about the same thing but aren’t totally succeeding, but I wanted the frustration to feel purposeful, like it was clearing away dust in time for the final chapter.
